“A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit… The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat… and a child shall lead them.” — Isaiah 11 This Isaiah passage served as the inspiration for this 2012 Christmas with Wartburg mural. The Christ child is depicted within the blooming rose as the shoot growing out of the stump of Jesse, which becomes the Tree of Life. The animals are focused on the birth of Christ, and all is at peace. The mural juxtaposes the beauty of the flowers against the thorny gardens. Christ is the winter rose with thorny roots symbolizing the crown of thorns from the crucifixion. Flanking the colorful and peaceful garden centerpiece are two less colorful gardens – the Garden of Eden and the Garden of Gethsemane. The Garden of Eden symbolizes humankind’s fall from grace and the world that now needs God’s compassion and forgiveness. The Garden of Gethsemane represents the end of Christ’s life and the ultimate sacrifice, so the world might know the unconditional love of God. The center portrait, shaped like the Luther Rose, symbolizes the theology of Martin Luther. Typically, the Luther Rose features a black cross surrounded by a red heart and a white rose. In the mural, the Christ child replaces the cross and heart and the rose is red to symbolize his redeeming love for the world. Directly above the rose centerpiece is the ghostly image of the crown of thorns. The depiction of Mary with Gabriel also has a double meaning. A basket of bread and roses at Mary’s feet symbolizes the “miracle of the roses” and St. Elizabeth. According to the legend, Elizabeth smuggled bread and leftovers from the Wartburg Castle kitchen to share with the poor. The practice was forbidden, so she hid the food in her robes. Suspicious courtiers on one of these trips demanded she open her robes. When she did so, the hidden bread had turned to roses. She was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church after her death in 1231.

Chimes Processional on “Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Michael Praetorius

arr. Jonathon Veenker/Jan Sandström

Narration In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God. And the Word was God. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. And the spirit of God moved over the face of the waters. Then God created all that dwelled within the firmament and the dry land. When he saw his creation God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” So God caused a mist to go up from the earth, and formed man out of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. Then God created woman from the rib of man; and they lived together in the garden the Lord God created called Eden. In the midst of the garden were the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil which the Lord commanded the man and the woman never to eat. But they tasted the forbidden fruit, and sinned against God. So God cast them out of the garden to work the ground from which they were taken, fallen from grace. And so the generations of man and woman were born into sin. Generations have cried, “Out of the depths we call to you, O Lord! Forgive our iniquities and hear our voices!”

The audience is kindly requested to refrain from applause until the completion of the program. This concert is being recorded. Please deactivate all cell phones, pagers, and watches. No flash photography or recordings are permitted. 2

And God said, “There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.”

WINTER ROSE BLOOMS

Lo, how a rose e’er blooming, And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him. from tender stem hath sprung. The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. Of Jesse’s lineage coming, And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. As men of old have sung. Amid the cold of winter, God sent from heaven’s garden a rose to show his enduring love.

Narration All of creation sings your praises, O God, for amid a cold winter’s night, a spotless rose blooms. Its beauty unfolds one petal at a time, bringing salvation to all, so that your holy garden might be restored.

A Spotless Rose. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Herbert Howells

And God Said: the Day Shall Dawn (from King David) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Arthur Honegger trans. Hancock

And God said: the day shall dawn to bring a flower, newly born; from thy stem in fullness growing, in fragrance sweet, night and morn, all my people shall adorn, with breath of life bestowing. Alleluia! Narration Arise, O Jerusalem, and look toward the east. Prepare, O Judah, for Eden has been opened to all. Rejoice all the creation! The winter rose blooms!

† Rejoice, Rejoice Believers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . arr. Karen Black Audience: Rejoice, rejoice believers, and let your light appear; the evening is advancing, and darker night is near. The bridegroom is arising and soon is drawing nigh. Up, pray and watch and wrestle; at midnight comes the cry. All Women: The watchers on the mountain proclaim the bridegroom near; go forth as he approaches with alleluias clear. The marriage feast is waiting; the gates wide open stand. Arise, O heirs of glory, the bridegroom is at hand. All Men: The saints, who here in patience their cross and sufferings bore, shall live and reign forever where sorrow is no more. Around the throne of glory the Lamb they shall behold; In triumph cast before him their diadem of gold.

A spotless rose is blowing, sprung from a tender root, of ancient seers’ foreshowing, of Jesse’s promised fruit; its fairest bud unfolds to light amid the cold, cold winter, and in the dark midnight. The rose which I am singing, whereof Isaiah said, is from its sweet root springing in Mary purest Maid; for through our God’s great love and might, the Blessed Babe she bare us in a cold, cold winter’s night. Narration The angel Gabriel was sent from God to Nazareth, to a virgin whose name was Mary. And he said, “Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you! You will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my savior.”

