from the local editor

The heart of

the home

T

he increased time spent at home over the past two years has caused many homeowners to re-evaluate their living areas. One of the most common areas to receive attention is the kitchen. Replacing an outdated kitchen can do much to increase functionality and improve our well-being.

The kitchen is so much more than it used to be. It’s where we congregate with friends and family. It’s where the kids do their homework, art projects and where we play cards or pay the bills. In so many ways, the kitchen is the heart of the home. This has caused kitchen design to change dramatically. In the past, the kitchen was a small, purely utilitarian space that was shut away from the rest of the house. For the poor soul working in the kitchen, their time was lonely and removed from household activity. Not so anymore. Kitchens are now larger and open with other living areas. There is often a generous island with ample seating, which lends itself to conversation with everyone sharing the space. In addition to improved layout, kitchens today are much more efficient. If you haven’t seen what can be inserted into your cabinetry to maximize storage, then prepare to be amazed. Also, appliances are

much more efficient and easier to operate. These improvements have made life in the kitchen so much more comfortable and enjoyable. In this issue, we will take you inside some breathtaking kitchen renovations and will provide you with lots of ideas and inspiration for your own kitchen reno. This issue also features the entries for this year’s Manitoba Home Builders’ Association RenoMark Renovation Awards. Categories include basements, bathrooms, additions, whole house, outdoor structures, exteriors and of course, kitchens. Manitoba’s top renovators, designers and suppliers have been busy, and the Renovation Awards shine the spotlight on their incredible work. Allow yourself to be inspired and remember that you too can transform the heart of your home. Merlyn Minty editor, Winnipeg

MIST

We asked Sharon Grech, Benjamin Moore’s colour and design expert, about the hottest hues for kitchens in 2022. Here are her top three choices: 1. Greens are popular in kitchens as a way to bring nature inside, and certain greens also have a vintage vibe that is quite popular. October Mist CC-550 2. Deep navy and denim blues have been popular as cabinet colours for some time and I don’t see that changing any time soon. Mysterious AF-565 3. Small kitchen

ideas

Slammed for space in your kitchen? Don’t fret. “In a small space, it’s all about finding the balance between the perfect function and the meaningful beauty that surrounds you,” says Richard Ouellette of Les Ensembliers. R+D asked for his top three tips for working with a petite cooking space. 1. The best way to make sure your small space functions the way you want it to is to start with a well laid-out plan. There are some things that simply won’t work in a smaller kitchen. Make a list of your must-haves and work with a professional to ensure every inch is maximized. 2. Create zones in your space to give you different experiences and moments throughout your day. 3. Choosing the right appliances for your space and needs is critical. I love the JennAir Urban Living collection specifically for this reason. The Urban Living series appliances are built with the same exceptional luxury details, functions and quality as a regular-size appliance. Spring and summer are around the corner and we are ready to begin enjoying our outdoor spaces. We call it “living inside out” — making your outdoor spaces as fabulous as your indoors. In preparation for the great weather, below is a checklist to help create your outdoor entertaining oasis:

Design a fabulous outdoor kitchen!

Moonstone

Next, let’s talk tile… There are so many options available these days for tile, but it’s most important to make sure you always use a tile that is specifically made for exterior use. Opt for full-bodied colour porcelain tiles such as Ciot’s Moonstone Collection, available in a variety of colours and fascinating finishes and textures. Looking for something fun? Check out our large assortment of patterned porcelain tiles that are inspired by encaustic cement tiles. They are a great way to add style and charm to your exterior kitchen backsplash, while having the added benefit of porcelain’s durability with easy maintenance and no sealing required. Why not refresh your pool with a vibrant mosaic made for an outdoor application? A trim of mosaic along the edge of the pool is a great way to add a burst of colour to your space. It is also a good idea to consider a porcelain paver, such as Ciot’s Stoncrete and X-Rock Collections to complete your look and create a unique pattern in between your greenery.

