1. SHOP BRITISH
If you're renovating your bathroom, sourcing sanitaryware made in the UK – that doesn’t have to be shipped from abroad – is a great way to be more ecofriendly and cut down your carbon footprint.
Consider British brands such as Waters Baths of Asbourne (left), Britton Bathrooms, Crosswater and Burlington Bathrooms.
2. BIN THOSE BOTTLES
Swap toiletries in plastic bottles for more ecofriendly solid bars of shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body butter and face cleanser. New ethical skincare brand Fruu makes bars infused with ‘wonky’ fruits that would otherwise go to waste – they’re vegan-friendly, have recyclable packaging and each one lasts over 45 washes; from £7.99 for a shower block.

Tell us a little about what’s new at Harlequin… Our recently launched Colour 3 wallpaper and fabric collection was inspired by the ancient Silk Road trading route that stretches from China to Italy, and celebrates the colours, patterns and icons that combine as east meets west. Our online quiz is a great starting point to help customers discover which of our four looks – Reflect, Retreat, Rewild or Renew – represents their own interiors style. Is there a hero design? Like a map of the Silk Road, ‘Journey of Discovery’ is a beautiful handpainted storytelling piece, charting the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Tower of Babel through to geishas, goddesses and emperors, snow leopards, giant pandas and the mythical Chinese dragon. Where do you find inspiration? I always feel such a buzz after a trip to India. e light is amazing and the vibrancy of the saris, spices, flowers, and even the worn textures of murals painted on the walls are so special. Who’s your design hero?
Architect Frank Lloyd Wright is definitely one – I’m always inspired by architecture, and was blown away when I visited the Guggenheim Museum in New York. What’s next on your own decorating to-do list? e kitchen is my next big project, and I know exactly how I’d like it to look – I just need to find the right suppliers to turn my vision into reality.

Keep the warmth in with Blinds
W
hat has felt like the hottest summer is over, and autumn has arrived. But while the heat of the sun may have lessened, you don’t have to sacrifice the warmth in your home.
When the temperature drops, it’s increasingly important to feel cosy in our living spaces – and adding some autumn spice to your interiors is guaranteed to make spending time indoors a pleasure. is is the season of comfort food, from pumpkin lattes to cinnamon buns, and from these autumnal treats you’ll find a wealth of interior design inspiration. Adding these warming coffee tones and burnt orange shades will create a welcoming feel, and teamed with golden yellows and the brown-reds and rust tones of fallen leaves, help to unite your room scheme.
If you’re inspired by spicy mulled wines, autumn berries and evergreens, capture this at home with deep burgundy and pops of dark reds, contrasted with calming forest greens – and with winter around the corner, these tones will be the perfect backdrop for your Christmas decorations.
Whichever of these autumn palettes appeal, soft window furnishings such as curtains and Roman blinds are ideal for mixing these shades in patterns ranging from tartans to florals, or in plain blocks of colour. And for a complementary finishing touch, accessories such as cushions and lampshades in the same fabrics will add a stylish accent for a cohesive scheme.
What’s more, thermal linings on Roman blinds or curtains are available as a free upgrade from Blinds Direct, so whatever design you choose this autumn, you’ll have maximum cosiness guaranteed.

Using clever hacks and some savvy DIY, Laura Deller has revamped a sad 1970s house into a stylish family home

aura Deller admits that she called her now-home in Bedfordshire the ‘house of horrors’ when she and husband Chris first went to view it. ‘ e previous owners were animal breeders, so the whole house really smelled,’ she recalls. ‘ ere was dog hair stuck to the kitchen cabinets, and one of the bedrooms had a wall of tanks full of live lizards!’ e original 70s building had a conservatory extension with a leaking polycarbonate roof, and a garage that had been illegally converted without building regulations. A balcony had also been
added to the main bedroom, again without permission, so the couple were only able to buy the property on the understanding they take out indemnity insurance. But the house was bright and airy, had large rooms and felt like a great blank canvas – and the couple were up for the challenge. ‘We loved the plot and knew that long term we could make it into an amazing family home,’ says Laura.
e couple began a phased renovation, starting with replacing windows, adding new electrics and having the walls replastered in the bedrooms at the back of the house. ‘We wanted to get the

