JEFF CORWIN ANIMAL PLANET STAR TO SPEAK AT CLARKE COLLEGE, OCT. 5 WHEN NOT IN THE FIELD, CORWIN LECTURES ON WILDLIFE, ECOLOGY, AND CONSERVATION TO AUDIENCES ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. NOW AN EXPERT IN RAINFOREST ANIMALS Dubuque, Iowa - Clarke College is pleased to announce that this year's 11th Annual Mackin-Mailander Lecture Series will feature "Tales from the Field with Jeff Corwin" on Sunday, Oct. 5, in the Robert and Ruth Kehl Center on the Clarke campus. The lecture will be held in conjunction with the college's Homecoming festivities. More information about ticket sales for the lecture will be available in the coming weeks.
Emmy winner Jeff Corwin has been working for the conservation of endangered species and ecosystems around the world since he was a teenager. Animal Planet audiences best know Corwin as host of "The Jeff Corwin Experience," one of the most popular shows on cable television. The series reaches over 13 million viewers in the United States, and is viewed in more than 70 countries worldwide. Recently, Corwin hosted a series of CNN specials with Anderson Cooper, "Planet in Peril," and continues to make appearances on CNN to discuss the problems facing our environment today.
1993, Corwin addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations regarding the need to conserve neotropical rain forests. By 1994, he had served as expedition naturalist for "The Jason Project," the acclaimed documentary series produced by National Geographic and EDS under the direction of Robert Ballard.
Corwin also stars in "Corwin's Quest," in which Corwin explores several themes or sensory qualities of animal behavior, including sound, smell, diet, defense, attack, and survival. His first book, "Living on the Edge: Amazing Relationships in the Natural World" is now available in paperback and his newest television show, "Into the West," will explore the American West and its wildlife.
Corwin has bachelor of science degrees in biology and anthropology from Bridgewater State College, and a master of science degree in wildlife and fisheries conservation from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In 1999, Bridgewater State College honored him with a doctorate in public education for his work in communicating about the need for a sustainable approach to using natural resources and the importance of conserving endangered species. Corwin firmly believes that through education and awareness, the natural resources, wildlife, and ecosystems that make up our planet will be conserved for future generations.
When not in the field, Corwin lectures on wildlife, ecology, and conservation to audiences across the United States. Now an expert in rainforest animals, Corwin was first introduced to the tropical rain forests in 1984, while on an expedition to Belize. The experience fueled his interest in the study and conservation of these ecological marvels. In
The Mackin-Mailander Lecture Series was established in the spring of 1997 after Clarke received gifts from two alums, Mary Mackin '34 and Verna Slattery-Mailander '20, to establish an endowed lecture series. property, and acid reflux. Less than a week after Dom’s release from prison, Joe Morelli has shadowy figures breaking into his house and dying in his basement. He’s getting threatening messages, Loretta is kidnapped, and Dom is missing.
NOCTURNE
Following the success of his previous mob histories, Paddy Whackedand The Westies By T.J. ENGLISH
THE CATASTROPHE: Moonman Morelli hires Walter “Mooner” Dunphy, stoner and “inventor” turned crime fighter, to protect his house. Morelli can’t afford a lot on a cop’s salary, and Mooner will work for potatoes.
An award-winning journalist, screenwriter, and historian offers the complete story of how the mob infiltrated Havana in the 1950s, made a fortune, and then lost it all to Fidel Castro. Synopses & Review
Boyd Childress - Library Journal Following the success of his previous mob histories, Paddy Whackedand The Westies, English relates the rise and fall of the mob in Havana, from the early days of Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano to the cruel regime of Batista and then Castro's revolution. English's engaging narrative reads with the gripping quality of fiction: the dark underworld of Havana comes to life in the author's lively descriptions of gambling, drugs, and sex. Using government hearings, published sources, and his own recent interviews, the author shows us Lansky and the mob, for whom Cuba was a dream come true-a gambling Mecca turned money magnet-all under the protection of the corrupt Batista administration. Mobster types descended on the island for a share of the excitement and profits, but revolution was fermenting. The dream burst as Castro and the "bearded ones" targeted gambling, corruption, and American influences so prevalent in Havana. English mixes his own insights about the Cuban Revolution into his specific accounts of mob influence and criminal activity. The results are highly recommended for public and academic libraries.