KITCHEN UPDATES Looking to update your kitchen but don’t have the budget for a full reno? From swapping out the hardware to adding a hit of colour, our design experts share five ways to make your cooking space cool again. by SARA DUCK Photo: Jules Lee

Pop of colour “Incorporating a pop of colour in a cooking space adds personality and interest in an otherwise neutral room. Colourful lower cabinets ground the space in an open-concept kitchen. For a less permanent option, add a colourful runner, cookware or art to create a focal point in a kitchen.” – Designer Anne Duquet-Ford, ADF Interiors

Trees by MARK & BEN CULLEN

T

here is a well-known leadership theory that says selecting one word to be your focus for the year will create clarity, passion, power and lifechanging impact. With this in mind, our word for 2022 is: Trees. Trees are the world’s most advanced breathing machines, a miracle of nature that has not been matched for efficiency and economy by anything created by humankind. We need more of them. We have all experienced the many health benefits of getting out into nature or ‘forest bathing’ – breathing clean air, watching wildlife, birds and insects while we enjoy the shade and the quiet. But most importantly, trees efficiently store carbon emissions that help to fight our climate change emergency. While it has always been this way, the number of trees is in decline. We need to act fast to save these miracles of nature and ensure a safe future for people and the planet. Design trends are finding inspiration in nature, sustainability and bringing the outdoors, inside. Perhaps you’ve been considering a landscape project for your home, be it a balcony project or a more ambitious endeavour. We also have some expansion plans. On November 11, 2022, the last tree of the Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign will be planted, marking the completion of a project that has created living tributes to Canadians

who have or who are serving during times of conflict. Seven years and $12 million later, more than two million trees will be planted by this date. This initiative has inspired us to expand our mission through our new national charity, Canadian Trees for Life. Launched in 2021, with $2 million in seed funding from Natural Resources Canada through the federal government’s 2 Billion Trees Committment program, Trees for Life wants to continue the momentum started last year, right across Canada. We planted more than 270,000 trees in 2021, and we are aiming to double that number in 2022. Trees for Life’s primary objective is to mobilize community-based tree-planting initiatives across Canada. Using our insights and networks, Trees for Life will provide Canadian tree-planting organizations with the tools, resources, and horticultural trade networks to enable them to grow existing tree-planting initiatives, implement new ones, and educate their communities about the value of trees. If you haven’t got your one-word focus for the year, consider ‘trees’, for all the life-changing impact they bring.

Join us in assisting communities across Canada to dramatically increase their tree canopies:

K

itchen design is an everevolving process. It embraces functionality, balance, the perfect layout, smart storage solutions, proper lighting and ventilation and the right cabinetry choice, all while honouring style and

esthetics. Exceptional design is an aspiration for most kitchen designers, and just as important, are wheelchair accessible kitchens built with ADA compliance in mind. While ADA-compliant kitchens have advanced over the years, the reality is, there currently are more

kitchens that don’t require ADA compliance than those that do. But with the senior population projected to increase and aging in place a viable option, we anticipate a shift in the kitchen design industry toward even more advancements to cater to that need.

In an effort to address that demand, designing with accessibility in mind is becoming an important consideration in residential architecture and design. In addition, kitchen furniture and cabinet manufacturers and suppliers are introducing innovative and cutting-edge systems to support and accommodate this growth.

What makes a great accessible kitchen design?

Photo: Fisher paykal

An ideal layout should have a lot of maneuvering space and take into consideration all the needs of the user. You want to avoid areas that have cross routes and parallel surfaces, and limit travel distances between functional zones. Kitchen styles to consider are the single row (if you are limited for space), and L-shaped kitchen, a U-shaped kitchen, an L-shaped kitchen with an island, and a semi-island with at least 60 inches minimum of accessible space between counters and opposing sides.

FUNCTIONAL ZONES Functional zones facilitate the process of prepping and making meals. It includes countertops and food prep zones, food storage, tableware and cutlery storage, a clean-up area, as well as cooking zones. The goal is to eliminate any barriers that can interfere with being able to

THE PERFECT LAYOUT

comfortably work in the kitchen. Equally important, the design needs to consider the user’s motor skills in relation to their preferred movement if they are using a wheelchair, a walker or other mobility device. Whether right-handed or left-handed, they tend to use their dominant hand to use their device and the opposite hand to perform tasks such as opening drawers and moving things around.