While this first phase was happening, the family slept together in the living room. ‘Looking back, I’m amazed we got it all done in one month, but creating a nice space for the children was the priority.’
Laura and Chris continued to sleep downstairs for the next few months, as

by this stage they had decided to re-jig the upstairs floor plan. ‘ ere was a dark, narrow corridor leading to a small fifth bedroom, with a window looking straight into the neighbours bedroom,’ explains Laura. ‘ e airing cupboard and water tank were both in the main bedroom so also needed relocating.’ So it was obvious to the couple that this fifth bedroom could be converted into a large en suite. ‘We drew out the layout on paper and used
The big idea
For a timber-clad look that doesn’t overpower the room, consider installing it on just the bottom half of a wall like Laura has. Most panelled options have a black background, but think about painting the wall in a on top to take it to another level
Living room
‘I was always set on a blue living room,’ says Laura, ’but as I accessorised more with wicker and fell in love with black paint and furniture, I went for Farrow & Ball’s Inchyra Blue, which has more green tones and complements my look better.’ Although the couple live in the country, Laura wanted a more contemporary feel for

To save money, the couple stripped everything out themselves, including the carpet and wallpaper. e builders then put the water tank into the loft, bricked up the window and reconfigured the landing, leaving them with the en suite installed and main bedroom
with a plastered finish, which the couple were more than happy to decorate themselves.
A break from all things reno was then initiated for a few months, but by the summer of 2020, having endured lockdown and spent way too long in the burgundy-carpeted living room, Laura decided enough was enough. ’As soon as tradespeople were allowed back inside, we had the room replastered, the old gas fire ripped out and a log burner installed,’ she says. ‘And then, finally, we got to pull up the ugly carpet, which revealed potentially gorgeous

Although it took three years to get to this point – longer than the couple expected – the wait actually worked in their favour, as it gave them plenty of time to see how they used the space, which in turn helped with the new

Instead, the couple decided to raise the roof and go as high as legally allowed for a single-story extension, to give it more air and light.
Laura used an online space planner to design the kitchen, as she knew exactly what she wanted for the scheme. ‘I wanted dark, Shaker-style units that showed the grain,
with lighter worktops to balance the look.’ e couple finally chose a Wren design but sourced the worktop separately. is final leg of the renovation went well, though the builders were installing the large garden doors during storm Eunice, which Laura admits was a bit hairy. And although the whole family caught Covid just as the build was completed, so the big reveal for family and friends was delayed, Laura says the finished result is everything she dreamed of. ‘I really wouldn’t change a thing.’

Emma designed the ‘hidden’ kitchen herself, which features a stunning brass island inspired by a vintage bar counter. hen Emma Allen and Mark Opie envisaged the transformation of their family home, they felt there was only one way to go. ‘With its high ceilings and elegant proportions, we knew that the house demanded something bold and dramatic,’ explains Emma. ‘We wanted to maintain its feel and remain sympathetic to its roots, while creating something that combined classic and contemporary.’
From the outside, this is a typically handsome early Edwardian villa; inside, it is anything but typical. Alongside panelled doors, sash windows,
plaster mouldings and period fireplaces are daring colours and patterns, intriguing textures and materials, statement artworks and the clean, sculptural lines of furniture and light fittings that are both modern and vintage. As well as dramatic, the interiors scheme was also designed to be comfortable and practical for everyday family life.
Emma and Mark, who have run gallery and picture-framing business Eat Art in nearby Falmouth for more than 20 years, were not actually looking to move house when they came across pictures of the property for sale. However, they were so convinced of its potential that they put in

For eight months, Emma and the couple’s daughters Eve and Olivia lived with Mark’s mother in nearby Falmouth, while he camped out on site and carried out much of the building work. e total renovation included a new roof and chimneys, plumbing, electrics, insulation and underfloor heating, with the couple also knocking two rooms together to create a family living/dining space, relocating the bathroom, and replacing all the flooring that couldn’t be saved. ‘Once we were able to move back in, we did the rest of the work as time and funds allowed,’

So we decided on black for the hall and living room, because going dark and dramatic was something we had always wanted to do – but we also kept a lighter family room that’s a bit more “friendly”. And as we’re considering expanding our business into interior design, we also wanted the house to showcase our aesthetic as a backdrop for possible events, exhibitions and photo shoots.’
One of the most striking features of the house is the ‘hidden’ kitchen, which Emma designed because she
wanted it to be functional and modern, but feel like a traditional room when the panelled doors are shut. e brass island unit was modelled on a vintage bar counter the couple once came across in a junk shop. By doing much of the building work themselves, and scouring antiques and charity shops for unique finds, Emma and Mark have created a high-end look on a budget. ‘Most things in the house are secondhand or found on Ebay,’ says Emma. ‘We really love sourcing things from charity shops, antiques shops and online. We also want to improve the garden, where we keep our ten chickens. But whatever may change, coming through the front door feels warm and welcoming. is is our sanctuary. ‘I couldn’t let this opportunity pass’
With so few doer-uppers on the market in the area, this Edwardian house was the perfect project for Pip Jenkins to put her own stamp on

