Bill Bridgeman of Mt. Holly rarely meets an old house he doesn’t love. In fact, he’s taken that attraction, combined it with considerable, real-world, architectural restoration skills, and made a career out of preserving and repairing old houses and other historic structures in our area. Bridgeman developed his interest in vintage architecture in an interesting way. “In 1974 when I was in sixth grade my dad looked at an old house in Easley, S.C.,” he said. “It was my first memory of seeing one.” That scene, plus the fact that his mother owned an antiques store, planted a seed in Bridgeman that grew into a passion. The next step in his career path took Bridgeman to Winthrop University where he got

Governor Roy Cooper and North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mandy K. Cohen, M.D. shared an update last Friday on the state’s COVID19 progress. Throughout the pandemic, state officials have taken a data-driven approach and have been guided by the science in making decisions. Following yesterday’s guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Preven-
tion (CDC) that fully vaccinated individuals can safely do most activities without wearing a mask or the need to social distance from others, the state will remove its indoor mask mandate for most settings. Additionally, the state will lift all mass gathering limits and social distancing requirements. These changes went into effect as of 1:30 PM May 14. See GOVERNOR, Page 4

R ECOLLECTIONS AND R EFLECTIONS A hairy situation A few months ago I decided to grow my hair out. Hey, at my advanced age I am thankful to have plenty to go around. I know lots of folks not so fortunate including my halfbrother Wally whose dome became chrome when he was about 30 years old. But he had a big dose of bad genes. In 1970 I joined the so-called counter culture and grew long hair. At that time I was a slave at UPS and my boss Tim Griffin ( a rather gruff Yankee-man) would come to me every day and say “Hey, when you gonna get a haircut?” Only he would add a word between “a” and “haircut” that begins with the fifth letter of the alphabet. Sometimes I would get tired of long hair and would go get it cut really short- a “Steve McQueen” style. For many years I stuck to a “John Boy Walton” coif. Finding a good haircut can be hard. Lots of places I have tried over the years produced on my head what I call a “Russian Tractor Factory Worker” or a “Pudding Bowl” or a “Moe of the Three Stooges” cut. Others did better. So, as I said, for an experiment and a lark, I decided to let my mane grow again. The results have been interesting and a revelation of sorts. To begin with, I have been reminded of the fact that the human ear never stops growing. In other words, to cover my ears, my hair has had to get longer to achieve the same amount of coverage. Also,
there seems to be a bit of hairline recession along the sides of my haid. Also, a bit of thinning has happened on the top in a Friar Tuck sort of way. But I have yet had to resort to the “comb Alan Hodge Banner-News Editor over”. So . I am at a crossroads. Should I let it grow or go the Steve McQueen route. One of life’s quandaries is upon me. Hey, maybe I should grow a beard and go for the Johannes Brahms look. What do you think? As I type this I am looking at a photo of myself taken 42 years ago. Am I the same person? In some ways yes. In many ways no. The mop looks familiar. But mein jowls are about half the width they are now and the overall fizz-eek a helluva lot better than now. The pose was for fun. But there was an undercurrent of truth in it. Thomas Wolfe wrote a novel “You Can’t Go Home Again”. Maybe my new hairstyle is an attempt to do just that. Maybe not. Do you have a time and a look you would like to go back to? Can you still wear bell bottom jeans or squeeze into a micro-mini-skirt? You never know. If you go down that road from yesteryear it might end up being a somewhat hairy situation- bigger ears or not.

