Town & Country Garden Club pitches in at House of Mercy By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

Members of Belmont’s Town and Country Garden Club recently took on a much needed and heartfelt project. The ladies paid a visit to the House of Mercy in Belmont where they rolled up their sleeves, grabbed rakes and shovels, and set to work doing some serious sprucing up of the landscaping and grounds. The project is part of an effort to update and beautify House of Mercy on its 30th anniversary which is May 18. Work the club did included spreading mulch, planting flowers, and raking. “We are a non-profit and unfortunately, the grounds of

House of Mercy haven’t been attended to in a long time and needed some ‘TLC.’,” said Tanya Sastoque, House of Mercy director of development and communications. “These wonderful ladies spent hours of hard work in beautifying the grounds of House of Mercy.” Other work planned for House of Mercy this year includes new paint, lights, and furniture. “When I began helping Tanya with the House of Mercy 30th anniversary. It was clear the house needed a makeover including the gardens and landscaping. Everything was overgrown and in much need of TLC, ” said Judy Dobies, co-chair House See GARDEN CLUB, Page 5

Gaston County Police keeping the river safe By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

It’s no secret that booming development on both shores of the Catawba River has also increased the number of people who turn to its waters for recreation and the Gaston County Police Marine Enforcement Unit is on the job to make sure everyone who does so is safe. The unit got started back in 2002. It currently has seven members- six officers led by Sgt. Eric Knupp. “The county saw a need for safety on the river and its lakes,” Knupp said. The unit patrols from Mt.

Island Dam near Mt. Holly to near the S.C. state line and Buster Boyd Bridge as well as Mountain Island Lake. They stay especially busy during the summer. “We are on duty in twelve hour shifts from the time school lets out to Labor Day,” said Knupp.”Due to COVID last year we saw a large increase of boat traffic on Lake Wylie and Mountain Island Lake. We have also seen a large increase of boat traffic, whether it be paddle boarders, kayakers or your normal recreational motor boaters in and around the northern part of Lake Wylie, specifically See RIVER, Page 4

Cramerton’s Central Park gets major makeover By Alan Hodge alan@cfmedia.info

After many, many, months of planning and hard work, Central Park in Cramerton has a fresh and exciting new look. The park is a seven acre or so spread of rolling hills near Washington and Brooklyn streets. It’s Cramerton’s oldest park and dates back to the 1980s. For years Central Park was on the back burner and its main feature was kudzu. The picnic shelter and restroom had become dilapidated. The ground in places was swampy. But now all that is a distant memory. “A ton of people are using Volunteer Barbara Thornton prepares to spray the wildflower butterfly bed at Central Park in it since the upgrades are being Cramerton. R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS A deal based on the reputation of your word When I came to Charlotte 25 years ago, we invited my widowed mother to move in with us. We built a home with a full in law suite. The developer used a local family-owned contractor to install the HVAC system. I had them perform its maintenance. I appreciated their responsiveness to my calls. Twelve years later, the system stopped working. The owner’s son came out and looked at it. Most HVAC systems only last twelve years. He could have said it had seen its useful life. Instead, he pointed out that a bug crawled into a switched and got “zapped.” I asked how much the switch was. It was $400. The system continues to run another twelve years. When the system reached 24 years old, I knew it was time to replace it. I spoke to the owner’s son and he came out to the house to look at the unit. He called back and gave me a quote for a new system. We agreed on the unit and the price. I asked if he was going to send me a quote that I could sign. He said, “No. I’ve been working with you so many years. We don’t need that.” The price he quoted included tax, permits, etc. A few days later, his crew arrived and installed the unit. I was expecting them to give me the bill so I could pay them. No bill. The owner’s son arrived a few days later for a final inspection. I asked for the bill. He said the office was mailing it to me. Still, no bill. Finally, the bill arrived. It was in the exact amount he originally quoted me. This deal was based on the reputation of both of our words. There was no e mail, no text, no voicemails from me accepting the price. Our conversation was over the phone, voice to voice. He quoted me a price for a new HVAC system which I accepted. I saw no paperwork or model information. I had

