Travel giant Booking.com recently released its survey of 19,000

travellers across 26 countries revealing travel trends for the year ahead.

We were delighted to see wellness travel at the forefront, with nearly double the amount of people over 2017 planning to take health and wellbeing trips in 2018. And while spa and detox are still top of many wish lists, plenty of travellers are planning trips on their own two feet, with walking and hiking ranking highest as a way to really connect with local landscapes. Over half of survey respondents also mindfully reported that going on holiday is an opportunity to reflect and make Kristina Smith, Editor better lifestyle choices - and we couldn’t agree more.

I am looking to plan a retreat-type vacation in late spring or summer 2018, something a bit “off the grid� or a little unusual. Are there any properties or destinations you would recommend? My desired budget, including airfare, is under $5,000.

Costa Rica is one of my favourite destinations for retreats, there are

so many great options. For those looking to go in the summer, July and August are considered "little summer" - it's a break in the green season and offers visitors better weather than in the late spring. The Nicoya Peninsula is less popular than many areas in Costa Rica, not because it's not as great, but it's harder to get to, which is why celebrities love it and it is becoming more popular all the time. It's also one of the best spots for wellness resorts in the country. The Pranamar Villas and Yoga Retreat is a newer addition to the area, just opening a few years ago, but offers guests beachfront access and a variety of wellness, bodywork and spa options. If you're looking for something more off the grid and less known than Costa Rica, Nicaragua has some fantastic options. One of my favorites is the Aqua Wellness [we should still have images from our Nicaragua feature - perhaps we use as the main intro photo?] resort. It sits in a lovely cove with beautiful beach, jungle and ocean views and the accommodations are luxury tree house style villas, suites, and studios.

The resort has a pure wellness in nature focus and offers treatments like organic cacao body polish and mombacho volcanic clay massage.

I have to say, nothing soothes the soul more

than taking an “off the grid” retreat type of vacation; so I’m super excited that’s on your radar for 2018! If this is your first, you are in for a treat.

I’m lucky to have experienced, as well as design, these types of travel experiences for many of my clients. Based on your budget and time of year, one destination stands out from the rest – Costa Rica! Costa Rica is about a 5- hour flight from the tri-state area. There are reasonably priced direct flights from JFK and EWR airports. Once you arrive, it feels like you’ve been transported to Jurassic Park. It’s a nature lovers’ paradise. The property that best describes what you are looking for is Rio Perdido (Lost River). It’s nestled on a 600-acre private reserve. The accommodations are private bungalows nestled in trees. On property for an additional fee, you have the option of zip lining, canyon adventure (with waterfalls), hiking, white water tubing. You may also see spider monkeys hanging around the trees. It’s truly one a kind type of experience that seems to fit what you are looking for.

My favourite retreat is Rancho La Puerta in

Tecate, Mexico. It's very easy to get to as you fly into San Diego and Rancho transports you 1 hour south to their property. The resort sits on 4,000 acres in the shadow of Mt. Kuchumaa providing wonderful hiking. There are 50+ activities per day to choose from and guest lecturers and entertainers each week to help you learn something new.

The food is healthy and incredibly delicious. Your stay is in beautiful casitas/villas decorated with Mexican art, handmade furniture and providing complete privacy. You can fill every minute with wonderful activities or simply rest in a hammock or lounge by the pools. In my opinion, it is the best value for the money.

f you’re feeling overwhelmed by a pile of bills, mounting debt, and competing priorities, know that it’s possible to cut through the financial clutter. Get your financial house in order and overall wellness will follow suit. How? Begin by recognizing the benefits of getting your finances on track. Taking care of your money now is a first step in the journey towards leading a more balanced, fulfilled and meaningful life. Your heart will beat slower, you’ll catch more z’s, you’ll be more productive at work and even more likely to make healthy choices.

How do you get to be financially organized?

5 sure-fire tips.

Manage your information – On average, people who have their financial house in order locate any document or digital file in less than 20 seconds. At the core of organization is systematization. It starts with your mailbox or your inbox. In either case, you need a logical way to deal with the financial flow.

Shift your perspective – Ask yourself, “have I ever complained about the costs of living today or how big my credit card bill is getting?”

