WELCOME TO THE
Neighbourhood
Compared to other global cities, Vancouver neighbourhoods have to work harder. The places we call home are tucked amidst extreme, jaw-dropping geography and Mother Nature demands all the attention. Built environments just can’t compete. But it’s in Vancouver’s limitations of landscape that the magic happens: that acquiescence to topography, water and vertical, and the human ingenuity—and taco restaurants—that result. For such a small area, this city is packed with local secrets, and we tapped enlightened residents— your neighbours—to dish on their slice of Vancouver life. With this insight, we at Vancouver magazine are confident that the best city in the world just got a little better. We’ll see you around the neighbourhood.

Vancouver’s Williamsburg
Having lived in Yaletown for the past five years, Lui loves the area for its sense of community. She enjoys wandering through the neighbourhood to discover new boutiques, and restaurants, saying hello to familiar faces along the way. “My perfect day would include sleeping in and hitting the gym. Following that, reading the Sunday New York Times with a glass of wine on the sunny patio at Provence Marinaside, where I enjoy peoplewatching. After a relaxing afternoon, I would ride my bike along the seawall and meet friends for a drink at Minami or the Parlour. There’s a true neighbourhood vibe in Yaletown.”

Once an industrial powerhouse, Granville Island quickly expanded its horizons in the ’70s to become the self-proclaimed artisan capital of Vancouver. With seasoned artists filling each waterfront shop and droves of young students pushing the boundaries in the nearby university, the island is an art instillation in and of itself—and one of Vancouver’s top attractions for a reason.

Although you won’t find trolls under the Granville Street Bridge, this neighbourhood does have certain fairytale qualities—with artisan delicacies, local grub, and sublime entertainment, we wouldn’t be surprised if you started singing to the pidgins by day’s end

for a quick tour of the fair-trade world, be sure to check out Ten Thousand Villages (1660 Duranleau St., 604-633-0440, Tenthousandvillages.ca). LANDMARKS An homage to Granville Island’s industrial past made modern, Ocean Concrete’s giant silos, painted by Brazilian street artists in 2014, is a must-see (1415 Johnston St., 604-263-2863, Oceanconcrete.com)—as is a gorgeous view of the island from an Aquabus (1333 Johnston St., 604-689-5858, Theaquabus.com). EVENTS Literary aficionados take over the island in early September during the Vancouver Writers Fest—which has hosted legendries like JK Rowling and Margaret Atwood (202-1398 Cartwright St., 604-6816330, Writersfest.bc.ca)—while theatre buffs steal back the show a few weeks later for the iconic Vancouver Fringe Festival (2021398 Cartwright St., 604-257-0350, Vancouverfringe.com). EATING If you’re looking for authentic Canadian nosh, Edible Canada is a must-try (Granville Island Public Market, Johnston St., 604-682-6681, Ediblecanada.com) or scour through the dozens of individual grocers; we’re partial to Lee’s Donuts, in the Granville Island Public Market (122 – 1689 Johnston St., 604-685-4021, Granvilleisland. com). The Stock Market (1689 Johnston St., 604-687-2433, Thestockmarket.ca) is a tourist favourite, with delicious soups available to eat in the bustling food hall or to take home and freeze.

DRINKING You can’t go wrong with a classic draft at Granville Island Brewery (1441 Cartwright St., 604-687-2739, Gib.ca), but if you’re in the mood for something with a bit more bite check out the dangerously smooth Endeavour Gin from Liberty Distillery (1494 Old Bridge St., 604-558-1998, Thelibertydistillery.com). “I’d start the day with a quick walk around the seawall, stopping in for some coffee and chocolate raspberry scones at Terra Breads in the Market. After I finished working in the shop for the day, I’d grab a cocktail at Liberty, swing by Go Fish for my favourite fish tacos, and end the night with a show at Theatre Sports League.”
4 INDULGENCES AT GRANVILLE ISLAND’S PUBLIC MARKET Although wandering around Granville Island’s Public Market is an attraction in and of itself (watch for elbow-toelbow tourists and flying DSLRs) we’re not here to mosey. For anyone who’s looking for the best without the bustle, here are our top treats in the Market that will have you in-and-out like a pro. Lee’s Donuts Occupying the space for 27 years, Lee’s Donuts is a Granville Island classic. Try your hand at their popular, melt-in-your-mouth Honey Dip or go rogue with one of their rotating selects. Four Season’s Farm Although we’re partial to the strawberry towers for a delicious healthy option, tickle your fancy with any
seasonal fresh fruit, curated from local Canadian farms. Stuart’s Quality Baked Goods If you’re hunting for a showstopper, look no further. Stuart’s handcrafted cakes, pastries, cookies and desserts are almost too beautiful to devour. BONUS: The Granville Island Tea Company With row upon row of stacked black tins on wooden shelves, nothing pairs better with a treat than a fi nely brewed cup of tea—and Granville Island Tea Co., home to over 150 distinct blends— offers the perfectly steeped companion you’ve been looking for.

Shop local
Though the market is a tourist destination, incentives are in place to encourage locals to shop here, too. Initiatives such as free parking are enticing locals as much as urban adventures like city kayaking.
THE DEFINITIVE DRINKING GUIDE TO GRANVILLE ISLAND Granville Island is known for creative types—and luckily for us, this includes their brewmasters. Located within the hundreds of artisan shops are breweries, distilleries, and restaurants; all serving top quality alcohol, all conveniently local. Granville Island Brewery One of Granville Island’s most popular stops for both locals and out-oftowners, Granville Island Brewery is a gold-mine of taste, location, and service. We suggest ordering a Taster Round (4, 5 oz taster beers) with our favourites—the classic
Island Lager and the Van Dame Small Batch, created behind the glass in their onsite brewery (www. Gib.ca). Liberty Distillery A popular hotspot with the locals (including Sarah Schwieger, coowner of Granville Island Broom Co.), Liberty Distillery is all about hand-crafted spirits. Their dangerously smooth and award-winning Endeavour Gin is great on its own or used in one of their popular cocktails such as The Shacker’s
Sour, which pairs gin with spiced cranberry syrup, lime and egg white (Thelibertydistillery.com). Edible Canada An advocate for locally produced food, Edible Canada is a dining rockstar here. With an extensive wine list broken down by Canadian regions, it’s almost impossible to go wrong, even for an amateur. But if you’re looking for a suggestion, try Blue Mountain’s 2013 Pinot Noir—it’s smooth, fruity, and a clear Canadian winner (Ediblecanada.com).

This ‘hood has become a popular destination for those biking round Vancouver’s best breweries. Parallel 49, Red Truck, Main St., and Brassneck are among those easily accessible from Olympic Village’s winding bike paths. Alternatively, Craft Beer Market offers hundreds of beers on tap but all under one roof.
EATING The best thing about a newly constructed neighbourhood is the ability to build to meet Vancouver’s demands, meaning Olympic Village is dissected by bike routes creating convenient paths to eateries. A man who rolls his Rs in an extra tasty way just might deliver your order at La Taqueria Pinche Taco Shop (2549 Cambie St., 604 -558-2549, Lataqueria.com). DRINKING Round out a movie night at The Park Theatre by sliding into a booth at Prontino and ordering yourself a negroni (3475 Cambie St., 604-722-9331, Prontocaffe.ca), or choose from a host of Belgian, local and gluten-free beers at BierCraft Bistro (3305 Cambie

