Waldon Studio Architects was founded to serve and strengthen the community through design. We believe that architecture has the power to create positive change, enrich lives, and elevate purpose. Our work embraces the individualism of those we serve, reflecting their vision and culture. Every WSA project is different, revealing the unique nature of our clients’ ethos in context, tradition, neighborhood, climate, and character. Founded in 2003 by Ravi Waldon, we are a studio of 30 passionate creatives, dedicated to enhancing the lives of those we serve. [WHO WE ARE]
There are no “typical learning spaces WSA recognizes that there are no standard solutions for learning, as there is no standard student. As educational architects and planners, it is critical that we embrace the challenges of 21st Century learning. The world is in a state of change and learning environments must accommodate this transformation. At Waldon Studio Architects, we believe in a holistic, multifaceted approach. Engagement and teamwork amongst students and teachers is essential to the learning process. WSA embraces a like practice of collaboration and active listening. We support and adopt our clients’ visions by conducting research, asking questions, and providing a solution-based partnership. WSA values education. We are committed to the enhancement of learning opportunities across the company. Within WSA, all office staff serve on one of the following Knowledge Communities: Sustainability, Design, Project Management, Outreach, and Technical Standards. We seek to grow in our knowledge and understanding, not only of the design industry, but in our community and beyond.
[PHILOSOPHY]
Today’s learning environments come in many shapes and sizes WSA has in-depth experience designing educational specialty spaces for 21st century learning that require technical expertise for optimum performance. School environments must foster and encourage critical thinking, visual learning, communication development, scientific reasoning, creativity and active play.
We embrace innovation to create environments that foster the pillars of 21st century learning: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.
Changes in learning environments are inevitable. This means designing for flexibility and adaptability. Environments must be able to accommodate a range of uses and educational scenarios, including: portable technology; active, independent, or self-directed learning; maker spaces; and specialty courses. WSA practices human-centric design; we care about people. Understanding the purpose life cycle for the space and how to serve future users helps us determine the tools, proportion of space, and composition necessary to fulfill learning needs. We customize the design to accommodate the specific technological and ergonomic requirements of our school clients.
[APPROACH]
[SUSTAINABLE DESIGN]
Sustainable design can be attributed to all of our projects. WSA has in-depth experience with the USGBC LEED Certification process and expertise in sustainable and energy code jurisdictional requirements across Maryland, the District of Columbia, and beyond. However, regardless of the certifications required, WSA applies “green thinking,” and sustainable solutions to all of our projects. Whether we’re working on a renovation, addition, or new construction, our school buildings must be able to provide a safe environment while furnishing the community with a tool for environmental stewardship. Students, teachers, staff and community members belong in healthy facilities that encourage well-being and a connection with the environment.
[BIM–BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING]
Our team knows that in order to produce a great project, the design team must thoroughly cultivate and foster the vision. Building Information Modeling [BIM], laser scanning, 3D programming, fly-through animations and renderings are some of the many tools we use to develop a collaborative process between our client, consultants, designers and construction professionals.
