CRAVE Hot Dogs & Barbecue opened Saturday

CRAVE Hot Dogs & Barbecue (Crave) opened its doors to the public in a much-anticipated event on Saturday, July 13 at 11 a.m. A crowd, standing shoulder-to-shoulder, gathered outside, and the first 100 guests received a free hot dog. Crave serves Hot Dogs, Barbecue, Sandwiches, and more. The owners invited the community to come out for a day filled with kids' fun, a DJ, ax throwing, raffle prizes, and drinks.

On Friday at noon, KM Forward held its ribbon cutting for Crave. Business and community members welcomed the town’s newest restaurant, and friends and family looked on. KM

Forward Director Loretta Cozart thanked everyone for welcoming restaurant owners Chris Catania and his father, John Arcuri, to downtown Kings Mountain.

Chris thanked everyone for coming out, saying, “This restaurant is our family’s dream come true,” as he wiped away a tear and cut the ribbon. A unique feature at Crave is its beer wall where customers can purchase a variety of beers and serve themselves.

Kings Mountain is one of eight Crave locations currently offering Axe throwing. Customers can reserve a lane while grabbing a bite to eat or can order in advance online. This activity is perfect for parties, date nights, company events, or just perfecting your throw.

Crave is open daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at 222 S. Railroad Avenue, Kings Mountain. It is located in what was once Plonk Brothers Store. The restaurant occupies the first floor, and apartments will soon be available upstairs.

Following recent tragic deaths by suicide in Gaston County and surrounding areas, Partners Health Management and Gaston County health officials are sharing information about available resources for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis or having suicidal thoughts.

Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Nationally, in 2021, there were about 1.7 million suicide attempts by adults, and more than 48,000 people died by suicide, according to the CDC. That is about one death every 11 minutes.

Suicide is a particularly prevalent concern for young people. It is now the second leading cause of death for people ages 10 to 24.

In North Carolina, 1,412 deaths by suicide were reported in 2021. Gaston County’s suicide rate has remained consistently higher than North Carolina’s rate since 2008. The overall rate for Gaston County increased by 15.03%, while the state rate increased by 9.8% for the same period, according to Gaston County Public Health Director Brittain Kenney.

“Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in Gaston County for both children and young adults, crossing over into every demographic, income level, and social group,” Kenney said. “The effects of suicide impact us all, including the families and communities left with the devastation of losing a loved one. For every loss caused by suicide, the ripples are felt across our county.”

Health Crisis Line: (833) 353-2093.

• Call or text 988, the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.

• NC Peer Warmline: 1-855-PEERS NC (855) 733-7762).

Partners also offers Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Suicide Prevention Training available virtually each month. This training teaches participants how to recognize warning signs and use three simple steps to help someone who is struggling.

“Talking openly about suicide is the first step toward prevention as a community,” said Partners Community Engagement Training Manager Amber Matthews, who teaches QPR. “What I tell people in our training is that although there are a lot of licensed professionals trained to assist someone experiencing suicidal thoughts, they are not the first person to pick up on the warning signs. Noticing the warning signs and connecting someone to available resources is how lives are saved.”

Partners Health Management is a leading local managed care organization (LME/MCO), providing access to care for central and western North Carolina’s most vulnerable citizens. Partners manages Medicaid, state, and local funding for intellectual/developmental disabilities, mental health, and substance use disorder (IDD/MH/ SUD) services in our covered areas, which include Burke, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cleveland, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Rutherford, Stanly, Surry, Union, and Yadkin counties.

crisis and highlight work underway at the state and community level to curb suicide deaths. The summit drew 400 attendees from 61 of North Carolina’s counties. Organizers are partnering with 15 teams from 24 counties across North Carolina to identify and implement strategies to improve mental health and decrease suicides.

Decreasing the number of suicide deaths is an urgent matter, said Patrick Sullivan, director of the UNC Suicide Prevention Institute.

“This is something that’s killing people every day,” Sullivan said at the summit, noting that the rates are as high as he’s seen in his decades-long career. “We need to address this aggressively and urgently.”

Mental health experts say the worsening mental health crisis is driven by many factors, including isolation during the COVID pandemic, bullying, difficulty getting needed mental health care, and other stressors.

“I think everybody’s anxious,” Sullivan explained. “The sense of security that all of us had 10 years ago is way less right now. There’s wars in places where there haven’t been wars. There’s things that are terrifying everybody — wherever you are on the political spectrum. I think that’s the human commonality.”

Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office released its June statistics. During the month, there were 9,311 calls for service, 232 arrests, and 1,300 papers served, including 454 criminal, 564 civil, and 282 subpoenas.

Gaston County Schools is taking its employee recruiting and hiring efforts on the road.

