“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit… The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat… and a child shall lead them.” — Isaiah 11 This Isaiah passage served as the inspiration for this 2012 Christmas with Wartburg mural. The Christ child is depicted within the blooming rose as the shoot growing out of the stump of Jesse, which becomes the Tree of Life. The animals are focused on the birth of Christ, and all is at peace. The mural juxtaposes the beauty of the flowers against the thorny gardens. Christ is the winter rose with thorny roots symbolizing the crown of thorns from the crucifixion. Flanking the colorful and peaceful garden centerpiece are two less colorful gardens – the Garden of Eden and the Garden of Gethsemane. The Garden of Eden symbolizes humankind’s fall from grace and the world that now needs God’s compassion and forgiveness. The Garden of Gethsemane represents the end of Christ’s life and the ultimate sacrifice, so the world might know the unconditional love of God. The center portrait, shaped like the Luther Rose, symbolizes the theology of Martin Luther. Typically, the Luther Rose features a black cross surrounded by a red heart and a white rose. In the mural, the Christ child replaces the cross and heart and the rose is red to symbolize his redeeming love for the world. Directly above the rose centerpiece is the ghostly image of the crown of thorns. The depiction of Mary with Gabriel also has a double meaning. A basket of bread and roses at Mary’s feet symbolizes the “miracle of the roses” and St. Elizabeth. According to the legend, Elizabeth smuggled bread and leftovers from the Wartburg Castle kitchen to share with the poor. The practice was forbidden, so she hid the food in her robes. Suspicious courtiers on one of these trips demanded she open her robes. When she did so, the hidden bread had turned to roses. She was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church after her death in 1231.

Narration In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God. And the Word was God. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And the spirit of God moved over the face of the waters. Then God created all that dwelled within the firmament and the dry land. When he saw his creation God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” So God caused a mist to go up from the earth, and formed man out of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. Then God created woman from the rib of man; and they lived together in the garden the Lord God created called Eden. In the midst of the garden were the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil which the Lord commanded the man and the woman never to eat. But they tasted the forbidden fruit, and sinned against God. So God cast them out of the garden to work the ground from which they were taken, fallen from grace. And so the generations of man and woman were born into sin. Generations have cried, “Out of the depths we call to you, O Lord! Forgive our iniquities and hear our voices!”

Lo, how a rose e’er blooming, And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him. from tender stem hath sprung. The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. Of Jesse’s lineage coming, And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. As men of old have sung. Amid the cold of winter, God sent from heaven’s garden a rose to show his enduring love.

Narration All of creation sings your praises, O God, for amid a cold winter’s night, a spotless rose blooms. Its beauty unfolds one petal at a time, bringing salvation to all, so that your holy garden might be restored.

A spotless rose is blowing, sprung from a tender root, of ancient seers’ foreshowing, of Jesse’s promised fruit; its fairest bud unfolds to light amid the cold, cold winter, and in the dark midnight. The rose which I am singing, whereof Isaiah said, is from its sweet root springing in Mary purest Maid; for through our God’s great love and might, the Blessed Babe she bare us in a cold, cold winter’s night. Narration The angel Gabriel was sent from God to Nazareth, to a virgin whose name was Mary. And he said, “Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you! You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my savior.”

Narration The angels paused to wonder upon that holy sight, and kings and shepherds gathered to worship him that night. They all breathed in its beauty, a precious, sweet perfume, and in the bleak midwinter, the rose began to bloom.

Narration In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. So Joseph went to be enrolled with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Narration Lily of lilies, he upon his mother’s knee; rose of roses, soon to be crowned with thorns on leafless tree.

All pathways by his feet are worn, his strong heart stirs the everlasting sea, his crown of thorns is twined with every thorn, his cross is every tree. Isaiah ‘twas foretold it the Rose I have in mind. with Mary we behold it the virgin mother kind. O sacred head now wounded with grief and shame weighed down; amid the cold of winter when half spent was the night. I see his blood upon the rose, his cross is every tree.

Elizabeth Poston The Tree of Life my soul has seen, laden with fruit and always green. The trees of nature fruitless be compared with Christ the appletree. He took Peter, James, and John with him to pray and as they walked into the garden, Jesus became deeply distressed and said, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow, to the point of death.” Going a little farther, Jesus fell to the ground and prayed, “Abba, everything is possible for you. Even though I currently live so far away from home, each person in the Wartburg Choir has treated me like family. At the end of each concert, we sing Give Me Jesus. When we held hands and sang

Iowa Public Television (IPTV) will air a one-hour program of highlights from Christmas with Wartburg 2011 on IPTV.1 at 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, and 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24. The IPTV taping and production of a commemorative DVD/CD set were made possible by a generous donation from the Sukup Family Foundation and Eugene and Mary Sukup of Sheffield to celebrate the joy of the Savior’s birth and the impact of Christian education.

About Wartburg College Wartburg College, named after the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, Germany, traces its roots to 1852, when pastor Wilhelm Löhe of Neuendettelsau, Bavaria, sent Georg Grossmann and five students to found a teacher-training school for German immigrants in Saginaw, Mich. The college moved several times before establishing a permanent home in Waverly in 1935. A liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Wartburg is dedicated to challenging and nurturing students for lives of leadership and service as a spirited expression of their faith and learning. The college enrolls 1,747 students, who come from 29 U.S. states and 53 countries. Wartburg awards Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Music Education degrees.
