Why did Samantha Bee leave The Daily Show? Her pieces were some of my favorites. —Sarah P., Houston, Texas A: Bee, 46, left The Daily Show last May after a 12-year run to begin production on her new TBS series, Full Frontal With Samantha Bee, premiering Feb. 8. The series will showcase the Toronto native’s views on politics and pop culture, as well as her sharp interview skills. In addition, Bee and her husband, Jason Jones, also a former Daily Show correspondent, are producing the 10-episode TBS comedy The Detour, starring Jones and Natalie Zea as a couple with their kids on a weeklong road trip.

What’s next for Jason Sudeikis? Any chance he is making a movie with fiancée Olivia Wilde? —Marty R., Chapel Hill, N.C. A: There are no immediate plans for the engaged couple to work together. Wilde, 31, is currently starring in the HBO series Vinyl, premiering Feb. 14, while Sudeikis’ latest leading lady is Rebecca Hall, who stars with him in Tumbledown, a romantic comedy-drama in theaters Feb. 12 about a New York writer (Sudeikis) who falls for the widow (Hall) of a famous folk singer. Sudeikis, 40, and Wilde’s current coproduction is their son, Otis, born April 2014.

Mistress of

‘Murder’

The secret of who shot her character, Annalise Keating, has been revealed, but there is much more to be disclosed as the second half of season two of How to Get Away With Murder gets underway Feb. 11 on ABC. Meanwhile, here are five things you may not know about Viola Davis, 50.

WALTER SCOTT ASKS...

REBEL WILSON

The Australian-born funny girl stole her scenes in Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. Now Wilson, 35, has the co-starring role opposite Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) in How to Be Single, in theaters Feb. 12. How is Single more than a girls-just-wannahave-fun movie? It’s not a romantic comedy where the girls are just searching for the right guy. It’s the opposite of that. They’re enjoying their time being single and living it up in New York City. Your character, Robin, seems to have the dating thing down. How would you compare her style to yours? I like going out and having a fun time, but Robin does it every night. She’s also kind of a functioning alcoholic, which I’m not. In the film, I’m getting smashed every night and having one-night stands. I’m more conservative— I would say much more classy.

Email your questions for Walter Scott to personality@parade.com

Is there Pitch Perfect 3 in your future? Definitely. We’re filming that in the middle of 2016. It’s crazy that our little musical theater lovefest turned into a huge franchise. Your initial goal in coming to America was to land a film role. That’s done. What’s your new goal? I definitely want to win an Oscar. I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon because they don’t really treat comedies in the same way as they treat dramatic roles, and the right dramatic role hasn’t come along yet. At the moment, I’m developing comedy films to headline. I’d love to be the No. 1 female in box office in comedy feature films.

Wilson can sing—but why doesn’t she want to record an album? Go to Parade.com/rebelwilson to find out.

1. She and her husband, Julius Tennon, spent their honeymoon at George Clooney’s estate in Italy. 2. The Help star began wearing wigs after losing half her hair at age 28 to alopecia areata caused by stress. 3. Davis is the first African American woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. 4. An inspirational speaker, she donates a large portion of her fees to charities, including Upward Bound and Hunger Is. 5. One of her favorite ways to relax is in her home’s Jacuzzis. (She’s got two!)

Beatlemania Revisited

Parade has covered the Beatles from their earliest days in the U.S. to their milestone moments. Take a look back.

The Beatles, How Long Will They Last? Our Aug. 2, 1964, article examines Beatlemania six months after the Fab Four’s U.S. debut on The Ed Sullivan Show, noting, “In the hectic, colorful history of show business there has been nothing or no one to rival their fantastic success.” Got that right, but the author, Lloyd Shearer, seemingly not a fan, went on to ask, “How long can the Beatles maintain their unprecedented popularity?” He also quoted a psychiatrist as saying, “In appearance the Beatles present an impression of sexual ambiguity.” Hah!

Million The number of viewers who watched the Beatles’ first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964—a record at the time and the highest rating a musical act on the show ever received. Second place? Elvis Presley with 60 million.