Remember, for every dollar you spend you are getting something in return. To feel financially well, focus on the receiving and never spend more than you make.

Determine your destination – Take time to map out your financial journey. It’s a goal-setting exercise that will save you time and give you clarity. Determining your goals is one of the most critical steps to financial wellness. Everyone has different financial priorities and obligations whether it’s saving for the ultimate retreat or paying off a big debt. Figure them out and write them down. Harvard studies have proven goals are 10 times more likely to happen when they are written down.

Paper records - If you are dealing with paper records, set up a vertical desktop filer in your office or near the front door to receive financial documents. Set a regular processing time to manage paperwork (i.e. weekly or monthly) and stick to it. You will need a filing system to store documents. The system should include a filing cabinet using legal size hanging folders and alphabetical tabs. Freedom Filer is a great off the shelf system with ready-made colour coded file and tabs. If you set up your own system, use folder names that make sense to you. You’ll also need an archiving system for saving financial documents like taxes or certain investments.

Digital records – If you decide to take the paperless route, begin by arranging to have all your bills and statements arrive in your inbox. Next, arrange with your financial institution to have all your bills debited from your account or your credit card. Even better, set up automatic credit card payment so you’ll never have to pay interest again! When your bills arrive, check your account to ensure you have sufficient funds for your upcoming automatic payments. Save time running to the bank and use your mobile phone to deposit cheques (note there will be a temporary hold on the cheque). If you prefer to have both digital and paper records this would be a good time to ensure the two systems mirror each other.

Buy happiness – Stressed out? It’s no surprise working adults have more money and less time. They say money doesn’t buy happiness but can definitely buy time. Researchers surveyed over 6,000 adults in the United States, Denmark, Canada and the Netherlands and discovered that spending money on time-saving services is linked to greater life satisfaction. Ironically, few people seem to be heeding the advice despite having the cash flow to do so. The evidence is there so go ahead and pay for a cleaner, professional organizer, gardener, bookkeeper, grocery delivery or prepared healthy meals and shift your time to doing something you truly enjoy.

Concentrate on creating – Are you a spender? If you find yourself setting out on a shopping spree to feel good, escape “reality” or fill a void, start by noticing your trigger. Then consider turning your consuming drive into a creating drive.

It might be planning a trip, playing the guitar, baking a pie, planning a garden … whatever brings about your inner smile.

With personal care product labels freely calling out labels like “clean,” “non-toxic,” “natural,” and even “organic” how does one really know if the brand is authentic or just trying to catch the natural beauty wave? In cosmetics, unlike food, these terms are not regulated unless certification is secured. And, even then, certifications can be dicey, so it’s confusing for the consumer.

Today we are seeing a surge in brands trying to position their products as organic using words like “bio-organic” or applying insignias that look like organic certifications or green symbols designed to dupe us into thinking their product has achieved a highly regarded status. Even as regulations start to tighten up, there are still many companies that include the word “organic” or “natural” in their brand, product name or wander-mag.ca

on their packaging, but they are not certified and their products can often contain chemical ingredients that pose harm to your health. Sound disheartening? Don’t be discouraged, as there are plenty of authentic brands, both established and emerging on the scene, that are passionate and working hard to craft you a truly clean set of options. You just need the tools to uncover them.

In the United States, you have the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture).

This organic seal and certification is the gold standard in organic skincare and is a trusted logo to look for. In the European Union, you have ECOCERT which is the largest organic certification organization in the world (founded in France, with offices globally including Canada) and considered a more sophisticated approach to cosmetic certification. Both of these bodies are highly dependable, however, keep in mind that these certifications are not always attainable.

The process can be involved and expensive for small natural brands to secure. In many cases, the certification is not realistic as, depending on the brand’s formulations, many raw ingredients, especially rare ingredients, harvested in an organic nature, are not available in a certified organic format.