R EC OM M E N DE D
THE CUPCAKE STEPHANIE PLUM: Stephanie and Morelli have a long-standing relationship that involves sex, affection, and driving each other nuts. She’s a bond enforcement agent with more luck than talent, and she’s involved in this bankrobbery-gone-bad disaster from day one.
VUE PICK
Old Havana mambos on the brink of the abyss in this chronicle of Cuba in the decades before the 1959 revolution. True-crime writer English (Paddy Whacked) presents an empire-building saga in which the "Havana Mob" of American gangsters, led by visionary financier Meyer Lansky, controlled Cuba. Empowered by permissive gambling laws and payoffs to dictator Fulgencio Batista, the Mafia poured millions into posh hotels, casinos and nightclubs, skimmed huge profits and sought to make Havana its financial headquarters. The results: exuberant nightlife, a giddy Afro-Cuban jazz scene, sordid backroom sex shows and the occasional grisly gangland hit. English revels in purple prose ("the island seethed like a bitch with a low-grade fever") and decadent details, including an orgy with Frank Sinatra and a bevy of prostitutes that was interrupted by autographseeking Girl Scouts and a nun. But his estimate of the importance of the Havana mob and its "showdown" with Castro's puritanical rebels seems inflated. More supplicant than suzerain to Batista, the mob focused on internecine feuds and paid little attention to the brewing insurrection. The casinos, hotels and nightclubs were all the mob owned-but they sure threw one hell of a party.

THE CRISIS: A favor for Ranger Security expert Carlos Manoso, street name Ranger, has a job for Stephanie that will involve night work. Morelli has his own ideas regarding Stephanie’s evening activities. THE CONCLUSION: Only the fearless should read Fourteen. Thrills, chills, and incontinence may result.
Publishers Weekly New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum finds herself saddled with the teenage son of Loretta Rizzi, her latest skip, at the start of one of the less cohesive entries in Evanovich's bestselling series (Lean Mean Thirteen, etc.). When Mario "Zook" Rizzi and his obsession with the online roleplaying game "Minionfire" become too much for Stephanie to handle, the pair camp out at Trenton cop Joe Morelli's house. Stephanie also takes a job with the mysterious Ranger, helping him "babysit" Brenda, a fading music star in town for a concert. After Loretta is kidnapped, Stephanie and Morelli discover that to ensure Loretta's safety, they'll have to find the $9 million that disappeared after a bank robbery committed by Loretta's recently paroled brother, Dom. A mildmannered stalker and the upcoming nuptials of Stephanie's colleague Lula to Ranger's right-hand man, Tank, add to the crazy fun. Despite a number of unresolved subplots, this Plum adventure won't disappoint those looking for the perfect summer beach read.

In most cases, employees find out about computer monitoring during a performance evaluation when the information collected is used to evaluate the employee's work. This is probably not the best time to be informed about employee monitoring!
he result is a brave new world of murky laws, murky ethics, murky boss-worker relationships - and a stark clash between old notions of privacy. Many employees are under the impression that their right to personal privacy extends to the workplace. These people may be surprised at just how widespread employee monitoring truly is. And when it comes to employee privacy, the innocent looking machine on your desk is the single greatest threat. A survey from amanet.org indicates that 76% of employers monitor websites visited, 50% review computer files, and 55% store and review emails. The same article claims that about one quarter of companies have fired someone for improperly using the Internet. The reality is that current laws do not prevent your employer from using various methods of employee monitoring - even without your knowledge. Whenever employers’ actions have been challenged in U.S. courts, the law has almost always found in favour of the company. The general consensus is that the organization not only owns all of the equipment used to complete the work, but effectively the 8+ hours of time you spend there each day. Any kind of computer monitoring is complex, costly, and can impact company morale; so why are organizations eager to do it? In the information age, a single mouse click – whether intentional or not – can cost a company millions. We also live at a time when lawsuits from things such as sexual harassment, liability, or unethical activity can be equally as damaging. While these may be extreme cases, the combination of the incredible convenience and relative permanence of electronic communication has made it goldmine for corporate lawyers. So what can you do to resist this kind of privacy invasion at work? The first step, of course, is to find out what your company will admit to. They aren’t actually required to disclose most types of monitoring, but there may be a written or unwritten policy that covers it. If you’re still losing sleep over this, we present a few ideas that should appeal to range of people including the mildly concerned and the truly paranoid. Oh and we’re not responsible if your attempts at subverting Big Brother land you a very private, but very unemployed life. COMPANY SPONSORED SPYWARE:: There are hundreds of products on the market designed to provide as much information about your computer habits as your boss feels he deserves.
