Right now Owatonna truly exemplifies the tag line “The City of Friendliness and Beautiful Parks”… these near perfect temperatures get neighbors and community members outside to exercise, play and interact with each other. Youth Scholarship Fund This fund helps support programs for all youth in Steele County and Adult Therapeutic Recreation Programs. Forms are available at the Park and Recreation Office. Participants must pay 25% of program fees, any late fees, and must show verification of one of the qualifications.

Directory DataThe directory data may be released by Parks and

Recreation includes, but is not limited to, name, participation in activities, awards received and images including candid photos and videos of participants in class, activities or sport settings. You may decline authorization by contacting the Parks & Recreation Office.

Youth with Disabilities Youth with disabilities or health concerns are encouraged to participate in any youth program. Adaptive equipment, program modifications and other accommodations to assist the child will allow them to participate with equal advantage. Coaches and staff receive pertinent information regarding the child’s needs prior to their first meeting.

Uniforms for youth activities Participants may keep T-shirts donated by business sponsors for youth baseball & softball, volleyball, squirt and youth basketball. All other uniforms and equipment must be returned to coaches at the end of the season.

Refund/Cancellation Policy The entire policy can be found on the Parks and Recreation website. •

A request for a refund is accepted when submitted prior to the start of the activity. A $10 cancellation fee will be assessed, remainder of the fee is refunded.

If a class or activity was cancelled by Park & Recreation, fee is refunded on a pro-rated basis (except Brooktree).

Annual memberships – if requested within 90 days of the start in case of illness, death, injury or relocation from Owatonna, 50% of the purchase price is refundable.

Seasonal memberships (golf), no refund after July 1st.

Youth & Adult Boot Hockey Tournament Time: ALL DAY

The tournament will be held at the Morehouse Park Outdoor Rinks. Both youth and adult tournaments will be double elimination 5 vs 5 tournaments. The two divisions are: 15 & Under (Youth Bracket) and 16 & Over (Adult Saturday, October 31 – 2:00 – 4:00pm Bracket). Teams are eligible to have up to 7 players per team and all games Mineral Springs Park will be 30 minutes long. Prizes will be given to the 1st-3rd place teams Ghosts and Goblins of all ages grab your trick or treat bags and head out in each bracket. Participants can download the registration and roster to Mineral Springs Park for our 2nd Annual Trick or Treat Trail! We’ve got form from our website. Tell your friends and co-workers before it is too a “New and Improved” trail planned this year! This year’s event will run late! Registration deadline is Wednesday, January 27. Tournament Entry from the trail starting at Brooktree Golf Course parking lot through Mineral Fee: FREE for Youth Teams or $50 per team for Adult Teams Springs Park (park at either location). Visit local businesses along the trail for treats, games, a photo shoot, and crafts. Polar Plunge: January 30, 2016 Polar Plunge 2015 was the first Polar Plunge event to take place in Owatonna. Polar Plunge 2016 will return Saturday, January 30, to Lake Kohlmier to make an even bigger splash! This frosty fundraiser for MN Special Olympics brings profits in to fund its programs and athletes around the state. In 2016, we’ll turn up the fun with additional outdoor activities and concession will be available to warm up the crown and raise funds for Therapeutic Recreation. Look for more details about the plunge and next year’s added fun in the upcoming months.

Owatonna Winter Weekend Out: NEW! February 5 - 7 Owatonna Parks and Recreation is organizing the 1st Annual Winter Weekend Out! We have a fun-filled weekend planned, take a look at the events listed below. Friday, February 5 activities include: (No school Day K-6!) Sledding and Movie at West Hills

Family Ice Fishing at Lake Kohlmier Time: 1:30 – 3:30pm Join us on Lake Kohlmier for an afternoon of ice fishing. Some equipment and bait will be provided and holes will be drilled for fishing. Come and learn a few new techniques at the educational stations, there will be giveaways for kids that visit each station. Prizes for kids 15 & Under who catch the top 3 longest fish. This is a FREE event for everyone to attend. Look for more information to come.

Volunteer Coaches Needed- Youth Basketball

Learn to Skate Hockey

The Parks and Recreation Department uses volunteer coaches for many youth programs. Volunteer coaches play an important role in the youth sports experience. Volunteers are trained in our philosophy of youth sports, first aid, concussions and how to teach skills for their sport. All volunteers must complete a background check each year. Coaches meeting for 3rd-6th grade basketball will be October 26. Coaches meeting for Tikes/Squirt Basketball will be in early December. A classroom and on-court clinic for all basketball coaches with OHS Boys and Girls Varsity staff will be 6-7:30 pm for Girls coaches and 6:30-8 pm for Boys coaches on Tuesday November 10 at Willow Creek School.