So how can the consumer clear through the greenwashing clutter to take their clean beauty regime to the next level? Start by looking for brands that proudly state their products are free from Parabens, Sulfates, Petrochemicals, Artificial Fragrances, Silicones and Synthetic Dyes. Brands who proudly share that their 19

ingredients are never grown using pesticides or extracted using chemical solvents and are organic wherever possible. Brands in this category almost always have adopted a Cruelty-Free philosophy as well. This all-encompassing approach has become the foundation for the green beauty industry and will put you in a territory of likely authentic players. Unfortunately, you still have some homework to do, because even with such a foundation in place, the brand could still be applying undesirable synthetic preservatives or other chemicals into the product’s formulation, which is a red flag and signifies that the brand just doesn’t get it. Specific ingredients to watch for here are Triclosan, Phenoxyethanol, and SLS/SLES. Triclosan A commonly used antimicrobial agent found in many soaps, face cleansers, toothpaste, and deodorants. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has identified triclosan in the urine of 75 percent people tested. Widespread use with few regulations has led to concerns regarding their effects on humans and the environment, such as endocrine disruption, bioaccumulation, and the emergence of bacteria resistant to antibodies. wander-mag.ca

Phenoxyethanol A synthetic ether alcohol and a petrochemical preservative. Often used as a preservative in cosmetic products and also as a stabilizer in perfumes and soaps. Studies have demonstrated that it can cause contact dermatitis, and damage reproductive, immune, and nervous systems. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) data sheets show chromosomal changes and genetic mutation effects in testing as well as testicular atrophy and interference with reproductivity in mice.

It has been banned for use in certified organic skin care products by COSMOS, ECOCERT, and the new EU organic certification standard.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)/ Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) Used in cosmetics as a detergent and also to make products bubble and foam, it is common in shampoos, shower gels, and facial cleansers. Depending on manufacturing processes, these may be contaminated with high amounts of ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified ethylene oxide as a known human carcinogen and 1,4-dioxane as a possible human carcinogen. Ethylene oxide can also harm the nervous system and the California Environmental Protection Agency has classified it as a possible developmental toxicant based on evidence that it may interfere with human development. 1,4-dioxane is also persistent, which means it doesn't easily degrade and can remain in the environment long after it is rinsed away. Even though SLS / SLES has had significant buzz as a no-no in “natural” products many brands are still including using these lathering agents.

NOURISHING BANANA CREAM Bananas are good for beauty, both inside and out. They contain a host of vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, vitamins A, C and E and potassium.

• 1/2 ripe banana (yellow all over with a few small brown freckles) • 3 tbsp milk 1. Slice banana. In a small bowl and using a fork, mash banana with milk to form a paste.

2. Using fingers, spread banana mixture over face and neck.

Let stand on skin for 3-4 minutes.

3. Rinse off banana mixture with lukewarm water. Gently pat face and neck dry with a towel.

TIRED LEG & FOOT BATH An infusion of gentle herbs boosts circulation and relieves discomfort on days when you’ve spent too long standing up.

• 4 cups water • 3 tbsp dried chamomile flowers • 3 tbsp fresh rosemary leaves

• 3 tbsp fresh mint leaves • 3 tbsp fresh orange leaves • warm water

1. In a large saucepan, combine water, chamomile flowers, rosemary leaves, mint leaves and orange leaves; bring just to a boil. Cover and let steep for 20 minutes.

2. Place fine-mesh sieve over another large heatproof bowl or basin. Strain infusion into bowl, discarding solids. Add more warm water to fill bowl to desired level.

3. Soak feet in infusion for 15 minutes. Gently pat feet dry with a towel.

The French are known for their passion for fine food, and for any devout foodie or fan of inspired local eating, Québec City will not disappoint.

Here, the slow food / real food movement is alive and well, and in fact, always has been, trendy or not.

Though famous for hearty Québécois fare like tourtiere (meat pie), poutine (french fries with gravy and cheese curds), baked beans and maple syrup, Québec City’s proximity to major agricultural areas means the opportunity to integrate fresh, local foods into its menus.

Le Graffiti on Cartier Street is another appetizing choice, recognized for its innovative approach in blending French and Italian cuisine, and for it’s wine cellar. A lovely spot for a romantic dinner or cozy lunch with friends.

