IF YOU BUILD IT, HE WILL COME

New Nature Memoir From Local Author Shares Unique Personal Account of the Captivating Belvoir Osprey Project

Lincolnshire author and long-term resident Simon Curtin has recently published his non-fiction book, titled If You Build It, He Will Come, about his eight-year quest to encourage the osprey back to nest near Belvoir Castle, over 200 years after they became extinct as a breeding bird. The book follows the marathon project from its humble beginnings, as a thought and ambition in the author’s mind over thirty years ago, through the many ups and downs to its ultimate conclusion, setting out the ‘ten steps to success’ for encouraging ospreys to breed. The project was not a lone effort, with Simon working alongside osprey expert Dr Tim Mackrill and colleagues at the Rutland Water project to make the project a success.

To see an osprey fish is an amazing spectacle, and one of the reasons why Simon fell in love with this bird. Ospreys were once widespread in the United Kingdom, but were unfortunately persecuted and shot by humans to extinction in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Major conservation ‘translocation’ projects were undertaken in Scotland in the 1950s and at Rutland Water in the 1990s to reestablish populations of ospreys. Simon’s hope with the book is that it will encourage the continued expansion of ospreys away from the initial few translocation points to breed in every county and region of the UK once again. It is a slow and patient process.

The migration of birds, and ospreys in particular, is an amazing phenomenon. Much has been learnt by fitting ospreys with lightweight transmitters that can track their movements over time using satellites. The male osprey in Simon’s story, known as Blue 4K, was fitted with a transmitter in 2018 and has provided some amazing data to scientists. Each Autumn he flew approximately 3,000 miles south from the Belvoir area to Guinea on the west coast of Africa, stopping off at the same favourite fishing spots to rest and eat. The sad fact is that while ospreys produce 2-3 young each year, only 20-30% of these young survive their first migration. That is why Simon is so passionate about encouraging others to start osprey projects of their own. If the platform had been sited less than a mile further east, the nest would have been in Lincolnshire rather than Leicestershire, and Simon hopes that soon Lincolnshire will have ospreys nesting too. While ospreys need waterways, canals, ponds and lakes for the fish they eat, they prefer nesting away from water, where it is generally more private. Nesting platforms sited in farmers’ hedgerows have been very successful and Simon hopes that out there in Lincolnshire is a farmer who is keen to host a platform, who will get in touch to start their own quest!

RECORD ATTENDANCE AT COUNTRYSIDE LINCS 2024

The Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS) has announced record-breaking attendance at its annual Countryside Lincs event.

Nearly 7,000 people from across Lincolnshire and beyond came to the event, which educates young minds about food and agriculture in the region.

Held at the heart of the Lincolnshire Showground on Sunday 14th April, this year’s Countryside Lincs surpassed all previous records, with families, farmers and floral enthusiasts experiencing the rich tapestry of rural heritage and agricultural innovation showcased throughout the event.

Rosie Crust, Head of Charity at the LAS, said: “We were thrilled to see such overwhelming support for Countryside Lincs this year. This remarkable turnout underscores the enduring appeal of our event and the deep-rooted connection people have with the countryside and agriculture. It’s truly a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team and exhibitors.”

Countryside Lincs offers a diverse range of activities and attractions catering to all ages and interests - from interactive farmyard experiences

to educational workshops where children can learn more about food and where it comes from.

Key highlights of this year’s event included:

• Outdoor activities: From tractor rides to Easter egg trails, attendees immersed themselves in the beauty of the Lincolnshire countryside, exploring the different zones in the blissful weather.

• Farmyard friends: Families enjoyed up-close encounters with farm animals, including sheep, cows, pigs and chickens, fostering a deeper understanding of where our food comes from.

• Hands-on workshops: Children took part in educational sessions and demonstrations on topics such as baking, floral workshops and traditional crafts, providing valuable insights into sustainable living and rural skills.

• Food and drink delights: Visitors indulged in a delicious array of locally sourced produce and refreshing beverages, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Lincolnshire.

The success of Countryside Lincs underscores the LAS’ commitment to promoting agriculture, education and rural life within the community.

Preparations are now well underway for the LAS’ flagship event, the Lincolnshire Show 2024, which will be held on 19th and 20th June.

The event, which is recognised as “Lincolnshire’s biggest day out”, is set to attract around 60,000 people, along with 2,500 animals and 500 traders or exhibitors, making it one of the most anticipated events in the region and an actionpacked day out for all the family.

This year’s Lincolnshire Show will see the return of many of the highlights from Countryside Lincs and much, much more. This includes a new Garden Show, as well as zones dedicated to aviation, discovery, sports, food, machinery and shopping, while farmers across the county show their best produce and livestock.

For more information about Countryside Lincs and other upcoming events hosted by the LAS, please visit www.lincolnshireshowground.co.uk or call 01522 522900.

