For most of us, a new year always starts with a sense of optimism for the future, but we know 2023 is going to be a challenging year for many in business.
With interest rates at a 30-year high, inflation predicted to persist, supply chain issues and a cost of living crisis hitting consumer confidence, there are many challenges for Humber businesses to deal with this year, but I know that many of the fantastic businesses in the Humber region we call home will not only rise to these challenges, they will thrive on them – and the Chamber of Commerce is always there, as it has been since 1837, to support them and help them on their way.
There is so much going on in the Humber, it is quite inspiring. You just have to look at the renewable energy sector and the work which is gathering pace to decarbonise the Humber, which is one of Europe’s biggest emitters of C02.
In the month that COP27 took place, I attended the launch at The House of Lords, hosted by Baroness Redfern, of the excellent Humber 2030 Vision document. The Humber Cluster is being promoted as being “the most important tool in the box” to achieving Net Zero and a speech by Shadow Climate Minister, Ed Miliband, echoed the same sentiments.
A few weeks later, Ed Miliband visited the Chamber of Commerce offices having asked the Chamber to get all of the key players in the Humber to meet him so he could hear for himself what was happening and what businesses’ frustrations were.
This was an excellent meeting and those present reinforced what fantastic work is being done in the Humber on Carbon Reduction. It also demonstrates the ability of the Chamber and its team to pull together such high level and influential meetings for the good of the region.
The Chamber has also relaunched its events programme for 2023. The Northern Lincolnshire Business Awards in May will again be a highlight of the year for many South Bank businesses whose success will be recognised and celebrated.
Chamber Expo on June 6 will be one of the key events in Humber Business Week which showcases a diverse range of companies from around the Humber. It is always a great opportunity to put your business in the spotlight and network with so many business folk.
I know I am biased, but I thought Chamber Expo was the best event of the week last year! The Mercure Hull Grange Park Hotel did us proud, with a fantastic venue and great food, but the main congratulations go to the Chamber Team for organising a brilliant event after two years of Covid.
There were many exhibitors who put on excellent displays with over 100 guests at the lunch with Cllr Mike Ross, Leader of Hull City Council, who talked about his vision for the City after being in post for only a month.
Later in the summer we will also be holding another of our popular Race Days at Market Rasen Racecourse – last year’s event was bathed in sunshine and guests had a fabulous Corporate Day at the Jockey Club owned National Hunt meeting.
Everyone enjoyed the glorious weather, lovely food, great company and superb racing at this most picturesque of courses.
I am a keen race goer myself and a regular at The Cheltenham Festival, but I did something I have never done before - judge ‘the best turned out horse’ and present the winning jockey his
Cup and sponsors presents. It was fabulous stuff!
The Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce is right at the centre of business in the Humber Estuary and will lead the way on all fronts. As a Chamber member, you are part of the team, benefiting from the services that we offer and I would encourage you to make time this year to attend some of the great events we run.
Whether it is one of the Business Award Ceremonies or one of our face-to-face networking events, we would love to see you there and learn more about your business. These events are where you will have the opportunity to talk openly and learn what other members are doing in their businesses in the face of all the challenges that undoubtedly lay ahead for us all.
Good luck for 2023, and remember the Chamber is always here for you. Why not give the team a call on 01482 324976

Associated British Ports (ABP) is the first UK port operator to trial a hydrogen fuelled tractor in its container terminal at the Port of Immingham.
This joint pilot project received funding from ORE Catapult through Innovate UK’s Hydrogen Innovation Initiative (HII), following funding of initial feasibility from the Department for Transport’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition. The Terberg hydrogen terminal tractor has been tested at the UK’s largest port by volume of tonnage, alongside a mobile hydrogen filling station provided by Air Products.
This demonstration is a key activity in the bid to decarbonise port operations, and an important step in the creation, delivery, and use of hydrogen at the Port of Immingham. Alongside this, HII is developing market, technology, and economic assessments of hydrogen technologies to support the larger UK industry with H2 adoption.
Simon Bird, Regional Director of the Humber ports said: “This demonstration of using hydrogen in port equipment in Immingham has been able to highlight the challenges and benefits of using this zero-emission energy in our port.