I wrestled with the Bike Rack on the Trunk – Guess Who Won? By Tony Marciano My son and daughterin-law purchased their first house. It’s a brand-new home. There are blessings to purchasing a new home. Obviously, everything is new. You don’t have to wonder how much longer the AC system is going to last before it stops working. However, there are down sides to purchasing a new home. When you purchase a resale, the previous owner has added their personal touches. They may have added shelving to the garage or extra shelves in the food pantry. We had to add shelving to their food pantry. When they sell, the next owner will benefit from his work. Since their home does not have a garage, they needed a shed to store outdoor tools. My son decided instead to go with a plastic shed. It “snaps” together similar to Lego’s. There would be no power tools or no compressed air nailing machines. Just soap on the connections where they “click” together. After unloading his trunk of some items, he left it open. Sometime later, I went back to the car and noticed the trunk was still open. I’m from Jersey – we don’t trust anyone. We lock everything. I went to close the trunk. I forgot he had a two-bicycle bike rack on the trunk. It stuck out very far from the end of the trunk. Trying to be a good father, I closed it. You know what happened. The bars smacked me in the head. I felt like a football player getting tackled. If that wasn’t enough, the straps that were hanging loose smacked me in the face. I felt as though I just got hit in the head with a 2 by 4. When I joined everyone, they asked me what happened. Both my forehead and my nose were bleeding. I was a mess. It hurt. A few days later, I was in a meeting and had to explain to everyone what happened. I still think back to that moment when the bike rack hit me in the head. Had I stepped to the side of the car and closed the trunk, I would have been fine. But I didn’t. I could have gotten mad at the bike rack for attacking me. It wasn’t it’s fault. It was doing what it was supposed to do –

strapped to the trunk with the purpose of transporting bikes. Just like I should have not tangled with the bike rack, there are people with whom I cannot win a fight. I need to step to the side of their attitude and let them say what they want but not respond. Some time ago someone was mad at me and told me what they thought of me. Rather than confront them, I just listened. When they were done, I responded, “It was good talking to you.” The call ended. I’ve learned that “Hurt People Hurt People.” Read that again. They operate out of the woundedness of their life as they pour their pain onto you. There is a Scripture verse that says, “6 “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under
their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.” Tony Marciano C a n I paraphrase that to say, “Don’t allow the wounded people in your life to make you feel less than lovable. If you do, they’ll take your heart, trample it with their words, and leave you in a puddle of feeling like you are worthless and a second-class person.” I’ll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend. Rev. Tony Marciano is the President/CEO of the Charlotte Rescue Mission. He is available to speak to your group. All in! Rev. Trent Rankin Salvation Church, Gastonia, NC salvationchurchnc.org
When we were in high school, there were a lot of different clubs you could join, like the science club, math club, monogram club etc. I remember one year in high school, I was invited to join one of the clubs. I paid my dues, but that was it. I never attended any of the meetings or took part in any of their service projects. I did, however, show up and have my picture taken with the group for the yearbook. If you look in that yearbook, you we see me with the club, yet I was not really a part of the club. Our relationship with Jesus can be that way some time. We trust in Jesus, but that is about where we stop. Then we just plan to be in heaven one day. In 2 Samuel 15:14-22 King David in on the run, fleeing from his son Absalom. His son had made rebellion and had himself proclaimed king. David fled Jerusalem with his followers before his son arrived. One of the people who followed was a man named Ittai. Ittai was a Gittite from Gath. Ittai was a Philistine, the enemy of Israel. Ittai and his followers had started following David. David told Ittai to return, since he could not guar-

antee what would happen to them. Ittai said, “As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king shall be, whether or death or for life, there also will your Rev. Trent Rankin servant be” (2 Samuel 15:21, ESV). Ittai was dedicated, he was prepared to go with David, even if it meant he would die. When we give our lives to Jesus, we are dedicating ourselves to God. It is an eternal relationship sealed with the precious blood of Jesus. It is a serious relationship of total surrender. It is so much more than just going to church from time to time, or even reading the Bible occasionally. When we come to Jesus, we must be all in, ready to walk with Him. Ittai did not know what the future held with David, but he was prepared to go in life, or if necessary, death. When Ittai joined David, he dedicated himself forever. Jesus is ready to save you today, to forgive you of your sins. The important question is, are you ready to dedicate yourself to Jesus? Are you ready to go all in?

