ALAN CARR

SPOT LIGHT ON

Alan Carr will be live on stage at Watford Colosseum on Friday 8 May. The last few remaining tickets are available online at watfordcolosseum.co.uk In the middle of my interview with Alan Carr, a very loud police siren starts wailing in the background. Quick as a flash, the comedian jokes that, “I’m so in demand, even the police want me,” before adding with a laugh: “Or maybe they’ve seen my act and want to arrest me!” This is typical of the quick-witted humour of one of the finest comics currently at work in this country. And the good news is, Alan is about to underline just how brilliant he is by embarking on his first major stand-up tour for three years – including a performance at Watford Colosseum. Alan, previously responsible for such successful live shows as Tooth Fairy and Spexy Beast, is really pleased to be undertaking a tour once again. “I love live comedy,” he beams. “Sometimes the politics of doing the chat show and booking guests can be frustrating. And occasionally you’ll have a dud guest with nothing to say.

“But when it’s just you on stage with a mic in front of lots of people who have come specifically to see you, it’s fantastic. You’re the boss. I get such a buzz on stage. It’s a complete adrenalin rush. When you dream up new material and think, ‘Great, I can add that to the set,’ it’s a wonderful feeling. If it works, a new joke always brings a smile to my face. It’s such a thrill.” Alan, who recently hosted Channel 4’s flagship fundraising show Stand Up To Cancer which went on to raise an amazing £14 million for Cancer Research, has amazingly devoted fans. “They’re always lovely,” he enthuses. The warmth of his fans gives Alan a real glow. “Twitter can be a nasty, spiteful place. It makes you think the British public are awful. But Twitter isn’t real. It encourages a certain type of person. The real British public are lovely. People are really warm – they feel they know me, and they’re always bringing me presents! They bring me lots of knickers and ropey drinks for the globe on my chat show.” Such is his rapport with his fans that Alan has deliberately chosen to perform at more intimate venues on the “Yap, Yap, Yap!” tour. “I could have played arenas and done the tour within a month, but in those big places you can’t talk to the audience. If you mention the jumper of someone in the front row, 11,999 other people say, ‘What’s he on about?’ What Alan loves is that, “When you’re on stage, the audience transports you and you almost go into a trance. These people have paid good money to see you, and you can’t let them down. If they’ve had a crap day, they just want to go out and have a laugh – and it’s your responsibility to deliver. You want to perform for them because they’re so lovely.” Alan proceeds to explain the title of the show. “I called it, Yap, Yap, Yap! because there’s a lot of waffle out there. With blogs and Twitter, everyone has an opinion nowadays. I can’t believe I’ll be waffling on stage for two hours – I’m adding to it. It’s my own fault!” Interview by James Rampton

CLAIRE SWEENEY

SPOT LIGHT ON

Claire Sweeney is starring in Sex In Suburbia on Thursday 16 April. Tickets are available online at watfordcolosseum.co.uk Where did the idea for Sex In Suburbia come from? All the appallingly bad dates my friends and I have ever experienced. We’d tell each other what had happened and get over the horror of the experiences by laughing about them. Then, about two years ago, my close friend Mandy Muden and I started writing them all down in my front room with the notion of turning them into a comedy. At first we weren’t even sure if we were funny! But the play went down a storm with the audiences last year when it first opened in Liverpool. We take them through every emotion and they enjoy themselves so much that they get up to dance in the aisles and sing along to the big musical anthems we’ve included, such as I’m Every Woman, I Want To Break Free and, of course, I Will Survive. What happens in the show? It’s all about the eternal subject of love and romance, and the quest to find Mr Right through a series of mainly unsatisfactory dating experiences. But we’ve tried to take the bad out of the date and make the audience laugh by helping them to see the funny side. In our comedy the host of a late-night radio show is Britain’s leading agony aunt and she takes calls from listeners about their dates from hell – and the occasional one from heaven – and dishes out her advice. In the original show I played a relationship expert, but this time around I play myself – a working mum with a baby. Have you included your own experiences of dating? Yes, all the material comes from me and my friends. I’m the woman who goes on all these dodgy dates looking for love and then reaches a stage in her life when she would like to settle down and become a mum!

Well, you certainly got that, Claire! Yes, I was due to go on tour with the show when I found out I was pregnant. Being a mum is the best thing ever and Jaxon is the love of my life. What kind of baby-related stories are in the show? Funny anecdotes about pregnancy and breastfeeding. I had the most gorgeous pregnancy and loved my growing bump and being able to eat what I wanted. A few weeks after I had Jaxon, people came up to congratulate me on being pregnant. I hadn’t lost baby weight and they thought I was still expecting! I was a bit embarrassed and replied indignantly, ‘Actually my baby’s six weeks old.’ You can’t ping back into shape immediately. Did you think twice about putting your own material in? No, I found it liberating. I’ve changed the names and places but a few of the dates are based on my real dating experiences. I thought they were funny and I’m glad all the women who saw them in the show thought so too. You have to laugh in the face of adversity, don’t you? What are some of the more outlandish dates experienced by friends? Well, one of them found the macho man she was dating wearing a frilly rah-rah dress! There’s another extraordinary tale about a cross-dresser. It’s the true story of a woman married to an uncommunicative, unpleasant man who suddenly discovers that he likes to wear women’s clothes. After the initial shock, she becomes the best of friends with his alter ego – who’s softer, warm and kind – and it saves their marriage. Do women in the audience volunteer their own stories? Oh gosh yes! We have a slot in the show where they can share their dating nightmares. Instead of ‘Blind Date’ we call it ‘Bad Date.’

©2007 Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity (©2008 Theatres for Theatres) Registered charity no. 23582

So far the generosity of audiences and staff has raised over £570,000 for the charity, but we have more to raise to help build and equip a suite of new operating theatres at the Hospital which will open in 2017. You can donate using collection tins at Watford Colosseum or online at gosh.org/theatredonation Your support makes a huge difference. Thank you.