The school district’s human resources department will conduct the “Come Work With Us” Hiring Roadshow on Monday, July 22 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Gaston County Public Library (Main Branch), 1555 E. Garrison Blvd., Gastonia. Anyone interested in working in Gaston County Schools during the upcoming 2024-2025 school year is invited to stop by; no appointment is necessary. The school district is hiring for teaching and non-teaching positions, including: Classroom teachers

One hundred seventy-six incident reports were handled: 139 were criminal, and 27 were non-criminal. Ninety-eight concealed carry permits were issued. Narcotics seized were

113.0 g, Marijuana 190.2g, Meth 1,046.4 g, and Heroin 843.8 g. The monthly average of inmates handled by the sheriff’s office was 305 males and 61 females.

The suicide rate in counties surrounding Gaston County is also troubling. In 2021, there were 33 suicides of individuals 10 years or older in Gaston County. During the same period, Cleveland County witnessed 18 suicides, Lincoln County saw 13 suicides, Rutherford County lost 9 by suicide, Burke County suffered 13 suicides, and Mecklenburg County experienced 126 suicides.

The Gaston County and Partners Health initiatives add to a statewide effort to provide greater mental health education and support. In June, the UNC Suicide Prevention Institute and Carolina Across 100, a five-year university initiative looking to work in all of the state’s 100 counties, held a Statewide Summit on Suicide Prevention at UNC’s Friday Center to discuss factors contributing to the mental health

However, Sullivan said some population segments are disproportionately affected by suicide, with rates increasing fastest among people of color, younger people, and people who live in rural areas. LGBTQ+ people and military veterans can also be at higher risk of suicide.

“There can’t be a one-size-fits-all suicide prevention,” Sullivan said. “Things have to be targeted to meet people where they are and at a certain point in time.”

Gaston health department planning vaccine clinics

The Gaston County Health Department, in partnership with Gaston County Schools, is hosting two vaccine clinics to make sure students have the im-

munizations they need for the upcoming school year.

The clinics will be held on Saturday, July 27 and Saturday, August 17 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the health department offices located at 991 W. Hudson Blvd. in Gastonia.

To make an appointment or for more information, call (704) 853-5000.

Parents should bring with them a copy of their child’s immunization/shot record and proof of insurance; Medicaid is also accepted. Children who do not have health insurance may qualify for free vaccines for school.

Suicide is a complicated issue with several contributing factors that require a multi-layered preventive response, Kenney added. “Our community must make sure individuals and families know how to recognize mental health crisis and get early support and intervention. Everyone needs to know about the safety nets like our local crisis lines. We also need to make sure our community provides resources that promote resilience and help individuals overcome mental health challenges.”

City discusses future of the cabooses

During its work session on July 9, Kings Mountain City Council heard three proposals regarding the two cabooses currently located at the city's leased old depot property.

City Manager Jim Palenick explained that the city was working on its Strategic Plan, and discussion had arisen regarding the Kings Mountain Farmers’ Market. This prompted the city to consider divesting itself of the two cabooses, which led to the decision to put out a Request for Proposals to determine possible options.

Initially, the city received five proposals. Two groups offered to remove and relocate both cabooses,

one for $12,000 and the other for $24,000. However, since the city also received three proposals that would cost the city nothing, those two proposals were effectively dismissed. Three other proposals were received: Micky Simmons of Simmons Structural Movers of Cleveland County, Tom Carlton of Lattimore, and a consortium of NC Railway Museum and Southeastern Narrow Gauge & Shortline Museum. Micky Simmons of Simmons Structural Movers spoke first, sharing his vision of converting the cabooses into Airbnb accommodations. He has 26 acres in Cleveland County and has previously completed similar projects. Once

approved, he estimates he could move the cars within 40 days. He also mentioned that he was the contractor who most recently moved the George Washington Cornwell house at Kings Mountain Historical Museum, so he has experience moving large items. Cleveland County native Tom Carlton of Lattimore spoke next, sharing a similar plan of using the cabooses for Airbnb accommodations. He brought materials showing how popular his current caboose Airbnb is, and said he planned a similar restoration for this project. Representatives of a consortium between the NC Railway Museum outside of Raleigh and the Southeast-

ern Narrow Gauge & Shortline Museum near Newton spoke last, providing a history of the two cabooses. Caboose 383 is a 1935 boxcar that was converted into a caboose in 1967, and Caboose 388 was also a converted boxcar from the same time period. Both

were decommissioned in 1975. Each group would receive one of the cabooses and restore it as close to the original as possible. The Southeastern Narrow Gauge & Shortline Museum hopes to put the car back into service and allow riders to ride for a small fee that helps fund the museum. After the presentations, City Manager Palenick announced that no action was to be taken at that meeting. He acknowledged that the council's decision would be tough, and the city would await their direction.

Cleveland County community supports grieving family

Real to Reel International Film Festival opens July 24

As reported by Queen City News on July 12, members of the Cleveland County community are showing support for the family of a 2-year-old who lost his life.

