On Friday, March 17, just before 12:30 p.m., Kings Mountain Police and Cleveland County Emergency Management personnel responded to Moss Lake near 121 Sunshine Ln. in Cherryville, for a search and rescue of an individual that had entering the water, but had not resurfaced. Witnesses told investigators on scene that a black male had jumped off a pier and entered the water. Once in the water the black male began to struggle and soon fell beneath the water’s surface. Cleveland County Emergency Management Director Perry Davis contacted Charlotte Mecklenburg Fire
Department Dive Team to assist in the rescue. Around 3:30 p.m., rescue divers recovered the victim from the lake. The victim was transported to Atrium Health Care in Shelby, and was pronounced dead at 5:03 p.m. The victim has been identified as Jeremiah Roberts, 18, of Shelby.

Detectives from the Gastonia Police Department continue to investigate the March 7 attempted armed robbery of a convenience on S. New Hope Road. On March 15, investigators released surveillance video of the male suspect and his vehicle and ask the public for help identifying either the suspect, the owner of the vehicle, or the identity of a possible additional occupant of the vehicle.
On March 7, at approximately 2:10 a.m., GPD officers responded to the Circle K located at 2434 S. New Hope Road for the report of an attempted armed robbery that just occurred.
During the investigation, detectives determined that the suspect may have initially been a passenger in a vehicle that parked near the store and that the suspect entered the store wearing sunglasses and a mask covering his mouth and nose. The suspect approached a

The 285th session consisted of 237 law enforcement officers from 49 states and the District of Columbia. Nationally, fewer than one percent of officers can attend the program.
Recognized worldwide for its academic excellence, the FBI’s National Academy offers 10 weeks of advanced communication courses, leadership classes, and fitness challenges. Candidates must demonstrate proven records as professionals within their agencies to even be considered for selection into the program. On average, these officers have more than 20 years of law enforcement experience and typically serve in executive-level positions after returning to their respective agencies.
Since its inception in 1935, more than 54,100 public safety professionals have graduated from the

Assistant Chief Brogdon joined GPD in 2005, was
promoted to sergeant in 2013, captain in 2020, and assistant chief in 2021. She has served in several positions including patrol officer, community coordinator, grant manager, and coordinator of the Gaston County Gang Initiative, and as a detective specializing
in financial and electronic crimes. Since being promoted to sergeant in 2013 she has served as a patrol sergeant, a community coordinator sergeant, a Criminal Investigations Division sergeant, and as assistant commander of GPD’s Crisis Negotiations Team. She oversaw the department’s Traffic and Canine Units, LeadsOnline, Victim/Witness, and U-VISA programs, and served as commander of the GPD Tactical/ Mobile Field Force Team. Assistant Chief Brogdon is also a graduate of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Command College.
Assistant Chief Brogdon received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in business administration from Pfeiffer University. She also received North Carolina’s Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate. Brogdon is bilingual with fluency in Spanish and English.

marks the 100th anniversary of the Hord Mansion at 100 W. King Street in Kings Mountain. The building has been used as a library since 1947, but it was once the home the family of Dr. Jacob George Van Buren Hord. The family lived there from 1923 until it was sold in the 1940s.
In 1947, the property was gifted to the city of Kings Mountain as a memorial to Jacob Simri and Margaret Juletta Rudisill Mauney by their children for the expressed use as a library.

