Dominican friars. Beginning in Belgium and the Low Countries, the movement spread along the Rhine, with its numbers peaking at the end of the thirteenth century. In the end their lack of formal ecclesial definition and establishment would bring suspicion, charges of heresy and lead to their decline. The artist remarked that “ever since the spectacle of the 2004 political conventions, I’ve been fascinated by complex, dramatic American imagery. I made the commitment to spend a large portion of my time photographing ‘painterly’ images to use as a basis for my artwork.” In compiling images he noted that a common theme throughout all of the work is the American pursuit for more; not just for more material objects but also more intangible things like excitement, power, happiness, and companionship. In "Great Expectation," Roche gives his perspective on what it means to start and expand a family relatively late in life. Through a series of diary entries - by turns humorous, angstridden and full of hope and joy - Roche describes his thoughts and concerns during the nine months of his wife's pregnancy. With five years of parenting his irrepressible daughter Maeve under his belt, Roche, already 45 years old, and his wife, Maura, face the prospect of another arrival and the myriad of emotions that come with a second child. From reveling in the joys of pregnancy, such as Maura's delight at "having cleavage" and being able to eat whatever she desires, to assuaging the parental anxieties of choosing the right obstetrician, correcting the mistakes one made with the first child and sending children to college in the future, Roche records his emotions with candidness and intimacy. Jason Avant, founder and managing editor of DadCentric.com, wrote: "Dan Roche has perfectly captured the unique joys and heartaches of being a second-time dad. Serious without being somber, reflective but not sentimental, and with an ever-present dry wit, 'Great Expectation' is a must-read for new and veteran dads alike." And Elizabeth Stuckey-French, author of "Mermaids on the Moon," reported: "I loved spending time with Dan Roche and his family -- and what an important time it was as they faced life and death with courage, humor and grace. He takes us right into their house -- the kitchen, bedrooms and backyard -- to remind us again of the importance of each day we are given. His prose is as beautiful as it is efficient. Now we have a father who has written, as Anne Lamott did in 'Operating Instructions' and Louise Erdrich in 'The Blue Jay's Dance,' about the coming of a child. Mothers and children but especially fathers will thank him."
Roche is an assistant professor in the English department at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. He is also the author of "Love's Labors: A Memoir of Marriage and Divorce," and his essays have appeared in the North American Review, Under the Sun, and the Journal. He holds a master's degree and a doctorate from the UI. "Great Expectation" is part of the UI Press Sightline series of literary nonfiction. "GREAT EXPECTATION" WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR SALE AT BOOKSTORES OR DIRECTLY FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA PRESS BY PHONE AT 1-800621-2736 OR ONLINE AT WWW.UIOWAPRESS.ORG.

PLAYING FOR PIZZA Paperback Mass-market Fiction by John Grisham (paperback)
Rick Dockery was the third-string quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. In the AFC Championship game against Denver, to the surprise and dismay of virtually everyone, Rick actually got into the game. With a 17-point lead and just minutes to go, Rick provided what was arguably the worst single performance in the history of the NFL. Overnight, he became a national laughingstock and, of course, was immediately cut by the Browns and shunned by all other teams. Synopsis: But all Rick knows is football, and he insists that his agent, Arnie, find a team that needs him. Against enormous odds Arnie finally locates just such a team and informs Rick that, miraculously, he can in fact now be a starting quarterback–for the mighty Panthers of Parma, Italy. Yes, Italians do play American football, to one degree or another, and the Parma Panthers desperately want a former NFL player–any former NFL player–at their helm. So Rick reluctantly agrees to play for
When you think John Grisham, you usually think of legal thrillers, right? Well, that and the term 'airplane reading', but you probably don't think pastoral sports stories (I know I don't). The Hollywood Reporter announced that Phoenix Pictures has purchased the rights to Grisham's 2007 novel, Playing for Pizza, and the company is already on the hunt for a writer and director for the sports dramedy. Pizza centers on a third string quarterback for the Cleveland Browns named Rick Docker. After blowing his team's championship shot, Rick is dropped from the team and blacklisted from the NFL. Luckily for him, his enterprising agent finds him a spot in the Italian football league playing for the Parma Panthers. From then on the story is probably a compendium of 'fish out of water jokes', and general cultural misunderstanding I'm thinking something along the lines of Under the Tuscan Sun, but with a lot more tackling. I can't help but remembering back to the 90's when it seemed like you couldn't turn around without seeing another one of Grisham's legal dramas go into production. But, as audiences (and the quality of the movies) sagged, it seemed like his moment in the sun had passed. Now that George Clooney's Smokehouse has picked up the screen rights to Grisham's non-fiction novel, The Innocent Man: Murder and Injustice in a Small Town with David Gordon Green set to direct, there may just be a second chance for Grisham on the big screen after all although it's going to be awfully tough to live down the reputation of being the man responsible for Christmas with The Kranks.

