Lacey is a sweet 8 year old that is good with dogs, cats, and kids. She would be good for seniors and is apartment appropriate. While she seems to have no interest in toys, she will do anything for a treat. Lacey does take meds for joint pain and skin allergies. She loves to run around the backyard and goes on walks without a care in the world. This is one incredibly resilient and loving pup and she would do really well with a family with another laid back dog she can follow around. Please visit the GSRA website to read more about Lacey as well as other GSDs who are looking for their forever homes.

and sustaining support for disabled Veterans has become a very personal mission for David Cantara, founder of Carolina Patriot Rovers, Inc. David, a U.S. Army Veteran and professional dog trainer, has attended hundreds of funerals of our servicemen and women. Troubled by the fact that many soldiers who had survived combat, returned home and succumbed to Post David Cantara, Founder & Co-Chair Traumatic Stress Disorder with service dogs Kimberley & Ivy (PTSD), David was more than motivated to do something to help these men and women who are so near and dear to his heart. Recalling the tragic events of his own life, he reflected on the constant companions that provided him with the unconditional love and support through it all... his dogs. David had a strong yearning in his heart to provide this same unconditional love and support for our troops with conditions like PTSD. PTSD and other psychiatric and psychological disorders, although many times not visible to the human eye, are REAL. The wounds and scars of those suffering with these disorders are much deeper than we can imagine. In March of 2011, the Americans with Disabilities Act revised its definition of “service animal” to include Psychiatric Service Dogs. Many returning military personnel and veterans face a myriad of challenges including PTSD, depression, immobility and inactivity. Although there is no cure for PTSD, early identification and treatment of PTSD symptoms may lessen the severity of the condition and improve the overall quality of life for veterans suffering from this condition and for their families. While some veterans find themselves making a relatively easy transition to civilian life, many face a much more challenging path. Homelessness, crime, drugs and alcohol become commonplace for far too many. Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grimly estimates that veterans account for nearly 20% of the 30,000 suicides that occur in the United States each year. The VA’s own data indicate that an average of four to five veterans commit suicide each day. In May 2011, the Associated Press reported the suicide rate for all Veterans among all the US armed forces may actually be as high as 18 every day. (“18 Soldiers Commit,” 2011) The use of psychiatric service dogs to assist combat veterans on a 24-hour basis has shown considerable results in reintegrating our veterans back into their families and communities. The 2009 Military Health Research Forum held Aug. 31-Sept. 3 in Kansas City, MO, presented a study, “The Use of Psychiatric Service Dogs with Soldiers Who Have PTSD,” by Joan Esnayra, PhD, A survey of people using psychiatric service dogs indicates that 82 percent of those with a PTSD diagnosis reported a reduction in symptoms after being partnered with a trained dog.

10

Disabled Veterans Sgt. Keith Harrison with his service dog Elliott (far left) and Sgt. Jason Gregory with his service dog Fleet

Another 40 percent report that their use of medication decreased subsequent to a human-canine partnership. Many reported in hindsight that their dogs could sense oncoming episodes of mental illness, such as manic episodes and panic attacks, even before the patients themselves could perceive the change. Most reported improved family life, ability to take part in normal activities, reduced thoughts of suicide and in some cases, return to work. Combining his compassion for his fellow Veterans, his affection for dogs and great knowledge of canine behavior and training, David set into motion the creation of this non-profit, Patriot Rovers, that could provide the unconditional love and support that he knew would help our military heroes and reverse the troubling trend of Veteran suicides. Not only did he want to help these fellow Veterans, he wanted to help unfortunate dogs who were unwanted, neglected and abandoned. So he started rescuing dogs, using the Psychiatric Service Dog best practices within the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act. trained them using Psychiatric Service Dog best practices and certified them to become Psychiatric Service Dogs. In most circumstances, the dogs, usually Golden Retrievers or Golden Retriever mixes, come from animal shelters, humane societies, abandonment cases or are rescued from irresponsible breeders. Some dogs have been donated by soldiers being deployed to serve our country that have no one to care for their beloved canine companion. Each dog that is rescued and called to service through Carolina Patriot Rovers is named after a fallen soldier who was killed in service to our country, with permission of “Gold Star” families and the program honors these soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice by helping their wounded comrades cope with the unseen scars of war. This allows the grieving family to honor their loved one and see another soldier live an enhanced life because of their dog. The dogs train for ten months before being paired up with a disabled Veteran. The dog and the Veteran then train together for a minimum of 40 hrs. (one to six months depending on severity of TBI). During this most important bonding process, a permanent home for the dog and a lifetime companion for the Veteran are achieved, through home visits, education and specific training. Bonds that form between the soldier, dog and family provide relationships that continue to heal everyone involved. All dogs are spayed & neutered and receive complete veterinary care, a service dog vest and a one year supply of dog food is given to the soldier. Nearly 400 hours are invested in each dog and soldier - you can imagine the cost involved.

