HENRI Poincaré. Henri Poincaré, French mathematician and philosopher of science of the past century, but also passionate defender of the principle of ‘Academic Freedom’. This principle that sets out that thinking should be solely based on facts is embedded in the charter of our university.

VUB explicitly considers free research as the foundation of education and research.

ag ik even uw aandacht voor de hoogste berg van de wereld.

En voor de vlag van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel die op de top van die hoogste berg zal wapperen, op het dak van de wereld, de Mount Everest met zijn 8.848 meter.

Een megalomane en misplaatste stunt?

Ik denk het niet. Het is een symbolische geste waar ik als rector graag mee mijn schouders onder zet.

Ik trek zelf mee tot het basiskamp op ongeveer 6.000 meter hoogte. Tijdens die lange bergtocht zal ik terugblikken op mijn twee termijnen als VUB-rector.

De voorbije acht jaar hebben we vele bergen beklommen, of beter: bergen verzet. We hebben dat samen gedaan.

Met collega’s uit alle geledingen, studenten en alumni, vrienden en sympathisanten van de VUB. Een stevige sportieve slotklim lijkt me wel passen bij een rector die uit de faculteit Lichamelijke Opvoeding en Kinesitherapie komt. Ik ben dan ook blij dat ik me heb kunnen aansluiten bij een expeditie van VOKA. Nu mijn tweede termijn als rector er bijna op zit, kan ik er in de lentevakantie ook echt tijd voor uittrekken. De campagne voor de rectorverkiezing draait dan op volle toeren en dan wil ik me graag even op

de achtergrond houden om mijn kandidaat-opvolgers hun ding te laten doen.

Maar weet u waarom ik deze expeditie per se wil ondernemen? Wel, ik heb een collega-rector die graag beweert dat er in Vlaanderen maar twee topuniversiteiten zijn, waarmee hij eigenlijk wil zeggen dat er maar één topuniversiteit is, namelijk de zijne. Onzin natuurlijk, want maar weinig sectoren

worden zo gecontroleerd op kwaliteit als de universitaire sector. En wat blijkt dan uit die rapporten? Dat de VUB hoegenaamd niet moet onderdoen voor de twee grote universiteiten.

Integendeel, op heel wat vlakken scoren we beter.

Om die realiteit weer te geven, wil ik onze vlag zien wapperen op de hoogste top die er bestaat. ― H

28.01.2016 17:59 EN TOEN WAS HET STIL. Het is een van die momenten, waarop de campus er verlaten bij ligt, je even snel door het restaurant kunt flitsen zonder ellenlange wachtrijen en de studieruimtes bomvol zitten.

Het is examentijd.

Momenten van stilte, veroorzaakt door leegte of concentratie.

En terwijl studenten zich vroeger terugtrokken en in hun eentje studeerden, is massablokken de huidige manier van leren. In tijden van virtuele vriendschappen zoeken de studenten elkaar op, fysiek.

Elkaar zien – niet kennen – en weten: ha, jij ook. Ja, wij allemaal.

En wat onze studenten intuïtief aanvoelen bevestigt een recente VUB-studie: je presteert beter, wanneer de persoon naast jou heel hard zijn best doet. Goed uitkijken naast wie je gaat zitten is dus de boodschap.

Maar hoe rijm je dat met alle nieuwsberichten?

En met het vrijzinnige bastion dat de VUB is?

en gebedsruimte in het UZ, een ultrakatholieke privéschool in Overijse, discussies over een stille ruimte aan de VUB en weekendkranten die hun best doen om lezers een inkijk te geven in de islam.

We hebben op z’n minst het gevoel dat religie aan een revival bezig is. “Maar dat is een lokaal gegeven”, zegt religiewetenschapper professor Werner de Saeger. “Globaal en geopolitiek is het religieuze fenomeen altijd op de voorgrond gebleven.

De secularisering en verdwijning sinds de jaren ’60 waren typisch westers. En nu zien we hier de instroom van een zeer viriele religie en cultuur die wel weer de plaats op het publieke forum innemen.

Dat kennen wij niet meer.”

De VUB weet dat. Ondervindt dat dagelijks, geruggensteund door enerzijds studentes in hijab en aan de andere kant geruchten over Syriëstrijders in de bibliotheek. En daarmee gooien we ineens alles op één hoopje. Islam met een terroristische beweging als IS. Het anonieme verhaal over de bibliotheek is overigens nooit bevestigd. Maar die constante aanwezigheid van religie is wel iets waar vrijzinnigen mee worstelen. Dat ziet ook professor Gily Coene die eind 2015 het boek “Vrij(heid) van Religie” uitbracht, een bundeling teksten die de breuklijn onder vrijzinnige denkers aanhaalt.

“Vrijzinnigheid is bij ons ontstaan als tegenbeweging tegen het dominante katholicisme. Dat had een antiklerikale houding tot gevolg, en ook een kritische houding tegenover starre geloofsregels en geloofsaanspraken. Maar vandaag zitten we in een andere context en gaat het voornamelijk over de islam en hoe die een plaats krijgt in onze samenleving. Je ziet dan bijvoorbeeld conflicten ontstaan over de hoofddoek in openbare scholen of diensten.

In feite is vrijzinnigheid een erg breed begrip. Zo heb je de strikte neutralisten die enkel bouwen op wetenschap en bijvoorbeeld vinden dat er in overheidsinstellingen geen religieuze symbolen mogen zijn. Anderen kiezen een pluralistisch uitgangspunt en willen dat de verschillende levenshoudingen op een gelijkwaardige manier beleefd kunnen worden.”

Keuzevakken, opleidingen, studiekringen Dat zijn twee duidelijke strekkingen die ook aan de VUB leven. “Al leeft hier toch vooral een traditie van vakken en onderzoek, zoals vroeger aan het Centrum voor de Studie van de Verlichting, waarbij religie wordt bekeken als een menselijke zingevingsactiviteit. Dus geen godsdienst meer in

de echte zin van het woord waarbij je je onderwerpt aan een god. In die zin is religie niet per definitie contradictorisch aan vrijzinnigheid of humanisme”, vindt professor Coene. Zo gaf Mohammed Ben Siamar tussen 2007 en 2014 aan de VUB vrijwillig het keuzevak islam aan studenten wijsbegeerte en moraalwetenschappen: “Ik liet studenten het verschil zien tussen een humanistische islam en kaliefen die een politiek van geslotenheid voeren en voerden. Op zijn hoogtepunt was de islam een bloeiende beschaving die openstond voor andere culturen.” En nogal wat studenten herinneren zich de lessen Kritiek van de Religie bij filosofe Tinneke Beeckman. “Als je tegenover jihadisme het cosmetisme zet, waarbij alles leuk en licht verteerbaar moet zijn, dan geef je ook geen antwoord op vragen waar die mensen mee zitten. Het Westen draagt zelf ook verantwoordelijkheid als het gaat over pistes die moeten leiden naar een meer verdraagzame en democratische houding.”

De Studiekring Vrij Onderzoek (VO) nodigt Ludovic Mohammed Sahed uit, de eerste getrouwde homoseksuele imam.

“Hoe moeilijk is dat als godsdienst in de weg zit om je menselijke waarde te kunnen uiten?”, vraagt VO-voorzitter Julie Umbrain zich af. En Werner de Saeger lanceert deze lente Alviella, een volledig academisch instituut dat onder de vleugels van de VUB focust op levensbeschouwing en de kritische studie ervan. Er beweegt wat.

Het gaat ook verder dan de publieke aanwezigheid van de islam. “Statistische informatie heb ik niet, maar er is wel vraag naar een invulling van de betekenis van het leven die losstaat van consumeren.

Een samenleving waarin je heel erg verondersteld wordt zelf ideeën te hebben, is niet voor iedereen even gemakkelijk”, ziet filosofe Tinneke Beeckman.

“Dat betekent wel dat religie en de beleving ervan veranderd zijn. Het komt vanuit een individuele behoefte. Je bent niet langer gelovig omdat je, zoals honderd jaar geleden, in een land leeft met een sterke katholieke structuur. Omdat je ouders het waren, je grootouders… Vroeger maakte je deel uit van die traditie en je werd er ook door bepaald.

Je kon jezelf niet maken. Dat is vandaag anders.”

De rol van het individu veranderde, de wereld werd bereikbaarder en mensen selecteren, dat ziet ook Tinneke Beeckman. “Godsdienst maakt deel uit van een soort levenskwaliteit. Je hebt een context, een ritueel, een verband met anderen en dat helpt om bepaalde dingen beter te begrijpen. Net zoals ideeën uit de filosofie, maar ook uit de psychologie, uit film, literatuur… interessant kunnen zijn voor levensvragen. Ik denk dus dat er een meer algemene zoektocht is naar antwoorden en dat spiritualiteit, of levensbeschouwing, daar deel van uitmaakt.”

Vrijheid voor spiritualiteit Het is een beweging die het tij van de afgelopen halve eeuw keert. We zullen dan toch niet allemaal atheïsten worden. “Het ging die kant uit zolang mensen zich ergens tegen afzetten. Tegen de scholen bijvoorbeeld of tegen ervaringen uit hun jeugd. Soms lees ik dat burgers in het Midden-Oosten en de Arabische wereld vandaag op een gelijkaardige

manier reageren: ze willen weg van dogma en geweld, weg van religie. En er zou daarom ook een soort repressie van machthebbers zijn om juist striktere religieuze regels op te leggen. Bij ons is die negatievere context stilaan verdwenen en krijgen mensen juist meer vrijheid om spiritualiteit op een andere manier in te vullen. Het hoort bij hun zoektocht naar een levensstijl”, stelt Tinneke Beeckman.