the VIDEO GAMING INDUSTRY might be fun and games to most, BUT THIS MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS is playing to win. 10 VUE : : ISSUE 152
THE VIDEO GAMING INDUSTRY HAS COME A LONG WAY... While most American kids do play video games and will be returning back to school soon, the video game industry is metal gearing up for a very profitable 2008. While the summer months can drag the industry down just slightly due to busy activities, vacations and warm weather, the fall and winter months will turn on the afterburners for this multi-billion dollar business. ideo games are not just for kids anymore. If you find yourselves playing Solitaire, Hearts, Minesweeper, Free Cell or Chess on your home-computer, you are part of the fast-growing video game industry. The video game market has shifted older as the first generation of gamers continues to play into adulthood. Already 62 percent of the console market and 66 percent of the PC market is age 18 or older. The game industry caters to adult tastes but also targets young teens and kids. Meanwhile, a sizable number of parents ignore game ratings because they assume that games are for “kids. One quarter of children ages 11 to 16 identify an M-Rated (Mature Content) game as among their favorites. Clearly, more should be done to restrict advertising and marketing that targets young consumers with mature content, and to educate parents about the media choices they are facing. But parents need to share some of the responsibility for making decisions about what is appropriate for their children. The news on this front is not all bad. The Federal Trade Commission has found that 83 percent of game purchases for underage consumers are made by parents or by parents and children together. Starting with the simple Pong game three decades ago and evolving into lavishly drawn interactive epics, the scale of games and the size of their audience has grown exponentially, with sales in the billions of dollars and major multinational corporations clamoring for a piece of the action. Historically, the video game market has been predominantly male. However, the percentage of women playing games has steadily increased over the past decade. Women now slightly outnumber men playing Web-based games. Spurred by the belief that games were an important gateway into other kinds of digital literacy, efforts were made in the mid-90s to build games that appealed to girls. More recent games such as The Sims were huge crossover successes that attracted many women who had never played games before. Given the historic imbalance in the game market (and among people working inside the game industry), the presence of sexist stereotyping in games is hardly surprising. Yet it's also important to note that female game characters are often portrayed as powerful and independent The gaming industry took in $18.85 billion during 2007, a figure that trumps the $16 billion in DVD sales earned by the movie industry in that same year. While this was the first year that
VIDEO GAMES TO FILM What are some qualities that make a successful movie based on a video game? Q&A With Abbie Heppe - Entertainment Editor, "Tips & Tricks" magazine A lot of times video games have a very rapid fan base, and trying to appease fans of the game by including throws to the game can be very difficult. In order to make it successful, a lot of times you have to appeal to another genre outside the video game fan base. For example, "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" was for action movie fans as well, and "Silent Hill" was for horror movie fans as well. To make it successful, you have to go outside just the game's fan base. WHAT ARE SOME QUALITIES THAT MAKE A SUCCESSFUL VIDEO GAME BASED ON A MOVIE? There were some problems in the beginning with making successful video games out of movies, especially when movie companies first started putting games to come out with their movies, in that a lot of times they wouldn't leave enough money left for the game budgets, and so had these not so good games coming out based on movies. The trick is to keep in mind that it is a game and to make it fun. Some of the most successful games that are based on movies add something extra to it. You're going to take us to a plot in movie that we didn't see on screen, the back story, or something that came after. For example, "The Chronicles of Riddick" took us outside the story of the movie and that partially made it the success that it was. It was a great game. You have to keep in mind that people don't necessarily want to play a game straight through the movie.