An independent gallery set in Lincoln’s Cathedral Quarter

The Little Red Gallery is one of Lincoln’s largest art galleries. Located on the historic Bailgate, only seconds away from the Cathedral and the Castle, this gallery is a perfect addition to your must-see’s.

While they look deceptively small, this gallery is a rabbit warren of rooms and staircases. This is a place you definitely need to go in and explore, not somewhere that you can know in its entirety from the front door!

With a price range from as low as £20 to as high as £20,000, there is something for everyone at The Little Red Gallery. They have a broad range of artists and styles, from the modern to the historic, including works by Andy Warhol, L S Lowry, Tracey Emin, Edward Waite, Nigel Cooke, Neil Pengelly, Kealey Farmer, Kerry Darlington, Rozanne Bell, Paul Southwell, Craig Davison, Keith Drury, and so many more! With access to hundreds of artists, the list really does go on!

And to make things even easier on our pockets, they offer payment plans to help break up the cost of an artwork into easy to manage chunks so that you can always take home that perfect painting. And for the perfect gift for the person who has everything, The Little Red Gallery offer gift vouchers of any amount you could want, with no end date!

This family run, independent business is always a pleasure to visit.

The staff are all fun to talk to, always helpful, and have a vast knowledge of art and art history so if you just want to have a browse and a chat, you are always made to feel welcome. Especially if you bring cake, or so we’ve been told!

The Little Red Gallery opened almost 8 years ago and has been a hub of activity ever since! They often hold artist events, live demonstrations, new collections, and take part in almost every event on the Bailgate! This is a gallery that loves what they do and their community. Also, don’t be surprised to see a camera crew or two! The Little Red Gallery has been on various television programs such as Flog It! and BBC News, so if you see a camera, warn the staff so that they can hide!

There’s no need to whisper or hold your hands behind your back in this gallery; they love questions and silliness! In fact, you may have caught them dancing in the front room or singing along to the radio (or eating that cake we’ve heard so much about!)

Artwork is constantly changing, with new work arriving weekly. This is a shop to visit again and again! Everyone is welcome! Bring the children, dogs, cats, even bring the family rabbit!

Lincoln's CathedralMajestic & Castle

A GUIDE TO LINCOLNSHIRE’S MOST FAMOUS LANDMARKS

Lincoln Castle and the Cathedral are two of the most famous landmarks and visitor attractions in the UK and is visited by people from across the country as well as overseas tourists. Lincoln Castle is home to one of the four remaining copies of the Magna Carta and a Victorian prison.

Lincoln was a significant Roman town formally known as Lindum, which served as a fortress for the 9th Legion. Lincoln Castle, a home to kings and convicts, was built in 1068 by William the Conqueror. After William the Conqueror’s victory in the Battle of Hastings, he built many castles across the kingdom to ensure his control and status over the people.

Previously, Roman invaders had built a fortress on the hilltop where Lincoln Castle stands. The Normans constructed their motte and bailey castle using wooden palisade, reusing the remaining stone walls from the Roman fortress. In the late 11th century, the castle walls were rebuilt in stone.

During the late 12th Century, King

Henry II visited many times, and archaeologists found animal bones that are believed to have been from the countless banquets held in his honour. King John spent several days in September 1216, two weeks before he died of dysentery at Newark Castle. In 1541, King Henry VIII and Queen Catherine Howard visited the castle as part of his ‘royal progress’ to York.

The Magna Carta is the Great Charter of English political liberties granted by King John in 1215. It declared that the sovereign is to be subject to the rule of law and documented and protected the liberties held by the “free man.”

The great stone walk is one

of the most dramatic features of the castle. It provides breathtaking views of Lincoln and Lincoln Cathedral. Lincoln Castle’s Victorian prison was designed for an isolating regime to keep prisoners apart and prevent further corruption. It was believed that this would encourage reflection and reformation. Between 1848 and 1878, seven murderers were hung, and their bodies were buried in the Lucy Tower, which can still be seen today. This prison has been used as a filming location for Downton Abbey and Call the Midwife.

Another fantastic building to visit in the area is the Lincoln Cathedral. Works on Lincoln Cathedral began in 1072, it was consecrated in 1092. Between then and now it has been subject to fires, earthquakes, storms and civil wars that have all damaged areas of the Cathedral. Over time these damages were repaired or partially replaced.

The Exhibition Gallery is home to a range of artefacts from the history of the cathedral; each object tells a story. The centrepiece of the gallery is the Romanesque frieze, a panel that runs across the west front of the cathedral. It is estimated to have been carved between 1120-1160; it depicts scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The panels at the cathedral are the longest and most intact narrative frieze in Western Europe.

Inside Lincoln Cathedral is the petrified Lincoln Imp; Legend has it that two Imps headed to Lincoln to wreak havoc in the city’s cathedral. The Imps caused mayhem inside of the cathedral, smashing windows and destroying lights. In a final act of defiance, the Imps hid under a table and threw rocks at the Angel. In a moment of anger, the angel turned the imp to stone. The imp has remained in the same spot ever since as a reminder of how good will always triumph over evil.

