Minnesota Valley Health Center offers flu prevention tips It’s not too early to receive a flu shot. “Each of us can take steps now to reduce the likelihood of a severe or prolonged flu season,” says Ann Johnson, Quality Coordinator/Infection Prevention and Control at Minnesota Valley Health Center. “This year’s flu vaccine has been updated to better match the kinds of flu virus that occurred in our communities last year. We are confident we will see an increase in the effectiveness of the vaccine.” Vaccination is especially important for children, adults 65 and older, pregnant women and people with asthma, diabetes and other long-term conditions who are at high risk from flu complications. Most experts believe that flu viruses are spread most often by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or possibly their nose. “Getting a flu shot is one of the most effective ways each of us can take to reduce the risk of getting and spreading the illness to others,” says Kim Lewis, Director of Nursing at the Minnesota Valley Health Center hospital. “Supplies of the flu vaccine are plentiful and readily available from your local health care provider or other consumer outlets, including many pharmacies.” Officials remind the public, in addition to getting the seasonal flu vaccine; there are other steps everyone can take to prevent contracting and spreading the flu. They include: Vaccination is especially important for children, adults 65 and older, pregnant women and • If you aren’t feeling well, stay home people with asthma, diabetes and other long-term conditions who are at high risk from flu • If your children are ill, keep them at home complications, according to the Minnesota Valley Health Center. (Metro Creative Services) • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The signs and • Cover your cough symptoms of the seasonal flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, • Wash your hands with warm water and soap, or use an alcohol-based sanitizer body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Paying attention to ADHD ADHD stands for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. It is a condition that is common in young and old alike, and can occur in both males and females. It tends to start during the early grade school years and very often persists into adulthood. There are three different types of ADHD, so not everyone who has this condition acts the same way. • Predominantly inattentive type. This type is most common in girls, but can occur in boys as well. Some of the most common symptoms are: o Daydreaming o Losing track of time o Easily distracted Schuh o Procrastinates o Difficulty finishing tasks o Seems not to listen • Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type. This is the least common type of ADHD, and when it does occur, it tends to happen in very young children. Signs of this type of ADHD include: o Lots of energy o Restless, fidgets, can’t sit still o Impatient o Blurts out statements, interrupts often o Aggressive behavior toward others • Combined type. This is, by far, the most common type of ADHD and the most noticeable. Signs of combined type ADHD include: o Loud and disruptive o Prone to breaking rules o Gets into trouble repeatedly o Easily distracted o Frustrated with school o Difficulty finishing tasks

Welcome to the TEAM!

While many of those symptoms are just the way kids sometimes behave, a parent may suspect ADHD if it’s consistent behavior lasting longer than six months, occurs at home and school, and causes problems in relationships with other children and adults. Adults with ADHD have similar symptoms, but often somewhat different problems from children. ADHD in adulthood might manifest as having problems staying organized, remembering things, keeping schedules and managing household responsibilities. There can also be issues with listening to others, interrupting, making very quick decisions and a chronic sense of boredom. There are many things that ADHD is not. It has nothing to do with intelligence. Many brilliant people in our history have had ADHD, such as Benjamin Franklin and John F. Kennedy. Also, ADHD has nothing to do with being lazy, lacking self-control or not trying hard enough. People with ADHD have brains that work differently than those without the disorder. Treatment for ADHD can be of two types. The first involves learning techniques to help improve organization, completion of tasks, time management and strategies to improve impulse control. The second type of treatment is medication. Many people benefit from a combination of both. Evaluation and treatment should be considered when the problems caused by ADHD are either making it hard to function at school, home, work or in relationships, or are causing suffering for the person with ADHD. A mental health professional can perform an evaluation and determine if ADHD is present. If you are concerned that you or a loved one may have ADHD, contact your health care provider team. Amanda Schuh is a mental health nurse practitioner in the Behavioral Health Department at Mayo Clinic Health System. For more information, visit mayoclinichealthsystem.org.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month By STEPHANIE HILL Special to the Herald

There are two words a woman does not want to hear during an annual check-up — breast cancer. Each October women and men wear pink to help raise awareness of breast cancer. While there is no definite cause and no cure for breast cancer, there are things women can do to start noting how their breasts normally look and feel so they can report changes to their health care provider. The American Cancer Society recommends that women in their 20s should be told about the benefits to doing breast self-exams (BSE). By doing BSE, lumps or other changes can be felt. To learn how to do a BSE, talk with your health care provider. Once women turn 40, it is recommended they have a mammogram annually and continue to do so while they are in good health. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. The breast is compressed between two plates for a few seconds to flatten and spread breast tissue. While uncomfortable, it produces a clear image of the tissue. The use of mammograms is endorsed by the American Cancer Society because of the finding and reporting of breast changes early. By having annual screenings, health care providers can monitor any changes and if cancer is found, it can be found early, increasing the chance of survival. If having a first mammogram ease anxiety and ask the technician what to expect about how the procedure works and how soon the results will be known. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Oct. 16 is National Mammogram Day. River’s Edge Hospital & Clinic supports breast cancer awareness all year long with Mammogram Mondays – a no appointment needed day for women to come in and have their annual mammogram. Mammogram hours are 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Stephanie Hill is River’s Edge Hospital & Clinic’s chief marketing and development officer.

