dgewater is coming Alive ... and this place is fast becoming a locals favorite spot to dine and meet. 30th Street Eatery & Pub is the brainchild of Dennis and Debbie Dolbow. You may remember them from the Bridgeton Market and Deli in New Smyrna Beach. They closed that location to open 30th Street a year and a half ago. The restaurant’s namesake is 30th Street aka Roberts Road at the Publix Plaza in Edgewater. The Dolbows are no strangers to the restaurant business, they owned very successful restaurants in New Jersey before coming to Florida ten years ago. They have over 30 years of ownership experience in the industry. They completely remodeled the restaurant to give it a warm feel, kind of a Cheers like feel. You know, where everybody knows your name. The seating is plentiful with high tops and intimate booths. They have live music Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. The menu has a vast array of items to choose from, it is an all American family style theme. The menu changes two times a year. Dennis comprised the menu from all the popular items they have served over the 30 years that they have owned restaurants. If you have a favorite that is not on their menu, mention it to Dennis. If it becomes popular, he will add it to the menu. As we noted before, they have great steaks, chops, pasta entrees, gourmet sandwiches, salads, chicken and more, including an all you can eat soup and salad bar. Every item is prepared and plated to order. From the Black & Bleu Chicken Salad, New York Pastrami & Rye to the Chicken Marsala, each plate is made fresh when the order is placed. Just how far would you drive for a great tasting New York Strip Steak and all the fixins? All the way to 30th

hen friends get together and make a plan, sometimes amazing things happen. Such is the case with five friends that became visionaries. Theo Mundell, Sandee and Ken Ragsdale along with Bob and Marylou Colvin, all had worked together in Orlando. They realized after running into each other and socializing in New Smyrna Beach, they had all moved from the Orlando area to New Smyrna Beach. One thing led to another, and the re-kindled friendship grew. The group heard that a local bar was for sale. It needed work and some TLC. They made an offer to the owners and it was accepted. The friends had a vision, and that vision became Merk’s Bar & Grill. After months of planning and hard work, they took ownership in March 2005. Merk’s has been noted as “ The Locals Favorite” for ten years. Anyone can open a sports bar, but their vision was different. They wanted great food, a lively atmosphere, family friendly, and a full bar. A place that offered something for everyone to enjoy. The sports bar is of course the center of action. Merk’s is home to all Cleveland Browns fans and has their own room dedicated to them. They have a pool and game room, a patio deck complete with large flat screen TV’s. In fact there are tables that even have your own private TV for your viewing pleasure as well as huge flat screen TV’s placed all around the dining, game room and bar. Comfortable seating and a laid back atmosphere is the name of the game at Merk’s. You can come in withflip flops or dress shoes. Dress as casual as you wish. To have a successful business, you must have a fantastic staff. They do ! G.M. Brian Lapierre has the task of the day to day operations at Merk’s. Making sure that the ship is running smoothly and your visit is a fun and memorable experience. Brian tries to be transparent and is almost always behind the scene,

jacki savidge

This months Bartender we love is Jacki Savidge from Neptune’s Sports Pub & Grill in Daytona Beach. Originally from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Jacki has called the Daytona area home for the past 21 years. She is a self taught bartender, our favorite kind! She has learned from some of the best around. Jacki has been tending bar in the area for 8 years and at Neptune’s since they opened. With her infectious smile, she melts your heart and is always ready to make you feel welcome and at home. Having been in the area for so many years, she has developed a large following. Her favorite part of her job is like many, her interaction with people. She loves to meet people from all over the world. Away from work, she loves hanging with her family and going to the beach. One of the house favorite signature drinks she makes is “The Neptune God” Here’s how you can make one at home. Start with a 16 oz. glass filled with ice. Add 2 oz. of Spiced Rum, 2 oz. of Coconut Vodka, add a splash of Grenadine, top off with equal parts of Orange and Pineapple juice. Shake and garnish with a cherry, sit back and enjoy! Or, better yet, come down to Neptune’s and have Jacki make you one. She will also introduce you to the fantastic food available at Neptune’s. You can’t beat a great drink, fantastic wings, all served with a smile! Neptune’s Sports Pub and Grill is located at the corner of A1A and US Hwy 92 Beachside Daytona Beachside at the Daytona Inn Resort. 219 South Atlantic Ave. Call for more info at 386-256-2536.

Restaurant Rant

H

Now I understand, kitchens employ the same ells Kitchen has been great

entertainment in my book for a few years now, entertaining in that you get to watch Gordon Ramsey scream at his obviously incompetent charges, while his own restaurant empire is crumbling. True story, he would be beyond broke if it weren’t for the television dollars, but that is another story entirely.

