“Doyo” refers to the 18 days before the end of a season, and occurs four times a year. Within that period, the natsu no doyo no ushi no hi - which occurs before the beginning of Fall - is a day the Japanese associate with the eating of eel, or unagi. But this tradition is actually not that old. One version of its origin is that Hiraga Gennai, a multi-talented scientist, inventor, author etc. from the Edo era in the 18th century, started this trend.

Apparently this idea for a doyo no ushi no hi came about after an enterprising owner of an unagi restaurant approached Hiraga to help do some publicity for his shop. Hiraga, who was known to have restored a static electricity generator from the West, was interested in electricity and studying electric eels at the time. According to ancient Eastern divination, summer was thought to be related to the “fire” element. And fire is countered by water. In the same way, water is represented by the color black. Hence it was thought that

black objects could counter the element of fire. The word “doyo” in the phrase doyo no ushi means water. So came the belief that on the day of the ushi, black objects are eaten to ward away evil. This was the basis on which eating black eel on a hot summer’s day would help to counter fatigue in the summer. Letter from the Publisher A view of Mt. Fuji never fails to impress, as you can see from our cover photo, which was the winning entrant of WAttention s inaugural photo contest conducted on Google+. Recently, some of our editorial staff visited the Fuji Five Lakes Area for our special feature, A Short Trip from Tokyo . Ever since Mt. Fuji became recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the number of foreign

visitors has evidently increased. Getting to the Fuji Five Lakes Area is just under two hours by train, and around 3 hours by car. At such close proximity to Tokyo, it s a highly recommended trip. Just imagine taking in the view of Mt. Fuji from an outdoor onsen – it s one of the best experiences one can have in Japan!           Publisher Yasuko Suzuki

The beauty of leather products is the way it changes color and character with use over time, becoming a unique item unlike any other. Behind the production of such durable and reliable goods, is the craftsman’s skill, starting from the choice of raw materials, to the tanning, dyeing, cutting and sewing of the hide. Not to mention, the finesse of the technique, but in every step of the production process of each bag, the thought put into the person using the finished product, and effort spent on every last detail, this uncompromising and diligent stance, is what earns a craftsman his calling. The skill in cutting the surface of hide into scale-like pieces one by one, and in the even and fine stiches, results in a quality best conveyed by actually holding such a product in your own hands.

Subculture 101

From Astro Boy to Akihabara – everything you need to know about Subculture in Japan

Uno Tsunehiro Uno Tsunehiro is a Japanese pop culture writer and critic, a regular commentator on Japanese radio and television programs and chief editor of "PLANETS" magazine. He is also an adjust lecturer at Kyoto Seika University and lecturer at Rikkyo University.

It’s not too far off to say that every Japanese grows up on a diet of anime and manga, differing in just a matter of degree – and whether one grows out of it. Indeed, it would be hard to find any Japanese who has not heard of Doraemon, One Piece or Studio Ghibli. With such anime as a common reference for society here, why is it still called a “sub” culture, and how did cutesy characters, spaceships and Godzilla get so mainstream? WAttention spoke with up-andcoming Japanese pop culture critique Uno Tsunehiro, for a brief history of subculture in Japan.

I am Godzilla! Get outta my way!!

Happy otaku with Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Akihabara, the mecca for all things otaku.

Godzilla and Post-War Catharsis Godzilla, the giant radiation-breathing reptile, rampaged onto the scene prior to anime in the early 1950s. It comes under the genre of a special effects production and was a reflection of post-war Japan in its Cold War tensions and atomic age anxieties. “Since direct reference to the war was taboo, Godzilla served to do that,” said Uno, who’s also chief editor of a current affairs magazine “Planets”.

Toy figurine of Evangelion Unit-01.

