You may also access the Web site at www.The-W.org to print a registration form. We had a wonderful summer with Community Recreation, the swimming program, and fitness classes at The W! With an unusually wet summer, we were able to bring our tennis, soccer, minor league, and tee ball inside The W. Our members shared the fieldhouse as they walked and our kids played. It was a very positive experience for everyone involved and really showcased the value of our facility as no Community Recreation classes had to be canceled due to weather! This fall and winter we will once again offer classes for children and adults. There really is something for everyone at The W. Research shows that we can keep our bodies and minds young longer by moving more. There is strong evidence that the health benefits of exercise and activity help to lower our risk of colon and breast cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, as well as increasing cognitive functions. These same activities are so important to our children as indoor, sedentary games seem to take over their lives. The advice is clear for all of us: Keep moving! At The W we can offer something to keep everyone of every age happy, moving, and healthier. Simply find the activity that suits you best, sign up and enjoy! You can dance, swim, walk, play basketball, tennis, sign up for aerobics or body toning. Your kids can play flag football, basketball, swim, play volleyball or soccer, or jump, tumble and roll. The classes for children in Kolor Kollisions and Kindermusik encourage the arts and music as well, so get them involved! Come and join us this fall and winter as we expand the classes for you. It’s an exceptional place to be for fun, health, and meeting new people. It can be life changing and life enhancing! Be a part of The W and bring your family as we explore new classes and new opportunities for health and fitness.

Mon-Thurs: 5:30 a.m.–10 p.m. Fri: 5:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m. Sat: 7 a.m.–6:30 p.m. Sun: 1–10 p.m.

We look forward to seeing you this fall and winter at The W!

New Health and Wellness Programs Survivor Care According to the American Cancer Society, nearly 1.3 million Americans will be diagnosed this year with cancer, the nation’s second-leading killer. The Survivor Care program will provide exercise for cancer patients using minimal strength conditioning, combined with flexibility training and low-impact aerobic exercise. Depending on chemotherapy or radiation schedules, each patient’s workout may include daily walks, use of rubber tubing for resistance training, fitness balls or dumbbells. Classes can vary in length and structure and will be personalized.

Heart Happy The number one killer in the United States is cardiovascular disease according to the American Heart Association. More than 60 million Americans are recovering from a stroke or heart failure, or suffer from high blood pressure, heart defects, hardening of the arteries, or other circulatory diseases. Depending on a cardiac patient’s specific situation, Heart Happy can assist with the bridge from the clinical setting to mainstream workouts. Research shows that strength workouts help patients increase stamina for daily routines and reduce day-to-day demands on the heart.

Wheel of Life Spending long hours in a wheelchair can be uncomfortable and lead to uneasiness. Keeping the body moving as much as possible in a wheelchair should be a regular part of a daily fitness program. Regular wheelchair exercise will help increase strength and flexibility, improve mobility, strengthen the heart and lungs, and help control weight. Workouts are tailored to each patient’s individual situation. For details on any of these new programs, contact Dawn Wiegmann, RN, at 319-352-8437 or dawn.wiegmann@wartburg.edu. Documentation from a physician is required prior to beginning any of the above programs.

3

 Refunds In order to keep things fair to all participants, each withdrawal from a program will be assessed a $5 processing fee whether a refund check is issued or credit is put on account. There will be no transfers. Any changes will be treated as a refund and participants must re-register for the desired class. No refunds will be given following the registration deadline. Each program’s deadline is indicated by the through date. If a deadline date is not indicated, it will be seven calendar days prior to the program start date. If a medical problem arises during the activity/class, a physician’s written excuse must be presented stating that participation is restricted. In the case of a medical excuse, a percentage of whatever class time remains will be refunded. If the program/activity is canceled by the department, you will have the choice of having a full refund issued to your account or a refund check being issued to the person that paid for the enrollment.

Everyone Belongs! If you or a family member have special needs and would like to participate in a program, we will be happy to make accommodations to meet your needs. Please contact our office at 352-8726 if you would like more information regarding programs and/or accommodations for program participants according to the Americans with Disabilities Act. The W is a participating member in the “Together We Play” program.

REDUCED PROGRAM FEES Reduced price programs are available. Families or members of families are eligible for reduced price programs if they are currently receiving food stamps. Youth are eligible for reduced price programs if they received reduced price or free hot lunches. A form is available at The W Office. Verification will take approximately one week and must be completed before you can register for any programs at the discounted price. A new form must be filled out each year. Learn-to-Swim Program Swim lessons include all levels of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program. Lessons are taught by American Red Cross certified water safety instructors. Learn-to-Swim teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to teach people of all ages to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water and give students a positive learning experience. * Suggested swim lessons schedule: Please allow 6 months between group or private lessons. This will allow children to develop the skills they have learned and be able to advance to the next level/lessons with success. Parent/Child—This class is designed to provide experiences and activities for children aged 6 months– 1 ½ years and their parent/guardian(s). Skills covered include: asking for permission before entering water, enter and exiting the water in a safe manner, feeling comfortable in the water, explore submerging to the mouth, nose, eyes and completely under water, exploring buoyancy on the front and back positions, changing body position in the water, experience wearing a lifejacket. Swim diapers are required for this course. Parent/Toddler—This class is designed to help children 1 ½-3 years and their parent/guardian(s). Parent/ Toddler classes are designed to establish expectations for adult supervision, learn more ways to enter and exit the water in a safe manner, explore submerging in a rhythmic pattern, glide on the front and back with assistance, perform combined stroke on front and back with assistance, change body position in water, experience wearing a lifejacket. Recommended ages: 3- and 4-year-olds.

Swim Lesson expectations • Participants are only allowed to miss one class. Going during class shortens learning time. • Children in diapers are required to wear swim diapers. • Long hair should be tied back so it doesn’t get in child’s face. • Only swim participants (except parent/child and parent/toddler) are allowed on the pool deck. Spectators (parents, guardian, and other family members) may watch from the window in the Zesty Orange. This will be strictly enforced. • Cancellations or postponements will be posted on www.the-w-org, announced on KWAY 99.3 FM, or you may call the Welcome Desk, 352-8311.