You can never have too much beach By Lisa Harper My husband and I, along with our dog Dixie, recently took a much needed and deserved beach vacation. We escaped to Garden City for an entire week. The weather was perfect, although we did have a couple of small rain showers. All in all we truly enjoyed visiting this tranquil, beautiful city. Ironically a few days before we left, a close friend in California called us to let us know he and his step daughter would be at the beach for about eight days. What beach you might ask? Myrtle Beach, of course, .... and his residence during this trip was just four miles from the condo we were renting. How cool was that? We had planned our trip back in January, so the timing was unbelievable. We enjoyed the pier at Garden City, which was just a stones throw from our condo. They offer an array of karaoke during the week, along with a nice menu. No big crowds, just a perfect time and place to seek sun, sand, and shelter. One of the karaoke singers was quite entertaining. His name was Frazier. He performed like a pro, and his song selections brought back memories from days gone by..a favorite era of mine..the 70’s. The beach is a medicine bottle all it’s own. One can certainly unwind, even though it is a temporary getaway, the after effects can be rewarding for much longer. Bare footing in the sand, breathing in salt air, exercise (walking), swimming in mineral rich water, and rest and relaxation are all definitely healing therapies. No doctor visit needed.
While there, we enjoyed seeing other friends as well. They live in North Myrtle beach. Both are previous Belmont residents, and they are continuing to enjoy this new chapter in their lives. Lisa Harper Something I could get use to. Lest we not forget about “food” .... whatever your favorite is...pizza or seafood, everything tastes better at the beach. We relished on both of these, along with a stop at Dairy Queen toward the end of our week. There was also a few trips to the grocery store for staples. Some of which we brought back home. This was the first time Dixie had visited the beach. She was a little reluctant to the sound and swirl of the ocean, but nevertheless, she thoroughly enjoyed the getaway as well. The fireworks, although short lived each night, did put a damper on her nerves. But now that she is a little older, this is one item we can mark off her bucket list. The beach is, for me and many others, the best form of therapy. Just being in nature, enjoying the sun and sand- it’s what takes away our anxiety or responsibility for the day. Not having to worry for a day is one of the best feelings in the world. Who would not agree with that? Our memories of the ocean will linger on, long after our footprints in the sand are gone.

Cardboard, empty bottles, pieces of cut lumber, broken electronics, medical supplies, pieces of metal, and dozens of facemasks. That’s just a few of the things that volunteers collected as they filled up 20 trash bags during the City of Lowell Litter Sweep ton April 17. Volunteers even discovered some stormwater drains that were blocked by trash. Blocked stormwater drains can cause flooding in the street during heavy rain events and all that trash that makes it through the grates ends up in our river, creeks, and streams. Thank you to the volunteers for helping beautify Lowell and helping keep litter out of the water system.

care settings like nursing homes, and certain congregate settings like correctional facilities and homeless shelters. NCDHHS will continue to have strong public health recommendations for individuals to continue to protect one another until more people are vaccinated. People who are not vaccinated should wear a mask and maintain distance in all indoor public settings and in outdoor settings when they can’t maintain six feet of distance. Masks are strongly recommended for everyone at large crowded indoor events like sporting events and live performances. NCDHHS recommends public facing businesses post signage reminding guests to social distance and wear a face covering if they are not fully vaccinated; remind employees to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19; have a plan to immediately isolate and remove sick workers; and clean high-touch surfaces once a day. Businesses may choose to continue to require that their customers wear masks. The Department of Health and Human Services will also continue to expand strategies to reach people who have not yet gotten vaccinated. Information on the state’s vaccine distribution is available at YourSpotYourShot. nc.gov (English) or Vacunate. nc.gov (Spanish). People can find nearby vaccine providers using NCDHHS’ online tool, Find a Vaccine Location. The state’s COVID-19 vaccine hotline number is 888-6754567.

“The Parsonage”. “It took four years to rebuild so that it looked like brand new,” He said. “I used as much of the original material as possible.” One of Bridgeman’s favorite projects was the 1892 McNinch House in Charlotte’s Fourth Ward. The house has been a restaurant for the past 30 years. “I think I touched every square inch of it,” said Bridgeman. Locally, Bridgeman has been involved in the preservation of the 1843 St. Joseph’s Catholic Church near Mt. Holly. He has also served as caretaker there. In Belmont, Bridgeman has done work on the 1899 R.L. Stowe, Sr. house on E. Catawba St. that serves as the
Belmont Historical Society Museum. He is also slated to begin preservation work on the Yates Abernathy Mill House on the museum grounds. Bridgeman is a sticker for using authentic materials. He’s also a big believer in repurposing vintage wood and windows. “I am against plastic windows,” he says. “Modern materials are not as good. That’s where salvage comes in.” He also doesn’t believe in rushing a job. “Ninety percent of my work is proper preparation,” he said. So, what sort of person lets Bridgeman work his magic on their old house? “My clients are people who love their houses and want it like it was,” he said. His advice for anyone looking to get an older home? “Do your research,” he said. “Learn as much as you can about it.”

