I am a Dutch urbanist and public space designer. I studied urbanism at TU Delft, but by now I am more and more specialized in public space and landscape design. In the previous years I gained lots of experience in the design of streets, boulevards and other public spaces in Moscow, Russia. During my stay in Russia I worked on the redesign of more than 50 kilometers of streets and boulevards and was responsible for planting 2800 large sized trees along boulevards and various pocket parks and urban gardens in the center of Moscow. I am a pragmatic and hands-on designer. A problem solver that cares about comfortable and attractive city life. My strength is to come up with surprising but still feasible, design solutions. In my experience it is crucial to collaborate with other experts, starting from early stages, if you want to get exciting results. During my studies I specialized in the aspect of flexibility in strategic planning. My professional interest also covers landscape architecture, heritage preservation and water related issues as part of integrated design solutions.

Groen advies voor overige ontwerpteams in Strelka KB
Begeleiding ontwerpbureaus

‘My Street’ program
Upgrade of Moscow’s public space During my work in Moscow at Strelka KB and Strelka Architects (Aug 2015-Dec2016), I have worked on the ‘My Street’ project. A comprehensive project for the improvement of public spaces in the center of Moscow. It included design, consultancy and strategy planning in the domain of public space, design standards, urban management and traffic/street design.
Garden ring
The design task was to completely rethink the way streets and boulevards in Moscow look like and how they could be used in the future. The current car focused approach needed to be replaced by an approach that fosters
Boulevard ring
pedestrians and makes comfortable places. We proposed to the transport ers Tv
department to narrow all traffic lanes, to reduce the maximum speed, to
ya ka
reduce parking (and introduce payed parking). With the department of nature protection we negotiated new standards for tree planting along roads and streets (...not existing in the current standards that date back to the 1960's). This allowed us to plant 2800 large sized lane trees along the
Kurskaya Station
various boulevards.

My role at Strelka: As the lead landscape design, I worked with a small
Gorky park
team of landscape architects on the implementation of planting (lane trees, parklets, urban gardens). As an urbanist I worked on placemaking concepts, design standards and boulevard design. As a foreigner in a Russian company it was my task to contunuously introduce and implement European ideas about street design and place making. I had to combine various roles, projects, design stages and scale levels. But all projects had the same aim; to make the city more livable, comfortble and beautiful.

Large advertisements are removed
Widening of the pedestrian space to a minimum of 2,2m for a comfortable space for two people to walk next to each other.
Entrances to courtyards are now lowered parts of the pavement
All benches, bins and lightpoles and traffic signs are moved to one dedicated technical zone. All overhead cables are removed.
We managed to reduce the standards for minimal dimension for a parking place to 5.5m x 2.4m.
Moscovites got addicted to the use of their car. They could not immagine that the city would still work with 50% less parking.
Pavement system Variation but a similar sytem of pavement throuhout the streets of the center of Moscow. All pavement consists of various types of granite, with different finishes that range from polished to thermo roughened to bouchered stones.

