Two GFWC NC Kings Mountain’s Clubwomen, Betty Sue Morris and Valerie Boyd were honored by the club. The organization works locally and nationally to bring about positive change with an unwavering dedication to community improvement through volunteer service.

Valerie Boyd, a retired educator, was selected as Kings Mountain Woman's Club Woman of the Year. Valerie gives of her time, talents, interest organization efforts and active participates to render outstanding service through the KM Club, She is a hard worker that strives to meet the goals and purposes of the organization, She was invited to join the club through member Ann Bennett. Valerie has and continues to use her talents in working with the program committees,

serving as an officer, and supporting the activities of the club. Through the years she has seen the Club grow, and continues to grow, and be a service to the community under the leadership of President Denise Cobb, Her passion for service to others and to involvement carries over into her community where she is an active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, serving as a ministry leader, a member of the Davidson Association and the formed Davidson Resource Center Board, Incorporated, where

she has served in many of the leadership roles and is currently the chair of committee, and serves on the Education Committee of the Cleveland County Arts Council.

Bonita Lowe has always been drawn to art. As a young child she watched her father draw and paint, and he inspired her artistic curiosity. Mostly self-taught, she has pursued studies in life-drawing, design and painting which expanded her knowledge greatly. Another person who influenced Bonita was AB Mauney Snow, the founder of Southern Arts Society. AB wanted to retire from working as a colorist in the textile industry at Dicey Mills and saw the potential in Bonita’s work. Bonita then took over for AB at Dicey and worked there for 20 years before retiring herself.

N ow Bonita lives in Mount Holly where she works in her home studio. Her primary medium is graphite pencil, which she uses to create detailed, highly realistic See MUSIC, Page 7A

Linda Baity Bennett, 87, passed away on February 27, 2023.

She was born in Kings Mountain, NC. Linda was

the beloved daughter of the late Bonnie Eloise Early Baity and the late Arthur P. Baity, Sr.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack Donald Bennett; brother, Arthur P. Baity, Jr. and brother David (Dave) Jake Baity.

She is survived by her sister, Valerie Coleman (Don) and sister Deborah Austin (Rod) and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews. A memorial service will be held later in the summer at a location to be determined.

Linda was a very special loving and caring person and will be terribly missed by all those who loved her. The sparkle of life, light, humor and joy that was Linda and that she found in everyday life has been dimmed for those left behind. The family’s loss is immeasurable.

NC Governor and Attorney General file amicus brief in partisan gerrymandering case

Governor Roy Cooper and Attorney General Josh Stein filed an amicus brief on Friday, March 3, in the partisan gerrymandering case currently before the North Carolina Supreme Court for a rehearing after the Court’s composition changed in January. The brief urges the Court to leave in place its rulings from February and December 2022, which correctly recognized that North Carolina’s constitution guarantees the right to vote on equal terms and that electoral maps adopted by Republican legislators in 2021 are unconstitutional partisan gerrymanders. The newly constituted Supreme Court agreed to rehear the case in February at the request of Republican legislative leaders.

CCSO arrests three on drug charges in Grover

Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office conducted a drug search warrant at 717 Lavender Road on March 1. The execution of the search warrant steamed from numerous drug complaints from concerned citizens in the community which sparked a drug investigation consisting of surveillance and undercover operations.

The results of the search warrant were three individuals arrested, 28 grams of Methamphetamine and 19 Ecstasy pills seized. Obviously, this isn’t our largest seizure, but to us, putting this repeat offender behind bars again and knowing our communities are safer is considered a success by us.

The Sheriff’s Office will continue to make drug in-

vestigations a high priority, Sheriff Alan Norman said.

“Statistics have shown for years that drug use leads to other crimes, in particular breaking and entering and larcenies, where users have to steal to fund their habit.”

“The violence associated with drug dealing is also a huge concern of mine, and those dealers who possess guns during drug transactions will be a very high priority.” The Sheriff’s Office takes complaints of drug sales very seriously, Norman said, and requests that anyone with information on drug dealers in their neighborhood contact the Vice/Narcotics Division at 704-484-4987.