Identiteitscrisis Daarnaast is er die andere, minder positieve beweging waar we moeilijk omheen kunnen. Die van het radicalisme. Van het moslimextremisme.

Mohammed Ben Siamar kent die beweging: “Er zitten inderdaad jonge mensen in een identiteitscrisis. Vaak kinderen van minder religieuze ouders die de godsdienst pas na hun zestiende ontdekken.

Via het internet. Onderschat daarbij Saoedi-Arabië niet, het verwende adoptiekind van Amerika. In dat land heb je het wahabisme, een tak van de islam die een zeer strenge koers vaart. Zij hebben geld en wie geld heeft, heeft macht. Hun invloed is voelbaar tot in Brussel.”

Slavernij Tinneke Beeckman weet niet of het over kinderen van minder religieuze ouders gaat, maar ze gelooft wel dat het om jongeren gaat die zich verloren voelen: “Zij willen niet meer worden zoals hun vader of moeder. Ik denk dat het radicalisme hen uitzicht geeft op een soort heldhaftigheid.

Ze kunnen iemand worden die invloed heeft, die bewonderd wordt. En daar geven ze zelfs hun leven voor.

Dat lijkt vreemd en zoals Spinoza ook zei over fanatisme: zolang mensen vrij willen zijn, kunnen wij hun gedrag begrijpen en is er een soort hoop over de samenleving. Maar dan komt dat vreemde fenomeen waarbij mensen hun leven geven voor wat anderen alleen als een vorm van slavernij kunnen zien.

Denk maar aan Mohammed Merah die in 2012 joodse kinderen neerschoot en een van de voorbeelden schijnt te zijn voor de jihadisten die de aanslag op Charlie Hebdo pleegden.

Hij zei: ik hou van de dood zoals jullie van het leven houden. Dat is voor ons totaal onbegrijpelijk.

Wij doen zoveel om niet dood te gaan.”

De grenzen Het gaat over vrijheid van meningsuiting.

Over grenzen. Over mensenrechten. “Ik ben voor een zo groot mogelijke vrijheid, maar in de architectuur van een samenleving moet je lijnen trekken. Waar dan? Dat is moeilijk”, geeft Werner de Saeger aan. “Stel dat je als islamiet ontevreden bent met ons democratisch model en je wilt met de zwarte vlag over straat. Je wil het parlement omverwerpen, de koning weg uit het paleis en een islamitische raad installeren. Is dat oproepen tot geweld of niet? Ik denk het wel. Maar waar stopt juist de vrijheid van meningsuiting? En mag je een onderscheid maken tussen religies?”

Tinneke Beeckman vult aan: “Door het internet zijn er invloeden waar de samenleving vandaag geen enkele greep op heeft. Radicale jongeren staan in contact met haatpredikers in het buitenland. Voor hen is dat heel direct en dichtbij, terwijl wij die stem volledig moeten missen”.

Hoofddoekendebat Het is niet dat we het niet hadden kunnen voorspellen. Of dat niemand het voorspeld heeft… Professor de Saeger organiseerde in 2007 aan de VUB een debat over de multireligieuze samenleving. De insteek: hoofddoeken.

De signalen waren hem en andere specialisten toen al duidelijk. “Ten eerste een zeer grote demografische groei die voor malcontente mensen zorgt. Dat zag ik ook in Jeruzalem, want daar gebeurt het ook. Bij een klein deel jonge mannen tussen 15 en 30 jaar in de joodse chassidische gemeenschap herken je eenzelfde reflex, die zich weliswaar onder andere vormen uit. Of in de VS waar extremistische christenen aanslagen tegen abortusklinieken plegen. Hier in Europa zitten we in een context van islamitisch extremisme. En het gaat snel. Ontzettend snel.”

Werner de Saeger heeft het verder over het gebrek aan een geïntegreerde allochtone elite.

“Bij wie zit in onze maatschappij de macht? Aan hooggerechtshoven, in de medische wereld, de bedrijfswereld, de politieke top?” En hij haalt ook het theologische discours aan. “Heel dat wahabitisch-salafistisch discours veegt een millennium aan complex en rijk debat van de kaart. Weet je dat Al-Ghazali (Perzisch filosoof en soefist, 1058-1111, nvdr) in de middeleeuwen over twijfel sprak? Dat gooien ze allemaal overboord en in de plaats daarvan houden ze zich aan één boek dat ze zo simpel mogelijk interpreteren. Maar zelfs als je stelt dat jongeren naar Syrië vertrekken met ‘Islam for Dummies’ in hun rugzak, het blijft een bepaald religieus discours dat aangewend wordt om hen aan te trekken. En het punt is: ondertussen praten we niet meer over hoofddoeken, maar vloeit er bloed in de straten van Europa.”

Religie aan de VUB. Klinkt provocerend.

En toch steigerde haast niemand meer toen Mohammed Ben Siamar in 2007 het keuzevak islam kwam geven. Hij vindt dat zelf ook niet gek: “Het heeft niets met praktiseren te maken, wel met nadenken over religies.

Tijdens de lessen “Inleiding tot de islam” hadden we het over het onstaan, over de regio, over socio-economisch-politiek-religieuze situaties in het Midden-Oosten… ” Tinneke Beeckman heeft het over hoe je uit traditie kunt leren: “Ik raadde mijn VUB-studenten altijd aan een Bijbel te kopen.

In die teksten zit een visie op omgaan met emoties, met de dood, met angsten… Al zou ik nog liever hebben dat je vanaf je zes tot achttien jaar een cursus filosofie krijgt naast de lessen godsdienst. Dan leer je al van jongs af kijken en vergelijken: Wat is er ooit al gezegd over wat het betekent om man te zijn? Om vrouw te zijn?

Wat zijn de gevolgen van de verschillende antwoorden die je vindt? Als je daarbij ook leert dat je je niet moet identificeren met een idee, maar kunt nadenken en het recht hebt om te twijfelen, dan ben je op weg naar een democratische samenleving.”

De Koran dus. Aan de VUB. De Bijbel ook.

En ook een heel aandeel gesluierde studentes.

“Er zijn vrijzinnigen die niets van religie moeten hebben. Voor hen is wetenschap de bron van alle kennis. Anderen nemen die wetenschappelijke benadering als uitgangspunt, maar merken dat er daarnaast vragen zijn die onbeantwoord blijven.

Daar kan religie een rol in spelen.

In Vlaanderen is vrijzinnigheid sterk gekoppeld aan niet-godsdienstig, niet-confessioneel.

Maar bijvoorbeeld in Nederland heb je vrijzinnige protestanten die zeer liberaal omgaan met hun religie. In die zin kun je ook perfect een vrijzinnige moslim zijn. Met hoofddoek. Je benadert geloof dan niet als iets dat gegeven is en waaraan je je moet onderwerpen, maar als iets waar je als mens zin aan geeft. En je mag dat ook in vraag stellen. Uiteindelijk is religie altijd mensenwerk.

Mensen die zich onderwerpen, doen dat zelf.

Er is in de religie niets dat hen daartoe dwingt.

Op die manier kun je vanuit een vrijzinnig perspectief de extremistische bewegingen deconstrueren. Mensen zijn zelf verantwoordelijk en daar kun je hen ook op aanspreken.”

Vrij onderzoek en religie Julie Umbrain, voorzitter van de Studiekring Vrij Onderzoek (VO), onderschrijft dat: “Op het eerste gezicht zijn de VUB en religie onverenigbaar. Omdat Poincaré al in zijn slagzinnen schrijft dat het denken niet aan een dogma – godsdienst dus – onderworpen mag zijn. Maar ik begrijp niet in welke mate ik ervan uit mag gaan dat iemand die religieus is niet aan vrij denken kan doen. Vrij denken doen we omdat we op zoek zijn naar een antwoord. Door middel van debat, door gedachten te delen, door jezelf in vraag te stellen. Bij vrij onderzoek hoort het proces waarin je tijdens een vraagstelling zelf bepaalt wanneer een antwoord voor jou volstaat.

Ik ga ervan uit dat de basis waarop wij argumenten bouwen wetenschappelijk is.

Maar misschien kan die basis in een ander kader ook religie zijn? Zolang religie maar niet als excuus wordt gebruikt. Zolang wij zo ver mogelijk kunnen gaan in ons debat. Dogmatische religie, dat is zoals racisme, daar kun je niet mee vooruit.

Na een tijdje loopt de weg dood.”

Mohammed Ben Siamar ziet het toch net iets anders: “Tot nu toe zijn religie en vrij onderzoek, of religie en wetenschap, nooit goed samengegaan. Eerst had je de greep van de godsdienst op het onderzoek en dat was niet goed. In de tweede helft van de vorige eeuw groeiden de twee steeds meer uit elkaar, maar ook dat bleek geen oplossing. Anders zouden we hier vandaag dit interview niet doen.

Godsdienst en cultuur moeten terug naar elkaar groeien, maar niet ten nadele van het ene of het andere. Ze mogen op gelijke hoogte komen. Bijvoorbeeld: atheïsten geloven niet in creationisme, maar het zou goed zijn als ze mensen met creationistische ideeën respecteren en met hen in dialoog gaan.”

