Le Sueur County Community & Visitors Guide 7
Le Sueur County Located in southern Minnesota, Le Sueur County is about an hour south of the Twin Cities and known for its rolling hills, acres and acres of fertile farmland and 100 lakes. The largest, Lake Washington, is more than 1,500 acres. Every summer, visitors from across the region flock to Le Sueur County to enjoy camping, boating, fishing and a variety of water sports. In the winter, many of the ice-covered lakes boast clusters of fish houses where avid anglers happily await their catch. The county seat, in Le Center (population 2,504), is home to the Richardsonian Romanesque revival courthouse, built in
1896 of brick and local Kasota stone. Atop its tower is the figure of Justice. The courthouse is where the five-member Board of Commissioners meet. Visit co.le-sueur. mn.us. It’s the 38th largest of Minnesota’s 87 counties, with a population of 27,703, according to the 2010 U.S. Census. The county’s 10 cities have distinct personalities and feature a number of celebrations, festivals and events throughout the year. New Prague is the largest city, with a population of 7,439, though only about 3,081 live in the Le Sueur County portion. The remainder reside in the northern part of the city which lies in Scott County. The city of Le Sueur is known as the home to the Minnesota Valley Canning Co, a precursor to Green Giant Co. where the famous Jolly Green Giant made his home. The company no longer has facilities in the city of 4,040, but residents continue to honor its ties to the company during its annual Giant Celebration. The city of Montgomery is the third largest in the county, at 2,957.

Le Sueur County Community & Visitors Guide 9
History Le Sueur County is named after French explorer, Pierre Charles Le Sueur, who in 1700 was the first white man known to have ventured up what is now called the Minnesota River. Le Sueur’s group was impressed with the high hills, prairies filled with buffalo herds, thick virgin forests, rippling waters, and bluffs of limestone and sandstone. It would be another 150 years before pioneers came to settle and build up their farms, homes and businesses in the “Big Woods.” In 1853, the territorial legislature of Minnesota passed an act establishing a number of counties along the Minnesota River. Le Sueur County was among them. The earliest settlements in Le Sueur County took place along the river, which, as a navigable stream, provided a highway into this part of the Minnesota Territory. The first permanent settlers had already arrived by steamboat in 1851 and established a site that would become the county’s first town, Kasota. Settlements at Le Sueur and Ottawa soon followed. Word spread about the splendor and opportunity to be found in the Minnesota River valley, attracting more

immigrants who moved further inland until each township had established settlements. Le Sueur was the first to grow into a town of any size and it was designated by the legislature as the county seat. Due to the condition of early roads, it was difficult for county residents to get to the county seat to conduct business. The community of Cleveland attempted to acquire it and held it for a short time in 1875 until Le Sueur was again designated. Then a number of businessmen, led by L.Z. Rogers of Waterville, who wanted the county seat near the center of the county, acquired a tract of 160 acres at what is now Le Center and platted it. They offered the use of a newly constructed two-story brick building to the county board for a courthouse if a referendum of the county residents to move the county seat to this new location, which they called Le Sueur Center. The referendum passed. The county offices were moved to the new location in 1876. The county seat has remained there ever since. The relocation had the effect of dividing the journey to the county seat as equally as possible between the residents of the various portions of the county.
History The name Le Sueur Center was changed to Le Center in 1930. The Le Sueur County Courthouse was built in 1896-97 with extensive remodeling taking place in 1974-75 and again in 1994-95. Le Sueur County began with four settlers in a board house on the site of Kasota. Today 27,000 residents in 10 towns and 14 townships call Le Sueur County home.