Rival beer houses Tap and Barrel (1 Athletes Way, 604685-2223, Tapandbarrel.com) and Craft Beer Market (85 W. 1st Ave., 604-709-2337) provide the easy beginning to a pub crawl with a view; with scenes overlooking False Creek and the Vancouver skyline. Steel Toad Brewery (97 E 2nd Ave., 604-709-8623, Steeltoad.ca) is a recent addition to the area and has quickly become a prime spot to watch hockey games throughout the season with their in-house brews and bar snacks to match. I got the kids’ backpacks for school there. It’s amazing for a hostess gift and Native shoes. They carry a lot of local brands. There are not many small, local businesses that support local companies. They’re the nicest people. “We get a lot of sandwiches at Beans, which is a great little place with homemade everything,” Taggart says. “Sundays, we order sushi from Shiro at Cambie and 14th. It’s Family Sushi Sunday and everybody comes over to our house. With a brood of three and busy schedules, date nights for Taggart and her husband, musician Dave Genn, are few and far between, but the pair managed to grab lunch alone at owner Angela Maida’s Italian restaurant Pronto when Taggart was vacationing in August. “I’m pretty sure she makes the best meatballs in the city,” Taggart says. “It’s eight bucks for three meatballs. The 52-hectare Queen Elizabeth Park (4600 Cambie St., 604-873-7000, Vancouver,ca/ parks) is home to the Bloedel Conservatory as well as sculptures by artist Henry Moore, the landscaped quarry garden, and fine dining at Seasons in the Park.
EVENTS Live music, a beer garden and a family fun zone flood Olympic Village with festivity during the Rio Tinto Alcan Dragon Boat Festival each June (Dragonboatbc.ca). Neighbourhood streets that surround Cambie Village come alive at Halloween with haunted houses, spooky decorations and costumed kids. Every Sunday throughout the summer, check out the city’s Food Cart Festival (215 W. 1st Ave., Foodcartfest.com) between Olympic Village and Cambie Bridge for a one-stop shop of what’s going on in the mobile culinary scene.

From breathtaking vistas to million-dollar condos, this picture-perfect neighbourhood is ready for its (postcard) close-up. Visitors from around the world converge here for an exciting pedestrian-dodging bike ride or simply to grab a coffee and stroll the length of the seawall, alongside local residents enjoying the morning. Surrounded by Stanley Park to the west, Burrard Inlet to the north, the bustling Downtown core to the east and hectic Georgia Street to the South, Coal Harbour rises as an unlikely oasis where the suit-and-tie lunch crowd can get away from it all and camera-toting tourists enjoy breathtaking views of the sea, mountains and the Vancouver skyline.

My Perfect Day ELTON HUBNER, VIDEOGRAPHER, EYES MULTIMEDIA
“I often start my day with a London Fog from Caffè Artigiano and a stroll on the seawall with a friend. The Mill Marine Bistro & Bar is my favourite place for lunch and to take in the view, but the day is not complete without a drink from Rawbar’s extensive wine list.”
EATING Giovane’s signature sugar bun is a must-try (1038 Canada Place, 604-6955501, Giovanecafe.com), but for a complete meal head to The Mill Marine Bistro & Bar, which has one of the largest outdoor patios in Vancouver, meaning it’s the perfect place to watch passers-by while savouring a cedar plank pizza in one hand and a specialty sangria—blueberry and rosemary, anyone?—in the other (1199 West Cordova, 604-687-6455, Millbistro.ca). Cactus Club Coal Harbour took home Vancouver magazine’s ‘Best Downtown’ restaurant award in 2014 for its service, Iron Chef competitor Rob Feenie’s menu, and views of the bay (1085 Canada Place, 604-620-7410, Cactusclubcafe.com). DRINKING The massive Mahony and Sons at Canada Place is family friendly, as well as offering panoramic views of the mountains, and 16 beers on tap (1055 Canada Place, 604-647-7513, Mahonyandsons.com). If mixing drinks and strollers isn’t your thing, Tableau Bar and Bistro offers a more sophisticated atmosphere as well as an extensive wine list (1181 Melville St., 604-639-8692, Tableaubarbistro.com). If whisky were a religion, Blackbird
Public House would be its Mecca. Wondering which scotch to order from the 23-page whisky menu? Ask for Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible, always readily available behind the bar (905 Dunsmuir St., 604-899-4456, Donnellygroup.ca). SHOP THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Coal Harbour isn’t known as a shopping hub, but does produce a good brew. Pick up a six pack of Coal Harbour Brewing Co.’s 311 lager to see what we mean (BC Liquor, 68 Bute St., 604-660-4572). OK Gift Shop has the largest variety of Canadainspired, maple-syrup-drenched gifts around. This Japanese mega gift store chain takes Canadiana to a whole new level (310-1155 West Pender St., 604-6897811, Okgift.ca). HOMEWARE / DESIGN SHOPPING Fancy a bed made by Bentley? Lloyd Bruce Home Collections has just that (150-10 Nicola St., 604-677-4411, Lloydbrucehome.com). For more traditional homeware lines, try McKellars (549 W Pender St., 604-734-1671, Mckellarsinteriors.com). If you fancy yourself a bit of a chef, Snaidero Kitchens & Design is a must (1575 W Georgia St., 604-669-4565, Snaidero. com).
ATTRACTIONS The iconic seawall rips through the neighbourhood and is the gateway to Stanley Park, home to the Lost Lagoon as well as tennis courts, dog parks, and bike trails. Harbour Green Park plays host to Liz Magor’s Light Shed artwork, an ode to the marine sheds that once lined Coal Harbour’s waterways. At night, the inner lights of the pieces pulse in a dream-like way. (At the foot of Broughton Street, adjacent to the Coal Harbour Community Centre). If you hear an explosion at night, never fear—the Nine O’Clock Gun rings out each night as a tribute to the old signal used to bring fishermen home (2050 Stanley Park Drive). EVENTS Coal Harbour’s wide, scenic roads play host to many a parade. Traffic shuts down for the annual Santa Claus Parade every year on December 6 (Rogerssantaclauseparade.com), as does the Chinese New Year Parade each February (Cbavancouver.ca). With Vancouver’s large Irish immigrant population, you can imagine how crazy the St Patrick’s Day Parade (Celticfestvancouver.com) gets every March, with the Vancouver Marathon in May attracting a different kind of crowd (Bmovanmarathon.ca).

There’s something grandiose about being surrounded by water in a downtown metropolis. Many dwellers of this city of glass abide in 5oo-sq.-ft. condos, squeezed between the financial district’s towering office blocks and large department store. Developers are still finding space to build bigger, higher, shinier options for those who want in, meaning you can expect Vancouver’s skyline to drastically change over the next five years. Some urban nerds may criticize Vancouver’s downtown core for being souless, but for those who live in towering skyscrapers above the city’s lights, the busy streets, plentiful retail, and proximity to parks and big-league sports make this metro core the only place worth considering. Have we mentioned the views?