It shows our customers how forward thinking we are in meeting the need to de-carbonise in the port and it’s great we’ve been able to collaborate with all the various partners in its delivery.”
“Decarbonising the maritime sector goes beyond cutting emissions at sea, and this trial demonstrates that hydrogen will play a significant part in UK’s port operations and shed their dependence on fossil fuels.
Maritime Minister Baroness Vere said: “Decarbonising the maritime sector goes beyond cutting emissions at sea, and this
trial demonstrates that hydrogen will play a significant part in UK’s port operations and shed their dependence on fossil fuels.
“We have supported 86 projects so far through our Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, showing the world that the UK is serious about cleaning up the sector and leading the charge in demonstrating innovative technologies in an operational setting.”
Suzanne Lowe, Air Products’ Vice President and General Manager - UK commented: “As a first mover committed to the energy transition, Air Products’ is helping drive progress towards the government’s urgent focus of decarbonising the UK’s hard-to-abate sectors and reducing fossil fuel dependency. Through successful implementation, this trial will help provide an important pathway to decarbonise port-related heavy goods equipment.
“We are proud to be enabling ABP in this project through the provision of hydrogen and refuelling infrastructure. Our collaboration marks a further extension of the strong partnership we have established with ABP as we work towards building the largest green hydrogen facility in the UK.”
Alisdair Couper, MD of Terberg DTS UK Ltd added,” “Terberg Special Vehicles started testing its concept Hydrogen Fuel Cell YT
Terminal tractor in Mainland Europe firstly in Rotterdam and more recently the Port of Antwerp. This latest trial phase is the first of its type in the UK.
ABP Ports have been a long-term customer for Terberg Special Vehicles and have operated a fleet of YT 4x2 and RT 4x4 tractors over the years in their mixed role environments. This is an exciting opportunity to explore this new groundbreaking technology in a dynamic real-world scenario.”
Lauren Hadnum, ORE Catapult’s Clean Maritime Manager said: “This project excitingly highlights the increasing technology readiness of vehicles utilising hydrogen fuel in UK port operations, creating a clear demand signal for many HII project partners. Major learnings from this project will have decarbonisation impacts for port vehicles, vessels and the wider hydrogen supply chain. The Humber is well placed to develop this hydrogen value chain; via Offshore Wind energy availability, local demand, and strong system level collaborations such as demonstrated in this project.”
The project has been a collaboration between ABP, Terberg, Air Products, and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult.

Associated British Ports (ABP) is investing £32 million in port equipment in the Humber to maintain customer demand as part of a wider Group investment.
Afive-year strategy is being rolled out which involves purchasing new cranes, the full refurbishment of existing cranes and investing in landside equipment. The plan has involved looking at the eco-friendliness of new plant and equipment ensuring that ABP continue to invest in environmentally friendly and sustainable equipment.
The ongoing strategy in the Humber has been split between investment in mobile harbour cranes and hydraulic cranes – the first of which the Mantsinen 300M, the world’s largest hydraulic crane, is due at the port of Immingham late April.
Simon Bird, Regional Director for the Humber ports said: “This significant investment shows the confidence we have to continue to grow and invest to ensure the Humber ports are futureproofed when it comes to the latest technology in cranes and cargo handling equipment.
“Our strategy is about ensuring we have a versatile mix of cranes to cargo mix and that we can provide additional capacity to meet growing volumes of cargo. As a port operator we remain resilient and give our customers what they need, and they want to know what we have is reliable and efficient.”
The Covid-19 pandemic delayed the rollout of the strategy, but now orders are being placed and equipment is arriving. The first delivery in December 2021 were four Konecranes Reach Stackers which run on hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) costing £1.6 million This will be followed by the Mantsinen 300m Hybrilift hydraulic crane plus various attachments costing nearly £3 million in spring.
A team from the Port of Immingham consisting of operations and engineers visited the

Mantsinen factory in Finland last month to check on its build progress. It also gave them an opportunity to test the new crane simulator and see how it handles.
The incoming plant and machinery will replace older infrastructure, while existing cranes will undergo a million-pound major refurbishment. Those being refurbished include the Butterley cranes built in the1990s for the width of the
locks in the ports of Immingham and Hull.