Moscow's Garden ring Re-design of 2nd ring road
The project is a drastic upgrade of the public space of the second ring road of the city of Moscow. The 15 kilometer long heavily used expressway is notorious for its traffic jams, antipollution and noisy environment and disorganized omnipresent parking on the sidewalks. The redesign brings the number of traffic lanes back from 4-11 lanes in each direction to 5 lanes in each direction. The lanes are narrowed to 3.5m. This creates the space for a parking lane, a row of trees and the redesign of the sidewalk as a place for people. It was my responsibility to implement more than 3500 large lane trees in the design (of which 500 already have been planted). I worked on the concept, preliminary design and the DD stage: making sketches, site plans and details in CAD.
Concept: from a 12 to 20 lane highway to a green boulevard
> 2015: The car usage, traffic jams and parking problems got out of hand. Livability in Moscow was higly compromised. People gave up; they did not care about their surroundings any more. The highway on the image is actually the cities most prestegious street that leads to the Kremlin. It shows a fairly typical situation: An overkill of traffic lanes (build for parades!), advertisements and cables everywhere, a narrow and low quality strip for pedestrians that is strongly compromized by one or more layers of parked cars. It is noisy, the air quality is bad. Certainly not a place for people.
Greenery concept Lots of additional greenery! Planting has to become important again in the garden ring. An additional 3500 large boulevard trees, 10 km of hedges and numerous urban gardens will do the name ‘Garden ring’ justice!
Trees structure space At least one continuous line of trees on both sides of the road will be planted to make the urban environment visually less chaotic when you drive, cycle or walk through it.
Recognizable segments Each segment, often corresponding with street names, has its own feature tree. Recognizable by their colour, texture or transparency, trees create a rhythm when driving through the ring.
Opening up to show monuments Openings in the line of trees are made to emphasize squares and monuments. These are points of recognition and get extra importance as they are the only places where trees do not block the view.
Trees mitigate traffic noise Big trees next to the road absorb a part of the traffic noise and prevent the echoing of sound between the façades. If there is more space, a second row of trees is added and a hedge of 1,4 m height is placed under these trees to create a more effective buffer.
Zubovskiy Bulvar
Restauration of the facades; shouting advertisements are removed or replaced by more subtle ones.
Novinskiy boulevard
Unique pavement pattern for the pedestrian zone.
Recognizable pavement pattern in front of the facade that is extra permeable.
New energy efficient street lighting.
Special curbs to protect trees from parked cars and from de-icing salts.
Clearly separated pedestrian zone without, protected from 'wild' parking.
The second row of trees brings shade for pedestrians during the summer.
Lighting system Different types of lamp posts and armatures are used to span the range of diverse needs. Preferably only one line of lamps on each side of the streets with lighting in both directions. If the pavement is wider than 10 meters a secon line of dedicated pedestrian lamps is used.
Pavement system A strict set of design rules is applied to the existing conditions troughout the whole length of the Garden Ring. All 15 km of public space will therefore have a recognizable and coherent image. All pavement consists of various types of granite, with different finishes that range from polished to thermo roughened to bouchered stones.
Vozrozhdenye granite Thermo treatment finish 400 x 200
Vozrozhdenye granite Thermo treatment finish 600 x 400 x 80
Gabbro granite Thermo treatment finish 600 x 400 x 80
Public space layout Whenever space is available, a double row of large sized lane trees is placed. The trees along the road stand preferably in a long and elevated planting bed. A low hedge gives better comfort for pedestrians.

bureau: © Strelka KB status: Fase 1 afgerond, DO fase 2 goedgekeurd, oplevering eind 2017 rol: Landschaps en beplantings ontwerp in VO, DO en uitvoering.

Design standards, Moscow Streets & public spaces
Russian urban design is still very much based on regulation that leads to standardized design solutions. Strongly rooted in functionalist and modernist principles, all design possibilities lead to the development of micro rayons. Similarly, the design of streets and public space in Moscow was (and largely still is) the domain of traffic engineers, bureaucrats and infrastructure builders. Modernizing the design standards, that often date back to the 1960’s, is crucial in order to make a more human oriented approach possible. In these books new books we focused on setting new design standards that foster comfort, safety and improve the quality of the environment.
Main goals for improvements were; - Improved comfort (safety, storm water, urban climate, noise) - Storm water management as an integral part of the design - Systemic traffic safety; lower speeds at safe crossings - Parking solutions that improve pedestrian safety & experience - Road diet (reduction of road width) - Pavements with accessibility for all ages and abilities - Safe and comfortable public transport stops - Visual comfort (reduction of advertisements & visual clutter) - Bicycle infrastructure as an integral part of street design - Greenery of high quality wherever possible in streets
Codex of streets
Public spaces (other than streets) in Moscow are most often neglected, badly maintained and used for nothing more than parking and waste collection. Therefore, the second set of design standards deals with Courtyards, Parks, Waterfronts, Squares and metro entrance zones. Main issues that we addressed were; - Improved accessibility and reach of public spaces - Functional quality and programming of areas - Maintenance as an important design criterion - All year round use (winter activities!)
