Forsyth County now has a tethering ordinance! Thanks go to Commissioners Debra Conrad, Dave Plyer, Everett Witherspoon, Bill Whiteheart and Robert Marshall for their humane vote and for ignoring the last-minute misinformation campaign by some opponents. Thanks to everyone who took the time to contact the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners: A clear message was sent that we expect our elected officials to listen to us and our many voting supporters. It was also made it clear that when fellow animal-lovers work together we can make a difference! Be sure to email or telephone a thank-you to Commissioners Plyer, Witherspoon, Conrad, Whiteheart and Marshall and also let them know that their compassionate vote will be remembered at election time. Conversely, send an email to Commissioners Linville and Whisenhunt and let them know that their "no" vote was a big disappointment and that they also will not be forgotten. It’s easy, just go to: http://www.forsyth.cc/commissioner We are certainly pleased that we now have a tethering ordinance, however, the final version lacks the precise wording that we would have preferred. The original ordinance outline recommended by the County Animal Control Advisory Board contained a clear ban on the 24/7 chaining of dogs, with reasonable exceptions for short-term restraint and special events. The ordinance passed is not clearly worded and prohibits chaining if it results in harm to the dog. This could include such things as unduly restricting movement, subjecting the dog to harassment, attacks by people or other animals, choking or strangling, the dog being confined it its own waste, failure to protect a female dog from unintentional breeding, and so forth. It is our opinion that it is almost if not completely impossible to chain a dog 24/7 and comply with all of these strict conditions. We have communicated our concerns to the county and stated that we will be monitoring implementation very closely to see if the ordinance provides the results that we have all come to expect and that far too many chained dogs desperately need. If not, we are prepared to pursue any needed ordinance amendments. The new tethering ordinance can be read at: www.forsyth.cc/animalcontrol Fur-Ever Friends, Forsyth Humane Society, Unchainforsyth.org, County Animal Control and others are ramping up a community education program. During the ordinance’s two-year warning and education phase, we will be spreading the word not just about the need to unchain dogs, but on proper pet care, the benefits of spay/neuter and so on. Hopefully by the enforcement implementation date in late 2013 many residents will have voluntarily freed their chained dogs. Fur-Ever Friends and Forsyth Humane Society are accepting donations for their “fence fund” that provides the materials needed for our volunteer fence-building crews. Donations up to a maximum of $15,000 are being matched by these two groups. Man’s Best Friend Becomes One Little Girl’s Life Saver For most of us, dogs are an optional companion, something that we could live without, but because they make our lives whole, we become dog owners and soon they have us wrapped around their paw. It is the best feeling to have that unconditional love, at all times, by your side, but what if that great companion was also a life saver? For one little girl, Marley Brown, 7 years old of Virginia Beach, VA the decision that she and her family have made to add a new puppy, Rylie Ann, to their family is much more than a choice for unconditional love it is a necessity. “Marley has Type 1 Diabetes and even though she has an insulin pump, her blood sugar has roller coaster fluctuations, leading to constant testing, up to 10 times a day, including throughout the night. Having a diabetes alert dog that is by Marley’s side day and night, would allow our family the peace of mind that we haven’t had since Marley’s diagnosis 3 years ago. I have to set an alarm every 2 hours at night to get up and check her blood sugar levels. As a wife, mom of two and a full time kindergarten teacher, I can’t imagine what having a full night’s sleep would be like. I am so looking forward to the changes that will come with Rylie Ann’s joining our family,” said Kami Brown, Marley’s mom.