Bright lights big city
The Vancouver skyline inspires thoughts of busy streets and honking yellow cabs. However, downtown’s real estate is high enough that the only late-night noise is the rattling of shopping carts full of cans moving through dark alleyways.
EATING Winning gold for ‘Best Downtown’ at this year’s Vancouver magazine Restaurant Awards, Cactus Club Cafe Coal Harbour has postcard-perfect views that surely grant an unfair advtange (1085 Canada Pl., 604-620-7410, Cactusclubcafe.com). Known for its signature lattes, Cafe Medina has been known to have a lineup of would-be diners around the block, so make sure you get there early to avoid a two-hour wait (780 Richards St., 604-879-3114, Medinacafe.com). At the foot of the boutique Loden Hotel, sits Tableau Bar Bistro; try the cheese-andcharcuterie plate with a generously poured cocktail on a rainy Vancouver evening (1181 Melville St., 604-639-8692, Tableaubarbistro.com). DRINKING Throwing back to speakeasy times, the green light above heavy, nonsignposted wooden doors signal the entrance to Prohibition, in the basement of the Rosewood Hotel Georgia. Try the Inception cocktail, comprising of a ball of frozen negroni cocktail, instide a tradition negroni (801 W. Georgia St., 604-673-7089, Rosewoodhotels. com). If you’re looking for an afterwork vibe, call ahead to see if there’s 22
a chance of entry at Joey Bentall One, a hotspot for those seeking plentiful drink options and a well-rounded menu from chef Chris Mills after a crazy day at the office (507 Burrard St., 604-915-5639, Joeyrestaurants.com). Grabbing a drink before a B.C. Lions or Canucks game? Back Forty is a winning option (118 Robson Street, 604-688-5840, Backfortysaloon. com). Try the bucket of fried chicken and whatever beer is on special for game day. SHOP THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Downtown has officially become the department-store core. The opening of Nordstrom’s first Canadian location brought with it brands the West Coast has been waiting for, along with carefully selected local-designer goods (799 Robson Street., 604-699-2100, Shop. nordstrom.com). Longtime resident Holt Renfrew hasa huge expansion in the works (737 Dunsmuir St., 604-681-3121, Holtrenfrew.com), and all eyes are on the massive Hudson’s Bay location to see what will be coming next from the sartorial giant (674 Granville St., 604- 6816211, Thebay.com). HOMEWARE / DESIGN SHOPPING The world-renowned Roche Bobois
brings top-end designer furniture to its downtown showroom, (716 W. Hastings St., 604-633-5005, Roche-bobois.com). For the bargain-hunters, climb the many escalators to where Homesense occupies the top floor of a massive downtown retail block (493 Robson St., 604-683-4406., Homesense.ca). Cookworks supplies all the kitchen supplies your heart could ever desire, so pick up that Kitchen Aid mixer you’ve been waiting for someone to buy you (377 Howe St., 604-662-4918, Cookworks.ca). ATTRACTIONS Housed in a neoclassical courthouse on Robson St., the Vancouver Art Gallery building is the (un)official gathering place for all types of protests and rallies, as well as world-famous exhibits from the likes of Douglas Coupland and Ansel Adams (750 Hornby St., 604662-4700, Vanartgallery.bc.ca). Across the street, the iconic Fairmont Hotel Vancouver is known as the ‘Castle in the City’ and is reminiscent of the CN railway hotels’ glory days (900 W. Georgia St., 604-684-3131, Fairmont.com). Check out Victory Square to stand where Vancouver locals signed up to fight in WWI in the early 1900s, remembered now by a granite memorial (Vancouver.ca).

Gastown’s hole-in-the-wall joints offer aged character that other neighbourhoods can’t compete with. Tacofi no’s small deck requires a well-planned evening, because would-be walk-in customers have been known to wait in line for two hours.

DRINKING Visit Bambudda to imbibe delightful Asian-inspired concoctions (99 Powell St., 604-428-0301, Bambudda.ca); The Diamond provides an intimate atmosphere at the front, but if you’re digging more of a party vibe, mingle in their back bar (6 Powell St., 604-568-8272, Di6mond.com). My Perfect Day AMY RENEE YORK, NOUVELLE NOUVELLE
“I live in Mount Pleasant, near the other shop, so I would probably ride my bike down here early — well, fairly early. If I have the day off, I would grab a coffee or a flat white at Nelson the Seagull or maybe a juice from The Juice Truck. “Then I’d wander into Community Thrift to see if I could find some awesome one-of-a-kind pieces. And then I’d hit up either Eastwood for a Spin Class with Jess, she’s my favorite teacher there, or yoga with Shelley at One Yoga for the People — it’s my favorite studio in the city, and she’s the best. If I was feeling really energetic, I might even do both. “After a little exercise, I’d go for brunch at Wildebeest — they do this white bean dish that’s awesome. “Then I’d do a little window-shopping and maybe pick something up. I’d go to Super Champion, visit the boys there, and pick up a nice saddle on order there, or I’ve been drooling over the drop bars that they have. “I love Six Acres as well, they’re so lovely, or L’Abattoir if I’m feeling fancy. “If I ended up being out late enough, I’d probably go to Hi-Five. It’s so good, and it’s open till 2 a.m. — plus Corbin’s such a good guy.”

Brick and pixels
Built before the car, Gastown is a walkable jewel in Vancouver’s famed pedestrian-friendly crown. Sidewalks dip to meet the road and brick walkways make strolling a joy for everyone from tourists to the city’s emerging tech talent streaming into the the redbrick buildings at a torrid pace.
ATTRACTIONS Join the ever-present crowd of tourists awaiting the dulcet chimes of the historic Steam Clock (305 Water St.), take a stroll down to Gassy Jack: the infamous statue and eponym of Gastown (1 Water St.), or wander over to Woodwards, whose “W” is distinct and recognizable from afar (128 West Cordova). EVENTS Watch the annual Gastown Grand Prix and cheer on waves of bikers as they race along Gastown’s cobblestone streets in July (Globalrelayggp.org) or if you’re feeling participatory, Gastown plays host to a live music fest Make Music each June. Join the lively celebration and belt out a tune or two (Makemusicvancouver.ca).
6 OF GASTOWN’S COZIEST CAFES At East Van Roasters, seating is limited but if you’re lucky you can snag a coveted spot—and a salted chocolate chip cookie while you’re at it (319 Carrall St., 604-6297562, Eastvanroasters.com). With spacious seating, heavenly pastries, and late hours, Coffee Bar is the ultimate work spot away from the office (10 Water St., 604-566-9693, Thecoffeebar.ca). If you’re all about the bean, stop by Timbertrain and warm up with a carefully crafted brew (311 W. Cordova, Timbertraincoffeeroasters.com). Revolver serves
up no-frills, simply good coffee; pick up your morning java or settle in for the afternoon (325 Cambie St., 604-558-4444, Revolvercoffee.ca). Replete with flowers in their decor, The Birds and the Beets has a menu of great coffee and mouthwatering food (55 Powell St., 604-893-7832, Birdsandbeets.ca). Chinatown / Crosstown / Railtown
With Yaletown established and Gastown all grown up, Crosstown, Chinatown and Railtown represent the new frontier of Vancouver’s core. Each is undergoing major transition: Crosstown combining its residential base with major sports locations and theatre district programming; Chinatown reconciling its complicated past with a future of varied commerce and citizenry, and Railtown shedding its industrial roots for a role as a hub of creativity and innovation.

My Perfect Day ROB LO, OWNER, RODEN GRAY
A new chapter
The powers that be are working behind the scenes to transform Chinatown back in to the food and culture hub it once was. Groups like the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation are respecting tradition by helping existing business owners stay in the area, but also encouraging new organizations to take advantage of large, vacant spaces with the industrial look Gastown-lovers have seized upon.
EATING Belgian restaurant Chambar (568 Beatty St., 604-879-7119, Chambar.com) and modern Chinese brasserie Bao Bei (163 Keefer St., 604-688-0876, Bao-bei.ca) have already secured their position in Vancouver’s culinary scene, with menus that rival the top restaurants of any city. On the other end of the spectrum, why not try the steals of a deal served up by the culinary students at Vancouver Community College (1155 East Broadway., 604- 871-7000, VCC.ca), the freshly made individual servings of
classics like seafood chow mein at Ming Fong Fast Food (180 Keefer St., 604-687-8223) or the huge plates of fried chicken and grits at Deacon’s Corner (101 Main St., 604684-1555, Deaconscorner.ca). DRINKING Fill up your growlers at Vancouver’s newest addition to the brew pub scene: Postmark Brewing (55 Dunlevy Ave., 604-6991988, Postmarkbrewing.com) and then head to Crab Park for a signature sunny-day outing. On game days, the remodelled
“After checking out things at the store in the morning, I like to grab a coffee at Milano just down the block. For lunch, I like something light like wonton soup but, unfortunately Daisy Garden, my go-to spot in Chinatown, recently closed due to a fire. After work, I’ll pop into L’Abattoir for dinner, or if the lineups are light, Phnom Penh; then dessert at Soft Peaks or a nightcap at Diamond. Sometimes both!”
Bismarck (526 Abbott St., 604-608-0500, Bismarck.ca) almost equals the stadium atmosphere sports fans are seeking. Calabash (428 Carrall St., 604-568-5882, Calabashbistro.com) is arguably the city’s best Caribbean restaurant but it inarguably serves the city’s best Dark and Stormy. SHOP THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Sunrise Market is one of many places to pick up fresh fruit and vegetables but boasts a unique history in that it was an institution for both the Japanese and
DUMPLINGS Recently re-opened Kam Wai offers both ready-to-eat dim sum and dozens of frozen servings to take home to steam yourself. A deserving alternative to Hon’s.