Governor Cooper and Attorney General Stein’s brief explains that granting Republican legislators’ request to overturn the Court’s recent decisions would be unprecedented in the Court’s history, contrary to the Court’s rules, and undermine the stability and legitimacy of the rule of law. The brief explains that “our State’s elected representatives cannot be allowed to entrench themselves in power by manipulating district lines to insulate themselves from popular will.” The Supreme Court’s 2022 decisions “ensure that partisan gerrymandering does not fatally undermine the power of North Carolinians to govern themselves.”

Last week, Cleveland County Sheriff’s deputies were doing an extra patrol for a citizen at their property. While there, the deputies located a male that was not supposed to be on the property.

The male was identified as Wilson Wilson Wilson. (His legal name.) Wilson

was in possession of methamphetamine and an arrest occurred. He resisted arrest but was subsequently taken into custody.

Councilman Allen completes advanced leadership training

Kings Mountain City Council Member David Alen successfully completed the Advanced Leadership Corps (ALC) training offered annually to select local elected officials by the School of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

ALC is an intensive leadership development program designed by the School’s Center for Public Leadership and Governance. The weeklong residential program is a dynamic experience that helps participants learn about their own leadership styles, inspire others to work toward a shared vi-

sion, and gain insights into how to work together to build better relationships and achieve far-reaching results. More than 185 local elected leaders from across North Carolina have completed this selective program since its

inception.

Councilman Allen shared his thoughts on the ALC training, “The opportunity gained through this Academy not only grew my leadership skills, but also allowed me to connect with leaders from all over the state. This network will afford me a connection with the knowledge of many great leaders to help Kings Mountain.”

Generous financial support from North Carolina Association of County Commissioners allows elected officials from across the state to attend with only modest cost to the local unit of government.

Pieces of Kings Mountain History

If you have lived in Kings Mountain for any time, you are surely familiar with the Hord Mansion, a building that has been used as the city’s library. It was once the home of Dr. Jacob George Van Buren Hord and his family from 1923 until 1947.

Dr. Hord died in 1930 and had young children at the time. His wife and children occupied the home until after the mother’s death in 1940.

In 1947, the property was gifted to the city of Kings Mountain as a memorial to Jacob Simri and Margaret Juletta Rudisill Mauney by their children for the expressed use as a library.

The following information comes from the application to place Jacob S. Mauney Memorial Library and Teacher’s Home on the National Historic Register. Haywood Lynch worked tirelessly from 1935 until 1947 to see that there was a library in Kings Mountain. He partnered with likeminded people to see that this happened. Other citizens joined in eventually laid the groundwork for Mauney Memorial Library. While I didn’t do this

research, I thought it interesting enough to share the story using excerpts from the application regarding how the library itself came to be, written in three parts. If you would like to read the entire application submitted by Davyd Ford, it is online at https://files.nc.gov/ncdcr/ nr/CL1457.pdf. Using the power of the media, Lynch wrote article after article encouraging citizens to open a public library.

The genesis of the movement for a public library in Kings Mountain, the second such municipal library in Cleveland County, which has been known as the Mauney Memorial Library and located in its present location since 1947, lies in the efforts of Haywood Eugene Lynch (19091983).

Mr. Lynch, a native of Goldsboro, Wayne County, North Carolina, a graduate of Duke University, and a journalist formerly on the staff of the Goldsboro News-Argus, came to Kings Mountain in 1934. In that year he executed a lease arrangement for the operation of the Kings Mountain Herald, the town’s weekly newspaper, with Guilford Garfield Page (18831949), its long-time owner and former editor.

Lynch oversaw publication of the first issue

of the newspaper as its editor on 17 January 1935. During the decade he owned and edited the newspaper, he utilized his role as editor of the Kings Mountain Herald to encourage every effort for civic, social, and commercial improvement in Kings Mountain.