The Beatles and Marriage

In April of 1969 Parade explored the Beatles’ romantic relationships (they were all married at the time) and the impact those marriages might have on the future of the band. The article concluded, “To date, marriage has not adversely affected their popularity,” but we had a good laugh at author Shearer’s opinion of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s wedding. “The way-out pair provided irrefutable evidence that man is indeed descended from apes and simple primordial protoplasmic cells,” he editorialized.

irth, death, marriage, life, what it means to be a person, to have equal rights, to be fair—this is the stuff the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) examines every year, making decisions that become the law of the land. “The justices of the Supreme Court establish—by interpreting laws and a constitution— a set of laws for the country. Without that we have no laws,” says Nina Totenberg, legal affairs correspondent for National Public Radio. Thousands of cases are sent to the Court every year. If four of the nine justices agree a case should be heard, the Court asks the federal courts to send up all the

information about the case so they can review it (known as granting a writ of certiorari). The Court chooses cases with national significance: Do kids have the right to pray in school? Should workers pay fees to labor unions if they don’t want to be a member? Did President Obama exceed his powers in trying to protect illegal immigrants from deportation? They also take cases when the lower courts can’t agree how to interpret the law involved; SCOTUS’ decision then becomes the precedent that every court in the U.S. has to follow. I was surprised when my face got sunburned when I went skiing recently. I wasn’t on the slopes long, and I know the sun is at a much lower angle in the winter. How can this happen?

IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT CANCER. ALONE.

—S.G., Paso Robles, Calif.

Sunlight reflects strongly off snow, the way it reflects off sand at the beach. So in addition to the UV rays striking your face directly (from above), you’re exposed to the rays that are redirected from below. Some people call this phenomenon “snowburn.” And then there’s the fact that the sun’s UV rays are much stronger at higher altitudes, so mountain activities bring even greater risk. Skiing calls for heavy-duty sunblock.

Why are manhole covers round versus any other geometrical shape? —James Arndt, Garden Grove, Calif.

It’s time to clear up this longstanding misconception. The standard answer is, “A round shape is the only one that will prevent the cover from falling through the opening.” This is not correct. A round cover will fall through a matching round opening no matter which way you turn it. This is not the case with other shapes. For example, a square cover will not fall through a matching square opening when simply rotated on a horizontal plane in any way where the corners don’t match with the hole. The correct answer is more complicated. A round manhole FEBRUARY 7, 2016 | 7

cover will not fall through a round opening only when the opening is made smaller than the cover. This is also the case for other geometric shapes, but the difference in the size of the cover and the size of the opening needs to be greater to prevent the cover from slipping through when it’s rotated in various planes. So the round shape is more practical, assuming you want the cover shape and opening shape to be the same. (It’s easy to make a square cover that won’t fit through a round hole.)

Both of my parents died of heart disease (my father had four major heart attacks; my mother’s first came at 49) and three of my nine siblings also have the disease. Fourteen years ago, at age 50, I began experiencing chest discomfort. My doctor chalked it up to acid reflux. One night in bed, the discomfort turned to pain, accompanied by the sensation of something heavy sitting on my chest. An ambulance took me to the emergency room, where I was diagnosed with a heart attack. Two weeks later, I underwent a double bypass. Following my bypass, complications required multiple stents. It seemed like every other year, I needed a new stent; I had five in 2011 alone! About a year ago, my husband and I were on our daily three-mile morning walk when I became short of breath and my legs felt rubbery. fter my mom underwent a quadruple bypass at age 37, her doctors recommended that my siblings and I have our cholesterol tested. I was an active high school sophomore who played football and wrestled, but it turned out my cholesterol was 550 mg/dL at just 16 years old [recommended cholesterol levels are 200 or below]. My younger brother and sister had similar readings and we were all immediately put on statins to manage our inherited condition, called hypolipidemia. Fast-forward several years; I continued my active lifestyle and got married. My wife and I bought a pizza shop. Doctors tweaked my drug regimen every now and then, but my cholesterol levels remained normal. A heart attack wasn’t even on my radar. One day, when I was 25, my wife and I were at the restaurant when I suddenly broke out in a cold sweat and chills. Then I threw up. I assumed I had the flu and started to leave, but my wife refused to let me drive. We started Googling my symptoms, and “signs of a heart attack” popped up. By the time we arrived at the ER, my chest was feeling heavy. I stumbled in and said, “I think I’m having a heart attack.” They looked at me like I was crazy—I was a thin, fit, young guy. But when they hooked me up to an EKG, they saw that I was, in fact, in the middle of a massive heart attack. My LAD—sometimes

Within 25 minutes, I had been rushed to a nearby hospital and had two stents put in. My doctors said that while nothing could have prevented my heart attack, being physically active had made my heart strong enough to survive the widowmaker. I recently finished two years of Plavix, an anticlotting medication, and now take a newly FDA-approved drug called a PCSK9 inhibitor, which has slashed my cholesterol to the lowest it has ever been.