† There is No Rose of Such Virtue . . . . . . . . . . . . Connor Koppin ‘13 There is no rose of such virtue As is the rose that bare Jesu; Alleluia. For in this rose contained was Heaven and earth in little space; Res miranda (marvelous thing). Leave we all this worldly mirth, And follow we this joyful birth; Amen.

(Please stand)

All: Our hope and expectation, O Jesus, now appear; arise, O Son so longed for, o’er this benighted sphere. With hearts and hands uplifted, we plead, O Lord to see the day of earth’s redemption that sets your people free!

Narration The angels paused to wonder upon that holy sight, and kings and shepherds gathered to worship him that night. They all breathed in its beauty, a precious, sweet perfume, and in the bleak midwinter, the rose began to bloom.

Narration In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. So Joseph went to be enrolled with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Craig Curry In the bleak midwinter frosty wind made moan, earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; snow had fallen snow on snow, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Rejoice! Christ is born of the Virgin Mary; rejoice! The time of grace has come for which we have prayed; let us devoutly sing songs of joy. God is made human, while nature wonders; the world is renewed by Christ the King. The closed gate of Ezekiel has been passed through; from where the Light has risen, salvation is found. Therefore, let our assembly sing praises now at this time of purification; let it bless the Lord; greetings to our King. Rejoice!

Angels and archangels may have gathered there, cherubim and seraphim, they thronged the air but only his mother, in her maiden bliss, worshipped the beloved with a kiss. What can I give him? Poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb. If I were a wise man I would do my part; yet what I can I give him, give him my heart.

A Christmas Alleluia. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . arr. Undine Smith Moore

Narration In days to come Jacob will take root, Israel shall blossom and bud. The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad. And the desert shall rejoice and blossom as a rose.

Hancock When blossoms flowered ‘mid the snows upon a winter night was born the Child the Christmas rose, the King of Love and Light. The angels sang, the shepherds sang, the grateful earth rejoiced, and at his blessed birth the stars their exultation voiced. O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

Gaudete (from Two Medieval Lyrics). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Steven Sametz

Again the heart with rapture glows to greet the holy night that gave the world its Christmas Rose, its King of Love and Light. Let every voice acclaim his name, the grateful chorus swell, from paradise to earth he came that we with him might dwell, O come let us adore him, Christ the Lord.

Alleluia! Oh, Mary, what you going to name that pretty little baby? Glory! Alleluia! Some call him one thing, I think I’ll call him Jesus. Glory! Alleluia! Some call him one thing, I think I’ll call him Emmanuel. Emmanuel! Glory to that newborn King. Alleluia, alleluia! Narration The prophet Isaiah proclaims, “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion shall live together. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for a little child shall lead them.”

The

GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE

Narration Lily of lilies, he upon his mother’s knee; rose of roses, soon to be crowned with thorns on leafless tree.

All pathways by his feet are worn, his strong heart stirs the everlasting sea, his crown of thorns is twined with every thorn, his cross is every tree. Isaiah ‘twas foretold it the Rose I have in mind. with Mary we behold it the virgin mother kind. O sacred head now wounded with grief and shame weighed down; amid the cold of winter when half spent was the night. I see his blood upon the rose, his cross is every tree.

Jesus Christ the Appletree (excerpt ) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Elizabeth Poston The Tree of Life my soul has seen, laden with fruit and always green. The trees of nature fruitless be compared with Christ the appletree. Narration Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane. He took Peter, James, and John with him to pray and as they walked into the garden, Jesus became deeply distressed and said, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow, to the point of death.” Going a little farther, Jesus fell to the ground and prayed, “Abba, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet, Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”

† I See His Blood upon the Rose . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Timothy Tharaldson I see his blood upon the rose and in the stars the glory of his eyes, his body gleams amid, eternal snows, his tears fall from the skies.

Narration When Jesus Christ was yet a child, he had a garden small and wild. Wherein he cherished roses fair; and wove them into garlands there. Now once, as summer-time drew nigh, there came a troop of children by, and seeing roses on the tree, with shouts they plucked them merrily. “Do you bind roses in your hair?” they cried, in scorn, to Jesus there. The boy said humbly: “Take, I pray, all but the naked thorns away.” Then of the thorns they made a crown, and with rough fingers pressed it down, till on his forehead fair and young, red drops of blood like roses sprung.

Lo, how a rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung! I see his face in every flower; the thunder and the singing of the birds his voice, carven by his power rocks are his written words. She bore to us a Savior when half spent was the night. Lord come set us free.

NEW JERUSALEM

Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . arr. Jonathan Veenker/.John Ferguson “And he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more. Nor will there be sorrow or crying and neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things have passed away.” And God who sat upon the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new. Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. I am the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end!”