From Manga to “TV Manga” At around the same time, the “god of manga” Osamu Tezuka started “story manga”, or manga with richer story lines and character development, making manga not just entertainment for children but across all ages as well. In 1966, Tezuka created the first animated TV series of his monthly manga, “Astro Boy” or “Tetsuwan Atom”. Uno says anime was then referred to as “TV Manga”, and due to high production costs, animation was limited to use of still frames and emphasis was placed on the plot instead. “Astro Boy” dealt with very poignant issues, such as death, loss and acceptance – the anime is about a flying robot created to replace the son of a scientist, who died in a car accident, and his adventures and relationships in the human world. Manga’s popularity gained speed, and by the 70’s, manga appeared not just in monthly magazines, but took the form of weekly manga magazines instead.

Anime and Akihabara Boom According to Uno, Tetsuwan Atom was the first anime boom, followed by Space Battleship Yamato in the 70’s and Mobile Suit Gundam in the 80’s, and Evangelion in the 90’s. In a natural evolution, manga progressed from the page to the screen and into real life via merchandising. All sorts of posters, toys and trinkets are made to allow fans to identify themselves by the manga or anime that they have come to love. Plastic models of Battleship Yamato and Gundam characters are still coveted by otakus today in Akihabara. The word “otaku” (literally, “homebody” but referring to hardcore fans of anime/ subculture) was coined in the 1980s - in a derogatory manner. But now, otakus declare their existence with pride, with female otakus arguing that the term isn’t gender specific.

No Longer a “Sub” culture? So why are anime and manga still referred to as a subculture, rather than being part of Japan’s culture? “For the older generation, anime and manga will be deemed to be a subculture. But gradually, there will be nothing to stop anime and manga from being accepted as a main culture. And then, anime and manga won’t be so ‘cool’ anymore,” said Uno.

Ok, So What’s Next? Manga is something almost every Japanese grows up reading.

Toy figure of “Astro Boy” or “Tetsuwan Atom”.

Idols you can meet and shake hands with.

Live Idols is where the next subculture boom lies, Uno predicts. The Live Idols concept started gaining popularity from the year 2000, with the original 48-member idol girl group AKB 48 making its debut in 2005. Unlike mainstream TV idols, these Live Idols perform at a regular venue, gaining a local fan base. The concept behind Live Idols is “idols you can meet” – indeed, handshake sessions are a key part of a Live Idol’s existence, and their handshake count would put most politicians to shame. CD releases come with lottery tickets for a chance to attend a “handshake event” to meet members. So, after quick rundown on the evolution of Japanese subculture, are you ready to unleash you inner otaku yet?

We all played make believe when we were kids, imagining ourselves as a superhero, prince or princess. Cosplay is just that, in a more elaborate form. While cosplay, or costume play, cannot be said to have originated in Japan, the level of development of the industry here has led to the Oxford Dictionary to define cosplay as “The practice of dressing up as a character from a film, book, or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga or anime”. Let’s Talk Subculture Explore the fascinating world of Japan s subcultures with insights from the inside.

What You Oughta’ Know About Otome Road

and was a term slapped on women who drew or read manga portraying two male leads in a romantic relationship, which comes under the genre of “Boys’ Love”, or BL.

Mecca of the FUJOSHI 腐女子

Now, why would any heterosexual woman be interested in two men in love or making love? Understandably the idea would make the general public somewhat squirmish.

In a nutshell: Otome Road is to the Fujoshi what Akihabara is to the Otaku. It’s the Yin to the Yang of Otaku culture (though some may argue that Otaku also includes those of the fairer sex).

But you’ll find that most of the Fujoshi paying pilgrimage at “Otome Road” – a nickname for a 200 meter-odd stretch of road in East Ikebukuro – are just regular romantics who love manga.

First things first, fujo…what?

Why girls love Boys’ Love

If that didn’t make any sense to you, fret not. The term Fujoshi isn’t as wellknown as Otaku, which has elbowed its way into the Oxford dictionary to refer to a person obsessed with a certain (sub) culture, often to the detriment of their social skills.

One unique feature about BL is that it is written and drawn by women, for women. This BL circle is often referred to as “dojinshi” and BL started off as fan fiction of shonen manga, or young boys’ comics, which quite simply either focuses on a sport, or students who are also warriors in a fantasy world.

So why should you care about this breed of beings, the Fujoshi? Because this is a global trend that taps into and reflects the psyche of nearly half of the world’s population. What is Fujoshi?

