2020 | ANNUAL REPORT
THE PAST YEAR WAS CHALLENGING due to the
COVID-19 pandemic and the impact it had on VVMF’s in-person programs and events, but we found innovative ways to connect with our supporters and continue our mission. We began 2020 excited to debut our new mobile Education Center exhibit with The Wall That Heals. New exhibit items were chosen to better show the in-country experience as well as the experience of family back home, the impact of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the continuing toll of the Vietnam War today. By mid-March, the pandemic hit and we had to get innovative on ways to continue our mission. National Vietnam War Veterans Day was just around the corner and we made the call to have a virtual ceremony. We wanted to include our supporters so we asked for video submissions saying “welcome home” and we were inundated with videos. Our first virtual ceremony had more than 50,000 views by year’s end. We followed with virtual ceremonies for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. We were happy to partner with Sons and Daughters in Touch for Father’s Day and with the National League of POW/MIA Families for National POW/MIA Recognition Day to produce virtual ceremonies on their behalf. Our staff was excited to get back to The Wall for the first time on Father’s Day when we laid 3,300 roses on behalf of our supporters. We held our first-ever Agent Orange Awareness Day on August

VVMF FY 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
10 - the day thought to be the anniversary of the first time Agent Orange was sprayed in Vietnam. It was a tremendous success as staff laid more than 1,700 orange candles on the Memorial site to bring light to the continuing toll of the use of Agent Orange in the Vietnam War. We were pleased to see communities around the country following our lead with local events. As schools went virtual – it provided a unique opportunity for online lessons on the history of The Wall and items left behind. Our education director answered that call and provided virtual lessons to middle and high schools across the country and even presented to our first elementary school. Since people couldn’t visit The Wall, we brought the experience of The Wall to them through the latest technology. We produced a new Wall Talk tour of the Memorial that looks at the history, design, symbolism and power of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and gives those who can’t travel to Washington, D.C. an in-depth tour at the touch of a button. We continue to add more educational content to our website including our topic pages on the Battle of la Drang, Dogs of the Vietnam War, and more. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of dozens of active volunteers, the Wall of Faces now needs just over 100 photos to be complete! On the grounds of the Memorial site in D.C., we continued with our long-term care and preservation efforts including our regular maintenance on both the In Memory plaque and the Three Servicemen Statue from our Object Conservator throughout
the year. On The Wall, we added three names and updated the status symbols for three service members who were repatriated last year. We look forward to getting back to our traditional in-person ceremonies in 2021 including being able to host the 591 families of our 2020 In Memory honorees who have patiently waited to honor their loved ones in-person. In all, VVMF delivered 11 different virtual productions in 2020, all done with our existing in-house staff. I couldn’t be prouder of our staff and supporters for going above and beyond to continue with our mission under dire circumstances. They are simply remarkable! VVMF remains committed to the original promise we made when The Wall was built in 1982 – the promise to never forget. In these pages, you’ll learn more about some of the incredible work that VVMF was able to do over the past year with your support. We look forward to what we can do together in the future to ensure that our nation’s Vietnam veterans will always be remembered for generations to come. All of these activities were possible ONLY because of your generous support.

