Before humans die, they write their last Will & Testament, give their home & all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I’d ask... To a poor and lonely stray I’d give: - My happy home. - My bowl & cozy bed, soft pillows and all my toys. - The lap, which I loved so much. - The hand that stroked my fur & the sweet voice which spoke my name. I’d Will to the sad, scared shelter dog, the place I had in my human’s heart, of which there seemed no bounds. So, when I die, please do not say, “I will never have a pet again, for the loss and pain is more than I can stand.” Instead, go find an unloved dog, one whose life has held no joy or hope and give MY place to HIM. This is the only thing I can give... The love I left behind. - Author Unknown

I don’t know about you, but I am so excited to see the trees and flowers blooming and everything turning green! It’s like God breathes a breath of fresh air into the world when Spring is here. Most of you are aware of the Puppy Mill raid in the town of Danbury in Stokes County. I want to personally thank everyone that helped the dogs and puppies that were rescued. From those involved in the raid itself to those who provided medical treatments, spaying and neutering, love and affection, those that searched for the perfect homes and especially to those who gave them their responsible, forever homes. I know from personal experience that one goes through a lot of emotions rescuing animals from situations such as this. It is heartbreaking to see where they come from but heartwarming to see them healthy and in a loving home. Thank you to the Hayes family for welcoming me into your beautiful home and sharing your story of Munson, Dooley and Georgia with me. I feel very blessed to know you and share our love for animals. Pet Supermarket is our Spotlight business for April/May. Thank you Pet Supermarket for your continued support of Wag! Magazine. I truly appreciate your generosity. Triangle Beagle Rescue, formed in 1999, is Meet Talley, a operated by a group of Beagle enthusiasts who want to see all homeless Beagles in the sweet 5 year old lifetime homes they deserve. All dogs are tri-color, short coat fostered and all donations are tax deductible.
female Beagle.
Talley is, 20 lbs., UTD on vaccines, successfully treated for heart worms and on monthly prevention, dewormed and house trained. Talley has been with Triangle Beagle Rescue since last July and we just don't understand why. She is one of the sweetest beagles we have ever rescued and she makes friends wherever she goes. She was recently moved to a new foster home to accommodate another dog who needed to be an only dog. Talley adjusted to her new home beautifully and quickly and became fast friends with her new foster siblings. Talley is very affectionate and loves attention. She is great with kids, other dogs or as an only dog. She can jog up to 4 miles/day, so if you are looking for a running partner Talley is the beagle for you! Because she is so affectionate, she would do best in a home where she is allowed on the furniture and can sleep with her family.
CGPR is a non-profit based out of Winston-Salem, NC that rescues and rehomes abandoned and abused Pyrs in North and South Carolina. We also serve as a resource for Pyr owners in our region. Find us on Facebook as Carolina Pyr Rescue or on the web at www.carolinapyrrescue.com. You can email us at general@carolinapyrrescue.com. Troy spent his first six years working as a livestock guardian, but when his family sold their farm and placed him in a new pasture, he decided it was time to retire and left his post. For this reason, we want to place him as a couch guardian. He's neutered, up-to-date on his shots, and on heartworm and flea preventative. Lucy is a 22 month old female Pyr. She is spayed, up-to-date on her shots, and on heartworm and flea preventative. She's house broken and create trained. For those who know and love the breed, she's an outstanding example of an alpha-female Pyr, and her ideal forever family will be some folks who are familiar and experienced with guardian breeds and who will commit to reinforcing the good manners she's learned in rescue. She has the softest coat and gives great hugs.