worked with him for 24 years and knew his word was good. I trusted that the unit would do what I Tony Marciano needed it to do. He also trusted me. I could have accepted this quote and then said I thought it was lower than that and argued with him over the price of the unit. I offered to give him a deposit and he declined. The work was done because of 24 years of working with me and knowing that I always paid my bills fully and on time. This is not how this world operates. We have contracts that have lots of fine print. There is a deposit that is required. Just before the technician leaves, the final bill is presented with the expectation for full payment to be made. What’s missing in this relationship is trust. There is no trust that the other party will do what it said it will do. Therefore, it requires a lot of paperwork, a deposit, and final payment when the work is completed. I think the same can be said of the Christian faith. In the first book of the Bible, Genesis, God says to the serpent that I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” God never broke His promise to us. He was true to His word. He sent Jesus to fulfill that promise. Today, He can still be counted on to be true to His word. I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend. Rev. Tony Marciano is the President/CEO of the Charlotte Rescue Mission. He is available to speak to your group. Go to www. charlotterescuemission.org and go to contact us- just ask for Pam.

Celebrating Mom! Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org

When we celebrated Mother’s Day this past week, we took a moment to honor one of God’s greatest gifts to us, our moms. Our mothers mean so much to us. They have given us love, support, and guidance. Our mothers are a major reason for why we are what we are today. There is no doubt, mothers shape the future. In the early church, many faithful men and women changed the world with the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ. One of those faithful Christians was Timothy. Timothy was born in the area of what is now Turkey. From a young age he became a Christian. Timothy encountered the Apostle Paul while Paul was conducting his second missionary journey. He became a faithful missionary companion of Paul, helping Paul in many of his mission endeavors. Timothy would go on to become the pastor of the great Ephesian church. Timothy lived for Jesus faithfully his entire life, even losing his life for Jesus as a martyr. Timothy was a great man of God, but how did he begin his path to Jesus? In 2 Timothy 1:5, Paul says to Timothy, “I am reminded of your faith that dwelt first in your grand-

mother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well” (ESV). For Timothy, it all started with his mother! Our mothers mean so much to us for so many reasons, and we can never repay everything they have done for us. We cannot repay them, but we can live lives that show we are worthy of all the things they have done for us. We can make our mothers proud. When we think of our mothers, we know all of the great responsibilities they bear. They work so hard for us, making great sacrifices. They give their best so we can have the best life possible. When we think of mothers, they reflect Jesus. They love us unconditionally, no mat-

ter how much we may hurt t h e m . They pay Rev. Trent Rankin whatever price is necessary for us. Jesus gives us unconditional love. Even though we sin, He is faithful to forgive us. He gave His best for us, His life on the cross. He paid the price of our sins for us. Not just Mother’s Day, but every day, may we give our moms the love and respect they deserve. May we also, give Jesus the love and respect He deserves as well. Our mothers are wonderful gifts from God, may we always celebrate them!

By Dennis Siracusa Fifty years ago I played at golf. I didn’t study about the proper use of golf clubs other than what I thought I was figuring out from my Silver Scotsman, Tommy Armour book. Being athletic, I forced scores in the mid 80’s on city courses. Gradually life crowded out my game. I never played wisely or used golf’s tools intelligently. Life is like that too, don’t you think? Because we hear about evolution a lot, (and we all do), most of us do our sinful best to plow through life instead of considering wise concepts like righteousness, purpose, calling, and destiny or asking God for help. And without God, concepts like righteousness, purpose and calling (while vital) are illusive and head scratching. We’re not to worry about life’s essentials! Matthew 6: 33-34 “but seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you.” And don’t worry about tomorrow either, focus on today. Seek God’s help! How? James 4:1-4 the apostle reminds us when we have a need, PRAY AND ASK FOR IT and always ask with righteous motives. Lots of needs surround all of us. In a recent Adult Drug Recovery seminar the panel discussed a burgeoning drug problem but sadly, most of our community attempts to help have amounted to a 90% repeat offense rate; it’s easy for those trapped in addiction or other hard life circumstances to feel their burdens are too great and will never end. From my experience, lasting hope rests in the Lord only and sadly many of our attempts to solve problems persistently sidestep God. Ben Hogan 8/1912-7/1997 (85) is considered one of the greatest golfers in history. He’s noted for his influence on golf swing theory and his ability to strike the ball perfectly but this wasn’t always the case. Mr. Hogan struggled with a terrible hook until he came up with his “secret”. Most assumed he overcame his hook by spending endless hours practicing and while he practiced a lot, that wasn’t his secret. He re-