LITERARY LAUGHS The Emerald is an upstairs hideaway featuring vintage Vegas decor, with bands in the back room, and literary comedy nights like Teen Angst in the front.

Chinese communities, a big deal back in the day. Livestock is not a market but the city’s best sneaker boutique and a must-visit on any stroll down Pender. ATTRACTIONS The Chinese Cultural Centre is home to the Chinese Canadian Military Museum; with 2015 marking the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, this is the place to pay homage to the men whose courage to enlist and fight led directly to Chinese Canadians being granted full citizenship in 1947. EVENTS Officially, the big one is Chinese New Year, with snacking on barbecue pork steamed buns from New Town at the annual parade a familiar, familial tradition. Unofficially, every noon hour in Railtown features an impromptu fashion show, with lunch-counter lineups acting as runways for the stylish employees of
Aritzia, among other chic local offices and studios.
BOUNTY HUNTER Never before have there been so many restaurants serving up Asian dishes with a twist. And the bulk of them are doing it right in Chinatown, the city’s cradle for authentic Far Eastern cuisine. The grand dame of this burgeoning scene remains Bao Bei, opened in 2010. The selfstyled Chinese brasserie’s Shao Bings (crunchy flatbread stuffed with lamb, onions and peppers) are a dish that screams “order another of me,” while the Crispy Tofu and King Pea Tips are familiar, elegant starters. The bar, meanwhile, inspires a real
feeling of potential. On one memorable night, the manager even shared some of his imported moonshine. A diverse selection of beverages is a staple these establishments share. So, at The Union, wash down some wok-tossed spicy green beans with a bourbon or gin-based “Banga,” while at Torofuku pairing anything boozy with the Kickass Rice 2.0 bowl featuring flame-torched pork belly would kick things up a notch over ordering the same dish from Le Tigre, the founders’ popular food truck.

Surrounded by water in Vancouver’s downtown peninsula, the West End is one of the densest neighbourhoods in Canada, and one of the most diverse. Sandwiched between gleaming glass-shard highrises and towering ancient trees, it’s urban yet green, with heritage houses and ’70s buildings, and a mix of retirees, young families, ethnic newcomers and a vibrant LGBT community—all of who get to claim its beaches and Stanley Park (the city’s first, dating back to 1888) as their backyard.

“A perfect West End day for me and my husband Romi starts with a stroll to one of our neighbourhood’s great brunch spots, the Sylvia Hotel, for a tasty West Coast wild salmon benny. After brunch we head for the farmers market to get local produce and stop at the Daily Catch for seafood. I then try to get in a run or walk through Stanley Park with friends, sometimes with a pint at the Prospect Point Café, or the Fountainhead as a reward for finishing the run. I love the West End, as friends, food, family, work and just about everything I need is right here. It’s an incredible place to call home.”
BEACH IT Third Beach is on the remote, western edge of the park, sun-surf-andsand central for skinnyjeaned fixie cyclists and picnicking families alike. Set up on the north end to hang with the hipsters, and come for sunset on Tuesday if you’re into the beat of bongo drums.

ATTRACTIONS The historic Sylvia Hotel, a beacon on English Bay since 1912 (1154 Gilford St., 604-681-9321, Sylviahotel.com), contrasts with nearby A-maze-ing Laughter, a public-art and selfie-taking hotspot. On the other side of the beach, the Inukshuk (think literal and figurative landmark) is another snap-happy zone. EVENTS Be a voyeur (or drag diva) at the annual and now-legendary summer block party and parade, when 650,000 people flock to Vancouver Pride (Vancouverpride.ca). Then, come winter, cool off in English Bay on New Year’s Day with the local Polar Bear Swim Club (Vancouver.ca/parks), one of the largest and oldest in the world. Really.
Around the West End in 8 eateries It’s easy to globetrot off the manyvaried plates of the West End—from family-style Italian to Spanish tapas. First stop is Alsace at [1] La Brasserie, for a pastis or German beer (from Pilsner to Dunkel) with moules frites or spätzle. Down the street is Mexico via a spicy jalapeño margarita and sopa de tortilla at [2] Lolita’s. On Denman there are sherry flights and shared plates of Spanish bites at [3] España, and then southernstyle American barbecue and killer
cocktails (bourbon, of course) at the [4] Buckstop. Family-style Italian plates (think burrata) beckon at [5] Tavola, but there’s a quicker carb fix at [6] Pizza Fabrika (from woodfired Flammkuchen to Puttanesca). Yorkshire pudding and a pint of London Pride Bitter or Crown Float (that’s Guiness and cider) calls at [7] The Fat Badger gastropub, before a full-circle return home for the locavore menu (including oh-so-coastal Oceanwise seafood) at [8] Forage.

“A typical day involves heading to [West Point Grey Community Centre] at 6 a.m. for a quick workout before my day starts. It’s the only time I have! In her ‘spare’ time, Anick often participates in neighbourhood events like Movies in the Park, Shop West 10th (Christmas) or Point Grey Fiesta (June, annually). ATTRACTIONS Aside from the many beaches the West Side has to offer, including Spanish Banks, Jericho, and strolls through Pacific Spirit park, this ‘hood also boasts many family-friendly activities. Southlands Heritage Farm (6767 Balaclava St., Vancouver, 604-261-1295., Southlandsfarms.com) is a quaint local farm open to the public. The Maynard family has lived next door for generations and bought this property in 2008 to share sustainable living with the community. The farm offers everything from camps and therapeutic riding lessons to their own farmers market, visits with animals, a yearly pumpkin patch and many other community-focused events. Aberthau Mansion, (4397 West 2nd Ave., 604-257-8140, Westpointgrey.org) now used as the West Point Grey Community
Centre, is a heritage mansion and the first notably large residential property in the area. It’s home to many festive community events throughout the year and has been a very big part of the community since the 1970s. EVENTS The start of the holiday season is marked every year by the Lighting of Aberthau House at West Point Grey Community Centre. Join residents on November 25th in this beautiful heritage home, decorated for the season, as locals meet on the front lawn to count down to the festive light switch being flicked. It marks the official beginning of the Christmas season. Suburban dream
Kerrisdale has become the dream utopia for Vancouverites who want a small-town vibe within close proximity to the downtown core. With good schools, restaurants, and treelined avenues fi lled with heritage housing, it really doesn’t get much better than this. Don’t let the quaint neighbourhood fool you, housing prices have grown to accomodate the surge in popularity, with most plots pricing out at over one million dollars, even for a tear-down home.