Join us for a fun-filled winter while learning to skate and developing hockey skating skills. The Learn to Skate Level One-Earn Your Stick take to the ice in 45-minute sessions. Skaters work on their skill progression at their own speed with many volunteers on the ice to help them along. Once a skater passes Level One testing, they progress through levels two - four, before becoming active in Owatonna Youth Hockey Association traveling hockey.

Kindergarten Basketball - Tikes This non-competitive program focuses on developing social skills, sportsmanship, teamwork and motor skills in a safe environment. T-shirt included with fee. Cost: $35; late registration fee $45 (after October 9) Location: Willow Creek

A helmet is required for everyone on the ice. An entire bag of protective equipment is available for rent from the Owatonna Youth Hockey Association rental program for $50 per year. The Future Stars will improve balance, body movement, hand/eye coordination, and skill development through a series of sport-specific games. The Future Stars Camp will be structured and instructional, while incorporating plenty of fun games and playfulness. We will focus on a different sport each week and teach various skills each class, will also teach children the importance of team work and having fun. Activities include floor hockey, soccer, track and field, and t-ball. Limited to 12 participants per session. Registration begins December 1. Yoga is a series of postures and stretches in combination with breathing to develop flexibility and relaxation. Proper alignment of the body will bring balance, strength, and calmness to the participant.

Owatonna Parks and Recreation will be organizing a Youth & Adult Boot Cost: 12 Class Punch card: $60.00 members/$72 non-members Hockey Tournament on Sunday, February 8. The tournament will be held at the Morehouse Park Outdoor Rinks. Both the youth and adult tournaments 6 Class Punch card: $33 members/$39 non-members will be double elimination 5 vs 5 tournaments. The Dog Park at Lake Chase Park is now open! Teen Club This activity group is designed for teens ages 14-22 who have developmental disabilities and would benefit from social interaction and a place to go to meet friends. Activities include structured crafts, games, local trips, tours, and attending OHS events as a group. •

Night Club This social group is designed for adults 22 years and older, who have developmental disabilities and mental health issues. This group is an extension of Teen Club and functions similarly. Activities are more age appropriate for adults, as we encourage the independent pursuit of leisure interest whenever possible. Night Club is a place to establish and cultivate friendships through recreation. • •

While keeping involved in recreation activities and pursuing new friendships, they also learn to organize using a personal planner. Our goals are to explore personal leisure interests and community resources; develop an understanding of self-advocacy and personal independence, and learn the rewards that come from volunteering. We encourage members to attend without staff, if possible. This group serves as a transition program between Teen Club and Night Club, and members will learn the importance of choosing and planning leisure options. •

Celebrity Chefs Cooking Class

NEW!

If you love to cook, want to learn some new recipes, or just love to eat, this TR cooking class is for you. Instructors for this cooking series will be local faces, familiar to our adult TR members, and people in our community you’d like to know more about. This interactive class will include a demonstration of preparing simple recipes, “hands on” involvement of the participants and of course, sampling the finished product. With each session, participants will receive the recipe to try at home, a chance to ask questions of our guest presenters, and a chance to win a special kitchen give away. The fee for six cooking sessions is $40. It meets Saturdays, 9-11 am, January 9-February 20 (excluding Jan 30). The class limit is 12, and the deadline to register is Dec 28th. Kid’s Leisure Swim This class is designed for ages 6-16 who have disabilities. The instructor is Tim Schiltz, Special Olympics Aquatics Coach. He is experienced in making adaptations for the swimmer with special needs. Our staff will conduct a leisure swim session using games and water activities to promote physical exercise, socialization, and independence in the water. Those using a wheelchair may use our pool lift for transfer in and out of the water. Anyone whose ability restricts them from using the locker rooms independently may use the bathroom and changing area located directly off the pool. An accessible entrance is available. If your child needs further 1:1 assistance, we ask you to provide a volunteer. When registering, please complete a swimmer profile, so that our staff knows your child’s specific needs. Polar Plunge 2015 was the first Polar Plunge event to take place in Owatonna. Polar Plunge 2016 will return Saturday, January 30, to Lake Kohlmier to make an even bigger splash! This frosty fundraiser for MN Special Olympics brings profits in to fund its programs and athletes around the state. In 2016, we’ll turn up the fun with additional outdoor activities and concessions will be available to warm up the crowd and raise funds for Therapeutic Recreation. Owatonna Pickleball Association along with Park and Recreation will be hosting its 3rd Annual Fall Pickleball Tournament. Sports Skills The tournament will be NEW!