dogs offer many tasks for their Veteran, such as “brace”, “get help”, “lights”, “doors”, “pull”, “dress”, “retrieve”, “reverse” and much more. U.S. Army Sgt. Stephen Komorek served in Iraq from 2004-2006 and endured two traumatic brain injuries, back and knee injuries and suffers from PTSD, says of his service dog, “Gibby” (namesake of Sgt. Nicholas Gibbs, killed on December 6, 2006 in Iraq)... “He’s my boy, he gave me my life back and I don’t know what I would do without him. Before Carolina Patriot Rovers brought Gibby into my life, I didn’t even leave the house because I was so withdrawn. Because of him (Gibby) I am able go out in public.” The VA and WTB Ft. Bragg, NC refer soldiers from all branches of the military to Patriot Rovers. Additional recommendations are received from various sponsors or Veteran support groups. Patriot Rovers requires a thorough application, to be completed by the Veteran, and (DD214). Letters are obtained from their therapist and doctors, recommending the issuance of a Psychiatric Service Dog for the Veteran. Dogs and Veterans are paired according to what best fits their needs and personality. Patriot Rovers ensures their dogs will indeed be a positive force in the lives of these wartime heroes. Once a determination is made, the process begins to bring these men and women together with their dog. Additional Psychiatric Service Dog tasks include medical alert and response, tactile stimulation, alerting, interrupting, stabilizing, calming, waking, initiate activity, initiate interpersonal interaction, and the creation of personal space. Non-task functions of Psychiatric Service Dogs include providing a constant 24-hour reassuring, unconditional love and companionship. They also occupy the mind of the Veteran, helping direct their focus on something other than depression, or re-living horrible memories due to traumatic events experienced during deployment. The Veteran is required to train extensively alongside the dog before it is released into their care. The dogs are provided to our heroes free of charge. Patriot Rovers depends on donations to make this possible. The people of this awesome organization are some of the most dedicated, hard working people I have ever met. You can see the passion in their eyes for this great service that they do. You can hear it in their voices and you can clearly see it in the happy, well trained dogs in their program.

Lifetime ongoing support, opportunities for further training in dog care and training, regular therapeutic camaraderie building events and volunteer services are integral components of the Patriot Rovers Program. David Cantara knows the name and story behind every dog and their namesake. He has attended the funerals of the fallen soldiers and paid his respects to their families and continues the legacy of these soldiers through the service dogs to our disabled Veterans. He relates to their grief as only someone who has endured the loss of a child can do and he and his staff are committed to give back and enhance the lives of Veterans who have sacrificed so much for this great country that we live in. Kathy Bull, who comes from a strong military family background and has extensive non-profit experience, serves at the Executive Director of Patriot Rovers. This mission to help our Veterans is also near and dear to her heart. Operation Iraqi Freedom took a toll on so many of our servicemen and women. US Army Sgt. Jason Gregory served in Al Anbar, Iraq in 2006 and 2007. They also stayed in touch to see how she was doing. I can only say good things about Forsyth County Animal Control. It only took about two weeks of fostering before I realized I’d found my dog. Two years later, I have the most amazing, intelligent, well-behaved, loving dog I’ve ever owned. Despite all she endured in her first 2 years of life - she’s absolutely trustworthy and loyal. I named her Gabrielle, after Gabrielle the princess warrior from the Zena, Warrior Princess TV series. I thought it only fitting that she should be named after a strong, scrappy, female warrior, since she herself was a survivor. I call her Gabby for short.