Using the power of the media, Publisher Haywood Lynch wrote article after article encouraging citizens to open a public library.
In the event the public library did not open in the second-story space do-
nated by Dr. Anthony, but it began operation instead on 15 February 1937 in a room in the building on Cherokee Street occupied as a temporary city hall. While citizens of Kings Mountain were advancing the library initiative in 1936, other city leaders were seeking federal funding for a new town hall. That support was secured and the plans of the new municipal building to occupy the site of the existing town hall in the 100 block of South Piedmont Avenue were in hand and approved by year’s end.
In January 1937 the town offices were relocated temporarily to the Webb building on Cherokee Street, the old town hall was taken down, and construction began on the new building on the eleventh. The scheduled opening of the public library on Monday afternoon, 15 February 1937, was announced on the front page of the Kings Mountain Herald on 11 February.
An account of the opening appeared under the headline, “Public Library Now Open,” in the weekly newspaper on 18 February 1937. Kings Mountain’s Public Library is now open, and everyone is invited to come by and get a book.
About 500 volumes are already on the shelves, and more are on the way. Temporary quarters are at the Town Hall. Mrs. Lois Young, District Supervisor, and Mrs. Jesse O’Shield, County Supervisor of WPA(,) were in Kings Mountain Monday and Tuesday for the opening. They instructed Miss Ida Davis, local Librarian, in the system of keeping the books.
The committee in charge of opening the library are deeply indebted to Mesdames Young and O’Shield for their generous co-operation, in making Kings Mountain’s Library possible. The Board of Trustees of the Library named this week to have supervision for the next twelve months are: Mrs. Hunter Neisler, Rev. W. M. Boyce, Mayor J. E. Herndon and Haywood E. Lynch. Articles on patronage of the library and the acquisition of new books continued to appear in the town’s weekly newspaper through the spring and early summer of 1937 as the new city hall neared completion.
The handsome Colonial-Revival style building, whose architect remains to be confirmed, was accepted by the city in mid-July 1937 and the several offices housed in the temporary municipal
building were relocated to the new Kings Mountain Town Hall in the last weeks of the month. The library was destined to remain in the Cherokee Street building for some time yet. Apparently the “completion” of the building had not included the finishing of rooms in the basement of the new building for the town library. The matter was discussed at the Town Council in August and September and the situation was explained in part in an article, “No Books From Library,” in the Kings Mountain Herald
on 16 September 1937.
Permanent quarters for the Kings Mountain Public Library, the Red Cross Office, and County Welfare Office are now under construction in basement of the new City Hall. Due to that carpenters will be working the balance of this week no books will be let out, but the library will be open to receive books that are due. Plans are now being made for the formal opening of the library in the new quarters shortly.
Meanwhile, on 26 August 1937, a status report on library patronage during its
first six months of operation appeared in the Kings Mountain Herald.
As of 24 August, the book collection totaled 1,350 volumes, the library had issued 1,068 membership cards for borrowing privileges, and a grand total of 9,620 books had been circulated. The library was open for four hours each afternoon, Monday through Friday, and six hours on Saturday.

The second largest bank failure in U.S. history occurred March 10, in Santa Clara, California. The Silicon Valley Bank failed after a bank run on its deposits. The Depart-
ment of Financial Protection and Innovation revoked its charter and transferred the business into receivership under the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
SVB is the country’s 16th largest bank, with $209 billion in assets and more than $175 billion in deposits.
A number of businesses had millions of dollars in the bank.
Roku had just under $500 million of its $1.9 billion dollars of cash assets in the bank.
Roblox, a video game company said 5 percent of its $3 billion in cash was held at SVB.
Toronto-based AcuityAds Holding had $55 million (U.S.) in SVB, and just $4.8 million (U.S.) elsewhere. That means more than 90 percent of the company’s deposits were held in SVB.
Aerospace manufacturer Rocket Lab held almost 8 percent, or approximately $38 million, of its total cash at the collapsed bank, it said in a recent Friday filing.
‘Crytpo’ lender BlockFi, which filed for
bankruptcy in November, disclosed it held $227 million with SVB in a bankruptcy filing last Friday. BlockFi said in November it had halted withdrawals after facing “significant exposure” to Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX exchange, as well as its sister hedge fund, Alameda.

On 17 May 1945 the Kings Mountain Herald published a short bulletin of a meeting on the matter. “Some 25 Kings Mountain citizens attended a meeting at the City Hall Tuesday night to discuss plans for expansion of facilities of the Kings Mountain public library. No action was taken with the exception that Mayor J. H. Thompson is to appoint a committee to investigate possibilities and make a recommendation.”
The need would be addressed by circumstance and the magnanimous gift of the Hord house by the children of Jacob Simri and Margaret Juletta Rudisill Mauney in memory of their parents, reflecting the remarkably close relationship of people and place that has always featured in the history of Kings Mountain.

