The long winter is ending and, soon, we will embark on a fun-filled spring and summer. This brochure outlines the many programs available to youth and adults of all ages, interests, and abilities in Waverly and surrounding communities. While we hope that most of these programs can remain outdoors, it is great to have an indoor backup. Instead of canceling programs due to rain or heat index, we simply move them indoors, as we did last year when The W accommodated tennis, soccer, minor league baseball, and Tee Ball on bad-weather days. Although many youth in our community are involved in AAU and similar programs, we believe it is important to offer activities at the recreational level, allowing children of all abilities and income levels to participate in fun, safe, and educational programs. We invite you to check out all of the programs open to youth and adults. Financial assistance is available to ensure that all Waverly residents can benefit from these opportunities. Some users have experienced difficulties with online registration on our Web site, and we are working with the company to make this program as user-friendly as possible. Permission for Medical Treatment Upon registering for any Community Recreation program or activity, it is assumed that in the case of a parent’s or guardian’s absence or unavailability, The W staff is authorized to arrange for whatever medical treatment is considered necessary for the minor child enrolled in the activity. If a parent/guardian does not wish to authorize The W staff to arrange for medical treatment, a revocation of permission form must be filed with The W.

 Registration Information Pre-registration is required for all programs with the fees due and payable at the time of registration. No registration is complete until the fee has been paid and your name is added to the registration list. All registrations are accepted on a first-come basis. If a class was filled before your registration was processed, you may be placed on a waiting list. Always use correct age/grade at the beginning of the program.

Please fill out the entire form and be sure all information is correct and the program numbers are included. Online registration also will be available at www.The-W.org. Please keep a copy of your registration. The W will not call to confirm your registration.

 Enclose Payment P rogram Number/Letter System for Public Swim Lessons Only All public swim lessons have a program number for each class offered. The number system is being used to help simplify the registration procedure for both you and our office. Please indicate the program numbers when registering for programs.

Total all fees and make checks payable to The W. Do not send cash. All fees must be paid in full. Registrations with incorrect fees will be notified and held from processing until the correct fee has been received.

 Refunds In order to keep things fair to all participants, each withdrawal from a program will be assessed a $5 processing fee whether a refund check is issued or credit is put on account. There will be no transfers. Any changes will be treated as a refund and participants must re-register for the desired class. No refunds will be given following the registration deadline. Each program’s deadline is indicated by the through date. If a deadline date is not indicated, it will be seven calendar days prior to the program start date. If a medical problem arises during the activity/class, a physician’s written excuse must be presented stating that participation is restricted. In the case of a medical excuse, a percentage of whatever class time remains will be refunded. If the program/activity is canceled by the department, you will have the choice of having a full refund issued to your account or a refund check being issued to the person that paid for the enrollment.

Everyone Belongs! If you or a family member have special needs and would like to participate in a program, we will be happy to make accommodations to meet your needs. Please contact our office at 352-8726 if you would like more information regarding programs and/or accommodations for program participants according to the Americans with Disabilities Act. The W is a participating member in the “Together We Play” program.

REDUCED PROGRAM FEES Reduced price programs are available. Families or members of families are eligible for reduced price programs if they are currently receiving food stamps. Youth are eligible for reduced price programs if they received reduced price or free hot lunches. A form is available at The W Office. Verification will take approximately one week and must be completed before you can register for any programs at the discounted price. A new form must be filled out each year. Forms expire on Aug. 15 of each year.

 Green Bridge Disk Golf Course Brookwood Park, 6th Ave. SE, east of the green bridge Nine holes along the river and through the trees, two tees per basket.

 Waverly Trails Rail Trail Seven miles of hard-surface trail starting at 1st Street NW next to Nestle, across the Cedar River Bridge, through town to the Trail Head Shelter behind Kwik Star East, and continuing through forests, prairies, fields, and six bridges to Highway 63. Users can proceed south to Denver on the Denver trail. The six-mile stretch to Readlyn should be completed in late 2010.

