Golden Oldies Ambassadors Great Names, Great Men Golden Oldies Cricket Festivals have been fortunate to have wonderful support from notable cricket personalities who take on the role of ambassadors for Festivals and the Golden Oldies Cricket Festival in Christchurch is no exception. Our respected and welcome Cricket Ambassadors are local cricket personality and ex-Black Cap, Rod Latham who is joined by two of the greatest cricketers to have played the game. South Africans, Mike Procter and Barry Richards have both been involved with Golden Oldies previously and have enjoyed their involvement with Golden Oldies cricketers from various parts of the world. Rod Latham represented New Zealand between 1990 and 1994 playing 4 Tests and 33 One Day Internationals. An aggressive hard-hitting batsman and a steady medium pace bowler, Rod was an integral part of the quality New Zealand World Cup team in 1992. In Tests, Rod scored over 250 runs including a highest score of 119 v Zimbabwe in Bulawayo

and took 6 wickets. In One Day Internationals, he scored just on 600 runs and took 11 wickets. In a 1st class career of 108 matches, Rod scored 6,300 including a highest of 237 not out amongst his 9 centuries. He took 35 wickets with a best return of 3 for 20. In One Day Cricket for Canterbury, Rod played 126 matches and scored over 3,000 runs and took 47 wickets. Rod, a true all-rounder, was a very good rugby player who played 41 games for the iconic Canterbury Rugby team between 1980 /85, New Zealand Juniors in 1980 and New Zealand Colts in 1981. The Latham name is still prominent in world Cricket. Rod’s son Tom is a regular New Zealand representative in all forms of the game as an opening batsman and occasional wicket-keeper and recently captained New Zealand in a limited overs series in Ireland. An outstanding young player with over 2,200 test runs including 6 centuries and 1,600 ODI runs with 3 centuries, Tom who is still

only 25 appears to be destined to represent and lead New Zealand Cricket well into the future. MIKE PROCTER, who has been Ambassador for Golden Oldies Cricket Festivals in Cape Town and Barbados has agreed to be a permanent representative of the Golden Oldies Cricket Movement. Popular and affable he has enjoyed his time with Golden Oldies Cricketers. “It’s great to meet cricketers who still play with enthusiasm and obviously really love their opprotunity to continue to play in attractive international destinations,” said Mike after the Barbados experience. Mike was one of the worlds unlucky players who because of the apartheid regime in South Africa was only able to play 7 Tests. Showing what could have been, he managed 41 wickets at 15.02 with best bowling 6 for 73 and scored over 220 runs at an average of 25. What his statistics could have been! In 1st Class Cricket (401 matches) he scored just under 22,000 runs with 48 centuries including a highest score of 254 including 6 consecutive centuries in 1970. 1,417 wickets with a best of 9 for 71 and 5 wickets in an innings 70 times. And just to top it off he played 271 limited Over matches for 6,624 runs (highest score 154 not out and 5 centuries) and took 344 wickets (best 6 for 13 and 5 wickets or more 7 times). Check out this incredible spell of bowling while
playing for Gloucestershire In an era of outstanding all-rounders, he was one of the absolute greats. And he is an all-round nice guy who since retiring from playing has served as a South African team manager, as South African selector, as International Match Referee and as Golden Oldies Cricket Ambassador. Not only is Mike coming to be one of our Cricket Ambassadors but he is intending to stay on and
play in the Golden Oldies Golf Festival (the Four Course Challenge) that follows the Cricket Festival Week. BARRY RICHARDS, has been involved with VSL, the managers of the Golden Oldies Cricket Festival, since 2004 when he was Ambassador for a Vintage Cricket Carnival. Barry has continued his connection and is a welcome Ambassador for the Golden Oldies Cricket Festival. Like his old friend and team mateMike, Barry was unable to play Test Cricket for any length of time. Barry played only 4 Tests and scored over 500 runs at an average of more than 70 with a top score of 140 (one of 2 centuries).
Have a look at his beautiful strokemaking in this innings for Hampshire. In 1st Class Cricket (339 games) in Australia, South Africa and England, Barry scored over 28,000 runs at an average of 54. He scored 80 centuries with a highest score of 356 (and 9 hundreds before lunch on the 1st day). He also took 77 1st class wickets! In Limited Over Cricket Barry scored 8,500 runs (highest score 155 not out). With his 16 centuries in Limited Overs Cricket he scored 98 centuries over the three forms of the game. Following his amazing career Barry became a popular and successful administrator and regular commentator. Barry was rated one of the world’s best ever batsman and ranked alongside Sir Donald Bradman accordingly. There are many stories of Barry’s exceptional talent-none more remarkable than his playing a successful innings in club cricket in Durban using only the leading edge of the bat. A capable golfer, Barry intends to stay on and take part in the Golden Oldies Golf Festival in the week following the Cricket Festival. South Africa v New Zealand Willows v Willows This fixture could create a bit interest we believe Willows v The Willows A feature of the Festival will be the likely matching of Willows Cricket Club of Natal, South Africa, against The Willows Cricket Club, Lowburn, North Canterbury. A team from Willows Cricket Club under the management of experienced cricket administrator, Robin Breeds are making the long trek to New Zealand to be the sole (so far) South African team taking part in the Festival. Prior to the Cape Town Cricket Festival Robin identified that the team were looking forward to “A time of fellowship with like-minded sports people, forming life-long friendships and playing social but competitive cricket.” As they proved in Cape Town they are perfect for Golden Oldies Cricket. Also recently entered is a team from The Willows Cricket Club situated north of Christchurch at an outstanding facility. Formed by local cricketing enthusiasts (including Barry Hadlee, Mike Dormer and Cran Bull) in the early 90s, the Club Objectives are; • To encourage players in secondary school first elevens to play with and against experienced players, many of whom are present or past first-class cricketers. • To offer quality cricket to cricket lovers in a country atmosphere, where families may come to watch and picnic. The team from The Willows Cricket Club will be led by Andrew Nuttall, a past Canterbury representative who was at the Barbados Festival with the I Zingari XI. The return to his home city sees him take his place in The Willows. It’s very likely we will have a fixture between Willows and The Willows-bound to be a feature fixture.