one of the better ones in the genre. It incorporates some great elements of the game, but it's still its own movie and it's beautiful. I also think that 'Silent Hill' had the look right. I think that other movies have captured the look or captured just one part of the game, but haven't actually been able to make that game into a really great movie. I think Final Fantasy Advent Children probably did it the best. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WORST MOVIES BASED ON VIDEO GAMES? I think if you're going to mention the worst movies based on video games, Uwe Boll's name has to come up. I think the positive thing is that his movies actually seem to be getting slightly better as they go along, but Alone in the Dark and Blood Reign were just atrocious. I think people forget, too, that Super Mario Brothers really wasn't that great and a lot of the earlier video game movies weren't that great, but his movies have been staggeringly bad. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST VIDEO GAMES BASED ON MOVIES? Some of the best video games have been based on movies. GoldenEye for the N64 was amazing if not just for the multi-player. You also had a lot of the games that were based on the Disney movies like Aladdin and Toy Story. Those were actually really great games and I also personally liked Lego Star Wars I. I liked the first one, and even though I didn't like the movies more, I liked the first game more than I liked the second game.
WHAT ARE SOME INFLUENTIAL MOVIES BASED ON VIDEO GAMES? You have some of the earlier movies, I mean, everybody WILL THE VIDEO GAME AND MOVIE INDUSTRIES had seen the 'Super Mario Bros.' movie when it came out, CONTINUE TO BE INTERTWINED? because Super Mario Brothers was such a big game. Absolutely. You're already seeing a push towards photo However, in terms of influential movies, there haven't realism on consoles, and having the graphics just be been as many. I think 'Silent Hill' was influential in amazing; I think on par sometimes with what you see in showing that you can bring a mainstream audience to movies. We give Academy awards for special effects, video game movies, but at the same time that is and I'm seeing the same kind of cinematics and the something that a lot of other movies have failed to do. I same kind of graphics coming into games, and consoles FINALif FANTASY: The Spirits (July 13, think you're going to look at theWithin successful ones, then2001) being developed to have the best graphics possible. I 'Lara Croft'. Also, 'Mortal Combat' was pretty successful; it think the movie industry takes note, and I think the game brought the kind of martial arts genre into it. It helps to be industry also watches what the movie industry does, and able to get people who don't just play the games to see it. there's a lot of cross-over now; actors taking roles in video games, directors wanting to direct video games WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST MOVIES BASED ON (like John Woo doing Stranglehold), and cross-over VIDEO GAMES? between games being made into films. A lot of game I think 'Final Fantasy: Advent Children' was a huge step in directors that direct games like their movies. I think that video movies. It is animated, or computer graphically we're going to continue to see the two converge over the animated; it's not live action. However, I think that it's really next few years, and farther in the future. READ ENTIRE MOVIE LIST at vueonline.com
gaming has eclipsed DVD sales, the industry continues a trend of topping movie theater revenues ($9.6 billion in 2007-8). A report conducted by consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers claims that game sales are far from peaking, reports Reuters. Sales will reach $68.3 billion worldwide by 2012, an annual growth rate of 10.3 percent, according to the study. The firm also claims that the "online and wireless games" sectors will see the most growth, leaping from $6.6 billion and $5.6 billion to $14.4 billion and $13.5 billion, respectively. Console games, the largest category, will grow by 6.9 percent annually, from $24.9 billion last year to $34.7 billion in 2012. As of the end of 2007 in the U.S., there was an installed base of 9 million Xbox 360 consoles, which Microsoft launched in November 2005. That was followed in the next-generation category by 7 million for Nintendo's Wii and 3 million for PlayStation 3, both of which were introduced in November 2006. WILL VIDEO GAMES SAVE THE MUSIC INDUSTRY? A composer named Nobuo Uematsu joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a single performance of his most famous work. The show sold out in three days. In fact, there was almost a riot at the box office when people couldn't get tickets. What was the music? Uematsu's soundtrack for the popular video game Final Fantasy. The relationship between games and music is only getting peachier: this past June, Activision released a Guitar Hero game dedicated to Aerosmith and "celebrated artists that the band has either performed with or has been inspired by in some