Kimberley Alboum has always had a special interest in puppy mills. As an account executive for a large insurance brokerage firm, she spent every spare minute she had working with French Bulldog Rescue and the Puppy Mill Awareness Day Organization. When the opportunity arose over two and a half years ago to work for the Humane Society of the United States, she grabbed it! Alboum knew that through the largest and most effective animal welfare group she would be able to help all animals and work to change policy in North Carolina. “Sometimes I still cannot believe that I get paid to do this job!” says Alboum. “My heart is with rescue response, but I really enjoy working on legislation. These two things go hand in hand.” Alboum shares her home with her two French Bulldogs, nine year old Hudson and Apple, who is five. Her office is located in Cary, NC but she travels throughout the state on a regular basis. Alboum has been able to provide grants and free training for our shelters and animal control departments in NC. She works closely with animal advocates across the state as well as commissioners and legislators on policy change. Alboum enjoys many rewarding aspects of her job and takes each one very seriously. It is easy to see that all of her hard work comes very naturally, from her heart. The HSUS works on all types of animal cruelty cases from puppy mills to wildlife issues. Nineteen animals are represented in their logo because they work for all animals, from cats to Alboum, pictured here with a whales. Alboum is most impressed with the animal advocates in North Carolina. “From the grassroots movement to our shelters, there are these amazing people that are working so hard to sickly puppy that was rescued improve the lives of animals” remarks Alboum. from the Stokes County People are becoming more aware of puppy mills and are educating others to adopt from local puppy mill raid in February. animal shelters, humane societies and legitimate rescue organizations. There are breed specific rescues for almost every breed. “Puppy mills are heartbreaking. It is very frustrating that these unscrupulous people running puppy mills are burdening our shelters, our responsible breeders and our rescue groups.” There are ways the general public can help. They can stop puppy mills by adopting from a shelter/rescue or finding a responsible breeder. A responsible breeder will ask questions about the home that the family will be providing for the puppy and ask for references. They will be excited about their dogs and will be willing to let potential adopters see the parents of the puppy and their living arrangements. They will be knowledgeable and concerned about the care that the puppy will receive and be willing to provide references of their own. The kennel will be clean and the dogs will look healthy and happy.” People that want to stop puppy mills should contact their legislators and ask them to please support a responsible bill to regulate commercial dog breeders. The HSUS is working hard to pass legislation and create solid policy that will put puppy mills out of business. Their Animal Rescue Team is top notch and is fighting this terrible industry across the country. To learn more about the Humane Society of the United States or how you can do your part to help animals and stop the horrible cycle of puppy mills, visit their website at: www.humanesociety.org or contact them at: The Humane Society of the United States 2100 L St., NW • Washington, D.C. 20037 Phone: 202-452-1100
The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest and most effective animal protection organization, backed by 11 million Americans. The HSUS helps animals by advocating for better laws to protect animals; conducting campaigns to reform industries; providing animal rescue and emergency response; investigating cases of animal cruelty; and caring for animals through their sanctuaries and wildlife rehabilitation centers, emergency shelters and clinics. The HSUS, Guilford County Animal Shelter, Stokes & Charlotte Humane Societies rescue dogs forced to breed at the Stokes County puppy mill known as “Dan River Bullies” operated by Willis and Lucille Mabe in Danbury, NC.

On February 3, 2012 officials from the Humane Society of the United States accompanied Stokes County Animal Control and the Stokes County Sheriff’s Department to a deplorable puppy mill in Danbury, NC to rescue various breeds of dogs. The private property located at 1560 Bob Mabe Road in Danbury, owned by Lucille and Willis Mabe imprisoned approximately 160 dogs and puppies that were suffering from many ailments and living in horrible conditions. The Humane Society of the United States had received a complaint from an informant, however, before they could even act, the Mabe’s dumped eleven dogs that were in very poor conditions at the Stokes County Animal Shelter in Germanton. “The Mabe’s had failed an AKC inspection and were apparently trying to get their numbers down” states Kimberly Alboum of the HSUS. Based on the report and the conditions of the dogs dumped at the shelter, a warrant was issued and action was taken. The French Bulldog that was forced “Once we were on the property, we realized it was a much larger situation than we to breed and live in a filthy cage, anticipated” says Alboum. Using the HSUS staff and volunteers along with the Guilford County