A short drive east of the city lies Île d'Orléans, Take the menu at Chez Boulay-Bistro Boréal in a small, mostly rural island that is described as Upper Town. Inspired by Nordic cuisine and the both the birthplace of francophones in North wilderness of northern Canada, here you’ll find America and the Garden of Québec. It delightful options like confit goose and duck leg is famous for its produce, especially maple parmentier, potatoes, with mushrooms and fir syrup, strawberries, apples, and potatoes and tree essence, and birch syrup vinaigrette. On the subject of berries, at Cassis Monna & Filles the blackcurrant has been synonymous with passion for 20 years. Created by fourth-generation liquoriste Bernard Monna, it is now an award-winning ecomuseum lovingly operated by his daughters Anne and Catherine. They cultivate 16 hectares of land, producing over 40,000 bottles of liquors per year, and using absolutely every part of the plant in production (even the leaves are reimagined as a healing tonic). n the heart of a bustling city, I enter a modern and bright studio space in search of some muchneeded downtime. Tucked inside YYoga’s Downtown Flow studio in Vancouver, I find my way to the Vida Spa reception where I am warmly welcomed, and invited to relax in the YYoga infrared sauna before my treatment (though the spa is inside the yoga studio, they are run independently).

Travel in this transitional time can feel ungrounding, as our bodies and minds crave more solitude, peace, and rest as we prepare for winter. Taking your healthy practices on the road and being mindful of how you’re spending your energy is especially important now, and will help create balance in all areas of your life, inviting in peace and clarity. Meditation, gentle yoga, and walking can all help support us in turning inward. Another self-care practice that is quickly gaining popularity in its ability to balance energy, decrease stress and improve the capacity of your body restore itself is floating.

Floatation therapy, or ‘floating’ as it’s referred to colloquially, is a type of sensory deprivation can be done either in sensory deprivation tanks or in open pools of water. In both cases, large amounts (think pounds and pounds- to about a 35% concentration) of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) are added to the water to allow the body to float weightlessly. The salty mixture is warmed to body temperature and the experience is completed—if you’re in a sensory deprivation tank—by shutting the lid and resting in darkness.

The experience is quite unique and is intended to reduce sensory input as much as possible to let the parasympathetic nervous system kick in - the part of the autonomous nervous system that is responsible for our ‘rest and digest’ functions. With less gravitational pull on our wander-mag.ca

ascend the steps to the gleaming glass and steel lobby and open the door, and the first thing that strikes me is the sound. Silence.

Staff at the front desk greet guests in low voices.

And no one is chattering away on their mobile phone. Probably because, as I soon learn, you are encouraged to leave them at reception to fully experience the benefits of disconnection.

I am in heaven.

In contrast to boisterous streets just outside in Vieux-Québec, the oldest part of Québec City, the inside of what was once a cloistered monastery feels contemplative and respectful. It is an almost unimaginable blending of old and new, and it works, beautifully.

I quickly discover that the story of Le Monastère des Augustines is as remarkable as the place itself.

In 1639, three sisters from the Augustinian order were sent by King Louis XIII to “New France” to establish North America's first hospital north of Mexico. "Neither hunger, nor cold, nor isolation would prevent them from establishing a haven here to heal the bodies of an entire people" reads the mission statement etched in the lobby’s glass.

20 years ago, confronted with declining numbers, the aging Sisters chose to pass on their heritage of healing by giving the monastery to the public in the form of a trust. Financial contributions by three levels of government made the transformation to a sustainable wellness retreat possible. The Sisters also made a substantial financial contribution, along with donating the building, more than 40,000 fascinating artifacts (housed in the on-site museum), and one of the most well-preserved written archives in North America.

Le Monastère is actually a non-profit organization designed to financially uphold its social mission and the legacy of these pioneering women - to give support and respite to those who care for others. Explains Marie-Eve Perron, Manager of Tourism Development at the monastery (whose passion and dedication are obvious and contagious), “All profits are reinvested in building a healthier society.”

After admiring the creaking wooden staircase dating back to 1757, I peek into one of the quaint “authentic rooms” (one of 33 on the floor, 28 being singles for solo wellness seekers) inspired by the nuns’ original cells, right down to the low doorways, replica beds, handmade quilts, and shared bathroom down the hall. A simple presence, much like the nuns themselves, the last of whom still reside in an adjoining wing.

It is a National Historic site and has won many architectural awards for blending modern, airy, glass and white walls with centuries-old wooden beams and floors, rough stone and religious artifacts. The property has been awarded 5 Green Keys, the highest level in Canada recognizing hotels that strive toward living green and reducing their carbon footprint through sustainable solutions.