One Very Special Dog for One Very Special Little Girl Medic alert dogs are not a new phenomenon. We all have seen service dogs for the blind or people with other medical issues, but a dog that can detect a drop or rise in blood sugar 20-45 minutes before it occurs or registers on a glucose meter? “After much research, I learned of the group Diabetic Alert Dogs by Warren Retrievers. I got in touch with the owner, Dan Warren and we now have Rylie Ann, a 4 month old chocolate lab retriever, trained to detect when Marley’s blood sugar levels fluctuate,” stated Kami Brown. Rylie Ann’s journey to the Brown family started at birth. Dan Warren and his team of dedicated trainers began working with the Browns conducting interviews and assessments with the family to make sure the right puppy was placed with her. “Once the right puppy is selected for the family after an assessment of personality and temperament, they are enrolled in a Fast Start training program. The training continues in the home teaching the puppy to alert the diabetic or family members to changing blood sugar levels, along with learning how to access the refrigerator for medications, juices etc. Puppies are also taught to dial 911 on a special device with a pre-recorded message. Training continues for 18-24 months with the family and a trainer working together,” said Dan Warren. Financing and fundraising opportunities are available through Guardian Angel Service Dogs—Warren Retriever’s philanthropic arm—so that no family is ever turned away for financial, age, geography or other reasons. Guardian Angel is the only organization to provide medical alert dogs across the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
A New Life Ahead As Kami Brown looks to her daughter Marley’s future, she hopes that the addition of Rylie Ann will bring independence for Marley. “As Marley and Rylie Ann become a team, I hope that Marley can be much more independent and have as normal as a life as she can. William T. “Bill” Schatzman was elected as Sheriff of Forsyth County in 2002 and has been working hard at making our community a better and safer place to live ever since. His law enforcement career began in 1970 when he was hired by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover as a Special Agent and assigned him to the Washington, D.C., field office. During his 24 year FBI career, he was the FBI Police Training Coordinator for North Carolina, responsible for the training of state and local law enforcement. He coordinated law enforcement attending the FBI National Academy and the FBI National Executive Institute. He has worked throughout the United States and Europe. For the 16 years prior to his retirement, he worked in the Greensboro/Winston-Salem FBI office where he was assigned to investigate violations of federal law. Schatzman retired from the FBI in 1994 and ran his own security and investigation service. Sheriff Schatzman takes great pride in the performance of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. His proudest accomplishments have to do with the quality of employees that the Sheriff’s Office attracts and hires and the training equipment with which they are provided. The Law Enforcement Accreditation through CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) and Forensic Laboratory Accreditation through ASCLD (American Society of Crime Lab Directors) are programs that he is especially proud of. Sheriff Schatzman’s future goals are to continue to meet the challenges of public safety in Forsyth County effectively and efficiently with the resources he is provided. On a more personal note, the Sheriff shares his home with three felines (talking about being outnumbered), Mr. Fluffers, a six year old Norwegian Forest Cat who is absolutely too beautiful to be a “he” and two Applehead Siamese Cats, fifteen year old Mikko and thirteen year old Kikko.
Meet the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office K9’s and their Handlers The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has a total of ten officer/K9 teams: Two bomb detection teams, one narcotics team and seven patrol/apprehension/search teams. These teams are extremely dedicated to their work and a great asset to our community. If needed, they can search for fugitives and missing persons. The K9 officers/handlers go through five weeks (200 hours) of initial K9 training school. Training is held at K2 Solution in Ellerbe, NC. There is a mandated four hour block of training per week to keep K9 handlers certification.The K9 Units handle a variety of cases including: Apprehension, Bomb Detection, Narcotics Detection, Article Searches and Tracking. Other agencies ask for their help in creating their K9 units and request their assistance in ongoing training and deployment of their K9 Units as well as help with their investigations. The FCSO offers many crime prevention programs such as Community Watch, Youth & Child Safety Programs (including Fatal Vision, Drug & Gang Awareness, School Safety, Child Abduction Prevention, GunSafe®, Bicycle and Fingerprinting programs. One of the FCSO K-9 Handlers, Cpl. L. Koontz (at the time Deputy), received officer of the year for his work with a local student who adopted a dog from the animal shelter. Deputy Koontz formed a friendship with a North Davidson High School senior and agreed to assist him with his senior project. The project chosen was an in depth look at the training and daily duties of a law enforcement K9 Officer. Deputy Koontz helped the student select the proper dog in which to train with. An animal from a local shelter was adopted and the training began. The high school student trained regularly with Deputy Koontz and other members of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. Because of the dedication of Deputy Koontz and other Officers, the student now has a great desire to continue in the field of Law Enforcement. He has applied and been accepted into a Criminal Justice Program. This commitment to the public reflects well upon Deputy Koontz and the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Koontz and his K-9 partner, Hero have been credited with the discovery of large sums of illegal drugs and money. In addition to the excellent job that Deputy Koontz does, he has also displayed compassion to help young people in the community. Deputy J. l. Koontz has served with the Sheriff’s Office for 7 years. He is currently assigned to the Field Services Division and serves as a K-9 Officer. Congratulations Deputy Koontz!