Animal Shelter and the Stokes and Charlotte Humane Societies, the conditions of where the two puppies were born. the housing and animals were documented. The animals were then removed from their The two puppies enclosures and evaluated by a veterinarian on the scene. Over 25 people were involved in playing together helping these animals. It was a significant effort as there were electrical wires hanging at the Guilford around the property and many hazards for both the animals and the people trying to rescue County Animal them. Of the approximately 160 dogs were French Bulldogs, Shih-Tzu’s, English Bulldogs, Shelter after Boston Terriers and Chihuahua’s. “The animals were incredibly grateful to be out of their rehabilitation. enclosures. The ammonia levels were high and some enclosures were caked with feces. Many of the dogs were very scared but still very responsive to rescuers... it is as if they knew we were there to help them. We see this at every bust.” replies Alboum. Most enclosures had little protection from the elements and rats and mice were living in the dog housing. Many sharp wires were protruding through the cages and some of the dogs had surface wounds (both old and new) from running into them. Alboum described the living conditions as “deplorable” with “only filthy water bowls and food dumped on the ground” and said that it “was so sad to see the mother dogs with their babies on top of accumulated feces.” The scene is described as having several buildings on the poorly kept property. “Each one seemed worse than the other. There were a couple of sheds and long trailers. The floor and ceilings of the trailers were falling in. It was heartbreaking.” The dogs went to the Guilford County Animal Shelter, the SPCA of Wake County and the Charlotte Humane Society because the Stokes County Animal Shelter is extremely small and could not accommodate them. Guilford took the majority of the dogs and their staff has been dedicated to their recovery and placement into the loving homes they deserve. They were incredibly fortunate that a veterinarian donated spay/neuter and other surgeries for the dogs. The HSUS is working with their Placement Partners to provide them with grants for the medical care of the animals. Lucille and Willis Mabe were each charged with 27 counts of animal cruelty, but recently the Stokes County District Attorney, Ricky Bowman dropped the charges. “The owners took a plea deal.” replies Alboum “We are disappointed in the leniency of this case but we are pleased that the dogs have received the much needed medical care for the severe neglect that they endured.” The Mabe’s cannot breed or sell dogs for the next two years, the case will remain open and Stokes County Animal Control can inspect their property during that time. The case has brought public awareness to Stokes County. More people are reporting the abuse and neglect of animals. The Mabe’s operated “Dan River Bullies” for many years and unfortunately, hundreds of people purchased puppies, which kept them in business for so long. Purchasing a puppy mill puppy is NOT rescuing, in fact, it ensures that the mother will be bred again. You might see a cute puppy in a pet store, flea market or parking lot that pulls at your heart strings, but think about the parents of that puppy that will be forcibly bred over and over until the market for those puppies no longer exists. A puppy mill is a place where dogs are bred for profit with no regard for their health and well-being. By contrast, responsible breeders breed dogs for the health of the breeds they love and they ensure they end up in happy homes. Puppy millers sell to whomever has the money to buy the animals. There is a stigma associated with dog breeding in “puppy mill” states like NC and that is not fair to those that are working to breed healthy and well balanced dogs who make certain their puppies go into loving, responsible homes. Puppy mill operators are not only burdening our animal welfare organizations, but tax payers as well. A bill to regulate commercial breeders passed the Senate in 2009, but it died in the House after pressure from special interest groups. The Pork Council, Farm Bureau and the AKC (American Kennel Club) are all against regulating this industry. Alboum states, “One would think the AKC would be working with us to not only protect the dogs but also their (the AKC’s) responsible breeders, but this is not the case.” The simple fact is that as long as someone is willing to purchase a puppy from a puppy mill, the operators will keep their business going and continue to force a miserable and unhappy life upon the dogs. Please do not support those breeding for profit. Can you imagine being forced to live your entire life in a small wire cage with no human companionship or comfort and being forced to constantly breed and have litter after litter for someone’s profit? That is the life of a puppy mill dog and according to the HSUS, between 2 and 4 million puppy mill puppies are sold every year in the United States. So, lets all do our part to stop this cycle of misery! The burden of puppy mills is ours! Please contact your legislators and ask them to pass a responsible bill to regulate the commercial breeding industry. And for your next best friend, adopt from your local shelter, humane society, reputable rescue organization or find a responsible breeder.