Wyatt Scott Gordon suffered a brain injury after falling into a pool on July 4 and later succumbed to those injuries on July 7th, three days later while on life support.

On Friday, family and friends gathered at the Waco Fire Department to keep Wyatt’s memory alive. Several fire departments from across Cleveland County and the surrounding area attended to support the family and serve barbecue as a fundraiser.

“Things like this, as tragic as they are, they show that family, that brotherhood we all talk about,” said one firefighter and family member.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, July 13, at the First United Methodist Church, Lawndale. Wyatt was born in Cleveland County, North Carolina on March 15, 2022.

“Wyatt was the sweetest, independent, goofy, and most loving boy that anyone was lucky to meet,” his obituary reads. “He brought a light to the world that made everyone who saw him smile, he was our son-shine. Strangers would come up and tell him how beautiful he was from his bright blonde hair, big blue eyes, cheeks, and a smile that could brighten any day. He made a lasting impression on everyone he met,

even if it was for a passing moment. Wyatt had many loves. He loved to be outside, no matter the weather. He loved wee-woos (fire trucks) and choo-choos (trains). He never missed a moment to point them out. He loved his partners in crime (Maverick and Goose). Most of all he loved his Mommy, Daddy, and Sissy. Wyatt lived his life to the fullest every single day. In two short years, Wyatt gave us a lifetime of love and memories and reminded us every day to find the sunshine even through the storm.”

A GoFundMe accounting has been established under the child’s name.

Mike Pendleton, the boy’s uncle, created the fundraiser to help ease the financial burden for Wyatt’s parents, Anne Marie and Zach Gordon.

Gov. Cooper pushes N.C. hospitals to relieve $4B in medical debt

On July 1, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) announced new actions leveraging the state’s Medicaid program that will encourage hospitals to relieve a potential $4 billion in existing medical debt for approximately two million low and middle-income North Carolinians and ease the burden of medical debt in the future.

NCDHHS submitted a request to the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to approve a set of conditions hospitals must meet to be eligible to receive an enhanced amount of Medicaid funds. These conditions include relieving existing medical debt and establishing policies to prevent Once approved by CMS, hospitals that implement a set of medical debt relief and mitigation policies will be eligible for enhanced payments under the Healthcare Access and Stabilization Program (HASP) (hospitals that choose not to implement the policies will be eligible for HASP payments at a lower level). These policies will provide relief to consumers through the forgiveness of existing debt, establish protections against the accumulation of future medical debt, and prevent problematic debt collection practices going forward.

Specifically, hospitals will be required to implement the following policies as a condition of eligibility for enhanced HASP payments:

• Relieving all medical debt deemed uncollectible dating back to January 1, 2014, for any individuals not enrolled in Medicaid with incomes at least at or below 350% of the federal poverty level (FPL) or for whom total debt exceeds 5% of annual income.

• Relieving all unpaid medical debt from January 1, 2014, for individuals enrolled in

Medicaid.

• Providing discounts on medical bills of between 50100% for patients with incomes at or below 300% FPL, with the discount varying based on the patient’s income.

• Automatically enrolling people into financial assistance, known as charity care, by implementing a policy for presumptively determining individuals eligible for financial aid through a streamlined screening approach.

• Not selling any medical debt for consumers with incomes at or below 300% FPL to debt collectors.

• Not reporting a patient’s debt covered by these policies to a credit reporting agency.

NCDHHS has partnered with Undue Medical Debt as the preferred facilitator of medical debt relief. This work aligns with NCDHHS’ continued commitment to improving the health and well-being of North Carolinians through smart investments that lower costs in the long run by addressing social determinants of health, supporting access to prevention, removing barriers to health care, and incentivizing healthy outcomes.

Reducing medical debt coincides with other efforts to improve healthcare coverage in the state. On April 1, Governor Cooper announced that more than 400,000 North Carolinians now have access to health care through the state’s Medicaid expansion following record enrollment numbers and a coordinated campaign to enroll North Carolinians across the state.

“So many younger, working people desperately need affordable health insurance and Medicaid Expansion fills the bill for thousands of them and with people all the way through age 64,” said Governor Roy Cooper.

“This milestone and the speed at which we’ve reached it shows just how life-changing Medicaid expansion is for our

state, and we will continue to get more eligible North Carolinians enrolled.”

“We got it done, and we got it done well!” said N.C. Health and Human Services Secretary Kody Kinsley. “We continue to see how truly life-changing access to health care is for all North Carolinians, as a growing number of people each day are able to see a doctor to address physical health, behavioral health, and dental care, get prescriptions filled, and much more.”

This number represents more than two-thirds of the 600,000 people North Carolina expects to enroll over the next two years. Since December 1, North Carolina has enrolled an average of more than 1,000 people per day in Medicaid expansion – a pace faster than other states that have expanded Medicaid.