The Forsyth County Department of Animal Control... Volunteer your time to help the animals in their care. The Forsyth County Department of Animal Control depends on the support of our community. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available and the department welcomes your involvement. The following programs are ways in which you can become involved in helping the animals and staff at the shelter: Animal Care helps provide a clean, safe environment for the animals. Cleaning cages, walking dogs, playing with the cats and socializing them is a big part of this program. There is also basic training through the SPOT (Shelter Pet Obedience Training) program. Adoption Assistance is a great way to spend your free time by helping a shelter pet find the perfect forever home it deserves. Greeting the public and directing visitors around the shelter, answering questions and assisting them with visitations with the animals are just a few ways you can aid in the adoption process. Neighborhood Canvassing involves assisting the Animal Control Officers by going door to door, promoting spay and neuter, educating the public about licensing requirements, the county code and distributing literature. The Houses for Hounds program needs volunteers to assist in the pickup and delivery of dog houses to needy homes in Forsyth County. AniMeals is a program that offers free pet food for dogs and cats of elderly, disabled or low income residents of Forsyth County. Community Care consists of a team that oversees the Animal Control Department’s participation in community events. Safe Haven, a foster care program, provides transport and temporary shelter for animals whose owners are victims of domestic violence. The Almost Home program assists Forsyth County Animal Control with its adoption program and F.A.I.R. (Feline Assistance Initiatives Response) addresses feline issues related to the protection of the public and feline health and welfare throughout the county. L.E.A.F. (Let’s End Animal Fighting) is a campaign designed to provide the community with a positive way of dealing with our feelings regarding illegal animal fighting and cruelty. The County Animal Response Team (C.A.R.T.) Is responsible for implementing the animal response plan and Enhanced Patrol is a public safety program designed to increase animal control presence and visibility in and near neighborhoods, parks and schools to act as a deterrent to violations of the animal control ordinance.
Special events take place throughout the year. Home for the Holidays is an annual adoption innitiative. Rabies Clinics are held in the spring and fall at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds in Winston-Salem. The annual Reynolda Village Pet Stroll takes place each summer and supports low income assistance programs. Orientations for volunteers 16 and older are held the third Tuesday of each month at the Animal Shelter. Orientation begins promptly at 6pm and lasts about an hour. It’s the first step to volunteering. If you would like to know more about what you can do to help the animals at the Forsyth County Animal Shelter, call 336.703.2467 and begin getting involved today. The animals need you and the shelter staff would certainly appreciate your help. Shelter Hours are: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from noon until 5pm. Tuesday and Thursday from noon until 7pm and the shelter is open on Sundays from 1pm until 4pm thanks to the volunteers from Furever Friends NC. The adoption fee for Dogs/Puppies is $107 and includes: Initial medical exam, initial deworming, initial heartworm screening, parvo/ distemper vaccination, rabies vaccination & tag, microchip ID & registration, mandatory spay or neuter & dog license. Nikki is a gorgeous 2 ½ year old female Pit Bull Terrier. Nikki’s owners brought her to the shelter due to financial reasons and she is already spayed, current on vaccinations, monthly heartworm prevention and is housetrained! Ingredients 1 cup of butter 2 large eggs, at room temperature 4 tablespoons of cocoa powder 1 teaspoon of salt 1 teaspoon of white wine vinegar 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups of sugar 2 1/2 cups of gluten-free flour blend 1 teaspoon of baking soda 1 1/4 cups of milk 2 tablespoons of red food coloring
2 teaspoons canola oil 1 clove garlic, minced 1 ½ cups corn kernels (from 3 ears) 1 large ripe mango (about 1 pound), peeled and diced 1 15-ounce or 19-ounce can black beans, rinsed 1/2 cup chopped red onion 1/2 cup diced red bell pepper 3 tablespoons lime juice 1 small canned chipotle pepper in adobo sauce, drained and chopped 1 1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon salt
DIRECTIONS
Cream cheese frosting 8 ounces of cream cheese, softened 3 3/4 cups of powdered sugar, sifted 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla

Preparation For the cupcakes:
Heat oil in a large iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook, stirring until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in corn and cook, stirring occasionally until browned, about 8 minutes. Transfer the corn mixture to a large bowl. Stir in mango, beans, onion, bell pepper, lime juice, chipotle, cilantro, cumin and salt. Delicious. You can make this recipe and refrigerate for up to 8 hours. Serve at room temperature.