It has not yet been decided what some of the future cranage and attachments will be, giving ABP time to engage with the port community and ensure cranes are fit for purpose. It will include mobile harbour cranes and material handlers, with some more Reach Stackers and forklifts being ordered.
Bulks, break bulks and project cargo are all being catered for, to ensure offloading and delivery are covered. This includes a spend of £16m on maintenance capex on cargo handling landslide within Immingham Container Terminal (ICT) and Hull Container Terminal (HCT), and the stocking of spare parts as part of the port’s resilience.
What can be assured by ABP is that efficiency is a deciding factor, to ensure efficient cargo handling, and loading and unloading times are kept to a minimum.

Immingham team have returned from Germany where they have been carrying out the final factory acceptance testing of the port’s three new mobile harbour cranes.
The Liebherr 420s will be arriving later in November from Rostock in northern Germany. The new investment has cost £9.7 million with an additional £500k on new Nemag grabs. They will be a welcome addition to the port, the largest by volume of tonnage in the Humber.
The new cranes use the Liebherr hybrid system which comprises of a diesel generator which runs on HVO and the option to switch to all electric, which achieves a greater performance while reducing fuel consumption at the same time. The sustainable hybrid drive reduces the emission of CO2 and other harmful substances but also gives more power.
Simon Bird, Regional Director of the Humber ports said: “This is another great investment in the port. It offers our customers a range of equipment, these being specially optimised for vessels in the post-panamax class.
“It’s part of our wider strategy investment in future proofing the Humber ports and giving our customers the confidence that the ports remain resilient, and we are giving them what they need in having reliable and efficient cranage.”
“This is another great investment in the port. It offers our customers a range of equipment, these being specially optimised for vessels in the post-panamax class.”
The new cranes offer greater versatility being able to be deployed on any quay, though primarily they will be used for bulk cargo handling and scrap handling. They have a 124tonne lifting capability, and offer greater safety improvements in the driver’s cab, and allow
for better fleet management, which means short downtimes and full visibility of the whole fleet.

Associated British Ports (ABP), in partnership with cross sector stakeholders, successfully completed its annual Humber Oil Spill Incident Management Exercise (HUMEX) during November.
The exercise works to test the processes involved in managing an oil spill within the Humber. ABP is the Statutory and Competent Harbour Authority for the Humber Estuary and is responsible for ensuring the safety of marine operations within the ports and estuary. >>>
continued from page 13...
As part of its duty of care to the Humber, each year ABP Humber conduct an Incident Management Exercise to test the Oil Spill Contingency Plan “Humber Clean”.
The oil spill scenario was simulated on the release of approximately 5mt of DERV, east of the Immingham Oil Terminal, due to the rupture of an 80k litre road tanker at an adjacent site which entered the Estuary via the North Beck Drain. As in previous years, this was a fictional scenario used by the team and was not based on any actual incidents at the port.
As part of its duty of care to the Humber, each year ABP Humber conduct an Incident Management Exercise to test the Oil Spill Contingency Plan “Humber Clean”.
Marine Response Centre team leaders worked on individual responsibilities to move through the exercise, testing the many processes in place to ensure a quick containment and management of the scenario.
As a first response to any notification of an oil spill, ABP Tier 1 teams can be deployed to tackle the spill. Adler and Allan operate as Tier 2 contractors for ABP, and upon their arrival would support the incident management team with containment and clear-up operations.
This training opportunity enabled ABP’s Marine Response Centre located at Grimsby Port Office to test many aspects of incident management including communications, ‘Send Word Now’ for cascaded alerts, and on this occasion, a limited management structure within the OSCP plan.
A full communications check was completed by ABP with organisations such as the Humber
Emergency Planning Services, Environment Agency and the MCA and a live test spraying was conducted by the Pilot Launch Humber Venus to ensure that we fulfil our responsibilities within MCA guidelines.
Paul Bristowe, Head of Marine for ABP’s Humber ports, said: “HUMEX provides an ideal opportunity to test the team and processes to ensure we have a safe and effective oil spill response at high readiness on the Humber.