The other great source of hilarity comes

in the form of the titles that the contestants manage to show up with. Over the years they have had an Executive Banquet Chef, as well as the Executive Chef of a children’s camp, she probably made a wicked peanut butter and jelly, but she was gone in the first round. There has been a myriad of personal chefs, scads of Sous chefs including an Executive Sous Chef (that’s a good one), and a Food Court Chef. Bourbon chicken anyone? We all want to feel important and have a nice title, but what’s the matter with cook? It is an honorable profession. Young people no longer go to a culinary institute, they go to chef school. We are beating chef to death. Go to Babble fish or your favorite English/French dictionary and look up chef, it means the boss. Sous means under. The kitchen now has a boss and an under boss.

management structure as La Cosa Nostra. I guess we should all be nicer if we have to send a dish back. The term Executive chef is purely an American creation, and I still don’t know what it’s supposed to mean. I think it got started as chains started expanding rapidly and the needed a corporate type chef in order to research and develop food which could be easily replicated so that it would be equally bad everywhere. Low and behold the Executive Chef was created, a chef that did not have to cook every night in a restaurant. This is a title implying an individual is as capable in the boardroom as the kitchen, a true renaissance man, like the guy in the Dos Equis commercial. Wait a minute; there are a ton of guys around town with Executive chef neatly embroidered on their coat who works the line every night. They have never seen a boardroom but they handle the personnel, supply, compliance and a ton of other issues that your everyday civilian executive could never handle. Ok, if it makes you and your resume feel better call yourself the Executive Chef. It really doesn’t matter what the title is, you can either cook or you can’t. At the best places, the boss can cook.

1966 State Rd 44, New Smyrna Beach 386.402.8865 Few people have a chance to live a dream, a vision or a wanting desire. Two people of different walks of life, joined in a partnership, a relationship, turned a dream to reality. Owners David Brown and Dawn Kelly teamed up to create BeachTown Grill. The dream was to have a family oriented sports grill with a little something for everyone. From sports and traditional game food, to the best of traditional favorites. Authentic Cubans, classic Rubens, traditional French inspired Monty Cristos, to healthy options that were fresh and authentic and tasted great. With the right ideas and with some excellent talent and experience, wonderful things happen. The secret is great ingredients! BeachTown’s staff comes with a multitude of talents and experience. Learning to create culinary masterpieces from around the world. The challenge to create delicious food was no challenge as Dawn had many years of experience in the food industry before becoming a school teacher. Dawn grew up just outside of New Orleans, she worked and managed restaurants from the time she was 16. She worked, cooked and learned with some of the best. David had the business experience, Dawn had the ambition to create a restaurant all would enjoy. All of the sauces, seasonings and rubs are made by the kitchen staff. The menu is very diverse, and features a new and expanded dinner menu. You can experience flavors from around the world or traditional Americana. On the menu you will find fresh salads like Asian Chicken Salad, grilled sesame ginger chicken with mandarin oranges, sliced almonds and crunchy noodles, and served over shredded cabbage with a toasted sesame ginger dressing. This is a delightful treat on a hot summer day. Love Cajun cuisine? Try their Louisiana Shrimp Po’ boy, golden fried shrimp stuffed into a French-style Po’ boy sub roll with lettuce, tomato, pickles and a spicy Creole mayonnaise. This is delicious! Another New Orleans treat is a sandwich that you won’t find in these parts of the country. Once you try it, you will be coming back for more. It is their giant New Orleans Muffuletta. This behemoth of a sandwich is piled high with tasty ham, salami, provolone cheese and topped with a traditional olive spread on top of authentic Louisiana Muffuletta bread, it’s fantastic! The bread and olive spread is shipped in overnight from a renowned New

Orleans bakery in New Orleans. Another Cajun inspired offering is their Voodoo Burger. They start with a half-pound of their Cajun seasoned lean ground sirloin blend, cook it to perfection, and top it with caramelized onions and fried jalapenos. You will want a cold drink with this one, but man is it full of flavor! Other new items include soups like Crawfish Bisque and Conch Chowder. New Entrees include Crawfish Cakes in a sandwich or by themselves, Shrimp and Crawfish Etouffee and more. In the mood for something tropical? Try their fantastic Mahi Fish Tacos with homemade mango salsa, featuring six ounces of wild caught Mahi seared and seasoned to your preference, served on two warm flour tortillas with Cheddar Jack cheese, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce and topped with their signature homemade aioli, served with fresh tortilla chips and salsa. Looking for something both healthy and decadent? Try the Chicken Monterrey with juicy grilled chicken breast prepared in a lemon butter sauce, with artichokes and capers served over aromatic jasmine rice and a blend of fresh steamed veggies or your choice of side. This is one dish you have to try! Dawn, being a school teacher, makes sure the kids get special attention too. They have their very own menu to choose from, and kids eat free every Wednesday. These are just a few of the wonderful offerings at BeachTown Grill. You just have to come in and experience this delicious food yourself. They serve beer and wine, as well as fresh brewed iced tea, locally roasted blend of premium coffee, and sodas. BeachTown Grill is always family friendly, so come on over and bring the kids, you’ll be glad you did. A combination of an ardent, capable kitchen staff and a friendly, accommodating wait staff are always ready to greet with a smile and go the extra mile to make your dining experience as enjoyable as possible has created a cult following among locals and a lasting impression upon those just passing through. They are located Mainland at the Publix Plaza, 1966 State Road 44 New Smyrna Beach, Florida 32169. Call for soups and interesting off menu daily specials at 386-402-8865. Hours of operation are 11am to 10pm Monday through Saturday, 11am-9pm on Sunday. Happy Hour is from 4-7pm offering half price drafts every weekday.