Many people who have enrolled through Medicaid expansion are young adults between the ages of 19 and 29 and work part-time or full-time. New enrollees also disproportionately live in rural communities. The number one county with the highest number of enrollees per population is Robeson County.

For the more than 400,000 new enrollees, Medicaid has already provided more than 705,000 prescriptions for things like heart health, diabetes, and other illnesses and covered more than $11.2 million in claims for dental services since the December 1 launch.

The NCDHHS Medicaid Expansion website includes information on eligibility, FAQs, how to apply, and a sign-up form to receive the latest news and updates. To learn more or apply for N.C. Medicaid, visit Medicaid.nc.gov.

Experienced mouser in need of work

Cleveland County An-

imal Services posted on Facebook last weekend that they have experienced mousers ready to work for you. The ad stated that these mousers are an ideal form of non-toxic pest control. One must provide a safe home and adopt a working cat at the shelter to obtain a free mouser. The cats have been altered, vaccinated, microchipped, and have an ear tipped.

Working Cats, or "Barn Cats," are non-socialized cats that are not adapting to a shelter environment or display behaviors that make them less attractive to adopters. This makes them much more difficult to place through our traditional adoption program. They are usually accustomed to outdoor life and are not suited to be indoor pet companions. These cats are often called “stray” or “feral” and avoid the touch of human hands. They prefer minimal contact with humans and tend to have higher prey drives. They often hunt snakes, rats, or mice, making them an excellent form of natural rodent control.

Why Adopt a Working Cat?

• They serve as excellent critter control – even if they are not particularly skilled hunters

• Studies have shown that just the smell of cats on your property might even be enough to keep mice away

• They are an ecowfriendly solution to your vermin problems

• They are considered low maintenance

• They are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped

• There is no adoption fee

• And most importantly, it saves lives!

All working cat adoptions include:

• Initial medical exam

• Initial deworming

• FVRCP vaccination

• Rabies vaccination and tag

• Microchip ID and registration

• Spay or neutering

In order to adopt, you must have a valid, government-issued photo ID. This can be a driver's license, passport, or ID card.

The release date and time is exactly 72 hours after an animal has been impounded as a stray. N.C. law requires this holding

period in order to provide owners the opportunity to reclaim their lost pet. If the owner has surrendered an animal, the release date and time is immediate. If the release date and time fall during a time when the Animal Shelter is not open, the animal will be available when the shelter opens on the next business day.

Adoption Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Animal services now offer extended hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays. The shelter is closed on Sundays except for special events.

Did you know that the resident cat at the British Prime Minister's home has been named “Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office?”

If you require a uniquely skilled working cat, feel free to visit www.clevelandcountypets.org and look through their listings. Working cats available for adoption are labeled "Working Cat". Not all who apply will qualify. For more information, contact Cleveland County Animal Services at 1601 Airport Road, Shelby, NC, 28150, (704) 481-9884.

FDA warns major Brands against baking up misleading product labels

On June 17, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to Bimbo Bakeries USA, maker of such popular national ready-to-eat brands as Sara Lee, Brownberry, Entenmann’s, Bimbo, Arnold, Oroweat, Wholesome Harvest, Thomas’ English Muffins, Ball Park Buns & Rolls, and others. In a public letter, the FDA stated that the company is misleading people with food allergies by posting allergen warning labels on foods that do not contain them.

The warning letter, a result of recent inspections and a review of its product labels at the company’s bakeries in Phoenix, AZ, and Topeka, KS, revealed serious violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) and applicable regulations.

product’s formulation, po-

tentially causing confusion among consumers.

Brownberry’s Whole Grains 12 Grains and Seeds product is misbranded because the ingredient list includes “Kamut®,” which is not part of Khorasan wheat’s common or usual name because it is a brand name. Furthermore, Khorasan is misspelled as “Khorsan.”

The warning letter reiterated the FDA’s expectations: “The FDA expects food manufacturers to follow good manufacturing practices and implement preventive controls to prevent the unintentional incorporation of allergens into foods which are not formulated to contain them. Labeling is not a substitute for adherence to good manufacturing practices or implementing preventive controls. Instead, firms must comply with applicable requirements to address allergen cross-contact.”

Violations include mislabeled food products such as Sara Lee brand Artesano Brioche, Delightful Multigrain, Artesano Golden Wheat, and Artesano Smooth Multigrain ready-to-eat (RTE) bread loaf products. The labels were deemed false or misleading because they include sesame seeds in the ingredients and “Contains” statements; however, sesame seeds are not an ingredient.

The Brownberry brand Whole Grains 12 Grains and Seeds RTE bread loaf product is misbranded due to a similar issue. The product label includes walnuts, almonds, and hazelnuts in the ingredient and “Contains” statements; however, these nuts are not included in the

The FDA continues, “This letter is not intended to be an all-inclusive statement of violations that may exist at your facility or in connection with your products. You are responsible for investigating and determining any violations’ causes and preventing their recurrence or the occurrence of other violations. It is your responsibility to ensure that your firm complies with all requirements of federal law, including FDA regulations.”