A 1970’s Florida vacation turned into a multimillion dollar career for Ohio native Charles West, Jr. “Chuck”, a deputy for the Cuyahoga Sheriff’s Department in Cleveland was quite intrigued with Fort Lauderdale’s beauty. He loved the outdoors and boating, so he decided to move to sunny Florida. Since childhood, Chuck had a love for fish and aquariums and after his move, he decided to open his own pet supply store in 1974. “Pet Circus”, located in Oakland Park was supposed to be a second income for Chuck and his then-wife but what it turned out to be was much more than a second income. Chuck was putting in twelve hour days everyday for the first year and still woke up excited to go to work. He soon realized there was more opportunity out there, so he opened a second store and the business kept growing and growing. In 1986, he changed the name to Pet Supermarket and today has a total of 125 stores throughout FL, GA, NC, AL, KY, TN, CA, NV. Chuck takes pride in his dedicated staff of over 1,200 people and makes Pet Supermarket a “fun” place to work. Even in a down economy his business is thriving. He credits that due to the fact that people love their pets and continue to want to take good care of them. The company is currently third in national market share and had $200 million in revenue last year. Chuck is always looking for ways to improve his stores and is out scouting for new locations because he wants to stay on track with his goal of opening 20 new stores each year. He frequently visits other pet supply stores to see what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong, accompanied by his German Shepherd, Jax. Jax is always by Chuck’s side, “He goes everywhere I go.” replies Chuck. Pet Supermarket offers great customer service, top brands of premium pet foods (which they keep stocked) and over 8,000 quality pet care products, including toys, treats and supplies for dogs, cats, birds, fish and small animals. Of course, pets are always welcome in their stores. Their staff is friendly and always ready to help their customers. The stores are clean and offer such a great variety of supplies that you can always find what you’re looking for. They specialize in natural and holistic foods. In addition, Pet Supermarket works with area organizations to host adoption and related events for cats and dogs. Visit their website at www.PetSupermarket.com to find your nearest store location, in-store ads, their calendar of events and more! You can also find Pet Supermarket on Facebook®, Twitter® and YouTube®.

The Oaks offers much more than a typical nursing home with beautiful surroundings and a friendly and hard working staff. They have incorporated pet therapy in their facility for the past fourteen years, which is touching the lives of the people in their care. Abby, a sweet and loving eight year old Golden Retriever, with her tail wagging, walks down the hall and brings a smile to every face she encounters. Four years ago, Abby’s was brought to Dr. Mitch Spindel at Animal Ark Veterinary Hospital in Clemmons as a rescue. Dr. Spindel placed a call to Rhonda Lee, the Admissions and Marketing Director at The Oaks because he thought Abby would be a perfect canine resident for The Oaks. Rhonda, an LPN by trade, has been employed by The The Oaks, located across from Forsyth Medical Center in Oaks since it opened in 1989. She has brought in fourWinston-Salem offers more than short term rehabilitation, legged residents since 1998, after the staff researched a program that studied the positive impact that pets make on long term care, hospice and respite services. They have patients in nursing homes. Since that time, The Oaks has graciously opened their doors to Pet Therapy. been home to dogs, cats, rabbits and birds, which the patients absolutely love. Currently, Abby shares the facility with Bogey the cat. Residents pets are not allowed to live at The Oaks but they are more than welcome to visit. The staff at The Oaks understands the special bond between humans and animals. One resident, Mrs. Geraldine Riedl, has formed a great friendship with Abby. “Hi Ab - how are ya?” asks Reidl, as Abby enters her room and quickly gives her loving friend a lick on the hand. “She reminds me of a dog I had over seven years ago that I miss dearly,” says Reidl of Abby. “I couldn’t imagine being somewhere that didn’t have a dog or cat.” Many people living at The Oaks are able to bond with Abby and Bogey and reflect on their experiences with the beloved pets of their past. It is profoundly moving to see how Abby and Bogey are able to lift the spirits of those living there. They are warmed beyond words by the animals unconditional love and acceptance. Abby will celebrate her ninth birthday in April and a big party is planned by the staff. It’s easy to see that Jeanne Blackburn, the Office Manager’s Assistant is