positioned his left guide hand on the grip and loosened his dominant right hand; he became virtually unbeatable once he perfected that. Hogan’s creativity and open- Dennis Siracusa ness to change allowed him to discover an answer others were blind to. John 15:5 reminds us that “without Jesus we can’t do anything.” Like Ben Hogan, we too have to face our blindness. In life we need to be open to the leading of our conscience and God’s Holy Spirit. The bible is all about God’s truth. If we aren’t open to the nudging of our conscience and the Holy Spirit, we are destined for lifelong hardship and eventually, eternal separation from God. Let’s shed our stubbornness and loosen our efforts to guide our lives without consulting God. And Charles Spurgeon wisely reminds us that “Whether we like it or not, asking is the rule of the Kingdom.” When we turn to the Lord we won’t have to solve our problems with so much of our own dominant strength. Let’s bow our heads, loosen our grip on life and ask Jesus for help.

Throughout my tenure, I have worked diligently to serve and protect all of our citizens and the county. Working with the brave deputies, detention officers and our administrative staff we have always put the interest of public safety and service first. That’s why I will seek re-election as your Sheriff in the upcoming 2022 General Election. I know there are some candidates already on the campaign trail telling many of you that I won’t be a candidate next year. That’s not true, and I wanted you to hear it directly from me. I will be a candidate for re-election in 2022. I want to continue serving Gaston County with innovative programs in our law enforcement support, our courts, our civil service, our jail, our sex offenders registration program, our domestic violence programs and the community support programs. In these turbulent times, I will continue to be a dependable, steady leader. I will not apologize for being an advocate for law enforcement and standing up to execute my constitutional duties as your elected Sheriff. I will continue to have an open-door policy for any citizen of Gaston County, and I will execute my lawful duties without prejudice or prescriptions. Belmont and Mount Holly. This is due in large part to the new marinas, as well J. R. Cash’s restaurant in Mount Holly, which boaters can dock at and go eat. The White Water Center has caused an influx of kayakers and paddle boarders north of I-85 as well.” The unit is on call year round. The unit currently has two boats. One is a 22-foot, center console McKee Craft with a Yamaha 225 engine. The other craft is a Workskiff brand 33-footer with twin 250 Yamaha motors. The skiff is similar to a type of boat used by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coastguard. It’s made mostly of heavy duty aluminum with an inflatable “collar” around the hull. It has an enclosed cabin and can hit speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. It is able to handle any water or weather

conditions that it will ever encounter on our local waters. The skiff has an impressive array of equipment. Electronics include side and down-looking sonar, forward looking infrared radar, weather radar, and all the radios needed to stay in contact with other law enforcement and first responder units. It has a computer that can check boat registrations and licenses. The skiff also carries extra life jackets, first aid supplies, has an array of spotlights on top, and more. Fully equipped, the skiff had a price tag of $330,000. However, it did not cost the taxpayers of Gaston County a nickel. The skiff was paid for with a $100,000 Government Services Grant and with asset forfeiture funds connected to drug arrests. One of the biggest thing officers see are wake zone violations and people passing

too close to marinas and the bridges. The unit’s officers frequently pull up on shore at boat launch areas such as the one near the Hwy. 74 bridge in Belmont and walk through the parking lots to make sure everything is OK. They also check the water intakes at Catawba Nuclear Station. The unit has responded to many, many calls of a serious nature, for instance they have responded to multiple drownings, boat fires, and boating accidents with injuries. Overall, the Marine Enforcement Unit’s main objective is to provide safety and security on the lakes of Gaston County as well as educating the public about boating safety so that everyone using the lakes can have a safe and enjoyable time. “It’s all about us helping the public,” said Knupp.