For a relaxed space in keeping with the period, Pip opted for a mix of units and freestanding storage by The Olive Branch Kitchens, painted in Little Greene’s Dock Blue and complemented by pink scalloped wall tiles

ip Jenkins has history when it comes to house moves, but even she was wasn’t sure if she should tackle what would be a major 16-month renovation and extension. ‘We had already renovated a few properties, but after three house moves and two pregnancies in three years, I thought I was settled and over it at last, especially with now having two young children in tow,’ recalls Pip. ‘My husband, however, apparently wasn’t, and when he spotted this Edwardian semi on the market it was time to pack up – again!’ But when Pip saw it for herself, she admits she was just as enthusiastic as him.
‘It was right at the heart of an area we loved, thanks to its great links to the City and super schools,’ she explains. ‘So because there were fewer and fewer doeruppers left in this part of North London, we just couldn’t turn our backs on it.’
However, the house as it is today took some years to achieve, and despite the fact that it was far from perfect when the family got the keys in 2012, they had to make the best of it for a while. ‘We were renovating other properties at the time, which needed a lot of work, so they had to take precedence,’ says Pip. ‘ e result was that we lived here for the best part of six years, just doing what we could,

while concentrating on the other houses. I called it our “posh camping” period!’
Once the work did start, however, Pip meant business. ‘We’d only done the basics that were required to make the place comfortable when we moved in, as it was pretty grotty in places, but this was now demolition time – everything was going, and the place was to be gutted,’ she explains. ‘It’s a big enough house though, so we were able to de-camp onto the top two floors,
complete with a temporary kitchen that the builders rigged up for us, as the lower levels were completed.’
e other benefit of having lived in the property so long before starting the build was that the couple knew exactly what they were after. ‘We’d figured out how the house “worked”, which rooms were sunny and which were the duller spaces, and that’s so important,’ says Pip, who chose their builder by recommendation.

‘We were very hands-on with the design of the single-storey extension at the back, but used an architect friend, Amber Short of AS Design, to ensure our drawings would be accepted by planners,’ adds Pip, who also project managed the work, working from home on what was at times a building site. e house was then completely gutted – basement to attic –taken back to board, re-wired and re-plumbed
with four new bathrooms fitted, new windows, a new roof and flooring added, ‘with all the consequent upheaval that brings,’ says Pip. ‘We then knocked a large opening from the original dining room at the back and extended out, excavating the garden in the process. We had so much space there we could afford to lose a fair chunk and not really miss it.’
Despite the sheer scale of the project, it went surprisingly smoothly

Chic storage
A repurposed shop unit that Pip found at The Old Cinema is the perfect piece for the hallway, providing handy drawers for keys, post and outdoor accessories
according to Pip, although she believes that a lot of that was due to her previous experience renovating properties to sell on. ‘ ankfully everything went without a hitch – from the planning right through the build – but one of the biggest challenges was probably keeping an eye on the budget,’ she explains. ‘With not having that much financial wiggle room, I’ve turned haggling into an art form. If you can buy in bulk it helps with deals, too – for example, we bought the four bathroom suites together and saved there. And because we’ve done up other houses, we’ve built good relationships with suppliers over the years, and I also source pre-loved items where I can.’
With a project this size it would have been easy to get carried away, but the budget balanced itself out in the end, says Pip. ‘If something cost a bit more than expected, we just had to make savings elsewhere, and we achieved that without too much compromise. e hardest part was being patient, as we were so keen to see how all our plans on paper would actually transfer into our home.’

When it came to the interiors, Pip is a huge fan of the classic Mid-century look, and doesn’t mind how much time she spends sourcing just the right piece at the right price.
‘Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’m quite thrifty and love a bargain – if it’s secondhand, discounted or in a sale I’ll be in there!’ she admits. ‘One of my favourite buys are the 1950s opaline bathroom lights, which were a bargain from
Ebay.’ Pip also loves colour, pattern and shape too, as well as ‘big, bold art and pieces with a bit of impact, which is needed for rooms of this size.’ But will this be her family’s last move?
‘With the knowledge I now have, I compare renovating a house to childbirth,’ says Pip. ‘While you’re going through it, you think “never again!” But we’re so happy with the result that you never know – we just might.’