who looks forward to sharing what she learns with her colleagues at North Belmont and other schools. “I’m hopeful that this experience will be a platform to promote something positive for our community.” Established in 2000, the Kenan Fellows program connects outstanding educators with mentors in local industries and creates opportunities that build meaningful relationships. Teachers participating in the 2021-2022 Kenan Fellows program receive leadership training to drive innovations in STEM education and help students build careerready skills. As a Kenan Fellow, Hairston becomes part of a statewide network of teacher leaders who are working collaboratively to advance STEM education in North Carolina and beyond. “I’m so thankful that an organization of this caliber recognizes remarkable talent in educators like Vanessa Hairston,” concluded Beam. “We are very happy about this experience for her.”

Brands and how the company produces such products as roofing, doors, windows, metal panels and walls, gutters, and stonework. Even though her students are elementary age, she believes it is never too early to begin focusing on careers and planting a seed for the future. Hairston wants what she teaches inside the classroom to be applicable to her students’ lives outside the classroom. She says they enjoy learning about concepts associated with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), and through the Kenan Fellows program, she hopes to convey to her students how STEM is used to create everyday items such as doors and windows. It’s possible that the knowledge and experience she shares with her students might inspire them to be a part of the next generation of builders and manufacturers. “It is such an honor to represent North Belmont Elementary and Gaston County Schools in the Kenan Fellows program,” added Hairston,

“We can take this step today because the science shows our focus on getting people vaccinated is working,” said Governor Cooper. “But to keep moving forward – and to make sure that we keep saving lives – more people need to get vaccinated.” The ability to lift restrictions sooner than anticipated following the CDC’s guidance shows the importance of vaccinating all North Carolinians. As of last week, even more people can get vaccinated. Younger teens between 12 and 15 can now get the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. Young people are vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus, just like everyone else, and the percent of COVID-19 cases in North Carolina children 17 and under has been increasing. North Carolina continues to focus on distributing vaccines quickly and equitably. To date, the state has administered over 7.7 million doses. 51% percent of those 18 and up are at least partially vaccinated, and 46% percent of those 18 and up have been fully vaccinated. In accordance with the new CDC guidance, there will still be certain settings where masks and other safety measures will be required. Masks will still be required in child care, schools and camps as most children are either not yet vaccinated or are not yet eligible to be vaccinated. Everyone, including people who are fully vaccinated will still be required to wear a mask in certain settings such as public transportation, health care settings like hospitals, doctor’s offices and long-term

Gaston County Extension & Community Association recognizes 2020 volunteers NC Extension & Community Association (ECA), in collaboration with NC Cooperative Extension, held its annual Achievement Day celebration on May 6, 2020. This event honored and celebrated Gaston County ECA volunteers’ hard work and community activities of 2020. Although COVID greatly impacted the organization’s activities last year, it certainly did not prevent ECA volunteers from serving our community. Last year, ECA contributed approximately 5,263 volunteer hours - an estimated value of $133,838 - to Gaston County. Volunteers contributed many hours to making face coverings for Gaston County businesses and residents, along with surrounding areas of North Carolina. Also, ECA volunteers continued working on projects that could be safely done at home, such as making baby quilts and caps for infants in the neonatal intensive care unit at CaroMont Regional Medical Center. The following volunteers were recognized for their outstanding 2020 ECA contributions and service hours: Patti Wells, Gastonia: 2020 Outstanding Leadership Award. Ms. Wells’ leadership during the challenges of COVID was essential to

Annual Christmastown 5k registration open The ChristmasTown 5K has become one of Gaston County’s most popular holiday traditions. Close to 1,500 runners and their supporters come to McAdenville for one night in late November to run 3.1 miles under the lights of Christmas Town U.S.A. In 2020 the event was modified due to COVID restrictions and a scaled-back light display, however race organizers are looking forward to once again hosting
the traditional event on November 27th of this year. “We are excited to plan for a traditional ChristmasTown 5K this year ” said Ashley Westmoreland, Event Coordinator and President of the McAdenville Woman’s Club. “We are also offering a virtual option again for those participants who aren’t yet comfortable joining us in person.” The 2021 race will see some improvements that organizers hope will enhance

the experience of participants. Runners will find a new website with simple registration process, chip timing for the start line, notification options for instant results, and bib transfer options. Registration is out-pacing past years, as residents seem to be excited for the local event to return. “Every ChristmasTown 5K has sold out well before race date, sometimes over a month in advance,” states Westmoreland. “This year we are on pace to a record sell out, so we recommend registering as soon as possible or you might miss out.” You can find more information on the event and register at bit.ly/mcadenville.