Jesus Christ the Appletree (excerpt). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Elizabeth Poston This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, it keeps my dying faith alive. Which makes my soul in haste to be with Jesus Christ the appletree. Narration For it is by grace that you have been saved, through faith and not by works. And by his grace, you shall walk in endless light.

O Day Full of Grace . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . F. Melius Christiansen O day full of grace, which we behold now gently to view ascending, thou over the earth thy reign unfold, good cheer to all mortals lending, that children of light in every clime may prove that the night is ending. How blest was that gracious midnight hour when God in our flesh was given; then flushed the dawn with light and pow’r that spread o’er the darkened heaven; Then rose o’er the world that sun divine which gloom from our hearts hath driven. Yea, were every tree endowed with speech, and every leaflet singing They never with praise his worth could reach, though earth with praise be ringing. Who fully could praise the light of life who light to our souls is bringing? Who fully could praise the Lord! With joy we depart for the promiseland, And there we shall walk in endless light. Narration Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth and I saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. And an angel of the Lord showed me the river of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God. And on either side of the river stood the Tree of Life. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying: “Behold, the dwelling of God is with them.”

arr. John Ferguson/Joshua A. Evanovich

Almighty God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through your only Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Cold are the people, winter of life, we tremble in shadows this cold endless night, frozen in the snow lie roses sleeping, flowers that will echo the sunrise, fire of hope is our only warmth, weary, its flame will be dying soon.

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, alles schläft; einsam wacht nur das traute hoch heilige Paar. Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar, Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh! Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!

Voice in the distance, call in the night, on wind you enfold us, you speak of the light, gentle on the ear you whisper softly, rumors of a dawn so embracing, breathless love awaits darkened souls, soon will we know of the morning.

(Please join in singing the last verse)

Spirit among us, shine like the star, Your light that guides shepherds and kings from afar, shimmer in the sky so empty, lonely, rising in the warmth of your Son’s love, star unknowing of night and day, Spirit we wait for your loving Son.

Silent Night, Holy Night! All is calm, all is bright ‘round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant, so tender and mild, sleep in Heavenly peace, sleep in Heavenly peace.

Even though I currently live so far away from home, each person in the Wartburg Choir has treated me like family. At the end of each concert, we sing Give Me Jesus. When we held hands and sang

this song at our first concert, I was overwhelmed by the text, “When I am alone, give me Jesus.” At that moment, it was as if each member was singing those words to comfort and reassure me that I was not alone. Art and Communication Design | Dysart The Wartburg music program has shaped my Wartburg experience in a very positive way. I bonded with musical ladies in St. Elizabeth Chorale, acquired confidence and knowledge in lessons with Carita Pfaltzgraff, realized the depth of music and gained a choir family in Wartburg 18

Choir, and learned how to relax and have fun while performing with Castle Singers. Traveling to Europe with the Wartburg Choir and Castle Singers were two of the greatest experiences of my life. Wartburg College choirs opened my eyes to the power, emotion, and beauty of music.

Impact Our Students As we rejoice this Christmas season in the gift of God’s son, we also celebrate the gifts of alumni, parents, and friends who support Wartburg College in so many ways. As the year draws to a close, we invite you to make a difference in the lives of our students through a gift to the college.

• An annual gift will impact all areas of the student experience, from the academic programs that distinguish a Wartburg education to co-curricular programs that encompass music, campus ministry, student organizations, and athletics. This year, the Wartburg Board of Regents Challenge will match all new and increased annual gifts.

• A planned gift to Wartburg can impact lives for generations to come through a bequest, an insurance policy, a charitable remainder trust, a charitable gift annuity, or an IRA or other qualified retirement plan.

• Establishing a scholarship or adding to an existing scholarship will provide critical funds to make a Wartburg education possible for current and future students.

For more information, call the Wartburg Development Office toll-free at 866-219-9115 or go online at www.wartburg.edu/give.

About Wartburg College Wartburg College, named after the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, Germany, traces its roots to 1852, when pastor Wilhelm Löhe of Neuendettelsau, Bavaria, sent Georg Grossmann and five students to found a teacher-training school for German immigrants in Saginaw, Mich. The college moved several times before establishing a permanent home in Waverly in 1935. A liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Wartburg is dedicated to challenging and nurturing students for lives of leadership and service as a spirited expression of their faith and learning. The college enrolls 1,747 students, who come from 29 U.S. states and 53 countries. Wartburg awards Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, and Bachelor of Music Education degrees. Its more than 50 academic majors include the state’s oldest undergraduate social work major and the only music therapy major offered by an Iowa private college.