Animal Rescue of Stokes County began in 2004 as a collaborative effort between two local citizens concerned about the homeless animals in Stokes County. Ran by volunteers from all walks of life, we are a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. We rely on the generosity of our community members by supporting our fundraising efforts, donating money and supplies to help take care of the animals in our care. We are not located at a specific location, we utilize a foster program which we feel is better for the animals in our care. What is the best diet for a diabetic dog? M.W. The best diets for diabetic dogs are good quality protein with low carbohydrate and grain content. As important as what you are feeding, is the presence of any other medical problems, proper weight and exercise. If a dog has any infection or other disease this can interfere with the insulin requirements. Likewise, if your dog is overweight this too can interfere with insulin absorption and regulation. Cat scratch disease is a disease caused by bartonella bacteria. It is believed to be transmitted by cat scratches and bites, or exposure to cat saliva. Cat Scratch Fever or Cat Scratch disease is caused by a bacteria known as Baronella. The disease is thought to be spread through the bite or scratch of a cat. Two to three weeks after exposure lymph nodes become swollen, fever, weakness and headaches can occur. If you have been bitten or scratched by a cat and experience any of these signs you should have a doctor examine you. The disease is usually not serious and typically responds quickly to antibiotics. In immunosuppressed patients the disease can become serious and should be addressed early to avoid complications. The good news is that dogs and cats are now living longer. And nothing contributes more to the long life of your pet than regular visits to your veterinarian. There’s a reason why regular visits are so important. Animals age faster than we do, so health problems can develop rapidly, especially in older animals. We want to quickly catch small problems before they become major medical conditions. Cats are naturally adept at hiding signs of illness. It is very important for annual testing. Along with a detailed medical history and thorough physical examination, your veterinarian will order diagnostic testing to establish baseline laboratory data. Our senior evaluation includes laboratory testing that can detect the onset of diseases and conditions early, when treatment and prevention are most effective. Using the information gained from this evaluation, your veterinarian will provide you with an assessment of your pet’s overall health and make any necessary recommendations. Your veterinarian will also look for arthritis, which is common in older animals, as well as dental disease, hormone problems (thyroid and diabetes), heart and kidney disorders and cancer which are very serious medical conditions. For the best care, your senior pet should be examined by your veterinarian every 6 months, which is similar to a time span of 2 to 3 years in people. Most animals are considered to be “senior” at 7 years of age. However, larger dogs tend to have a shorter life expectancy than their smaller counterparts, so health issues may occur sooner for them. If your dog is a large breed, you need to pay particular attention to your pet’s life stage and changing needs at an earlier age than you might expect from smaller breeds or cats. Hi! I’m Annie. My siblings and I were dumped out on the side of the road in Lewisville. Two nice ladies tried their best to help us. They set a trap for me because I was so afraid. You see, I had made a bed under a cedar tree in a big brush pile and I had mange, so I was really uncomfortable and scared. I have had many Vet. visits. I was given an exam, dewormed for hookworms, treated for fleas/ticks, vaccinated, tested (negative) for heartworm disease and I am on monthly heartworm prevention. My mange is gone now and I’m doing well on house-training. I’m almost a year old. I only weigh around 20 pounds and the Vet. doesn’t think I’ll get any bigger. The Vet. thinks I am an Australian Shepherd/Terrier mix. I am red and white and if I say so myself I’m “Simply Adorable!” I love to go for car rides too! I am a great gal who will make some lucky family a wonderful companion. I am spayed now also! I need a forever home or a temporary foster home.
