It was August of 2022. I had recently transitioned out of my role as Women’s Pastor here at NMC and was now responsible for Discipleship & Care groups. I was approached by a group of men who had long been discussing offering a recovery ministry through NMC. They had a burden to be able to help men who struggled with substance abuse issues and needed not only physical relief from addiction but also spiritual healing. I was compelled by their conviction to add this type of support group to our ministry offerings, but I had a few concerns. What about the women? What about people who struggle with a variety of problems, not only substance abuse?
As I began to explore options for recovery ministries, I came across re:generation On its website, I read this:
“Re:generation is a biblically-based discipleship program offering healing, recovery, and freedom from any type of struggle. The reality is that we all experience brokenness in this life. You’re not alone. We all have struggles toovercome.Whetherbigorsmall, these destructive thoughts and habits hold us back from the life we want—and the life God calls us to live. The good news is that God loves you, wants to heal you, and has a plan for you.” Yes, please -tell me more!
I found a church in Roswell that also offered re:generation, so I called them to ask more detailed questions. They invited me to “Commencement” the next evening to hear the personal stories from people who had just completed this year-long program through the 12 steps. From the moment people started speaking, I was floored.
People are standing up, in a church, in front of a crowded room and honestly talking about their struggles with sin?? And proclaiming that they had found a deeper intimacy with the Lord and freedom from things they struggled with their entire life??? I had zero doubt that the Lord is both capable and willing to heal people, but, in all honesty, I wasn’t hearing this kind of testimony from people in my circles. Men and women humbly yet honestly sharing their experiences with substance abuse, sexual addiction, and other personal struggles—such as finding their identity solely in motherhood, battling anger, having a critical spirit, or feeling the need to control everyone around them. Everyday challenges that many face, yet their stories were filled with a sense of optimism and hope that shone through as they spoke.
I left that evening with a profound sense of hope that the Lord could use re:generation at NMC to help people know Him fully and find freedom that only He can offer. Fueled by this vision, I attended the national training conference, read through the material, and had dozens of conversations with people who might be interested in bringing re:generation to NMC. Fortyfive days later in October 2022, we launched our pilot group -- 28 men and women who had agreed to spend the next nine months walking through the re:generation content as a participant. These were men and women who had been followers of Jesus and active at NMC for quite a while but they had no presenting “sin struggle” on the surface. However, through our collective journey, we discovered that we were all in recovery -- not from drugs and alcohol -- but from deeper, inward struggles like
Becky Everette
pride, people pleasing, codependency, and mistrust of God.
Armed with a lot of passion and prayer, we opened re:generation to NMC in August of 2023. In the past 18 months, 85 people have completed re:generation, with another 100 people currently in the process. Time and time again, we see people show up at re:gen who are stuck, hurting, or broken, and a year later, after becoming right with God (Steps 1-3), right with themselves (Steps 4-6), in right relationship with others (Steps 7-9) and continuing to work the steps (Steps 10-12), they are a new person. This is why you’ll often hear us say, “Change is possible.”
re:generation is just one tool of discipleship -- it’s the Word of God, circling up with the people of God, being transformed by the Spirit of God -- but the Lord is using it to radically change people’s lives at NMC. Re:generation has helped restore my deep belief that change is possible through Christ. His Word gives us a process to experience the abundant life He offers.
One of my favorite things Jesus says is, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.” Luke 5:31-32 NLT
May we all realize that we are all in need of the Great Physician to enter into our story for true healing. And may we, as a church, be a place where all people who seek healing can find a new life in Christ.

◀ The Goldsmiths
“Lord, if this is not Your will, please change my heart.”
We got married in 2009, and three years later, with a new longing in our hearts, we began trying to grow our family. As months passed, our excitement shifted to concern, and by month nine, worry began to settle in.