This advocacy was especially important in the 1930s when he urged town leaders to seek and provide the necessary matching support for a series of projects funded through several Federal works programs including a new town hall, a high school gymnasium, a new post office, and important improvements to the transportation infrastructure.

Mr. Lynch first exercised his advocacy in an editorial, “A City Public Library,” published in the Kings Mountain Herald on 7 February 1935. “We would like to see in our town a public library. A place where readers of all ages may get reading material of the better kinds. Maybe some of the patriotic citizens would like to donate some books that they now have. A library could be started on a very small scale and gradually built up. New volumes could be added from time to time. The biggest cost would be the salary of the librarian, which could be part time work at first.

Putting his money where his mouth was, Lynch offered that The Herald would like to be the first to make a donation to Kings Mountain Public Library. Two weeks later, on 21 February 1935, he published a second editorial, “More About Public Library.”

Some weeks ago, the Herald carried an editorial about a public library for the town of Kings Mountain. The reaction on the part of the public has been gratifying.

The Herald would like to see some active group of people or organization get together and formulate definite plans for this public enterprise.

started at relatively small cost. There is no better way to spend leisure time than reading some good book or current magazine. America’s wars – Who are the real winners?

America was involved in Vietnam for 20 years. Our presence started small but by 1965 had significantly escalated. As many as 3.1 million troops saw combat and at least 58,300 were killed. We spent over $120 billion from 1965 to 1973 which led to an oil crisis and rampant inflation. Here are my questions: Are you better off today because America fought in Vietnam? Are you safer?

America spent over $2 trillion fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then, we hurried and pulled out of Afghanistan, leaving hundreds of millions of dollars in vehicles, buildings, bases, and weapons to be used against us and our friends by the Taliban. The country is now in shambles. Girls are not allowed to go to school beyond the sixth grade. Women are treated horribly by the Taliban. What did we do to help Afghanistan? Are they better off now? Are we better off for our 13 years in that country? We invaded Iraq. We lost over 15,000 active service members and con-

When do we start fighting in Taiwan? China wants to control Taiwan. Taiwan is rich in resources and technology. Like Russia wanting Ukraine because of its proximity and resources, China figures it just makes sense for them to control neighboring Taiwan.

China is reportedly on the verge, if not already sending military arms to Russia. As America depletes our own defense stockpile of missiles, tanks and more, China knows we will have less to send to Taiwan. We have recently sent 200 soldiers to Taiwan and more will be going. It is scary to ponder how many more will be going in the next year or two.

The Military Industrial Complex will continue to make hundreds of millions of dollars with no end in sight. Manufacturers of mass weapons used in war have no end to their financial gains. Politicians who own stock in these massive companies only stand to get richer and richer. How many thousands of shares of stock in these companies do our long-term Senators and Representatives own? Stopping or slowing our military aggressions around the globe would mean their stock would go down and their massive financial fortunes would be diminished.

Politicians should not be allowed to buy stock while in office. Before running for a political office, they should be required to cash their stock out so they are not financially persuaded to promote the success of certain industries. We don’t want Ukraine to fall to Russia or Taiwan to China. However, what will our country have left to fight with after we have spent billions of dollars defending them? If your livelihood comes from investments in the massive military weapon sales industries, then you are probably spending most of your time counting your money.

His next editorial, “Room For Library,” published on 11 July 1935, reflected the ongoing efforts of city leaders to secure federal public-works funding to construct a new city hall for Kings Mountain. “We notice by our favorite paper that Kings Mountain is going to erect a new city hall building. We would like to urge, and have our many readers, to urge the city fathers to include a room in this new building for our city library.” So certain of this was he, Lynch state, “Because sooner or later Kings Mountain is going to be able to boast of a city library, so now is the time to make plans where it shall be housed.”