Kan dat? “Ja, dat kan. Wat mij betreft sluit het ene het andere niet uit.” Terwijl Mohammed Ben Siamar een pleidooi voert voor verschillende interpretaties van teksten, haalt hij daar toch een zeer heikel punt aan. Voor Werner de Saeger is het duidelijk: “Via een kritische en wetenschappelijke benadering moeten we tegen een pseudowetenschap zoals het creationisme ingaan.”

De bubbel “Wij leven ook maar in onze bubbel, dat besef ik”, besluit Julie Umbrain. “Ons denkkader wordt ook beïnvloed door het nieuws dat we bekijken, de krant die we lezen, de vrienden die we hebben.

En zo gaan wij soms ook uit van ons grote gelijk.

Het ging zelfs zo ver dat het Vrij Onderzoek een imago van dogmatisch atheïsme kreeg. Ja, dan falen we wel in onze taak, vind ik. Wat wij willen, is het licht laten schijnen over donkere plekken in de samenleving. Religie hoort daarbij. En we willen duidelijk maken wat de V in VUB betekent.

Dans alsof niemand kijkt, breng je presentatie aan een publieke spreekstoel, draag een religieus gedicht voor en stel maar de meest domme vragen. Je bent student. Je bent vrij. Alles mag.

Want wie zijn wij om iets op te leggen?

Dat is betweterig en brengt niemand iets bij.”

DAAR IS DEXXX RELIGIE WEER

Is er plaats voor gebed aan de VUB? Er is hevig over gediscussieerd. Gebedsruimte aan de VUB of niet? En als we het een stille ruimte noemen?

“Het was een idee met veel nuances van een van mijn studenten humanistiek een aantal jaar geleden”, herinnert professor Coene zich. “Kijk, eigenlijk is de vraag dan: hoe ga je om met religie in de samenleving, aan een universiteit?

Als vrijzinnige hecht je veel belang aan individuele gewetensvrijheid. En religieuze vrijheid hoort daar volgens mij bij. Het discussiepunt is dat godsdienst vanuit onze traditie een soort speciale bescherming krijgt, terwijl je ook andere levensbeschouwelijke overtuigingen kunt hebben die even belangrijk zijn. Ik zeg niet dat een instelling of overheid alle overtuigingen als gelijkwaardig moet respecteren, maar wel de mensen die die overtuigingen hebben. Je hebt dan twee mogelijkheden. Ofwel kies je ervoor op geen enkele vraag in te gaan en denk je dat je zo iedereen op dezelfde manier respecteert, maar dan respecteer je eigenlijk niet echt iets en dwing je mensen in te gaan tegen hun diepe overtuigingen.

Ofwel zorg je ervoor dat mensen binnen redelijke grenzen hun overtuigingen kunnen beleven. Een voorbeeld is het vegetarisme als ethische overtuiging. En daarnaast een moslim die halal wil eten. Blijf je in het studentenrestaurant heel strikt aanbieden wat altijd al op het menu stond, dan respecteer je eigenlijk niemand. Maar kies je voor een vegetarische optie, dan spreek je zowel vegetariërs als moslims aan. Halal betekent dat dieren ritueel geslacht zijn, daar bestaan aan de VUB ethische bezwaren tegen en dus vind ik niet dat dat in het aanbod moet. Je moet ook de eigen overtuigingen niet overtreden. Je kunt ook niet voor alles en nog wat uitzonderingen maken. Maar wel als het niemand stoort en je helpt er mensen mee in de beleving van hun vrijheid. Dat is wat wij de “redelijke aanpassingen” noemen.”

Een gebedsruimte bleek geen “redelijke aanpassing”.

De VUB besloot dan ook geen gebedsruimte in te richten.

JULIE UMBRAIN is finalising her thesis on adult educational sciences and is president of the Studiekring Vrij Onderzoek, the Free Inquiry Study Circle, until May.

MOHAMMED BEN SIAMAR has a degree in history from the university of Tétouan in Morocco and has taught Islam at the Faculty of Comparative Religions (FVG) in Antwerp. Between 2007 and 2014 he taught Introduction to Islam at VUB, an optional course managed by the FVG, with whom VUB has a cooperation agreement. He now primarily teaches Islam in secondary schools.

TINNEKE BEECKMAN has a doctorate in moral sciences from VUB and has taken additional courses in economy, globalisation and democratisation at the London School of Economics and the University of Maastricht’s Brussels campus. She previously taught at VUB and now teaches at the School of Life in Antwerp. She is a columnist for De Standaard, gives lectures and publishes books.

A prayer room at the university hospital, an ultra-Catholic private school opening in Overijse, discussions about a quiet space at EN VUB and weekend papers that want to shine a light on Islam: it seems religion is undergoing something of a revival. “But that’s only at a local level,” says religious scholar Professor Werner de Saeger.

“Around the world, religion has always been in the foreground. Now, here, we’re seeing the arrival of a thriving culture that’s retaking its place on our public stage.” It’s something that VUB encounters every day, and something that liberal thinkers find themselves wrestling with.

Professor Gily Coene, who published the book Vrij(heid) van Religie at the end of last year, sees it too. She pits the strictly neutralist liberal thinkers against a more pluralistic starting point that respects every different attitude to life. “I see a tradition in subjects and courses at VUB in which religion is seen as a meaningful human activity. So in this sense, religion is not necessarily contradictory to liberty or humanism,” she says. She is referring to lessons including Religious Criticism taught by Tinneke Beeckman and Introduction to Islam with Mohammed Ben Siamar. So religion has entered VUB, through both the Bible and the Koran – and hardly anybody has found it strange.

GILY COENE has been a professor of moral sciences and humanism in the department of philosophy and moral sciences since 2006, and is a part-time member of the political sciences department.

She is also the director of RHEA, VUB's expertise centre for gender, diversity and intersectionality, and a member of ETHU, the centre for ethics and humanism.

WERNER DE SAEGER studied law, philosophy and history at a variety of European and American universities, among them VUB, and as a researcher, he spent time among religious communities in Europe and the Middle East.

He teaches part-time at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge as well as at VUB. In February, he opened the VUB’s Alviella Institute, an expertise centre for the critical study of religion. www.alviella.org

RELIGION AT VUB An independent university is looking for answers. What about freedom of expression? Where does extremism come from?

What about religious symbols and hijabs? “In Flanders, liberal thinking is strictly non-denominational. But in the Netherlands, for example, you have Protestants who are very liberal in how they deal with their religion,” says Coene. “In this sense, you can perfectly well be a liberal Muslim. You approach faith not as something you have to submit to, but as something that gives your life meaning. And you can also question it. What’s more, you can deconstruct the extremist movement from a liberal perspective. Religion is always about people: there is nothing in religion itself that compels people. They are responsible themselves, and you can appeal to them.” Julie Umbrain, president of the Free Inquiry Study Circle (Studiekring Vrij Onderzoek), recognises a role for VUB in the debate. “We believe in free thinking because we are seeking answers,” she says. “Through debate, through sharing opinions, through questioning ourselves, through independent research. It’s up to VUB to illuminate the dark places in our society.”

Belgian babies start off sweeter Does growing up in the land of frites and chocolate have an impact on the healthy eating habits of babies and toddlers? Professor Koen Huysentruyt and his team might have the answer.

Though eating patterns developed at a young age are likely to have a big influence on later eating habits, physique and health, we don’t know much about the eating habits

of babies and toddlers.

To find out if these are in line with national recommendations, Huysentruyt’s team researched the intake of 265 children aged six months to 36 months old from across Belgium. The representative sample was stratified for geographical region, sex and socioeconomic status of the mother. The researchers entered data from detailed

food diaries that tracked consumption into the Belgian nutritional software programme Nubel (www.nubel. be) to identify and analyse the children’s main sources of energy and macronutrients – proteins, carbohydrates and fats. The findings, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, show that children across Belgium are eating too many high-cal-

the ‘clever roof with a cocoon’ designed

by Professor Marijke Mollaert and Jan Roekens from the Department of Architectural Engineering (ARCH) is a significant improvement on traditional solutions used following natural disasters. This innovative shelter – developed with support from the European S(P)EEDKITS project and with the textile producers Sioen Industries, the Polytechnic University of Milan and the International Red Cross’s Shelter Research Unit – was demonstrated during the 2015 AidEx conference in Brussels.

The clever roof can be set up quickly and

spans 24 square metres, offering protection from rain, sun and wind. The cocoon, a closed unit made of coated fabrics and felts, can be set up underneath. The cocoon offers better thermal insulation and acoustic isolation than standard relief tents, while the separate roof provides a larger protected living space.

For instance, cooking over a fire can be done more safely outside the cocoon but under the roof, still protected from the elements.

A recent field test was performed in Senegal.

Small particles, big changes You may not have heard of nanoporous materials – materials with pores less than a millionth of a metre wide – but their uses are legion, with applications in many environmentally friendly technologies: green chemistry, safe drug delivery, and capturing co2 from the air.

Even household dishwashers increasingly use microporous zeolite minerals which dry using much less energy.

