Alberta’s leading home organizing guru, Megan Golightly, has long advocated for living without clutter to achieve a healthy lifestyle. She preaches the gospel of an organized lifestyle at home trade shows across Canada. Through her business, Go Simplified, she has clients throughout North America.
The cost of clutter is a frequent subject Golightly talks about in her trade show appearances, most recently at the March 23 Edmonton Home+ Garden Show. She gets into the psychology behind letting go of things and offers tools, awareness and the questions to ask to change the way people deal with clutter in daily life.
She spoke with Reno + Decor about how letting go in the kitchen is the key to functioning smoothly in this essential room in your home.
The cost of clutter
Clutter can be costly – not just financially, but also in the way we live. “Clutter takes a toll in our time and energy. You lose money when you buy things that you end up not needing. Clutter adds stress, so it negatively affects our physical
health. And when it gets out of hand, it can also put pressure on relationships,” says Golightly.
The kitchen is a likely groundzero for clutter, especially for busy families with young children. That’s why Golightly says it’s absolutely essential to get a handle on the matter before it becomes a problem.
Sentimentality may be the biggest obstacle in getting rid of clutter or keeping things long after they have outlived their usefulness. “You have to get rid of things to stay organized. Duplicate items, old appliances, things that you haven’t used in the last year; those are all good candidates for the donation bin,” she says.
Take coffee mugs. These can overrun a kitchen cabinet in no time. Most are kept for sentimental reasons or for nostalgia’s sake, even when they are hardly used. Golightly’s rule of thumb for mugs is for each family member to have three, so a family of five will have only 15 mugs.
“Take a picture of the mugs that mean something to you, then put them in a box for donation.”
An organized life
Another key hack is to group similar things; keep utensils together, knives should be arranged neatly in a knife block,
food containers in one spot. The old adage “everything has a place and there’s a place for everything” works best in the kitchen.
Getting started can seem like the biggest hurdle, but don’t think it is insurmountable. “Don’t be overwhelmed by the mess, just get started. Get a garbage bag and go through the kitchen – the pantry, the drawers and cabinets – and pick out stuff that is no longer useful or is just taking up space.”
Small appliances used every day stay on the kitchen counter for ease of use, but other ones can be kept out of sight. Coffee makers are a good example of small appliances that need to be on the counter, but clunky appliances such as a toaster oven and food processor are best put away until needed.
For families with young children, Golightly says to designate a kitchen drawer for lunch boxes. Arrange similar food containers in the pantry for a pleasing esthetic and to know where to find items when you need them.

If you really want to live with less but just cannot let go, put a few of the “rarely used” pots and pans in a box in the basement and mark the date on the top. If you don’t need to retrieve them from the box in six months, take the box to a donation centre and don’t look back. Don’t get in your own way; there is freedom in less clutter.

For many of us, the remote work trend is here to stay. Perhaps it has taken over your dining room table, the kitchen island or a spot in your bedroom, and the chaos of your ad-hoc work area is impacting your life. Research shows that clutter negatively weighs on anxiety levels, stress, appetite and sleep, not to mention the uninspiring esthetic. But you don’t have to surrender to the madness.
Here’s some designer advice to help lift that weight, so you can work and live in harmony.

If you’re setting up in a larger, open-concept living area, you can define your office space by adding a rug that’s large enough to accommodate your desk and a few key pieces of office furniture. This anchors the parameters delineated for office use. Then, create some separation and storage by adding a view-through bookcase between the workspace and living area. This will allow light to flow through, while adding some privacy.
Office essentials
While you can’t deny the flexibility and convenience of working from home, I’m a huge believer in the separation of professional and personal space. This provides privacy while working, and also the opportunity to shut the door on your workday and get some well-earned R&R. For this reason, I always encourage my clients to carve out a dedicated office area in their home. If you have a whole room to spare with a door and a few other key essentials that I’ll get into, all the better. But remember, even where space is limited, you can still have a home office within a larger area of the home that brings function, while meeting your esthetic expectations.
When it comes to your home office, location is everything. Try to choose a space that’s separated from foot traffic. Find a quiet area away from the hustle and bustle, such as a spare bedroom, a spot in

Every office needs a desk and chair, storage, lighting and ideally, a door to close come 5 p.m. However, depending on your role, you may also need to accommodate additional equipment such as multiple computer monitors, a drafting table, and if you host meetings, a sitting area for colleagues or clients.
Lighting
This is arguably the most important element in the room. Poor lighting is the culprit behind headaches and strained eyes. Incorporate a layered lighting plan into your design, which includes ambient lighting, task lighting and if you choose, accent lighting. And if you have any natural light via a window, maximize that, too. If you’re in a basement or a dark corner, just ensure you have sufficient ambient lighting, which is the general
overhead illumination in a space. Task lighting, often in the form of a desk lamp or a floor lamp, would light your work area. Finally, accent lighting isn’t an essential per se, but it is a nice touch that works wonders for the ambience of the space.
The desk and chair
The biggest consideration for the desk is its size and height. On the other hand, the desk chair is often underestimated. If you sit for long periods, it would be wise to take the chair for a “test drive” if possible. Even with online reviews, it can be difficult to gauge comfort from a photo and written description. Take a seat and consider support and adjustability, and even how you move as you work (think swivel seat or a chair on wheels.)
Storage space
Stuff accumulates quickly, so be sure to declutter regularly, and plan to store the rest. Storage solutions may include shelves, bookcases, filing cabinets and the like. If your office is in a living area, be sure to factor style into your criteria. To save space, you can transition to digital files that can be saved on your computer or cloud. Just do your due diligence when it comes to back-up and security!