Female characters hardly appear and the boys are always portrayed as either training, competing or fighting their nemesis.

This literally means “rotten female(s)”

BL explores the fantasy that the male

We are

protagonist’s hatred actually stems from a forbidden love for his nemesis – which is quite a deep hypothesis, psychologically speaking! The BL genre, with its endless spinoffs of mainstream titles playing out alternative scenarios - from the male characters going on an onsen trip to just showing them on a regular day out – fulfils the fantasy of female fans. Men adopting a submissive position There’s also a deeper sociological driver for the existence of BL which gives it a global appeal. BL gives women the chance to see men in a submissive state, being the one to say ‘no!’ or be pleasured, instead of the normal manga when men are the one taking the lead and proving their manhood – even if in real life, they may not do so. And in a male-dominated world – and society like Japan – this twist will give most ladies some pleasure. Nothing rotten about that, is there?

Fujoshi speak up To voice actresses, Kokoro Kanae and Yui Taya who are both in their twenties, BL is just another genre of manga to be enjoyed, with nothing to feel ashamed of. I have male friends who read it too and they aren t gay, said Kanae. As for

Taya, she says, It offers a world of fantasy and escapism for me. Kanae adds that the all-male cast is a treat for the eyes , with two men in the spotlight instead of just one. In fact, the world of BL is keeping them so busy that they have no time for romance in real life!

No Manga, No Life! Isn' t BL great?

yes, double the eye candy!

Otome Road Map Why is Ikebukuro the mecca for Fujoshi? On weekends and even on weekdays, young girls carrying bags covered with anime character badges or even grown women in kawaii costumes can be seen flocking excitedly to a 200m stretch of shops to the west of Sunshine City in East Ikebukuro. This is Otome Road, the mecca for Fujoshi. Here, many Fujoshi come hunting for the latest Boys’ Love manga and paraphernalia, spend the day curled up with their favourite comics at a girls’-only manga café or indulge in a fantasy world at a butler cafe. This evolution can be traced to 2000 when Animate reopened after renovations with an emphasis on catering to the Fujoshi fan base, prompting K-Books to do the same. Toshima-ku, which is the ward in which Ikebukuro belongs to, actively promotes the existence of Otome Road and has even produced a walking map of it.

❶ K-Books

❷ Swallowtail Butler Café

K-Books dominates Otome Road with various shops specializing in BL manga, anime, cosplay goods and CDs produced by male voice artists.

Here you can indulge in a fantasy world where you are a lady or lord (apparently men frequent here too) with butlers at your beck and call at the ring of a bell. Impeccably groomed butlers will serve you afternoon tea and sophisticated sweets. Reservations are needed and this café was fully booked when WAttention visited on a weekday! ❸ CAFE 801 This is a girls -only manga café which prides itself on offering the widest range of BL literature in Japan at over 10,000 titles, and is a sanctuary for Fujoshi who can book private cubicles to curl up in and indulge in escapism. Lake Yamanakako Area

Take a Cruise, Take in the Views Lake Yamanakako was added to the World Heritage List as part of the Fujisan Cultural Site in 2013. It’s the highest of the Fuji Five Lakes in terms of elevation and the largest in terms of surface area making it ideal for fishing and water sports. After a quick barbeque lunch at PICA Yamanakako Village, followed by a brief nap in the comfy hammocks, we were fully recharged and ready to cruise the lake on the amphibious Yamanakako no KABA, which splashed from land to lake, with lively explanations from our onboard guide. We also tried the Excursion Ship [Swan Lake], just in time to see the sun set over Mt. Fuji.

Onsen with Mt. Fuji in the background We stayed at this highland resort built near the banks of Lake Yamanakako which offered views of Mt. Fuji from our guest rooms, the open-air baths and courtyard. It was like a buffet of Mt. Fuji photo spots! Speaking of which, we enjoyed the hotel’s buffet breakfast and its signature fluffy omelets - seasoned with a view of Mt. Fuji. We soaked off breakfast at the hotel’s natural outdoor hotspring, in awe of the perfect symmetry of Japan’s most famous mountain.