Lincoln Castle and Cathedral brings in many tourists to the area from

around the country with its fantastic events they both hold events, Lincoln Castle is hosting six live music events throughout June, including; Crowded House (15th), Jess Glynne (16th), Paloma Faith (22nd), Kaiser Chiefs (28th) and Madness (29th). The Cathedral offers guided tours and tours of the 3,000 Graffiti marks left across the premiss. This boosts the local economy and supports local businesses.

BA GRAND SIXTEENTH-CENTURY ENGLISH COUNTRY HOUSE

Burghley House

Burghley House stands as a monumental example of the Elizabethan prodigy house, reflecting the power and wealth of its original owner, Sir William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley.

uilt between 1555 and 1587 near Stamford, Lincolnshire, this architectural masterpiece has captivated visitors with its opulent design and extensive collections of art and antiques for centuries. This article aims to journey through the history of Burghley House, from its inception to its current status as a vibrant venue for public events, weddings, private hire, educational trips, and corporate gatherings.

The Foundation and Construction (1555-1587)

Burghley House was conceived by Sir William Cecil, who was Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I. The construction began in 1555, embodying the power and prestige of Elizabethan England. Its design, primarily the work of the mason William Smythson, represents the apex of the Elizabethan prodigy house, a statement of wealth, ambition, and fashion of the time. The house was built with a symmetrical layout and adorned with ornate stonework, embodying the grandeur of the Renaissance.

For over 450 years, Burghley House has been the residence of the Cecil family, passing through generations, each leaving their mark on the estate. Last year, 58,000 people visited the Show, along with 2,500 animals and 500 traders or exhibitors, and it is one of the most anticipated events in the region.

CHARLOTTE POWELL, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF THE LINCOLNSHIRE AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY (LAS) SAID THAT SHE HAS BIG HOPES FOR THE SHOW:

“I am thrilled to see the return of our iconic Lincolnshire Show for its 139th Show. This year’s event promises to be bigger and better than ever before.

“We are proud to announce a major expansion of our popular Horticultural Zone with our must-see Garden Show, where some of the best nurseries will be competing for the best display.

“Furthermore, our Countryside area will feature some new additional entertainment, ensuring a memorable day out for everyone, and we may have some more surprises in store. I invite you all to join us at the Lincolnshire Show, where we will celebrate the best of our region’s agriculture, entertainment and community spirit.”

26 lincolnshireinfocus.co.uk LINCOLNSHIRE SHOW 2024

With Lincolnshire being home to more than 4,500 farms, covering 80% of the county, the Lincolnshire Show is one of the biggest county shows in the country, with its history stretching back 139 years.

Organised by the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society (LAS), a registered charity which aims to educate the local community about food, farming and the countryside, the Show remains true to its roots, with a strong focus on farming and country life. All funds raised through ticket sales are invested in the LAS’ charity works, including the LAS Education Programme, and are reinvested in producing the Show each year.

As well as the new Garden Show areas, the Show’s Main Ring promises stunt displays, livestock performances, the Shetland Grand National and much more, while the Lincolnshire Kitchen returns with live cookery demonstrations and opportunities to taste local produce. The Horticultural Zone, where the new Garden Show will be located, will also see floristry displays and the return of The Potting Shed which premiered at last year’s Show. Lincolnshire’s sky-high heritage will be celebrated during the event and children can try their hand at fun farming activities at the Farm-gate Education Marquee. Meanwhile, the Members’ Lawn is the place to be for a relaxing glass of Pimm’s in the sun.

The Show is also proud to host one of the qualifying rounds of Farmer’s Weekly’s ‘Britain’s Fittest Farmer’ competition, which champions fitness and mental wellbeing and agriculture with gruelling feats of physical strength and resilience.

Spread out over 200 acres at the Lincolnshire Showground, just four miles from Lincoln city centre, the Lincolnshire Show offers breathtaking entertainment, a huge range of exhibitors and retailers, a

vintage fairground, historical aircraft, expert cooking demonstrations, equine and livestock shows and much, much more.

In the months leading up the Show, farmers, livestock owners, florists, artists, chefs, craftspeople, entertainers, stunt performers, makers and retailers throughout the county will be busy preparing for the event, which is a highlight of the Lincolnshire calendar.

Local schools will also be getting ready for the LAS Schools’ Challenge to better teach children about agriculture, sustainability, food and nutrition with teachers working directly with the LAS’ education team.

A VINTAGE jet, of the type used by the original Red Arrows, has flown alongside the present-day team to help mark their 60th display season.

The Folland Gnat, which dates from 1964, joined the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team’s distinctive BAE Systems Hawks above the skies of Lincolnshire.

