Five
Tenets
Of Dining The Five Tenets of Washington University Dining Services can be used to describe who we are, what we stand for, and how we contribute to the WashU Campus Community.
• Freedom to Practice/Develop/Explore one’s identity • Dining as Community-Building • Access to Quality Food • Availability at Reasonable Cost • Responsive Engagement
3
Welcome, As we transition through the COVID-19 crisis, the health and safety of our students, our team and an award winning dining experience remains a top priority. As universities across the nation begin to open and provide essential dining needs and opportunities, we will continue to create dining to serve your needs. Even during this difficult time, we believe our Five Tenets of Dining remain a foundation to offer strength in uncharted territory: • Freedom to Practice/Develop/Explore • Dining as Community-Building • Access to Quality Food • Availability at a Reasonable Cost • Responsive Engagement As a commitment to our students we have designed menus with a strong emphasis on authenticity, variety and a focus on cultural awareness and flavors. We know physical distance is a new standard so with invested intentionality to create community, we restructured dining service options across campus, added mobile ordering and adjusted seating arrangements to allow for safe connecting with the WashU community. We move forward and when it comes to taste and experience our Chefs have worked diligently over these last few months to create menus that enhance the grab & go environment while delivering exceptional quality and access at a reasonable price. “We think you will be pleasantly surprised at all the details we have taken into consideration as you began to explore high quality food, served safely at Washington University.” We know Washington University Dining Services has a reputation of exceptional service and taste and we mean to continue this in our offerings for fall 2020. This has always been so and will always be our commitment to you. We follow COVID-19 regulations and guidance and structure our dining operations with the health and safety of our customers and associates in mind. Your dining satisfaction will always be a key measure of our success, and we understand that these changes represent a different way of dining at WU. We appreciate your cooperation, your patience and your understanding during this time, as we continue to meet your dining needs, stay true to our commitments for our students’ academic success and offer the best dining experience. On behalf of the entire Wash U family, we thank you for dining with us. Stay safe and stay healthy, Greg Minner Executive Director of Dining & Business Operations

Questions? We have answers! How do the WashU meal plans work?
Meal Plans at WashU are different than most universities. Our meal plans are 100% declining balance meal points. All of our dining centers on campus are al-a-carte so you are only paying for the food you eat. All of our dining centers display the price for each item so you know exactly how much you will be paying for each meal.
How do I access my meal plan?
Your meal plan is loaded onto your student ID card so you only need to carry one card with you on campus. This card will give you access to buildings, your meal plan as well as your Bear Bucks account.
How many meals per week will I be able to eat with my plan?
A declining balance meal plan does not provide a set number of meals per week. Instead, you receive a certain amount of meal points at the beginning of the semester to spend. The number of meals this will get you depends a lot on your specific eating habits and the type of food you like to eat. Larger meal plans will provide you with more meal points to start the semester. Our Silver Meal Plan is our most common plan and is designed to provide the average student with approx. 10-12 meals per week on campus. Students who are heavy eaters or like to buy a lot of snacks or coffees may want to consider purchasing a larger meal plan.
How do I know which meal plan I should buy?
The best meal plan for you will depend on your eating habits and how many meals you plan to eat on campus. Students who eat a lot of late night snacks or like to purchase specialty coffees will use their meal points faster. If you run out of meals points you can always add Bear Bucks to use on campus. If you end up with too many meal points at the end of the fall semester, you can chose a smaller dining plan for the spring semester and your points will carry over.
7
Where and when can I use my meal points?
You can use your meal points at any location on campus operated by WashU Dining Services. There is no restriction on when, where and how many points you can use at one time.
What do I do if I run out of meal points?
If you run out of meal points WashU has Bear Bucks available that you can load to your student account at any time. Bear Bucks can be used in the dining halls just like meal points. Our meal plans are designed to be as flexible as you are so you can add Bear Bucks in small increments to ensure you enough.
How do I know how many points I have left?
You can check your meal point balance at any time by logging into WebSTAC. You can also request a receipt any time you make a purchase and your balance will be displayed on your receipt.
Are there any restrictions on where I can eat?
There are some dining locations on campus that are not operated by WashU Dining Services and do not accept meal points. Starbucks and Bauer CafĂŠ are not operated by WashU Dining and do not accept meal points.
Can I use my meal points off-campus?
No. Meal Points are designed to be only be used on campus in locations operated by WashU Dining Services. Many local businesses have an agreement with WashU to accept Bear Bucks as a method of payment.

