Festival Overview Founded by Former All Black Tom Johnson, the First Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival was held in Auckland in 1979. Since then, they have been held every two years in rugby destinations around the world. This year the World Festival is coming to Wales for the first time as hosts for the 21st Celebration. The Celebration is being held between 21st - 28th August. The Festival will see over 120 teams and 2000 international participants from 25 countries join thousands of local participants & supporters in Cardiff for this unique celebration of rugby, Wales and camaraderie.
The players range from competitive over-35s teams right through to an over-70s grade. The eldest registered player for the 2016 Festival is 84 years old.
2016 Charitable Partner Every world festival is built on the foundation of Fun, Friendship & Fraternity with Golden Oldies nominating a charitable partner that is specific to the host destination. We are delighted to partner with the children’s charity of Rugby, Wooden Spoon Wales, for the 2016 World Festival. Wooden Spoon Wales have a target of £50,000 for 2016 and we want to achieve their entire fundraising target through the 2016 Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival.

Key Feature - Closing Ceremony SATURDAY 27TH AUGUST PRINCIPALITY STADIUM 1500 Golden Oldies will attend the closing ceremony, Finale Dinner and Awards Ceremony in the Stadium Bowl. This will be one of the largest sit-down dinners ever to be held in Wales, if not the largest. The main feature of the finale inner is the ‘Finale Film’ - filmed throughout the week, this will showcase interviews, rugby highlights and more from the Festival, shown on the stadium screens. One of the features of the Dinner will be the Wooden Spoon Wales Charity Auction- the headline item is a ‘Legends of all time’ signed Welsh Rugby Shirt. We believe this to be a unique item as no shirt has ever had welsh rugby legends and personalities from all eras sign the same item. The signatures obtained include Nigel Owens, Gareth Edwards, Ryan Jones, Shane Williams, JPR Williams, Bob Norster and more. This will likely be a significant contribution to the £50,000 fundraising target we have set for the Festival to go to Wooden Spoon Wales. 6.30pm - 6.40pm | Principality Stadium Attendees arrive in Stadium Bowl to ‘Rock Choir’ 6.40pm | Principality Stadium Phil Steel with a short welcome 6.40pm - 7.30pm | Principality Stadium Dinner served 7.30pm | Principality Stadium 2016 Festival Film to be played on stadium screens 7.45pm | Principality Stadium PHOTO OP Guest Speaker, Clive Rowlands, Christchurch 2018 Festival speaker and launch video 7.55pm | Principality Stadium PHOTO OP Headline auction, including ‘Legends of all time’ signed shirt Silent auction results also to be distributed at conclusion of headline auction by volunteers 8.10pm | Principality Stadium PHOTO OP Thank you from the head of Golden Oldies (Peter McDermott) and 2016 Festival Director (Paul Guest) 8.15pm | Principality Stadium Phil Steele wrap-up 8.20pm | Principality Stadium Local bands to perform (provided by Brewhouse) 11pm | Principality Stadium to Brewhouse Ceremony finishes, After Party till late in Brewhouse (Brewery Quarter)