In another editorial, “Our Town Library,” published on 3 October 1935, Mr. Lynch called on town residents to provide financial support for a library. Months passed, with apparently little movement, until Haywood Lynch penned another editorial, “A Reminder,” that was published on 2 January 1936. The Editor of the Herald has not forgotten the need of a Library in the Best Town In The State. We have been writing for almost a year now about a library for Kings Mountain. Lots of people have stopped us to remark that they are wholeheartedly in favor of a library for Kings Mountain. We need the LIBRARY. The people want a LIBRARY. There is no reason why we should not have a Library. The Herald will offer next week a plan whereby Kings Mountain can have a Library without a great cost to anyone. Watch for it.”

called for one out of every 100 of King’s Mountain’s 8,000 citizens to contribute $5 each to raise $400 for books, shelving, and equipment. He proposed housing the library in a room in the town hall on Piedmont Street recently vacated by Mrs. Mae Hamrick, who was in charge of federally funded local relief work.

He next called on the city government to provide funding to employ a librarian. “The plan outlined above” he noted, “will not give Kings Mountain a big, elaborate Public Library, but it will be a start.” He then offered the offices of the Herald as a collection agency for donations.

Under the headline “Public Library Meeting Held” the Kings Mountain Herald informed its readers on 19 March 1936 of a meeting of representatives of local civic and professional groups on 16 March at which Mr. Lynch was elected general chairman and a series of four resolutions in support of a public library were adopted.

Among those present, representing the Junior Woman’s Club, was Mrs. Samuel Aubrey (Katharine Shenk) Mauney, the wife of the eldest son of Jacob Augustus Mauney (18741952) who, in turn, was the eldest son of Jacob Simri Mauney.3 Articles in the Kings Mountain Herald published through the spring and early summer of 1936 reported gifts to the library and a gathering momentum.

These culminated in two important articles published in July 1936, both under front-page headlines. The first, appearing on 2 July under “Town Appropriates Funds For Library,” announced the decision by the Town Council to appropriate “$25 per month for the maintenance of a public library here providing the citizens of Kings Mountain would raise the necessary funds to start the library.”

The second article appeared on 16 July under the headline “Location For Public Library Secured.” Day by day the assurance that Kings Mountain will have a Public Library is becoming more secure. This week a location for the library has been selected and approved. Dr. J. E. Anthony, (a) public spirited citizen(,) has donated the use of a room over Keeter’s Department Store. The room is to be used temporarily until space can be had in the new Town Hall which is hoped that will be built soon. The room adjoins the law office of E. A. Harrill. The place selected is centrally located and will be accessible to everyone.

A third critical step was to gain the support of the North Carolina Library Commission. This advance was announced in the newspaper on 8 October 1936. Marjorie Beal, Secretary and Director of the North Carolina Library Commission, of Raleigh, made a trip to Kings Mountain last week to confer with those interested in having a Public Library here.

She offered the services of her office in selecting the books, setting up the proper United States system. She also said that a Librarian could be secured from W. P. A. or N. Y. A. and that shelves, desk and other equipment could be secured through Federal agencies. Meanwhile, cash contributions and book donations for the library continued. Fundraising, which had reached $284.80 in early November, accelerated when Mrs. Hunter Ramseur (Anne Lutz) Neisler (1909-1982) became finance chairman of the library drive. On Christmas eve 1936 the newspaper reported donations had nearly doubled to $543.27, exceeding the goal of $500 for book purchases. (To be continued March 15)

Enduring Various Trials

James begins workout session #1 for our Christian faith with a perplexing imperative— “count it all joy when you encounter various trials” (James 1:2).

I’m not naturally happy about troubles. How about you? Groaning not gladness, complaining not happiness typically mark our immediate reactions. I find myself exclaiming “Oh, brother!” not “Oh, boy!”

So, what does James know

that we need to know? He gives us three vital links to make.

Link 1 – Trials test our faith.

James equates trials with “the testing of your faith” (James 1:3), Troubles make our faith genuine, like fire makes gold pure. And that process can be painful and stressful. Peter rightly says, “You have been distressed by various trials” (1 Peter 1:6)

Imagine the distress Joseph felt as iron chains fettered his feet. Imprisoned unjustly. Accused falsely. Enslaved wrongly. Treated harshly. Though the Lord had told Joseph he would one day rule, for 13 years “the word of the Lord tested him” (Genesis 37:8; Psalm 105:19).