About me... Born and raised in upstate New York, my love for nature and animals was nurtured by living on top of a mountain on a minifarm. Throughout the years, cats, dogs, horses, cows, goats, chickens, a squirrel and ducks were a huge part of my growing up. My father was an animal lover and farmer at heart. He had worked the fields with plow horses in his youth and had always dreamed of owning a farm. He had a small herd of dairy cattle started but the Korean War interfered with this dream. The cows were sold, and off to war he went. My mother, also an animal lover, was a dairy farmer’s daughter and carried on many farm traditions in the kitchen with awesome home cooking. There were no boxed cake mixes or prepared foods in her kitchen; everything was made from scratch. From the time I left home, there have been animals in my life. Numerous dogs and cats, tree frogs, anoles, and a beautiful 5-foot-long iguana, which I begrudgingly gave away in order to move to North Carolina.

If animals were a part of everyone’s life, especially during the growing up years, I believe there would be a lot less “ugly” in this world.

I am currently on the board of Humane Solution, an organization that holds rabies/microchip fundraisers in order to supplement spay/neuter certificates to pet owners. If we could control overpopulation, there would be no need for the animal shelters. It would be good to put them out of business! I’m sure they wouldn’t mind, either.

About Gabby... I was without a dog for about two weeks in my entire life. I didn’t like coming home to a dogless house - it was scary and an empty feeling. My son called me and told me about a dog he had found chained and starving to death behind a very “nice” house. A friend and I contacted these people and offered veterinary assistance, and to help or assist them with food. The next day I called them directly and left messages asking to buy the dog. They did not respond. This was during a cold spell in November so it was imperative that we get the dog out of that situation as quickly as possible. I knew if I didn’t act, her days would be numbered. A neighbor had shared with us that he had buried other dogs that were unfortunate enough to be owned by this family. I had no choice but to contact Animal Control. Knowing full well that the deck was stacked against this dog for survival at the shelter, I volunteered to foster the dog and take on its medical bills. Once we got her to the vet, my fears were realized - she was extremely heartworm positive and severely emaciated. Those two factors would have been her death sentence at the shelter. The staff at the shelter was incredibly helpful in getting her through the system and to a vet as quickly as possible.

About Moonlight... Moonlight Designs, Inc. was started in 2002, in upstate NY, as a part-time venture with my dream to one day make it a full-time business. The name “Moonlight” seemed appropriate since that’s what I was doing— moonlighting. In 2004, I moved to North Carolina, which is when I decided to put all my efforts into turning this dream into a reality. Early on, Moonlight Designs was fortunate to partner up with Forsyth Woman Magazine, then Forsyth Family Magazine. It has continued growing partnerships with other local publications, such as Sensible Shopper, Triad Biz, Forsyth Woman Engaged and I Do. Moonlight also has partnerships with publications in New York (LER) and Vermont. (MoneyWise) Along with magazines, Moonlight can produce any printed material from business cards and brochures right up to trade show displays. Please checkout our website at MoonlightDesignsNC.com. One of the nicest things about owning a business in Winston-Salem is getting to know the community and being able to give back. The longer I live here, the deeper my roots grow. I have come to know the people, the city and the community. I’m proud to call Winston-Salem my “home” now.

Hi there! I’m Wendy. I’m a female Chihuahua mix. I’m around ten months old, I weigh about 11 pounds and I’m a love bug! I am spayed, current on all vaccines, dewormed and I’m on monthly heartworm prevention. I love to cuddle and I am great with my seventy pound foster brother who is a Pit Bull. If you are interested in adopting me, please call (336) 692-3888. Serious inquiries only. Vet. reference, adoption fee & home visit required.

