RESEARCH

Rye, NY is a coastal suburb community located in Weschester County, NY. Founded in the mid-17th century, Rye has a rich architectural history that spans several centuries with some of the oldest buildings in Rye dating back to the colonial period.

In the 19th c., Rye saw the construction of many grand homes in a variety of Colonial styles, such as Greek Revival, Dutch Revival, a Gothic Revival. These mansions provided refuge for Manhattanites fleeing the heat of the city during the summers. During the 20th c., Rye began to develop as a suburban community due to its proximity to New York City and now acts as a major commuter town to Manhattan.

RESEARCH

The house at 1 Guion Road was built in 1897 in the Dutch Colonial Revival style. Based on the architectural style of early Dutch colonizers of the East Coast, this style is often found in turn-of-the-century residential buildings in the New York and New Jersey area. The style is characterized by a gambrel roof, symmetrical facades, flared eaves, shed dormers, and large multi-paned windows exhibiting a transom. This house in particular displays some atypical characteristics as its plan is asymmetrical and has a gambrel roof with a cross gabled roof.