Your home office can be everything you need functionally, and everything you want esthetically, regardless of its size. Create your own inspiration board and put your vision into practice. Then, get busy!

MIXING PATTERNS LIKE A PRO

Spring is here, and with it traditionally comes a new array of wonderfully stylish inspiring fabrics bursting with colours, textures and some of the most incredible patterns.
As a designer, I look forward to the start of a new project. I enjoy pouring over fabric books gathering ideas and direction, and have been known to design an entire space from the inspiration of just one fabric. Fabric is tactile, and as such, the feel of lush
velvets, the beauty of some richly woven silks and the simplicity and texture of coarsely woven linen accompanied by rich, saturated colours is enough to inspire anyone to decorate. However, the question is: With all these fabrics and patterns to select from, how do you know what works together to achieve that “designer look” in your home?
To successfully mix patterns in your space, remember to vary the scale of the patterns from small

to large, as well as to maintain the same depth or magnitude of colour. By that, I mean if you’re working with primary colours, try not to incorporate fabrics that are pastels, as you will inevitably create an imbalance. Generally, if you start with blending a minimum of three fabric patterns, you shouldn’t have any problems.
The first pattern selection should be your most impactful one, so choose carefully and select a pattern that is larger scaled. The second pattern should be completely different, about half the scale of the first one and have some of the same colours incorporated throughout. For the third selection, it can be smaller scale and similar in pattern to either of the first two, with at least two to three of the same colours.
For example, if you have selected a large scale floral as your first pattern, the second could be a bold stripe or a geometric fretwork pattern, and then blend in another small scale floral for the third, or an alternative smaller geometric. Consider adding another pattern or two, or three, if you wish; maybe a small check, a dot is always favourable, or something in a solid small scale texture. If you’re more adventurous, consider throwing an animal print into the mix for a bit of fun.
When combining and layering patterns, it’s important to balance them throughout your space. The last thing you want is to create a situation where the heavier weight of patterns are all at one end of the room. They should be well proportioned with solids and any other visible patterns in your room, such as area rugs, wall coverings and fireplace surrounds, to provide equilibrium and an aesthetically pleasing look. Also, when pairing up your choices, it’s important to consider the “feel” of the fabrics you are selecting. Are they formal or more casual?
Dabbling in pattern blending can be fun, and fabrics can make a bold statement in your home. Mixing fabrics like a pro is all about balance, layering and blending. SMALL LIVING SPACE
With Real estate prices rising, families are getting creative and moving into smaller spaces closer to the core. Apartments were once seen as a place for the young, or those who couldn’t buy, but now it’s a welcome and affordable lifestyle choice and more people are opting for urban convenience, smaller spaces they can call “home.”
Going compact can be daunting for some, says Marie Potter, marketing director for Professional Organizers in Canada. “One way to approach small space living is to enjoy the benefits. Simply put, less space means less things, less mess, less stress and more time.”
TIPS TO TRANSITION INTO A COMPACT HOME: Office
If you need a home office (or at least a workspace), it’s essential to have a filing system versus a piling system. Invest in a decent, compact filing cabinet on wheels that tucks under the desk. You’ll have every file at your fingertips if you set it up with hanging file folders and tabs in alphabetical order. If you don’t have a desk, use floating shelves and magazine holders, or a wall organizer to manage papers vertically. Stack and label clear bins with supplies on a shelf.
Kitchen
Maintain small quantities of food and only have what you need. Free up counter space with hanging
baskets that hold fruit or other kitchen essentials. In very small spaces, install a wall-mounted table that folds down when you need it, and folds up and away when the meal is over. Open shelves will create the illusion of more space. Also consider items on wheels – they are easier to move around if necessary.
Living space
It’s best to keep things light and airy. Use limited colour palettes, plain white or mirrors to create the illusion of space. Seek multipurpose furniture such as an ottoman that can be used as an all-in-one foot rest, table and storage unit.
Bathroom
Hang a clear shower curtain or use a clear liner with mesh pockets behind it to store your bathroom necessities. Install a towel rack at the back of the tub, like you see in hotels. Have plenty of hooks to keep clothes off the floor. Stack clear, labelled bins under the sink for added storage.
Bedroom
Condo beds are all the rage for good reason: The mattress platform lifts up using pressurized pistons, so you can store and easily access belongings inside it. Otherwise, use under-the-bed bins for seasonal storage. Only have one set of sheets and towels, and just stay on top of laundry. Over-the-door hooks and a shoe organizer are a must. Thin design flock hangers create 30 per cent more space than plastic or wood hangers. If the bedroom is really
tiny, consider using curtains instead of bi-fold closet doors, or simply remove the closet doors for an open-concept closet.

Watch ‘Tiny Houses’ and read ‘Everything that Remains’ by minimalists Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. Also consider re-evaluating how you shop by skipping big bulk stores altogether. Remember, your apartment is a reminder that the most important things in life aren’t things!