In January 2013, I (Kelly) confided in my doctor that I thought there might be an issue. After many tests confirmed we were both healthy, we were diagnosed with unexplained infertility. We were referred to a specialist who shared a painful statistic: out of 1,000 couples like us, only one would conceive naturally. I just wanted to be normal, to get pregnant, and circle a due date on the calendar. Though our plan wasn’t working out, we were still hopeful and began a series of IUIs (intrauterine inseminations).
When the first two rounds failed, frustration turned to fear. We held onto hope going into the final round, though. I will never forget those results. I remember the tears that seemed to come from my feet and my knees coming out from under me as I learned it had failed. I didn’t understand what God was doing. Why was He withholding this blessing? In the brokenness of that moment, my prayer changed. Until then, I had been asking Him to bless my plan, but now I asked, “Lord, if this is not Your will, please change my heart.”
Sitting in the doctor’s office, discussing our next steps, we had an unsettled feeling that we shouldn’t be there. He estimated our IVF success rate at around 19%, so we closed the door on further treatment. Later that year, we turned our focus toward adoption. Prayerfully, we attended an informational meeting, and throughout that meeting, God filled us with an unexplainable peace. We finally felt like we were headed in the right direction. By April 2014, we were approved to adopt.
“God, please walk with us and strengthen us in the waiting.”
As months of waiting passed, sadness set in and our home felt very empty. In that waiting, we realized we were limiting God with our timeline when we needed to trust that His timing was perfect. Our prayer became, “God, please walk with us and strengthen us in the waiting.” We clung to the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
The wait was long and full of heartache as we reviewed profiles with no match. Even during those dark moments, God reminded us that He was still working out His perfect plan. In January 2016, we heard from a birthmother who had chosen us to be the adoptive parents of her baby boy. The excitement was overwhelming, but we guarded our hearts, knowing that the adoption could still fall through.
We received a call one morning that the birth mother had gone into labor overnight. We booked two tickets on standby and were 23 and 24 in line for two open seats. We went to the airport with little hope, but as names were called for the vacant seats, no one came forward to claim them. Miraculously, we got those last two seats! Then the plane caught a tailwind and we landed 30 minutes early. We landed to a message from his birth mother: “our son was waiting to meet us”! We made it to the hospital just 20 minutes before visiting hours ended and held our son on his birthday. Only God!
We beamed at the face of the child whom we had prayed for 1,536 days. The face that God had in mind from the beginning. The face of a story far better than we could have ever imagined. We are forever grateful to the amazing woman who chose life and picked us to get to love him every day.
“I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word, I put my hope.”
Psalm 130:5
The Women’s Infertility and Loss Support Group meets regularly. Join the next meeting on Barrett Campus on Monday, April 14, at 7:00pm and learn more by going to northmetro.org/care.
“God, I want a baby sister.”
At 2½, our son declared that he wanted a sister. We told him he would need to talk to God about that and so, he began praying EVERY night for a sister. We assumed adoption would be our path again, but as we pursued it, we once again felt a familiar unsettled feeling. Concurrently, a new doctor had finally diagnosed me with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). With treatment and diet changes, my symptoms improved, and the doctor suggested we see a fertility specialist again. With painful memories still present, I declined. She countered with a coupon for a free consult and with Brian’s convincing, we met with a new specialist. We were overwhelmed with emotions as they explained that our chances of conceiving were now 99%. We had long given up on conceiving a biological child. But now, the possibility seemed real.
In October, we received the news we had been praying for: I was pregnant. On December 31, 2019, as pink fireworks lit the sky, we learned that God had answered a little boy’s prayers for a baby sister. Our family would now be complete.
Though we wouldn’t wish an infertility journey on anyone, we wouldn’t change a moment of those years of heartache. Even in the pain, God was preparing us for His beautiful plan for our family. Every time our plans failed, God gently told us to keep waiting on Him.
Whatever it is that you are waiting for, we pray that you find comfort in hearing Him say, “wait for My plan”. Our family is proof that the waiting is totally worth it. Trust us, there is no greater plan than the one the Creator has in store.