Last week’s gas shortage caused some interesting scenes. In North Belmont, a tanker truck full of fuel pulled up to the Circle K. Within minutes the parking lot was gridlock as people whipped in looking for gas. The cause of the temporary shortage was blamed on Russian computer criminals hacking into the Colonial Pipeline system. The company had the fuel flowing again by Thursday but it still took a while before stations were resupplied. Photos by Alan Hodge
Connect the Dots: It’s all about Him
Shells By Dennis Siracusa I love the diversity of the Carolinas; availability of the mountains, ocean, lakes, clear streams and endless wildlife, huge trees and wonderful history. And wrapped in that, God has wonderful lessons for us. Today I’m thinking of sea-gulls and reflecting on Myrtle Beach and why there are billions of shell fragments on the beach; whole shells that have gotten pounded to smithereens? Oh sometimes we’ll find a small half shell or even both halves but even those shells are not resplendent. Not like the beauties for sale in the beach stores. But even if we gaze at those store bought shells, given enough time, we realize something is missing….. LIFE! What happened to the creature whose home was that shell and what was its life story? Without visible life or the story, the shell is merely a dim memory. We’re not so different are we? Matthew 6:26 reminds us how special we are. “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” God has purpose and value with everything. And all of creation is connected through God’s imposed divine purpose for everything. So what is wrong with so many of us? Why do we so often fall short of our dreams; why can circumstances turn our lives a dull uninteresting color? I think there are two main reasons. First, we don’t do what God tells us
in Matthew 6:23. We are not diligent about asking and seeking God about our purposes and calling in life every day. Second, many of us are paralyzed by fear; fear of failure, fear of facing tough life circumstances, fear of unknowns, fear of persecution for standing up for God’s standards, and fear of rejection. FEAR, FEAR, FEAR! So what happens as a result? We turn into shells of ourselves. Dim shadows of what God meant us to be. A result far short of the glory He wants for us and do you know what? We often kid ourselves into thinking we’re doing just fine or we go to elaborate lengths to polish or reshape our image so we look good on the outside while no life resides inside us. Pharisees in the bible were referred to as whitewashed tombs; similarly there is no life inside many of us; or not much anyway; maybe just a settled for life and that is sadly impoverished. God didn’t provide all of His creation wonder as a distraction or to tantalize us but never let us enjoy it. He wants relationship with us and He wants us busy about sharing the vital truth of the gospel message. Beyond that he wants us to enjoy this earthly life abundantly not as an empty shell. Jesus Christ, during his earthly life, illuminated Himself as many things; love, truth, shepherd and door. He didn’t come to just show us the door but to teach us that He is the door, the truth and the life. We find abundant living and purpose only through Him.