Pilots and engineers from yesteryear, as well as Air Cadets representing the future of the RAF, were also at RAF Waddington for the special diamond season celebration.

Coinciding with the rare mixed formation flight, new dates and locations were released earlier today listing where people can see the 2024 Red Arrows team display in the United Kingdom this summer. This list can be found in the Displays section of the Red Arrows website.

Squadron Leader Jon Bond, who will lead the team as Red 1 for the first time this year, said: “To bring together the past, present and potential future of the Red Arrows is the perfect way to launch our 60th season display calendar.

“The Red Arrows will perform a new, nine-aircraft show at locations across the UK this summer and the whole team of 140 people, both air and ground crew, are humbled by the countless individuals whom have already got in touch to say how they can’t wait to see this diamond display.

“I know, from my own childhood experience at airshows, just how many people – of all ages and backgrounds – these events bring together and how important they are to communities.

“Generations of families, up and down the country, have enjoyed watching the Red Arrows display ever since the first public show in 1965 and this 60th season will remain faithful to our aims – to entertain, inform and inspire.”

Training for the Red Arrows’ new season is continuing at RAF Waddington, with the first public appearance of the diamond campaign scheduled for late-May.

Dozens of dates, including coastal displays such as Blackpool Airshow and the opening day of the Eastbourne International Airshow, are on the 2024 calendar, alongside other big events including the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Armed Forces’ Day performances.

The season runs until early-October, with the Red Arrows also invited to Canada to perform at four airshows in late-summer to help celebrate the Royal Canadian Air Force’s centennial.

When in military service, the Folland Gnat – two of which came to RAF Waddington for the 60th launch event – was primarily used by the RAF as a training aircraft.

It was flown by the Red Arrows from the team’s first season in 1965 until being replaced by the bigger Hawk T1 in 1980.

Owned and operated by the Heritage Aircraft Trust, the jets visiting RAF Waddington were never actually part of the Red Arrows’ fleet.

However, one is painted in the bright livery associated with the Yellowjacks display team – one of the immediate predecessors of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team.

Accompanying the 1964-built yellow jet to Lincolnshire was another Gnat, a 1963-version painted in 4 Flying Training School colours.

Among those attending today’s event were former Red Arrows engineers and pilots from the Gnat era, including some who were part of the original 1965 team.

Leader and Red 1 for four consecutive seasons between 1966 and 1969 – still a record to this day – as well as being a wingman in the team’s founding year was Squadron Leader Ray Hanna.

His daughter, Sarah, also joined the Red Arrows for the special occasion at RAF Waddington.

Sarah said: “For me, it has always been a point of great pride that my father led the team through those formative, critical years and established the foundations for its longevity.”

Another of those at the event was Air Cadet Holly Rowley-White, who completed her first solo flight just five days after her 16th birthday in January this year.

Holly – a sergeant with 759 (Beccles) Squadron in Suffolk –said: “The opportunity to join the Red Arrows for this 60th milestone at RAF Waddington is like all my dreams and wishes have come true. I feel so privileged to be part of this special celebration and historical moment. When I found out I was attending I did not stop screaming for an hour!

“One of my first recollections of watching the Red Arrows was in Great Yarmouth in 2018 when I was 10-years-old and I thought –‘I could do that one day’. I aspire to be a fast-jet pilot in the RAF and a future Red Arrows pilot.

“It’s been amazing to meet the talented pilots and support staff, learn about the journey they have taken so far, what it takes to be the best and how proud they must feel to be part of the Red Arrows team for the 60th display season.

“Thank you to all of the Red Arrows team for giving me this opportunity – just wow!”.

Wing Commander Adam Collins, Officer Commanding of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, said: “The Gnat is synonymous with the earliest days of the Red Arrows and this wonderful chapter of British aviation.

“Reuniting the aircraft, at our home base in Lincolnshire, with some of those who helped establish the team during the 1960s, as well as aviators of the future such as Holly, has been a great backdrop from which to launch our Diamond Season display dates.

“It’s through these forthcoming summer shows, colourful flypasts and engaging ground events that we hope to inspire even more generations.”

Continue checking the Red Arrows’ online and social media channels for more information on events marking the Diamond Season in 2024.

EDUCATING LINCOLNSHIRE:

ENRICHING THE EXPERIENCE OF Military Children in Schools

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate in York is home to approximately 340 Forces students on a campus of around 1300 students.

As Principal, Dan Machin, states, “As military children represent a quarter of the student population onsite, it is incredibly important that our school offers enriching experiences and supportive services that help our campus to feel like a home away from home, one that truly benefits our Forces students as a whole.”

This is why, our school offers various initiatives and clubs to ensure the military students feel both part of the community and fully supported throughout their time here.

For our younger Forces students, we have our Forces Club, which is run by veteran, Danny Abdy, who draws on his experience of serving in the army for 25 years and in working with organisations including SSAFA, Barnardo’s, and the Army Cadet Force.