Food labels must be truthful and not misleading. Firms are required to list the ingredients present in their products accurately. In addition,

The Cherokee County School District is dedicated to recruiting and retaining the very best employees for its students. The Cherokee County School District offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package.

We believe that our employees should be appreciated, given opportunities for personal and professional development, and work in a supportive environment that emphasizes preparing our students for a successful future.

firms must follow good manufacturing practices (GMPs) and implement appropriate preventive controls to prevent allergen cross-contact. Allergen cross-contact is the unintentional incorporation of allergens into foods that are not formulated to contain them. Labeling is not a substitute for adherence to GMPs or implementing preventive controls. Instead, firms must comply with applicable requirements to address allergen cross-contact. The FDA recognizes that an advisory statement such as “may contain” could be considered truthful and not misleading in addressing situations where there are low levels of potential unintended allergens due to cross-contact despite strong GMPs. However, listing a major food allergen in the ingredient statement or “Contains” statement when it is not present in the product formulation does not comply with FDA labeling requirements.

People with food allergies need to be able to utilize accurate labeling to feel confident in their food choices. Following the passage of the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act, which added sesame to the list of major food allergens, the FDA has become aware of practices, like the company’s action described in the warning letter, which may lead to a decrease in choices for consumers with food allergies. The agency continues to monitor the situation and will take necessary and appropriate steps to protect consumers with food allergies.

It’s important that food labeling, at all points of the supply chain, appropriately and accurately reflects a food’s contents and formulation, including the presence of all major food allergens. Individuals with food allergies need safe food choices that allow them to take appropriate steps to avoid products that may cause them serious and life-threatening harm. Additionally, it is essential to ensure the integrity of the food label, including the ingredient and “Contains” statements, so that consumers can trust the information on the food label to make informed choices. A comment by Bimbo Bakeries USA was not immediately available.

Sleep Tight

(Part 3 of the “REST” series) According to the CDC, around onethird of adults in the US don’t get enough sleep every day. An estimated 50–70 million Americans have chronic sleep disorders, including insomnia, which affects about one in three adults. These statistics are startling because poor quality sleep can severely impact mental health, hinder cognitive function, and elevate the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Sleep is one of the most precious

DANYALE PATTERSON

gifts God has given us, yet in our hustle-bustle world, it’s often the first thing we sacrifice. Imagine a garden without water, a car without fuel, or a phone without charge. That’s what our bodies and minds become when we neglect rest. Sleep isn’t just a physical need; it’s a spiritual necessity. Psalm 127:2 (NIV), it’s written, “In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat—for he grants sleep to those he loves.” This verse beautifully encapsulates God’s perspective on sleep. Our relentless striving isn’t what sustains us; rather, it’s God’s provision, and part of that provision is the gift of restful sleep.

Rejuvenate In our pursuit of productivity, we often forget that sleep is a time for our bodies to heal, our minds to recharge, and our souls to rejuvenate. Just as God designed the day to be followed by night, He designed our lives to include periods of rest. It’s during sleep that our bodies repair tissues, our brains consolidate memories, and our spirits find peace. Another profound scripture is Psalm 4:8 (NLT) , which says, “In peace, I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O LORD, will keep me safe.” This verse reminds us that sleep is more than just a biological function; it is also a spiritual act of trust. When we lay our heads down, we surrender our worries and burdens to God, trusting that He will watch over us. Since

God doesn’t sleep, we can. Psalm 121:3 (NLT) says, “He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber.” So tonight, as you prepare for bed, take a moment to thank God for the day and surrender your worries to Him. Trust that He will grant you the rest you need. Embrace sleep as a gift and wake up refreshed and ready to embrace His new mercies each morning.

PRAY THIS PRAYER:

“Dear Lord, you are a faithful and good God. When I am awake I trust you to keep me safe, and when I am asleep I trust that you will protect and sustain me. When I lie down I will not be afraid; my sleep will be sweet, according to your word. Thank you for creating my body to rest, and bringing peace to my soul.

You are worthy of praise and glory forever and ever. In Jesus’ name, I prayAmen.”

CONNECTING TO GOD:

I encourage you to open your heart to God’s love and grace. Seek forgiveness for past wrongs, and invite Jesus into your heart as your Savior and Lord. Find a supportive community in a local church where you can grow and serve others. You can cultivate a meaningful relationship with God by dedicating daily time to reading the Bible and praying.

rt health is vital. Despite widespread recognition of the importance of a healthy heart, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death around the world. CVD includes coronary artery disease and other issues affecting the heart or blood vessels. e.

