Since 2000, the Pantone Color Institute™ has provided insight on a key colour that is set to be prominent in the year ahead. Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute explains that “The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer.” Through extensive research and review of various factors (including new artists, fashion, popular travel destinations, and socioeconomic conditions), the Pantone team presents a colour that influences multiple industries – home furnishings being one of them. 2022 marks the first time an entirely new colour was created for the Colour of the Year, highlighting the importance of innovation and the need to adapt to our changing world. The periwinkle blue hue features a violet red undertone, adding a modern yet whimsical aesthetic when applied. Whether you are moving into or out of a new space, there are certain things to do to make things go as smoothly as possible. Think of the following tips as ‘moving etiquette’. • Let your neighbours at both ends know when to expect the movers to pull into your place. Ensure the movers park and unload to avoid blocking anyone else’s driveway or trespassing on other property.

• If you are booking a residential move, try and select 9 or 10 a.m. for your truck to arrive since people who work 9-to-5 are not home. You are less likely to cause them any inconvenience. • Book elevators in advance in the building you are leaving and the one you will be moving into so you have the benefit of arranging your time comfortably. Check to see if movers are restricted to using specific doors. • Have your pets cared for elsewhere. Moving means doors will be open for long periods, and animals wandering about can be dangerous for them and for the movers. • Most people wonder whether to tip movers. It is not compulsory, so it is totally up to you.

• Most moving companies are good about removing packing materials, crates, boxes, etc. when they leave. If anything is left behind, collect it yourself and dispose of it. • As items are moved out of rooms, sweep, mop and clean what you can. Some people hire cleaners before giving the key to the landlord or new owners. n my professional opinion, a well-designed home must meet two key criteria: the home (and everything in it) must be practical and aesthetically pleasing. These are two areas that I focus on when kicking off a new design project for my clients. Now, you might be thinking, “Just two criteria?” Don’t be fooled by your perceived simplicity of a number. A lot of planning goes into achieving fashion and function. One of them is scale. The rules of scale apply to everything in the space, in relation to the space itself. Furniture, light fixtures, art and accessories all have to work within the proportions of a room to achieve

the perfect fit. When everything is scaled to the space, your home will feel like a well-tailored suit. Pieces that are too large or too small can create visual awkwardness and physical inefficiencies. Here are three common victims of measuring missteps.

Area rugs don’t get the attention they deserve, and they’re certainly not a first focus for measureminded folks. Big mistake! Area rugs are important because they define “zones” and anchor everything in them. Oftentimes people will look at their space, complete with

furniture in place, and “estimate” the size of their rug requirements based on the empty area between the furnishings. The result is an ill-fitting rug that floats aimlessly between the sofa and chairs. When choosing the rightsized rug, the furnishings of your zone–be it a conversation area in the living room or a small reading nook in the bedroom–should be large enough to accommodate at least the front legs of the furniture of that “zone.” For example, in the sitting area this might include a sofa and some chairs, a coffee table, a side table and maybe an ottoman. Ensure the rug isn’t butting up against the walls, leaving a gap or a few inches to create a border.

Have you heard of “tablescaping?” Try arranging accessories and collections in odd numbers–threes, fives or sevens. Place the tallest piece at the centre and work your way out.

Light Fixtures

Light fixtures are often measured incorrectly, in more ways than one. When choosing a light fixture, ensure it is not too small. Remember, lighting should be a focal point, so choose something that stands out, both in terms of style and scale. Like area rugs, light fixtures help to define a living area, enhance a room’s function, and highlight its focal points. Choosing an appropriately sized fixture brings balance to the room–and yes, there’s simple a formula for that! Measure the length and width of the room in feet, add the two numbers and the result, expressed in inches, is the ideal size of your light fixture. For example, a room that is 10 ft. wide by 20 ft. long would be best

suited to a fixture that measures 30 inches in diameter. If you’re choosing a fixture to hang over a table, measure the table in inches and subtract 12, which gives you the ideal diameter for your chandelier or pendant. The second scale slip-up occurs when determining the height of suspension. As a general rule, the fixture should hang three ft. above a tabletop or six ft. from the floor.

Decor

Last but not least, art and accessories are often over- or underestimated, leaving them looking inadequate and ineffectual. In an effort to achieve a clean and uncluttered space, people often “go small” when it comes to their decor. The result is decor that falls short on size and visual effect. The secret to success is to be selective in your decor. Limit the number of pieces and ensure they’re big enough to make an impression.