In September 2020, I joined the Infertility & Loss Support Group at NMC. We wanted to share our story and help others going through similar struggles. Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Infertility can be a lonely and painful journey, but it’s important to have a community of people who truly understand what you’re going through. The heartbeat of NMC’s Infertility & Loss group is to provide a place where women can grieve their current situations and be met with kindness and understanding while ultimately pointing couples to trust in the Lord’s plan no matter what. No one should walk this road alone, and we encourage anyone facing infertility or loss to seek support.

An Unforgettable Day: Provision, Faith, and Surprises in the Community
Every year brings surprises and unexpected events that remind us we haven’t seen it all yet and that God continues to amaze us day by day.
During the first week of March, I received a call from some friends in Guatemala City asking if CDR would be interested in receiving 200 food bags to bless the communities we serve. It didn’t take much thought to say yes! Just 48 hours later, I was in Patzutzún—the largest village we work in—unloading a truck with 200 food bags and 40 boxes of fortified rice, each containing 36 pounds of food.
In addition to the food bags, our friends from the “Alas de Misericordia” ministry in Guatemala City took the time to come to the village with us to distribute the food and hold a small evangelistic service. But that wasn’t the biggest surprise! For the 215 children at the school, the highlight of the day was seeing a helicopter land on their very own soccer field during recess. Many had never seen one up close before, and their excitement was through the roof!
We had an amazing time at the school. More than 180 mothers attended to hear the message of salvation, pray, and sing before receiving their gifts. Coincidentally, we were also visited by our founder, Lee Radford, for the first time in seven years, along with Barry, our president, and John, NMC’s executive pastor, and his wife. The setting couldn’t have been more perfect.
After our time in Patzutzún, we faced a challenge: the road to Chuitziyut, the smallest village at the end of the ravine, was still closed for repairs, making it impossible to deliver the food by vehicle. However, the families from the community decided to walk up to the top of the mountain—about 4 km (2.5 miles)—to pick up their food bags. Men, women, and children carried these gifts on their backs all the way home.
Without a doubt, this will be a day that many of us will never forget. Thank you to everyone who believes in, loves, and supports this ministry, making it possible for extraordinary things to continue happening.

As we head toward 2025, we are praying our guts out and are entirely dependent on the Lord! He has entrusted us with our vision to “Be Missed,” and our mission, “We Help People Find and Follow Jesus.” To live that out, we have set three God-sized goals to aim for as a church.
We currently support seven church plants, including Take Hold in Scotland; Grace Auburn in Auburn, Alabama; Creekside in Dallas, Georgia; Deeper Church in Dallas, Georgia, Heirloom Church in Kyle, Texas; Oaks Community Church in Naples, Florida; and Compassion International in Guatemala.
We’re telling our friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers about our great God, who loves us immeasurably more than we can imagine. We want to celebrate with you if you’ve played a part in helping someone move from death to life or if you came to faith in Christ! We invite you to share your story by visiting the Contact Us page at northmetro.org.
Before Jesus left the disciples, He said, “Go make disciples.” A tangible way to see that hope realized is through our discipleship program, NMCU. We’re looking to see 1,000 people faithfully following Jesus, equipped with knowledge of Scripture, to share their beliefs with others ultimately. NMCU creates disciples that make disciples.
Church plants are an expression of our multiplication strategy, multiplying the mission to help people find and follow Jesus.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHERE COMMUNION CAME FROM OR WHY WE DO IT?
In this series, we will explore the origins of Communion and discuss how and why we still observe it today.
We will see that Communion started with Passover in the Old Testament, culminated in Jesus’ final Passover with His disciples in the Gospels, and is encouraged by Paul and the early churches throughout the New Testament letters.

This will help give us context, purpose, and deep meaning around a practice we may take for granted. Ultimately, we will come to see how we can live lives of Communion and continue to come to the Table time and time again and invite others to the Table as well.