As he describes, “Our Forces Club is about being able to share the experiences of being connected to the military community and allowing the military children to have an identity and support network whilst having fun. Each week, our activities use the military values of courage, discipline, respect, integrity, loyalty and selfless commitment to support the development of transferable life skills. We always take time to ‘check in’ on how the children are doing before beginning the teambuilding challenges and always finish by ‘checking out’ and reflecting on how the gamesn went, as a way of empowering our members.”

From Year 8 onwards, all students can join our Combined Cadet Force, which provides enriching opportunities that develop leadership and team-building skills through challenging training activities including drills, parades, marksmanship, orienteering, command tasks, flying, fieldcraft, first aid, navigation and adventure training.

As former QE CCF Regiment Sergeant and Lord Lieutenant Cadet for North Yorkshire, Hannah, says, “Through the CCF programme, I gained new experiences which I would not have been able to participate in otherwise. I spent nights in the forest tucked into a sleeping bag whilst my closest friends were next to me, and owls were howling above, cooking my ration packs in the morning and trading an all-day breakfast for a bowl of muesli. I attended amazing events like the King’s Coronation concert and met Their Majesty’s King Charles and Camilla, Queen Consort. I also had the opportunity to enrol on a CVQO Diploma in Teamwork & Personal Development and was nominated for the CVQO Westminster Award. I would definitely encourage others to get involved with all the opportunities in CCF.”

Farming & Argiculture in Lincolnshire Sustaining the breadbasket of the UK

In the heart of England, the county of Lincolnshire unfolds as a vast canvas of verdant fields, rolling hills, and vibrant market towns, painting the perfect picture of Britain’s agricultural prowess.

Known affectionately as the “food basket of the UK,” Lincolnshire’s contribution to farming and agriculture extends far beyond its borders, feeding the nation and fueling a significant portion of its economy. As summer unfolds across this picturesque landscape, the importance of agriculture in Lincolnshire comes into sharper focus, highlighting a sector that is as much a part of the county’s heritage as it is a cornerstone of its future prosperity.

Lincolnshire’s agricultural heritage is steeped in centuries of farming innovation and rural tradition. The county’s fertile soil and favourable climate have made it an ideal location for a wide range of agricultural activities. From the expansive cereal crops waving under the summer sun to the vibrant patches of vegetables and flowers, the landscape is a testament to the hard work and dedication of its farming community. Agriculture is not just an industry in Lincolnshire; it is a way of life, passed down through generations, continually evolving to meet the challenges and opportunities of the present day.

Feeding the Nation

The significance of Lincolnshire in the national food supply chain cannot be overstated. The county’s farmers and food producers are among the most productive in Europe, thanks to a combination of rich agricultural land, innovative farming techniques, and a deep understanding of the crops they cultivate. Lincolnshire is particularly renowned for its horticultural produce, with vast quantities of vegetables, potatoes, and flowers being harvested each summer. These products not only fill the shelves of supermarkets across the UK but also are exported to provide a taste of Lincolnshire’s bounty worldwide.

Employment and Economic Contribution

The agricultural sector is a vital source of employment in Lincolnshire, supporting a significant number of jobs in farming, food production, and related industries. The summer months, in particular, see an uptick in

seasonal employment, as the harvest requires additional hands to ensure the timely and efficient gathering of crops. This influx of seasonal workers is a boon to the local economy, stimulating growth and prosperity in rural communities. Moreover, the sector’s contribution to the economy extends beyond the fields and farms, supporting a wide range of businesses and services throughout the county.

Investment and Innovation

The future of agriculture in Lincolnshire is bright, with continuous investment in technology, research, and development driving the sector forward. Farmers and producers are increasingly turning to innovative practices to enhance yield, reduce environmental impact, and meet the changing demands of consumers. This includes the diversification of crops, with Lincolnshire farmers exploring new varieties and techniques to expand their offerings and increase sustainability. The investment in horticulture has also been significant, positioning Lincolnshire as a leader in the production of flowers and plants alongside its traditional crops.

The Heart of Lincolnshire’s Economy

As Lincolnshire looks to the future, the importance of agriculture in shaping the economic and social landscape of the county remains undiminished. The sector is a key driver of growth, providing not only food and employment but also contributing to the environmental stewardship of the land. The summer farming season is a reminder of the resilience, innovation, and commitment of Lincolnshire’s agricultural community, ensuring that the county continues to thrive as the breadbasket of the UK.

Agriculture in Lincolnshire is a vibrant and vital sector, deeply rooted in the county’s heritage and essential to its future. As the summer sun nurtures the crops that stretch across this fertile landscape, it shines a light on the ongoing contribution of farming and agriculture to the prosperity and well-being of Lincolnshire and beyond.