Won’t you please help me? I have an old injury (from when my sister and I were thrown out on the highway) and I need surgery on my knee. The surgery will cost $800 and I could really use some donations as I am a rescue and I’m looking for my forever home. There is a fund set up for me at Animal Ark Veterinary Hospital called “Wendy’s Fund”. If you could make a donation to help make my surgery possible, I sure would appreciate it! Donations may be made to: Animal Ark Veterinary Hospital “Wendy’s Fund” 3515 Lawrence St., Clemmons, NC 27012

Thanks for your kindness & generosity! Love, Wendy Solomon is a one year-old Shepherd/ Hound mix, neutered, current on vaccines, microchipped, crate trained, on heartworm/flea/tick preventatives. Her adoption fee is $150.

Davey is a two year-old Golden Retriever/Labrador mix, neutered, current on vaccines, microchipped, crate trained, on heartworm/flea/tick preventatives. Davey was saved from the shelter & is now just as happy as he looks. He's good with other dogs, is a great car rider & is good on a leash. His adoption fee is $150.

Presley is a 6 month-old Australian Shepherd/Husky mix, spayed, current on vaccines, microchipped, crated trained, house trained, on heartworm/flea/tick preventatives. This blue-eyed girl is very affectionate and great with kids. Presley would do well as an only dog or with other medium/large dogs, and needs a strong human pack leader. Her adoption fee is $150.

The mission of Ruff Love Rescue is to provide a safe haven for homeless, abused, neglected and/or abandoned dogs, regardless of breed, age or health status. We maintain information about reputable canine organizations and rescues, networking with as many of these as possible to place adoptable dogs in responsible, loving environments, either through foster care or whenever possible, forever homes. We use every pro-bono means at our disposal to raise public awareness about homeless animals and responsible pet care as well as to find homes for our dogs. Dogs who are not adopted will live out their lives at Ruff Love. All donations are tax deductible.

of God’s creatures, be it human or animal, can turn the worst tragedy imaginable into truimph. It’s about love, hope and most of all - forgiveness. In October of 2008, Donna Lawrence was brutally attacked by a starving dog, unwanted by its owner, that was chained to a tree in her neighbors yard. Donna was simply trying to provide the dog with much needed food and water. Because of the neglect he suffered from his owner, this dog paid the ultimate sacrifice. It took months for Donna to physically recover from the attack, but would she ever recover from the fear she now had for dogs? In less than a year after Donna’s attack, a puppy was found near death in a Greensboro, NC park. This puppy had been hidden away, suffering horribly for nearly two weeks from second- and third-degree burns over 60 percent of her body. This

The movie, directed by Jerry Rees (The Marrying Man, The Brave Little Toaster and many of your favorite Disney shorts) is being filmed locally in the Piedmont Triad with a home based production office in WinstonSalem. Casting for the movie was all through Altair Casting. Regional filming will continue through June 1st, with post-production until September 1st and a 2013 release. The main cast features the beautiful and talented actor Emmanuelle Vaugier (known for her popular role as Charlie Sheen’s ex-fiancé Mia on the award-winning CBS comedy ‘Two and a Half Men’) who portrays Donna Lawrence. Vaugier has also had recurring roles in ‘CSI NY, Human Target and Lost Girl’ as well as appearing in some of the ‘Saw’ movies. NC Native Burgess Jenkins, whose memorable performance in ‘Remember the Titans’ portrays Donna’s husband, Roy. Jenkins also appeared in lead rolls in ‘One Tree Hill, The Trial, Red Dirt Rising’ and many more. The lovely Andrea Powell assumes the role of Ramona, Donna’s

