Let the festival begin!
Welcome to Wales to you all - Croeso i Gymru i chi gyd
Golden Oldies Rugby is delighted to welcome all teams (local and visiting), players, supporters and referees to Cardiff for the 21st Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival.
On behalf of Cardiff & District Rugby Union I’d like to extend a very warm Welsh welcome to everyone from across the world who has travelled here to participate in the 21st Golden Oldies Rugby Festival; we’re certainly very proud of the fact that Cardiff has been chosen as the venue for the first occasion that this prestigious event has been held in Wales. I sincerely hope that you all enjoy your time with us here in the Welsh capital and trust that your experience of Cardiff and indeed Wales in general will be everything that you hoped for.
Teams and individual rugby players from Australia, Argentina, Bahamas, Canada, England, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Scotland, Wales and USA will gather in the true spirit of Fun, Friendship and Fraternity to celebrate the game of rugby and enjoy the great venue, hospitality and facilities on offer in Cardiff. The Festival is about the friends and acquaintances you have made and will make, playing Golden Oldies rugby for the sheer fun of the game and the social events that accompany them. I am sure there will be some great rugby played this week and many stories exchanged! The rugby grounds are ready for kick off, the parade is organised and the social functions are all set to entertain - all you need to do now is enjoy the rugby and the special camaraderie that only Golden Oldies sports can provide.

“The Golden Oldies spirit is the heart of rugby for me. As Jean-Pierre Rives said: ‘Rugby is the history of a ball with friends around. When the ball is gone, the friends stay’. That is Golden Oldies for me,”
www.govsl.com/goldenoldies/rugby
As you’re probably aware, Cardiff is used to staging big sporting occasions - especially rugby both at club and international level and with the numerous attractions in the city including Cardiff Castle, the National Museum of Wales and Cardiff Bay to name but a few I’m sure that you will find a variety of things to see and do during your stay here. Cardiff & District Rugby Union has been an affiliated member of the WRU since it was first formed at a meeting held on the14th November 1892 at the Market Hotel (now the Old Market Tavern) in Trinity Street, Cardiff (next to Cardiff Central Market) with a remit to organise competitions for local sides who were not already WRU members. We currently have almost forty member clubs and next year (2017) sees the 125th anniversary of the union, which is proud to be able to say that it organises two of the oldest rugby union cup competitions in world rugby that are still being played for, as well as also providing league competitions for the clubs. Our premier cup competition - the Mallett Cup - was first played for in 1894 whilst the Ninian Stuart Cup was first contested in 1910, although when taken in conjunction with it’s predecessor tournament the Union Shield, this secondary competition has been played for since 1895. The finals of both competitions are held at the Arms Park, a tradition that has been upheld since their inception all those years ago. One point of interest, the Ninian Stuart Cup was donated to our union by the son of the then 4th Marquess of Bute – Lord Ninian Crichton Stuart – who was tragically killed in 1916 at the Battle of Loos in Belgium; his statue still stands to this day in the Gorsedd Gardens in front of the National Museum of Wales in Cathays Park. Finally, may I wish you all the very best of luck in your endeavours and hope that everyone has a magnificent rugby experience over the duration of the tournament.
CROESO i GYMRU! WELCOME to WALES! May I extend to all Golden Oldies a very warm welcome to Wales on behalf of Wooden Spoon, the Children’s Charity of Rugby. It is an honour & a privilege for us to be involved with the 21st Golden Oldies Festival & we are very grateful to VSL for nominating us as their charity for the week. Wooden Spoon was established in 1983, when a group of English rugby supporters travelled to Dublin to watch England lose their 4th & final game to Ireland in the then 5 Nations. In true rugby spirit they turned a ‘wooden spoon’ defeat into a positive by raising money for a mini bus for a local special needs school. From those humble beginnings we now have 34 volunteer regions throughout the UK & Ireland & since 1983, have committed in excess of £24 million to 650 projects, currently about 70 projects each year. Our mission is to positively transform the lives of disadvantaged and disabled children and young people across the UK and Ireland through the power of rugby.Typically, we fund sensory rooms, sensory gardens, outdoor play areas, outdoor classrooms & MUGAs (multi use games areas & arenas) for the most worthy causes. Our USP is ‘every penny raised in the region is spent locally’, with no admin costs, so you may be assured any donations received this week will be spent wisely on local projects. As a charity, we are inspired by our rugby roots. Passion, Integrity, Teamwork and Fun drive everything we do, qualities which I know are shared by the Golden Oldies. Wooden Spoon is an events based charity & for the next 7 days we look forward with great anticipation to a wonderfully unique event, full of sporting friendship & FUN. We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible on the rugby fields & in the ‘clubhouses’ afterwards. We sincerely hope you thoroughly enjoy your time here in Cardiff & you sample the full variety of sights & hospitality that the city has to offer.
Diolch yn fawr a phob lwc i bawb.Thank you & good luck to you all!