Tommy’s reaction is nothing new. Favoritism has been around a long time. Isaac loved Esau best, but Rebekah loved Jacob (Genesis 25:28). First-century Jews associated with
other Jews, but not with Gentiles (Acts 10:28)
In our day, the sting of being shunned or excluded is still felt!
However, there is no place for partiality in the church! For “God is not one to show partiality” (Acts 10:34). He equally and fully welcomes all who repent of sin and trust in Jesus Christ. The gospel of Jesus Christ offers forgiveness for all, acceptance for all, and entrance into the family of God for all.
That’s why James says, “Do not hold your faith in our glorious Lord Jesus
Christ with an attitude of personal favoritism” (James 2:1).
And that’s why he exposed this wrong practice in the early church–seating one group (the rich) in the best seats and another group (the poor) on the floor or having to stand (James 2:2–4)
In our churches, we may do well in how we seat people, but what about how we treat people? Do we welcome guests coming through our doors? Do we speak to “new people” on nearby pews? Do we share our names or learn their names?
In short, do we treat others the way we want to be treated when visiting another church?
In my seminary days as a class assignment, my wife-to-be and I visited several churches. More than once, we had the memorable experience of being surrounded by worshippers, who were singing to the Lord energetically and greeting one another enthusiastically, while totally ignoring us!
To borrow a phrase from James— “My brethren, these things ought not be this way!”
It ought to be like the
experience of church members who have said, “I remember my first visit to church and how an usher welcomed me. He’s one of the reasons why I joined the church.” Or “We felt at home from the start. People made us feel so welcome.”
So as we sing “Brethren we have met to worship and adore the Lord our King,” let us also welcome all warmly and fulfill the royal law, the law of our King, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (James 2:8).