There are hundreds of products on the market designed to provide as much information about your computer habits as your boss feels he or she deserves. These things include periodic screenshots, webpage and application logs, and even keystroke recording. A great way to feed your anxiety is to read how these products are pitched to your superiors.
THE FOLLOWING ARE ACTUAL QUOTES LISTED AS FEATURES OF THIS TYPE OF SOFTWARE:: “Record the user's every move.” “When [the] user types any keystrokes… this text appears on your screen in real time.” “Stealth/Silent installation and invisible running.” AND MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE:: “While some employees may not appreciate having their personal internet time monitored and limited, most employees ultimately are glad to have this temptation eliminated or reduced.” It’s a good thing this company knows exactly what you and I want. Even the most hardworking employee will occasionally have to do a little online banking on their lunch
break or fire off a personal email on their way out the door. When one of these programs is installed, the common employee has no control over where this information is potentially sent (picture a snooping IT manager chuckling at the pet name your wife just called you). These programs are designed to be difficult to detect and disable. IS MY EMPLOYER ALLOWED TO SEE WHAT IS ON MY TERMINAL WHILE I AM WORKING?:: Generally, yes. Since the employer owns the computer network and the terminals, he or she is free to use them to monitor employees. Employees are given some protection from computer and other forms of electronic monitoring under certain circumstances. Union contracts, for example, may limit the employer's right to monitor. Also, public sector employees may have some minimal rights under the United States Constitution, in particular the Fourth Amendment which safeguards against unreasonable search and seizure. HOW CAN I TELL IF I AM BEING MONITORED AT MY TERMINAL?:: Most computer monitoring equipment allows employers to monitor without the employees' knowledge. However, some employers do notify employees that monitoring takes place. This information may be communicated in memos, employee handbooks, union contracts, at meetings or on a sticker attached to the computer.
IS ELECTRONIC MAIL PRIVATE? WHAT ABOUT VOICE MAIL?:: In most cases, no. If an electronic mail (e-mail) system is used at a company, the employer owns it and is allowed to review its contents. Messages sent within the company as well as those that are sent from your terminal to another company or from another company to you can be subject to monitoring by your employer. This includes web-based email accounts such as Yahoo and Hotmail as well as instant messages. The same holds true for voice mail systems. In general, employees should not assume that these activities are not being monitored and are private. Several workplace privacy court cases have been decided in the employer's favor. COMPANIES ARE INCREASINGLY PUTTING THEIR POLICIES INTO ACTION: 26 PERCENT HAVE FIRED WORKERS FOR MISUSING THE INTERNET AND ANOTHER 25 PERCENT HAVE TERMINATED EMPLOYEES FOR E-MAIL MISUSE. SO IF PRIVACY - AND KEEPING YOUR JOB - CONCERN YOU, FOLLOW THESE TIPS FOR WORK: 1. Review your company's handbook. 2. Don't use company e-mail for private messages. 3. Always assume your messages will be share with others. 4. Keep your passwords private. 5. Stay off sensitive Web sites while at work. 6. Turn off your computer. 7. Pay your bills at home. 8. Don’t email your resume from work! If you are concerned about privacy and monitoring practices at your company, re-read your company handbook manual or ask your human resources department. Most businesses alert employees to the possibility that e-mail messages or online activities may be tracked. Keep in mind that your purpose at work is to - well - work and realize that it's better to be safe than sorry. If you keep your personal e-mails to a minimum or avoid them altogether, make as few personal phone calls as possible and stay off the Internet, privacy shouldn't be an issue for you. 11 VUE : : ISSUE 150

ALICE COOPER
Into the Sun
Along Came a Spider
JULY 22.08
JULY 29.08
Their first new studio album in ten years.