God tests us too—in many

ways! The next link helps us understand why.

Link 2 – Tests produce endurance. “Knowing that,” says James, “the testing of your faith produces endurance” (James 1:3). Troubles build up our perseverance muscles.

And Christians with genuine faith endure to the end! They aim to say as Paul, “I have finished the course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). They “run with endurance the race” set before them (Hebrews 12:2) At times, we may give out, but we don’t give up! We may wear down, but we don’t walk out!

Where do we find strength to endure as Christians? By looking unto Jesus. “Consider Him who

has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (Heb 12:3).

But why endure and not lose heart? James makes yet another link.

Link 3 – Endurance produces character. James says, “Let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete lacking in nothing” (James 1:4)

Endurance is not an end, but the means to this end—perfect and complete character. The righteous and holy character of Jesus Christ.

“Preacher,” you may reply, “Nobody’s perfect this side of heaven—except Jesus.” And

you’re right! Yet God’s purpose for us is to “ be conformed to the image of His Son” (Romans 8:29)

And when Jesus appears “we shall be like Him” (1 John 3:2) We “shall be revealed with Him in glory” (Colossians 3:4). What a destiny!

Until then, let’s keep in mind these three links for “counting it all joy” in trials. And let’s keep in mind (and even say) these two words.

I learned them from preacher Manley Beasley. For years, they have helped me go through trials—HEAVENLY SANDPAPER!

drawings. Primarily focusing on portraits of her favorite people, she also has drawn animals, structures and even an airplane.

Bonita’s drawings are featured in an exhibit at Southern Arts Society in Kings Mountain now through April 22. "It's All About the Music" showcases many of Bonita’s favorites in the music industry. Among the musicians/singers portrayed in the exhibit are members of the Allman Brothers Band, Gregg Allman, Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, and Tom Petty to name a few. There are 24 portraits in the exhibit.

What draws Bonita to certain portraits? “First of all, my love for music, and my gratitude to the people who make it happen. I feel that every face tells its own unique story, and my goal in creating a portrait is to try to bring a little of that story to life. Some people have more stories to tell than others, and because of the lives they lead, musicians are among them.”

The public is invited to meet Bonita Lowe at a reception Saturday March 11, from 6 - 8 p.m. at Southern Arts Society. This event is free, and dress is casual. Bonita’s framed original portraits are available for sale, along with prints of her work. Bonita has artwork displayed in homes across the United States and the United Kingdom.

Also on view - works by AB Mauney Snow in the Founders Gallery. In 1984 Snow invited friends and newcomers to start an art organization to educate and support local artists. The name Southern Arts Society (SASi)was chosen to be inclusive of all artists in the region. Snow died in 2003, just as SASi found a permanent home in the old Southern Railway Depot. Though she began painting later in life, Snow was a prolific painter.

Bishop named Dean of Dover Library

Gardner-Webb University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Karen Aubrey has announced the promotion of Dr. Natalie Edwards Bishop to dean of Dover Library. Bishop currently serves as associate dean and University archivist.

“Dr. Bishop brings a determination to increase usage of the library, build partnerships, and make sure our library is seen as a vital heart of the campus,” Aubrey affirmed. “She has a willingness to take a fresh look at Dover and move us to the next level.”

Bishop follows a practical approach to library administration and leadership. Her focus will be on delivering high-impact services to the Gardner-Webb community that align with the academic curriculum and University Strategic Plan.

“The role of libraries in higher education has shifted over the course of my career,” Bishop noted. “Libraries should no longer be dark and dusty repositories of things—rather, modern libraries should be an active hub of student learning and community engagement. 4 cups cooked sweet potatoes

1 cup sugar

4 eggs

¾ cup milk

1 T. vanilla

¾ melted butter

Mash the potatoes until creamy. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix. Sprinkle topping over potatoes. Bake uncovered at 350 for 30 minutes. Will serve 10 to 12 people generously.