ADAPTABILITY This kind of design involves rethinking how a kitchen functions. That means adjusting sink and countertop heights; installing induction countertops and motorized cabinet systems; addressing knee and toe guidelines, incorporating appliances with mobility enhancements such as pull-out dishwasher drawers; incorporating smart storage solutions; and installing flooring that is as flat as possible with few grade changes. While ADA compliance takes centre stage, you don’t need to compromise

in style and esthetics. Final finishes such as cabinetry, tile backsplash, and flooring still have a role to play in the design scheme. There is ample room to add character and texture, colour and to play with tones.

OPTIMAL LIGTING, VENTILATION + AUDIBILITY The perfect mixture of ambient, task and accent lighting enhances the kitchen design while providing functional capability and access within the space. For those with a level of hearing loss, audibility is key and can be addressed by installing timer buzzers and smoke alarms to assist the user. Depending on the electrical code of your region, installing switches and receptacles within the cabinets and drawers that also store appliance can provide efficient access and use. We are watching the development of accessible kitchen design and look forward to the innovative solutions that designers and architects come up with.

CREATE A WORKABLE HOME OFFICE, EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU DON’T HAVE THE SPACE

W

by BRODY ROBINSON

hether you’re new to working from home or have done it since the beginning of the pandemic, a home office has become a necessity for people just like you. Your office could currently be in your spare bedroom or in a small corner of your apartment; it doesn’t matter if you have a designated area or you are working on the kitchen table, now is an ideal time to update your space. At this year’s National Home Show: The Big One, you will find inspiration for your home office and other renovation and space-saving needs.

workable home office, even in the tightest of spaces.

The right location The ideal home office is one that is in a space where you won’t be distracted. Privacy is vital if you find yourself at home all day with your family. The right location is key, as is making sure your office has a door. Shutting out distractions and shutting in work allows you the needed disconnect between work and life. Each can be enjoyed, but make sure to keep them separate.

The right lighting When it comes to a home office, the right light is crucial. Natural light is the best – many famous authors try to situate themselves near a window to use natural light, encouraging creativity and increasing productivity. With the pandemic keeping so many of us indoors, try to let in some natural light and take in the outdoors while you work.

Ergonomic-friendly furniture “With the new normal of parents working from home, and online school for students, the home office needs an upgrade,” says Denise Hayward, show director for the National Home Show: The Big One. “You may think you don’t have the space for a home office – but think again!” To help you get inspired, here are some tips to help you create a

Whether it’s the kind of chair you buy, the height of your desk, or your computer setup, your home office should have ergonomic components. If a home office is becoming your new normal, don’t be afraid to splurge. Your back will thank you for it!

Crafty and convertible Make the most of a tight situation by using convertible furniture

and decor. Your space can be aesthetically pleasing and great for extra storage. Create an area that’s transformable enough to use for both work and everyday life, making it fit your needs. Get creative with desks that fold into walls, modular shelving or seats that function as storage boxes for a multi-purpose and multi-functional space.

Make it your own Your home office is still your office and should represent you. Choose a colour scheme that matches your overall aesthetic and you will look forward to sitting at your desk every day. Add those plants that bring some nature in or an animal print to spice up your space. This is your home office – make it your own with whatever makes you happy!

Check out the National Home Show: The Big One, April 15-24, 2022 at Toronto’s Enercare Centre for more ideas on how to transform your space and make your home office work for you. Clean lines, traditional flooring and hits

W

hen Jude Kamal and her design team at Sansa Interiors met with her clients, they quickly relized the builder-grade home needed a serious contemporary update. The 3,000-sq.-ft. home had clean lines but outdated interiors.

APRIL/MAY 2022

So, Kamal and her team quickly got to work brainstorming a fresh and modern design scheme. “We knew that functionality was their top concern, so we approached their house renovation in layers. We brought in materials and finishes that would complement the function of

the space, while still making it feel brand new; this enabled us to stay within budget,” says Kamal. With pandemic restrictions in full effect, it became a challenge for the design team to get permits, find specific finishes, and have crews into the house to complete the renovation.

“We had this

grand

vision of a massive custom sectional sofa that could seat all of our clients’ guests.”

“Even though the permits forced the project to be delayed by a month, we were still able to get creative in how we phased out the construction to keep the delays at a minimum,” says Kamal. “COVID-19 may have made the process more challenging, but it didn’t affect the quality of the end result.”