The Humber Estuary is an important place and holds many designations for the habitats and wildlife, both resident and migratory, that can be found here. It’s also a busy industrial area. The exercise is a vital piece of protection to ensure that any incident can be dealt with safely and quickly to prevent damage to the environment.”

Plant efficiency is vital for all organisations and today, an increasing number of manufacturers are investing in solutions to reduce waste in steam generation.
As steam is required in almost all heavy industries with boiler operations, reducing steam waste in traps increases manufacturing efficiency. Manufacturing plants are therefore looking for energy-efficient steam traps which is increasing the sale of steam traps across the world.
According to a report from ResearchAndMarkets. com, the global steam trap market is currently witnessing stable growth. A steam trap is a mechanical valve that is used to discharge condensates and non-condensates, such
as air and carbon dioxide, from steam lines. Mechanical, thermostatic and thermodynamic traps are the most common types of steam traps available in the market.
They are commonly used in bulk storage tanks, pressure reducing valve stations, steamers, heat exchangers and reboilers. They also function as a separation point between the condensates and the steam system to create latent heat and transfer it to a specific product. Because of this, stream traps find extensive application across various industries, including oil and gas, >>>
Multi-disciplinary bridge works specialist
Spencer Group has been confirmed as the successful contractor following a strict and detailed tendering process.
Spencer Group has carried out maintenance and repair works on some of the UK’s most iconic bridges, including the Humber Bridge, Forth, Erskine, Severn and Menai bridges.
The company is currently carrying out refurbishment works on the world’s oldest suspension bridge still carrying traffic, the Union Chain Bridge, while, at the same time, also working on the Menai Suspension Bridge, the world’s second oldest operational vehicular suspension bridge.
Vital works to Corporation Road Bridge will start on Monday 6 February 2023, and a full road closure will be in place for the duration of the works which is expected to take 11 months. The full refurbishment will include key structural works, as well as improvements to the aesthetic changes to the bridge - protecting the landmark for many years to come and preserve its heritage status.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: “As part of its Grade 2 listed heritage status, it is important the
bridge remains functioning and the mechanics are in full operation to ensure the council is satisfying the statutory obligations.
“Corporation Road Bridge is a key landmark in Grimsby Town Centre and the Heritage Action Zone. These refurbishment works are going to safeguard this iconic landmark for many years to come and be a key contributor to the ongoing regeneration works in this area.”
Joe DiMauro, project manager for bridges at Spencer Group, added: “We’re delighted to work on a structure in the Humber region which is close to our headquarters in Hull. It means we’ll be able to utilise our local supply chain while drawing on our expertise in this sector. Corporation Bridge is well known to Spencer Group employees and we’ll be able to involve some of our apprentices based in the Humber region, who also played a part in the tendering process. It will be a great experience for them to work with our established bridge refurbishment teams, helping to develop their knowledge and skills in this highly specialised area.”
While the works take place, Corporation Road Bridge will be closed to all vehicles and diversion routes will be clearly signed. The bridge will remain open to pedestrians and cyclists, except
during short periods when the contractor will need to test the lifting mechanisms and the bridge will need to be fully closed.
A diversion route will be put in place while the bridge is closed to traffic. Motorists wishing to cross to the west side of the bridge (Sainsbury’s side) will be directed from Westgate roundabout, along Pyewipe Road and onto Corporation Road. Larger vehicles will be asked to straddle both lanes at the traffic signals. Those heading to the east side of the bridge will be directed to Lockhill roundabout.
Motorists, including HGV traffic, are strongly encouraged to follow the official signed diversion route to minimise disruption around the network. Other traffic management information will follow.
A start date for the major restoration of Corporation Road Bridge has been set following the appointment of a contractor for the scheme.

Ørsted, the world’s most sustainable energy company, has teamed up with pioneering marine farmers SeaGrown to explore the potential of using seaweed farms to boost ocean biodiversity. The new partnership aims to develop biodiversity monitoring and measurement guidelines for offshore seaweed farms.
Yorkshire-based SeaGrown already runs an offshore seaweed farm in the North Sea and, with the right species and setup, the partners believe seaweed farms could be provide a useful tool to help support native species and habitats.