Bishop came to Gardner-Webb in 2007 as instruction librarian and began serving as University archivist in 2010. In this position, she has helped leverage the archive collection for teaching, scholarship, and fundraising. A key focus of her preservation strategy is digitization projects, such as the Fay Webb Gardner Collection and Kings Mountain Baptist Association Collection,

which allow the library to expose historic collections to a broader audience.

Through partnerships and collaborative exhibits with local museums, Dover Library is utilizing its collections for education and outreach in an innovative way.

Bishop earned a Doctor of Education in curriculum and instruction from GWU, a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Bachelor of Arts in history from Wingate (N.C.) University.

She grew up in Marshville, N.C., but has deep roots in Cleveland County, N.C., through her mother’s family. Bishop and her husband, Stephen, and their son, Thomas, live in Patterson Springs, N.C., in the house built by her great-great-grandparents. The Bishops also operate the White House Honeybee Farm, a tradition that also goes back to her great-grandfather. Her grandparents are their nextdoor neighbors.

1 cup uncooked rice

1 can cream of celery soup

1 can cream of chicken soup

1 ½ cups water

Chicken pieces to serve

6 people

Salt and pepper to taste

½ pkg. dry onion soup mix

Grease 9x13 baking dish and place rice in the bottom. Combine cream soups and water. Pour half of the soup mixture over rice and let stand a few minutes. Place chicken over rice. Add salt and pepper and remaining sop mixture. Top with dry onion soup. Cover with foil and bake at 350 for 1 ½ - two hours. Serves 6.

Cream butter, shortening and sugar until light. Add eggs one at a time. Blend dry ingredients and add alternately. Blend dry ingredients and add alternately with milk and vanilla. Pour batter into greased and floured tube pan. Bake 325 for 1 ¾ to 2 hours.

Read Across America Week at North Elementary School

North Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Week February 27-March 3. Students and staff dressed up to match different book themes.

Several guest readers also came to school to read to the students. Readers included former North students, the fire department, police officer, GWU Ladies Basketball Players, Kings Mountain High School football players, and other community partners. Al Conklin from WBTV and Chris Mulcahy from WCNC were our two "famous" guest readers that visited. Students enjoyed meeting different people in the community.

All the readers also talked with the students about the importance of doing their best in school and that reading will always be a major part of their lives.

Administration, teachers, staff, and students had a great time during Read Across America Week.

5-time SC state champion coach Strait Herron named new coach of the KM Mountaineers

Kings Mountain High School last week chose one of the winningest football coaches in South Carolina to keep a championship program led for the past 14 years under Coach Greg Lloyd moving forward. Coach Lloyd announced his resignation several weeks ago after rolling up 134 wins, more than double that of any previous Mountaineer mentor.

Strait Herron, who won five state championships at South Pointe High School in Rock Hill and had successful stints at other schools in the Palmetto State, has agreed to be Lloyd’s successor and spent Thursday and Friday at KMHS meeting with players, coaches and others in the community. He said he looks forward to joining the staff and continuing the success built by Lloyd and his staff.

“Coach Lloyd has a great program, so I’m coming into what is already a good coaching situation,” he said. “It’s in great shape. The challenge for me is to keep continuing what he started in the right direction.” Herron was named head coach last Thursday and met

coaches and players.

“I am really excited to be here,” he said. “I will be commuting for the time being but I hope on April 3 to be here teaching full-time.”

He said he will continue to live in Rock Hill, SC, because he has an autistic son. “I’m only about 30 minutes away, and it’s difficult to change his patterns right now. As things improve maybe we can see what we need to do but for right now I want to continue to make things stable for him.”

He may have at least one coaching hire before the ’23 season as defensive coordinator Darrel Wilson has announced his resignation. Wilson will continue to teach at KMHS.

“I plan to come in and talk to every coach and hope they will be staying,” Herron said.