Kings Mountain National Military Park announced today, a series of prescribed burns will be conducted within the park boundaries through the end of May. Locations to be burned are as follows:
• North Central burn unit
– 385 ac -Combines Swale and Midway burn units. Swale unit is bordered to the west by Yorkville/Shelbyville Road, Midway burn unit to the east and to the south by the Clarks Creek, the Clarks Creek Trail, and the Battlefield burn unit.
The Midway unit borders East line burn unit to the west in the park’s northeast boundary of the park. Unit is bound to the south by the Clarks Creek and the Clarks Creek Trail and to the west of Midway by the Swale burn unit.
• Howser –31 ac- Located near the Northwest
boundary of the park, southwest of Rock House Road, and North of the Stonehouse Branch. Unit is contained by roads and natural boundaries. Northern boundary of this unit is Kings Creek. Rock House Road and the power line make up the eastern boundary. Stonehouse Branch makes up the southern boundary. Sections of Dellingham Rd. and Howser House Rd. form the western boundary.
• Battlefield –175 ac-Located primarily behind the visitor center. The northern boundary of this unit is Colonial Road which branches south onto Yorkville Shelbyville Road. The trail system north from the visitor center serves as part of the Eastern Boundary. Highway 216 (Main Park Drive) comprises the remainder of the eastern, southern, and western boundaries.
• Mineshaft – 39 acNorthcentral portion of the park along Main Park Drive
and the northern boundary. Unit is contained by an unnamed stream which has significant water flow sufficient to contain the fire. Unit is bound to the northeast by the Huffman Hill unit. The Park boundary (Duke Power Right-of-Way) serves as the northwest border of the unit. Private lands are adjacent to this right-of way, access has been granted to utilize the private property owners gate to access this portion of the unit with UTV’s and engine.
Wildland fire crews are working to prepare these units for safe and effective prescribed burns, conducted in accordance with the approved fire management plan and as weather conditions allow throughout the spring season. Surrounding communities may expect minimal smoke and visibility impacts during the burns. Some access to trails and grounds within the burn areas may be temporarily restricted during burn activ-
The South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust released the schedule of events for the Camden Burials, April 20–22, for the reinterment of the remains of fourteen Revolutionary War soldiers excavated in the fall of 2022.
“Honoring these heroes in a respectful manner and ensuring the permanent protection of their remains is the mission of this effort,” commented Doug Bostick, CEO, South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust. “Over a period of three days, the public will have numerous opportunities to participate in the ceremonies and pay their respects.”
The weekend of events begins on Thursday, April 20, as the remains of the fourteen Revolutionary War soldiers will be escorted back to Camden. The public is invited to honor these soldiers by assembling on the procession route.
The remains of the soldiers will lie in repose at the Kershaw Cornwallis House. The public is invited to pay their respects starting Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. through midnight Friday. Thursday evening from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., the Revolutionary War Visitor Center will host a panel discussion with Dr. Mattie Atwell, James Legg, Dr. Steven
Smith, and Dr. Bill Stevens about the project and what the forensic and archaeological study has revealed.
On Friday, April 21, reenactors will be assembled to honor the fourteen soldiers at a living history camp at Historic Camden. From 10 p.m. to 8 p.m. the public is invited to visit the camp and interact with the reenactors. On Friday evening, the heralded US Army Old Guard will offer a public concert and a narrated demonstration. The event is free; however, prior registration is required.
Beginning early Saturday morning, April 22, the funeral cortege will leave Historic Camden and make its way to Bethesda Presbyterian Church. The public is invited to watch the cortege along Broad Street and follow the procession to the church. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM outdoors at Bethesda Presbyterian Church. At 3:00 P.M. the Burial Honors Ceremony will commence at the Camden Battlefield. The battlefield ceremony is open to the public, but due to space limitations prior online registration is required.
The Camden Burials Project is the result of a significant historic discovery at the Revolutionary War Camden Battlefield. The Trust, acting on behalf
of Historic Camden Foundation, contracted with the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of South Carolina to excavate a number of bodies of Revolutionary War soldiers killed in the August 16, 1780 Battle of Camden.
A team of archaeologists from the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, along with biological anthropologists from the Richland County Coroner’s office and the University of South Carolina unearthed the skeletal remains and accompanying artifacts of 14 Revolutionary War soldiers.
“These young men demonstrated their allegiance in an intense battle for liberty. They are truly America’s first veterans,” said Doug Bostick, CEO, South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust. “We have a responsibility to honor their sacrifice by ensuring their remains are protected in perpetuity and their stories of bravery are shared.”
Based on preliminary field examinations, the team believes that twelve individuals are Patriot Continental soldiers from either Maryland or Delaware, one is likely a North Carolina Loyalist, and one served with the British 71st Regiment of Foot, Fraser’s Highlanders.
Bostick continued, “When these young men marched into the darkness on that summer night in 1780, they did so out of love for their country despite the consequences that may befall them. Our intent is to lay them to rest with the respect and honor they earned more than two centuries ago.”
The City of Camden and Kershaw County have partnered closely in the planning for the weekend of events. “The City of Camden is deeply honored to host this once in a lifetime event,” remarked Alfred Mae Drakeford, mayor, Camden. “We very much appreciate all that Doug Bostick and his SCBPT team are undertaking to honor our Revolutionary War heroes in such a moving and respectful manner.”

4 chicken breasts, stewed, save broth, cut in bite-size pieces. Place in 8x12x2 baking dish
Mix:
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can cream of mushroom soup
¼ cup milk
Pour over chicken and add 2 tablespoons margarine. Mix 2 cups chicken broth with 1 pkg. stuffing mix. Spoon over chicken mixture. Brown in oven 400 to 4 25 degrees for 30 minutes.

Reserve ½ cup liquid from Veg All. Mix all together in casserole. Add ½ cup cheese nip crackers, crushed to top of casserole. Melt 1 stick butter and pour on top. Bake 20 minutes at 400 degrees.

The program is funded and run by the U.S. Department of Defense and is critical in our state, as North Carolina is home to the fourth largest military presence in the nation. Licensed child care programs can now participate in MCCYN-PLUS based on their rating in the state’s quality rating and improvement program.
This is an expansion of the existing Military Child Care in Your Neighborhood, which requires national accreditation from the U.S. Department of Defense. Under the new PLUS initiative, child care programs in North Carolina can participate if they have a license rated 3 stars or higher. MCCYN-PLUS provides a significant opportunity to increase the number of centers and family child care homes participating in the military child care fee assistance program and increases the number of quality child care options for military families.