VVMF FY 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
VVMF’S WORK HONORS ALL those who served in Vietnam and preserves the legacies of
those who died in the Vietnam War and those who died after the war ended. We work hard every day to keep the promise that The Wall was built on - the promise to never forget those who served and sacrificed in the Vietnam War. In 2020 – we were not able to host many of our traditional in-person events but we found innovative ways to continue to honor our nation’s Vietnam veterans.
• On Veterans Day 2019, we commemorated the 35th anniversary of the Three Servicemen Statue and the 15th anniversary of the In Memory plaque. Memorial Day 2020 was a virtual ceremony and we asked our supporters to let us know who they will “always remember” and they responded in droves with video, audio and text submissions. • Our first all virtual ceremony for 2020 was to commemorate National Vietnam War Veterans Day. User-submitted videos poured in to say “welcome home” to our Vietnam veterans. • While we were unable to host our In Memory ceremony in June, we look forward to honoring our 591 honorees for 2020 in-person in 2021. We took the opportunity to go virtual and present our first-ever online Reading of the Names of all In Memory honorees. • A small group of VVMF staff were happy to be back at the Memorial site on Father’s Day to lay 3,300 roses to honor the fathers who served in Vietnam and those who never had the chance to become fathers. • On August 10th, we held our first-ever Agent Orange Awareness Day – the anniversary of the first day that Agent Orange was thought to be sprayed in Vietnam. A small group of VVMF staff laid more than 1,700 candles at the Memorial site, bringing awareness of the continuing toll of the Vietnam War and encouraging others to do the same in their community. • We were happy to facilitate virtual ceremonies with our partners in 2020 as well. On Father’s Day, we hosted a virtual ceremony for SDIT – Sons and Daughters in Touch. And on National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we hosted a virtual ceremony for the National League of POW/MIA Families to honor our missing service members and their families. All of these ceremonies and events are made possible through the support of our generous donors.
IT IS VVMF’S PRIVILEGE TO MANAGE the long-term care and
preservation of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial site and preserve the legacies of the more than 58,000 service members inscribed on The Wall. The pandemic brought fewer visitors to The Wall in 2020 but VVMF strived to provide each visitor with the best experience possible. Each spring, VVMF receives updates from the Department of Defense on service members who should be added to The Wall as well as those service members who have been repatriated the year prior. VVMF works with the engravers and manages the process to add names and change symbols on The Wall. In 2020, three names were added to The Wall and three status symbols were changed on The Wall to reflect the three service members repatriated in 2019. VVMF ensures that the Three Servicemen Statue and In Memory plaque look their best by having an Object Conservator attend to them throughout the year. The care of the lawn around the Memorial and the printing of new directories are also part of VVMF’s care and preservation efforts for the site. VVMF’s Wall of Faces includes more than 58,000 photos of service members found by volunteers across the country. Including the faces and the remembrances for each service member preserves their legacy online for more than a million online visitors to VVMF.org each year. Through the support of our generous donors, VVMF can facilitate and fund these care and preservation efforts at the Memorial.

VVMF FY 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
THE WALL THAT HEALS EXHIBIT ALLOWS VVMF to
reach into communities across America to honor all those who served in Vietnam and educate younger generations about the impact of the Vietnam War. It gives Vietnam veterans and their families who may not have a chance to travel to Washington, D.C. an opportunity to visit The Wall. Along with our three-quarter scale Wall replica and In Memory plaque replica, an all-new mobile Education Center display was unveiled in 2020. New exhibits include: items representative of the experience for a service member in Vietnam as well as items representative of those at home; the impact of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial; and the continuing toll of the Vietnam War on veterans and their families. Guided group tours are provided by VVMF staff to student groups as well as general visitor groups while on site in a community. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 The Wall That Heals tour was cut short and the exhibit was only able to visit five communities. We continued our partnership with the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) to provide trucking companies and drivers to “Haul The Wall” from community to community. A special thanks to USAA as the presenting sponsor for the 2020 tour. The Wall That Heals runs on support from our generous corporate sponsors and individual donors.

VVMF FY 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
KEEPING THE PROMISE TO “NEVER FORGET” puts education
efforts at the forefront of VVMF’s mission. We must educate current generations on the lasting impact of the Vietnam War to ensure that those who served and sacrificed in Vietnam are never forgotten. In the last year, focusing on technology and virtual teaching opportunities, VVMF:
• Launched a new VVMF.org website with an expanded education section including a timeline of the Vietnam era and topic pages on subjects such as POW/MIA, Women on The Wall, and Chaplains on The Wall. • Completed digital education programs for more than 800 students, including 175 adult learners. These programs run all over the country including high schools in New Jersey, middle schools in New York, and senior centers in Ohio. • Presented six professional development sessions on the Vietnam era to educators with Prince William County (VA), National History Day, First Division Museum, and the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation. • Added a part-time Tour Guide position at The Wall in Washington, D.C. to give an overview and history of the Memorial to visitors. • Partnered with schools and teachers in Prince William County, Virginia to teach more than 1,800 students about service members on The Wall and the history of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial through our Traveling Trunk program. • Updated our mobile tour app to give those who can’t make it to Washington a chance to virtually visit and learn about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and those inscribed on it. • Grew VVMF’s international teacher network to more than 700 teachers. VVMF can continue and expand these educational efforts because of generous supporters across the country.