“I want to have a highly-qualified offensive and defensive coordinator. I hope to fall right into Coach Lloyd’s position. I took in two classes today (last Thursday). I’m glad to have Coach Lloyd showing me the ropes.”

Herron grew up in Rock Hill where he attended North-

western High School. He has coached at several schools, most notably Rock Hill’s South Pointe High where his teams won state championships in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The ‘17 team was ranked #7 in the nation.

Prior to becoming a head coach he served as South Pointe’s defensive coordinator during its state championship in 2008 and also had assistant coaching stops at Northwestern, Clover, Strom Thurmond and A.C. Flora.

As a head coach, he was the fastest football coach in South Carolina history to reach 100 wins (100-12). He served as head coach in numerous allstar games, including the 2019 U.S. Army All-American Bowl where his East team beat the West 48-14. In 2018 he was the All-American Bowl National Coach of the Year and was the East team’s defensive coordinator. In 2017 he was invited to the Nike Elite High School Football Coaches Seminar and was the South Carolina High School League Regional Coach of the Year in 2011, 2014, 2016 and 2017. In 2015 he was the Carolina

Panthers High School Coach of the Week.

He has spoken at the USA Football Conference, Nike COY Clinic. Glazier Football Clinic, Clemson Coaches Clinic, USC Football Coaches Clinic, Virginia Tech Coaches Clinic and the National Defensive Football Clinic.

“We’ll make no promises as far as wins and championships,” he said of his time here, “but we’re going to have guys coaching hard every day to be the best we can be. What you do has to be sound but you have to win championships off the field.

“One of the things we’ll be looking for will be leadership and to hold each other accountable,” he said. “I had a meeting with the team (Thursday) and I felt like I had a great response. That night I had 10 texts from seniors saying they will give me their all. That’s what I want. I look forward to leading them.

“I am already excited about the future. Friday morning several of them sent me their Huddle account. As soon as I get home I’m going to start watching every game from last

Darrel Wilson resigns football duties at Kings Mountain High

Darrell Wilson has resigned his position as defensive coordinator of the Kings Mountain High football team but will continue his teaching and basketball duties at the school.

Wilson joined head coach Greg Lloyd’s staff eight years ago after coaching stints at Hunter Huss, Bessemer City and Forestview. During that time he mentored several defensive standouts that went on to play at the collegiate level including such stars as Jake Merchant, Day Day Wilson, Javari Wilson, Jerdon Pressley, Nathan Lease, Derek Wilson, James Ussery, Chance Cannon, Jeremiah Brown, Xavier Brown, Kobe Paysour, Ty Ledbetter, Marquiz Fewell and others. Many of his defensive standouts from the recently completed 2022 season such as All-State defensive lineman AJ Richardson will begin their college football experience in the fall.

Wilson lived on Hilltop and Cansler Street as a young-

ster. As an eighth grader he lived with KMHS assistant Coach Rick Fortner. Prior to his freshman year of high school he moved to Gastonia to live with his mother and became a football star for the Hunter Huss Huskies under head coach and former KMHS athlete David Bolin. He started four years at Appalachian State under the legendary head coach Jerry Moore and George Edwards, his linebacker coach, who is now coaching with Tampa Bay in the NFL.

“I really liked coaching,” Wilson said. “I loved working with the kids, getting to know them and forming relationships. We set a lot of defensive records during my time here, such as shutouts and having several players named Conference Player of the Year. Several times we got on a roll. It seems like we’d have four to five shutouts a year and had a lot of streaks where we gave up zero points.”

ers like the ones listed above, but also to other defensive coaches like Jeff Williams, James Brown, Matt Bridges, Tom Lease, Demise Williams and others.

“Tom Lease played at Ohio State and Demise Williams at Oklahoma State,” he noted. “We always had good defensive staffs.

“We had some good defensive teams,” he added. “We beat some #1 seeds in state playoff games. I remember beating an undefeated number one team at Freedom that had the number one ranked running back (BJ Emmons) in the nation that went on to play at Alabama. We held him to 15 yards. And, another time we beat an undefeated Northwest Cabarrus team.