How to find time for exercise · Reexamine your free time. Few adults, and especially those juggling families and careers, have an abundance of free time. But reexamining the ways you are spending your free time may help you uncover some moments for daily exercise. The Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition notes that adults between the ages of 18 and 64 need at least two and a half hours each week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity. While that may seem like a lot, it's only slightly more than 20 minutes per day. It helps to supplement such aerobic activity with some strength-training activities at least two days per week. Try waking up 20 to 30 minutes earlier each day, using that time to hit the treadmill or jog around the neighborhood. You likely won't be affected by waking up earlier, and you won't need to alter your existing schedule for the rest of the day, either. If mornings aren't your thing, make better use of your lunch hour, going for a jog or visiting your company's exercise facilities if that option is available to you. · Work while you exercise. Technology has made it easier than ever before to stay connected to the office even when you are nowhere near your desk. Men and women who can't seem to find time to exercise often cite the demands of their job as the primary reason behind their inactivity, but those same individuals can use the technology at their disposal, be it smartphones that allow them keep track of work emails or tablets that make it possible to connect remotely to office servers, to work while they exercise. Bring your smartphone or tablet with you when you work out on the elliptical or jog on the treadmill. · Reduce your sedentary time. A 2008 study from Australian researchers found that people who regularly break up their sedentary time, including the hours they sit behind their desk at the office, with movement had healthier waist circumferences, body mass indexes and triglycerides than those who did not. While hourly breaks to walk around the office might not seem like exercise, such breaks can benefit your long-term health. · Get creative. Many people associate daily exercise with private gyms, and while gyms can serve as excellent motivators and great places to get full-body workouts, time involved in driving to and from the gym can make it difficult to commit to gym memberships. But you don't need a gym membership to live a healthy lifestyle. When Diet and exercise are essential components of a healthy lifestyle. While even the busiest men and women can find ways to eat healthy, finding time to exercise can be possible, take the stairs instead of an elevator and park further away from your office door so you get a small cardiovascular workout on your way into and out of the ofmore difficult. fice. Seasonal allergy triggers Pet dander Dander are flakes of skin in an animal's fur or hair. Because of their microscopic size, these flakes of skin can easily attach and remain attached to bedding, fabrics and furniture. Many people keep their pets even if they develop allergies to dander. Should such a situation arise, do not allow your pet into your bedroom, bathe the animal regularly and remove carpeting in favor of bare floors or washable rugs. Mold Mold is a furry growth of minute fungal hyphae that is often found in damp parts of a home, such as basements and bathrooms. Mold also can be found in grass and mulch, triggering allergic reactions when men and women spend time in their yards. To avoid an allergic reaction triggered by mold, make sure moist areas of your home get fresh air regularly and routinely clean ceilings or other areas where mold may grow. Hay fever sufferers may sneeze or experience a runny nose and itchy eyes when pollen spreads. But allergy sufferers also can combat high pollen counts by staying indoors on windy days and closing their windows and running their air conditioners.

New Crisis Link is resource for Minnesotans’ emergency needs A new Crisis Link has been launched as part of MinnesotaHelp.info, the state’s comprehensive website for services, resources and information. Crisis Link connects people with resources for dealing with a variety of intense situations, including mental health and/or substance abuse problems for both children and adults, need for emergency housing or longer term housing, fear of being harmed, or need for health care, food, a job or transportation. “We want to make sure that people know there is a single place, the Crisis Link, they can go to get information and phone numbers for helping professionals and agencies that meet a variety of immediate needs,” said Human Services Commissioner Lucinda Jesson. As prominently stated on Crisis Link, anyone in immediate danger or need should call 9-1-1. Crisis Link has an extensive listing of contact information for helping organizations, primarily government and nonprofit agencies, including suicide and domestic violence hotlines. It features an online chat service available from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays to ensure people get to the information they need. Like the rest of the MinnesotaHelp.info site, Crisis Link uses responsive design so no matter what device is used to visit the site, from a desktop computer to a smartphone, the browser will automatically format the information so it is easy to see and use. Crisis Link is integrated into Minnesota’s information and assistance system that includes, in addition to the Minnesotahelp.info website, the Senior LinkAge Line at 1-800-333-2433, Disability Linkage Line at 1-866-333-2466 and Veterans LinkAge Line at 1-888-LinkVet. This system is supported by Minnesota state agencies, including the Minnesota Department of Human Services and the Minnesota Board on Aging.

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women who have been diagnosed with cancer can take to the Internet to explore their options with regard to clinical trials. Such trials typically explore potential cancer treatments, and researchers conducting these studies need participants to determine if these prospective treatments are effective. Sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, ClinicalTrials.gov lists tens of thousands of studies in all 50 states within the United States and 189 countries overall. Interested men and women can search certain using into the site's search engine to find studies linked to their disease or conditions. Such an extensive database can be a great resource for cancer patients looking for clinical trials, but the sheer volume of studies within the database can be hard for some to navigate, leading to confusion with regard to participation eligibility. But men and women diagnosed with cancer should know that there are more specialized websites that list clinical trials, such as BreastCancerTrials.org, which can make it easier for patients to find trials relevant to their disease. BreastCancerTrials.org includes only studies already registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, but the description of each study is rewritten in an effort to make it easier for patients to understand each study and the eligibility requirements to participate. Additional clinical trial-matching services, such as CancerTrialsHelp.org, are available online for patients looking to explore their options with regard to clinical trials.