The heated outdoor pool is a popular summertime spot for all ages.
Christmas in Kerrisdale (Kerrisdalevillage.com) runs on Saturdays through December; with free horsedrawn carriage rides, Santa visits and roving quartets all set in the beautifully decorated village town centre. My Perfect Day JACKIE KAI ELLIS, BEAUCOUP BAKERY
South Granville has become the shopping hub for those seeking designer labels, original artwork, and high-end furniture. An expansive Restoration Hardware faces off against the new, half-block wide EQ3; while just up the street, Free People squares off with Anthropologie, and Diane’s Lingerie lies directly across from La Vie En Rose. Healthy business competition means plenty of choice for those in the market.
EATING Beaucoup Bakery & Café offers up incredible French-inspired pastries from notable Vancouverite Jackie Kai Ellis that will transport your taste buds to Paris with every bite (2150 Fir St., 604-732-4222, Beaucoupbakery.com). Those looking for an outstanding menu of meatless delights, served with a side of modern style, should check out Heirloom Vegetarian (1509 W. 12th Ave., 604-733-2231, Heirloomrestaurant.ca). DRINKING Let Grapes & Soda tickle your palate with their carefully cultivated list of noteworthy natural wines (1541 W. 6th Ave., 604336-2456, Grapesandsoda.ca). Another local favourite is The Stable House, where they offer a healthy selection of libations, set in a laidback atmosphere (1520 W. 13th Ave., 604-736-1520, Thestablehouse.ca). SHOP THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Exquisitely curated, Goodge Place showcases unique high-end home pieces and worldly gifts (1523 W. 8th Ave., 604-7141133, Goodgeplace.com). The Latest Scoop is an emporium offering up a well-edited collection of affordable fashion, accessories, and more. It pays to visit often as the merchandise is ever-changing (2928 Granville St., 604-569-3212, Thelatestscoop.
ca). Anthropologie offers scented candles, vintage-chic furniture and bohemian clothing to satisfy any picky shopper (2912 Granville St., 604-734-2529, Anthropologie. com). Next, punctuate your space beautifully with striking handmade, nature-inspired decor pieces from 18KARAT (3039 Granville St., 604-742-1880, 18karatstore.com). South Granville also plays host to West Elm and West Elm Market, which locals say serves the best coffee in the neighbourhood (2947 Granville St., 604733-6730, Westelm.com). ATTRACTIONS Since 1931, the Stanley Theatre has been the entertainment hub on South Granville. Once a cinema, the art deco space is now a live-theatre venue (2750 Granville St., 604687-1644, Artsclub.com). A cherished landmark constructed

“My perfect day on South Granville would obviously start at Beaucoup doing ‘quality control’ with a coffee and pastry. I would walk with my coffee, beelining towards my favourite boutiques for a fashion fix. I love Oliver & Lilly, Violet Boutique, Boboli, Misch and Maxmara. I would lunch at Rangoli—they serve savoury chaat that is both light and flavourful. The rest of the afternoon would be spent hitting galleries like Bau-Xi, and rummaging through books at Chapters until it was time for a cocktail (an Old Fashioned) at West. I would finish the day with dinner at either Farmer’s Apprentice or Grapes & Soda for one of the best meals in town!”

My Perfect Day NIGEL SPRINGTHORPE, BRASSNECK BREWERY
When asked about his perfect day in the neighbourhood, co-owner of Brassneck Brewery, Nigel Springthorpe, described a lazy Sunday “in a kid-free fantasy world.” It would start with taking Wilma (his dog) for a walk to Discover Dogs for a Bully Stick. Once you’ve had “a wee bit of exercise, now it’s time for doughnuts. Head to Cartems to pick up a selection to go.” Then a quick jaunt over to Elysian Coffee on 7th and Ontario to grab an iced, draft-cold brew to go, and head back to Dude Chilling Park “trying really hard not to take a bite out of each of your six doughnuts.” Once you’ve powered up with coffee, doughnuts, and some exercise, it’s “beer safari time! Head to Main Street Brewing for a Pilsner, then hit up Brassneck for a flight, head on over to 33 Acres for a slice of Life, and if you’ve got the stamina after all that, Steel Toad for an IPA.” Then, to soak up all that beer, have a proper dinner with all the bells and whistles at Buckdock & Co., followed by Sunday Service, a regular comedy improv show at the Fox Cabaret. “Night cap at the Narrow. Then home, in an ambulance, probably!”

Hipster paradise
Vancouverites often poke fun at Main Street’s vintagewearing, craft-beer loving, man-bun-toting locale, but really this ‘hood has become a hub of entertainment, dining, and live music venues.
HOMEWARE / DESIGN SHOPPING Stylish, modern home accessories and furniture are on offer at Vancouver Special (3612 Main St., 604-568-36-73, Shop. vanspecial.com), but if you’re in the market for something with heritage, look no further than Red Rose Antiques (4285 Main St., 604-875-8588, Redroseantiques.com) where every piece is crafted from repurposed wood salvaged from the likes of buildings, bridges, and barns. If cute kitchen gadgets, gardening supplies, or bits and bobs for bed and bath are what you’re after, head to Welk’s General Store (3511 Main St., 604-873-3330) and be prepared to load up on all sorts of things you didn’t even realize you needed.
former post office is now the Heritage Hall (3102 Main St., 604-879-4816, heritagehall.bc.ca) that plays host to multiple annual events, as well as private parties and weddings. A similarly repurposed event centre is the Fox Cabaret (2321 Main St., Foxcabaret.com), which was once an adult film cinema and now hosts some of the city’s most exciting entertainment. Once more in the spirit of reimagining a space—or renaming it, at least—is the infamous Dude Chilling Park (2390 Brunswick St.), where in 2012 a local artist famously replaced the City of Vancouver Guelph Park sign with a highly convincing replica, using its new name, of course.
ATTRACTIONS The clock tower at the corner of Main and 15th has been a landmark in the neighbourhood for 100 years, and this
EVENTS Main Street hosts its own unique Car Free Day (Carfreevancouver.org), in late June of each year. Local vendors and
entertainers set up shop right in the middle of the street and individuals are encouraged to leave their vehicles at home in favour taking in all their community has to offer on foot. Each November the Heritage Hall plays host once again to the adorable Blim Market (Blim.ca), a craft fair for locals who wish to hawk their wares. Admission is by donation. Every Sunday evening, locals flock to the Fox Cabaret to take in the delightful comedy show known as the Sunday Service (Thesundayservice.ca), a five-person live-action blend of improvisation and short-form games that’s garnered national attention, and multiple award nominations for the comedians who make up the troupe.

In a town where most buildings look like they were built last Thursday, Strathcona is an old soul with a checkered past and an uncertain future, as local housing prices continue to climb at a New York-esque pace. So far, Strathcona has maintained its multicultural and economically diverse sense of community with artist studios and independent businesses vastly outnumbering Starbucks locations.

Our Perfect Day ANDREA + ROBERT, LONDON FIELDS
Full to the brim
Perhaps the beauty of an undeveloped neighbourhood is found in the multitude of locally-owned businesses thriving due to support from nearby residents. Though rent prices will continue to rise in Strathcona, breweries and other spaceencompassing businesses are managing to fi nd their way in to the area, fi lling locals with hope that Strathcona will not fall prey to generic stores and glass-fronted tower developments like some of Vancouver’s other enclaves.
EATING Breakfast will never be the same after you sample Yolk’s Restaurant and Commissary’s hashbrowns (128 East Hastings, 604-428-9655, Yolks.ca), but for a homemade-by-mom vibe, try the traditional Portuguese food at the family run Union Market (810 Union Street, 604 225 5025, Unionmarket.ca) or grab a pear baguette at Finch’s Market Cafe (501 E. Georgia., 604-558-1644).