hen Chazz Surratt first walked through the doors of East Lincoln High School on a hot summer morning in August 2012, he couldn’t have imagined what the future would hold. Just a few short months later, he was a superstar freshman helping the varsity football team snag a North Carolina state title. He went on to lead his Charlotte-area school to many more championships—not only in football but in his home state’s favorite sport, basketball. By the time Surratt finished his prep career, the quarterback would shatter state records—total offensive yards responsible for (16,593) and total touchdowns responsible for (229)—and pick up multiple state player of the year honors. He finished his senior season with 3,546 passing yards and 51 TDs. He also rushed for 1,345 yards and 15 TDs—and East Lincoln was 56-6 in his four years. Today he joins high school greats including Emmitt Smith and Herschel Walker as a Parade All-America Player of the Year.

TALENT + HUMILITY

NFL Hall of Famer Michael Strahan, former New York Giants defensive end, chose the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Surratt—who is committed to play for the University of North Carolina this year—from a list of finalists compiled by Parade editors, who scour the nation each year to identify the top high school prospects. Wide receiver Derrion Grim of California, running back Trevor Speights of Texas and quarterback Jack Abraham of Mississippi were also on the Football legend Michael Strahan short list. was Parade’s All-America judge. “Everybody was so talented,” Strahan told Parade. “With Surratt, you can tell he’s a great athlete and also a leader.” Along with impressive sports stats, Surratt has a 4.5 grade point average and a reputation as a polite, humble young man who appreciates the opportunities he’s given.

Do you or a loved one STRUGGLE on the stairs? We have the AFFORDABLE solution!

“Parade All-America is a huge deal to me and my family,” says Surratt, who is one of 10 children. “I’m honored.” “Do you know this kid babysits my grandchildren?” East Lincoln head coach Mike Byus told Parade. “I mean, how many boys his age would do that? He’s great with kids and they like him too. And he’s polite. Chazz will ‘yes sir’ and ‘no sir’ you to death.”

*College selections are subject to change. HOW WE PICKED THE TEAM: In selecting the All-America Team, Parade contributor Brian McLaughlin—a national senior writer covering college football and recruiting for HERO Sports out of Seattle—considered all-state teams, state player of the year honors and statistics and his own observations. On offense, he looked for players who had outstanding senior seasons while also exhibiting Division I potential. When it came to defensive players, McLaughlin looked for elite playmakers—top athletes who could change games. Parade keeps the team size at 53 to 55. NFL Hall of Famer Michael Strahan helped Parade select the Player of the Year. NOTE: College choices listed are updated as of Jan. 20.

A BRIGHT FUTURE

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill—which went 11-3 this year—saw something special in Chazz Surratt early on. (Tar Heels coaches couldn’t talk about Surratt until after national signing day, which occurred after Parade’s press date.) “They love my versatility, that I can run and pass, and they say I’ll be perfect in their offense, which is up-tempo and works better when the quarterback can run,” Surratt said of conversations with UNC head coach Larry Fedora and his staff. “But the thing they talk about most is knowing I’m going to be where I’m supposed to be, doing what I’m supposed to do,” Surratt says. Surratt flirted with the idea of enrolling at UNC in January—something many quarterbacks and other athletes do so they can get acclimated to college life and also participate in spring drills. But a left elbow injury might be healed up in time for him to play high school basketChazz Surratt finished his senior ball for the last time with season with 3,546 passing yards his brother, junior Sage Surand 51 TDs. He also rushed for 1,345 ratt—and he couldn’t pass yards and 15 TDs—and East Lincoln up that chance. The two are was 56-6 in his four years. very tight, plus the older Surratt has hopes he can help get East Lincoln a state championship in hoops. (They were runners-up last year.) High school coach Byus feels Surratt will thrive at the next level, mostly because he won’t trip himself up. “He has all the intangibles. You have so many kids who have unbelievable talent but not the work ethic to go with it. Then you have the kids who overachieve because of their will and work ethic, and they reach that next level because of that. That’s Chazz Surratt.” FEBRUARY 7, 2016 | 17

Reilly’s New Orleans (Louisiana State University Press), in which food historian Cynthia LeJeune Nobles re-creates the cuisine of Reilly's 1960s Crescent City in a delicious homage to one of the quirkiest characters in American literature. Round out the menu with a daiquiri and shortcut king cake.