Even though heart disease affects both men and women, it’s often mistakenly seen as a condition that mostly affects men.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that heart disease, namely coronary artery disease, is the leading cause of death for women and those assigned female at birth. It occurs when plaque develops in the walls of the arteries and slows down the flow of blood supply to the heart and other parts of the body. Women are particularly at risk because, after menopause, hormone changes like a reduction in the production of estrogen can cause higher risk of coronary heart disease, especially in smaller blood

In addition to hormonal changes after menopause, the risk factors for heart disease in women include: Diabetes: Women with diabetes are more likely to develop heart disease than men with diabetes. There’s also an increased risk of silent heart attack since diabetes can change the way women perceive pain.

• Mental health: Emotional stress and depression can affect women’s hearts more than men’s, as depression may compromise a woman’s ability to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

• Smoking: Smoking is another risk factor for heart disease.

NCDHHS issues water safety warning

As temperatures remain high, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) is encouraging residents to enjoy recreational waters safely and be aware of possible health risks, including harmful algal blooms. Certain infections, such as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), vibriosis, and cryptosporidiosis, are also more common during summer.

"Our goal is to help North Carolinians lower their health risks while still having a great time in the water," said Dr. Kelly Kimple, Acting Director of

NCDHHS Division of Public Health. "By following certain guidelines, we can minimize illness associated with harmful algae, bacteria, and other risks, ensuring a healthier experience for all."

To help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer for you and your pets, NCDHHS recommends the following guidelines for recreational waters:

• Recognize Harmful Algal Blooms: Algal blooms can produce toxins harmful to humans and pets. They often appear as thick, green, blue-green, or red scum on the water's surface or along the shoreline. Avoid contact with water and keep your pets away

from these areas. To report an algal bloom, contact the nearest North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regional office or submit a report online.

• Avoid Suspicious Water Conditions: Be cautious if the water appears discolored, has a strong odor, or contains visible debris. Such conditions may indicate poor water quality or possible bacterial contamination.

• Stay Updated on Water Quality Advisories: Stay informed about water quality advisories or warnings issued by local authorities for recreational waters. These advisories may include alerts about harmful

algal blooms or bacterial contamination.

• Prevent Ingestion: Avoid swallowing water. Reduce your risk of illness by keeping your mouth closed, holding your nose shut, or using a nose clip while swimming, particularly while jumping or diving into warm freshwater lakes, rivers, and hot springs. Carry fresh water for your pets to drink and keep them hydrated throughout your water activities to discourage them from drinking or swallowing water while swimming.

• Rinse Off After Water Activities: After swimming, rinse yourself and your pets with clean, fresh water to remove any poten-

tial bacteria, algae or toxins that may cling to the skin or fur. This simple step can minimize health risks associated with waterborne contaminants.

• If you have an open wound, stay out of saltwater or brackish water. If your wound could come into contact with coastal waters or raw seafood, its drippings, or its juices, cover it with a waterproof bandage. Immediately wash wounds after contact with these items.

• Monitor for Symptoms: Be alert for any symptoms you or your pets experience after water activities, such as skin irritations, gastrointestinal issues, respiratory problems,

or unusual behavior. If you or your pets exhibit any concerning symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. For more information and additional resources on water safety, visit www.cdc. gov/healthy-swimming/ about/index.html. More summer safety tips are also available on the NCDHHS Division of Public Health website at www.dph.ncdhhs.gov/blog/2023/05/25/ summer-safety-tips-grilling-and-swimming and www.dph.ncdhhs.gov/ blog/2023/06/28/beatheat-7-tips-staying-cool. Shelby Social District now

Carly C. Bostic, Executive Director of the Uptown Shelby Association, noted recently that Uptown Shelby’s new Social District started as of July 1.

Bostic said this is a “first” for Uptown Shelby, adding, “(and) a big thanks is owed to our elected officials and the employees of the City of Shelby for recognizing the impact that a social district has on the vitality of local businesses.”

She continued, “The start of social districts was made possible when the NC General Assembly passed a law (HB890) in September of 2021 that allowed local city and county governments to create social districts. This change in law allows cities, like Shelby, to go beyond their sidewalk ordinances permitting alcohol outside of restaurants to now allow patrons to fully explore the city and participating businesses.”

Bostic noted also “…The Uptown Shelby Social District is an ordinance that was voted on and approved by the City of Shelby City Council on April 15, 2024, and took effect on July 1, 2024. The Uptown Social District will be available seven days a week, Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.”

Patrons, said Bostic, must note that the cups are not reusable and must be disposed of before leaving the social district, and that failure to do so would be a violation of the ordinance.

“To help ensure compliance,” she noted, “the back of every social district cup will contain the establishment’s name, day, and time.”