Alice Cooper does it again and does it unlike most.
The 2008 lineup features three of the four founding members, including singer Kevin Martin, guitarist Peter Klett, and drummer Scott Mercado. Bass player Bardi Martin has been replaced by Adam Kury. New single "Stand" immediately on over 100 stations. Look for them on tour with Seether and Breaking Benjamin. RIYL: Three Days Grace, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Alice In Chains and Metallica.
The man is like fine wine and is proving how truly special of a talent he is as he grows older. This album can easily be touted as one of the best Coop releases of his entire career as it stands up along side the best of the best. The return to the classic sound of the last couple of albums is continued here but the production values that were lacking from Dirty Diamonds are not missing on this delicious platter of Alice Cooper delights.

RELEASE DATE: JULY 22.08
JULY 29.08
JULY 29.08
2008 release, Paul Weller's ninth solo studio album in an amazing 30 year career that saw him front The Jam and The Style Council
Dr. Noah Drake shows his rockside manner.
The Woodstock icon returns with a new studio album.
RS has withstood the test of time far better than most critics would ever have imagined. His new cd was recorded in 2 days.
The folk-rock visionary has been a mainstay on the live-music circuit since the 1960s and still clocks in more time on the road.
PAUL WELLER 22 Dreams I thought the time was right to make the sort of record I wanted to make,'' says Paul Weller of the creative process which led to his striking ninth solo album 22 Dreams. ''Instead of worrying about anyone else, I wanted to really push the boat out. I think the result is going to surprise a few people.'' Surprises have always been part of the artistic vernacular for the man who changed rock forever with The Jam, explored a host of eclectic influences with The Style Council and cemented his position as the patriarch of Brit pop with his legendary solo work. 22 Dreams is the latest chapter in a creative journey spanning 30 years, with material spanning the full breadth of popular music rock to classical, avant garde to funk and spoken word to experimental. In addition to a cast of Weller s frequent collaborators including Steve Cradock and producer Simon Dine, 22 Dreams also features some of the largest beneficiaries of Weller’s incalculable musical influence. Noel Gallagher and Gem from Oasis lend their talents to Echoes Around the Sun, a writing collaboration between Weller and Gallagher. Ex-Blur guitarist Graham Coxon appears on Black River. The spirit of collaboration and an in-the-moment creative approach have resulted in one of Weller’s most spirited works and one that is sure to expand the artistic canon of the one and only Modfather.

