DEAR FRIENDS: On behalf of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF), I am pleased to welcome you to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for our sixteenth In Memory Day ceremony. As is our annual tradition, we gather in the shadow of The Wall that memorializes those who are listed as killed or missing in action to pay tribute to the more than 3.4 million Americans who served in Southeast Asia from 1955-1975. We are here to call attention to those who have passed, and to give them the honor they deserve. Today, we memorialize those who mightily shouldered the burden of war, bravely endured the wounds of war and proudly answered their nation’s call to service. An entire generation of patriots served honorably and, thankfully, most returned home. However, many never fully recovered, either physically or emotionally, from their experiences in that war. That is why the In Memory program exists – because only a fraction of the casualties actually died on the battlefields of Vietnam. Many more carried their wounds back to “the world” and suffered long after the actual fighting ended. As these men and women pass, it is our duty and our solemn promise, to welcome them home to this place. They may not meet the criteria for addition to The Wall, but they certainly meet the criteria of joining their brothers and sisters in this place of honor and remembrance. This year, we recognize the contributions made by 131 service members to ensure the cause of freedom and liberty. Their names will be added to the In Memory Honor Roll and the memory of their service will forever be linked to this Wall. For as long as this memorial stands, and as long as visitors come to this place to learn, your loved ones will be remembered. Their sacrifices will not be forgotten. Thank you all for joining us here today. Sincerely,

Jan C. Scruggs Founder and President Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund

JOIN US ON FATHER’S DAY SUNDAY, JUNE 15, 2014 AT 10 : 0 0 A . M . Please join us tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for our annual Father’s Day Rose Remembrance Ceremony at The Wall. Father’s Day is a time to honor all of our fathers, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) will continue the annual tradition of paying special tribute to fathers. Every year on Father’s Day, volunteers join sons and daughters of veterans and affix long-stemmed roses with messages of love and honor, sent from across the country to those lost in the war. Each message is read aloud and each rose is touched to The Wall before finally being placed at the base of the Memorial. Red roses symbolize those killed in action. Yellow roses symbolize those missing in action. White roses with red tips symbolize those who are part of our In Memory program. Family, friends and other visitors are invited to take part as the emotional ceremony concludes with a bed of roses surrounding the memorial, a breathtaking sight that demonstrates both the gratitude and the sacrifices of families impacted by foreign conflict.

ABOUT THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL FUND Established in 1979, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., promoting healing and educating about the impact of the Vietnam War. Today’s In Memory Ceremony and other annual VVMF ceremonies are made possible by contributions from our supporters. VVMF’s annual programs include:

MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCE AT THE WALL The annual Memorial Day ceremony is hosted yearly by VVMF and the National Park Service to pay tribute to members of America’s armed forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam and in all conflicts.

IN MEMORY DAY OBSERVANCE The In Memory program honors those who died as a result of the Vietnam War, but whose deaths do not fit the Department of Defense criteria for inclusion upon the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Every year there is a ceremony to pay tribute to these men and women who sacrificed so much for their country. The ceremony is held on Flag Day.

ABOUT THE VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL FUND VVMF’s annual programs (continued):

FATHER’S DAY ROSE REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY Every year on Father’s Day, volunteers join sons and daughters of those whose names are inscribed on The Wall and affix long-stemmed roses with messages of love and honor, sent from across the country to those lost in the war. Each message is read aloud and each rose is touched to the loved one’s name on The Wall before finally being placed at the base of the Memorial.

VETERANS DAY OBSERVANCE AT THE WALL Each year thousands of visitors to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial gather to honor our nation’s veterans. On this special day, prominent Americans from all walks of life come to the Memorial to deliver thoughtevoking and patriotic speeches. This ceremony pays tribute to all of our country’s service members, regardless of what conflict they served in.

CHRISTMAS TREE CEREMONY Before Christmas each year, the Memorial Fund staff and volunteers decorate a tree at the apex of The Wall. The tree is decorated with thousands of holiday messages sent to the Memorial Fund to honor those who served with the U.S. Armed Forces in Vietnam and other military conflicts and their families. If you would like to make a donation in support of these programs, please go to www.vvmf.org or call 202-393-0090.

About the In Memory Program The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) is dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and promoting healing and educating about the impact of the Vietnam War. The legacy of the Memorial includes not only those whose names are etched in the granite wall, but embraces all who served during the Vietnam War. The In Memory Program honors those that died as a result of the Vietnam War but whose deaths do not fit the Department of Defense parameters for inclusion upon The Wall. Many thousands of service members and civilians died as a result of their involvement in the war, but not as a direct result of combat wounds, as is dictated for inscription on The Wall. If you have a family member or friend whose death was related to involvement in the Vietnam War and would like to have that person considered for inclusion in the In Memory Honor Roll, contact VVMF at 202-393-0090 or visit our website for details and to download the In Memory application: www.vvmf.org/InMemoryProgram.

Our Special Thanks Special thanks go out to the volunteers of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, who have dedicated thousands of hours to the Memorial over the years. VVMF is proud to have their help and dedication! A special thanks in particular to VVMF volunteer, Tamora Papas, for her support of the In Memory program. A big thanks to the families and friends of the In Memory Honorees for journeying to Washington, DC to take part in this special day.