way." Clearly, bands are taking notice of gaming's reach and influence. Here's a look at the past, present and future of the mutually beneficial relationship between music and games. One of the standout events in the merger between games and popular music came when Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame scored iD's seminal shooter, Quake. Worlds collided, as music fans who'd never looked twice at gaming suddenly took interest in online fragfests. Ironically, Reznor has since become a staunch opponent of the music industry's old guard, going so far as to leak his own tracks and remixes. OLD SONGS-YOUNG AUDIENCES Where new audiences might once have been introduced to classic tunes through movies (think Martin Scorsese and his love for The Rolling Stones, or Wes Anderson's faithful use of The Kinks), now new generations get their musical education from games. Rockstar lived up to their name and built radio stations right into the Grand Theft Auto series that cemented gamers' love for tracks like Ice Cube's 'It Was A Good Day' and introduced many to stuff like Gary Numan's 'Cars'. Dueling arena-rocking franchises Rock Band and Guitar Hero have only amped up that trend by going far beyond the niche track selections of older rhythm games. While labels struggle to sell CDs, Rock Band has already pushed well over 2 million songs. That sales market developed overnight; Rock Band has only been in stores for a few months. But it's consistent with the music industry's current trend towards single-track downloads, which have been increasing weekly. 11 VUE : : ISSUE 152

Earth To the Dandy Warhols AUGUST 19.08
Digital Release
The band marches to there own drummer
Brian Eno and I recently finished our first collaboration in about 30 years said Byrne. For the most part, Brian did the music and I wrote some tunes, words and sang. It's familiar but completely new as well. We're pretty excited. In August the music will be available via this Web site, free for streaming and it will also be available for purchase as both a download and in physical formats. One of the songs will be available free of charge.
Now acting as masters of their own destiny, The Dandy Warhols are back and ushering in a rockin return to form with Earth to the Dandy Warhols, the band s debut on their newly minted label, Beat The World Records. The album is quintessential Dandys, pulling together the diverse sounds and influences that have always characterized their music, and full of the same dry vigor that s made them world famous.

DELUXE FAN EDITION
COUNTRY CHARTS FROM THE ARTIST:: "We've been playing some of the new songs during our live shows," says lead singer Jennifer Nettles. "The fans have been so responsive. We couldn't wait to get the whole album to them. I am more excited about this album than any other that I've recorded thus far," continued Nettles. "It is special to us and has a lot of emotion, heart, laughter, tears and love on the inside!"
"Love On The Inside is just that...it is a recording full of love," Kristian Bush says. "It's in the strings and wood of the instruments, in the vocal chords, in the hearts that beat behind them and in the words that flood out through them into microphones. Our hope is that new Sugarland fans and old ones alike will hear this album and feel like the soundtrack to their life is magically playing in front of them." When Sugarland released their third album Love On The Inside on July 22 it was all about the fans. Lead members Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush wanted to deliver more than the average album to their loyal supporters. Together they created a Deluxe Fan Edition that will include 17 tracks (12 regular and 5 bonus) in special packaging with an expanded CD booklet, as well as access to download exclusive music video and "behind the scenes making of the album" footage.

KATY PERRY ONE OF THE BOYS POP CHARTS
This isn't the first time that the singer-songwriter Katy Perry O N has aimed for mainstream pop ONE success. After an abortive career as teen Christian artist Katy Hudson, her birth name, Perry finally hooked up with the production talent and record label honchos who could push her over the top. Seven years after the Katy Hudson album, this single is bringing Katy Perry to the attention of the world, and it is a brilliant recording. The single "UR So Gay," an immediate predecessor to "I Kissed a Girl," did garner some serious attention in the music industry, but its lyrics are too flagrant for widespread acceptance. However, "I Kissed a Girl," fueled by an instrumental wallop provided courtesy of producer Dr. Luke, is the perfect breakthrough. Bathed in praise for "cherry chapstick" and "soft skin, red lips, so kissable," Katy Perry states her unquestionable independence with stylish spirit. "I Kissed a Girl" is a perfect summer hit. The beat pounded out by drums, guitar, and bass will sound perfect with the top down. Both singles, "I Kissed a Girl" and "UR So Gay," demonstrate a songwriting talent to reckon with. This is likely not the last we hear from Katy Perry.