BREAKOUT TREATMENT

FOR DRY EYE DISEASE ( DED)

One in five, and nearly 800 million people worldwide, suffer from DED. Over 50% of females over the age of 40, and over 90% of menopausal females, are thought to live with this condition. More recently, the condition has become more common in all ages and genders due to environmental factors, use of cosmetics and medications, excessive screen use, and underlying conditions such as blepharitis and Sjögren’s syndrome.

I have been a patient at O’Brien’s over twenty years. I have always been extremely happy with the high standard of care and service provided. As well as their excellent customer service and patient care they also have a very good choice of frames. I love the superior lenses in my new glasses. I am incredibly grateful for the excellent professional care when I go for my eye test with Dr Janjua - I know my prescription will be perfect. O’Brien’s has a great team who are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. You never feel rushed and they go out of their way to make sure you are happy.

This new therapy for Dry Eye Disease offered at O’Brien’s in Brigg is safe, noninvasive, painless - and doesn’t involve any eyedrops. It is known as Intense Pulsating Light (IPL) and Low Light Level Therapy (LLLT), though it may also be referred to as Photobiomodulation (PBM).

IPL uses thermal pulses to stimulate the Meibomian glands, and LLLT uses a specific wavelength of light to gently heat the eyelids. This revolutionary new treatment helps the Meibomian glands to work properly and therefore stabilises and improves the quantity and quality of the oily layer of the tear film. The treatment provides an immediate relief of symptoms.

The front part of your eyes is lubricated by a special moist film consisting of a mucous layer nearest your eyes, a middle, watery layer derived from your tear glands, and a third, outer layer, which is oily (lipid) and produced by special glands (the Meibomian glands) in your upper and lower eyelids.

Highlighting the fact that more than 100 people in the UK start to lose their sight each day, they are promoting the importance of the earliest possible diagnosis. With an ADVANCED Eye Examination being much more than a new pair of spectacles or contact lenses, the practice has invested in the most advanced diagnostic technology so early changes in the eye can be detected, long before there are any obvious symptoms: this allows for early treatment and better results. With the latest SPECTRALIS 4D high definition Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging technology, Dr. Janjua is now able to identify and monitor the smallest change. The HEIDELBERG SPECTRALIS 4D HD OCT ADVANCED Eye Examination is the same instrument that can be found at some of the best hospital eye departments including the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham and Manchester’s Royal Eye Hospital. It uses a patented eye-tracking system that allows Dr. Janjua to identify those at risk of eye disease more easily. The tracking system allows the 3D scan to be placed in exactly the same place (to one micron which is a 1/100th of a hair) at each visit, giving a true 4D view of change over time. This helps to reveal eye disease which may not yet be noticeable by the patient or detectable with a basic eye exam. Fast, painless and non-contact, the scan does not include any bright flashes of light or puffs of air, and takes place in seconds. “We are really excited to offer our patients this new 4D HD OCT advanced eye examination,” said Dr. Janjua “Using the SPECTRALIS technology, we can examine tiny details that help us detect eye disease at the earliest stages, reducing the risk of sight loss and improving our patient’s lives.” Common eye diseases can impair vision and cause permanent vision loss if not caught at an early stage. The best preventative measure to protect good vision is an annual ADVANCED EYE EXAMINATION, and treatment when needed. O’Brien’s Opticians are dedicated to providing patients with the highest quality ophthalmic lenses and now the most technologically advanced care. DRY EYE DISEASE AND SIGHT LOSS IS PREVENTABLE

Don’t put your precious eyesight at risk. Around 50% of sight loss is preventable, so if your eye examination is overdue, contact an optician and make an appointment today.

The NHS recommends that everyone should have their eyes tested every two years (or more frequently if you’ve previously been advised to do so).

In addition to identifying a need for vision correction or a prescription change, your optometrist will also be able to diagnose and treat more serious conditions including cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and Dry Eye Disease (DED). DED affects nearly 800 million people worldwide causing a variety of symptoms including itchy, sore, red, gritty eyes and blurry vision. Fortunately, new therapy is now available which provides immediate relief. This is safe and noninvasive, using painless thermal pulses – no eyedrops involved!

On a brighter note, it’s a great time to seek out new eyewear and important to protect your eyes from those UV rays. Check out the latest sunglasses or transitional/react-a-light glasses (which automatically react to changing light conditions).

There is now a huge range of fashionable frames fitted with fantastic lightweight lenses so choosing your glasses can be a real treat. Modern frames come in such an extensive choice of shapes and colours that there’s bound to be a pair out there to enhance your face and lift your spirits. LOVELL HOMES offers thousands in savings to Louth homebuyers

LOVELL HOMES is thrilled to announce the launch of exclusive savings offers for potential homebuyers eager to secure their dream home at Tennyson Fields, located in the quiet residential area of Louth.

Following the resounding success of the inaugural development phase, Lovell proudly presents the second phase of Tennyson Fields, showcasing a remarkable assortment of 2, 3, and 4-bedroom homes.