Meeting Your Nutrition Needs Our menus are designed with you in mind. We can work with you individually to find allergy-friendly, safe menu items as well as vegan & vegetarian, Halal & Kosher meals that would best meet your individual needs.
Food Allergies & Intolerances Allergies & intolerances can be accommodated across campus in all of our dining facilities. At any time, you can work with a location-specific Executive Chef or Operations Manager to identify what menu items would be safe and enjoyable for you to meet your food allergies and/ or intolerances. We also have Top 8 allergy friendly menus on Grubhub. Items on this menu are prepared in a separate area of the kitchen to prevent cross contact. You can also find our NEW Bear's Top 8 Friendly program implemented at the comfort stations of both the DUC (for lunch) & Bear's Den (for dinner). Vegetarian & Vegan We have vegetarian and vegan options available throughout campus, including our dining halls, restaurant, and cafes. In fact, you can find vegetarian or vegan options at every station at the Bear's Den, DUC, and Village. Kosher We have Kosher meals available in all of our grab & go coolers as well as a designated Kosher station (L'Chaim) in the Bear's Den for lunch and dinner. We also partner with a local deli as well as Hillel & Chabad for weekend meal needs. Halal Halal meats are available upon request in each dining hall. We have prepackaged grab & go items in our markets that are marked with the Halal icon below. You can also find Halal meals at the WU Fusion station in Bear's Den for both lunch & dinner. The DUC also offers Halal chicken dishes on the comfort menu and newly converted comfort station at the Bear's Den is Top 8 allergy friendly and offering Halal meals on Tuesday, Saturday, and Wednesday. Continue to look throughout the semester as we continue to grow Halal offerings throughout campus. Look out for these indicators in all dining halls on all our menu items whether it's in a dining hall, on the website, or Grubhub menu! these icons indicate that a menu item contains the following allergies
dairy/milk
egg
wheat/ gluten
soy
shellfish
fish
peanuts/ treenuts
indicates that a menu item can meet your personal, cultural, or religious observances and needs indicates an item may contain any of the allergens listed above indicates the item is nutritional-balanced and represents an item from our Bear Balance program.

Bear Balance The Bear Balance program is designed to highlight the quality, availability, and access of nutrient rich foods across campus. Bear Balance focuses on the overall prevention of chronic disease and promotes evidence-based nutrition practices without sacrificing quality, flavor, and recipe integrity. The main goal behind Bear Balance is that each dish has to be equally nutritious AND delicious with a focus on nutrients that provide fullness & satisfaction as well as sustained energy throughout the day. Like lean proteins, heart-healthy fats, whole grains, and nutrients & antioxidants from vegetables and fruits! If you're looking for filling & satisfying, heart-healthy, diabetes-friendly, & overall nutritious yet delicious food, then look for the Bear Balance icon on menus across campus!

Additionally, these dishes are prepared in separate areas of the kitchen in order to prevent cross contact. Starting this fall, every day, you can find Bear's Top 8 Friendly at: • DUC comfort station for lunch • Bear's Den comfort station for dinner • Grubhub's mobile menu for breakfast, lunch & dinner For questions, concerns, or general inquiry about the program and where it can be found, email diningservices@wustl.edu!

Farm to Fork We help invest in the health of our community and the future of our food supply by purchasing seasonal and regional ingredients from local, St. Louis area based farmers, artisans, and producers, whenever possible. We define “local” as products that come from within 150 miles of our campus. We do this because food grown locally: • is fresher, better tasting and can have great nutritional value • supports family farmers and keeps money invested in the community • preserves bio-diversity • protects open space

During a typical week, we purchase 9,372 pounds of local produce, protein and dairy to fuel the campus. That’s over 4 tons of tomatoes, squash, melons, beans, apples, greens, bacon, pork, yogurt and more! We’re proud to support our local partners, farmers and alumni-founded businesses.
Sustainability WUSTL Dining Services has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for excellence in food waste recovery efforts and won a NACUFS Sustainability Gold Award for Excellence in Waste Management. Our commitment to sustainability is rooted in preparing flavorful food that nourishes the Washington University community, replenishes our shared natural resources for future generations and is produced through practices that support farmers. Here are a few of the ways we practice sustainability!
Taking the Guess Work out of Waste!
Pledge to Green Monday!
Reducing, reusing and recycling waste is an essential component of an institutional sustainability effort. It is often one of the first ways that new students or guests see the university’s commitments manifested in action. Recycling programs rely on an informed community to participate in waste avoidance and properly managing personal waste, whether they are in one of our dining spaces, an office setting, classroom or residential living space.
Commit to Green Monday to help save water and energy by eating vegetarian at least once a week. We offer a delicious variety of plant-based options every day. Start your week off right like these students who have taken the pledge! You can take the pledge at sustainability.wustl.edu.