My room, on the “contemporary” fourth floor, is also designed with peace and contemplation in mind (no televisions or telephones) but with modern desks, sliding wardrobe doors and ensuite bathrooms. The bedding and towels are made of comfortable, natural fibres and I fall in love with the soft-as-butter bathrobe.

Quiet corridors lined with photographs and artifacts lead to rooms where yoga, meditation, creativity, and wellness classes occur as part of the daily program, that also includes guided walks, qi gong, and discussions promoting balance and inner peace. Workshops and conferences on different topics, ranging from indoor gardening to healing, take place all year long as well. Combining modern-day holistic healing with age-old traditions that span religions, cultures, and beliefs is just another example of the wonderful magic that exists here.

to the Sisters (with an average age of 84) sing the vespers in the adjoining church. They thank us for praying with them, and I am only sorry that my French is too lacking to respond properly.

I peruse the list and decide to join the Awakening Series my first morning. Gentle stretching that includes breathing movement and meditation both wake me up and ground my spirit. As I rise from my mat for a posture, I spot three of the sisters walking slowly in the front garden just outside the window, a surprise I find both spiritual and surprisingly touching.

That same emotion comes over me when I listen

The onsite restaurant specializes in whole-food ingredients and plenty of local and organic produce, always with vegan and vegetarian choices. Like everything here, there are options, and nothing is dogmatic.

I join a Relaxation Series session before dinner for therapeutic yoga in the deep stone vault, an intense experience. During postures, the teacher advises we deepen into gratitude for being here, for our life paths, for being in the energy of 400 years of women dedicated to healing. It’s impossible to not just FEEL here.

An intense use of herbs and oils make salt and pepper unnecessary, and no sugar is used in cooking. They offer a selection of organic, biodynamic and local wines and beers at dinnertime with a menu built around the regional harvest.

"It is a tool we like to give our guests," she says.

"We propose practices and experiences and people can decide if it works for their life."

In fact, the menu is so dictated by what the local producers have that even clients hosting events here don’t know until about two weeks out what will be served.

Breakfast features a buffet of breads, nuts, honey, and fruits plus proteins and main dishes like omelettes, smoothie bowls or waffles. It is also taken in silence.

Like giving up your mobile device (the front desk will relay phone messages and provides alarm clocks), Perron says that guests are most apprehensive about the silent breakfast.

Perron explains that the Sisters’ vision of a best life is one being a combination of moments of action and moments of contemplation, so they take all meals in silence. (Similarly, she noted that after much debate prior to opening, it was decided that complimentary Wi-Fi would be available throughout Le Monastère. But, they request that device use is limited in public areas).

I quite enjoyed the silent breakfasts, feeling much more connected to my body as well as gratitude for the food. Rather than rushing through the experience, I took time to really savour it and tried to bring that practice home with me (though I admit, it’s usually limited to my morning coffee).

In addition to the daily programs and holistic treatments like massage, Signature programs deliver lectures and workshops with experts, either with accommodations or as part of a package.

This commitment to heritage, where decisions are still made in concert with the Sisters’ values of compassion and respect, combined with the commitment to sustainability is commendable and inspiring.

I thoroughly enjoyed a session with wellness specialist Krystine St-Laurent, founder of an Ayurvedic line of herbal oils on medicinal herbs, self-massage and aromatherapy. To illustrate for us that what goes on the skin, goes in the skin, Krystine noted that if you put your feet in a bath of garlic water, after 20 minutes your breath will smell like garlic. I was convinced.

In 2016, Le Monastère was named the world’s number one travel experience for a physical and mental reboot by National Geographic Traveler Magazine.

She reviewed many of the virtues of the medicinal herbs used by the Augustinian Sisters and the ways they are beneficial for body and spirit, and we tasted apothecary herbal teas inspired by the Sisters’ own recipes. One such recipe led to the development of Le Monastère’s signature “1639” essential oil, a blend of cedar, cardamom, and citrus that was used to help patients breathe (as well as cover up hospital smells). wander-mag.ca

On my last morning, I treated myself to a onehour deep tissue massage which enhanced my already blissed-out state. I absolutely felt I was radiating love and energy.