Welcome from Cabinet Secretary for the Economy and Infrastructure, Ken Skates “I’m delighted that Wales is hosting this fantastic celebration of Rugby and the time has now come for us to extend a warm Welsh welcome to all countries taking part over the week. We’re looking forward to welcoming the 2000 international visitors who have travelled to Wales for this event and I hope everyone gets to see the world class facilities, attractions and accommodation we have to offer in Wales while enjoying our famous Welsh welcome and hospitality as well as our legendary sporting culture. Croeso i Gymru/ Welcome to Wales”
The Golden Oldies Rugby Ethos Shwmae! I am a very lucky man. I get to welcome you to the 21st Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival as part of the VSL team and as a very proud Welshman. We are all here because of our passion for and love of the great game. Wales is a nation with a passion and love for the game that may be matched but never beaten. As such, there is no better place in the world to celebrate the 21st anniversary of Rugby, Fun, Friendship and Fraternity than the heart of world rugby, Cardiff. Rugby is and has always been the lifeblood of Welsh culture. We have certainly had our ups-and-downs over the years and nowadays coaching our national team is probably the most scrutinised role in sport; there are three million of us who are never short of sharing an opinion or two. Regardless of the results our support never waivers, nor does our obsession with discussing the performances. We have produced many brilliant players and I hope you will get the chance to meet some of them during the week. They will enjoy talking about rugby and reminiscing as much as you will. This is a special opportunity for you to get a feel for just how much the game means here. I know you will receive an extremely warm welcome wherever you venture during your stay. Welsh hospitality is like no other and Cardiff’s attractions, facilities, restaurants, and most importantly, bars are primed and ready to make your stay a memorable one. I am extremely grateful for the support and enthusiasm of the Local Organising Committee, the team at Cardiff Council, the Welsh Government and our host clubs. You will meet many volunteers during the week who are giving their time and are determined to make your stay easy and enjoyable. It would be a nice touch if you could thank them as much as I will. I know they will be very pleased should you do so. Aside from the rugby, there are two things I would ask you to do. Please make yourself available to break the Guinness World Record for the largest ever rugby scrum; and support the Charity fundraising activities throughout the Festival for Wooden Spoon. We will leave Wales with a legacy from Golden Oldies Rugby that will mean very much.
So have fun, don’t hesitate to ask me anything and feel free to buy me a beer!
The Golden Oldies Experience begins when you accept that you’re at far greater risk from what you may do to yourself and have done to you socially than anything which may happen to you on the field. Golden Oldies Rugby Festivals, owned and managed by Vintage Sport and Leisure Ltd (VSL), are primarily the means of bringing together rugby enthusiasts, 35 years of age and over to share their common interest in rugby and have a great time. There are three main principles on which every Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival is built on: 1. To provide players from any country an environment in which sportsmanship and camaraderie thrive. The Festivals are founded on Fun, Friendship and Fraternity for those who have retired from serious competitive play, but wish to continue participating in their favourite sport for sheer enjoyment. 2. To provide an environment for participants to play against others who still prefer to play games more competitively, the opportunity to do so against like-minded teams, but still remaining dedicated to playing in a spirit of goodwill. 3. To provide opportunities for team members and their spouses or partners to travel, create new friendships and renew old acquaintances. Together, these provide opportunities to highlight and promote rugby throughout the world, and to create positive reasons for enthusiasts to retain an active interest in rugby. VSL works with and is sanctioned by the governing bodies of each country a World Festival is held, whilst ensuring strong involvement with clubs, rugby development and charities in the host area.
Supporting Team Managers Golden Oldies is built as much on the dedication of the team managers as any other aspect of the movement. VSL supports team managers with everything from mailing list templates and promotional material to fundraising ideas and team kit supply. So if the thought of organising your team seems daunting, don’t worry, VSL will be with you every step of the way.
For Anyone Over 35 Golden Oldies Festivals are open to men and women over 35 years of age from any part of the world. Whether you are part of an established team or you are an individual or group of mates looking to join a Festival - you are all welcome. 2016 sees the introduction of the Premier Grades, which adhere to the full World Rugby Laws and have no Golden Oldies Variations.
Paul Guest 2016 Festival Director
www.govsl.com/goldenoldies/rugby
The Golden Oldies Rugby Ethos Following discussion with many Golden Oldies teams and loyal supporters, VSL is delighted to introduce new Golden Oldies playing grades, which will first be played here at the 2016 Festival. The new team gradings recognise the ability, age, agility and experience of teams and players.
Men’s Grades 1) Premier (full World Rugby Laws, no Red or Gold Shorts) 2) Semi-Competitive (Golden Oldies Laws, no Red or Gold Shorts) 3) Social A (Golden Oldies Laws) 4) Social B (Golden Oldies Laws) 5) Social C (Golden Oldies Laws, average age over 60)
Women’s Grades 1) Premier (full World Rugby Laws, no Red or Gold Shorts) 2) Semi-Competitive (Golden Oldies Laws, no Red or Gold Shorts) 3) Social A (Golden Oldies Laws) 4) Social B (Golden Oldies Laws) In addition to choosing a grade, teams will be requested to provide information on their playing standard, experience, playing ethos, spread of the ages within their team and an estimate of the average age of players. This will influence the fixtures a team plays within their grade.
Premier Grades match length - Two 30 minute halves Non-Premier Grades match length - Three 20 minute periods
“At a time when sport is taking off in unprecedented ways at the top commercial levels, your presence here will remind us that the soul of sport still resides in the hundreds of thousands of players from many different backgrounds in many different places who play games socially for the love of it promoting respect and understanding amongst people in the process.”

