Welcome

Welcome to the Wairarapa Times-Age Sports Awards.

This day has been a long time in the making. Covid has wreaked havoc over the past two years on hosting an awards evening, but we have nally made it. Tonight, we celebrate a raft of achievements across a range of sporting codes. To the competitors, teams, coaches, administrators and volunteers, congratulations.

As a locally owned newspaper, we take our role of reporting sport seriously. We know how important sport is to you and strive to serve up a healthy dose of sport in every issue.

Six days a week, we recognise and celebrate local sport – the wins, the close calls, and the disappointment of losing. These Awards are about celebrating the successes of our region’s top sportspeople over the past two years.

The Awards also recognise the huge contributions made by sports administrators, clubs, and the hundreds of volunteers who give their time for free to make all this possible.

Together, with the tremendous support of local businesses, we are incredibly proud to celebrate local success on and o the eld again this year.

We congratulate all nalists. Look out for the winners in the Times-Age later in the week.

From being carried out of his skiff and being violently ill after finishing third in the 2008 Beijing singles scull to winning in a nail-biting photo finish victory at Rio in 2016, Mahe’s story is one of guts and sheer determination.

His never say die attitude is evident that it was only in 2021 that the 42-year-old called time on his glittering career after being overlooked for another crack at

Mahe is the winner of two Olympic gold medals, at London in 2012, and by millimetres at Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and five World Championships from 2005 to 2011.

He won the Halberg Supreme Award once in 2006, and five Halberg Sportsman of the Year Awards from 2006 to 2016.

A little known fact is that Mahe also represented New Zealand in canoe polo at age group level.

Wairarapa Times-Age proudly celebrating sporting excellence in our community

The Wairarapa Times-Age is thrilled to be celebrating the achievements of our top Wairarapa Sports people.

Organised by the Wairarapa Times-Age, the awards celebrate the achievements and dedication of Wairarapa’s sporting community.

Wairarapa has an incredibly rich sporting history for a small region, and recent achievements deserve their day in the sun just as much as their predecessors.

This year’s awards recognise achievements from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.

There are 15 categories covering o cials, teams, schools, volunteers and administrators.

Finalists of the 15 award

categories are determined by the nominations received by members of public.

The judges narrow down the nominations to select nalists for each category.

A combination of the public vote and judges vote determines the category winners. An independent judging panel of three judges were appointed. Each judge’s

vote is a quarter of the total vote and the public vote counted towards a quarter.

The winners of all 15 categories will automatically become nalists for the Supreme Award.

The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises the lifetime achievements of anyone involved in Wairarapa Sports.

A relatively new award category is the People’s Choice Award where Wairarapa residents have their direct say as to what nalist they believe should be recognised for their contribution to local sport.

The Awards would not be possible without the support from our sponsors, we value and thank you for your commitment to this event.

Giants overcame significant hurdles over the 2021-22 to win two Intercity championships. The men’s ‘Blue’ and ‘Red’ teams were hampered by defaults, cancellations, and covid-19 deferred games, severely restricting their playing time. The Blues went on to win the Premier Three top section championship, while the Red won the bottom section, after having started the season playing in the Hutt Valley Presidents Grade. Giants other teams also had some success in Hutt Valley competitions. The women made the Major B top five, and the under-15s qualified for their championship semi-finals.

People’s Choice Award

Blue Hansen 2020-2021 Award Recipient

Whether it is his beloved Pioneer Rugby Club, a Wairarapa-Bush representative game, netball, or touch, Blue Hanson is a familiar face around the sports elds and courts.

For more than 20 years, Blue has set up the Jeans Street grounds for Pioneer’s premier rugby home games. Then he’s on the side-lines, usually carrying the water bottles, or helping in any way that he can. If he isn’t tied up with the team, he’s often seen handing out sweets to supporters on the sidelines. And then at the end of the day, Blue is there

again, putting everything away for the next game.

During the Wai-Bush rep season, Blue is there again helping out with the water and anything else the team need doing.

On top of that, for many years, Blue has readied the Colombo Road netball courts for play every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Blue Hansen is your typical down-to-earth sort of bloke who just goes about getting everything organised so players can enjoy their game with no hassles.

New Zealand hockey international Dane Lett was proud and humbled to have won the Wairarapa Times-Age Supreme Sports Award for the second consecutive time.

“You don’t play team sports to try and go out and win individual awards, but it’s a good acknowledgement for a lot of hard work and I guess it’s more of a celebration for the people around me, who have helped me to do those things,” said Lett.

“I don’t particularly like being in the limelight or anything like that but it’s really good recognition and something I’m proud of.”

Lett took out the top gong for playing a pivotal role for the Black Sticks in the International Hockey Pro League and the successful Olympic qualifying series for the Tokyo Games, against South Korea in November 2019.