Inter-trail System Hard-surface trail starting at 1st Street NW next to Nestle, proceeding south on the Kohlmann Park Riverwalk, across Bremer Avenue by the fire station and through South Riverside Park, east through Crestwood Park, around South East School, and finishing in a loop in Brookwood Park. Length is approximately 1.8 miles, including the loop.

 Waverly City Parks Shelter Reservations Shelter reservation forms are available online or at the Leisure Services Office. Shelter reservations are not complete until the fee is paid and the reservation is recorded. Kitchen/storage areas are NOT available for rent. Fees are $30 for four hours. Kohlmann Park Shelters are first come, first serve and not available for reservation. Kegs of beer are permitted in the parks if a keg permit is applied for and granted. Fee for a keg permit is $30 plus rental of a shelter.

Swimming Pool Open Policy The swimming pool will be open under the following conditions: Water and air temperature above 70° and at least 15 patrons for 20 minutes. Pool closure information will be broadcast on KWAY FM 99.3, on cable channel 10 or by calling the cancellation line (596-0188). Every attempt will be made to reopen the pool at 5 p.m. if the pool has been closed during the afternoon due to weather.

Wading Pool Policy We welcome everybody to play in our wading pool as long as they are children under age 7 and accompanied by a parent or sitter over the age of 14. Parents or sitters can wear street clothes in the wading pool without paying an admission fee. Anybody in a swimming suit will pay an admission fee. Swim diaper or tight fitting rubber pants are required for those not toilet trained.

Season Pass Policy Pass holders will be checked daily. Only immediate family members may be on a Family Pass. Sitters or guests will pay the daily rate or may take advantage of the discount punch card.

Plain Clothes Policy Parents are welcome in plain clothes to supervise children in the wading pool. Plain clothes and street shoes are not allowed on the main pool deck.

State Health Department Recommendation

We are now required to have procedures in the event of a fecal accident. As a result, any “accident” will require us to be closed for a minimum of two hours. Swim diapers or tight fitting rubber pants are now required for those children not toilet trained. Needless to say, showers will be enforced and patrons can safeguard themselves by not drinking the pool water. Swim diapers will be available for purchase at the pool.

 Lifeguard Training The American Red Cross program provides lifeguards with skills to keep patrons of aquatic facilities safe in and around water. This class includes training in First Aid and CPR/ AED for the Professional Rescuer. Participants must be at least 15 years of age before the end of the course to enroll. Certification is valid for three years.

 Lifeguard Training Recertification This certification is for individuals who have an existing lifeguarding certification and wish to renew. It reviews all lifeguard training components, including in- and out-of-water exercises.  Community CPR/First Aid The American Red Cross Community CPR Class teaches the skills necessary to prevent, recognize, and provide basic care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children, and infants until advanced medical personnel arrive. Certification is valid for one year. The American Red Cross First Aid course gives individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic First Aid care for injuries and sudden illness until advanced medical personnel arrive. Certification is valid for three years.

 Water Safety Instructor (WSI): The WSI class is a class that provides knowledge and skills necessary to teach swimming lessons and other water safety classes through understanding how to use course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate participant progress. Students must attend all classes to receive certification. Must be at least 16 years of age before the end of the course.

L earn-to-Swim Program at The W Schuldt Natatorium Swim lessons include all levels of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. Lessons are taught by American Red Cross certified water safety instructors. Learn-to-Swim teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to teach people of all ages to swim and to be safe in, on, and around the water and give students a positive learning experience.

Parent/Child This class is designed to provide experiences and activities for children aged 6 months-1½ years and their parent/guardian(s). Skills covered include asking for permission before entering water, enter and exiting the water in a safe manner, feeling comfortable in the water, explore submerging to the mouth, nose, eyes, and completely under water, exploring buoyancy on the front and back positions, changing body position in the water, experience wearing a lifejacket. Swim diapers are required for this course.