Abby’s best buddy. Abby will follow Jeanne anywhere. Each day, around 1:00 pm, Jeanne takes Abby for a walk around the neighborhood. “It’s good exercise for both of us” says Jeanne “and you can bet that if it is much past one in the afternoon, Abby is nudging my hand to let me know it’s time for our walk!” Abby makes her “treat train” rounds (as Jeanne calls it) each day, knowing exactly what time family members come to visit, with dog biscuits in hand for the Golden Retriever. Abby is a popular gal and has became a loyal friend to Mrs. Shirley McBride. They quickly bonded after McBride moved into the facility last November. Tuesday nights are a special treat for McBride and her fellow residents at The Oaks, as therapy dogs are brought in for the weekly Critter Cuddling Program. Residents also enjoy a large bird aviary, a beautiful outside courtyard (where Abby likes to sun bathe), a warm fireplace which was built by a resident’s family member and many flat screen televisions. Flat screens replaced bulletin boards throughout the halls and is a big hit with patients and residents. The nursing stations are open and decorated according to what the residents like. They are involved in about everything that goes on at The Oaks. A staff member, Felicia Pierce hand painted a mural of the four seasons which surrounds the dining area. The mural took about seven months to complete and the residents took part in deciding each aspect of it. Some of the volunteers at The Oaks, who are family members of past residents, still come seven days a week to share their time and talents by playing the piano, helping with meals and sharing in fellowship. The Oaks hopes to renovate in the near future to add a 2,000 square foot therapy gym. To say The Oaks isn’t your typical nursing home is an understatement. It is easy to see that people in their care are in a happy and loving environment. The staff takes pride in supporting the emotional needs of each patient and their families and they love seeing the hearts touched and spirits lifted by Abby and Bogey. The Oaks is located at 901 Bethesda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. You can visit their website at: www.libertyhealthcareandrehab.com/theoaks or on Facebook® or YouTube®. Stacking the Lasagna Start by preheating the oven to 350. Then put a little sauce on the bottom of the pan, and cover it with a layer of noodles. Spread the veggie mixture, more sauce and a layer of mozzarella cheese. Repeat until you get to the top layer of the lasagna. Then spread the last layer of sauce, and load up with the rest of the mozzarella cheese. Sprinkle grated parmesan over it. Cover the lasagna with aluminum foil, and bake for about 30 minutes.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Sauce 4 tablespoons butter 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 cups low-fat milk (or skim) ¼ cup parmesan cheese, grated 2 cups low-fat ricotta Filling: 1 medium onion, chopped ½ cup green pepper, chopped 1 ½ cup raw carrots, thinly sliced 1 packaged frozen broccoli, thawed 1 no-bake package lasagna noodles 8 ounces grated Mozzarella cheese Start by whipping the white sauce. First, take the butter, and melt it in a large saucepan. Then stir in the flour to make a paste, and add the milk. Continue to stir until the mixture begins to thicken. Add the Parmesan cheese and ricotta. Remove from heat, and set aside. Prepare the veggie filling: Sauté the onions and peppers in some olive oil. Next add in the carrots and broccoli. Sauté until the veggies become soft, and then remove from the heat.

I’m Tony, an adorable silver tabby male kitten. My birthday is about December 6, 2011. I am affectionate, sweet, and very playful. One of my favorite "toys" is an empty box where I hide so I can jump out and scare my foster sibs. I have been around dogs and little children. I just love everybody.

I’m Dusty, a playful, curious and gentle kitty (born Aug. 2011) who loves playing with my sister, Summer, Every morning, when my foster mom greets me, I purr like crazy because I am so happy for a playful new day and also because I look forward to breakfast. I am really happy I’m Summer, I was shy at first, but warmed that my foster mother took me up to be a devoted kitty (born Aug. 2011) in from a mildly feral cat who loves to kiss and purr. I also like to rub colony. It didn't take me long up against my human with my silky smooth to adapt to my human. fur. My foster mom took my brother Dusty and myself in from a mildly feral cat colony. My brother adapted quickly to our human and I just followed him. I love chasing my brother, my bell ball and shoe strings. Sometimes I am also very helpful around the house, especially cleanning the litter box. After playing, I like to sleep, on the couch, next to my foster mom. I would probably do best in a home without dogs or children.