TEA LEAF GREEN LIVE AT THE HUB AUGUST 24 In a few short years, these road warriors have built a strong following. llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll CEDAR FALLS
The success of their fourth album, Taught To Be Proud, was the culmination of years of hard work and determination for San Francisco's Tea Leaf Green. It was a watershed event. Their popularity and acclaim is on the rise. They won a "Jammy" award for the album's title track. They’re being asked to play at every major festival in the country. Their legendary live shows are being captured on a multitude of official downloads and widely traded homemade recordings. “We'll raise up our tent in any town that will have us..." declares the new studio album by San Francisco's Tea Leaf Green. Produced by David Lowery (Cracker, Camper Van Beethoven, Counting Crows, Guster), the album presents eleven, well-crafted songs that tempt the listener to set off on the archetypal American adventure. In times past, you could run away and join the circus or ride the freight trains, and Tea Leaf Green offers the same seductive pull to today's kids. Sharing some of the style and substance of musical contemporaries My Morning Jacket, Wolfmother, and the Raconteurs, Tea Leaf Green conjures the spirit of bands like '70s Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and The Grateful Dead, taking classic sounds and giving them a present-day polish. Tea Leaf Green reminds
us at every turn just how alluring rock 'n' roll can be. Tea Leaf Green consistently delivers mind bending live performances to their loyal and evergrowing fan base. Nightly, the band explores the depths of their prodigious songbook, taking everyone along for an exhilarating ride. In a few short years, these road warriors have built a strong following, consistently filling venues across the country and becoming a warmly received, go-to band on the festival circuit with stand-out performances at Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, 10K Lakes, and The Echo Project, among others. The band's chops earned the respect of their contemporaries and they have shared the stage with The Dave Matthews Band, Trey Anastasio, Gov't Mule, Bruce Hornsby, John Popper, Bob Weir, Sean Lennon and many others. Experience Tea Leaf Green for yourself... and enjoy the journey.
With 14 cuts Celebration delivers true to form pure Rap. James stated that he wants Midwest Rap to become more recognized throughout the industry. Taking artistic aim at the West and East Coast Rap/Hip Hop Artist is his number goal. “Just because we are from Iowa does not mean we can’t compete with the West or East Coast.” James said. With so many one-dimensional rappers with the depth of a cardboard cutout, Duble OO is the genuine article in every sense of the term. The new CD “Celebration” can be purchased for just $10 at local area outlets or order information can be found at www.vuecv.com

ou cannot spell Waterloo without double 00” That was the opening comments when I sat down with local Rap Artist Duble OO. No glitz, no glamour just straight music from this up and coming local artist. “I am not about how many chains I can throw around my neck, it’s about the music, not me” stated Duble OO. D-OO went on to say, “All those things don’t make you better artist and I don’t need to hide behind those things.” After graduating from East High, Duble OO (Clifton James) moved to Minneapolis to enhance his music career and talents. He simply reported, “I needed to return to my roots!” Track number three, “319”, references his hometown Iowa roots. Not only is music his passion, but he voiced that he also wanted to complete his degree in elementary education. James will be graduating within seven-months. Performing for just over nine-years, Duble OO’s new CD “Celebration” features 14 tracks. It has just been released and is “fresh-to-death,” as he puts it. “Celebration” showcases some of the best Midwest Rap artist: Young Ezzy(La Di Da Da feat, track 8) Codared,( Let It Flow feat, track 7) Gucciveli,( Warrior feat, track 13) and O.C.P. (Out of Control). Executive Producers: Gemices Royale and Duble OO have produced a Rap CD that can, without a
doubt, go head-to-head with any big city artist. This is not some underground CD but a compilation of music that speaks to everyone. “I sing about real-life experience that everyone has probably gone through”, explains James. He adds, “My songs are not about being shot or carrying guns, but real situations.” More than anything in the world, the lyrics on his first full-length disc proves that Duble OO wants to be respected and he puts his best foot forward in the hopes of garnering respect for his skills as more than just a laid-back Rap Artist.
View all sorts of beautiful, intersting and venomous creatures from all over the world including lizards, spiders, snakes, invertebrates, jelly fish and more. Highlights of “Venom” include the use of manipulative cameras that allow visitors to zoom in on the animals in the exhibit, and a crawl through rattlesnake exhibit that allows visitors to get a “prey’s-eye view’ of a rattlesnake.