For this project, Kamal and her team drew inspiration from Moroccan architecture (since their clients appreciated its simplicity and organic feel) and modern design. They gutted the home’s inside while honouring the original architecture, which allowed the rooms to flow better.

43

In addition, they kept the colour palette neutral and introduced light wood tones and minimalist-inspired furniture to create a modern and streamlined home. In the kitchen, they introduced a bold cobalt blue, echoing a typical shade found in Moroccan architecture. A more modern, subtle blue was used in the laundry room. Kamal and her team got creative when designing the perfect space for their clients to entertain and throw large parties. “We had this grand vision of a massive custom sectional sofa that could seat all of our clients’ guests. We were told it was impossible to build what we were trying to achieve, but we refused to take no for an answer,” says Kamal.

Through various experiments with cardboard test models, the team was able to come up with a way to create a large enough sectional that was sturdy in build and could still fit through the door. “As a final touch, we worked closely with the millworker to detail this perfect custom sectional that would fit seamlessly into our clients’ space, using a fabric that was both easily cleaned and had a high thread count so it could withstand heavy use,” Kamal explains. By prioritizing crucial rooms, Kamal and her team were able to create a beautiful and functional family home for their clients. For more information, visit sansainteriors.com

COOKING UP

FIRE SAFETY IN THE KITCHEN

The kitchen is known as the heart of the home for a reason. It’s the place we gather to share meals and create memories every day. But did you know cooking is a leading cause of home fires and home-fire deaths?* Before the next time you turn on the oven, stove or other cooking appliance, make sure you follow these fire safety tips to keep your home and family protected *Council of Canadian Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners

ESTABLISH KID-SAFE ZONES Never leave cooking unattended and designate a “kidfree zone” of at least one metre around the stove and any area where hot food or drinks are being prepared. Create a space away from any kitchen appliances where kids can play freely while still being supervised. Make sure to keep knives and appliance cords away from edges for when young children do enter the kitchen.

CLEAN THE APPLIANCES Food splashes and splatters all the time, but don’t leave the mess. Keep your appliances clean of grease and food debris that could potentially catch flame, and don’t forget to clean your oven at least every three to six months.

AVOID POTENTIAL BURNS Cook on the back burners of the stove whenever possible and keep all pot and pan handles turned inward and away from the stove edge to avoid bumping them. To prevent hot food or steam from burning your skin, always stir and lift pan lids away from you. Keep oven mitts and potholders near the stove so you can quickly access them when needed and remember to place hot items in the centre of counters on non-slip placemats.

INSTALL AND TEST SMOKE ALARMS

KEEP A FIRE SUPPRESSANT ON HAND

The National Fire Protection Association recommends protecting your home by installing smoke alarms on every level, including the basement and inside every bedroom. Alarms should be tested every month and the batteries changed every six months. For convenient protection, upgrade to First Alert 10-year sealed battery alarms to eliminate battery replacements and late-night battery chirps for a decade. Even with 10-year alarms installed, it’s still important to regularly test them.

Always have a fire extinguishing device in a close and easily accessible location when cooking. Keeping one on hand is important but knowing how to use it makes all the difference when a fire does happen and every second counts. For an easy-to-use solution, the First Alert EZ Fire Spray features a lightweight spray-can design with no pins or levers – just point and spray.

Spruce up your space with spring-inspired floral wallpaper

N

o doubt you are familiar with the classic spring saying, “April showers, bring May flowers.” We hold on to the hope that by May, boom, everything will be in bloom, and suddenly all is right in our world. But don’t you wish you could capture that special spring feeling at home all year round? Besides your budding plant family, incorporating floral wallpaper will give you that springtime look, toute l’année. When choosing the right floral wallpaper, remember to select a motif that you won’t tire of. Although wallpaper has come a long way in terms of installation (hello, peel and stick!), it still takes time and effort to hang correctly. So, it’s a good idea to get a sample piece before you commit to an entire wall. And, speaking of walls, remember, less is more when working with florals. For example, you may (in a burst of spring fever) have a desire to wallpaper an entire room. While this is definitely a bold statement, you may find it overwhelming over time. Choosing to create one feature wall in a space will give you the look you are after without going over the top. Today you can find a variety of floral wallpaper to choose from in different styles and price points. Here are some of our favourites.