“I enjoyed myself immensely. I have never been associated with such a well-organised and smooth-running rugby event and I congratulate the organising committee.”

Playing Laws The World Rugby Laws of rugby apply to Golden Oldies, but are modified within each grade with the exception of the Premier Grade. The Golden Oldies Laws embody and reflect the spirit of Golden Oldies Rugby. The aim of the laws and the variations is to provide the best environment in which player enjoyment is maximised and the possibility of injury is minimised. Prior to a match the team captains and the referee will remind all players of the manner in which the game is to be played and the nature of the laws to be applied. Sportsmanship and camaraderie are imperative in all Golden Oldies matches.

Harlequins Cardiff Harlequins started life as Cardiff High School Old Boys in 1922. In the 90 plus years since then the Quins have established a reputation for playing rugby with a smile. This ethos fits so well with that of the Golden Oldies that we feel it’s what we have all been waiting for!
Rumney RFC is a club steeped in history, with some great players coming through its ranks, Jamie Roberts (Harlequins/Wales/British Lion), Steve Ford (Cardiff/Wales), Phil Ford (Widnes and GB Rugby League, to name but a few. “Golden Oldies Rugby is your opportunity to show all those skills you acquired in your younger days while still enjoying your favourite sport. This is not uncompromising competition but rather the means of cementing friendships and enjoying the company of some of life’s most unforgettable characters on and off the field” An anonymous publican in London was heard lamenting about when that year’s tournament would be over. “It’s not just the money it’s brought in. That’s the least of it. They’ve brought back in here the sort of atmosphere, I, as a host, would always like to have in my pub. “No problems, but DRINK, my God those boys could move it. But they were entertainment in themselves.