Feed • Seed • Fertilizer • Farm and Home • Small Engine Repair Hi! I’m Annie. I was dumped out on the side of the road in Lewisville and I had a rough start in life, but it hasn’t affected me one bit! I am a GREAT dog! I have received all my Veterinary care. I was given an exam, dewormed for hookworms, treated for fleas/ticks, vaccinated, tested (negative) for heartworm disease and I am on monthly heartworm prevention and I am spayed. I’m a year old and even though we girls don’t like to tell our weight, I’ll say I’m in the mid-20’s and I’m full grown, so you see - I am the perfect weight, I’m gorgeous (if I say so myself!) and I am housetrained! I absolutely LOVE other dogs, so I would really like a great home with a canine companion. What more could you ask for? The Vet. thinks I am a Terrier/Pointer mix. I am red & white & I love to go for car rides too! I will make some lucky family a wonderful companion. If you would like to meet me please call (336)682-1311 or (336) 692-3888. Once you meet me, you’ll just love me! Thanks! Love, Annie

Lacey is a one year old female, pit bull terrier mix. All she wants in life is someone to play with her! She loves running, jumping, and bouncy balls. She’s good with other dogs her size and is learning how to play with dogs smaller than her. Shes very smart and already knows “sit” and lay “down”, “leave it" & is learning stay. She also likes to catch treats thrown in the air. Lacey is a curious dog who will follow you around to figure out what you are doing and why. However, when it’s time for some downtime, she will gladly warm your feet for you, snuggle with you and drift off to dream about the wonderful day you had together.

Myrtle Jane Webster May 22, 2007-February 28, 2012 The Webster family lost a very special doggie. Well, she wasn’t just a doggie, she was part of the family. Yesterday... was a tragic and devastating accident. Myrtle Jane, our four and a half year old Dachshund was running and playing in the yard innocently when she ran into a tomato cage lying on the ground and it impelled into her chest, hitting her heart and killing her instantly. The tomato cages were lying around from all the winds the other night.
DUCKY is one “lucky” Ducky! He is a 5 year old, 16 lb male "duck" with a “mellow-yellow” personality to match! Ducky is currently working on his crate and house training, since he had never lived indoors before. He is leash trained and enjoys his walks though. Ducky spooks easily so he will not be considered for a home with children. Ducky needs a calm home where he can enjoy a nurturing and loving environment.
Myrtle Jane leaves behind her Mom, Amanda and her Dad, John; a sister, Betsy Jane; her best doggie Dachshund friend, Lucie Jane; another doggie friend, Daisy May-Jane; her other sister, Katie Blakley and her husband Michael and their children, Parker and Chance. Myrtle Jane also leaves behind many family members and friends who loved her dearly and whom she loved. Myrtle Jane loved to play with toys and she loved to bark, run and love. She sure loved to bark and she had the most obnoxious bark (haha!) but I would do anything to hear it today! Myrtle could always brighten someones day and brought nothing but joy to the lives she came in contact with. Myrtle, you will forever be in our hearts and you will be missed daily. We love you so much and always will... our lives may go on, but you'll always remain in our hearts. We all love Mighty Myrt but know you are in heaven barking now with God! LYATD Myrtie Myrt!
are our names! We are Chihuahua mix sisters. We’re healthy little girls - we are current on all vaccines, dewormed, are on monthly heartworm prevention and we are already spayed. All we need now is a loving, forever home! Would that be your home? We can be adopted together or separately. We are around nine months old. Like all dogs, we just want someone to love, who will love us and take good care of us in return. We love to go for car rides and enjoy walks in the park! Serious inquiries only, call (336) 692-3888.
WARNING TO EVERYONE: TOMATO CAGES ARE GREAT FOR TOMATOES BUT ALSO CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS JUST LYING AROUND... THIS FREAK ACCIDENT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO ANYONE, PLEASE BE AWARE OF DANGEROUS THINGS (LIKE TOMATO CAGES) LYING AROUND. WHO WOULD HAVE EVER GUESSED THIS COULD HAPPEN? PLEASE BE AWARE - WE SHARE OUR HEARTBREAKING LOSS BECAUSE WE WOULDN’T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE!

HOUSE OF VACUUMS HP www.HOVUSA.com 1518 N. Main Street High Point, NC 27262
Lacey is a sweet 8 year old that is good with dogs, cats, and kids. She would be good for seniors and is apartment appropriate. While she seems to have no interest in toys, she will do anything for a treat. Lacey does take meds for joint pain and skin allergies. She loves to run around the backyard and goes on walks without a care in the world. This is one incredibly resilient and loving pup and she would do really well with a family with another laid back dog she can follow around. She is definitely a follower but will also hold her own if need be. She lets her foster brother know when he's being too rough and has no problem invading his personal space. She is a leaner and will push into you with her side or with her head to get as close as she can to enjoy your pats. And if you stop petting her too soon, she will wave at you until you start petting her again. Do you have that special quiet home for this beautiful girl? She's looking forward to meeting you. Please visit the GSRA website to read more about Lacey as well as other GSDs who are looking for their forever homes.