magine it: the smell of popcorn, the muted whispers and finally, brilliant images and striking sound filling the room as the movie starts. You can see yourself in the comfort of your living room, watching with friends and family and then suddenly, you wake up and realize it’s only a dream. You can turn that dream into a reality, and your living room into a home theatre, by including a state-of-the-art, large-screen TV from Hisense and discover a whole new way to watch watch movies, listen to music and play games. Hisense, one of the top five television brands in the world and the top-selling TV in China, has just released its L9G Series 4K Smart TriChroma Laser TV, and it’s the kind of cutting-edge technology you’ve been dreaming of. And, what’s really great about it is that it won’t matter where you decide to set it up. With its anti-glare technology, the sunlight from your floor-to-ceiling windows or the glow

from the lamps on an end table won’t interfere or degrade your viewing experience. The ALR screen blocks more than 85 per cent of glare, so all you see are crisp, bright images, no matter where you are in the room. “The L9G is an exceptional TV, with the most true-to-life images to be seen on a screen,” says Lindsay Takashima, vicepresident of sales, consumer electronics, from Hisense Canada. “The result is an image that projects images on your screen the way the director intended us to see them in a theatre-like way, but now, we can do it from the comfort of our home.” Seamlessly integrated into any decor, the TV allows you and your family to enjoy your individual activities, whether it’s intense gaming, watching sports, or getting absorbed in fast-paced action movies. The audio component is amazing, with speakers that push sound to every corner of the room, creating an unparalleled 3D audio experience — you really will think you’re in a movie theatre.

as the long-standing trend of the all-white kitchen finally fizzled out? I’ve recently seen some bolder trends bubbling up to the surface, as is the case in this dramatic kitchen design, which became a showpiece in a brand-new build that I recently undertook with my team. The

ask: A sophisticated space, anything but common white or neutral. Here’s where we went with it. We were starting from the ground up, and as a designer, that’s an ideal scenario, giving us complete flexibility with our design direction. As with all our projects, our clients – in this case a young professional couple with two young children – guided the concept

for the space. They were big on entertaining and, like the thoughtful hosts they were, they wanted their space to make a big splash. At the same time, their busy lives demanded practicality and integrated ease. We looked to high-contrast elements to make the statement our clients were hoping for. We maintained the light, contemporary

colour palette of a gentle hint of grey, and dressed it up with high-contrast black elements. These included the dark-veined marble countertops and backsplash, and an amazing dark obsidian range with chrome inserts that echoed the hue of the central island – an instant focal point and natural gathering place within this open-concept kitchen and living area. When planning your kitchen (and hopefully you’re working with a professional designer), choose your focal point first. Then, plan everything else around it. In most kitchens, the main focus is the range hood and island, which anchor the entire composition, and are organic attractions from both a style and function perspective. Choose something that stands out, but still aligns with the overall esthetic of the space. The kitchen island requires some special consideration, since it’s a central element, physically and in terms of use. Determine what the primary purpose of your island will be in your kitchen, since it can serve many different functions, from food preparation, dining and entertaining, to storage. Not only will this inform the specs, but it will affect other aspects of your kitchen as well. In this kitchen design, we maximized the island by satisfying all three. Our clients requested a raised breakfast bar to visually conceal the cooking clutter at counter level

tip: If your island is dark, try to use a lighter floor tile to create contrast and make the island “pop.”

when entertaining guests. This allows visitors to sit and still contribute to the conversation, removed from the mess. While we’re talking function, storage is a recurring theme in this kitchen design, and this was a high priority for us. The kitchen can get cluttered quickly with all the action it sees on a daily basis. To get ahead of the mess, we included features such as built-in spice racks, pull-out garbage bins, extradeep pots-and-pans drawers tucked underneath the cooktop, and a Lazy Susan in corner cabinets that maximize every inch while keeping kitchen essentials conveniently on hand. Last, but not least, lighting was an important consideration – natural and artificial. Aside from functional

necessity, lighting also creates ambience and highlights thoughtful features. Avoid blocking natural light that streams through windows and doorways, keeping sightlines open. Then, get creative with your lighting plan. Along with standard pot lights, add pendants, under- and in-cabinet lighting and even wall sconces, to add interest. In this kitchen, we went against traditional upper cabinets windowside for that very reason, opting instead for a simple stone ledge. A new kitchen is a big investment. Ensure you’re working with a professional designer so all your wants and needs are “baked in” the design plan.

