n Tokyo, I would suggest to visit Shibuya for its so many variation of stores, restaurants, etc and Aoyama/Harajuku where there are a lot of fashion shops from high fashion to very local and small, or vintage. In country side, I would suggest Magome, Tsumago villages where tradition and old houses and streets still exist. I used to visit country side personally when I started my business in Japan about 30 years ago, but now I really don’t have enough time to visit apart from Tokyo where I am only allowed to walk around near my office in Aoyama, Harajuku and Shibuya due to my busy schedule. However, I always find some new interesting things and like watching people, how they dress etc. I was lucky to have time to visit Tsumago and Magome for a project with a magazine last year, and I found these villages are so beautiful. It is great to see that they are still there and unchanged, which is rare and

have visited Japan for more than 40 years! I first went there with Serge Gainsbourg for the opening of the film “Cannabis” when I was 7 months pregnant with Charlotte! Since then COUNTLESS other times for song festivals, film festivals, and since “Baby Alone in Babylon,” for concerts not only in Tokyo but all over Japan. When Serge died, I went back for the “Casino de Paris” show, when “L’aquoiboniste” was chosen as the signature song for a TV series and I became number ONE foreign sales singer in Japan for six months, beating Elton John as I said to my mother. This was thanks to an ex-producer for Phonogram who came up with the idea, and to a Frenchman named Francois Dumas who invited Serge and me to sing in Japan. My friend Sachiko Nakanishi then brought me over with “Les Visiteurs du Soir” for the show “Arabesque” in Japan, with “Conversation” and I went back with her about ten times for every subsequent show! I have a LIST of WONDERFUL places, which, with Sachiko’s help, I have made. I took my mother, my daughter Lou, my step-child, and my ex-husband Doillon to a LOVELY spa, Jigokudani. My mother wanted to see snow monkeys ever since she’d seen an American “Life” magazine cover thirty years before! Fantastic baths at night snow monkeys in sulfur pools never to forget, thanks to Duma’s wife who’s Japanese ONLY Japanese know this place, very UNFLAH and authentic.

As the height of the summer approaches, Obon season gets underway. Large and small fireworks, Tanabata festivals, Shoro-nagashi festivals, and numerous folk dance gatherings... crowds in Yukata (casual Kimono) flock to shrines and temples to enjoy summer funfairs. Street stalls offer games like catch the goldfish . Old-fashioned penny candies glimmer magically under the flickering lights of the stalls. Obon is the week when the souls passed away are supposed to come back to spend time with their family or descendants. The festival takes many

Tokyo s summer has become blazingly hot, but it gets cooler and more comfortable in the evenings. From traditional yakata bune , a small cruise boat, and fireworks to lively beer gardens, Tokyo s summer nights are filled with excitements. From mid-July to the end of August, a number of festivals, including bon-odori, brighten up the city every weekend! It is a dancing festival usually held around obon, a Buddhist ceremony to welcome back the spirits of the deceased ancestors. Summer nights are not complete without a glass of cold beer. In addition to Tokyoites favorite, light and refreshing lagers, there are microbrewed Tokyo beers as well! Step out of your air-conditioned room and make a big toast to the warm summer evenings!

This is something you won't be able to see in other parts of the world 世界のどこでもなく、日本でなければ見られないイベント In Japan, there is a very special feeling attached to summer. It s probably because there are long school holidays and kids get to go to lots of festivals and have lots of adventures. Many Tokyoites share childhood memories of visiting their grandparents' house in rural Japan, tasting traditional Japanese dishes and visiting local festivals wearing Yukata (the casual Kimono, that used to be commonly worn as loungewear or pyjamas) . It s the season when people get to really enjoy the evenings. Although it can get very hot during the day, once the sun goes down, the cool evening breeze begins to stir, cooling the skin and bringing a fresh, soothing sensation.

In recent times, the tendency had been to simply shut the window and switch the air conditioner on, but these days, more and more people have returned to the good old-fashioned style, bringing their benches and chairs outside to enjoy beer and chat while the kids munch on watermelon and play with fireworks in the garden. The popular "Beer Gardens (see p. 12-13)" are a reminder of this summer pastime and still hugely popular. Summer is also a special time in terms of Japanese spiritual culture. Depending on the region, during either mid July or mid August, there is a period called Obon (or just Bon ). This is a week dedicated to the memory of the deceased (see p.3) and while being part of the Buddhist

calendar, it is strongly influenced by old Japanese pagan customs. That s why there are many festivals held at temples and shrines at this time of the year. Most of those continue till quite late in the evening, with a Bon dance party. In the old days, these evening festivals were a special chance for the young people to mix and socialize. One of the highlights of the summer festivals in Japan are the firework displays. There are dozens of firework festivals held in Tokyo throughout the summer, and some of them boast more than ten thousands fireworks, gathering crowds of up to a million on a single night. Japanese fireworks are renowned worldwide for their bright colors and

complex designs. If you re in Tokyo during July and August, we highly recommend you try one of the bigger events. This is something you won't be able to see in other parts of the world. These firework displays also originated in religious culture. One of the first public firework displays was held in Eighteenth Century Edo, to comfort the souls of people who died in the great cholera pandemic. Toro Nagashi (see p.9) is also used to remember those that have passed away. Viewing the fireflies is an elegant evening pastime, but at the same time, these faint lights are also said to represent the souls of the dead. If you are lucky enough to be in Tokyo this summer, why not go out in the evening and avoid the heat of the day? As well as all those traditional festivals, there are numerous shopping malls and great restaurants, aquariums and zoos that

stay open till late. There are even 24/7 bookstores in central Tokyo. Luckily, Tokyo is generally very safe to roam around, even after the midnight. From summer festivals and funfairs at shrines and temples to Bon dance parties and big markets hosted by the local councils, there are hundreds of traditional evening events happening in Tokyo. Takigi Noh , or Noh theatre by the bonfire, is regarded as one of the highest art forms in Japan, and is mostly performed during the summer. This special program is promoted by Taito-ku council to open up this art to a bigger audience. Try the connoisseur taste of Japanese high culture.