innocent little puppy had been severely beaten, resulting in a broken jaw and missing teeth. The burns were so severe that her ears were down to nubs. Her open and painful wounds were covered in more than 300 maggots. The puppy was taken in by the Guilford County Animal Shelter (who were determined to save this precious puppy and give her the chance at a life she deserved) and for months, she had to endure daily treatments for her burns, initially having to be anesthetized to survive the pain. The puppy, “Susie,” was fostered by a friend of Donna’s and when the these two (who both had so much fear to overcome) met, they developed a very special bond. You could say, they nurtured each other into forgiveness. Jon Provost, fondly known as “Timmy” in the original series of “Lassie” portrays Senator Don Vaughan. This movie, about love, hope and forgiveness will surely touch the hearts of everyone and I hope all animal lovers will contribute to its worthy cause... to bring awareness to animal cruelty and fight for change to strengthen the laws for animal abuse. All donations pay for post production: editing, sound, music, special effects and marketing to reach a national audience. Investors are welcome. Red, White and Blue Cake Prep Time: 20 min

Ingredients FILLING: 6 cups blueberries 2 tsp. grated lemon zest 2 tblsp. lemon juice 3/4 cup sugar 6 tblsp. all-purpose flour 1 unbaked pie crust (recipe below) plus extra dough CRUST: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 tsp. salt 3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter 4 or 5 tblsp. cold milk Extra flour, as needed, for rolling the dough Instructions For the crust: Place the flour and salt in the bowl of a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Cut the butter into slices with a dinner knife and scatter the pieces on top of the flour. Pulse the flour and butter until they are combined and the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Add the milk a tablespoon at a time, pulsing after each addition, until the dough sticks to itself when gently squeezed. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Use your hands to shape it into two balls, one twice as large as the other. Using extra flour as needed to prevent sticking, roll the larger ball to fit a 9- or 10-inch pie pan. Wrap the smaller piece of dough tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until ready to use. Makes a 9- or 10-inch pie crust, plus extra for a decorative top crust. Creating the filling and assembling the pie: Heat the oven to 375º F. Place the blueberries in a large bowl, and sprinkle with the lemon zest, lemon juice, flour, and sugar. Toss gently until the berries are evenly coated. Line a 9- or 10-inch pie pan with the rolled pie crust dough and crimp the edges. Pour the filling into the crust. Let your kids cut the extra dough into shapes with cookie cutters. Lay the shapes, touching one another, on top of the filling. Press any pieces that meet the sides of the crust into the edges. Place the pie pan on a foil-lined tray (to catch any spills) and bake in the lower third of the oven for 45 minutes or until the filling is bubbly around the edges and the crust is lightly browned. Serve hot, warm, or at room temperature. Serves 8.

Star-studded Blueberry Pie

Cook Time: 20 min

A festive cake for a red, white and blue holiday celebration... Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups cake flour 1 Tblsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 1 1/4 cups buttermilk 4 large egg whites 1 1/2 cups gran.white sugar 1 stick unsalted butter 1 tsp. vanilla extract Red and blue gel paste coloring Directions: 1. Center two racks in the oven and preheat oven to 350°F. Spray three 8 or 9inch round cake pans with nonstick spray. Add a spoonful of flour to each, shake it around and tap out the excess. 2. To Make Cake: Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Whisk together buttermilk and egg whites in a medium bowl. In a large separate, large bowl, use an electric mixer to blend together butter and sugar; beat at medium speed for a full 3 minutes, until the mixture is very light. Beat in the extract, then add one third of the flour mixture, still beating on medium speed. Beat in half of the buttermilk-egg mixture, then beat in half of the remaining dry ingredients until incorporated. Add the rest of the buttermilk and eggs, then add the last of the dry ingredients. Finally, give the batter a good 2 minute beating to ensure that it is thoroughly mixed and well aerated. Divide the batter evenly between three glass bowls. Color two of the bowls of batter- one dark red and one dark blue. Just add the color a little at a time until you reach the hue you'd like. Scoop each of the batters into their own prepared pan. 3. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes for 8-inch rounds (15 to 20 for 9-inch), or until the cakes have risen and are springy to the touch- a toothpick inserted into the centers should come out clean. Transfer cakes to cooling racks and cool for about 5 minutes, then run a knife around the sides of the cakes. Invert and cool to room temperature right side up on wire racks. When cooled, frost the cake as you would a 3-layer cake, frosting each layer before adding the next, and then covering the whole cake with frosting too. Wedding cake buttercream is the best frosting!