Seaweed, also referred to as marine macroalgae, is becoming widely recognised by a number of international organisations to provide a huge range of benefits to the marine environment. SeaGrown and Ørsted have set out on a mission to establish data around the potential of seaweed as an ocean-climate solution by trialling a range of monitoring technologies including eDNA, remote cameras, and sonar.
Recently, seaweed cultivation has been explored as a carbon sink, with the potential to absorb significant amounts of carbon dioxide
– perhaps even more efficiently than trees. Much of the utility of seaweed as a carbon sink, however, will depend on how the seaweed is used once it has grown. There are currently no internationally recognised approaches to measuring carbon removal by seaweed, but there is huge potential for this to be an important part of the carbon puzzle and unique role our oceans play to mitigate climate change impacts.
Farming seaweed is also being considered for its contribution to improving biodiversity in our oceans - not only does it remove carbon (reducing acidity) and produce oxygen, it can also provide a substrate for marine organisms to grow on and act as a shelter for juvenile fish.
Seaweed species such as kelp grow rapidly via photosynthesis, so they use only sunlight and the naturally occurring nutrients in the sea. Not only is it fast growing, it is also extremely nutritious and grows in most of our oceans. It is therefore no surprise that it has been collected in the wild by humans for thousands of years and cultivated actively since at least the 1600s.
In busy marine areas like the North Sea, multiple users depend on access to the ocean for their livelihoods and a number of areas have also been designated for the protection of marine species and habitats. Seaweed farming may have the potential to improve these ecosystems, but it must be sited in a way that works in harmony other sea-usersSeaGrown’s pilot seaweed farm off the coast of Scarborough has been carefully located with this in mind.
Benj Sykes, Ørsted’s Head of UK Environment, Consents & External Affairs, notes: “The acceleration of offshore wind deployment is vital in the global shift to a clean energy system, but it must not come at the expense of marine biodiversity. We want offshore wind to be part of the solution, not part of the problem, and getting it right always starts with understanding and measuring our impacts. Seaweed farms clearly have the potential to contribute to reducing greenhouse gases, as well as benefiting marine biodiversity. The aim of this new partnership is to look at how we can measure and confirm this, adding another tool to help protect and enhance marine habitats.”
Wave Crookes, Operations Director at SeaGrown, added: “SeaGrown is very pleased to be working with Ørsted on this important biodiversity study. Through this forwardlooking project, we are seeking to establish the best way for seaweed farming to assist ecologically-conscious operators such as Ørsted to minimize their impact and work in harmony with the marine environment to generate the green, renewable energy we all need.”

Following calls from numerous professional bodies such as the ICAEW, the Treasury has finally taken notice and delayed the introduction of MTD ITSA, much to the relief of many professionals. This delay is the fifth deferral and as quoted by the ICAEW “an opportunity to get it right”.
Victoria Atkins, financial secretary to the Treasury issued a ministerial statement outlining the changes which in summary are:
• A two-year delay until April 2026 for mandatory MTD ITSA filing.
• The minimum income reporting level increased to £50,000, with those earning more than £30,000 mandated to join the scheme in 2027.
• The situation for landlords and sole traders earning less than £30,000 will be reviewed to see if MTD ITSA can be shaped to meet the needs of smaller businesses.
• Partnerships will not be brought into MTD for ITSA as previously planned in 2025.
• Points-based penalty system to be extended to MTD ITSA filers when they join.

Established ‘by business for business’ in 1967 to bridge the gap between education and training HETA continues to thrive and expand with training centres across the region in Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe providing high quality practical engineering training supplemented by academic study from Level 3 to Level 5 with access to Higher Education through a strategic partnership with Sheffield Hallam University.
Working with over 400 companies in the region HETA not only provide young people with a start to their engineering careers they also deliver on-going upskilling training to over 1500 engineers ensuring that skills are maintained and retained within the Yorkshire and Humber region.
Amongst the many challenges facing the Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering sector in the region is staff recruitment, retention and wage inflation driven by an increasing lack of skilled and competent engineers. 85% of businesses are currently feeling the strain from a lack of skilled workers. Research suggests that 186,000 skilled engineers will be required annually until 2024 to plug the skills gap. Further compounding the skills challenge is the prediction that almost 20% of the current workforce are due to retire before 2026.