A picturesque event started a year after the end of World War Ⅱ. Thousands of candlelit lanterns, with the names of loved ones who died this year, are released to the flow of the river by families and friends. This ceremony started soon after the WWⅡ.

The Bon folk dance is originated from a religious/ pagan dance dedicated to the spirits of ancestors and gods, but nowadays it is for people to have fun. Most of the choreography is very simple, so you can just jump in and copy the others. You will be welcomed!

As a gourmet city , Tokyo is widely known for its endless list of delectable restaurants and bars. Yet this concrete megacity is rarely associated with the actual production of the food and drinks these restaurants serve. However, there is in fact a long list of products made right here in Tokyo. Being the political and business capital of a beer-loving country, for example, Tokyo has always played a great role in the production of the country s best beers: Sapporo s renowned Ebisu beer originated near today s JR Ebisu station (hence the name), and Suntory s Premium Molts is brewed at Musashino Beer Factory in western Tokyo. Hidden under these major beers - and Asahi s unforgettable, beer-inspired headquarters - there are more than a few microbreweries across the region, humbly brewing craft beers that you can enjoy locally. If you are interested in history and prefer something more Japan , then you should try Tama 3 no Megumi. This great beer, which comes in over six varieties including pilsner, pale ale and Munchener dark, is brewed at a 150-year-old sake brewery in western Tokyo, Ishikawa Shuzo (which also brews the sake Tamajiman ). Their century-old complex, complete with breweries, restaurants, and even a small museum, is definitely worth the hourlong trip from the city center: the fine historical architecture is preserved and utilized with great care and respect. You can buy the beer on their website, although the best way to enjoy it is to sip it at their popular restaurant in their amazing complex. Make sure to reserve a spot before you go! Finally, if you d like to clink pints of delicious local beer in a romantic setting, try T. Y. Harbor Brewery. One of their restaurants, Waterline, has everything you could want for a date: clean, comfortable and casual, with candles on the table, great service and a great location on the water. Once you sit down, you feel like you could stay forever, with great food and pint after pint of wonderfully brewed ales: pale ale, wheat ale, amber ale and Indian pale ale. hough spaghetti was invented in Italy, Japan invented a style of its consumption – eating spaghetti with a pair of chopsticks. It was 1976, when Yomenya Goemon opened its very first restaurant in Shibuya, Tokyo. Back then, "supagettei" was not as ubiquitous as now

and hence, the restaurant operator, now known as Nippon Restaurant System, came up with an idea of serving the dish with a pair of chopsticks, so that the diners can sense more familiarity when eating – just like eating soba or udon noodle. apanese people are generally considered to be not so religious , when such devotion is measured by monotheistic standards. And yet, from time to time, the Japanese show fervent devotion to seemingly silly things. In recent years, power spots have become a fad, and quiet, sacred lands have become 1 crowded with swarms of people desperate to gain extra energy . This seemingly fickle New Age trend, however, does have a genuine root in Feng Shui and the theory of Qi. Qi is the basis of all the ideas and theories behind Feng Shui, which is essentially a study of the flow of Qi. The earth, the sky and people all possess Qi, and it is often defined as an invisible energy that flows between these three mediums. In this way, Qi resembles what some call a wavelength b e t w e e n people, as love at first sight and other inexplicable attractions are explained as two people sharing similar or harmonizing Qi. According to Feng Shui, when a person is feeling down or sick, the feeling is caused by either bad Qi or a lack of Qi. So, in the olden days, people would make a trip to places with a fountain of good Qi, with the belief that an influx of this good energy would help them recover. Good Qi could also be taken in by eating dried foods, which are believed to be filled with Qi from the sky, and by soaking in hot springs full of Qi from the earth. So where does good Qi flow 3

hen you talk about power spots in Tokyo, the first and supposedly most powerful that comes to mind is the Imperial Palace, right in the middle of the city. The palace, however, is a manmade power spot, given that Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of Tokugawa Shogunate, took the lead in the massive reconstruction of the city according to Feng Shui, to recreate the city in a form more favorable to Qi. One of the great goals of this vast project was to create a spiral of moats around Edo Castle, (the present day Imperial Palace), to

collect all the good Qi. Thanks to his grandiosity, the Shogunate stayed in power and ruled a peaceful country for over 250 years. Internet Access in Tokyo 東京のネット接続事情

Although Japan is known for its technology, internet connectivity for the tourist is still rather limited. These days even most of the budget hotels provide internet connection in each room (please note, LAN cable is still in common use, rather than WIFI). There is a free public WIFI network called FREESPOT (www.freespot.com/users/map_ e.html) made up of a network of independent providers like cafes and shops, but it seems many of its spots require registration via 3G email. so this could be offputting for tourists who don't want to use expensive 3G roaming. Wi2 300（www.wi2.co.jp/ en）offers several services, including 6 hours connection for 350 yen. They have extensive instructions in English so check it out before you go out. Wireless Gate (www.wirelessgate. co.jp) offers even wider services, including one month connection for a fixed 480 yen that includes connecting spots on the Bullet train (only N700 model) and in Underground stations. Unfortunately Wireless Gate doesn't have an English instructions page. FON network (http://maps. fon.com/?lang=en) is quite extensive throughout Tokyo and is recommended.