Fuji-Q Highland Area

Get High at the Foot of Mt. Fuji Fuji-Q Highland is possibly the most scenic theme park to scream your lungs out while taking the world’s tallest, fastest and steepest roller coaster rides. Unfortunately, it was raining when we arrived, but thanks to the “next generation movie theatre” called the Fuji Airways (Hikousha) ride, we could enjoy the stunning aerial views of Mt. Fuji from the comfort of our carriage seats. As lunchtime approached, we couldn’t resist the smell of fresh baked pastries at the Café Brioche, where we had tea and croissants with our new favorite French duo, Lisa & Gaspard.

Get high here Fuji-Q Highland Fuji-Q Highland features Guinness World Record breaking roller coasters. Fujiyama, the park's centerpiece attraction, was the world's tallest and fastest roller coaster when it opened in 1996, and it continues to rank among the best coasters in the world. Takabisha, built in 2011, is the steepest roller coaster in the world, dropping at an angle of 121 degrees.

Lake Kawaguchiko Area

Enjoy Mt. Fuji from another angle This is the most accessible of the Fuji Five Lakes with train and direct bus connections to Tokyo. It’s also a popular base from which to climb Mt. Fuji, with a hot spring resort town located at its east end. We took the ropeway to the summit of Mt. Tenjo and enjoyed the view of Mt. Fuji from a different angle, and topped off the climb with some tanuki (raccoon) mochi.

T O K Y O M U S T D O Explore Tokyo through the eyes of Tokyoites as they share their favorite secret hideaways.

Lars Holdaas Lars is a Norwegian, working as a trainee for the Norwegian Embassy for the past six months. Prior to this he was in Kansai for a year doing Japanese and East Asian Studies. While now in Tokyo, he still eats Okonomiyaki every week. He also writes music for an American reality TV series.

1 Hanging out in Kiba Park All the popular kids head out to Yoyogi Park, but there’s another park that’s quite nice too near the Tokyo Skytree that also works splendidly for all park-related affairs. Though the park is frequented by a larger proportion of Japanese families compared to Yoyogi park, but with a canal running through it and a designated area for barbequing, Kiba Park is definitely worth checking out. The park can be reached by taking the Hanzomon Line, then walking southeast for about 10 minutes from Kiba Station. Since the park stretches out quite far, it’s almost impossible to miss!

2 Gokon in Shibuya By now, you’ve probably received over 9,000 recommendations to check out karaoke and izakaya. If you want to experience something a bit off-the-radar for most tourists, there’s something called Japanese group blind dating, also known as Gokon. Basically you throw an equal number of guys and girls together, get nomihodai (all you can drink) for oiling the conversation, and enjoy a night out in the company of newly-made friends/might-be-lovers. Shibuya works especially well as a fancy neighbourhood with plenty of wine bars, izakayas and various other ways to make an otherwise awkward meeting totally romantic. Gokon works well for two reasons: larger selection of members of the opposite sex, and if none of them are your type, you can always get some much needed affection from your buddies.

3 Finding hilarious stuff at Don Quixote Don Quixote is a Japanese anything-you-want branch store that has close to everything, including cutlery, furniture, adult toys, bicycles, etc. Indeed, the store has plenty of items that most customers would agree are convenient in some way, but it also has a lot of stuff that reminds us of why Japan has such a reputation for being a quirky country. At first, the “Engrish” explanations of certain items might make you giggle, but then you discover items such as female cosplay-costumes tailored for large-sized men. Giving away too much would certainly spoil the experience, but I’ll say that Don Quixote is definitely a place to check out when you’ve had a few beers and are looking for some giggles. 4 Urban Exploring Urban exploring in Tokyo is quite fascinating, and there’s a relatively easy way to get started: next time you’re heading to a certain station and you have a few minutes extra, get off at the stop before, and walk roughly in the direction of your destination while making sure to follow any interesting paths along the way. Tokyo truly has amazing architecture, and some of the more interesting buildings are hidden away in small alleys. For starters, I would recommend the area around Yoyogi Park. Despite its proximity to such hectic areas as Shibuya and Shinjuku, it’s surprisingly quiet, and the Bulgarian Embassy located in this area is a prime example of a hidden architectural gem.