As part of their dedication to making homeownership more accessible, Lovell are pleased to introduce a range of compelling saving offers for qualified buyers looking to move to one of their developments.

Sarah Lancaster, Regional Sales Manager at Lovell, added: “New homebuyers can save thousands on our deals, such as 5% deposit boost, a mortgage contribution, flooring included, or upgrades to our Inspiration range of interiors. But there are also offers designed specifically to get you moving. Whether you’re a first time buyer or an existing homeowner, you can benefit from the Own New - Rate Reducer scheme with a 3% to 5% contribution from Lovell.”

This contribution goes directly to your mortgage lender through Own New, and you can look forward to reduced monthly mortgage payments for the first 2-5 years.

Among the saving schemes available are the 5% saver, Helping Hands, Assisted Move Scheme, and covered stamp duty. It’s prudent to seek independent mortgage advice before finalising any decisions.

Not only are there initial savings on the purchase of the property, but homeowners can also benefit from continued savings with their new energy-efficient home. ‘Watt a Save’, the latest report by The House Builder Federation, reveals that buyers of new homes save on average over £1,600 on household bills per property each year.

The average new build house emits 65% less carbon than older houses.

Buyers of new build homes in 2023 reduced carbon emissions by 500,000 tonnes. New homes built from June 2023 under Part L will emit 73% less carbon than older homes, saving over 2.5 tonnes per property each year.

Lovell’s new-build homes also use 30% less water, 80% less electricity for lighting, and energy-efficient insulation.

With your new Lovell home, you can spend up to £2,200* less on your energy bills each year and reduce your carbon footprint. (*Source: Watt a Save: New HBF report).

Whether embarking on the journey of homeownership for the first time, seeking to accommodate a growing family, or contemplating retirement bliss, Tennyson Fields offers an exquisite selection of 2, 3 & 4 bedroom homes meticulously designed with your lifestyle in mind.

SPreparing Your Home for Summer A

GUIDE TO SEASONAL REFRESH

As the warmer months approach, the anticipation of sunny days and balmy evenings stirs a desire for change within our homes.

ummer brings with it a burst of energy and vibrancy, making it the perfect time to refresh and revitalize our living spaces. From the textures underfoot to the furniture that invites relaxation, every element plays a role in crafting a summer-ready home. Here’s how you can accessorise your home for the season, creating a perfect haven for relaxation and entertainment.

Introduce Colorful Accents

Summer is synonymous with color, from the deep blues of the ocean to the bright yellows of the midday sun. Introduce this vibrancy into your home with colorful rugs that breathe life into any room. Scatter cushions in a variety of shades and patterns can transform a sofa or chair from a winter cocoon into a summer perch.

Don’t overlook the impact of lamps and footstools, which can serve as functional yet decorative pieces that add pops of color to corners and spaces in need of a little uplift.

Create Layers of Comfort and Style

While summer days can be warm, evenings often bring a cool breeze. Prepare for cozy nights with lightweight throws that can easily be draped over furniture. Footstools not only add an extra layer of comfort but also serve as an excellent way to introduce texture and color. Consider materials like linen or cotton for a soft, breathable touch that complements the season.

Opt for Lightweight and Natural Materials

Summer decor is all about embracing the lightness of the season. Rattan conservatory furniture embodies the spirit of summer with its natural, airy construction, making it an ideal choice for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Plant baskets crafted from wicker or seagrass can house your greenery, adding a touch of nature and freshness to any room.

Enhance Your Reading Nook

Summer is the perfect time to catch up on your reading list, and a well-styled bookcase can inspire you to reach for a book more often. Organize your summer reads on a spacious bookcase, and consider adding decorative elements like vases or picture frames to create a personalized touch. A comfortable chair with a view, perhaps by a window or in a quiet corner, can become your summer escape within your home.

Extend Comfort to Outdoor Spaces

As the lines between indoor and outdoor living blur during the summer months, extend your home’s comfort to the garden or patio. Summer houses and garden furniture not only enhance the functionality of your outdoor spaces but also create additional areas for relaxation and entertainment. Choose garden furniture that complements the style of your home, ensuring a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors. A well-placed summer house can serve as a retreat, a studio, or a space for alfresco dining.

About Cadwell Park

Fondly nicknamed the ‘mini-Nürburgring’, Cadwell Park motor racing circuit has a rich history and will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2024. Located 10 miles north of Horncastle and five miles south of Louth, the Lincolnshire circuit is especially popular with bikers nationwide.

Cadwell Park’s twisty and undulating nature, winding through open park and woodland, has seen it become established as one of the best racetracks in the UK. Once discovered, it’s often a firm favourite amongst those who visit, whether as a spectator or participant.

The circuit is also one of the most popular destinations on the Bennetts British Superbike Championship calendar. Fans descend on the venue in their thousands in August for the annual visit from the world’s leading domestic superbike category, making it one of Lincolnshire’s biggest sporting events of the year.