Your medical alert device shouldn’t keep you homebound. Creole Seasoning

M

ost supermarkets carry Cajun- or Creole-style seasoning (try Zatarain’s), but making your own lets you control the salt.

Combine 2 Tbsp salt, 1 Tbsp ground black pepper, 1 Tbsp paprika, 1½ tsp dried oregano, 1½ tsp dried basil, 1½ tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder, ½ tsp cayenne pepper and ¼ tsp ground thyme. Store in an airtight container. Makes about ½³ cup.

SHRIMP TIP

While most medical alert devices only work inside your home, or require a separate unit or landline, the GreatCall® Splash device works wherever you need it. Powered by the nation’s most dependable wireless network, you can take the Splash with you everywhere you go. And, with its waterproof design, you can even take it with you in the shower. In any emergency, just press the button to speak immediately with a 5Star ® Medical Alert Agent, 24/7. The Agent will confirm your location using patented GPS technology, evaluate your situation and get you the help you need. At only $1999 a month, 5Star Service on the Splash can save you up to 50% in monthly service fees. That’s a total savings of $200 per year compared to other medical alert services, making it the most affordable on the market. Service as low as

Seniors Find Help for Frequent Bruising You’ve probably noticed that, as you age, your skin has suffered in a number of ways. One of the most obvious is more frequent bruising that takes longer to heal than when you were younger. It’s a painful, unattractive and sometimes embarrassing fact, but it’s something that most older adults have to deal with – often by covering bruises up. As a natural process of aging, your skin begins to thin. The supple, protective layer of fat under your skin starts to deplete. This layer helps act as a cushion when you’re younger, keeping blood vessels from breaking when you get bumped. When aging skin has less of this cushion, bruising happens more easily and frequently, even if you don’t remember any impact in the frst place. Another part of aging is the common need to take more medications. Many types of medication, both oral and topical, can turn bruising into a bigger problem. Many common prescription and over-the-counter drugs have a blood-thinning or anticoagulant effect. Even common supplements like fsh oil can have a similar impact.1 Bleeding under the skin from broken capillaries may take longer to stop, making bruises bigger and darker than they would have been otherwise. Medications that contain corticosteroids can cause the skin to thin with frequent use, whether taken orally or topically, making it easier for bruising to occur. Sun damage can have a similar effect, with UVA rays causing a breakdown in elastin and collagen, leading to more easily damaged and bruised skin.2 Fortify Against Damaged, Bruised Skin Skin changes that result in easy bruising may seem like something you’ll just have to cope with, but there are products made to address bruising as you age. Paying special attention to your sun care regimen and the 1

hink you don’t have time to make the traditional cake that contains a small plastic baby or trinket? Think again. Start with refrigerated cinnamon rolls and you can have these sweets ready in 30 minutes. —Cathy Pollack, noblepig.com

Preheat oven to 375ºF. In a bowl, pour ¾ cup hot apple cider over ¾ cup golden raisins to plump. Let sit 5 minutes. Drain. Unroll 2 (17.5 oz) cans of jumbo cinnamon rolls with icing packet. Place two strips next to each other, pinching seams to create one wide strip. Sprinkle bottom half with raisins and ¾ cup chopped pecans. (Add a small plastic baby or other trinket, if you wish.) Fold over and press to seal. Twist dough into a circle. Seal ends. Repeat with remaining rolls. Bake a few inches apart on a greased baking sheet for 17–20 minutes. Remove from oven and ice while still warm. Sprinkle with gold, green and purple sprinkles. Makes 5.

A Q&A on Life After the NFL Brett Favre set a lot of records during his legendary 20-year career. In addition to being the only “Grandfather” actively playing in the NFL at the age of 40, he remains the undisputed king of being sacked.1 Holding the #1 position is nothing to envy; if it could break, sprain, or cause pain, Favre’s body exper experienced it. Today, Favre maintains an active lifestyle and is in better shape than ever. He serves as a brand ambassador for Copper Fit, the copperinfused compression garments that help reduce muscle and joint pain.

A: It’s more important now than when I played. I took a lot of things for granted. We all do when we’re young. As you get older, you get up a little slower…aches and pains seem to be more common…sometimes for no apparent reason. Sure, I’ve got more reason than most, but I can be brushing my teeth and some pain hits and I think ‘

A: No question that life in the NFL was tough, but I think I’m in better shape today than when I played. I’m smarter about what I eat and how I train. By no means am I in football shape. I don’t have the trainers and physical therapists like I used to. For today’s aches and pains, and I have my fair share of them, I use Copper Fit.