Gas prices in the Carolinas have increased significantly on the week, as the Colonial Pipeline outage threatens pump prices and possibly supply. AAA forecasts gas prices to climb even more this week in reaction to the shutdown, which delivers approximately 45% of all fuel to the East Coast. On the week, North Carolina’s gas price average increased by 6 cents, currently sitting at $2.73 – this is 10 cents more expensive than last month and $1.06 more expensive than a year ago. South Carolina’s gas price average increased by 7 cents on the week, currently sitting at $2.67 – this is 9 cents more expensive than last month and $1.10 more expensive than a year ago.. The national gas price average jumped 6 cents on the week, to $2.96 – and if the trend continues, an increase of three more cents would make the national average the most expensive since November 2014, the last time we saw average prices at $2.99 or higher. Over the weekend, the Colonial Pipeline announced they were the victim of a cybersecurity attack and, as a precaution, shut down the pipeline, which runs from Texas to New York Harbor. At this time, some lateral lines have reopened, but there is no word of when the mainline, including the gasoline line, will be operational. While there is sufficient gasoline supply in the U.S. (235.8 million bbl), other pipelines and the Department

of Transportation’s temporary hours-of-service exemption for tanker trucks transporting gasoline and other fuels, will be able to ease the strain, but not resolve the issues caused by the pipeline interruption. Once the pipeline is up and running, there could still be residual delays as it takes about 15–18 days for fuel to flow from Texas to New York. In response to the temporary shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline, Governor Roy Cooper signed an Executive Order on May 10 declaring a state of emergency in North Carolina and temporarily suspending motor vehicle fuel regulations to ensure adequate fuel supply supplies throughout the state. “Today’s emergency declaration will help North Carolina prepare for any potential motor vehicle fuel supply interruptions across the state and ensure motorists are able to have access to fuel,” said Governor Cooper. The Order received concurrence from the Council of State.

Keep these tips in mind to conserve fuel: • Plan ahead to accomplish multiple errands in one trip, and whenever possible avoid high-traffic times of day. • If you own more than one car, use the most fuel-efficient model that meets the needs of any given journey. • Remove unnecessary and bulky items from your car. Minimize your use of roof racks and remove special carriers when not in use. It takes more fuel to accelerate a heavier car, and the reduction in fuel economy is greater for small cars than for larger models. • Minimize your use of air conditioning. Even at highway speeds, open windows have less effect of fuel economy than the engine power required to operate the air conditioning compressor. • In hot weather, park in the shade or use a windshield sunscreen to lessen heat buildup inside the car. She rallied the troops who spent two days on the beautification. This is why I love our community so much. Everyone is so willing to help.” The hard work that went into the beautification project was much appreciated. ‘The residents seem to be excited,” Green said. “One gentleman asked me how often we’d be coming back to water and maintain.’ Overall, the project was a huge success and laid the groundwork (pun intended) for other activities at House of Mercy this 30th anniversary year including the annual WALK for AIDS set to take place September 18, 2021 at Stowe Park in downtown Belmont. To begin with the kudzu is gone thanks to a herd of goats. The park’s drainage issues have been addressed. The restroom is brand spanking new. The picnic shelter, the largest in Cramerton’s parks, has a new coat of paint, ten new tables, and two colorful pieces of artwork on its side. “I am working with an artist to have a mural painted on the other side,” Smallwood said. On the slope near the picnic shelter a wildflower and butterfly garden has been planted. A stream that runs through the park that had been covered up has been opened and stones at its lower end form a nice little waterfall and bridge. There’s more. Boulders have been placed at several locations in the park as visual focal points and places to have a seat. Over 20 new trees have been planted. Special emphasis has been placed on “moving” at Central Park. Three-fourths of a mile of gravel walking trails have been constructed meandering through the landscape. Belmont Central Elementary wants to give a special shoutout to the cafeteria team: Jessie Maltba- manager, Diane Hughes, Anita Duncan, Teresa Craig, Cindy Collette. These ladies have worked tirelessly this school year to deliver lunches to the classrooms, ensure all the orders are correct, refill utensils, napkins and ketchups, etc.! The teachers appreciate their flexibility, willingness to make adjustments and all of their upbeat and positive attitudes. The take home bags are put together by these ladies each week and they worked extra hard on the wonderful Spring Break boxes. Each morning they greet children with warm hellos and a big smile as they enter the building. Gaston Schools photo