Weaver no-hits Huss in opener Big start keys Mountaineers over Ashbrook
Kings Mountain High’s women’s softball team opened its Big South Conference season last week with big victories over Gaston County foes Hunter Huss 21-1 and Ashbrook 21-0.
Senior Kali Weaver pitched a no-hitter in the win over Hunter Huss, striking out 12 of the 17 batters she faced. She walked two.
Reynolds led the Lady Mountaineers at the plate with 2-for-2 and four runs batted in. Weaver, Desiree Green, Anna Wooten and Paige Fleming also had two hits. Greene went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in against Ashbrook. Weaver and Reynolds had two hits apiece and Patrick one.
Anna Wooten went 2 2/3 innings on the mound. She gave up two hits and struck out seven.
Kings Mountain is scheduled to go to Forestview Friday for a 6 p.m. game and will return home Tuesday at 6 to host the South Point Lady Red Raiders.

Mountaineer track teams open season with sweep of Cleveland, Gaston teams
Despite cold weather, nine area track and field teams had a very competitive meet at Kings Mountain’s John Gamble Stadium last Tuesday.
Kings Mountain batted around in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead and rolled to a 10-0, five-inning victory over the Ashbrook Green Wave in their Big South 3A Conference opener on a bitterly cold Tuesday night at KM’s Lancaster Field.
Jason Melton walked to lead off the bottom of the first, and after a passed ball moved him to second Caleb Broome doubled to right center to plate Melton and the rout was on. The Mountaineers went on to score four more runs as Zane Brockman walked and Cole Irby followed with a hit. Brayden Patrick, who hit by a pitch, tallied the fifth run on a wild pitch.
Kings Mountain added three more runs in the second on a hit by Broome and several wild pitches, hit batsmen and walks.
The Mountaineers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule. Wyatt Davis and Melton drew backto-back walks and Broome was hit by a pitch before Brockman and Irby singled to get both teams out of the cold.

hits and two RBIs apiece to lead the five-hit KM attack. Ashbrook pitchers issued nine bases on balls.

“Our players who are not starters are getting an opportunity to play matches for the experience,” Coach Guy said. “The number of extra matches depends on how many players the opponents have. With a large team (27 players) it is impossible for

The Cleveland Community College Baseball team won a mid-week shootout versus nationally ranked Florence-Darlington Technical College, 12-8, on Wednesday at Yeti Athletics Park. The Stingers were ranked #7 in the NJCAA Division I national rankings entering the week of March 13.

Brushing scams occur when a person receives a package from a business containing various items that they never ordered. The packages will be addressed to your residence, but usually do not have a return address or have the return address of a retailer. The scammer typically orders the merchandise using a third-party seller like Amazon or eBay. Their aim is to pose as a verified buyer of that product so they can post a fake positive review online to boost their product rating and popularity.
Although this type of scam seems victimless, it likely means that your personal information has been leaked and is available somewhere online. This information may be your name, address, or phone number. While you may not face any immediate harm from a “brushing” scam, your leaked personal information could set you up for another type of scam or identity theft in the future.
If you receive a package that you did not order yourself, follow these guidelines to protect yourself:
• Notify the retailer. Most
businesses encourage you to report fraudulent activity for security purposes. You should let them know that you received a package based on a fraudulent purchase so that they can take the appropriate steps to prevent it from happening again.
• Do not send money for an unsolicited package. Contact the retailer directly and ask whether they are willing to pay for the return to them or let you keep the product at no cost to you. You should not pay for any return.
• Change your passwords. It is very likely that your personal information has been compromised. You should immediately update your security settings and passwords for accounts you may have with various retailers.
• Monitor your accounts. Keep an eye on your bank statements and credit reports to be sure that your more sensitive personal information has not been leaked. Consider putting a free security freeze in place as well – learn more at www.ncdoj.gov/securityfreeze.