NOPE OBAMA PROMISES STRONG ARTS POLICY WHILE JOHN McCAIN’S POSITION SEEMS A BIT LESS PROMISING BY MICHAEL LITHGOW
Not usually a hot-button
UPDATE 2008 topic in American presidential politics, Barack Obama has issued a comprehensive statement in support of arts and arts education in the United States. His campaign position focuses on nine points: Reinvesting in arts education, expanding public grants for arts education, publicly championing arts education, creating an artist corps, increasing funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, promoting cultural diplomacy, providing health care for artists and ensuring tax fairness for artists. Sure, its only words and promises at this stage. And, a quick check of Obama's website reveals that arts and culture do not appear in his master list of campaign issues, a drop-down list from the website's navigation bar. Still, it's good to see that the arts and cultural policy are at least on the agenda, and also to see a front-running candidate campaigning for increased funding and support for arts education and artists. This should definitely be part of the national debate. Tell your friends. Demand answers from the candidates and their campaign offices about 18 VUE : : ISSUE 150
arts funding. Put support for the arts, artists and arts education an the political agenda. Tell Obama to add Arts & Culture to his drop-down list of issues on his website. BARACK OBAMA: A CHAMPION FOR THE ARTS:: Our nationʼs creativity has filled the worldʼs libraries, museums, recital halls, movie houses, and marketplaces with works of genius. The arts embody the American spirit of self-definition. As the author of two best-selling books - Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope Barack Obama uniquely appreciates the role and value of creative expression. A PLATFORM IN SUPPORT OF THE ARTS:: Reinvest in Arts Education: To remain competitive in the global economy, America needs to reinvigorate the kind of creativity and innovation that has made this country great. To do so, we must nourish our childrenʼs creative skills. In addition to giving our children the science and math skills they need to compete in the new global context, we should also encourage the ability to think creatively that comes from a meaningful arts education. Unfortunately, many
school districts are cutting instructional time for art and music education. Barack Obama believes that the arts should be a central part of effective teaching and learning. The Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts recently said “The purpose of arts education is not to produce more artists, though that is a byproduct. The real purpose of arts education is to create complete human beings capable of leading successful and productive lives in a free society.” To support greater arts education, Obama will:
As president, Barack Obama will use the bully pulpit and the example he will set in the White House to promote the importance of arts and arts education in America EXPAND PUBLIC/PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS BETWEEN SCHOOLS AND ARTS ORGANIZATIONS:: Barack Obama will increase resources for the U.S. Department of Educationʼs Arts Education Model
Development and Dissemination Grants, which develop public/private partnerships between schools and arts organizations. Obama will also engage the foundation and corporate community to increase support for public/private partnerships. CREATE AN ARTIST CORPS: Barack Obama supports the creation of an “Artists Corps” of young artists trained to work in low-income schools and their communities. Studies in Chicago have demonstrated that test scores improved faster for students enrolled in low-income schools that link arts across the curriculum than scores for students in schools lacking such programs. PUBLICLY CHAMPION THE IMPORTANCE OF ARTS EDUCATION: As president, Barack Obama will use the bully pulpit and the example he will set in the White House to promote the importance of arts and arts education in America. Not only is arts education indispensable for success in a rapidly changing, high skill, information economy, but studies show that arts education raises test scores in other subject areas as well.
MIXEDmedia SUPPORT INCREASED FUNDING FOR THE NEA:: Over the last 15 years, government funding for the National Endowment for the Arts has been slashed from $175 million annually in 1992 to $125 million today. Barack Obama supports increased funding for the NEA, the support of which enriches schools and neighborhoods all across the nation and helps to promote the economic development of countless communities. PROMOTE CULTURAL DIPLOMACY:: American artists, performers and thinkers – representing our values and ideals – can inspire people both at home and all over the world. Through efforts like that of the United States Information Agency, America’s cultural leaders were deployed around the world during the Cold War as artistic ambassadors and helped win the war of ideas by demonstrating to the world the promise of America. Artists can be utilized again to help us win the war of ideas against Islamic extremism. Unfortunately, our resources for cultural diplomacy are at their lowest level in a decade. Barack Obama will work to reverse this trend and improve and expand public-private partnerships to expand cultural and arts exchanges throughout the world. ATTRACT FOREIGN TALENT:: The flipside to promoting American arts and culture abroad is welcoming members of the foreign arts community to America. Opening America’s doors to students and professional artists provides the kind of two-way cultural understanding that can break down the barriers that feed hatred and fear. As America tightened visa restrictions after 9/11, the world’s most talented students and artists, who used to come here, went elsewhere. Barack Obama will streamline the visa process to return America to its rightful place as the world’s top destination for artists and art students. PROVIDE HEALTH CARE TO ARTISTS:: Finding affordable health coverage has often been one of the most vexing obstacles for artists and those in the creative community. Since many artists work independently or have nontraditional employment relationships, employer-based coverage is unavailable and individual policies are financially out of reach. Barack Obama’s plan will provide all Americans with quality, affordable health care. His plan includes the creation of a new public program that will allow individuals and small businesses to buy affordable health care similar to that available to federal employees. His plan also creates a National Health Insurance Exchange to reform the private insurance market and allow Americans to enroll in participating private plans, which would have to provide comprehensive benefits, issue every applicant a policy, and charge fair and stable premiums. For those who still cannot afford coverage, the government will provide a subsidy. His health plan will lower costs for the typical American family by up to $2,500 per year. ENSURE TAX FAIRNESS FOR ARTISTS:: Barack Obama supports the Artist-Museum Partnership Act, introduced by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT). The Act amends the Internal Revenue Code to allow artists to deduct the fair market value of their work, rather than just the costs of the materials, when they make charitable contributions.