Parent/Toddler This class is designed to help children 1½-3 years and their parent/guardian(s). Parent/Toddler classes are designed to establish expectations for adult supervision, learn more ways to enter and exit the water in a safe manner, explore submerging in a rhythmic pattern, glide on the front and back with assistance, perform combined stroke on front and back with assistance, change body position in water, experience wearing a lifejacket.

Preschool Level 1 This class orients children 3 years old without a parent/guardian(s), to the aquatic environment and helps them gain basic aquatic skills. Skills learned in this class are entering water by using ladder, steps or side, front and back glides and recovery position, combined arm and leg actions, underwater exploration, and using lifejackets. Recommended ages: 3 and 4 year olds.

Preschool Level 2 This class helps children 4 years old gain greater independence in their skills and develop more comfort in and around water. Skills learned in this class are entering water by stepping in, bobbing, retrieving submerged objects, front and back glides, combined arm and leg actions on front and back, tread water using arm and leg actions, and using life jackets. Recommended ages: 3½ and 4½ year olds.

Preschool Level 3 This class helps children 5 years old start to gain basic swimming propulsive skills to be comfortable in and around water. Skills learned in this class are entering water by jumping in, fully submerged and hold breath under water, front jellyfish and tuck floats, change of direction while swimming on front and back, combined arm and leg actions on front and back, tread water using arm and leg actions, and using life jackets. Recommended ages: 4 and 5 year olds.

Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills This class is focused on water orientation and helping participants feel comfortable in the water.

Learn to Swim Program Skills learned include blowing bubbles through mouth and nose, bobbing, opening eyes under water and retrieving objects, front and back glides and floats, rolling from front to back, alternating and simultaneous arm and leg action on front and back. Minimum age - 6 years.

Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills This class gives participants success with fundamental skills. Skills learned include fully submerging and holding breath, bobbing, front, jellyfish and tuck floats, front and back glides and floats, change of direction while swimming, combined arm and leg actions on front and back, finning-arm action.

Skills taught include shallow-angle dives from the side, then glide and begin a front stroke, tuck and pike surface dives, submerging completely, front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming, sculling, open turns.

Level 6 Swimming and Skill Proficiency This class covers skill proficiency so students swim with ease, become more efficient, and learn to incorporate power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with four elements (Personal Water Safety, Lifeguard Readiness, Fitness Swimming, and some Diving fundamentals), preparing students to participate in more advanced

If you want the best from your workout, this is the class to be in! Let us take you through a moderate to high intensity workout, so you can have it all!

*Stretch & Flex Stretch & Flex is for the individual who desires to increase their flexibility. This 30-minute workout will incorporate various stretches to make you feel longer and leaner. Stretching is a great way to relieve stress, make daily tasks easier, and enhances what we gain from participating in an exercise program. Power Yoga This yoga class is designed for the individual who wants more than stretching and relaxation from their yoga class. Power yoga incorporates power moves to help increase strength and stamina with all the benefits of increasing strength and stress reduction through relaxation.

To register for any Outdoor Explorers events, please call the Bremer County Conservation Office in Tripoli at 319-882-4742.  Outdoor Explorers I Ensure your child is active and outside this summer by signing them up to enjoy and learn about the great outdoors! Explorers I is for first time participants. Outdoor activities include: get acquainted games, fishing/scavenger hunt, milk jug bird feeders, crayon stained “glass” leaves, geode smashing, wreathmaking, clay pinch pots, and leaf pounding. Bremer County Naturalists will teach/lead all sessions. Dates: July 6-29 Days: T/Th Age: 8-10 Time: 9:30-10:30 a.m. Place: South Riverside Shelter Fee: $20 Enrollment: 20

