He played God in Bruce Almighty, and now the Academy Award winner, 78, explores the mysteries of the divine as host (and producer) of the National Geographic Channel series The Story of God, premiering tonight. Why do you think people believe in a higher power? If you go back far enough—let’s say to the beginning of human curiosity—we began to wonder why the top of a mountain would blow off or why all of a sudden it wouldn’t stop raining or why the earth shook. Those were unknowable, unanswerable questions. And the answer for what you don’t know is God, the great unknown. One episode covers miracles. Like what? We interviewed Alcides Moreno, a window washer who had fallen 47 stories to the ground. He and his brother, who died, were on a scaffold when the cabling broke. The aluminum platform sailed down, like a leaf or a piece of paper. The guy broke almost every bone in his body—but lived. What do you believe? My personal belief is in life, at least on this planet. Life everlasting, for the simple reason that life is so self-sustaining. You die, but you’re not useless. You die and your body is put to use. Everything that feeds, feeds on something that’s dead. Did you find that no matter where you went people were more or less the same regardless of what they believed? Oh, yes, yes, yes. We came away from this project with the feeling that we’re much more the same than we are different.

A: While Steinfeld, 19, who released her debut EP in November, says music has always been a passion, she certainly hasn’t given up on acting. s we make our way through our 40s, 50s and 60s-plus, a host of agerelated factors conspire against our waistlines, causing us to gain a pound or more per year. Among them: less physical activity, hormonal fluctuations and a pokey metabolism caused by a natural decrease in muscle mass. Is it any wonder that 80 percent of the respondents in the 2016 Parade/ Cleveland Clinic Weight-Loss Survey say that they are trying to lose weight now or have tried in the past year? Nearly 40 percent want to lose 10 to 30 pounds. “As we age, it is even more important to keep your weight in check,” says Leslie Cho, M.D., section head of preventive cardiology at Cleveland Clinic. A healthy weight guards against many chronic conditions. “The key to success is making healthy diet and exercise part of your lifestyle.” Here’s how.

1. Fruits and veggies are as close to a magic pill as it gets. Eating healthfully

was a challenge for survey respondents (48 percent say it’s harder than exercising), but there is a fairly simple fix. A Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics study found that women who increased their fruit and veggie consumption by two servings a day weighed three pounds less after four years compared to women who kept their produce intake the same. The same trick should work for men too, says study author Bethany Barone Gibbs, Ph.D., of the

University of Pittsburgh Department of Health and Physical Activity: “It’s a small change that can deliver a better longterm result, because it’s not as challenging as, say, giving up French fries forever.”

2. Make sure you wash that produce. Pesticides

are considered obesogens, meaning they may predispose people to weight gain. The produce most likely to be coated in pesticides? Apples, peaches, nectarines, strawberries and grapes, along with celery, spinach, bell peppers, cucumbers, cherry toma-

toes, imported snap peas and potatoes. Be sure to scrub these products well, or purchase organic versions to minimize exposure. Other obesogens to avoid: the chemical BPA, found in many plastics and in cash register receipts, and cigarette smoke (firstor secondhand).

3. Hit the weights. After

He points out that more and more trainers these days are in their 50s and 60s themselves. The key is lifting heavy enough weights that you can only complete six to eight reps. Doing so, he says, causes women to produce growth hormone and men to make testosterone, both of which “help burn fat, build lean muscle and give you a more youthful appearance.”

4. Catch more ZZZs.

Logging enough sleep not only keeps you alert, it may keep you thin—a fact that 46 percent of survey respondents got right. A 2015 University of California, Berkeley, study found that night owls are more likely to gain weight and have higher BMIs than their peers who turn in early. That’s because when you deprive your body of sleep, levels

New stars bring the Disney classic The Jungle Book roaring back to life. BY LAMBETH HOCHWALD

he original 1967 Disney animated musical is a classic, with generations of fans whistling its tunes (“The Bare Necessities” for one) and ever drawn to the story of Mowgli, the Rudyard Kipling–created character raised by wolves in the jungle. That’s why ushering The Jungle Book back onto the big screen wasn’t a task director Jon Favreau took lightly. “The film came out a year after I was born, and it must have been an early influence on me,” says Favreau, known for directing Marvel’s Iron Man and Iron Man 2. Disney produced a live-action Jungle Book in 1994, but it’s the 1967 film that Favreau considers to be the jumping-off point for his remake, an action-packed live-action/computer-animated hybrid. Attracting a modern audience to the film was at the forefront of Favreau’s mind. “Audiences have become very sophisticated over the decades,” he says. “The film has more thrills and more of a sense of danger than the original. At the same time, it’s a PG-rated Disney film, so kids will love it too.” Casting Mowgli was one of the film’s challenges, Favreau says. “When a film has one live-action character surrounded by special-effect wild animals, you’re going to watch that actor for a long time,” says the director. “So it was important that I found somebody that audiences would enjoy spending that much time with.” Neel Sethi, a 12-year-old who makes his film debut in the movie opening April 15, was that actor. THE BRAVE BOY 2016 Plucked from thousands of kids who auditioned for the role of the boy who was separated from his parents after a tiger attack in the jungle and raised by wolves, New York native Neel Sethi, now 12, relocated to Los Angeles to shoot the film last summer. The special effects presented a quick learning curve. “At first, I didn’t know the science behind everything and how it all worked, but now I do,” he says. “There was a lot of makeup—that part took an hour and a half a day!” 1967 Born in 1955, Bruce Reitherman voiced the role of Mowgli in addition to that of Christopher Robin in The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The son of a Disney animator, he’s recently worked as a cinematographer and producer.

2016 Drawn to the python’s charm and her ability to hypnotize Mowgli, Scarlett Johansson voiced Kaa while eight months pregnant with her daughter, Rose. “Kaa is all-knowing and slippery,” says the star of The Avengers, Lost in Translation and Her. Johansson also sings the song “Trust in Me” in the film. “It’s a strange melody,” she says. “We wanted it to be a lullaby, but it has a very mysterious sound.” The actress, who started acting at age 8, says she relates to Sethi. “When I was younger, I wish I had the camaraderie with a director that Neel has with Jon,” she says. “I think that really helped Neel.” One day, Johansson, who is currently shooting Ghost in the Shell in New Zealand, hopes her now-18-month-old daughter can see the movie. “I’ll have to tell her, ‘Yes, your mom’s a snake.’ ”

2016 “I love the fact that I can be part of the remake of something that’s already great,” says Idris Elba, best known for his work on TV’s Luther and for winning 2016 Screen Actors Guild and Independent Spirit trophies for his role in the film Beasts of No Nation. Elba wanted his Shere Khan to have a deep, menacing voice that reflects his hatred of man. “Man has destroyed his home and hunted him, which has made him a bitter, angry protector of his space,” he says. Giving the character a British accent was a deliberate decision too. “That gave the character a sort of regalness.” Elba also tapped into how he felt when he once visited the jungle in Ghana. “The jungle is a scary place,” he says. “At night, it’s super dark—you don’t know where you are. It’s not easy to be a human in the jungle.” 1967 Known for his upper-class

English accent and bass voice, British film and TV star George Sanders was the earlier voice of Shere Khan. The actor, singer and music composer also starred in Rebecca and All About Eve and played Mr. Freeze in a two-part episode of TV’s Batman. He died in 1972.