tips & tricks

Deciding whom to

HIRE

Once you have interviewed renovators, checked their references and received written price quotes from those you are interested in hiring, it’s time to decide who will be doing your job Renovators should be allowed adequate time to prepare a bid for your project, and you must ensure that each renovator is working with the same plans and specifications. For all but the simplest projects, you should expect the renovator to present their bid in person, so that they can discuss each aspect with you an answer any question you may have.

1

Decide the importance of each aspect of your evaluation. While overall price is important, it is only one factor. Many homeowners who have successfully completed major home renovations speak about the importance of “peace of mind” – working with a renovator they trusted and felt confident in.

6

2 Once you have met with the renovators who are bidding on your job, you should review each set of bid documents carefully before deciding who to hire.

5

If you have a particularly strong sense of confidence in one of the renovators, they are probably your best choice, even if their price is not the lowest. In the end, you should choose the renovator based on your sense of the overall value they can provide to you.

Compare every aspect of their bids – the description of the work, specifications (materials and products), price and allowances, deposit and payment milestones, project schedule and any additional recommendations or ideas for your project.

Review the information you collected during and after your initial impressions of each renovator, and what their previous customers had to say about them.

On the following pages, readers will be able to see pictures and descriptions of the projects that have been entered in this years’ showcase. Entries are featured in seven different categories – Additions, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Whole House, Outdoor Structures, Exteriors and Basement. As one can see from the entrants appearing in this magazine, each project is spectacular. We are featuring 49 different projects by 10 outstanding MHBA RenoMark renovators; renovators who follow the highest professional standards in Canada. These projects will undoubtedly provide you with the direction you need to better pursue your renovation or, at the very least, start you thinking about what you could be doing to upgrade your home. This issue of RENO+DECOR is always very popular because readers see what has been done in other houses and then develop ideas of what could be in their home. These are real projects completed by professional renovators in homes in nearby neighbourhoods. Over the past two years, we have all had to spend much more time in our homes. This has led to home owners thinking about changes they could or should make around the house. Everybody has something that they have been longing to improve in their kitchen. Bathrooms

are being updated and modernized for comfort and practicality on a regular basis. Many of us love our neighbourhood and love our house, but we also need change. Colours and styles from 10 years ago need a refresh. Basements can be more functional and provide more living space. Cooking becomes more of a chore in a room that stifles creativity and innovation. An addition is like creating a whole new living space; a whole new lifestyle for your family without the hassles associated with moving. The award nominated renovation projects featured in this edition can provide a great example of what you can do to make your own home more functional and livable. If you’re considering a renovation, look to the standards and practices of a professional RenoMark renovator. The Code of Ethics and tips on what to look for when hiring a renovator can be found at the web site www. renomark.ca. The Manitoba Home Builders’ Association website is home to great tips, videos and full listing of our renovator members by visiting www.homebuilders.mb.ca and clicking the “Renovating your home?” button. Insist on the quality, professionalism and knowledge that come with a RenoMark renovator; your assurance of quality. Enjoy looking at all of the entrants in this year‘s RenoMark Renovators Awards and, of course, all of the articles featured in the magazine. Your next renovation project could be inspired by what you’ll see on the following pages.

DYNASTY BATHROOMS White, bright and airy was the intent for this renovation with use of extra lighting and large-scale high gloss Carrara tiles in the tub area and through to the flooring to compliment against light quartz countertops and custom taupe cabinetry.

KAT RENO Our clients wished to swap their 4 piece main bathroom for a guest bath, and add a shower to their ensuite. After reconfiguring the two spaces, we were able to create a luxurious spalike ensuite and stylish powder room, with fabulous results!

DE VRIES CONSTRUCTION A classic modern style bathroom that feels fresh and bright. By using matte black hardware to accent the crisp lines and with the use of light color, this bathroom presents a clean, clear reflection of our clients bathroom vision.

