n 2013 the Waseca County Historical Society celebrated its 75th birthday. It also reopened its exhibits after adding a lift and main floor bathroom to the Second Avenue NE center. The society was established in 1938 to collect and preserve the history of Waseca County. The museum is located in the former 1917 Waseca Methodist Church at 315 Second Ave. NE in Waseca. Pay special attention to the building’s dome and former altar, painted by the late Mark Barens who created ethnic motifs to represent the county’s Native Americans and the immigrants who settled here. The museum offers annual exhibitions, has a Retro Gift Shop and a Waseca County Timeline on the second floor and a year-round exhibit. Across the street, the Bailey-Lewer Research Library, a branch of the Church of Latter Day Saints library, houses records, newspapers and documents tracing the history of Waseca County. Included are more than 37,000 artifact records, 15,000 photographs and more than 300,000 archived records. Members have free access to microfilm reader/printers, newspaper microfilm and access to the website and library research. here are 50 lakes within a half-hour drive of Waseca, including Lake Elysian near Janesville, Reeds Lake west of Waseca, St. Olaf Lake outside of New Richland, and Tetonka and Sakatah lakes in Waterville. Waseca’s prized lakes welcome visitors at both the east and west ends of town and offer ample opportunity for water sports, fishing, picnics or a quiet walk. Clear Lake, the large 652-acre lake on the east entrance to Waseca, is the place to go for fishing, boating, water skiing, sailing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. One of Clear Lake’s highlights is bike trail loved by walkers, joggers and bikers looking for fresh air and exercise. The trail hugs the lake’s shoreline before connecting to trails within the city. The lake is filled with walleye, northern pike, sunfish, perch and large mouth bass. In the winter, Clear Lake is home to dozens of ice fishing houses and snowmobile activities including the
Waseca County Historical Society’s ice harvest and the Kruger Memorial snowmobile races each February. On the west side of town is Loon Lake, a quiet 80-acre lake with a picturesque and historic island. Loon Lake offers a perfect place to fish, canoe, watch wildlife or to picnic in the tree-filled park equipped with tables, playground equipment and a 2.2-mile walking path. Fish for bluegills, crappies, bass, northern pike and bullheads at Loon Lake, an “electric boat motors only” lake. A boat ramp is located on 10th St. NW and a fishing pier is within walking distance. Shoreline restoration projects have added native wildflowers and improved water quality and stabilized the shoreline of both lakes. Across southern Minnesota, lakes provide recreation in all seasons, with bait shops, hotels, resorts and campgrounds available for supplies and overnight stays.

aseca County’s parks and trails provide leisure and recreational activities for all ages in a wide variety of settings and locations. On the east side of Waseca, on beautiful Clear Lake, is Maplewood Park, one of the last remnants of the big woods that once covered southern Minnesota. Take the road to the top of the hill to enjoy paths that wind through the woods, discover native wildflowers and appreciate the quiet beauty of Maplewood, a true Waseca treasure. Once the home of private cabins and a stately hotel, Maplewood became public land and is now the site of nature walks and the Chautauqua Revival which will take place at Trowbridge Park in 2015. Maplewood Park is just one of 15 city parks covering 200 acres of Waseca land. The city features everything from small neighborhood parks where Community Education activities are offered in the summer, to the 24-acre Northeast Park, site of the Waseca Water Park and other recreational facilities.

innesota’s Agricultural Interpretive Center — was commissioned in 1978 to tell the story of Minnesota’s agricultural, past and present. In 2000, a new Visitor Center was dedicated to provide an entrance to the one-mile Time Lane Trail and annual celebrations. It is also the site of offices, conference and reception space, a gift shop and observation tour. Located west of Waseca on 120 acres of farmland at 7367 360th Avenue, Farmamerica includes and 1850s homestead, a one-room school house, a country church, a blacksmith shop and town hall. The 1930s farm is complete with a barn, farmhouse and garden with the feed mill leading to a modern farm site. Volunteer farmhands give tours and historic interpretation, repair artifacts, operate the tram down Time Lane Trail, care for the animals and crops, churn butter and entertain. en miles west of Waseca on Old Hwy. 14 is the community of Janesville, home to 2,256 residents. Janesville was platted in 1869 for the general manager of Winona & St. Peter railroad. In the winter of 1869-70 buildings were moved to the new town and in the spring of 1870, the new town was established. It is also the home to the Hay Daze celebration, a weekend event which takes place each June, when streets are closed and the entire community comes together to celebrate. Hay Daze is capped off by a parade through Janesville on Sunday afternoon. A town of strong traditions, Janesville celebrated its sesquicentennial during Hay Daze in 2006. Community members put their best feet forward to perform for the hometown crowd in the annual Hee Haw show.

ust 13 miles south of Waseca at the crossroads of Hwy. 13 and Hwy. 30, the city of New Richland is home to 1,203 residents. The community’s roots can be found in the Norwegian settlers who settled the rich farmland around St. Olaf Lake and the Le Sueur River and the arrival of the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad in 1877. Churches were built, businesses were established and the village, which was formed in 1858, grew. The community is also proud of its community spirit, the Riverview Golf Course, the bike trail from New Richland to St. Olaf Lake and Park, the New Richland Care Center, Country Neighbors, City Park, medical and dental facilities, its hometown
bank, many successful businesses and consolidated New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva School District. The school district’s website is www.nrheg.k12.mn.us Each July, New Richland celebrates its past and future with Farm and City Days, which includes a carnival, medallion hunt, street dance and parade. With its restaurants, lake, parks, recreation opportunities and civic pride, New Richland is a community built around its roots. The city’s motto: History is ours, Future is yours.