Overturning conventional assumptions about how nanoporous materials work, Professor Joeri Denayer, Dr Julien Cousin Saint-Remi and colleagues at the University of Leipzig (led by Professor Jörg Kärger), have discovered that even apparently identical crystals from the same batch of nanoporous materials may behave differently. Thanks to advanced micro-imaging techniques, molecules could be seen migrating through individual crystals at different rates.

This finding may radically alter future research in the field, as current techniques have been based on the assumption that nanoporous crystals act uniformly.

The results of this joint work may advance understanding of the diffusion mechanisms in nanoporous materials, while the detailed study of individual

IIHE, the ULB-VUB Interuniversity Institute for High Energies, has joined forces with scientists from the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina and the Telescope Array in Utah, USA. The institute houses one of the main European centres for analysis of data from IceCube, the one-cubic-kilometre international high-energy neutrino observatory built in the South Pole glacier.

As a result of this partnership, a new study pooling knowledge and comparing strategies for identifying the elusive particles has been submitted to the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics.

Harnessing the brain to tackle epilepsy

Epilepsy is one of the most common and disruptive neurological disorders.

Unfortunately, the anti-epileptic drugs currently available are not always effective and their side effects are often limiting.

R

esearchers Ilse Smolders and Dimitri De Bundel have discovered an innovative strategy that encourages molecules in the brain itself to fight epilepsy.

The results of their study were published in the Journal of Neuroscience, the world's most cited magazine for neuroscience.

An epileptic attack is accompanied by an abnormal, synchronised discharge of neurons. It has been known for some time that the electrical activity of the seizure itself causes the release of the hormone somatostatin, which supresses the electrical discharges when it comes into contact with somatostatin-2A (sst2A) receptors in the brain.

Though somatostatin is present during a seizure, it is not effectively used because sst2A receptors retreat deep into the cell, requiring about two hours to cycle back to the cell membrane.

Smolders, De Bundel and their teams – with collaboration from the universities Diderot and Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris, the University of Bristol, the University of Crete and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia – discovered a mechanism that makes it possible to accelerate the return of sst2A to the cell surface. Molecules administered to laboratory rats successfully bound the protein insulin-regulated aminopeptidase (IRAP) to the cell membrane and increased the density of available sst2A receptors in the plasma membrane.

This strategy confirms the effects of somatostatin in modulating limbic seizures and identifies IRAP as a new target, effectively making use of the brain’s own mechanisms for epilepsy treatments.— H The full paper is available at vubtoday.be/somastatin

Z

e kennen elkaar uit hun 1e kan Solvay, werden goede vrienden tijdens hun studie in de Rechten en liefjes nadat ze afstudeerden. Vandaag runt Frederic zijn bloeiende zaak in verzekeringen grotendeels vanuit India. Want daar werkt Babette, gaan de kinderen naar school en wonen ze in een tof huis.

En of ze daar graag over vertellen!

“Ik reis elke zes weken terug naar België. Blij dat we de stap gezet hebben.”

Dus jullie moesten eerst afstuderen om te ontdekken dat jullie voor elkaar gemaakt waren?

BABETTE DESFOSSEZ: “We zaten in dezelfde vriendenbende, ik zag hem terwijl hij in De Confrater werkte…

Maar meer dan kameraden waren we inderdaad niet.

Na Solvay, Handelswetenschappen, deden we allebei nog onze kandidatuur in de Rechten via een enige proef.

Ik in combinatie met een bijzondere licentie Buitenlandse Handel op Institut Cooremans, hij werkte ondertussen op het avondsecretariaat voor werkstudenten.

En toen vonden we wel wat steun bij elkaar…”

FREDERIC LEIRMAN: “Rechten leek mij een interessante richting, maar het bleek vooral wreed veel blokken en dat was mijn ding niet. Daarom is het ook bij die enige proef gebleven.”

BABETTE: “We hadden ook al zes jaar gestudeerd toen. Na mijn studies ben ik eerst drie maanden naar Spanje getrokken en nadien was het weerzien zo hartelijk dat we elkaar nooit meer losgelaten hebben (lacht breed). Ik ging aan de slag bij Philips, werkte een paar jaar bij Frederic op kantoor en vond toen een mooie plaats bij de FOD Financiën.”

En onder de vleugels van de FOD zijn jullie naar India vertrokken?

BABETTE: “Het was een van mijn dromen om in het buitenland te werken. In 2014 kwamen er drie posten voor douaneattachés vrij: Rusland, Zuid-Afrika en India.

Ik deed voor alle drie het examen mee. Veel kandidaten zijn er niet voor zo’n post, dus de kans dat je het haalt, is groot. En toen kwam het telefoontje: we konden vertrekken en moesten binnen het uur beslissen.

Maar ik kon Frederic niet bereiken!”

FREDERIC: “Later op de dag belde ik terug. Ik wenste Babette proficiat en beloofde dat we het er ’s avonds uitgebreid over zouden hebben… maar dat was al niet meer aan de orde. Ze had al toegezegd. Slik. Maar voor alles een oplossing. Ik werk vanop afstand en kom elke zes weken terug naar België. Blij dat we de stap gezet hebben.”

BABETTE: “Ik wist het half juli 2014, ben op 10 november met de kinderen vertrokken, rond kerst teruggekeerd en sinds januari 2015 wonen we er met z’n vieren. Voor vier, vijf of maximum zes jaar.“

Hebben jullie je zwaar moeten aanpassen?

BABETTE: “Neen! Wij zijn altijd veel met de rugzak op reis geweest, vaak naar Azië. Met de kinderen ook al twee keer. India was in de jaren ’90 mijn eerste reis buiten Europa, maar de coup de foudre waar je mensen soms over hoort, had ik er niet. En toch wonen we daar nu! En het is er heerlijk! Ga bijvoorbeeld maar eens met een hoofd vol migraine je zoons verjaardagstaart ophalen. “Ma’m!

What’s the matter with you? You want a seat? A glass of water? Are you fine?” En dat vragen ze op zo’n toon dat je niet kunt doen alsof alles prima gaat.”

En school, hoe gaat dat?

BABETTE: “Mijn grootste aanpassing in heel India was de Franse school. Wat een administratieve rompslomp.

Noam moest zijn laatste jaar opnieuw doen, zelfs al kon hij alleen maar goede punten voorleggen. Hij verveelde zich zo dat hij na een paar maanden toch mocht overschakelen.”

HET DNA VAN DE VUB

NOAM (14): “Zij leggen meer de nadruk op wetenschap, minder op wiskunde en ze dachten dat dat een probleem zou worden. Was dus niet. Op mijn nieuwe school had ik snel vrienden, van allemaal verschillende nationaliteiten.

Marokko, Spanje, India, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Griekenland, Armenië, Palestina, Canada… De meesten gaan van land naar land en zijn het gewoon om zich aan te passen en telkens opnieuw vrienden te maken. We gebruiken twee talen om met elkaar te communiceren: Frans en Engels.”

MAURA (11): “De lessen zijn de ene dag in het Engels, de volgende in het Frans.”

BABETTE: “We zorgen er ook wel voor dat ze hun Nederlands onderhouden, nu via afstandsonderwijs. Het is grappig hoe snel het Frans in hun taal sluipt. Er waren er veel absent vandaag, ik moet dat nog calculeren, ik heb 13 jaar…”

MAURA: “Mama, stop met ons uit te lachen!”

FREDERIC: “Wij gaan vooral kijken wat het interessantste is voor Noam: ofwel doet hij hier de laatste twee jaar middelbaar nog, ofwel gaat hij meteen naar de universiteit.”

De terugtocht Zijn er ook minpuntjes?

NOAM: “Ze zeggen dat het gevaarlijk is in Delhi: een grote stad, nieuws over verkrachtingen… Maar ik heb me nog nooit onveilig gevoeld. Ik ben ook een jongen natuurlijk, en we hebben een chauffeur die ons bijna binnenrijdt waar we willen zijn.”

FREDERIC: “Ach, in Brussel moet je ook je gezond verstand gebruiken. Het echte minpunt is de vervuiling.

Een app houdt me op de hoogte. 50 microgram fijnstof is volgens de OESO alarmerend. Hier in Veurne zitten we vandaag aan 38, in New Delhi aan 180. En dat is een goede dag!”

NOAM: “Meestal is dat 300 of 400. Dat betekent dat we nooit meer kunnen sporten, zelfs ’s avonds niet.”

Denken jullie soms al aan de terugtocht?

BABETTE: “We weten zeker dat die moeilijker zal zijn dan de heentocht. Nu hebben we een chauffeur, fulltime hulp in het huishouden, bij de kruideniers lopen ze met een mandje achter je aan, stapelen ze voor jou, laden ze alles in de auto… We worden erg verwend.”

En wordt dat dan VUB of ULB? NOAM: “Misschien eerder ULB. Ik vind het wel leuk als mama en papa over hun studententijd praten. En ik heb ook vrienden tussen de kinderen van papa’s studentenvrienden.”

FREDERIC: “Met Centre OP, onze oud-studentenvereniging in Oostende, organiseren we één keer per jaar een activiteit. Dit jaar deden onze kinderen de bar en dat schept een band. Maar het hangt er natuurlijk van af welke richting hij kiest. (Richt zich glimlachend tot zijn zoon) Of misschien kom je in India wel de liefde van je leven tegen…”

“India was geen coup de foudre.

En toch wonen we daar nu.

Frederik Leirman and Babette Desfossez graduated in 1994.