One means of mitigating these risks is to ‘grow your own’ and develop emerging young talent through employer led apprenticeship programmes. However, with such a wide range of training provision available through local further education colleges and independent training providers the decision of which to choose can be both a daunting and sometimes confusing one.
A starting point in deciding which approved apprenticeship provider to use is to undertake research into the history of those that you are entrusting the development of a loved one or a member of your staff. Indicators to consider might include date of incorporation, trading history, filed accounts and legal status.
All approved apprenticeship training providers are subject to external quality inspection through OfSted and the grade awarded resulting from inspection should be considered along with the strengths identified as part of the that inspection. In addition, employers using apprenticeship training providers are asked to anonymously rate provision and these results are published via Government websites and are easily accessible.
Equally important in choosing a provider is to consider the success of that provider both in relation to the qualifications they deliver as part of an apprenticeship and overall completion rates of apprentices on programme. Whilst neither are necessarily in the public domain it is highly recommended, in making a choice of provider, that questions are asked to ensure that you are giving the apprentice the very best chance of successfully completing their apprenticeship with a provider with a proven track record of successful delivery.
The capacity and capability to provide a career pathway for an individual is a significant consideration when choosing an apprenticeship training provider ensuring that the achievement of the apprenticeship is not the final destination for the apprentice but simply the starting point of a lifelong learning journey that might include entry into Higher Education or the availability of upskilling courses to maintain accreditation and competencies.
Choosing an apprenticeship training provider should not be taken lightly and should be subject to the same diligence you would apply if you were thinking of changing jobs and your employer.

The University of Hull’s commitment to sustainability and social justice has been recognised in the first-ever QS World University Sustainability rankings 2023.
In the Sustainable Institutions category of the global rankings, the University of Hull was ranked joint 55th out of 700 universities; and 9th in the UK (out of 68 universities).
The rankings, which compare 700 of the world’s top universities against a range of environmental and social sustainability metrics
from research impact to graduate outcomes, focus on how universities are taking action to tackle the world’s greatest Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) challenges.
There are two main categories to the ranking: an Environmental Impact category and a Social Impact category. Institutes can rank separately
in each of these categories, in both of them and overall. Each category contributes 50% towards the overall rank.
Every university that is included in the sustainability rankings had to demonstrate research connected to sustainability and have a clear, published strategy on climate action.
Professor Dave Petley, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hull, said: “I am delighted that the University of Hull is taking its place amongst the universities who are leading the way on a global scale when it comes to sustainability.
“Our University strategy 2030 focuses on two of the most important challenges of our generation: environmental sustainability and social justice. These resonate strongly with me and my own academic research interests and I’m looking forward, along with colleagues, students and the wider community, to continuing to make a positive difference and help move this agenda forward.
“Measuring the environmental and social impact of institutions, the QS rankings are a helpful way to benchmark the progress the University is making towards sustainability, relative to other sustainability-focused institutions who are also championing the planet’s most challenging issues.”
Highlights of the University’s sustainability rankings include:
• Environmental Impact ranking (global) – Sustainable Institutions category: joint 55th (out of 700 institutions globally) and 9th in UK (out of 68 UK institutions)
• 27th in UK for Environmental Impact ranking performance overall (out of 68 UK institutions); Sustainable Education category – 29th in UK (out of 68 UK institutions).
The University of Hull is ranked (out of 700 institutions globally) in the 241-260 group for performance overall; 190th for Environmental Impact performance overall and 402nd for Social Impact overall performance.
The rankings assess an institution’s commitments to building a sustainable world with emphasis on their influence beyond their own campus.
The most successful universities are those which are able to demonstrate sustainability outwardly. National-level data has also been included, covering aspects such as safety and tolerance, clean air and water, and tolerance and freedom. This is because students are keen to know the location they choose to study in –as well as their university – is working towards a sustainable future.
The major locations represented include the United States, with 135 institutions ranked, the United Kingdom (68), Germany (39), China, Mainland (37), Australia (33) and Italy (31).
First for sustainability is the University of California, Berkeley, with the University of Edinburgh ranked at number 4.
Of the top 100 universities, with many showing strong commitments to sustainability in both environmental and social arenas, the countries most represented are the US (30), UK (20), Australia (12), Canada (9), Sweden (4), Netherlands (3), Spain (3) and New Zealand (3).