I think of all the hunters who are enjoying the spoils of victory right now. They are making some of the best chili or spaghetti sauce with the ground deer from their freezer. Others are slicing the tenderloin for either a breakfast biscuit or an evening meal. And there’s nothing better than a crockpot full of onions and potatoes slow cooking with a venison ham. My mouth is watering as I type. Not only do we get to enjoy telling the stories of a successful solo harvest, but the results will bring some joyful refreshment for many others and for many months later. Pardon the pun, but I’ve been chewing on the this thought for several days now; the thought of how a seemingly devastating defeat or even a death brings about an even greater fruitfulness.
As most of you know, I believe nature is not by accident. I don’t believe God created something without purpose. I believe the Apostle Paul when he said that creation shows us God’s invisible qualities, his eternal power, and his divine nature. That is, creation is a compass that points us to God. Now fast-forward to me and my deer. My deer died, but in dying became the source of joy for many others. And to this I am reminded of so many illustrations in the Bible about things like the crushing of grapes for wine, being crucified with Christ, and even Jesus’ prophecy concerning his crucifixion. “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. Perrigo Company plc is issuing a voluntary recall of certain
lots of Gerber® Good Start® SootheProTM Powdered Infant Formula in the U.S., that were manufactured at the Company’s Gateway Eau Claire, Wisconsin manufacturing facility from January 02, 2023 to January 18, 2023. This product is being recalled out of an abundance of caution due to the potential presence of Cronobacter sakazakii.

Cronobacter sakazakii is a bacteria commonly found in the environment. One consumer told BBB, “I received two emails from ‘COVID-19 Tests’ indicating that the Biden administration must cover at-home COVID testing kits every month for free. I was asked for personal data, including my address, date of birth, and Medicare card number. When it came time to determine if I qualified, the site would no longer work. I immediately became suspicious. I am afraid I was scammed into providing information that can be used to open accounts in my name.”
How to avoid COVID-19 test scams:
• Want a test? Get one through official sources. Speak with your local pharmacist about purchasing a test or visit Covid.gov/tests to see if your household qualifies for free at-home tests from the government. The FDA also has a list of authorized athome COVID-19 diagnostic tests you can review.
• Do your research. Scammers may pressure you to hand over your personal information, claiming that you’ll lose your chance to
get free tests if you don’t act now. Refrain from giving in to high-pressure tactics; constantly research before you agree to anything. In addition, review this warning from the FDA.
• Understand all your testing options. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a detailed guide to testing for COVID-19. Knowing what tests are available and how to get them will give you the upper hand should you be targeted by a scammer.
• Never share your personal information with strangers. Only make purchases and share your personal information with people and companies you know and trust. Be wary of anyone approaching you with unsolicited offers, whether over the phone or otherwise. If you suspect your personal information has been compromised, report it to identitytheft.gov.
• Don’t click on links in text messages or emails from strangers. Scammers often send links to their victims as a part of phishing scams. Such links might send you to an imitation website where scammers try to collect your personal information, or they could download malware onto your computer or mobile device, which will also put you at risk for identity theft.

“Anything that you would normally do in an in-patient setting, you can do here,” he adds. “We can get an EKG if needed; we can draw labs; we can give basically any medication that you would normally give in a hospital setting.”
“We give the patients a chance to come home, and we treat them in their home just like they would be in the hospital,” says fellow Atrium Health community paramedic John Turner.
“We see them twice a day. They get to talk to a doctor every day through a video conference call. They also have a nurse, 24/7 and it's just a great opportunity for
them to get the care that they need at home.”
"At first, I thought, how am I going to know what to do? What all to do, you know, with the medicines and the vitals and all that,” says patient Gena Kinsey. “But it's very simple and they help you in any way that they can. If anything happened, they're coming out to check on me, or I can make a phone call to my nurse any time. You know you're being taken care of, just like you were in the hospital. And, it's easy to do.”
“I'm glad to be able to be home,” says Atrium Health hospital at home patient James McGee. “I feel more comfortable here than I would there and don't get woke up as much.”
He also notes that, as someone who lives in a rural community – roughly 30 miles from the nearest hospital, the added convenience of receiving his care at home makes a big difference for him and his family.
“My son doesn’t get off until 6 or 7 o’clock at night,” McGee adds. “By the time he gets off, he can’t come see me (in the hospital). My wife doesn’t like to drive in traffic, so she isn’t out on the road driving. That means a lot to me. Plus, we’re on a fixed income, so it also saves money on gas.”