DE VRIES CONSTRUCTION This small basement bathroom was remodeled to fit our clients vision of a large spa like shower. Utilizing a very cramped space we were able to achieve an oversize shower and still maintain storage and functionality.

ALL CANADIAN RENOVATIONS This project was to create an accessible bathroom in an intake facility for people who are suffering with mental health issues. The existing bathroom design was not fulfilling their needs. A redesign with better features to accommodate new patients was needed.

HAMMERDOWN HOME RENOVATIONS This fresh and modern ensuite makes use of high contrast finishes for a dramatic effect. Heated tile floor along with great lighting, this bright room lets the matte black fixtures stand out without overpowering the space.

Is your kitchen

underwhelming?

I

t’s been a long cold winter in Manitoba, and we are all looking forward to enjoying the warmer months. Being cooped up indoors may have inspired you to bake and cook more often. If you find that your kitchen is not as functional as you want it to be, or lacks the sparkle that some trendy kitchens have, you may be starting to think that it’s time to renovate your kitchen. The kitchen is one of the most popular spaces in a house to renovate. While it seems like it should be fairly

straightforward, there are many things to consider before you bring out the sledgehammer to take your frustrations out on your existing cabinets and walls. What are the next steps and what do you need to consider? While budget seems like the most important item, you will also need to determine when you want to start your renovation, how long it will take and decide what you want in your dream kitchen. Oh, and don’t forget that you need to plan your kitchen layout and design!

Invest in your kitchen with research time While you don’t have to know what you want, it will benefit you to pop on the internet to do some research into kitchen designs. This can help you decide what kind of overall style you want to see in your new kitchen. If you are unsure, some popular styles to get you started include mid-century modern, contemporary, farmhouse, French country and traditional. Don’t forget to consider the architectural

features of your home to ensure that your new kitchen will reflect or complement the rest of your house. You don’t need to stick to one style; it is possible to mix styles like a contemporary kitchen in a farmhouse style home, or a French country kitchen in a modern home. Once you have found a kitchen style you like, consider cabinet materials and door styles. Remember that cabinetry style is one of the most important items in the kitchen. Look at different styles of doors and determine which style best achieves the look you want. If you’re looking for a wood door, then consider oak, ash, walnut, beech or maple. You can finish these wood doors with a stain or use a semiopaque stain for a more traditional feel. Lacquer on MDF (medium density fiberboard) or maple is also another popular choice in modern kitchens. Acrylic high gloss, matte finishes and aluminum framed glass doors are trending in Europe and look wonderful in a contemporary kitchen. Deciding what to use for your countertop is next. While white quartz is popular, oversized porcelain slabs are the upcoming trend. Countertops are also available in granite, concrete, butcher block and stainless steel. You can mix some of these for a unique look. For example, you could use quartz on the main counters and pair it with butcher block on the island. The kitchen backsplash is a great spot to make a statement. Mustard, terracotta and jewel tones are trending this season. Some flooring materials to consider include tile, hardwood/engineered hardwood, laminate, LVT (luxury vinyl tile) and LVP (luxury vinyl plank). Next, you need to look at appliances and the finishes they are available in. Do you want black stainless, stainless steel or panel ready appliances? This is an important piece of the renovation process as it can affect your layout.

Planning and layout The design of a kitchen is where reality hits. Figuring out how the kitchen will look can seem like a daunting task especially if there is a change in layout, or if you are making the

If you are considering doing the plan yourself, here are a few points to keep in mind:

