Whether you are moving into or out of a new space, there are certain things to do to make things go as smoothly as possible. Think of the following tips as ‘moving etiquette’.
• Let your neighbours at both ends know when to expect the movers to pull into your place. Ensure the movers park and unload to avoid blocking anyone else’s driveway or trespassing on other property.
• If you are booking a residential move, try and select 9 or 10 a.m. for your truck to arrive since people who work 9-to-5 are not home. You are less likely to cause them any inconvenience.
• Book elevators in advance in the building you are leaving and the one you will be moving into so you have the benefit of arranging your time comfortably. Check to see if movers are restricted to using specific doors.
• Have your pets cared for elsewhere. Moving means doors will be open for long periods, and animals wandering about can be dangerous for them and for the movers.
• Most people wonder whether to tip movers. It is not compulsory, so it is totally up to you.
• Most moving companies are good about removing packing materials, crates, boxes, etc. when they leave. If anything is left behind, collect it yourself and dispose of it.
• As items are moved out of rooms, sweep, mop and clean what you can. Some people hire cleaners before giving the key to the landlord or new owners.

Some of the world’s most revered designers and their most notable creations are rooted in Scandinavian design.
This distinct esthetic first showed up in the 1930s and rose to fame in the 1950s, becoming one of the most popular movements in contemporary design. Since then, the Scandi style has influenced everything from fashion and furniture to architecture and interior design – including my own.Inmy design work, I often lean into the Scandinavian esthetic, which delivers a nice balance of simplicity, contemporary style and function. More than just a style, one might even argue that it is truly a way of life that embraces the concepts of utility, simplicity and comfort as a lifestyle and indeed, a decorating style.
If you are looking for a timeless, classic look and easy living, then consider a trip to Scandinavia – if only by design! Here are some of the defining features of this cool, comfortable and characteristic look.
A focus on function
Function is one of the main guiding principles of the Scandinavian style, which favours essentials over excess virtually every time. This sense of practicality manifests itself through the use of clean lines, simple forms and slim profiles, which are paired with plenty of “white space” all around to create that essential breathing room for which this style is synonymous. Surfaces are clean, clutter-free and well-organized –and by organized, I mean out of sight entirely! This un-adornment
is also reflected in a minimal colour palette.
Neutral colours and materials
Simplicity is reflected in the preferred palette of neutral colours and materials inspired by nature. Light tones such as white, off-white, ivory, beige, taupe and gray are coupled with ample natural light and organic materials, predominantly blonde wood with leather and sheepskin commonly layered in, to bring a sense of ease and airiness to the home and the mind

what might otherwise be a very basic backdrop. In the meantime, colour can also find its way into a Scandi-style space, leaning toward gentle, organic, nature-inspired hues such as beloved botanical greens, warm greys, soft blues and warm browns.
Comfort and joy
Scandinavian-inspired spaces have a distinguishing cosiness known as Hygge, the concept of comfort as a state of mind. Texture is a key element in creating this style of comfort in your home by contributing tactile and visual qualities through the use of woven and braided materials, textured wallpapers, relief tiles and panels.
The same effect can also be achieved, or enhanced, through the use of patterns. Treat patterns as you would a traditional textural item and layer it into your decorating plan. Just be mindful not to compromise your minimalist colour palette when choosing your patterns.

Saint Boniface runs north as far as Mission Street following the Red River west along Tache Avenue and later Lyndale Drive. A large area with francophone residents, Saint Boniface extends east past Archibald Street to Plessis Road, reaching the Perimeter Highway.
The vibe in St. Boniface is clearly French-Canadian. From the Forks, it careens like canoe-carrying voyageurs to the next creek. Whether you’re in surgery at St. Boniface hospital or serving Sleeman’s at the Marion Hotel, you’re part of the living canvas here in the Montreal of the Metis.
Former residents counted French as their first language, but now most are more diverse and Englishspeaking. They may not look as rugged as the prairie pioneers of old but they celebrate this French catholic heritage just the same.
There are a large number of seniors in the population, low to middle income homes and typically, fewer of these households have children residing there so it can be sedate. St. Boniface has vibrant, young faces in the cultural cliques milling about. Close to downtown, life is lively yet local day and night.
St. Boniface is affordable for a middle income bracket, though it caters to high-end condo owners along the river. A small budget can live here resourcefully within reach of city Trafficservices.isconstant over the bridges, so there are several traffic lights and mildly congested routes.
The airport is not convenient but there are several bus routes and river walks for pedestrians. St. Boniface hospital dominates the landscape. Parks are plentiful, like Whittier or King George park, with three golf courses and trails throughout the area. There is St. Boniface City Hall, the Mint, St. Boniface Cathedral and the Université deSt.Saint-Boniface.Bonifaceisloved by those
who enjoy a bit of French culture, history and who like to live close to downtown. Shopping and services are ample. Health and business sectors thrive. Young families or those who
favour the suburbs may prefer more child-centred neighbourhoods. Apartments are abundant in St. Boniface. There are more suites for rent than there are homes for sale in this area. Newer developments include a street-side, four storey building with luxury condos on Tache, and contemporary open concept units on Provencher. Values for these cityscape condos are higher than average while modest, quality rentals of a similar style are more frequent farther east from downtown.