DRINKING Under the glow of one of Hastings’ last neon signs, you’ll find the Astoria’s cheap beer and weekly dance parties (769 E. Hastings., 604-254-3636, Twitter. com/astoria25) but if you’re looking for a place where your drink looks more like a work of art and less like a can of PBR, head to the Union for their banga cocktails—a filipino term meaning ‘jar’—made with simply one glass and a stick (219 Union., 604-568-3230, theunionvancouver.ca). SHOP THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Comb through Charlie and Lee’s racks of indie labels (223 Union Street, 604-5583030, Charlieandlee.com) then head next
door to the Board of Trade, a minimalist’s retail fantasy (227 Union Street., 778- 318-9697, Boardoftradeco.com). If new threads aren’t for you, the Homesteaders Emporium (649 E Hastings., 604568-7675, Homesteadersemporium.ca) is packed with useful treasures.
“The neighbourhood of Strathcona has changed so much over the past few years. We love discovering new places while visiting old favourites. Our perfect day would start off with a stroll down Georgia Street to the Boss Bakery for some cold milk tea, a visit with friends at Onion Studios or MakerLabs, and then over to Finch’s Market for some picnic treats to enjoy at MacLean Park.”
HOMEWARE / DESIGN SHOPPING Prepare to swoon at London Fields’ assortment of vintage housewares and trinkets (682 E. Hastings., 604-379-1087, Londonfieldsshoppe.com) or step back in time at The Antique Market (1324 Franklin St., 604-875-1434, Antiquesdirect.ca).
BEST PLACES TO GRAB A BEER IN STRATHCONA Forget the frat-house-style pubcrawls, the new way to imbibe en mass is the brewery crawl—you can barely throw a growler in Strathcona without hitting a craft brewery. Bomber Brewery (1488 Adnac St., 604-428-7457, Bomberbrewing.com) and Off the Rail (1351 Adnac St., 604-563-5767, Offtherailbrewing. com) face each other on Adanac Street, and Callister Brewing Co. (1338 Franklin Street, 604- 5692739, Callisterbrewing.com) is just a stumble away. A few blocks down
Clark Street, you’ll fi nd Strangefellows (1345 Clark Dr., 604-215-0092, Strangefellowsbrewing.com); it’s a bit of a walk from the other breweries but defi nitely worth the caloric expenditure, especially once you eat one of their buttery cheese and asparagus buns. If you’re more into the bar scene, a defi nite must-visit is The Heatley (696 East Hastings., 604-336-3958, Facebook.com/ theheatley) where you might catch live bluegrass or any number of talented local performers.

LANDMARKS Looking for an urban oasis? Relax at McLean Park (Keefer and Heatley) or stroll through Strathcona Community Garden (800 Prior Street). 3 CHEAP DATES IN STRATHCONA
EVENTS The East Side Culture Crawl in November is a four day visual arts, design and crafts festival with over 20,000 people visiting artists in their studios (778-9607565, Culturecrawl.ca). Show your date that your pioneer skills go beyond collecting take-out menus by signing up for a workshop at The Homesteaders Emporium (649 E. Hastings St., 604568-7675, Homesteadersemporium.ca). You and your date can bond over your newfound ability to make candles, ginger beer, Kimchi, butcher a rabbit or skin some animal hides. Yes, some workshops are more conducive to romance

Packed with restaurants that boast guaranteed lineups, Hastings-Sunrise is slowly transitioning from a primarily residential neighbourhood to a key contributor to Vancouver’s bounteous restaurant scene. It’s also home to the newly-minted Brewery District, where some of the city’s best craft beers are concocted. Considering the (relative) affordability and convenience (you can get pretty much get anywhere in 20 minutes), it’s a no-brainer why historic Hastings-Sunrise is on the up.

Real estate rush
Comparatively untouched when it comes to Vancouver’s real-estate market, the city’s top developers are flocking to Hastings Street to get their stake in the fi nal frontier of Vancouver real estate.
EATING Whether you’re in search of the city’s best tacos at Tacofino Commissary, (2327 E Hastings St, 604-253-8226, Tacofino. com), a new take on Vietnamese at Mr Red Café, (2234 E Hastings St, 604-710-9515), or the only Palestinian restaurant in Vancouver in Tamam, (2616 E Hastings St, 604-6207078, Tamam.ca), HastingsSunrise has it all.

DRINKING Get into the local craft beer scene at tasting lounges in what is slowly becoming the Brewery District, with rooms such as Parallel 49 Brewing (1950 Triumph St, 604-558-2739, Parallel49brewing.com). Or, for fun cocktails, sip rum-based tropical drinks out of coconuts at The Waldorf’s Tiki Bar (1489 E Hastings St, 604-253-7141, Atthewaldorf.com). SHOP THE NEIGHBOURHOOD You’ll love browsing the plethora of edgy, independent shops on Hastings.
Baaad Anna’s is not your grandmother’s yarn store, with eco-friendly yarn, knitting supplies and classes galore (2667 E Hastings St, 604-255-2577, Baaadannas.com). Dayton Boots boasts die-hard fans like Angelina Jolie (2250 E Hastings St, 604-253-6671, Daytonboots.com), and find everything from 18th-century poetry to local vinyl records at Horses Records (2447 E Hastings St, 604-3366776, Horsesrecords.tumblr.com).
HOMEWARE/DESIGN The Gourmet Warehouse is the ultimate home and cookware shop for those who consider themselves able chefs at home (1340 E. Hastings St, 604-253-3022, Gourmetwarehouse.ca). As for home décor, check out the local handcrafted goods at Tiny Finery (2162 E Hastings St, 604-569-2171). ATTRACTIONS The Miracle Mile statue

marks the historic event where two men ran a mile in under four minutes, but for those of us who wish to relax at an equally historic site, try New Brighton Park. EVENTS Hastings Park is home to some of Western Canada’s biggest events: from the family-friendly Fair at the PNE (Pne.ca) to the annual sartorial showdown, the Deighton Cup derby (Deightoncup.com).
6 SPECIALTY FOOD STORES TO SHOP LIKE A CHEF A richly multi-cultural and diverse community like Hastings-Sunrise comes with its perks: you get access to a wide array of specialty foods. Here are the best places in the neighbourhood (if not the city) to stock your fridge and pantry. Les Amis du Fromage stocks well over 400 cheeses from around the world, with at least 150 from Canada (843 E Hastings St., 604253-4218, Buycheese.com). Can we say cheese, please?
East Village Bakery is the go-to place for carb junkies, whether you’re gluten-intolerant or not, you need to try the made-fromscratch artisan baked goods here. Get one (or a few) of the signature Callebaut Chocolate Banana Bundt Cakes (2166 E Hastings St., 604-568-5600, Eastvillagebakery.com). Known to locals as “The Drive,” Commercial Drive sits on the axis of the Expo & Millennium Skytrain lines and the 99 B-Line bus. The kind of neighbourhood where merchants support one another, residents greet each other in the street, and your servers are likely to tell you about the last time they smoked a bag of green, Commercial Drive exhibits the kind of authentic, neighbourly affection that most Vancouverites crave. What was once the city’s Little Italy is now a bustling, yet laid-back community that’s reminiscent of a simpler time. 70