Where are your work centers? These include places where food storage (both dry and refrigerated), preparation and cooking take place. Your pantry, sink, oven/range and refrigerator should be considered as part of your work centers. The golden triangle. Who does the cooking in the kitchen? The golden triangle is the relationship between the sink, refrigerator and stove. This guideline states that these should be laid out to loosely form a triangle, enabling you to perform tasks with ease and free from obstruction. Ideally, the perimeter of the triangle should be no less than 6 steps and no more than 12 steps. With today’s trends, the kitchen triangle may not be the best solution for your kitchen, especially if there are multiple cooks. Break the kitchen into working zones (consider prep, cooking, cleaning and storage as your zones). Each cook should have ease of access to all zones. A second prep area and sink are a strong consideration if you want peace in the kitchen! It is important to pay equal attention to the style, function and to ensure the working zones make the best sense for your needs. Use smart storage. Once you have figured out your working zones, determine where in your kitchen you need the storage for each zone. Drawers are a great choice for pot and small appliance storage. While walk in pantries are ideal, if you do not have the space, consider pull out pantries in the cabinet as an alternative. Know your spaces and surface heights. Counter height is 36” and bar height is 42.” Space between major work areas should be 42” to 48.” Space between secondary work areas should be 42.” There are exceptions to the rules but if you are unsure, it is best to rely on an expert for these exceptions. After you have considered all these points, you may want to consider hiring a professional to look over all your plans and materials to ensure it will perform the way it should. Then, you are ready to experience the start of your kitchen renovation! Just remember that through all the wonderful “learning experiences” you are about to partake in, this journey (and all the nights of ordering out), you will, in the end, be able to enjoy a functional kitchen with family and friends.

kitchen larger. There are also some other factors you should consider – do you want a message center, a place to display collections, a butler’s pantry or an island with seating? Your space will determine how many items on your wish list will become

a reality. The sizes and location of your appliances will play a large role in determining the layout of your kitchen. Because the kitchen is such an expensive undertaking, you may want to consider using a professional for your layout. renoanddecor.com

Our client’s father once told her, “If you work really, really, hard you can have pretty things.” She never forgot those words and made it her mission to do exactly that! The number one item on her bucket list of pretty things was a dream walk-in closet. She waited a long time to achieve this goal and happily, her dream closet is now a reality. She can’t believe that it’s actually hers! She absolutely loves it and feels that it’s the ultimate reward for all of the long hours of hard work over the years.

HAVE A SEAT A closet is not simply a closet anymore. It’s a place to sit down, relax and enjoy the occasional refreshment with your friends.

ELEGANT DISPLAY Selecting the perfect shoes, one amazing pair at a time, was a labor of love. Shaker drawer fronts and sparkling crystal knobs add a touch of elegance to this space.

LIGHTING The mirrored doors reflect the light within the room to create a more spacious feel. The ambience of the accent lighting creates a dreamy place to lounge in.

GOOD LOOKING STORAGE In order to achieve this wonderful, uncluttered look, clothing was cleverly hidden behind the floor to ceiling mirrored doors.

getting started

New

I

Directions by WAYNE SAGE

n Manitoba, the mandatory requirement for vaccination passports and masks recently ended. This marks what is referred to as an endemic, and brighter days will be ahead as we adjust for the other new term we have learned, ‘the new normal.’ Every part of me wants to be bouncing off the walls and if it wasn’t for the events unfolding in the Ukraine, I’m sure I would have a hard time finding room on that wall as you would all be joining me. So, what does ‘the new normal’ mean to the design and renovation industry? Great question, and here’s how I would like to see it answered! Let’s get inspired, let’s get bold and

let’s make changes in the way we look at our spaces and the finishes we select. We’re designing and building in a time in our industry where the products and innovations in the marketplace are outstanding. For too many years now we have seen the request for the white clean kitchen look, dark wood floors to contrast, etc., etc. Let’s make some of these trendy looks a part of our past which will mark an era much like the forest of oak we find in 1980’s Lindenwoods and surrounding communities of that era. Let’s relook at the way we use our space, its function and its importance in our life. Let’s not be afraid of colours, textures and uniqueness. The technology available today will

dramatically change the way we live and function in our homes, so let’s embrace that to the point where we’re operating our homes from our smart devices, which is more fun than the daily ‘Wordle.’ Basically, what I’m saying is, as the world changes around us, let’s ride this revolution and see what we can do as designers, builders, homeowners, etc. to put a new spin on how and where we live, but still embracing some of the classics. If you look at the architecture and design of the post pandemic 20’s, you can’t help but be inspired by the creativity. So, while our cars have all become boring and look the same, let’s not do that to our homes! Stay well and stay safe.

Wayne Sage is the owner and President of Harwood Design Builders, a multi-National and Provincial award-winning Winnipeg Design - Build contracting firm, winning 18 top five placements for best renovations in Canada, including a Best in Canada win.