Tip: *Don't use liquid food coloring to dye the cake batter. You'll end up adding too much liquid to the mixture and it won't turn out great. Gel paste coloring can be found at baking supply stores or craft stores. It's concentrated, and it will give you the deep red and blue hues you're looking for in this cake. “Noah" is a 3 yr. old male beagle. He was found along with 2 other male beagles that had been abandoned on a rural bridge. He has been treated for heartworms and is now heartworm negative, up to date on all vaccinations, neutered & microchipped. Noah is the perfect lap dog, he loves to be held and loved on so if you are looking for that perfect "love bug", then he is the one for you! If you would like to meet Noah, please email us at: arsc2004@gmail.com.

I’m Jada, a wonderful and beautiful young lady who is learning to find love, comfort and trust in the kindness of new friends who will be calm and kind while I am getting to know them. I am also learning to make friends with my foster moms' cats. I am very well trained with my crate and house training manners. I know how to sit and stay when I am asked and I enjoy shaking hand and paw and giving a high five with my new friends. I enjoy a good time playing outside in the yard with my toys everyday and when I have enjoyed my exercise and playtime outdoors enough, I love to have some down time to relax with my friends. I would very much enjoy to be part of a new family that I can have fun with while outdoors and also spent quiet time with and will be calm, confident and kind in showing me that I am loved and safe.

Carolina Care Bullies is a 501(c)3 tax exempt nonprofit organization, comprised of multiple foster homes that exist throughout the state of North Carolina.

Cherry, is a sweet pretty girl with the most beautiful amber brown eyes you have ever seen, who cares more about human attention and affection than any treat you could possibly offer. She also loves to give hugs and kisses!! Cherry is happy, calm and easy to train due to her strong desire to please. She is already crate trained, housebroken and sits on command. This girl has such a gentle spirit and hasn't met a stranger or anyone she doesn't love. She gets along with other dogs, cats and children. Cherry would be a great addition to ANY family!

Princess Peach is a "tortie tabby" -- aka "torbie" -female (spayed), about a year old. She was living with some outdoor cats but was getting beat-up by the other cats on a pretty regular basis. Now she's indoors and safe, but really wants a forever home. Come visit her at the AARF House during adoption fairs.

My dog has a bad habbit of licking. He licks me, himself, his dog bed... Is there any way to break him of this habbit that is driving me crazy? C.B. Licking can be an obsessive compulsive problem or possibly indicate some underlying medical or nutritional problem. Training him not to do this may take time and a whole family effort. You must correct him by telling him no and closing his mouth, command him by telling him what you want him to do like simply "sit" and finally praise him for sitting. By re-directing him this may help. Also, bitter apple is quite an unpleasant taste to most dogs so you may need to spray his favorite tasting places to further discourage him. If you are not making any headway here try contacting your Vet and scheduling an exam and possibly discussing some "calming" or anti-anxiety medicines. Good luck.