Keep Belmont Beautiful 2021 Clean Campus Awards After a year off due to the pandemic, Keep Belmont Beautiful (KBB) happily resumed its yearly outdoor beautification grant program for public schools. Page Primary, Belmont Central Elementary, North Belmont Elementary, Belmont Middle and South Point High Schools wrote grant applications and were awarded $350 each. This year Belmont Middle School elected to save its grant funds until the move into its new building. Each of the other four schools met the completion date of May 6. Two teams of judges visited and scored each campus on the grant project and general grounds conditions such as absence of litter, neatness and presence of environmental projects. Nine KBB grant judges, consisting of board and community members, were delighted to visit the four schools and gave high marks and praise to each one for their work on grant projects. Community members who are interested in serving on the KBB board are asked to
phone the office at 704-825-8587 or type the following link into your browser https://www. cityofbelmont.org/keep-belmont-beautiful.
Carlos E. Oros graduated from Gaston College on May 14 with an Associate in Science degree. His mathematics instructor, Sholeh Shariat, has nominated him for an academic excellence award for his outstanding work in her Calculus III class and his contributions to the Gaston College community. Oros started at Gaston College in 2019, shortly after graduating from North Gaston High School. He had not made plans to continue his education, but friends and family recommended that he apply for community college. His experience at Gaston College changed his attitude about school and he intends to attend UNC-Charlotte to major in Mathematics. “Gaston College was really enjoyable,” he said. “I’ve really appreciated the people there and interactions with my professors.” He plans to become a high school teacher or perhaps a college professor. In her nomination of Oros for the Associate in Science Outstanding Graduate award,
Shariat said, “Carlos received an A for all his assignments and tests in my Calculus III class this semester and has also completed the extra work to make the class an Honors course. He is a very bright and motivated student, has done extremely well on all his tests and projects, and works very well with other students in the Math Lab. Carlos is an excellent student tutor in the Gaston College Carlos E. Oros Learning Center and has had very positive impact was a member of the Gaston on the students’ learning and College Math Team that took success. He also worked as my first place in team competiassistant in my pre-calculus al- tion at the 2019 North Carogebra class.” lina Mathematical Association Shariat cited Oros’ other of Two Year Colleges math activities at Gaston College, tournament. Oros is also in the including participation in the Gaston College SPARC proMath Club, serving as secgram, which offers scholarretary in 2019-2020 and as vice-president in 2020-2021. ships to Associate in Science In those roles, he helped orga- students who show academic nize Math Club meetings and merit and intend to major in prepared club members for a STEM field at a four-year future math tournaments. Because of COVID concerns, last year’s Gaston County high school graduation ceremonies were a socially distant departure from the usual festivities. This year, the Class of 2021 event will look more like the traditional deal- but with a twist on the time frame. Ergo, Gaston County Schools plans to hold inperson ceremonies for high school graduations and the ceremonies will be held outdoors in cohorts. The graduations were originally scheduled for Saturday, May 29, but Gaston Schools leaders approved a plan at the March 15 meeting that will break graduation up into groups and times to allow for current COVID-19 protocols.
Graduation for most Gaston County high schools will be held the night of Friday, May 28. Traditionally, graduations were held on Saturday mornings. Each school would hold two graduation ceremonies on May 28, with the Cohort A family starting at 5:30 p.m. and Cohort B family starting at 8 p.m.: These schools include: Ashbrook, Bessemer City, Cherryville, East Gaston, Forestview, Highland Hunter Huss, North Gaston, South Point, Stuart W. Cramer. The following schools will hold graduation ceremonies on the following days: Gaston Early College - May 20, Gaston Virtual Academy - May 26, Warlick - May 26, Webb - May 26.
Of course, COVID and other safety practices will be in place at the events. These will include- health screening, temperature checks, metal detecting, masks required, social distancing. Graduation seniors will be required to stay for both ceremonies and the entire class will march into and out of the stadium together. In the event of inclement weather, a second attempt to hold the ceremonies would be on Saturday, May 29 at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Gaston Schools also plans to offer a minimum of four tickets per graduate, and a prerecorded video showing each graduate will be available for those unable to attend the ceremonies.
Congratulations to Molly Matthews (left) and Tristan Nogueira (right) of Stuart W. Cramer High School who were selected as 2021 nominees competing for best actor and best actress in this year’s Blumenthal Performing Arts High School Musical Theater Awards, also known as The Blumey Awards. Both Molly and Tristan will participate in a two-day workshop focused on voice, acting, and dance, led by industry professionals. After this workshop, Blumenthal officials say all nominees will audition a second time to determine the regional winners for best actor and best actress who will participate in the National High School Musical Theater Awards (known as the The Jimmy Awards).

Ida Rankin Elementary recently turned in their best results yet for their food drive! This year’s “One Book, One School - Stock the Shelves with Kind Words” resulted in over three tons...that’s t-o-n-s... of donations to our pantry. According to Dr. Donna Kelly, Ida Rankin’s principal, this was one of the best food drives yet. She said, “We ended up with 7,564 items. Our top class was Ms. Pearson’s 2nd grade with 1,544 items. Her top student, Brayden Shrewsbury, brought in 1,336 cans all on his own. Brayden’s great-grandmother, Peggy Putnam, was a Mount Holly community leader who passed away recently. She worked at the CRO for over 30 years. Brayden wanted this can food drive to be extra special in memory of his great-grandmother. Brayden and all of our Rankin students and families worked hard to gather canned food and other nonperishable goods so we could support our school and our community.” Gaston Schools photos