She continued, “If you were to go into ‘Business A’ and purchase a beverage it will have that specific business name and logo as well as the day and time it was ordered. A major goal of the social district is to assist with economic vitality and foot traffic in Uptown. For example, someone could order a beverage from a restaurant while waiting for their table and walk around Uptown Shelby and shop, but only in the businesses that have the ‘Welcomed Here,’ or ‘Sold Here’ decal on their window front.”

She stressed also that no one may bring their own alcoholic beverage into the social district at any time ever.

On the City of Shelby’s website, it is also noted that a “… single patron may purchase any combination of the following at one time: 1.) two beers, or 2.) two wines, or 3.) one wine and one beer, or 4.) one mixed drink, as per N.C. Gen. Stat. 18B-300.1 (e)(3) and 18B-1010.”

Bostic also stated that in authorizing municipalities to create social districts, the N.C. General Assembly “…also created specific requirements to be followed in creating and enforcing social districts.”

The City of Shelby Police Department and Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) have been educated on the social district program and policies and are available when or if needed. Ms. Bostic said, regarding anyone not adhering to the set rules for the program/ordinance, or breaking said/stated rules of the ordinance, and that since the Uptown Shelby Social District is part of the City of Shelby and encompasses both public and private sections of the city, that “…patrons that participate are encouraged to walk and enjoy Historic Uptown Shelby and the various businesses while enjoying an alcoholic drink within the specified boundaries and hours of the district. However, if a patron does violate the face civil or criminal punishment as specified within the ordinance.”

She added, “While every town may have different designs or setups, many of the programs, policies, and standards are the same throughout North Carolina. In researching this program to see if it would be a good fit for Uptown Shelby, I have spoken with representatives at the City of Lenoir, the City of Hickory, and the City of Kannapolis.”

By way of giving additional information on the Shelby Social District, Ms. Bostic said any businesses in the Uptown Shelby Municipal Service District boundaries are eligible to go to the City of Shelby Social District web page and fill out an application. She continued, “They have four choices to choose from that best serves their business – Sold Here: Drinks are available for purchase at this establishment; Welcomed Here: Drinks are welcome

website at www.cityofshelby.com.

in this non-ABC permitted establishment; Not Permitted Here: Drinks are prohibited and unavailable for purchase; Sold Here + NO Outside Beverages: this ABC-per-

mitted establishment participates but does not allow outside drinks in their business. There is signage placed within the Uptown Shelby Social District. This signage in-

cludes guidelines of the Social District, as well as when you are leaving the district.”

Bostic noted a person, or persons, may report anyone breaking the regulations of the social district by calling the Shelby Police Department’s non-emergency number at (704) 484-6845, or, in case of a true emergency and when an immediate response is needed, they can call 911 to report the details of the crime you witness, she said.

Meta eases restrictions on Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has lifted its heightened penalties on former President Donald Trump's accounts, announced Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, on Friday.

“Today, we are making a change to the updated protocol we announced in January 2023. To ensure people can hear from political candidates on our platforms, we will review accounts subject to this protocol on a periodic basis to determine whether heightened suspension penalties for Community Standards violations remain appropriate,” Clegg explained. “We will make this determination by weighing our responsibility, as outlined by the Oversight Board, to ‘allow political expression’ against our responsibility ‘to avoid serious risks to other human rights.’”

The timing of this decision aligns with the upcoming political conventions, including the Republican convention next week, where presidential candidates will be formally nominated. Clegg emphasized, “In assessing our responsibility to

allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for President on the same basis.

As a result, former President Trump, as the nominee of the Republican Party, will no longer be subject to the heightened suspension penalties.”

This move marks a significant shift from the measures imposed after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Following the violent events of that day, Meta suspended Trump's accounts for two years, citing his praise of those who stormed the Capitol. This unprecedented suspension was part of a new Crisis Policy Protocol designed to guide Meta's response to civil unrest and imminent harm.

Trump's accounts were reinstated at the beginning of 2023 but remained under strict scrutiny. Meta’s Oversight Board reviewed the risks to public safety and concluded that the threat had diminished enough to adhere to the original twoyear suspension timeline. Consequently, Trump's accounts were reinstated with significant restrictions and

CROSSWORD PUZZLE

potential penalties to prevent repeat offenses.

Until recently, Trump faced harsher penalties for any further violations. Under these conditions, any infractions could result in suspensions ranging from one month to two years, depending on the severity. This protocol applied not only to Trump but to any public figure reinstated after suspensions related to civil unrest.

Clegg reflected on the extraordinary nature of the original suspension, noting, “The normal state of affairs is that the public should be able to hear from a former President of the United States, and a declared candidate for that office again, on our platforms. Now that the time period of the suspension has elapsed, the question is not whether we choose to reinstate Mr. Trump’s accounts, but whether there remain such extraordinary circumstances that extending the suspension beyond the original two-year period is justified.”