As the circuit’s reputation continues to build, there are an increasing number of club car events taking place at the circuit, including the popular Vintage Sports-Car Club Festival, along with vintage and classic motorcycle events and spectacular rallies.

The ‘Focus’ Guide to Electric bikes and E-Cycles

Electric bikes, or e-bikes, have surged in popularity across the UK, marking a revolution in how we think about personal transport.

Combining the physical health benefits of traditional cycling with the added assistance of an electric motor, e-bikes offer an accessible, eco-friendly alternative to motor vehicles for commuting, leisure, and everything in between. This guide will navigate the essentials of choosing the right e-bike, understanding the technology behind electric motors, and evaluating the green credentials of e-bikes.

Selecting the perfect e-bike involves considering several key factors:

Purpose: Determine whether your e-bike will be used for daily commutes, off-road adventures, cargo hauling, or leisurely rides. Your intended use will significantly influence the type of e-bike that best suits your needs.

Motor Type: E-bikes typically come with either hub motors or middrive motors. Hub motors are located in the front or rear wheel, offering a balanced ride ideal for casual or commuter cyclists. Middrive motors, positioned near the bike’s pedals, provide a more natural riding feel and better weight distribution, suitable for hilly terrains and off-road conditions.

Battery Life: Consider the range you plan to cover on a single charge. Battery life varies widely among models, with some e-bikes offering extended ranges suitable for long commutes or touring.

Budget: Prices for e-bikes can range from affordable entry-level models to high-end bikes with advanced features. Determine your budget while considering the long-term value and potential savings on transportation costs.

Recent years have seen significant advancements in e-bike technology, enhancing their performance, efficiency, and user-friendliness. Battery technology has improved, offering longer life spans and quicker charging times, allowing riders to travel greater distances on a single charge. Motor efficiency has also increased, providing smoother acceleration and more responsive power delivery. Additionally, the integration of smart technology in e-bikes, such as GPS tracking and performance monitoring through mobile apps, has improved the overall cycling experience.

Types of E-Bikes

E-bikes come in various forms, each designed to cater to specific needs and riding conditions:

Hybrids/Commuter E-Bikes: Ideal for everyday use, these bikes combine comfort and functionality, making them perfect for city commutes and leisurely rides.

Off-Road E-Bikes: Designed for adventure seekers, off-road e-bikes offer enhanced suspension and rugged tires for tackling challenging terrains and trails.

E-Cargo Bikes: Equipped with large cargo areas, these bikes are excellent for hauling groceries, goods, or even children, providing a practical solution for urban logistics.

Folding E-Bikes: Perfect for commuters with limited storage space or those needing to combine cycling with public transport, folding e-bikes offer the ultimate in convenience and portability.

Are E-Bikes Really Green?

E-bikes are often touted for their environmental benefits, but just how green are they? The answer lies in their efficiency and the source of their electricity. E-bikes emit zero direct emissions, making them significantly cleaner than petrol or diesel vehicles.

The environmental impact of charging an e-bike depends on the electricity’s source; in regions where renewable energy is prevalent, e-bikes are greener. Moreover, e-bikes can reduce traffic congestion and the need for large parking spaces, contributing to lower urban pollution levels.

E-bikes represent a promising shift towards more sustainable and health-conscious modes of transportation. As technology continues to evolve, the potential for e-bikes to replace car trips for commuting and errands increases, offering a pathway to reduced carbon emissions and healthier communities. Whether you’re a city commuter, an adventure enthusiast, or someone looking to reduce your carbon footprint, there’s an e-bike out there for you. With their green credentials and growing accessibility, e-bikes are poised to play a crucial role in the future of urban mobility.

Children and Young People in Lincolnshire

NEED YOU TO CARE.

Every 20 minutes in the UK, another child enters the care system. In Lincolnshire, we’ve seen a perfect storm –more children than ever coming into care and fewer people putting themselves forward to offer a nurturing home. This leaves vulnerable children and young people in a state of uncertainty, living in circumstances which often don’t meet their individual needs.

Children come into foster care for a variety of reasons and may need a short period of care or much longer-term fostering.

“Every child is different,” says Lucy Stevens, Head of Recruitment at Affinity Fostering. “We need a diverse pool of carers to ensure we can offer children the well-matched families they deserve. Children should be able to live with the right Foster Carers in the right location based on their individual needs. We can’t always offer them this without more Foster Carers in the local area.”

Foster Carers must have a spare room, be over the age of 21 and

have a secure tenancy in order to apply. Foster Carers should be warm, nurturing and open with a deep motivation to make a positive difference to the lives of children.

“We have a lovely community of Foster Carers in Lincolnshire who are making an enormous impact on the children and young people in your area,” adds Lucy. “If you’d like to be part of something meaningful in your local area, please get in touch.”

Anyone interested in fostering, can contact Affinity Fostering on 01205 632532 or email them at info@affinityfostering.co.uk