Many of the top 100 ranked institutions were awarded their standing due to the tangible impacts that can be measured in areas beyond just operational or on-campus activity, such as the impact of their sustainability research and their reputation among staff.
The Environmental Impact category comprises three performance indicators: sustainable institutions, sustainable education and sustainable research. The Social Impact category considers five indicators: equality, knowledge exchange, impact of education, employment and opportunities, and quality of life.
To be eligible for this year’s ranking, an institution had to also be eligible for inclusion in the overall QS World University Rankings.
According to QS, as well as using this ranking, students interested in sustainability should be prepared to ask prospective universities about things like their sustainable research and commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Led by the University of Hull, the Aura Innovation Centre is a low carbon innovation centre for businesses.
Supported by a wide range of leading organisations in the region and nationally, the Centre is a collaboration with global renewable energy industry players (Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy, Equinor and Orsted), leading UK research institutions (the Universities of Sheffield and Durham), Government organisations (East Riding of Yorkshire Council, ORE Catapult, GreenPort Hull) and other organisations in the region.
The Centre, located at Bridgehead Business Park in Hessle, takes a strategic view of the low carbon sector, identifying opportunities where organisations can collaborate to innovate in order to find solutions for the challenges they face and build the region’s ability to
meet net zero targets. That might be through partnership between industry and academia for large scale long term research projects, smaller scale research and innovation working with the region’s large cohort of SMEs who are the backbone of the economy, or helping a small business access cutting edge technology that can help make their product greener.
The Centre officially opened in 2020, and now hosts an annual Festival of Green Innovation, as well as a range of large events, networking meetings and collaborative opportunities. The University and Aura are key partners with Marketing Humber in delivering the annual Waterline Summit.
The £12m Aura Innovation Centre obtained
funding from the European Regional Development Fund, Regional Growth Fund Green Port Growth Programme and match funding from the University of Hull and provides large businesses and SMEs with the space to collaborate and innovate to deliver low-carbon energy and clean growth for the Humber.
It provides a focal point for kick starting innovation through collaboration, by bringing together experts at the University of Hull with businesses (particularly the region’s small and medium size companies) in the Humber region and beyond.
More than 270 dynamic, high growth businesses have already engaged with the
Aura Innovation Centre and the University of Hull – helping them to accelerate their innovation projects in the low carbon space. It gives businesses easy access to cutting-edge facilities and technical expertise and support, specialist funded support and a space to innovate and collaborate with academic and industry experts – driving clean business growth in the Humber and beyond.
Tackling one of the world’s biggest challenges: to become a greener and more sustainable planet, the Humber’s only Net Zero Carbon Centre, at the Aura Innovation Centre, provides a focus for SMEs to access support
and collaborate. Resulting in: funding for over 270 SMES, 175 jobs and more than 260 new products and services.
In just six months following lockdown during the pandemic, the Aura Innovation Centre welcomed over 1,000 people to events such as workshops, conferences, networking and courses, with demand continuing to grow for innovative, sustainable event space.

Seven years of transformational development at Hull’s game-changing tech campus is continuing with construction underway on the final office building.
The net zero building is the final phase of leading developer Wykeland Group’s @ TheDock complex in Hull’s vibrant Fruit Market urban village. It will provide a further 11,000 sq ft of prime office space and bring 150 more advanced tech jobs to the area.
The building will complete a cluster of prime office space at the @TheDock development, which includes the pioneering Centre for Digital Innovation (C4DI) tech hub.
The @TheDock development has regenerated a previously derelict waterfront site and become the catalyst and focal point for Hull’s fast-growing tech sector.
Yorkshire-based contractor Castlehouse Construction is delivering the works, with the final building having been designed by leading architectural practice The Harris Partnership, also based in Yorkshire. The developer’s agent for the project is LHL Group, again Yorkshire-based.
A total of around 300 workers will be on site across the various stages of the construction process, with the building scheduled to be completed in summer 2023.
John Gouldthorp, Asset Manager at Hull-based Wykeland, said: “It’s great that work is now underway on this exciting development.