“We always had good game plans and beat some very good teams over the years. But, the thing I will miss most will be the players.”

Wilson said he also enjoyed serving as an assistant

coach in girls basketball, and he will probably continue that. Some of his most enjoyable seasons were when his daughter, Saniya, was playing for the Lady Mountaineers. She is now at Catawba College but missed her entire freshman season because of knee surgery.

“She was red-shirted and still has four years of eligibility, but she will be a junior after this semester so I don’t know if she will get in four years of basketball,” he noted Wilson said he is probably not finished as a football coach.

“While I was on the staff we always had a good offense and defense,” he said. “I hope the new coach will be successful. I will take a year off but hope to be back in coaching someday. It’s nice to win championships but what’s more important is developing young men and helping them get to the next level and be productive citizens.”

KM softball falls to Burns

Kings Mountain High’s women’s softball team fell to non-conference foe Burns 2-0 in last week’s season opener. Burns got a home run from Laylah Haynes in the top of the second inning to take the lead.

Sage Strange hurled the win for the Lady Bulldogs. She struck out seven of the 13 batters she faced and gave up just one hit to Austyn Dixon, who went 1-for-2 on the night.

Freshman Madeline Huffman took the loss but did a stellar job on the mound. She struck out 11 Lady Bulldogs and gave up just four hits and no walks.

The Lady Mountaineers were scheduled to go to East Rutherford last night for a non-conference game. They open Big South 3A Conference action March 14 at 6 p.m. at Gastonia Ashbrook. Their next home game is March 17 against Hunter Huss.

Senior Nursing Students Can Receive Mentorship and $7,500 in Tuition Assistance

A partnership between CaroMont Health and Gardner-Webb University’s Hunt School of Nursing addresses the nursing shortage while helping students complete requirements for licensure. Through this initiative, CaroMont Health offers senior nursing students $7,500 in tuition assistance and the opportunity to complete their required practicum hours at the hospital. In return, the students agree to work as an RN for CaroMont Health for two years after graduation. This semester, eight GWU students are receiving assistance.

The Big South Conference’s golf match was held last week at Cramer Mountain with host Stuart Cramer winning by one stroke over Kings Mountain’s Mountaineers.

The Purple Storm finished with a 308 team score to KM’s 309. Crest was third at 365 followed by South Point 386, Forestview 401, Ashbrook 412, North Gaston 450 and Hunter Huss 491.

Gaston College expands educational opportunities for adults

Gaston College has received an Educational Opportunity Centers program grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The program provides counseling and information on college admissions to qualified adults who want to enter or continue a program of postsecondary education, and also advises participants on financial aid options, including basic financial planning skills. It is administered

through the Federal TRiO Programs office. The grant is for five award periods, with the first budget period running from September 1, 2022, through August 31, 2023. Gaston College has received $232,049 for this period.

NC legislators working to pass Medicaid expansion

North Carolina legislative leaders announced Thursday, March 2, an agreement to expand Medicaid to hundreds of thousands of additional low-income adults through the Affordable Care Act. While the legislation won’t be voted on until later this month, it is expected to pass with support from both houses.

House speaker Tim Moore commented on the agreement saying, “This is something that we can all be very proud of,” House Speaker Tim Moore said at a news conference with Senate leader Phil Berger. “What a huge announcement this is for North Carolina. What a huge policy direction this is that will provide help for so many in this state, but it’s going to do it in a

way that’s fiscally responsible.”

A key component of the agreement is the loosening or elimination of "certificate of need” laws requiring health regulators to sign off on plans to offer hospital beds for mental health and substance abuse patients, build ambulatory surgery centers or purchase MRI machines. However, the demand that advanced-practice nurses be able to treat patients without a doctor’s supervision was left out. Berger addressed that point saying, “There are still some things that need to be done, but this is our agreement and I’m very comfortable with it.”
