JAMES FRANCO A: She is! The Oscar-winning star of the movie The Help, who has a recurring role as Regina on the CBS series Mom, wrote her first novel with a nod to her childhood faves Nancy Drew and Encyclopedia Brown. Her second book came out in 2015, and she is working on a third. In the meantime, Spencer, 45, plays a teacher in the upcoming movie The Great Gilly Hopkins, which was adapted from the National Book Award–winning children’s novel of the same name. It’s in theaters Feb. 19.

How did you learn about the Kennedy assassination? It [happened during] my parents’ generation, but I was taught all about JFK. Then Oliver Stone’s [JFK] came out and it was one of my favorite movies when I was younger. I did a project in Dallas decades ago and spent a lot of time exploring Dealey Plaza and studying the conspiracy theories. What obstacles does Jake face? One device Stephen King introduced into the story is “the past is set.” So when my character goes back and tries to change things, there is a mysterious force that doesn’t want events to be changed.

Can you tell me what Andrew Lincoln starred in before The Walking Dead? —Edward M., Saginaw, Mich. Remember Mark, the young man who fell in love with his best friend’s wife (Keira Knightley) in Love Actually (2003)? That was the British actor’s first major U.S. exposure. In 2010 he starred in Cinemax’s Strike Back, waging war against terrorists. That same year, he began battling zombies as Rick Grimes on The Walking Dead, which returns tonight for the second half of its sixth season.

You teach graduate-level film classes through your own Los Angeles film school, Studio4. Is that your way of paying it forward? Definitely. My wife and I like to keep framed photos on display, but we never know whether to order matte or glossy prints, and whether to use nonglare or standard glass in the frame. What works best? —T.J., Denver, Colo.

First, do you like cameras that take really sharp photos? If so, you shouldn’t order matte prints or use nonglare glass because you defeat the purpose of taking a sharp photo! Regardless, I suggest always ordering glossy prints unless you intend to pass them around to friends and family, in which case matte prints will resist fingerprints and look better longer. For framing under glass, only glossy prints make sense. The prints look sharper, and when paired with standard glass, they’ll keep that look. Under nonglare glass, the look will be dulled, but if you like that kind of glass because it’s easy on the eyes, matte prints don’t make sense. The prints look less sharp, and with nonglare glass on top of them, you’ll get twice the dulling effect! So when framing, always go for glossy prints. As for the glass, I suggest standard glass for prints up to 8 by 10 inches because the subjects are small—you need all the sharpness you can get. Nonglare glass is better for hanging prints 11 by 14 inches or larger, at least in a home, where good lighting and viewing angles are limited. ifteen years after Ben Stiller directed and starred in the first Zoolander movie, he is back with Zoolander 2, a laugh-outloud comedy about the further misadventures of dim-witted supermodels Derek Zoolander (Stiller) and his buddy Hansel (Owen Wilson). The movie hilariously skewers fashion designers, narcissistic rock stars, James Bond movies, capitalism and other targets ripe for parody. Zoolander 2 is in many ways Stiller’s valentine to his beloved mother, actresscomedian Anne Meara, who died in May 2015. The humor in the film, with its raillery against stupidity and

Using a teaspoon, scoop chocolate onto a parchmentlined sheet pan, using the back of the spoon to create 1½-inch circles. Top with chopped nuts, dried fruit or flaked sea salt, as desired. Refrigerate 2 minutes or until set. Store in a cool, dry place. Makes 24. Tell me about Zoolander 2. It’s practically 15 years after we did the first Zoolander movie, a goofy comedy. It has style. It’s found its audience. The cult status it has is what I’m happiest about. I wanted it to appeal to the fans of the first one with a new story. These guys are male models. Suddenly, 15 years later, they’re old news. How did you and your wife, Christine Taylor, meet? I was directing a pilot for Fox, starring Jack Black, called Heat Vision and Jack [1999]. My wife came in to audition for the role of the sexy sheriff. She had been in the Brady Bunch movies and they were pushing her on me. She came in and she was great. And? I was single. I’d come out of a long relationship with [actress] Jeanne Tripplehorn. Christine was coming out of a relationship too. We went on a date and it clicked. She got you on the rebound? We were both on the rebound. And we just jumped. We got married pretty quickly. What attracted you? I turned around one day and said, “Wow, I’m happy with her. We connect. I’m enjoying being with her all the time!” It just felt right. Why does it work? Because we both want to make it work. We both love each other, and we also laugh a lot. She’s one of the funniest people I know. Growing up, I watched my parents. What one thing do you love the most? To laugh, to have a sense of humor, even in the worst situations. That’s something I got from my folks. To the end, my mother never lost her sense of humor. Your mother was an Irish Catholic who converted to Reform Judaism. How are you raising your kids? We raise them with no specific religious affiliation. Christine’s mom is pretty religious [Catholic]. I’m Jewish, so they know about both faiths. I feel connected to my Jewish heritage and also to the Irish Catholic side. Both share a lot.
