PARTNERED PROGRAMS

The Parks & Recreation Department is proud to partner with area organizations to offer even more programs to enrich community members! Please visit www.Waukee.org/parksandrec for program details, dates, ages, fees and more.

Bike With Cops The Waukee Police Department’s second annual “Bike With Cops” will be held Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to noon. Waukee Community School District students in grades 2-6 will enjoy a safety talk, two-mile bike ride and lunch with Waukee police officers! This bike ride is for experienced riders only; no training wheels, please. Helmets are required. The fee is $15 and includes a t-shirt.

Camp Brainiac

Camp Brainiac is a summer day camp for kids ages 6-12! It was created with a mission to avoid the dreaded “summer backslide.” Research shows that kids lose academic ground over the summer. Created and operated by licensed Iowa teachers, Brainiac campers will spend their days immersed in experiential learning. Teachers align camp fun with Iowa’s Core Curriculum requirements. Campers have plenty of outdoor and free time to burn off energy, too. This isn’t like REAL summer school!

Dickey’s Ryukyu: Little Ninjas and Karate Kids will learn the basic fundamentals of taekwondo and karate in a developmentally-appropriate format. Classes focus on the proper use of martial arts, selfrespect, self-discipline and coordination of mind and body. The instructor Dickey Renshi has more than 25 years of martial arts teaching experience. He is an elementary teacher and three-time inductee into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

Engineering for Kids Engineering for Kids classes and camps use hands-on activities to teach the engineering design process. This summer, the Medieval Mayhem sessions will have students building infrastructure like bridges and towers, constructing catapults and taking part in jousting games. The Amazing Race sessions will bring kids together into teams to design their own boats, plans and rockets in order to travel the farthest around the world.

ISU Extension and Outreach Iowa State University Extension and Outreach connects the research and resources from ISU to meet the needs and improve the lives of Iowans. Youth development programming offered in Waukee this summer includes the Inventors Workshop and Kids in the Kitchen. In Kids in the Kitchen, kids will prepare and taste healthy foods, take away kitchen safety knowledge and more. In the hands-on Inventors Workshop, participants will learn basic STEAM concepts and techniques. 22

Music Speaks Music Speaks, previously Kids in Harmony, provides live, interactive rhythm and music instruction with instruments and voice. No musical skill or background is needed to be successful within this group. The use of music is appealing to most children and creates a safe and structured environment to develop new skills. The goals are to have fun and carry over the desired skills to everyday life.

Rounded Minds™ Rounded Minds™ programs are bilingual and highenergy! Unique programming focuses on building healthy bodies and minds while learning a second language. Children will receive instruction in Spanish while having fun and learning new skills. Participants can choose to register for one or ALL Rounded Minds programs: Sports Exploration, Soccer, Art and/or Tumbling!

Studio Bea Dance: 2 to Move Studio Bea Dance’s 30-minute introductory class is designed for parents and their little dancer to bond and have fun. Dancers will gain confidence, and improve social and gross motor skills, all while using their imagination to learn and explore dance and movement. Children ages 18 months through 3 years old are invited to register for this program.

Sunflower Fine Art Sunflower Fine Art studio is owned by professional artist Tingting S. Beck. Her art has been honored at various professional art competitions, and she has taught art classes for nearly a decade. Children will learn the basic concepts of drawing three-dimensional objects on twodimensional paper, and then will move on to drawing still life objects. Adult classes focus on basic sketching, still life and color painting.

Waukee High School’s Cheer Camp The Parks & Recreation Department is partnering again with the Waukee High School Cheerleading Squad to offer Cheer Camp June 24-27. This camp will provide girls and boys with an opportunity to learn cheerleading techniques and new cheers. Parents are encouraged to watch on the last day when cheerleaders will perform a short routine from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Waukee Betterment Foundation Planning for Accessible Amenities

Sales Tax Revenue Equals Park Improvements

The City of Waukee expects the first phase of construction on the Waukee Youth Sports Complex & Park to wrap up in spring 2022; this phase includes ball fields, playgrounds, parking, concession stands, restrooms, trails and more. The site is located next to the Waukee Community School District’s second high school, north of Hickman Road and east of 10th Street. Thanks to a partnership with the Waukee Betterment Foundation, this exciting destination will also have a focus on all-inclusive amenities.

A new one-cent local option sales tax passed in Dallas County on Nov. 7, 2017. New sales tax dollars enable the City to build new parks and improve existing parks in Waukee without raising the property tax levy.

The fundraising campaign recently kicked off for the Waukee Miracle League® Ball Field and Play Area, as well as an all-inclusive fishing pier. The goal is to raise $2.5 million to put toward these specialized amenities. The Miracle League Field will serve those with disabilities by way of its custom-designed, rubberized field which allows wheelchairs and assistive devices easy access and also helps prevent injuries. An all-inclusive play area with the same surfacing and specialized equipment will also be installed near the field. The area should serve as a regional park destination. The City is also constructing a 12-acre lake. The Foundation is working to ensure its fishing pier suits everyone. This pier will have ample parking and restrooms nearby, as well as paved lowslope walks. Its design will allow all people – including those in wheelchairs – to fish from a safe and protected area. The Waukee Betterment Foundation’s goal is to have these all-inclusive projects completed by 2022. To learn more about supporting this initiative, visit WaukeeBetterment.org.

Summer Breeze Run The NCMIC & Professional Solutions Summer Breeze Run is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3. When runners register for the 5K or 10K, they choose a City to represent – Waukee, Clive or West Des Moines. For all those running for Waukee, the Waukee Betterment Foundation collects the registration fees to use for the all-inclusive projects! Registration fees through June 7 are $25 for the 5K and $35 for the 10K. Visit ncmicgroup.com/summerbreeze. 38

For more information visit www.Waukee.org/parksandrec. | 978.0007

Splash and Play at Fox Creek Park Fox Creek Park Phase 2 improvements are under construction, including work to build the City’s first splash pad! Other items in progress include a tennis court and four Pickleball courts. The park’s indoor shelter building will be finished soon as well; it has an 80-person capacity. Fox Creek’s new, non-traditional play area will include a climbing wall and rope climb, as well as a unique “inhill” slide and tunnel system. These new amenities are expected to open in summer 2019.

Two New Parks Under Construction The Trailside Dog Park is set to open in March, weather permitting. The four-acre site is located at 590 SE Brick Drive next to the Heart of the Warrior Trail. The park features separated large/small dog areas, a drinking fountain, dog waste stations, a shade structure, concrete walking paths, open greenspaces, public restrooms and parking. It also features a trail connection and bicycle racks. Dog Park passes are on sale now at www.Waukee.org/registration. Westown Meadows Park is a new neighborhood park being developed at 2445 SE Willowbrook Drive. Construction will occur this spring and summer, with an anticipated opening of fall 2019, weather permitting.