The name of Winnipeg’s Transcona neighbourhood is derived from the words Transcontinental and Strathcona, a reflection of the impact the railway and prominent Manitoban, Lord Strathcona, had on the area. While Transcona has expanded from its early days and railway roots, those roots have not been forgotten. Large railway-themed murals downtown and a steam locomotive displayed in Kiwanis Park celebrate the area’s history and the Transcona Historical Museum offers an abundance of local images and artifacts to peruse. Pleasant residential communities, established parks and trails, and a light industrial presence continue to attract new residents to this historic area.

Spring is here, and with it traditionally comes a new array of wonderfully stylish inspiring fabrics bursting with colours, textures and some of the most incredible patterns.Asadesigner, I look forward to the start of a new project. I enjoy pouring over fabric books gathering ideas and direction, and have been known to design an entire space from the inspiration of just one fabric. Fabric is tactile, and as such, the feel of lush
velvets, the beauty of some richly woven silks and the simplicity and texture of coarsely woven linen accompanied by rich, saturated colours is enough to inspire anyone to decorate. However, the question is: With all these fabrics and patterns to select from, how do you know what works together to achieve that “designer look” in your home?
To successfully mix patterns in your space, remember to vary the scale of the patterns from small

to large, as well as to maintain the same depth or magnitude of colour. By that, I mean if you’re working with primary colours, try not to incorporate fabrics that are pastels, as you will inevitably create an imbalance. Generally, if you start with blending a minimum of three fabric patterns, you shouldn’t have any problems.
The first pattern selection should be your most impactful one, so choose carefully and select a pattern that is larger scaled. The second pattern should be completely different, about half the scale of the first one and have some of the same colours incorporated throughout. For the third selection, it can be smaller scale and similar in pattern to either of the first two, with at least two to three of the same colours.
For example, if you have selected a large scale floral as your first pattern, the second could be a bold stripe or a geometric fretwork pattern, and then blend in another small scale floral for the third, or an alternative smaller geometric. Consider adding another pattern or two, or three, if you wish; maybe a small check, a dot is always favourable, or something in a solid small scale texture. If you’re more adventurous, consider throwing an animal print into the mix for a bit of fun.
When combining and layering patterns, it’s important to balance them throughout your space. The last thing you want is to create a situation where the heavier weight of patterns are all at one end of the room. They should be well proportioned with solids and any other visible patterns in your room, such as area rugs, wall coverings and fireplace surrounds, to provide equilibrium and an aesthetically pleasing look. Also, when pairing up your choices, it’s important to consider the “feel” of the fabrics you are selecting. Are they formal or more Dabblingcasual?inpattern blending
can be fun, and fabrics can make a bold statement in your home. Mixing fabrics like a pro is all about balance, layering and blending. When it’s done well, contrasting patterns and textures can elevate your space beyond the typical to a fresh, innovative and welcoming home. If there is one lesson every landlord wants residents to remember is to not let strangers into the building. Don’t open the front door for people you don’t know, don’t answer the intercom or Enterphone to unlock the lobby door. Notify your superintendent when you see canvassers going door-to-door. You can never be too cautious. We recommend that residents lock their doors even when they’re inside their apartment. It’s too easy for people to just
walk right in. It is amazing how many people walk into an apartment because they got off on the wrong floor or simply because they weren’t paying attention. It can be an innocent enough mistake but it can also be awkward and embarrassing.

To buy or to rent? You may not think it’s anybody’s plan, but being a lifetime renter is actually a great choice. It’s one that’s already a common experience in cities like New York, Miami, Boston and LA, where owning property is beyond most people’s income level and location is more important that homeownership. It’s also catching on with a generation that doesn’t want to be tied down with financial responsibility instead of the financial freedom to move and pursue different opportunities.
It’s hard to fathom for some people. The media is constantly making ownership the most desirable goal, but the reality is, home ownership isn’t for everyone. Conventional wisdom says buy if you can, especially with the current low interest rates, because you build equity. And if you’re young, you need a place to live and to house your children. When you sell, you’ll be able to afford a nicer home or make a profit and downsize. It all sounds great in theory, however, that theory assumes that you will buy at the best time and sell at the best time, thus maximizing your profits. Nor does it factor in the costs of inflation, renovations, maintenance and upkeep, property taxes and so on. In some cases, being a lifetime renter is the preferred option. Here are some scenarios where those who could afford to buy still opt to rent, and why.
Young professionals more interested in travel than yard work. Couples without children who travel a lot often prefer to ditch the gardening obligations, bills and headaches associated with owning a home. Footloose and fancy free, they would rather put their money into an investment portfolio. Let the landlord deal with utilities and upkeep. They’re off on adventures!
Entrepreneurs running a business. They frequently work long hours and struggle to find time for family and friends, never mind house repairs or tenants. Any extra funds they have are being put into building the business, therefore owning a home is not a priority.
People in careers that are planning to transition in the next three to five years. If they own a home they may be stuck selling during a down market but have little choice in the matter since it their time to move on. Being a renter makes it easier to pick up and leave when they need to, and practically speaking, their time and energy are focused on their careers.
Families with small children or caring for elderly family members may simply not have the time that home-owning requires. They are choosing the priority of family, and that is certainly a full-time job in and of itself. Giving a rent check and then forgetting about it for 30 days is infinitely easier to manage than the responsibility of home-owning. One of the added benefits of being a lifetime renter in provinces with rent control – your cost of living doesn’t rise at the same rate as inflation. If you keep the same apartment, your rent can only go up by small increments, after 10, 15, 20 years, you’ll find your rent will be greatly under the market rent values in a high-demand area. If you match any of these scenarios, you will likely enjoy being a lifetime renter.