Today they have two children – Noam, 14, and Maura, 11 – and they live and work mainly in India. After all this time, and despite the distance, VUB is still a big part of their lives. Their involvement in the union of former students, Centre OP, and strong friendship bonds from their time here mean that the children already know which university they will eventually choose: VUB (or ULB), even if the rest of the world is at their feet.

At the beginning of 2015, the family moved to New Delhi, where they immediately felt at home, with a nice house, a friendly cleaner and new friends from all over the world. After a year, Noam and Maura speak almost better English and French than Dutch.

BABETTE: “Gisteren nog postte iemand een kotfoto op Facebook. Dan word je meteen teruggekatapulteerd in de tijd. Ik zat op de Nieuwelaan, Frederic op de campus, we hadden zulke toffe mensen rond ons. Het is de mooiste tijd van je leven. Je hebt ontzettend veel vrijheid en bijna geen verantwoordelijkheden. Gewoon zorgen dat je er op het einde van het jaar door bent, da’s alles.”— H

The only real downside is the pollution, which makes life difficult sometimes and can mean playing sport is often impossible.

But that doesn’t outweigh the plus points. Babette’s posting with the federal financial authority will last four, five or six years.

In the meantime, Frederik works as an insurance agent, which he can do at a distance, and every six weeks he travels back to Belgium, with or without the children. If they stay in India for six years, Noam can go straight to university when they return. Frederik and Babette hope he will have as good a time there as they did.

Olivier Vanden Eynde koos zes jaar lang heel bewust voor een kot aan de Nieuwelaan omdat hij daar de hele wereld ontmoette.

Hij was er dol op! Vandaag is het gebouw netjes gerenoveerd, maar zijn kamer van toen is nog bijna niet veranderd. En de wereldkeuken, die ruik je er ook nog, elke dag.

'Schat, kom! We gaan naar mijn oud kot!' Olivier Vanden Eynde troont zijn vrouw mee in de richting van de Nieuwelaan.

"Ik koos jaar na jaar bewust voor een kot aan de Nieuwelaan.

Belgen wilden daar niet heen, maar ik wel. Daar zaten toen alle studenten die uit het buitenland kwamen.

En dat kon je ruiken!

Elke verdieping had haar eigen geur. Je wist meteen waar er Chinezen of Afrikanen zaten. Die mensen kwamen van een totaal andere cultuur. Dat gaf sfeer en dat zocht ik op. Ik heb ooit een Afrikaanse kotgenoot gehad die zijn vlees gewoon in een houten kastje achter slot en grendel stak, omdat hij dat nu eenmaal zo gewend was.

Ik vond het knap hoe de VUB ons samenbracht. Ik heb hier altijd graag gezeten. Ik ging misschien één keer om de zes weken naar huis!'

Op de vierde verdieping trekt Olivier resoluut een deur open: 'Hier zit de keuken - nee.

We accompanied Olivier Vanden Eynde on a visit to his old room in the renovated dormitories in Nieuwelaan. He was excited about going back to room 1409, and eager to share anecdotes from his life as a student here. Even later wijst Olivier zonder aarzelen zijn deur aan, kamer 1409, en we treden binnen in het huidige kot van Aicha. 'Het kot is nog altijd hetzelfde, afgezien van de eigen douche. Het uitzicht is nog identiek. Na zes jaar wist ik perfect wie hier woonde, wie schaars gekleed ging en wie zich wanneer aankleedde! In mijn tijd lag het er wel veel slordiger bij…'

'Maar da's nog altijd hetzelfde, allez, hier, die pot Nutella!' Buiten bestudeert hij de voorgevel: 'Het is veranderd. Gerenoveerd.

Die kleurtjes zijn mooi!' Op de terugweg wijst hij ons waar zijn

favoriete Chinese restaurant is: ‘Ik belde hen zo vaak dat ze me herkenden aan mijn stem.

Ze kennen mij zelfs nu nog: een tijd geleden belde ik hen, en de eigenaar herkende mijn stem!

En ook in het tankstation hier kwam ik vaak, aan het station van Etterbeek. Dat was ’s nachts open en tijdens de examenperiode ging ik daar vaak ijsjes halen om drie uur ’s ochtends. Is dat nu nog altijd zo laat open?

Daar zullen ze nog wel vaak studenten krijgen..!’ ― H

De veiligheidsconcepten van de luchtvaart pas ik ook toe in het operatiekwartier.

Is het de juiste patiënt?

Moet hij wel degelijk aan zijn rechterbeen geopereerd worden? Is het juiste materiaal aanwezig, enz.

Let the music play Huge numbers of professional musicians and music students suffer from muscular problems and performance anxiety.

Biomechanics specialist Professor Jean-Pierre Baeyens and his team go beneath the skin to explore potential prevention and treatment for an under-reported problem Text Sally Tipper Photography Saskia Vanderstichele

T

he smell of chlorine from the swimming pool below lingers in the corridors, while faint cries from the sports field drift in through the open windows.

It’s perhaps not a place you’d expect to find an erstwhile art historian working on interventions to tackle performance anxiety among classical musicians. But here in the faculty of physical education and physiotherapy is indeed where you’ll find Professor Jean-Pierre Baeyens, whose research could change the lives of countless musicians who are currently suffering for their art.

“I got my master’s in biomedical sciences and my doctorate in rehabilitation sciences and physiotherapy, but I also have a master’s degree in art history and archaeology,” Baeyens says of his academic background. “So as an art historian, I’ve always had a strong connection with the arts.”

Is he musical himself? “Not at all,” he says with a laugh.

“I don’t play music; I play basketball.”

Despite his earlier artistic leanings, Baeyens now specialises in biomechanics, the field in which scientists use the principles of mechanics to tackle biological problems.

At the crossroads of physics and biology, to outsiders it’s a discipline perhaps more readily associated with the world of athletics and post-trauma rehabilitation. But years ago, while working as an independent manual therapist, Baeyens found himself treating a number of opera singers who suffered from recurring neck pain. This practical experience as a therapist, combined with his existing interest in the arts, was the spark that inspired his research into the wider physical problems suffered by professional musicians during rehearsals and performance.

Vulnerable to injury Playing a musical instrument professionally is a very demanding task, involving both physical and mental skills developed over a lifetime of learning and practice. Just like athletes, musicians frequently suffer from various mild to severe performance-related problems, or PRPs, including musculoskeletal disorders, peripheral nerve problems and a very specific neurological problem known as focal dystonia, or musician’s cramp. Performance stress only compounds these physical ailments. Baeyens and his team are busy studying the underlying processes in the hope of finding practical applications that can address the problem in individuals before it’s too late.

So far, research has been mainly limited to epidemiological studies, identifying reports of specific stressors. It’s been shown that such problems among music academy students and professional musicians are frequent, with reported prevalence ranging from 39 to 90%. On top of this, many musicians use beta blockers to cope with performance anxiety, an affliction that can cause a speeded-up heart rate, trembling voice, sweating, dizziness and shaky hands.

These previous studies also show that problems can emerge in tertiary, secondary and occasionally even earlier levels of education, with those affected vulnerable to developing further injuries as their academic and professional careers advance. Baeyens’s research project – known as motor learning and repetitive strain injury in musicians, or MOREMU – focuses initially on classical music students who are studying at conservatory level, and for this he works with the conservatories of Brussels, Maastricht and Lugano, as well as the Brussels Philharmonic

Intense practice The onset of performance-related problems coincides with the transition period as musicians enter a conservatory, and can be ascribed to the increase in rehearsal hours and competition as students’ careers progress to the next level. “It’s a very intense, high-pressure environment in the conservatories,” says Baeyens. “So often we find that musicians may be suffering from pain but they won’t tell their tutors or even their classmates about it, because there’s such a stigma attached to it.” This taboo is reflected by the fact that one in three of the affected students in a previous study admitted that they didn’t seek help for the problem at all.

MOREMU, set up three years ago, focuses on the musculoskeletal factors associated with these symptoms. The team work on site at the conservatories with subjects including pianists, violinists, cellists and flautists. During the investigation, the movement behaviour of the shoulder girdle, neck and spine is measured by means of 3D optoelectronic tracking using Vicon motion-capture technology. At the same time, surface electromyography (EMG) is applied to capture the electrical activity of the muscles. “In the first phase, we are looking at the muscle strain that musicians suffer during performances. We are also looking at the effects of long periods of rehearsal on the shoulder and neck region,” Baeyens explains.

“Using all these monitoring devices, we can measure the extent of the physical stress as they are playing.”

algorithms, he says. “For instance, in order to properly analyse the surface EMG data we obtained while a subject was playing a very dynamic music score, we explored an approach using wavelets, based on the pioneering work of physicist Ingrid Daubechies, a VUB alumna. The results suggest adaptations to practice sessions that last for longer than an hour under particularly high muscular loadings.”

Apparent discrepancy The team have also investigated performance anxiety in professional musicians playing with the Brussels Philharmonic.

“To do this, we used questionnaires and physiological measurements such as skin conductance and heart rate variability, using ECG sensors,” he explains. “The results

Somewhere between 39 and 90% of students at music academies and professional musicians report musculoskeletal problems, compared to between 2 and 60% among the general working population. It’s also estimated that about 17% of professional musicians use beta blockers with the aim of overcoming performance anxiety. In a study of 180 instrumental conservatory students, 90% reported that they had experienced performance-related problems at least once in their lives, with 12% experiencing pain every time they play. And more than one third said they tended not to seek any help for the problem.