“@TheDock has been a tremendous success and this latest phase underlines our confidence in the continuing growth of the tech sector in Hull and the wider region.
“Our previous investments on this site have generated dozens of new digital businesses and hundreds of highly-skilled tech jobs. This final building will create exciting new opportunities to be part of one of the UK’s most successful tech communities within a building with exceptional sustainability credentials.”
Site preparation and groundworks have been completed and piling work has now begun on site.
The piling is being carried out using a rotating, screw-type method which will minimise noise disruption while foundation works are carried out, before the steel frame of the building takes shape.
Founded in 2009, Castlehouse Construction has grown into a near-£30m turnover business, delivering projects in sectors including commercial, education, retail, healthcare and residential.
Castlehouse Construction was previously contracted by Wykeland to deliver the first phase of the £20m transformation of the former Northallerton Prison site in North Yorkshire into the award-winning Treadmills mixed-used development.
Phil Dewell, Construction Director at Castlehouse Construction, said: “We’re pleased to have been appointed to build what will be a high-quality, sustainable commercial development in a prime location in Hull. “Having previously worked with Wykeland on the first phase of The Treadmills development in Northallerton, we were delighted to be chosen for this project.
“Wykeland has a track record of delivering developments which have a significant economic impact on the area they serve. The @TheDock tech campus is a perfect example of that and we’re delighted to be finishing what has been a transformational development for the city.”
The new building will have exceptional sustainability credentials, making it one of Hull’s most environment-friendly developments as well as increasing its appeal to potential occupiers keen to reduce their carbon footprint.
The building will be powered by renewable energy generated via an array of roof-mounted solar panels. A green roof formed by flowering plants and a green wall section will also support biodiversity, while adding to the building’s insulation.
The building will be rated BREEAM “Very Good” – a sustainability assessment that will put it in the top 25% nationally for non-domestic buildings.
It will have an EPC energy rating of A – the highest possible to achieve – and will be mechanically heated, cooled and ventilated by a system that uses air source heat pumps and takes heat energy from extracted air and uses it to pre-heat incoming air.
The undercroft car parking will feature electric vehicle charging points and cycle storage spaces, while energy efficient sensor lighting will also be installed within the building to reduce its carbon footprint.
The project is supported by funding received from the European Regional Development Fund.
The building is available for let to either a single business or multiple tenants, with suites from 2,250 sq ft to the full 11,000 sq ft.
To enquire about space in the new @TheDock building, please contact John Gouldthorp on 07725 673402 or at jcg@wykeland.co.uk or Ben Cooper of letting agent PPH Commercial on 01482 626912 or at ben.cooper@pphcommercial.co.uk.
An important part of your company’s marketing strategy is to promote your business with professional business stationery, leaflets, business cards, and brochures. It is therefore imperative that your brand and image are reflected through the use of high-quality print and labelling solutions.
The visual identity of your business is a priority and can help to boost the marketing of your organisation and your corporate reputation amongst the business community and your customers. Digital print solutions open up a wide range of opportunities for you to enhance emotional engagement with your consumers, therefore boosting revenue and sales targets.
Today’s commercial printers can provide innovative and professional printing services for the production of magazines, labels, brochures, advertising and product catalogues, corporate reports, and direct mail marketing materials. With superb graphic design, print and print-finishing services, experts in this sector can
oversee the full process, employing state-of-the-art reprographics and professional printing techniques.
It is expected that 72% of businesses use direct mail campaigns which are relatively inexpensive and are a great way for companies to keep their image and services in the public eye. This aspect of printing is expected to continue an upward trend in the future.
Increased demand for promotional materials from the retail, food, and beverage industries is driving the market. The commercial printing market is being driven mainly by promotional activities such as print advertising. Retail businesses that understand their target markets are including print advertising as part of their overall marketing strategy.
The introduction of ecofriendly practices, reducing the printing industry’s impact on the environment, drives the market. The market is experiencing major changes in activities and processes, slowly being replaced by sustainable systems. Many commercial printing houses are also implementing recycled paper in their processes.
Today, many businesses are using commercial printers, as they are more cost-effective and efficient for bulk printing. Professionals within the printing industry can offer cutting edge solutions for the quality production of a wide range of products, from labels to magazines.