SHOP THE NEIGHBOURHOOD The Drive is renowned by locals for its extensive grocery offering, so start with the classic Donald’s Market (2279 Commercial Dr., 604-255-1440, Donaldsmarket.com). From there, head to Gatley a women’s clothing and accessories shop with a focus on local merchandise–plus, all their product is sweatshop-free. In want of a trendy Commercial Drive t-shirt? Hurry down, owner Wendy can barely keep them in stock (1136 Commercial Dr., 604-875-1836, Gatley.ca). If books are more your thing, fear not. The Drive is home to one of Vancouver’s best used book stores: Cantebury Tales Bookstore (2010 Commercial Dr., 604-568-3511).
EATING The Charlatan (1447 Commercial Dr., 604253-2777, Thecharlatanrestaurant.com) and Tangent Café (2095 Commercial Dr., 604-5584641, Tangentcafe.ca) each offer a relaxed dining experience–both have southfacing patios that are perfect at brunch time. When craving a burger, there’s nowhere better than The Cannibal Café, the organic B.C. beef can be swapped for a locally-acclaimed house-made veggie patty (1818 Commercial Dr., 604-558-4199, Cannibalcafe.ca). DRINKING St. Augustine’s sixty rotating taps feature the best of the local beer scene–order the nachos to help keep your wits about you on a heavy-liquor night (2360 Commercial Dr., 604-569-911, Staugustinesvancouver.com). For fine cocktails and a seemingly endless whisky list, check out Commercial veteran Fets Whisky Bar (1230 Commercial Dr., 604-2557771, Whiskykitchen.ca).
HOMEWARE / DESIGN SHOPPING Don’t let the association with the low-end clothing store fool you, Exposure Home carries a plethora of mid-range furniture and accessories lines (1616 Commercial Dr., 604-253-5808, Exposurehome.ca). For a more casual décor shopping experience, try Wonderbucks; their furniture selection is both modern and affordable—a mantra we can get behind (1803 Commercial Dr., 604-253-0510, Wonderbucks.com). ATTRACTIONS Host to many of The Drive’s festivals and events, Grandview Park is home to a playground, public restroom facility, and a war memorial. Overlooking Vancouver’s beautiful downtown, it’s a fitting location for any outdoor event (Vancouver.ca).

“I’m a coffee drinker – there’s a new place at Commercial and 13th called Bakery Sate that has amazing pastries and really good coffee. It’s close to Bandidas, which is great because I usually spend my mornings in the restaurant working. “My favourite restaurant on the Drive is The Red Pagoda – the peanut satay is everyone’s favourite. I also really like Naruto Sushi and Café Kathmandu, right on the same block as Bandidas. “What I love about the Drive is that there are lots of small businesses where you can support a person rather than a corporation. I do all of my grocery shopping here, mainly at Donald’s Market and Dollar Grocer. I like to go to specific places for specific things, like I’ll go to Santa Barbara for their crazy cheese counter and The First Ravioli Store for pasta. Triple A Market is my favourite for produce – they have really good mushrooms. “No day on The Drive would be complete without visiting the parks. I like to get a gelato from Dolce Amore and take it to Victoria Park.”

UPCOMING EVENTS November’s Eastside Culture Crawl, (Culturecrawl.ca) hosts Vancouver’s arts, crafts, and design talent, annually promoteing visual arts through exhibits, presentations, and open studios to increase awareness and appreciation. This year marks the fourth annual free Christmas on The Drive event (Thedrive. ca), which features carriage rides, crafts, and live performances. Due to its roots as Vancouver’s own Little Italy, each June Commercial Drive plays host to Italian Day (Italianday.ca). As the birthplace of the Car-Free Vancouver festival (Carfreevancouver.org), a full 15 blocks of The Drive are closed for the event, which includes music, art, activities, food, and more.
EAT YOUR WAY THROUGH 5 CONTINENTS ON COMMERCIAL DRIVE La Mezcaleria (1622 Commercial Dr., 604-559-8226, Lamezcaleria.ca) is easily the best Mexican eatery on The Drive. Though the food is great, the real draw of South America Boteco Brasil (2545 Nanaimo St., 778-379-7995, Boteco.ca) is the experience–loud, casual, and social, there’s often a Brazilian band playing onstage. Join in on the fun and hit the dance floor. The website for Europe La Grotta Del Formaggio (1791 Commercial Dr., 604255-3911, Lgdf.ca) proclaims them to be a local legend, and it’s hard to argue against the fact that the Bruzzese family is Vancouver’s authority on Italian foods. Order a deli sandwich
and relish in its authenticity. Gojo Little African Cafe (2838 Commercial Dr., 604-708-5394, gojocafe.com) is an authentic Ethiopian eatery, offering the traditional Injera (a pancake-like flatbread) in lieu of utensils. If you like spice, try the Mesir Wot – a lentil dish where the beans are stewed with hot Ethiopian paprika. Go early to Kishimoto Japanese Kitchen (2054 Commercial Dr., 604-255-5550), put your name on the extensive self-serve list, and don’t wander far. If you aren’t there when your name is called, you’re back to the bottom of the list. Don’t worry, the Triple Salmon Roll is worth it.

For a casual pint and some good pub grub, try the Red Lion Bar & Grill (2427 Marine Drive, 604-926-8838, Redlionbarandgrill.com) for the closest thing to a real English pub in West Van.

When the kids come over we’d go for scrambled eggs or an omelette at Savary Island Pie Company. A walk on the seawall is a must. Affectionately known as LoLo, Lower Lonsdale offers urban living on gorgeous waterfront. With a public plaza complete and fast access to downtown, this ’hood is experiencing exciting growth With views of downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park, the Lions Gate Bridge, and the harbour, Lower Lonsdale may be best known for its public market and the SeaBus terminal. But there’s much more to it than dreamy panoramas. The area is quickly transforming into a vibrant, dynamic community with more restaurants, cafes, salons, spas, services, and fitness facilities moving in every day. The vision for the neighbourhood centres on improved waterfront access and the forthcoming Shipbuilders’ Plaza, a gathering place with indie shops and greenspace.

Easy access
Many young professionals are flocking to Lower Lonsdale because of its slightly more affordable real estate than Vancouver proper. With a 10- to 15-minute Seabus commute to downtown, Lower Lonsdale is considered by many to be more convenient than the likes of Burnaby or Richmond. Developers are acting fast, building young family-friendly condo buildings along the waterfront, with views of the glassy skyline across the inlet.
EATING Il Castello Pizzeria (119 2nd Street East; 604-987-4992, Ilcastellopizzeria.com) has brought authentic Neapolitan pies to the North Shore, while Gusto de Quattro (1 Lonsdale Avenue; 604-924-4444, Quattrorestaurants.com) serves rustic Italian fare familystyle. Soothing fondues are on offer at Burgoo (3 Lonsdale Avenue; 604-904-0933, Burgoo. ca); mussels and frites star at the District Brasserie (13 Lonsdale Avenue; 778-338-4938, Eatatdistrict.com). Go to Pier 7 (25 Wallace Mews; 604-929- 7437, Pierseven.ca) for Ocean Wise seafood with a view, or have a bite of the schnitzel and spätzle at the long-standing Jägerhof (71 Lonsdale Avenue; 604-980-4316, Jagerhof.ca). You won’t regret it. DRINKING Tap & Barrel (8 Lonsdale Avenue; 604-638-2339, Tapandbarrel.com) has recently moved into the ‘hood, and here’s where you’ll find the spotlight shining on B.C.’s
best wine and beer, all on tap. (Wine fl ights are on special on Wednesdays for $9.95). They also have a killer craft-beer mac and cheese to soak up all those suds. Beer lovers will also be blissed out at Green Leaf Brewing Co., a craft brewery in the Lonsdale Quay Market (123 Carrie Cates Court; 604-9848409, Greenleaf brew.com) with a view that can’t be beat. Sailor Hagar’s Brew Pub (86 Semisch Avenue; 604-9843087, Sailorhagarspub.com) is a local institution, with 18 beers on tap as well as water views. HOMEWARE/DESIGN The purveyors of fine goods at the Mill (163 1st Street East, 604-770-1338, Themill.ca) carry sleek reclaimed wood tables, mid-century chairs, and minimalist, hand-made sculptures, among other objects. Local artists specializing in glass, ceramics, textiles, and reclaimed wood have
original designs for sale at Favourite in the public market (Lonsdalequay.com). And although new resident Moulé (100 1st Street East; 604-990-9012, Moulestores.com) sells predominantly clothes, it also carries unique décor items like skull candles, owl sculptures, and funky glassware.