ï 1 leek, trimmed & cut into 2cm slices
ï 300g mushrooms, sliced
ï 2 sprigs of rosemary, leaves picked
ï plus extra for dusting
ï 100ml white wine
ï 250ml chicken stock
1 tbsp crème fraîche
150g Stilton, cut into chunks
500g cooked chicken, torn into bite-size pieces
500g puff pastry, shop-bought or homemade
Milk, for glazing the pastry
Sea salt & freshly ground black pepper
Red cabbage, peas or other vegetables of your choice, to serve
Beer-roasted pork shoulder with apricots
is pie is packed with flavour: Stilton is the queen here, delivering a bold, salty tanginess to the leeks, mushrooms and chicken...
1. Preheat a fan oven to 180°C (400°F/Gas mark 6). Bring a saucepan of water to the boil and cook the potatoes for 5–7 mins until par-boiled. Drain and set aside.
2. Melt the butter in a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan with a lid. Add the potatoes, stir and cover with the lid to cook for10 mins. Add the leek, mushrooms, rosemary and a good grind of black pepper, stir, cover again and cook for a further 10 mins. Add the flour and stir well, letting it bubble for a moment until all the liquid has cooked off and everything holds together.
3. Pour in the wine, stir and bring to the boil, then add the chicken stock and let it simmer for a few minutes before adding the crème fraîche and the Stilton. Once the cheese has melted, add the chicken, stir again, then pour everything into a deep 30cm pie dish.
4. On a lightly floured surface, roll the pastry out into a round about 3mm thick. Carefully lay this over the top of the pie dish, using a sharp knife to trim off any overhang. You can use these extras to create little leaves or shapes to go on top if you wish. Make a couple of pricks with a sharp knife all the way through the pastry near the centre of the pie and brush the top of the pastry with a little milk.
5. Bake for 35 mins, until the pastry is brown and puffed up. Serve with the veg of your choice – red cabbage and peas are both delicious with this.
SERVES 4
1.2kg boneless pork shoulder
500ml golden ale or light beer
3 tbsp runny honey
1 star anise
3 bay leaves
3–4 apricots, stoned & halved
Sea salt
Roast potatoes & green vegetables, to serve
I first had pork roasted in beer on a trip to Germany many years ago, and there’s something about the hoppy beer cutting through the pork fat that makes a deliciously silky sauce. e addition of star anise and apricots creates a fragrant, sweet flavour...
Score the skin of the pork and put it into a highsided roasting dish – you want it to fit snugly, or the beer will just bubble away. Salt the skin liberally, pour the beer around the sides, and add the honey, star anise and bay leaves over the skin. Cover with foil and leave to marinate in the fridge overnight.
2. Take out an hour before you plan to cook, then preheat a fan oven to 180°C (400°F/Gas mark 6). Add the apricots around the pork and cook for 30 mins, then cover with foil and cook for a further 30 mins.
3. Remove from the oven and transfer the pork and apricots to a cutting board to rest, then increase the oven heat to 220°C (475°F/Gas mark 9). Remove the skin and put it on a baking sheet, then cook for 15 mins to crackle up while the meat rests. Meanwhile, ladle some of the cooking juices into a small pan and bring to the boil, cooking until it’s reduced to a syrupy consistency.
4. Slice the pork and crackling and serve with the apricots, roast potatoes and green vegetables, with a drizzle of the reduced sauce over the meat.

1. First, make the pastry by blitzing the flour, sugar and butter on high speed in a food processor, until the mixture is a fine, sandy texture. Add the egg and salt and pulse until the pastry starts to come together. Tip out onto a lightly floured surface, bringing into a soft, pliable dough. Wrap in cling film and refrigerate for 20 mins.
2. Once chilled, roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface into a 25cm circle, then carefully transfer to a 20cm tart tin and press it in, cutting away the excess pastry but leaving a little overhang. Prick the base with a fork and return to the fridge for a further 10 mins.
3. Preheat a fan oven to 180°C (400°F/Gas mark 6), then line the pastry case with baking parchment and fill with baking beans or uncooked rice. Bake for 10 mins before removing the baking beans
and baking for a further 4 mins until just cooked, but still very light in colour. Allow to cool, then trim any excess pastry.
4. Meanwhile, make the filling, lightly whisking together the egg, cream and elderflower cordial in a large jug. Sprinkle in the sugar and vanilla extract and whisk once more to combine. Gently mix through the gooseberries, pour the filling
into the pastry case, then place in the oven, immediately turning down to 160°C (350°F/ Gas mark 4). Bake for 25–30 mins until the custard has just set but still has a wobble.
5. Once baked, turn off the oven and open the door, but allow the tart to cool in the oven – this will help prevent cracking. When cool, slice and serve with a generous dollop of whipped cream.