I know that certain foods and plants are toxic to pets. What other items in my home should I not allow my pets to come in contact with? T.S. Anything that would be considered unsafe if ingested by humans should be considered unsafe for animals. The problem arises from the indiscriminate eating habits of some animals. Common cleaners, especially those containing bleach should always be avoided. Electrical cords for obvious reasons, open flames like candles, foam stuffing in pillows or toys, tassels and strings can be enticing to cats. Clothes - especially socks and underwear, can be tantalizing to dogs. Be careful with pets that like to chew on painted or stained woodwork. The list of things that I have removed from animals stomachs over the past 17 years is quite impressive and dogs never cease to amaze me with what they are willing to eat.
What do you recommend for fleas/ticks and should I keep my pet on flea/tick prevention year round? P.D. There are many products available for flea and tick prevention both "over-the-counter" and prescription. I am not a fan of using topical insecticides if there are small children in the house or cats that like to groom. The only products that kill ticks are topical solutions, there are no effective oral medications, so read the label carefully for any warnings (many can be very toxic especially to cats). If you have never found a tick on your pet my advice is to just watch closely and only use a topical product if you find ticks. Fleas can now be effectively controlled with an oral medication that can prevent eggs from developing (Lufenuron found in Sentinel) or kill adult fleas with Spinosad (found in Comfortis or Trifexis). I do recommend year-round flea control but again recommend tick products only if ticks have been a problem.
Plants in your home and yard can be deadly if ingested. For a complete list go to www.petpoisonhelpline.com or call 1-800-213-6680. Consult your veterinarian before purchasing a flea product. Some products for dogs can be deadly if given to cats. Some products can’t be used on sick, debilitated or pregnant pets. Make sure when using rat, mouse, snail, slug, ant or roach baits that they are placed out of reach to your animals. Never give your pet any human medications before consulting your veterinarian. One extra strength acetaminophen tablet can be fatal to a cat. Keep all prescription and over the counter drugs out of reach as well, they can be deadly even in small doses. Several foods can be dangerous to your pet. These include fatty foods, onions, onion powder, chocolate, alcoholic beverages, yeast dough, coffee, tea, salt, macadamia and walnuts, hop used in home beer brewing, tomato and potato leaves and stems, rhubarb leaves, avocados, moldy or spoiled foods, raisins, grapes, peaches, apricot and cherry pits, apple and mustard seeds, and mushroom plants. Some other items are cigarettes, cigar, snuff, chewing tobacco, chewing gum, soaps, toothpaste, breath fresheners containing xylitol and sun block. Cleaning agents are another caution, some may only cause mild stomach upset, but others can cause severe burns of the tongue, mouth and stomach. Other household items such as mothballs, potpourri oils, pennies, play dough, fabric softener sheets, dishwashing detergents & batteries. Automotive products like gasoline, oil & antifreeze should be stored in areas that are inaccessible to your pets. As little as ONE TEASPOON OF ANTIFREEZE can be deadly to your cat; less than one tablespoon can be lethal to a 20-pound dog. If you feel that your pet has come in contact with any poisonous products, call your veterinarian immediately. www.petpoisonhelpline.com Pet Poison Help: 1-800-213-6680

David & Lida Hayes heard about the puppy mill raid on the news and were horrified by the footage they saw. They knew they could provide one of those dogs with a loving home, so they called the Guilford County Animal Shelter where the majority of the dogs were being cared for. They were informed of the proper steps on adopting and drove to Greensboro to complete an adoption application. They anxiously awaited a phone call. Lida even called the shelter several times to make sure their application wasn’t lost or misplaced. One afternoon the phone rang and at the other end of the line was Marsha Williams, the Director of the Guilford County Animal Shelter. Lida jumped for joy and started screaming as David, who was downstairs came up to see what was happening. Marsha informed them that a home evaluation would be done by Keely Greene and the couple were thrilled beyond words. The shelter wanted to ensure the dogs from the puppy mill would get the best homes