Buyer Beware

When visiting a furniture showroom, be mindful that these spaces typically have high ceilings and vast floor area can be deceiving, so don’t trust yourself to “just eyeball it.” Advanced planning is essential, and a tape measure your best friend. Sketch out the room, making note of room dimensions, ceiling height, doorways, windows, focal points, and paths of traffic. While you’re at it, be sure to measure hallways, doorways, and elevators to ensure your furniture will fit through when it is delivered. Then, get some tape and delineate where your furniture will be placed and how big each piece should realistically be. Then, shop with measurements in hand. Work with a professional designer to ensure all your selections “measure up” in every regard. When it comes to your home, make no compromises.

• Don’t use toys or pillows in the crib, especially with young babies — your baby could suffocate. Never use an electric blanket for a child (could cause a fire). • Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub. Drowning can occur in seconds, and mere inches of water pose a risk. • Make sure your bathtub has a non-skid mat or pads to avoid slips. You can use a baby tub inside the bathtub — one with baby slings are especially helpful with infants. • Lock up all medications, alcoholic beverages, chemicals and cleaning products. Make sure matches and lighters are out

• Make sure your electrical outlets are covered. There are many kinds of outlet covers – choose the one that is right for you. • Confirm that you have reliable smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Make sure that the batteries are working. • Use doorknob covers on doors to non-childproofed areas (like the bathrooms and laundry room). Baby gates are also an effective solution for keeping kids in or out of a room.

More and more evidence suggests that our homes directly influence our moods, overall health and well-being, and this couldn’t be more accurate than in this “new normal” we continue to adapt to this new year. Our homes are our sanctuaries, refuges and our way to escape the chaotic world around us, and it’s essential we create spaces that feel peaceful and harmonious. Is it any surprise that in 2022 – our third year in a global pandemic — interior trends are slanting towards ways to make us feel less pressured and more emotionally relaxed? Here are some of my 56

favourite interior design trends for 2022 that focus on calm. Think of anything that feels warm and cosy, such as natureinspired surfaces (marble, stoneware and terracotta), accents such as cashmere throws and oversized pillows, vintage bulbs in your lighting fixtures, or incorporating shades of brown (chocolate, camels and caramels) into your soft furnishings, a kitchen backsplash or decorative accessories. Stay close to hues you would find in nature to create an environment that feels soothing and mimics the calming effect of the outdoors.

CREATE A MEDITATION NOOK

When it comes to maintaining a healthy sense of self, more and more people are going for an inside-out approach. A big part of that is incorporating meditation and mindfulness practice into their daily routines. Pre-pandemic, we may have looked at taking time out of our busy days to meditate as a luxury. Now it’s become a necessity: We need an outlet to relieve stress and develop coping mechanisms that preserve our mental health during one of the most trying times we have been through.


You can transform any room in your home into a peaceful mediation nook: Find a comfortable corner (ideally, near a window) and create a cosy sanctuary with soft floor pillows, a small carpet and a comfortable bench for sitting. Whether you meditate for three minutes or 30, carve out time in your day to focus on yourself outside of your daily distractions. Meditation works wonders in keeping us in the moment, and it can be effective in reducing our heart rates, cortisol levels and anxiety. CREATIVE WORK-FROMHOME SOLUTIONS

Home offices are a must these days, and I don’t see this need dying down anytime soon. With many people working from home

and possibly having the option to continue once this pandemic is over, we will need to be more creative with designing our spaces to accommodate our working from home lives. Many open-plan kitchens will reconfigure into alternative workspaces with shelves, spacesaving features and maximized corners. Kitchen nooks are the new workspace: They can work double duty as a workspace instead of the living room. CURVED FURNITURE

Curved furniture is massive for 2022, and as we continue to shift away from cold minimalism towards cosier interiors, our furniture is also moving towards softer and curvier lines. Organically-shaped furniture (no hard edges!) and round-edged

pieces will dominate, giving comfort and calm. SUSTAINABLE PIECES

People have begun to shop more sustainably, and I don’t expect that to end anytime soon. Vintage is such a strong storyteller, and it has the power to create a beautiful narrative in any room. Still, aside from the inherent intrigue and history in antique furniture and pieces, vintage also supports sustainability, which we should all commit to in an even more significant way this new year. Whether you commit to shopping locally or buy responsibly-sourced items, people are keen to stay Green as much as they can. By repurposing old, reworked or antique pieces, we reduce our footprint and create a warm environment.