The flea population is made up of 50% eggs, 30% larva, 15% pupa, and 5% biting adults. The life cycle from egg to adult varies from two weeks to eight months. The female flea lays approximately 30 eggs a day. When the eggs are laid, they drop off where the pet sleeps or rests (carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, dog or cat boxes, kennels and sandboxes, etc.). When the eggs hatch, they turn into larvae, found indoors in floor cracks & crevices, along baseboards, under rug edges and furniture or beds. The larva are blind, avoid light, pass through three larval stages and take a week to months to develop. They feed off digested blood from adult flea feces, dead skin, hair, feathers, and other organic debris. The pupa mature to adulthood in a silken cocoon woven by the larva to which pet hair, carpet fiber, dust, grass cuttings and other debris adheres. In about 1 to 2 weeks, adult fleas emerge when they detect or feel vibration from pets, people movement, pressure, heat, noise, or carbon dioxide. Fleas can survive the winter in the larval or pupal stage and can become active with warm or moist temperatures. Optimum temperatures for the flea's life cycle are 70 F to 85 F and humidity is 70 %. Adult fleas cannot survive or lay eggs without a blood meal, but can hibernate from two months to one year without feeding as long as they do not emerge from their cocoons. Breaking the cycle with Insect Growth Regulator, not just killing the few adults (5%) is the secret to flea control. For an active flea infestation, you will need to treat all animals with a veterinary adulticide, such as Feline Advantage Multi, Feline Frontline Plus or Revolution for cats and Vectra for dogs, at least once a month. We also have Comfortis, Capstar and Sentinel that is given orally. In some cases, we recommend applying some of these products every two to three weeks. Consult your veterinarian first. If your home becomes infested, vacuum (with beater bar) every three days for four weeks. Spray the house: carpeted areas, door mats, cat-scratch towers, under the sofa cushions, pet bedding, hardwood floors (the cracks can harbor eggs and larva,) and automobile with a product that contains an Insect Growth Regulator, such as Ectokyl-IGR Area Spray. Repeat in two weeks, then again in three months. Re-application is necessary because the pupal stage is not affected by the sprays and re-emerges in several weeks. The adulticide component allows a quick knockdown of newly emerging adult fleas from their cocoons. Another form of control is the use of NEMATODES. Nematodes are natural microscopic parasites (worms) that infest & kill more than 250 different pest larvae. Ninety percent of all insects spend at least part of their life cycle in the soil. All types of Beneficial Nematodes are very simple to use. Just mix with water and apply to the infested area. It is best to apply it twice per season. The nematodes will infest and kill their prey within 24-48 hours, continuing to reproduce. The young will seek out new hosts to infest. Please go to www.naturalinsectcontrol.com for more information on Nematode products or www.animalarkvet.com for additional information concerning your pets.

Libby Bagby, a retired teacher who lives in Roaring Gap, and her rescued Plott Hound, Lucky, have visited many classrooms across the state to share their book "Lucky's Plott" and much more about NC history.

On a sunny winter’s day in January of 2002, under a beautiful Carolina blue sky, Libby Bagby was traveling home from her job in Mt. Airy, NC when she spotted an injured dog on the side of the road. Fortunately for this dog, Libby and her husband Rick happened to be major animal lovers. With the help from Rick and three other good Samaritans, the dog was taken to their veterinarian where they learned that he had two broken legs. He was also extremely dehydrated and his lungs had already filled with fluid, making it difficult for him to breathe. The Bagbys named him “Lucky” as his fate attested to. Little did anyone know then, how much the rescue of this dog would greatly change not only the lives of Libby and Rick Bagby, but also the lives of thousands of other adults and children throughout the great state of North Carolina. The dog spent time in the Bagby home (which already consisted of five other canines) healing and getting all of the tender loving care he needed from them. Libby had spent 27 years as an educator and was looking forward to retirement. She planned to travel and spend quiet hours reading and gardening. Her plans quickly changed after the rescue of this very lucky new dog in her life.

The heartwarming tale of her children’s book “Lucky’s Plott,” which portrays the NC state dog’s character traits and the importance of animal rescue, was only the beginning of this next journey in her life. Since 2007, Libby and Lucky have traveled all across the Tarheel state educating over 13,000 children and adults about the Plott Hound and NC history through their presentation, “Staying on Track with Lucky’s Plott.” Recently, Lucky and Libby have become the official Team Ambassador’s for Charlotte’s Major League Lacrosse team “The Hounds” (named for our state breed, the Plott) and appeared at their opening game on April 28, 2012. Visit www.luckysplott.com to order Libby’s book “Lucky’s Plott” or to learn more about their adventures and how you can schedule Lucky to appear at your local public or private school, museum or library. The book is also available on audio cd. Be sure to follow their scent along their interesting journey and learn more about our wonderful state dog, the Plott Hound.

At a follow-up vet visit, Libby learned that this sweet dog she had rescued was a Plott Hound, the state dog of North Carolina. Instead of spending her time reading, she began to write about this little-known breed of canine. She decided to make it her mission to spread the history of this handsome and fabulous breed, the Plott Hound.