There are a number of factors that can play a part in these physical and emotion-

showed individual differences: for example, some professionals presented more stress during rehearsals with the conductor than they did during a public performance, while others displayed the opposite.” The musicians themselves may be unaware – or perhaps in denial – of these issues. Baeyens: “We also found that there was an apparent discrepancy between the measurements we took – which demonstrated physiological indications of significant performance stress – and the psychological questionnaires our subjects filled in, which indicated only minor stress.”

What frequently occurs next is a particularly vicious circle: certain factors cause stress, and efforts to alleviate the problem only exacerbate it. For

instance, a physical complaint has an impact on a musician’s playing quality, leading to anxiety about performance, which may push them to use medication. They increase the duration and intensity of their practice in an attempt to compensate, but by overloading the muscles, this further decreases the quality of their playing. Emotional stress increases, and the cycle continues.

The capacity for motor learning, by which the brain changes in response to practice, is also diminished.

And these problems increase with time if they are not addressed early on.

“The more information and insight we have concerning the origin of these PRP syndromes in adolescence, the better we will be able to protect future musicians from unwanted physical impair-

al problems encountered during long rehearsals and high-pressure performance.

By their nature, study programmes at conservatories demand extended practice of advanced skills in a high muscle-loading context. This might mean students have to endure long periods of abnormal posture coupled with inappropriate or poor technique. For many, the act of performing in public causes them anxiety, while the element of competition can cause stress for others.

A particular repertoire may be technically difficult, or the instrument itself may present its own specific difficulties.

And of course, a musician’s own personal characteristics play a part, be it perfectionism or particular vulnerability to criticism and self-doubt.

The conservatories themselves might call in physiotherapists to treat the symptoms, but that’s curative and we’re much more interested in prevention than in cure. Something we also find is that there might be a different attitude to therapy among the artistic community, and that they tend to opt for alternative methods of treatment.

“But the fact is, very simple ergonomic interventions can make a real difference to the problem: adding extra supports to a violin, for example, to ease the stress of holding it in place, or changing the seats that musicians sit in during performances and rehearsals to something more comfortable than the chairs they tend to use at the moment.”

The next step The team’s first measurements and analyses are now finished. The next step is to communicate these findings to the musicians themselves, making them conscious of the problems and the vicious circles they are confronted with.

But Baeyens believes that further exploration of the problems suffered by music students still needs to be carried out.

“Better understanding of the efficiency of various treatment interventions after the occurrence of PRPs, and a change in attitudes towards their application, will provide us with additional insights for prevention and treatment,” he says. There is work on the subject taking place around the world, and this team of researchers are part of a small but growing community. “I present at symposia, but often you find that there are not that many people there, maybe only thirty,” he says. “That really makes for a much more honest, open and supportive research community.”

And he has high hopes for this particular project. “The research will be furthered based on our first results. One day, I hope we might even be looking at an expertise centre here at VUB that specialises in repetitive strain injury and motor control in musicians,” he says. “A place where we can study this phenomenon and develop our research into applications for prevention and treatment – but right now, that’s really just a dream.”

TEAMWORK The MOREMU project team is made up of Baeyens, his assistant Ben Serrien and a couple of master’s students, but practical organisation of a project like this is impossible without help, he is keen to point out. In this case, the work his team has carried out is possible thanks to collaboration with Dr Kristin Van den Buys of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, and Dr Ron Clijsen, who supports their work at the conservatory in Lugano. Musical expertise

His aim was to continue his career at university in his homeland, but the war has put paid to those dreams. So far Salman’s work has resulted in an online registration tool. It is expected that about 100 refugees will be able to continue their studies in September.

Is de opkomst van China een tijger in de tank van onze economie? Of besluipt het gele gevaar ons zonder dat we het zelf beseffen? Over deze kwesties verschillen weinig mensen meer van mening dan Jan Cornelis en Jonathan Holslag. Jan Cornelis, als vicerector bevoegd voor internationalisering, is een “officiële” vriend van China, politicoloog Jonathan Holslag een bijzonder koele minnaar. “Om een volledig beeld van China te schetsen, zouden we eigenlijk moeten samenwerken.”

oven een kom dampende noedelsoep in de Brusselse Chinatown blijkt het tweetal het aanvankelijk toch over enkele dingen eens. Dat de smoezeligheid van een Chinees restaurant weinig zegt over de kwaliteit van het eten dat het serveert, bijvoorbeeld. En dat het aangenaam samenwerken is met Chinezen.

“In China zijn persoonlijke relaties veel belangrijker dan bij ons. People to people dialogue noemen ze dat.

Chinezen structureren en plannen veel minder. Alles is gebaseerd op het feit dat mensen elkaar vinden.Van bij mijn eerste bezoek was ik enorm gecharmeerd door de mensen”, vertelt Cornelis.

“Ik deel die ervaring”, zegt Holslag. “Ik heb veel vrienden in China, zowel bij diplomaten als bij academici. Met de Chinese studenten bij ons kan je fascinerende discussies voeren, op een heel openhartige manier. Maar als je kijkt naar onze belangen, dan zijn er wel enkele problemen.”

Wat is het probleem met China?

HOLSLAG: “Het belangrijkste is het onevenwichtige economisch “In Europa gooien we te partnerschap. Op de lopende vaak onze knowhow te rekening kost China ons op Belgisch grabbel. Niet alleen aan niveau jaarlijks ongeveer een miljard. de Chinezen trouwens.”

Door de Chinese opkomst zijn de Russen, de Golfstaten en ook enkele Afrikaanse landen meer weerwerk gaan bieden tegen Europa. Opnieuw, je kan dat de Chinezen niet kwalijk nemen, maar we moeten er wel op een kritische manier mee omgaan.”

Wat betekent dat voor de samenwerking op universitair vlak?

CORNELIS: “Als universiteit kan en mag je je niet beperken tot deze eenzijdige macro-economische en geopolitieke visie. Ook buiten het universitaire zijn er verschillende gelijkwaardige gezichtspunten.

Hoe verklaar je de aanwezigheid van al die Belgische industriëlen in overheidszendingen naar China?

Als er economisch geen toegevoegde waarde uit samenwerking met China te halen is, zijn die dan allemaal zo naïef?

Als universiteit kunnen we op dit vlak ook deuren openen, via onze peer-to-peerrelaties. Academici staan in China zeer hoog op de waardeschaal.”

HOLSLAG: “Om het cru te stellen: veel bedrijven waren inderdaad naïef. Ze trokken met te hoge verwachtingen naar China, onderschatten de enorme competitie en deelden te gemakkelijk hun kennis.

Jaarlijks halen Belgische bedrijven amper 84 miljoen euro aan investeringsinkomsten op uit China.

Dat is zakgeld, hé.”

“Maar de universitaire samenwerking moet zeker doorgaan, al was het maar omdat er wel degelijk kansen liggen. Maar om die kansen effectief te optimaliseren moet je heel strategisch te werk gaan, bijvoorbeeld wat toegang tot absoluut toponderzoek betreft. Daar moet een zekere wederkerigheid in komen.

CORNELIS: “De suggestie dat er geen wederkerigheid bestaat in de samenwerking is gebaseerd op een verouderd of onvolledig inzicht.

De onderzoeksexcellentie en academische belangstelling voor internationalisatie in China ontwikkelen zich zeer snel.”

Ontbreekt het dan niet aan evenwicht in de relaties tussen de VUB en Chinese universiteiten?

CORNELIS: “De tijd dat kennis in één richting ging is voorbij. Misschien hebben we organisatorisch nog wat voorsprong, maar qua pure kennis staan we op gelijke voet. In de robotica werken we samen met Peking University aan een enkelprothese, in Xi’an hebben we een gezamenlijk laboratorium over audiovisuele signaalverwerking, in mijn onderzoeksgroep heeft een Chinese uitwisselingsstudent de theoretisch-wiskundige basis gelegd voor een ground penetrating radar.

HOLSLAG: “Industrialiserende landen spelen altijd leentjebuur. Dat kan je niet tegenhouden, maar als overheid kan je wel sturen, zodat dit de samenleving niet verzwakt.”

CORNELIS: “En zodat nieuwe kansen op expansie gerealiseerd worden.”

Oneerlijke concurrentie CORNELIS: “China heeft een sterk centraal gezag, waardoor het veel strategischer kan optreden. Neem milieu. Met de prioriteit die China daar nu aan geeft, ben ik er zeker van dat het ons over tien jaar voorbijgestoken heeft en dat we allemaal milieutechnologie gaan kopen in China. Ze zijn massaal bezig met elektrische voertuigen, ze worden de grootste leverancier van producten die te maken hebben met zonne-energie. Dat China meespeelt op het wereldtoneel voelt natuurlijk bedreigend aan.”

HOLSLAG: “De Chinezen hebben de milieu-uitdaging omgezet in een economische kans en er honderden miljarden aan goedkoop krediet tegenaan gegooid, zodat bedrijven als Suntech een hoge vlucht hebben

genomen en de hele Europese productiecapaciteit hebben verpletterd, waardoor je natuurlijk de innovatie richting China ziet vertrekken.”

“Ik ga uit van een toenemende en steeds zichtbaardere verzwakking van onze eigen samenleving.

We spreken vaak over Vlaanderen als een exportland, maar Vlaanderen is een importland geworden.