This session is for those who have completed previous years in Outdoor Explorers or are 11-13 years old. It is a longer session to provide more handson opportunities. We will use a Dutch Oven to bake a wild raspberry cake with raspberries we collect from Cedar Bend Park. We will go canoeing at Plainfield Lake and on the Shell Rock River. Activities will also include geocaching in Waverly, archery, how to shoot a pellet gun, trapshooting skills, testing water quality at a local stream, visiting a bird blind and prairie. Another trip will be to the Hawkeye Buffalo Ranch near Fredericksburg. Bremer County Naturalists will lead all sessions and transport participants. All sessions start and end at South Riverside Park.  Outdoor Explorers Field Trips These programs offer several day-long opportunities to explore our world. All gear will be provided but participants must bring their OWN LUNCH and drinks, especially water. The Bremer County Naturalist(s) will be present during all trips. All participants must meet at the Waverly Civic Center parking lot. Any child may participate even if they haven’t been in Outdoor Explorers before. Trip to Heery Woods in Butler County Participants will get involved with numerous team challenges at Heery Woods. Then we will also go fishing and canoeing. Dates: June 29 Age: 9 and older Time: 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Fee: $10

 Outdoor Explorers II Participants will step up to the next level of excitement for the outside world in Outdoor Explorers II. Session topics include get acquainted games, setting up a campsite, outdoor cooking, fishing, using a compass, constellation cans, beginning canoeing, and making clay animal magnets. Travel to the Bluedorn Science Imaginarium Visit the place “where science comes alive.” Participants will see how science affects our lives with hands-on demonstrations and activities. Be amazed by lightning, build your own robot, learn about how a hot air balloon rises and more. Dates: Friday, July 23 Age: 9 and older Time: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Fee: $10 Kayaking the Wapsipinicon River Experience the Wapsipinicon in Bremer County while in a kayak. Never been kayaking? No problem. CrawDaddy Outdoors will provide all the necessary equipment and training. Bring your own lunch and water bottle. Old shoes and clothes are recommended as well as hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Participants may bring their own life jackets if they prefer. Otherwise, one will be provided.  Hershey Youth Track and Field Meet Fun and exciting youth track meet for girls and boys ages 9-14 that emphasizes participation and is specifically geared toward the novice or beginner in track and field. The No. 1 killer in the United States is cardiovascular disease, according to the American Heart Association. There are 61.8 million Americans recovering from a stroke or heart failure, or suffering from high blood pressure, heart defects, hardening of the arteries, and other diseases of the circulatory system. Depending on what stage of disease you have or when you’re finished with cardiac rehab, Heart Happy can assist you with the bridge from the clinical setting to your mainstream workouts. Researchers say strength workouts give patients the stamina they need to move through their daily routines, and it has been shown to reduce demands on the heart when carrying on day-to-day activities.  Survivor Care Almost 1.3 million Americans are expected to be diagnosed this year with cancer, the nation’s second-leading killer, according to the American Cancer Society. This program will provide exercise for cancer patients with minimal amount of strength conditioning, combined with flexibility training and aerobic exercise. Depending on the time frame of chemotherapy or radiation, the program will have daily walks, the use of fitness balls and dumbbells with resistance from rubber tubing.  Inclusion Connection: Bridging Friendships Bridging Friendships is a newly formed group in Waverly, dedicated to bridging friendships between young adults with disabilities, ages 17-25, and their peers. We are looking for volunteers that are interested in making some cool new friends. Everyone needs meaningful relationships. Everyone also needs social and leisure activities in their life. This is a great way to experience how much young people with special needs can contribute to a relationship and what great friends they can be. Please think about getting involved. Upon registering for any Community Recreation program or activity, it is assumed that in the case of a parent’s or guardian’s absence or unavailability, The W staff is authorized to arrange for whatever medical treatment is considered necessary for the minor child enrolled in the activity.

In order to keep things fair to all participants, each withdrawal from a program will be assessed a $5 processing fee whether a refund check is issued or credit is put on account. There will be no transfers. Any changes will be treated as a refund and participants must re-register for the desired class.

If parent/guardian does not wish to authorize The W staff to arrange for medical treatment, a revocation of permission form must be filed with The W.

No refunds will be given following the registration deadline. If a medical problem arises during the activity/class, a physician’s written excuse must be presented stating that participation is restricted. In the case of a medical excuse, a percentage of whatever class time remains will be refunded.