if you’re wondering how McCain feels about arts education, you can keep on wondering, because his entire education policy goes something like this: here’s your voucher; now go somewhere else or stop complaining.
Long ago, McCain voted for the Helms Amendment, which hoped to deny funding to work considered “obscene.” Certainly, this amendment might have put a dent in the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s current blockbuster, “Frida,” considering that it features obscenity central to the artist’s work. In 1999, McCain voted with, among others, Sens. Robert Smith, Jesse Helms, Strom Thurmond, Sam Brownback and John Ashcroft (who believes dancing is an affront to God, a notion I find obscene) for the SmithAshcroft amendment. The amendment hoped to cut all funding for the NEA from that year’s budget. And here’s the introduction it received:
“In proposing the amendment, Smith explained that his objective was not to reform or restructure the NEA, but to close it down.
He argued that federal funding for the National Endowment for the Arts is unconstitutional. Ashcroft joined Smith in speaking in support of their amendment.”
Our nation’s creativity has filled the world’s libraries, museums, recital halls, movie houses, and marketplaces with works of genius. The arts embody the American spirit of self-definition. As the author of two best-selling books – Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope – Barack Obama uniquely appreciates the role and value of creative expression.
SO, ON TO MR. MCCAIN::
I’ll be blunt here: John . McCain wants to eliminate federal funding for the arts. That’s right, ELIMINATE it. (This from bipartisan Vote-Smart.org.) Even that nice NEA “Shakespeare for a New Generation” program. Alas, poor Yorick. Olivier as Hamlet Whatever your feelings about government funding for arts and the strings attached, some funding, however fraught, is better than none at all
I’d love to list a point-by-point analysis of the Republican candidate’s current positions on arts professionals or funding, but, well, he doesn’t have any. (A quick search of “arts” on McCain’s website turned up Andrew McCain’s Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. Congratulations!) And if you’re wondering how McCain feels about arts education, you can keep on wondering, because his entire education policy goes something like this: here’s your voucher; now go somewhere else or stop complaining. If you’re of the mind that the cream rises to the top and eliminating arts funding will get rid of all the dross cluttering our artistic landscape, then you haven’t visited a school, theater, museum or arts festival lately. Without federal money supporting these outlets, they will disappear. Subscribers cover only a portion of operating funds, and closing the NEA will close them down too. Once that funding dries up–and it just might if McCain wins the election–so will all those theaters, as will our festivals and museums.

MAMMA MIA
Meryl Streep leads an all-star cast in the featurefilm adaptation of the beloved musical that has been seen by more than 30 million people in 160 cities and 8 languages around the world. Bringing the timeless lyrics and melodies of iconic super group ABBA to movie audiences. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsg책rd, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper join Streep in this celebration of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads. An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Streep) is about to let go of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the spirited daughter she's raised alone. For Sophie's wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends-practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski)-from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own. On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna's past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities. Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA's songs from "Dancing Queen" and "S.O.S." to "Money, Money, Money" and "Take a Chance on Me," Mamma Mia! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

When Robert and Nancy marry and move in together, Brennan and Dale are forced to live with each other as step brothers. As their narcissism and downright aggressive laziness threaten to tear the family apart, these two middle-aged, immature, overgrown boys will orchestrate an insane, elaborate plan to bring their parents back together. To pull it off, they must form an unlikely bond that maybe, just maybe, will finally get them out of the house. STARRING: Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Adam Scott, Mary Steenburgen, Kathryn Hahn.
