AKIHA AN EYE-OPENING C Intimately nicknamed Akiba, the town that is now known as Akihabara originated in 1870, when a Shinto shrine honoring the fi re-quelling deity Akiba was built to ward off the repeated fi re disasters that had caused a massive amount of damage to the area. Back in the early 20th century, the modernization of Japan was proceeding smoothly; the number of radio users grew from 600,000 in 1925 to 1,600,000 in 1932. But the process was halted by WWII: like many cities and areas in Japan, Akihabara was leveled to the ground by allied bombers. Nevertheless, the fortunes of Akihabara would soon reverse. The area’s conveniently accessible location made it a trading center full of vendors of radio parts and electronic products. Capitalizing on the post-war economic boom, these electronics retailers in Akihabara flourished and earned the area its nickname - the electric town. In the ’50s, the best sellers were the monotone TV, the washing machine, and the refrigerator, collectively known as the holy trinity of home appliances. As technology evolved, more and more convenient products hit the market, such as 28 2 8

color TVs, Walkman, stereo sets, video game consoles, and personal computers. Big electronics chains and tax-free shops boasting an extensive lineup of products mushroomed in Akihabara. The electric town certainly lived up to its name. Since the ’90s, a variety of subcultures have emerged as the new fad in Akihabara. Of course Japan is famous for the animated fi lms of Studio Ghibli, such as Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. In Akihabara, however, the animation boom had more to do with cosplay. The fi rst cosplay cafe in Japan is said to have opened in Akihabara in 1999. A variation called maid cafe appeared in 2001, and has since become one the symbols of Akihabara. Nowadays Akihabara is a unique town where Gundam, AKB 48, anime, video games, and computer electronics stores coexist in a somewhat chaotic but exciting fashion. Now, bring along a copy of WAttention and hit the road to discover the unique charm of Akihabara.

GUNDAM CAFE
AKB 48 CAFE
A mecca for anime fans Gundam is probably the most internationally well-known series of Japan’s robot anime. Unlike other super robots who invariably beat their rivals in a good vs evil setting, the robots (called Mobile Suits) in the Gundam series are not invincible, and each faction in the anime fights for its beliefs and motives; therefore, there’s no clear line separating heroes and villains, just like in the real world. For beginners, the Gundam Cafe in Akihabara is a nice first step into the Gundam world. For hardcore fans, it’s a wonderland!
Experience Japan’s unique idol culture Arguably the most popular Japanese idol girl group now, AKB 48 (AKB means Akihabara) was created with the concept “Idols you can meet everyday.” The group performs at their dedicated theater in Akihabara almost every day, and regularly holds “handshake events,” where fans get a chance to interact briefly with the members. For a quick glimpse of the AKB 48 world, drop by at the official cafe & shop, where you can enjoy delicious meals alongside AKB videos, and check out a whole range of AKB items.

Maid Cafe Experience Diary We felt a bit shy and nervous when we fi rst visited maid cafe, but our hearts were melted by the maids’ caring smiles as soon as we entered the dream-like space.
Welcome home, my master!
A New Way to Experience Japanese Hospitality When it comes to discussing omotenashi, the heart of Japanese hospitality, people tend to associate it with services provided in traditional Japanese hotels and restaurants. However, there is somewhere you can experience the very essence of, omotenashi, which is the Maid Cafe.
Here is what happened:
Three adorable maids greeted us with stunning smiles at the entrance. Thanks to the smiles and heart-warming service, we felt like we had come home.
I am good at decorative drawing.
Watch your step, my lord and lady.
A Dollhouse-like Space
One of the maids named Hitomi led us to our seats and kindly reminded us about the stairs. She always kept herself at a lower position when serving us.
We ordered the most popular menu based on Hitomi’s recommendations. It was enjoyable to watch her make a special drink and hand-drawing latte art.
The lunch plate was written with the message and special drawing we requested. We enjoyed joining the chanting spells with the maids as they infused our food with affection before we ate it.
English Menu is Available
After we were seated, Hitomi started to explain the menu to us. It is easy to understand because every item comes with a picture. An Englishspeaking maid is available upon request.
The interior design looked just like a dollhouse, an adorable and cheerful space for people to relax from the tensions of daily life.
Live dancing and singing were extremely cute and healing even you cannot understand Japanese lyrics. The live concert drove the atmosphere to a very high point of amusement.
Let’s play games!
Live Concert
You can play cards and finger-guessing games with the maids, and the winner will be awarded with a photo shoot with the maids or free points, as it is normally not allowed to take any photo of the interior and or the maids in the cafe.
Hope to see you soon again.
The Maid Cafe is no longer exclusive to Otaku. We met many couples, girls, families, and visitors from overseas gathering in this cheerful place.
Guests can only stay at the cafe for one hour, but we were satisfied with the lunch, drink, games, and live concert within that time. The cheerful farewell made a perfect ending to our stay in the dreamland.

Ramen
Ramen is one of the latest additions to the repertoire of Japanese cuisine. Originally a Chinese import, this simple concept of noodles in soup with toppings was popularized by Chinese restaurants in Japan during the early years of the last century. Since then, it has grown to take pride of place alongside more “traditional” Japanese dishes like sushi, and is now a permanent fixture in the daily diet of the average Japanese person. Restaurants that serve ramen abound in any Japanese city, and you can easily enjoy a decent bowl for less than 1000 yen. Ordering ramen may be slightly tricky because menus are usually entirely in Japanese, but you can get around the language barrier by pointing to the pictures in the menu or plastic models displayed at the entrance. Ramen specialty shops often allow you to “customise” your meal by letting you choose the type of noodles (men), soup (suupu) ikoma.pdf 1 5/17/2012 7:56:52 PM and toppings (gu) that you would like to have, combining them in numerous
Classroom
mouth-watering permutations to suit any palate. For noodles, you can ask for futoi (thick), hosoi (thin), katame (firm), yawarakame (soft) or simply futsuu (standard) ones. Big eaters can request for oomori (large portion). For soup, choose from shouyu (clear soup with soy sauce), miso (soup with fermented soybean paste), shio (clear soup with extra salt) or tonkotsu (soup made from slow cooking of pork bones). Some places even allow you to further specify kotteri (rich) or assari (light) soup. As for toppings, take your pick from chaashuu (pork slice), tamago (egg), negi (green onion), nori (seaweed), menma (pickled bamboo), kikurage (jew’s-ear), goma (sesame), moyashi (beansprouts) and kyabetsu (cabbage). Ordering and making requests in Japanese is straightforward. To order, say “... wo kudasai.” To make a request, use “… de onegai shimasu.” Choosy eaters will do well to remember “…nuki de onegai shimasu” to ask for a specific topping to be excluded; “…wo oome ni shite kudaad_Aegis_WTS.pdf 1 2013/08/02 sai” to have more of something; or “… wo sukuname ni shite kudasai” for less.