Dat vergt een antwoord. Een bijsturing van onze interne economische politiek, maar ook een bijsturing van onze handelspolitiek. We kunnen niet volhouden dat onze havens uitsluitend made in China behandelen, terwijl onze eigen maakindustrie zo goed als verdwijnt. Opnieuw, dat is niet alleen de schuld van de Chinezen, dat is evenzeer de schuld van de Duitsers bijvoorbeeld.”

CORNELIS: “De vrijemarkteconomie hebben wij wel uitgevonden, hé. China begint die nu…”

HOLSLAG: “… selectief!”

CORNELIS: “… selectief over te nemen en haalt daar competitief voordeel uit. Het mogelijke gebrek aan evenwicht is vooral te wijten aan een onvermogen van het Westen om daar een juist antwoord op te geven.”

HOLSLAG: “Daar ben ik het mee eens. Het ligt eerder aan de naïviteit en de kortzichtigheid van de Europese landen. Dat wij ons zo laten rollen, niet alleen door de

Chinezen maar ook door de Amerikanen, is bijzonder frustrerend. Het is niet normaal dat wij als Europese economie al twintig jaar met een deficit zitten.”

Bent u het eens met die analyse, professor Cornelis?

“Als je uitspraken niet gebaseerd zijn op eigen onderzoek, misbruik je je titel van professor.”

CORNELIS: “Eigenlijk wel.

Wat Jonathan Holslag zegt, is algemeen bekend, maar als universiteit hebben we ook andere professoren met andere perspectieven.

De universiteit heeft een voortrekkersrol te vervullen. Je kan geen 1,3 miljard mensen negeren. Zoals ik al zei, kan je ten velde met Chinese partners samenwerken. Als dat gebeurt met wederzijds respect, dan levert dat positieve resultaten op.

Als ik dan lees wat Jonathan in de media vertelt over die samenwerking, bijvoorbeeld over de Chinese vrouwen…”

HOLSLAG: “Dit zijn de standpunten die ik inneem in de media: China is geen vrijemarkteconomie. Met 245 miljard aan exportsteun is er gewoon geen eerlijke concurrentie.

HET GROTE CHINA-DEBAT

Het deficit tussen Europa en China moeten we aanpakken.

Een ander element is meer strategisch. Er zit wel degelijk een agenda achter de Chinese militaire machtsontplooiing die storend is. Is die minder storend dan de Amerikaanse of de Russische machtsontplooiing? Neen, maar ze stoort evengoed.”

CORNELIS: “Het beeld van de Aziatische tijger en het Gele Gevaar is van een andere eeuw. Een groot budget voor de militaire sector in China lijkt me logisch, maar oorlogszuchtige neigingen?

Er zijn veel territoriale betwistingen, maar die worden tot nog toe niet met geweld beslecht, maar veeleer in de ijskast gestopt. Dat waakzaamheid geboden is, betwist ik niet, maar ik zie in China zeer weinig agressie.Als ik dat vergelijk met bijvoorbeeld de Verenigde Staten…”

“Politieke wetenschappers treden vaak meer op als policy makers dan als wetenschappers. Jonathan Holslag is daar niet de enige in. Dat mag hé, opiniemaker zijn, maar als je uitspraken niet gebaseerd zijn op eigen onderzoek, dan misbruik je je titel van professor om autoriteit te geven aan een mening die niet zwaarder weegt dan die van een ander.

Jonathan Holslag is een degelijk onderzoeker, maar hij gaat ook graag mee in het overdrijven van de media, in de sensatie.”

HOLSLAG: “Nu doet u alsof ik geen onderzoek verricht. Mijn laatste boek heeft dan wel een dramatische titel in de Engelse versie, de tekst werd nagelezen door vier onderzoekers, werd lovend besproken in journals, ja zelfs aanbevolen door een professor van de Chinese Centrale Partijschool. Mijn bevindingen over de Chinese exportpolitiek berusten op papers die gepubliceerd werden in zogenoemde A1-tijdschriften.”

“Mijn analyses zijn niet alleen vanuit helikopterzicht gemaakt.

Ik heb Chinese onderhandelingen meegemaakt. Ik werk heel vaak met bedrijven die in China actief zijn en van wie ik alle uitdagingen te horen krijg. Ik zit niet de hele tijd boeken te lezen of in tv-studio’s. Ik zie net zoveel Chinezen als Jan Cornelis. Mijn analyses zijn de combinatie van twee benaderingen: één de concrete ervaring van day-to-day onderhandelingen met China, diplomatiek en tussen bedrijven, en anderzijds een bredere focus, een academische analyse.”

Maar hoe zat dat nu met die Chinese vrouwen?

HOLSLAG: “Je voelt snel hoe dat werkt. Toen ik de eerste keer in China kwam, verbleef ik in een bescheiden hotelletje in de buurt van de universiteit. De volgende keer kwamen ze me met een chique Audi A4 ophalen aan de luchthaven en kreeg ik een beter hotel, aan de Shanghai Boulevard. De derde keer kreeg ik een heel leuke assistente om me bij te staan.

Je laat je heel snel meeslepen. Hoe vaker je komt, hoe meer toegang je krijgt – ik heb handjes geschud met verschillende vicepremiers, premiers en presidenten.”

CORNELIS: “Ik maak gelijkaardige dingen mee, maar ik geef daar een andere verklaring aan. Tijdens mijn eerste bezoeken in de jaren negentig verbleef ik ook in groezelige hotelletjes – er was niets anders – maar ik heb toen ook hechte samenwerkingsverbanden gesmeed.

Ook ik krijg vaak intelligente begeleidsters toegewezen. Als die ook bevallig zijn, dan heb ik daar niets op tegen.”

CHINA STANDS FOR OPPORTUNITIES Steffi Weil, director of the Brussels Academy of China and European Studies (BACES) and associate dean of Vesalius College I DON’T SEE CHINA’S economic strength and military power as a threat. The notion of one country challenging a hegemonic world order belongs to the past. In today’s multipolar world, a multitude of states and organisations shape international politics and trade. From this perspective, China’s foreign policies tell a different story: a China that is committed to taking responsibility for international security and contributing to economic stability.

China has shown on multiple occasions that it is rising peacefully.

For example, during his address to the UN General Assembly in September, Xi Jinping confirmed that China will establish a Peace Development Fund for the UN and implement an 8,000-troop standby peacekeeping force.

This shows that both China and the EU stand for democracy in international relations and are in favour of an enhanced role for the UN. Bilateral links between the EU and China are important and multifaceted.

As a result of growing interdependency, each has a vested interest in the other’s success, and I see China’s increasing investments in the EU as a sign of a maturing partnership from which both parties can benefit. Activities such as exports create jobs and capital inflows on both sides. There are great opportunities for bilateral trade, economic

and technological cooperation. The EU has a mature economy and advanced technology, while China offers economic growth, a great domestic market and a vast labour force.

Hopefully, a better political, economic and cultural understanding will lead to continued growth of China-EU relations.

Land in transitie CORNELIS: “We hebben met China een belangrijke samenwerking op cultuurvlak. De VUB heeft onder andere in de Central Academy of Fine Arts in Peking heel wat hedendaagse kunstenaars acceptabeler gemaakt voor de Chinezen. Daardoor ontstaat dialoog en wederzijds begrip. Als we daar wegblijven om een of andere abstracte ideologische redenering, dan doen we een venster dicht.”

Ai Weiwei, China’s bekendste kunstenaar, heeft ondertussen wel jaren vastgezeten.

CORNELIS: “Dat is niet goed te keuren, maar ik wil dit ook even relativeren. Ai Weiwei weet dit, als de engel van het Westen, goed te bespelen. Wat hem overkomt, is incompatibel met de grondslagen van een westerse democratie. De man zat regelmatig vast, maar we zijn hem wel gaan bezoeken. Hij zat niet in een gevangenis, maar in een luxehotel, zodat hij verder kon blijven werken.

Alleen was zijn bewegingsvrijheid beknot – wat ik uiteraard niet goedkeur.”

“China is geen westerse democratie, maar een land in transitie. Als je er een democratie naar westerse normen zou installeren, dan krijg je chaos, extreme armoede en een wereldramp. Dat sterke centrale gezag zou ik hier niet accepteren, maar je moet dat zien in een context van 1,3 miljard inwoners. Die lijden geen honger, ze hebben een dak boven het hoofd, ze hebben vervoer, ze gaan allen naar school. Waar in de wereld vind je zo’n grote populatie die dat allemaal heeft? Natuurlijk moeten de openheid en de vrijheid van meningsuiting vergroten – daar streven de Chinezen ook naar. Maar hebben we dan liever een situatie zoals in Rusland, waar de transitie heel bruusk is verlopen en allerlei maffia’s vrij spel kregen? Of iets als de Arabische Lente?

Wat hebben we daar teweeggebracht? Chaos, die in bepaalde gevallen zoals in Libië en Egypte veel erger is dan voorheen.”

Kunt u dat met uw Chinese contacten bespreken?