Kose Cool BB Spray Foundation It’s summer and you just wish there’s a long-staying foundation that can keep your skin silky smooth in the sun. Well, Kose heard you and came up with a cool-touch five-in-one foundation spray that will give you a refined complexion and fresh look all day long. Having tried dozens of beauty products myself, I am thrilled to share with you Kose’s foundation which has captured my heart and left my skin glowing with optimal radiance.

How to use

Nancy Liu Nancy is a writer, translator and interpreter in both Chinese and English. She lives in the city of Tokyo, enjoys reading historical novels and loves exploring foreign cultures in her free time.

Trial report My face has gotten really dry since the move to Tokyo last year, and I had to apply tons of moisturizers before makeup. On a hot summer s day, the idea of slathering on moisturizers before sunscreen and foundation just felt heavy and unappealing. This year, Kose s BB spray came to my rescue by introducing an ultralight coverage that serves the functions of beauty essence, sunblock, primer, foundation and powder. After application, I found my skin relished in the coolness of the spray, absorbing all the nourishing ingredients in the formula. Amazing as it may seem, my cheeks literally felt five degrees cooler and suppler. The foundation, which comes in two shades, covered every little flaw and evened out the complexion by lightening dark spots and eye bags. The part I love the best is that the feather-light finish can last all day̶even on a long day at work or out in the sun.

Finish the basic skin care steps before applying the spray-on. First, shake the can well and remove its cap. Spray the foundation onto the makeup sponge included in the package from a distance of two centimeters for one to two seconds. Smoothen the foundation onto face and neck, blending for a natural finish. Do not spray directly on the face as freeze burns can occur.

Recommendation Kose s Cool BB Spray foundation spray is an innovative beauty product that makes makeup on the go a breeze . The easy-to-carry spray bottle fits into any bag and delivers a quick, cool foundation touch wherever and whenever. Designed for everyday use in the summer, the multifunctional formula provides an invisible shield against damaging UVA and UVB rays without the hassle of applying sunscreen cream. Keep your makeup routine simple this summer and look great even in the heat with Kose Cool BB Spray.

Words of Japan

vol.02

Stay the course, and your desires will come true

「念ずれば花ひらく」 坂村真民のことば “Nenzureba Hana Hiraku” words of Shinmin Sakamura “Nenzureba Hana Hiraku” refers to the thinking that “if one perseveres, even a small seed will sprout, grow and eventually blossom beautifully”. The “blossom” here refers not to a real flower, but to “hope” or “happiness”. Or in other words, “If you don’t forget or give up, and continue to strive, even if you don’t succeed now, it’s alright as your hope will eventually be fulfilled”. In Japan, this is a phrase that many people use frequently and almost everyone knows. It was a phrase first composed by Shinmin Sakamura, a poet born in the early 20th Century. His father died when he was still very young, and he led a hand-to-mouth existence while supporting his mother. It is said that his mother first said this phrase to encourage the young Sakamura, who was striving very hard to become a teacher. Amidst the daily toil, he never gave up hope, and that strong drive may have been due to Profile of Koran Onishi

his mother’s emotional support. Now, the calligrapher who chose to write this phrase, Koran Onishi, said, “For me, it’s a phrase that comes to mind when something comes to fruition, rather than when in the midst of chasing a dream. When my wish comes true, I think thankfully of the truth in nenzureba hana hiraku.” And that, “No matter how big or small the goal, what’s important is to never give up”. With that meaning in mind, she wrote the word “nen”, meaning “thoughts”, in bold with plenty of ink, and the character “flower” as the centerpiece with light yet strong strokes. These simple and straight words by Sakamura that combine strength and warmth, well-loved by young and old, men and women alike, come to life on paper like flowers in bloom.

Contemporary Japanese calligrapher. She received numerous awards such as Shodo Geijutsuin first prize and the governor of Kochi award at Akinokuni national calligraphy competition. She is also a coterie of the Kansai Calligraphy Association, a Shodo Geijutsuin jury member, and board member of the Hakusen Shodokai.