possible for their second chance at life. Keely took part in the puppy mill raid and helped in getting “Susie’s Law” (based through the Guilford County Animal Shelter) passed and volunteered to help Marsha with home evaluations for the puppy mill dogs. When Keely came to meet David and Lida, they instantly connected. “It was as if we had known each other for years” says Keely. Keely was extremely impressed by the Hayes’ and their devotion to their two dogs, Georgia, a three year old English Bulldog and Dooley, a seven year old Bulldog mix. The Hayes’ adopted Dooley when he was around six months old. Dooley had been used as a bait dog (a puppy used in training fighting dogs) and today he still shows the scars of his past, but only physically, not at all in his mild and gentle character. “It was so sad, when Dooley first came into our home, he knew only to get water out of the gutter down spouts” says Lida, adoringly looking at Dooley. “He had been severely neglected and abused.” Georgia was purchased from a responsible breeder in Taylorsville. Her grandfather appeared in the movie “Leatherheads” with George Clooney. David Hayes attended the University of Georgia, hence “Georgia” named for the Georgia Bulldogs and “Georgia on my Mind”. Dooley was named after a coach at the university. With all this bulldog experience, they knew they could give one of the
puppy mill dogs all the love and care it would ever need. After the home visit, Keely reported back to Marsha at the shelter, “I know you have a lot of difficult decisions to make, because I’m sure there are more people wanting to adopt than there are dogs in this case, but if I were the one that had to make the decision, this couple would definitely get a dog.” It wasn’t long before David and Lida, along with others who passed the screenings to adopt were invited to Greensboro to interact with the puppy mill dogs. They all gathered in the Therapy Park at the shelter and had the chance to interact with the dogs for about half an hour before the crowd was taken to a room and were given the instructions that they were to draw a number and they would be able to choose the dog of their liking by order of what number they drew. “Lida’s the lucky one in the family so I wanted her to draw” says David. “And guess what she drew? Number two! We were thrilled!” David and Lida had bonded with a white and brown English Bulldog named “Caesar”. They fell in love with him and hoped that whoever drew number one had their eye on another dog. They were overjoyed when they were able to bring “Caesar” home. Of course “Caesar” had nothing to do with Georgia, so the new addition to the family was named Munson, after Mr. Larry Munson, “The Voice of the Georgia Bulldogs” who recently passed away. David recalled Munson’s first day in his new home. “He had no idea how to eat out of a bowl. He just stared at it. We kept trying to get him to eat and he just wouldn’t, he didn’t know what to do. Finally, I dumped the food onto the floor(as this is what was done to the puppy mill dogs when they were fed) and he immediately sucked it up like a vacuum. He didn’t know how to go up or down stairs, or anything. It was pitiful. He had a terrible ear infection and his feet were in awful shape due to sitting in his own urine and feces for so long.” Today, Munson is thriving. Now he eats out of his bowl and greets everyone he meets
like he is the happiest dog on the planet. David and Lida own S&L Painting, located in Winston-Salem and Sneeds Ferry and everyday, Georgia, Dooley and Munson are chauffeured to and from work with Lida in her VW convertible which is wrapped in the most adorable decor of paw prints, paint buckets and Georgia’s darling face that promotes their family owned business they began in 1986. The dogs also go for morning drives with David to the local coffee shop where each is greeted with a dog biscuit. “We have a lot of love to give our animals” says Lida, “Munson just makes you happy! To see him jump on the bed to snuggle, climb stairs, eat out of a bowl, things he has never been able to do before, it brings peace of mind. My dogs know my feelings, I can laugh with them or cry with them. It’s our life (the dogs) and this is what we enjoy.” It was such a pleasure to visit with the Hayes family and to see Munson living the good life. They enjoy life to the fullest, now Munson can too. This dog has brought many new friendships into our lives. Friendships that I feel will last a lifetime for all of us. To see this dog go from living in the most horrible circumstances to living life like he has now with David, Lida, Georgia and Dooley, “It’s just HAPPINESS!” says Keely.