Social media’s core values of open debate and free flow of ideas played a crucial role in this decision. Clegg previously stated,

“Social media is rooted in the belief that open debate and the free flow of ideas are important values, especially at a time when they are under threat in many places around the world. As a general rule, we don’t want to get in the way of open, public, and democratic debate on Meta’s platforms — especially in the context of elections in democratic societies like the United States. The public should be able to hear what their politicians are saying — the good, the bad, and the ugly — so that they can make informed choices at the ballot box. But that does not mean there are no limits to what people can say on our platform. When there is a clear risk of real-world harm — a deliberately high bar for Meta to intervene in public discourse — we act.”

By lifting these heightened penalties, Trump will now be treated more like any other user on Facebook and Instagram. This change coincides with the Republican National Convention, where he is expected to be formally nominated as the party's candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

Since June 30, Trump

has been actively posting on Facebook again, sharing videos of his rallies and criticisms of President Joe Biden. He boasts 34 million followers on Facebook, compared to Biden’s 11 million. Trump has nearly 25 million followers on Instagram, while Biden has 17.1 million.

Despite easing penalties, Trump remains subject to Meta’s Community Standards, which apply to all users. These standards require adherence to guidelines ensuring authenticity, safety, privacy, and dignity. Users must avoid violence, incitement to violence, graphic content, criminal behavior, fraud, and deception. Prohibited behaviors include adult sexual exploitation, nudity, bullying, harassment, hate speech, suicide, self-injury, and eating disorders, as well as the sexual exploitation and abuse of children. Identity theft, cybersecurity abuses, spam, intellectual property infringements, and exploitation of minors are also grounds for suspension.

Full details of the Meta Community Standards can be found at https://transparency. meta.com/en-gb/poli cies/ community-standards/.

FDA announced workshop on brain-computer interface devices

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) have announced a public workshop to engage with stakeholders in the implanted brain-computer interface device ecosystem.

The workshop’s purpose is to discuss the development of clinical outcome assessments (COAs) to evaluate the effectiveness of implanted brain-computer interfaces (BCIs).

The Implanted BCI devices that are the focus of

this workshop are neuroprostheses that interface with the central nervous system to restore lost motor and/or sensory capabilities in people with impairments in motor function and/or communication.

BACKYARD BASH WORD SEARCH

How to Find Reliable Health Information Online

Dear Savvy Senior,

How can I tell if the health info on a website is trustworthy? I usually do a Google search on a symptom, drug or health condition when I want to research something, but with so much information out there I’m not sure what I can trust.

Skeptical Sal

Dear Sal,

You’re wise to be skeptical! There’s an overwhelming amount of health advice on the internet today and it can be hard to tell what’s credible. To help you sort through the online clutter and locate reliable, trustworthy health information, here are a few tips to follow, along with some top-rated sites you can turn to with confidence.

Savvy Searching

First, know that Google or Bing is not always the best place to start a search. You’ll increase your odds of finding reliable health information if you begin with websites run by government agencies (identified by URLs ending in .gov), medical associations (often .org) or academic institutions (.edu).

Commercial websites (usually ending in .com), such as drug or insurance

companies who may be trying to sell you their products, are usually not the most trustworthy options. To find out who’s sponsoring a site and where the information came from, click on the “About Us” tab on the site’s home page.

Also note that good health and medical information changes all the time so check the date that information was published to make sure it’s current.

Some other areas you need be wary of include online symptom checkers and artificial intelligence (AI) tools. While symptom checkers do offer potential diagnoses that could fit your set of symptoms, they are often inaccurate, and tend to err on the side of caution says Ateev Mehrotra, MD, professor of health care policy at Harvard Medical School. AI tools, like ChatGPT, can also be wrong or generate false but scientific sounding information.

You also need to be cautious about using medical information from social media, online forums or YouTube. Comments in these places may sound authoritative even if the authors have no medical training or expertise.

Top Health Sites

While there are many excellent websites that provide reliable health and medical information, one of the best all-purpose sites that’s recommended by Consumer Reports for researching symptoms and conditions is MedlinePlus (medlineplus.gov).

A service of the National Library of Medicine, the world’s largest medical library, and part of the National Institutes of Health, MedlinePlus provides high-quality, trustworthy health and wellness information that’s easy to understand and free of advertising.

Here are a few additional websites, recommended by the Medical Library Association and others, to help you find reliable information on specific diseases, conditions and treatments.

Cancer: National Cancer Institute (cancer.gov), American Cancer Society (cancer.org) and National Comprehensive Cancer Network (nccn.org).

Heart disease: American Heart Association (americanheart.org), National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (nhlbi. nih.gov).

Diabetes: American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org).

Alzheimer’s disease: Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) and Alzheimers.gov.

Public health and vaccines: Center for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov).

Alternative medicine: National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (nccih.nih.gov) and the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements (ods.od.nih.gov).

Any research you do online before seeing a doctor, be sure to save or print your findings out on paper, including the site you got your information from, so you can review it together.