CORNELIS: “Absoluut. Wij nemen er aanstoot aan dat Chinezen Tiananmen, hét moment suprême van de blanke westerse beschaving, doodzwijgen. Ik keur niet goed wat daar gebeurd is, maar na Tiananmen is er wel een regime gekomen dat qua openheid naar de wereld enorme stappen heeft gezet. Wij hebben hier op de campus een beeld waarmee we de herinnering aan de revolte op Tiananmen gedenken, maar tegelijk kwam de Chinese vicepremier hier in 2015 een speech houden. De nummer drie van het Chinese regime. Op persoonlijk vlak kunnen we alles bespreken, zelfs met mensen van het regime.”

HOLSLAG: “Met de Chinezen kan je zeer lang praten, maar haalt het allemaal iets uit? Al zolang ik me bezighoud met China praten we over handel en over mensenrechten, maar om dan te denken dat je er vat op hebt? Vergeet het.”

CORNELIS: “Op een heel bescheiden schaal kan je wel aan een geleidelijke ommezwaai meewerken, door in de geesten nieuwe inzichten te zaaien.”

De stem van de academicus HOLSLAG: “Ik koester persoonlijk geen enkele aversie tegenover de Chinezen, maar ik word door de Vlamingen betaald om na te denken over wat de opkomst van een belangrijk land voor ons betekent. Dat jaagt me aan. De essentie voor mij is onze eigen samenleving meer zelfredzaam te maken. We zijn van Vlaanderen een schuldslaaf aan het maken. Elk jaar verarmt de Vlaamse samenleving voor meer dan 20 miljard, wat ons kwetsbaar maakt. Politici zijn zich niet altijd bewust van die evolutie. Daar hebben we als universiteit een rol te spelen. Als wij als academici al niet af en toe eens op een scherpe manier mogen interveniëren in het debat, wie gaat “Als academici niet het dan nog doen? Does China’s economic rise pose a threat, or does it offer new opportunities? Jan Cornelis and Jonathan Holslag will never agree on that. Cornelis, VUB’s vice-rector in charge of international policy, is an official friend of the People’s Republic, having received a Friendship Award for his pioneering work with Chinese universities.

Political scientist Holslag, on the other hand, offers two reasons to be apprehensive of China: the trade deficit and the country’s military capacity. He believes Belgian academics and business leaders are being naive when they share their knowledge too freely with the Chinese. Cornelis disagrees, and says Holslag is abusing his authority as an academic when he voices opinions about these subjects in the press. They also differ on the new VUB Confucius Institute. Holslag sees of a lack of balance in the partnership, while Cornelis celebrates the fact that the Chinese have agreed to the principle of independent research, something on which VUB prides itself.

CONFUCIUS: CONFUSION AND CONFLICT Jan Cornelis and Jonathan Holslag differ in their opinions of the Confucius Institute, which opened at VUB last year in the presence of the Belgian and Chinese prime ministers.

As vice-rector, Cornelis was the driving force behind the opening, while Holslag has explicitly distanced himself from it.

The Confucius Institute is roughly equivalent to the British Council or Germany’s Goethe Institut, promoting Chinese language and culture around the world. It is controversial, though, seen by some as a tool for propaganda and even spying for the People’s Republic of China. So why has one been set up at VUB? “The institute, financed by VUB and China, focuses on contemporary China, which VUB has always focused on,” Cornelis explains. “The institute houses our activities related to China: teaching methods, knowledge and technology transfer, political science, culture, economic diplomacy, international entrepreneurship… And the Chinese language, too, which we would like to offer as a module in the Department for Linguistics and Literature and hopefully as an option to all students.”

Holslag, though, has serious objections. “In Stockholm, a Confucius Institute was disbanded, because a leading university though it was inappropriate to have a state vehicle within the university community,” he says.

SHUXIAO KUANG, FIRST-YEAR PHD CANDIDATE AT VUB IN MY OPINION, the new Confucius Institute is a good thing, and VUB is the ideal place for it. Brussels needs this institute. China is an emerging power on the international stage and, as the capital of Europe, Brussels should be providing more and better opportunities to learn Chinese. It can only be beneficial for Sino-EU relations. But language training is not the institute’s only task.

It also specialises in cooperative research on contemporary China, which has always been VUB’s focus and area of expertise. Having said that, I completely understand people’s suspicions about the institute. The critical point is its governmental background, which always causes controversy. But it is up to people to make their own minds up after they have experienced more about Chinese culture.

alking up and down the stairs of the Stripmuseum. Ilse Smolders tells me that the building dates from 1903 and used to be a warehouse, the ‘Waucquez Warehouses’. She draws the attention to various decorative elements that she finds charming.

“Art nouveau is inspired by nature: flower and plant motifs recur frequently. That appeals to me, because I also love nature. The use of wrought iron you can observe here is fairly unique. Wrought iron isn’t only used as a functional element but it’s also on display.

This leads to another important feature: the light that is created! It was groundbreaking at that time – especially in private houses. It’s a world away from dark houses with small windows! There was a lot of emphasis on the division of space, the difference between floors, the huge glass screens and distinctive windows. A stairwell topped with a glazed cupola that could transform a house into an oasis of light.

Victor Horta was a master at creating a sense of space in a middle-class house – in those days it was unprecedented!”

“I find it critical that a house should be full of light. My own home has windows everywhere, from floor to ceiling. It’s just fantastic to have all that light coming in!”

“It’s a great shame that the Art Nouveau houses are so spread out across Brussels that you’d have trouble visiting them all in a day.

Even if you had the whole weekend, you’d still have to set a cracking pace to manage to see them all!

Sometimes we take our children in the car and drive around Brussels, enjoying all the beautiful Art Nouveau façades. In my wildest dreams for Brussels all these houses would be beside each other in an ‘Art

Nouveau district’. Imagine 150-160 beautiful houses, each a short walk from the other: we’d become an unbeatable city-trip destination!”

Ilse Smolders tells me that she also travels to other countries to seek out architecture from the same period. A trip to Porto and Aveiro in Portugal is marked on her calendar for this summer; also on the agenda is “the most beautiful bookshop in the world”, the Livraria Lello & Irmão. “Especially for my daughters, because they love books so much.”

So, does she also dream of living in an Art Nouveau house? A degree of hesitancy enters her voice. “The houses are, of course, appallingly expensive, and many are protected – so renovation would cost the earth.

To be honest, I don’t really know if I could live in a house like that, maybe it would quickly become too demanding. I live in a new-build with stark lines and huge windows.

After a busy day at work I come home to relax … so Art Nouveau is more of an inspiration.”

What popular science book do our professors recommend?

We asked Karen Sermon, professor in human and experimental genetics, embryology and developmental biology, to suggest a good book for the general reader in her field of expertise.

“I can’t think of anything specifically about my field, medical genetics. However, a series of four books written by three authors immediately comes to mind: fantasy author Terry Pratchett; Ian Stewart, a mathematician who has a few popular maths books to his name; and biologist Jack Cohen.

The books ingeniously blend a standalone fantasy story with easy-to-understand scientific explanations. The first book is about the origins of the universe

and the planets, and the origin and evolution of life on Earth.

The second book elaborates on the development of the human spirit, culture, language, art and science. The third book deals with the theory of evolution, which is also relevant to medical genetics, and the fourth book addresses the relationship between science and religion.”

Franky’s tree frog namesake Researchers at the Amphibian Evolution Lab, working with the universities of Delhi (India) and Peradeniya (Sri Lanka), have identified a previously overlooked yet distinct evolutionary lineage of tree frogs in northeast India. Ines Van Bocxlaer and SD Biju named the new genus Frankixalus in honour of their doctoral supervisor, Professor Franky Bossuyt.

Unesco honour for bioengineer Xenia Geeraerts, PhD student in bioengineering sciences, was awarded one of the three Belgian Unesco and L’Oréal Women in Science fellowships in 2015.

Engineers snap up prizes

The Web Intelligence Consortium awarded its 13th annual Outstanding Technology Award to Professor Francis Heylighen, director of the Evolution, Complexity and Cognition research group and founder of the Global Brain Institute. Heylighen and colleagues explore the connectivity between people, software and machines, developing models that can anticipate both its potential and pitfalls.

For the second year running, Thomson Reuters’ prestigious list of Highly Cited Researchers included Professor Luc De Vuyst, head of the Industrial Microbiology and Food Biotechnology research group.

Additionally, the journal Analytical Scientist identified professor and head of chemical engineering Gert Desmet as the 18th most influential person in the world of analytical sciences. Desmet (°1967) is the youngest scientist to make the top 20.

Every year, ie-net, the Flemish engineering association, awards prizes for the most deserving thesis projects from the previous academic year. In 2015, VUB engineers snared four of the 10 prizes, with bioengineers Edith Oyen and Margaux Leemans securing first and second prize respectively.

Sidney Goossens was third in the civil engineering category, while Audrey Cuvellier’s civil engineering research was selected by popular vote for the public choice award.

Solving a 65 million-year-old puzzle Postdoctoral researcher collects dinosaur fossils*

oen Stein (°1983) obtained a PhD in geology and palaeontology at the University of Bonn in Germany.

Today, he is an FWO postdoctoral fellow based at VUB and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences. Picturing what happened 65 million years ago remains a challenge. Did the dinosaurs die out gradually or was their extinction caused by a disastrous meteorite strike? In this endeavour, Stein braves raging Hungarian thunderstorms and sub-zero temperatures in far eastern Russia to visit dig sites and collect fossils of the large herbivores that roamed the region in the Cretaceous period. He aims to uncover migratory patterns, reconstruct growth speeds and investigate dietary habits. * with special thanks to wtnschp.be