You can’t miss the giant rotating Q next to the Lonsdale Quay Market, but a little to the east is the recently reconstructed historic pier. Extending 700 ft. over Burrard Inlet, it offers 360-degree views of the North Shore mountains and the downtown skyline and dates back to the early 1900s, when the shipbuilding industry in the region got off the ground. EVENTS The Shipyards Night Market is abuzz with activity every Friday from May to September (Northshoregreenmarkets. com), and Saturday Summer Sessions are free outdoor concerts in Shipbuilders Square (Satsummersessions.ca). Come winter, the Pipe Shop hosts special events like the Deja Vu Vintage Market (Lowerlonsdale.ca).

My Perfect Day YAVANNA ARNOLD, SKOAH
Yavanna Arnold is an active member of the LoLo community, both as a resident and as the owner of Skoah LoLo, a spa and skin-care centre. “On my ideal Lower Lonsdale day, I love to get up early and run or walk the North Shore Spirit Trail; it’s so beautiful. Then I go to the Juicery Co. for a Local Rose before a facial at Skoah. Then I come down to the market for fresh fruit and veggies and fish. After that I meet up with friends or family; I love the patio tables at Tap & Barrel. The hardest part is deciding where we’re going to go, because there’s always something going on. And it’s only going to get better.”

Nature’s Playground
Your outdoor toys won’t gather dust in Lynn Valley. Whether it’s road biking, blading or longboarding the mostly car-free serpentine rainforest roads of the Seymour Demonstration Forest, or hopping on a full-suspension steed to tackle downhill of all levels, being stationary in this ‘hood isn’t really an option.
EATING Before a hike through Lynn Canyon, hit Tommy’s Café (1308 Ross Road; 604-9880174, Tommycaters.com) for waffles or the “Mountain Man breaky,” a six-egg omelette with bacon, ham, and sausage, alongside two waffles, four perogies, and beans. Stop in at the Lynn Canyon Café (3690 Park Road, 604-984-9311, Lynnvalleycentre. ca) for a Rasta Wrap with jerk chicken salad, or pick up cheap and cheerful sushi specials from Yama Sushi (1232 Ross Rd., 604-988-0082, Yamasushi.ca). DRINKING The Black Bear Neighbourhood Pub (1177 Lynn Valley Road,604-990-8880) pours Stanley Park Windstorm Pale Ale and Howe Sound Brewers’ Bitter, among other craft nectars. Browns Socialhouse (1255 Lynn Valley Road, 604-971-5299, Brownssocialhouse.com) always has its Social lager flowing, as well as cocktails like frozen bellinis and basil-grapefruit martinis.
HOMEWARE/DESIGN Red Tulip Gift Gallery (116 1199 Lynn Valley Road, inside the mall; 604-924-2411, Theredtulip. ca) has more than natural soaps and flameless candles; check out its elegant First Nations glass platters and silver serving spoons. The adorable and historic End of the Line General Store (4193 Lynn Valley Road, 604-904-2366) carries paintings by local artists and many cute gifts. ATTRACTIONS Surrounded by Jurassic-sized
The new team leader of North Shore Rescue, Lynn Valley resident Mike Danks is a father of three and a fire fighter with the City of North Vancouver. “The perfect day for us is to get on our mountain bikes and go for a ride go up to Lynn Valley square, grab a Booster Juice and hang out in that square for a while. Then breakfast at Tommy’s. Then we ride our bikes to Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve and do a few loops there then go for a swim under the Lynn Creek bridge. Then we ride our bikes to the water park just up the street from our place; our kids will go bananas while we sit down and have a coffee and chill out. A perfect day would also include a rescue at some point. Rescues are my passion. Then drinks at Browns with my wife while the kids are with a babysitter.”
ferns, the must-see Lynn Canyon suspension bridge stretches 50 metres above tumbling waters and treacherous pools (Lynncanyon.ca). Lynn Valley’s Mount Fromme—along with Cypress and Seymour—is where North Shore mountainbikeing was born. Back in the 1980s, trail builders and local government worked together to preserve sensitive forest floors by building skinnies, ladders, teeter-totters and bridges. EVENTS
Summertime offers Live in Lynn Valley village concerts, free outdoor performances of everything from rock to jazz to swing (Lynnvalleyvillage. com). From September to June, catch Friday Night Live, a variety-show arts series (Fnlnorthvan.com). The ‘hood parties for almost 24 hours straight every year at Lynn Valley Days. Adults dance the night away to a live band then (bleary eyed) take the kids to the pop-up county fair—and its rides, including a mechanical bull and epic bouncy castles of all sizes—bright and early
BEST ALTERNATIVES TO THE GROUSE GRIND If you want to crank your heart rate up without the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds at the Grind, you’ve got your pick of challenging trails in Lynn Valley. Lynn Loop is five kilometres of gorgeous forested terrain, some of it flat by the river and other parts uneven and steep, with lots
of exposed roots to keep you on your toes. Extend that hike by pushing on to Lynn Peak, which ascends to spectacular vistas of Mount Seymour, Grouse Mountain, downtown Vancouver, and, on a clear day, the Strait of Georgia. The 14-kilometre Norvan Falls trail offers jaw-droppingly
beautiful views of rushing water beneath the towering peak of Goat Mountain. You can access the Baden Powell Trail near the parking lot of Lynn Headwaters Regional Park and sweat along the steep mountain slopes and over creeks all the way to Grouse and back if you’ve got time.

THROW YOUR OWN
BLOCK PART Y
I
1. Select a date. If you choose summer, your neighbours might be away; if it’s spring, Mother Nature is less cooperative. Enlist someone next door, a strata member or property manager to help organize the details. 2. If you plan to close your street, apply for a permit. Visit Vancouver.ca to fill out the online application—permits and insurance are free, but 65 percent of neighbours on the designated street must consent to the idea.
3. Send out invitations by email, deliver door-to-door, or spread the news with posters—the more the merrier. Invite neighbours to share their talents and lead a game or event (calling all jugglers
and girl scouts). It makes sure everyone is involved.
4. Apply for financial help. The Vancouver Foundation’s Neighbourhood Small Grants Program (Neighbourhoodsmallgrants.ca) offers money (up to $500) to help engage communities—block parties qualify. Applications (open from Feb. 15 to Apr. 4, 2016) take a few weeks to process so apply in advance of your event.
5. Plan party details. Will it be potluck? Will someone roll out a barbecue? Have everyone bring their own chairs and folding tables to line the centre of the street, hang flags and pennants and drape tablecloths. Make sure to keep
track of food assignments so you don’t end up with 20 desserts and two appetizers. (Evite works well here, as it will also send out date reminders.)
6. On block party day, pick up Citydesignated street barricades from the community centre closest to you. Get the kids involved to decorate the pavement with chalk, set up craft tables, or make a name-tag station.
7. Like it or not, the party ends at sunset as per City bylaw. Push barricades to the side of the road to return to the community centre the next day. Enlist a good crew to help with clean up and make sure to involve the kids. —Amanda Ross

n the not too distant past, neighbours exchanged hellos over the backyard fence or on the street. Barbecues were known to break out spontaneously on warm summer nights and everyone would bring something to throw on the grill. Nowadays, those same backyards are often filled with laneway houses and you’re more likely to see a for-sale sign staked on a lawn than a Block Parent sheet in a window. But it doesn’t have to be so: there’s a perfect way to get to know that new family next door and the couple living in the laneway house—even the entire apartment block on the corner: a new take on the old-fashioned block party. Here’s how.