WHY DIDN’T YOU LIKE YOUR OLD KITCHEN?
When we bought our home in east London, it was a small, two-up two-down Victorian cottage. e kitchen was tiny and dark, with the main bathroom and stairs to the rooms upstairs leading off it. e house was charming, full of character and perfect for our needs at the time, but when we discovered we were expecting our daughter in 2019, we realised we would either have to move or make it bigger.
HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT DESIGNING THE NEW LAYOUT?
We contacted local firm ROAR Architects to reconfigure the space. e walls between the kitchen and bathroom were knocked through, then the back extended by 2.5m and squared off with the garden, to give us a much bigger kitchen-diner. Reversing the direction of the stairs to create a hallway and upstairs landing also freed up room for a comfy sofa, a hidden utility area and a downstairs toilet.

WHAT WERE YOUR MUST-HAVE FEATURES?
We wanted well-made bespoke wooden cabinetry, and to fill the space with as much natural light as possible. A huge feature skylight was fitted in the ceiling, and industrial-style French doors installed at the back, which almost span the width of the house.
DID YOU HAVE A STRICT BUDGET FOR THE KITCHEN?
As it was part of a whole-house renovation, we had to be really careful not to overspend, so had £12,000 put
by to also include fitting costs. Staying within that amount was challenging; inevitably things always end up costing more, but by cutting costs in some areas, we just about did it. e cabinetry was brilliant value for money, and the quartz worktop was cheaper and more practical than marble. We ended up choosing less expensive timber floorboards, and making the cupboards for our utility area from V-Grooved MDF.

RobMATT-BLACK MARVEL

TOWER LIVING
PERFECTPOSITION
When Rob Hunt began his search for a new home, he was looking for something different. So upon finding a water tower for sale 20 miles from where he was living, he saw an opportunity. ‘ ere were ideas popping in my head as soon as I saw it,’ Rob recalls, ‘and I knew I wanted a statement matt-black kitchen, which is rare.’
Discovering that Wren were the only company offering the colour, Rob decided on the Infinity Plus Ultra Nero Satin kitchen. ‘People thought having a black kitchen wouldn’t be practical,’ he explains. ‘However, Wren’s anti-fingertip material keeps it looking sleek.’ e challenging circular shape of the water tower meant that Wren had to assign kitchen design director Darren Watts to help make Rob’s dream a reality. ‘Because the space wasn’t square, it was very difficult to design the layout,’ Rob says. ‘Especially with the details needed to make it functional.’
Darren took Rob’s sketches and helped him evolve them into a symmetrical layout that complements the water tower’s shape, even collaborating during lockdown and keeping in touch via video call. ‘I was living on-site in a portable home at the time, but we were still able to connect,’ explains Rob.
Despite the challenges, Darren designed a kitchen that perfectly suits Rob’s needs using top-of-the-range AEG appliances, which even have WiFi. Rob initially planned to have two ovens, but the addition of a 10-seater dining table meant the design had to adapt. So Darren added two AEG SteamCrisp with Pyrolytic cleaning ovens with an additional compact one for more cooking space. And to help Rob comfortably cater for guests at his frequent dinner parties, the kitchen features an AEG Double Combo hob for frying and sautéing, plus a warming drawer for baking or slow cooking.
An AEG integrated frost-free fridge and freezer fits in perfectly with the aesthetic and gives Rob plenty of storage, while an AEG fully integrated dishwasher and 4-in-1 InSinkErator tap were added to make hosting a breeze.
Rob’s love of entertaining influenced not just the choice of appliances but also their layout, with the hob’s position facing out onto the kitchen, meaning he can always be part of the conversation when cooking.
Rob now has a stunning kitchen that fits in with the rest of his incredible home. ‘ e main focus was filling a vast space,’ he says. ‘I didn’t want the kitchen to get lost but rather stand out, and Wren helped me achieve my vision.’