We will be serving an exclusive Golden Oldies Beer throughout the Festival week supplied by the award winning Felinfoel Brewery The closest pub to the Principality Stadium - only thirty yards from gate 3 – this is the number one venue in the capital on match days! Known as the ‘Legends Haunt’, with former Welsh Internationals calling in daily to drink in one of the last few real pubs left in the town centre – it is the only pub with 3 pool tables, a jukebox, Live Sport and dartboards. With a newly refurbished interior, sumptuous sofas with a spacious dining area and unbeaten value for money food and proper drinks.
We are delighted to be part of the Golden Oldies Pub Passport and look forward to sharing our fusion of authentic Portuguese fare and classic Italian cuisine with the Golden Oldies Fraternity! 02920 227 147 | info@portodue.co.uk | www.portodue.co.uk

Location
Merchandise
All the Festival matches will be held at the University Fields (Llanrumney) and Rumney Rugby Club, which is immediately next to the University Fields.
Golden Oldies Rugby merchandise will be on sale all week at the Festival Hub during Match Days and in the stadium at the Opening Ceremony.
The ‘Festival Hub’ will include live music and authentic Welsh food and drink vendors and more.
Festival Newspaper
Games Draw and Times
A full colour complimentary copy of the Festival Newspaper will be available at all hotels on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with photographic coverage and stories of the Festival highlights.
The games draw will be available to Team Managers at the Team Managers Meeting on Sunday 21st August. Copies will also be on display at the grounds. There will be a longer lunch break on Wednesday 24th August to allow for all participants to take part in the Guinness World Record Scrum Attempt, be attempted at the University Fields (Llanrumney).
Team Awards
Shower/Changing Rooms Showers and changing rooms will be open from 9am till 6pm each match day in the University Clubhouse (Llanrumney) and the Rumney RFC clubhouse next to the Romney ground.
Injuries will be reported to Event Medics who will be on duty during games. This will be supported by St. Johns Ambulance and volunteer medical runners (from some local junior rugby clubs). There will also be a chiropractor tent who will be able to provide strapping and treatment for injuries not requiring the emergency treatment of St. Johns.
Food and drink at the grounds is being supplied by SFP, who have worked with local suppliers throughout Wales to bring you authentic Welsh cuisine as well as a few exotic offerings.
Fundraising through Eco Cup and the Golden Oldies Beer
Three “Team Personality” medallions will be given to each team (included in the Team Manager’s Kit). One player per playing day to be awarded Personality of the Match which is to be chosen by the team manager or opposing team members. The reasons for a team member to be selected the “team personality” are up to the Teams and usually have particularly colourful logic!
Medical
Food and Beverage at the Grounds
We are delighted to tell you that there will be a special Golden Oldies beer available at the grounds! 10p of every pint of this will go towards our £50,000 fundraising target for Wooden Spoon Wales. We will also be using ‘Ecocup’ - simply pay a deposit for your Golden Oldies cup and then pay for your drink. You can use your cup throughout the day to reduce the waste of multiple disposable cups, then simply return your cup at the end of the day and get your deposit back. If you want to keep your limited edition cup, then your deposit will be donated to the Wooden Spoon Wales fundraising pot.
Insurance Team managers should be aware that player insurance is the responsibility of the teams and individuals, and not of the Festival Operations Office.
Festival Office The Festival office will be located in the upstairs of the University Sports Clubhouse at the grounds. For rugby related queries, please see the rugby tent in the Festival Hub.