‘A BOUTIQUE HOTELWAS OUR DESIGN INSPIRATION’
Natalie Cosgrove has recreated a Soho House vibe for her new Victorian-style bathroom scheme
WHAT WAS WRONG WITH YOUR ORIGINAL BATHROOM?
It was functional, but it wasn’t at all practical. e shower space was huge but it had been installed shoddily, which meant there was an overflow issue. It had been tiled in black, so it didn’t feel cosy, plus there wasn’t a bath, which didn’t seem right for a five-bedroom property. I painted the walls a deep red to add some warmth, but we knew we could do more with it – the room was so vast and there was potential for a large tub. With a baby on the way, it was time to make a change, and we wanted something that better suited our lifestyle.
DID YOU HAVE ANY BIG IDEAS FOR THE DESIGN?
We wanted to bring fun and character to the house while also reverting to the era and tradition, as it was built in 1855. We stayed at Soho House in Berlin a few years ago and the bathrooms there are stunning, which gave us our starting point – that Victorian public convenience vibe with dark tiles… I also knew I wanted a black bath – something that we could sink into after a long day.
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACED?
I met Liz, our interior designer from

Wolfe Interiors, on an Instagram course. We got chatting and I quickly realised she was the missing link that would help to progress the house renovations. She has a knack of being able to take my ramblings and turn them into beautiful designs. Our biggest issue was simply getting tradespeople in during the pandemic, but we somehow managed it. I was heavily pregnant when the project was happening
and at one point I was certain we’d be washing the baby in the kitchen sink!
HOW DID YOU MAKE THE BUDGET WORK FOR YOU?
One of the initial issues was the rates decent tradespeople wanted to charge, but we were fortunate to be able to find good-quality items at reasonable prices. I did have a habit of

picking high-end items, then Liz had to go away and find something similar in our budget. We did look to make savings on certain items, which I regret now. My advice would be to buy a more expensive toilet, as cheap ones are not worth any savings you may make.
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE RESULT, NOW IT’S FINISHED?
I’m delighted. It’s such a stunning space and I love the wallpaper. It’s super functional, but it’s quirky and pretty, too.
WOULD YOU DO ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY?
e only issue we have relates to the shower; we need to downsize the head as it tends to splash out of the enclosure. I am not sure I would want a shower door, as I much prefer the open spaces. And therein lies the issue – in order to get the aesthetic of the room, we just have to have less powerful showers. In the grand scheme of things though, I’m not sure I would do it differently at all.

A TEAM EFFORT
Having already lived in his Victorian terrace for 12 years, George Cotter had the funds for an extension and renovation project but wasn’t sure where to begin until his partner Kristie Malivindi moved in. ‘I relocated from New York in 2018, and the chance to renovate a house was a dream come true,’ she recalls. After admiring a completed project by Rise Design Studio, the couple talked through their plans with one of the architecture practice’s directors, Sean Ronnie Hill, deciding to replace one of the three bedrooms with an en suite, including room for a washing machine and dryer, ‘although it took some persuading,’ admits George. But converting the loft ensured they kept the same number of bedrooms.
ECO-FRIENDLY ELEMENTS
With the help of sustainability consultant Next Step Heating, the architects devised improvements that included re-insulating the house, fitting double-glazed windows, installing solar panels and a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system. With planning permission granted for an extension and the loft conversion, George and Kristie rented nearby while the build got underway, but just a few months in, the first lockdown happened. ‘ e builder had already taken the roof off, erected the scaffolding and

demolished the back wall of the house,’ recalls George. ‘So our home was pretty exposed, and there was no going back.’
Fortunately, the contractor foresaw the supply chain problems and had stockpiled materials in advance, and the couple used this period to research fixtures and fittings.
As is often the case with an older building, unexpected problems came to light. ‘Upon pulling up the floors, we realised the joists wouldn’t be strong enough to support the new flooring, so they had to be replaced,’ George explains. ‘We then discovered that a fire had taken hold in the loft at some point, so we also had to replace some of the damaged timber beams,’ says Kristie.
FLEXIBLE LIVING
As many of the period features had previously been stripped out, George and Kristie opted for contemporary interiors.
‘We kept to clean lines rather than reinstating elaborate details,’ she says – and this pared-back approach is evident in the streamlined extension. ‘We spend time together in the kitchen while George cooks, and the space works just as well when family come over,’ says Kristie. e open-plan room is also where Kristie works from home, while George uses the new loft bedroom as an office. ‘Working with a team of specialists means we’ve created something far more interesting than we would have done on our own.’
