VIRGIN BET RACEDAY SATURDAY 13 MARCH
www.ayr-racecourse.co.uk
WELCOME TO AYR
For those of you reading this afternoon’s racecard whether you be racehorse owners, trainers, members of Ayr Racecourse or visitors to our website or social media channels I hope you are able to enjoy the action on Racing TV. I would like to thank Virgin Bet for sponsoring today’s meeting which marks their first ever sponsorship at the track and the team at Ayr are delighted to see our traditional March Saturday rebranded Virgin Bet Raceday. In a short space of time Virgin Bet have established themselves within the betting industry and I sincerely hope this is the start of a long partnership which will benefit both parties. All seven races carry the Virgin Bet prefix and the feature race is the Virgin Bet Handicap Hurdle for the Craigie Cup at 3.42 pm which has attracted a field of eleven with Nicky Richards running no fewer than three horses. Between them today’s field have won 48 races so this is a particularly strong renewal of the race. Throughout the card there are some notable runners with the McNeil Family colours, which will be carried at Cheltenham next week by Tritonic in the Triumph Hurdle, on show today with Tamar Bridge in the Virgin Bet Novices Hurdle. Today marks exactly a year since we last welcomed spectators to Ayr Racecourse. With the gradual easing of restrictions now under way I hope it won’t be too long before we can once again welcome back owners, members and of course have a crowd cheering on our runners. I really look forward to that day.
Ayr Racecourse has held the ROA Gold Standard award for a Large Racecourse for five consecutive years.
David Brown Managing Director, Ayr Racecourse
LEADERBOARDS
RYAN CLOSES IN ON BRIAN THE race to be champion jockey at Ayr for the 2020-2021 jumps season is really hotting up with just three more fixtures to go including today’s Virgin Bet Raceday. A double at our March 1 meeting for Ryan Mania saw him move to 28 points just one point behind leader Brian Hughes with Sean Quinlan on 26 points and Derek Fox, who rode a treble, in fourth spot on 21 points. All four of these leading jockeys have mounts this afternoon and it will be interesting to see how the table stands after today. Nick Alexander (33 points) leads the Trainers’ Championship by five points from Lucinda Russell with Sandy Thomson (24) and Nicky Richards (23) also in contention. Again all of these trainers have runners today. Trevor Hemmings heads the Owners Championship by four points from Mr & Mrs Duncan Davidson.

Nicky rarely misses a jumps meeting at Ayr and has a wonderful record at the track down the years. He loves running some of his younger horses here and both his novice chasers and novice hurdlers demand respect when they run. Already this season he has had five winners here from 25 runners and he could well add to that today when he has several runners including three in our feature race the Virgin Bet Handicap Hurdle for the Craigie Cup.
Champion jockey Brian leads the way at the top of the jockeys championship again this season and is another rider who has some interesting rides this afternoon. His mount in the feature race, the Virgin Bet Handicap Hurdle for the Craigie Cup is Mayo Star for the Nicky Richards yard and Brian won this last year on Donald McCain’s The Con Man.

Nick is enjoying another successful season which so far includes six winners here at Ayr where he is currently leading trainer for the season. This afternoon Nick runs two previous course winners Fortescue Wood and Travail d’Ofevre in the Virgin Bet Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race and both of those horses look to have huge potential. Nick also runs Ebony Jewel in the feature race, the Virgin Bet Handicap Hurdle for the Craigie Cup.
Sean is on course to have his best ever season winners wise and lies just outside the top 10 in the Jump Jockeys Championship. He rides for a number of leading trainers including Nicky Richards, Jennie Candlish, Sue Smith, Gillian Boanas, Donald McCain and Phil Kirby And comes here today with a good book of rides including Teescomponents Lad in the Virgin Bet Handicap Hurdle for the Craigie Cup. Sean’s biggest ever success was in the 2019 Coral Scottish Grand National on board Takingrisks.

Borders based Sandy is enjoying a terrific season with some exciting horses producing great results for him. He has saddled four winners here in 2020-2021 from only 17 runners and will be fancied to add to that total both this afternoon and at next month’s Coral Scottish Grand National meeting where he is certain to have contenders in most of the top races. His runners today include Capard King and Caventara in the Virgin Bet Handicap Chase at 3.07pm.

Ryan is riding better than ever and is enjoying an excellent season that promises to become even better with the big Spring festivals looking. He rides mainly for his stepfather in law Sandy Thomson and the pair have formed a potent partnership and could be among the winners again this afternoon with Caventara in the Virgin Bet Handicap Chase.

Timeless Beauty was an impressive winner over course and distance on her penultimate start and wasn’t disgraced off a 1lb higher mark in a competitive Sandown contest last time. Style It Out and Emma Beag have both thrived over an extended three miles recently and also make appeal, with testing conditions bringing their stamina into play. However, a chance is taken on Irish raider GREY GIRLY, who travelled like a classy operator when second at Sedgefield in December and could be steadily coming to the boil.

He was second over track and trip to the in-form J’Ai Froid on his last visit to this venue and that rival has advertised the from well twice since. SILVER IN DISGUISE has been a revelation since going over fences, winning as he liked on his handicap debut at Catterick before defying a 15lb hike at Chepstow. He may have had something up his sleeve there so he is taken to complete the hat-trick off an 8lb higher figure, and Charlie Price seems to get the best out of him. Talktomenow was never going in the Devon National and this is a more suitable test for him. Echo Watt and Caventara are also considered.

CORRIEBEN REIVER made a mockery of his initial handicap mark when strolling clear of favourite Ebony Jewel at Kelso to make it two from two over timber. Alistair Whillans’ smart prospect has been hit with an 11lb rise for that but may well be up to the task. Ebony Jewel is 13lb better off with the selection this time but has 24 lengths to make up so it might be left to Carlisle one-two Multellie and Teescomponents Lad to give Corrieben Reiver most to think about.

ARDERA CROSS is 3-6 at Ayr and may take some stopping once more for William Young Jr. The 10-year-old was successful over C&D earlier this month and, only up 3lb for those exertions, is fancied to follow up on ground that should suit. Pistol Park hasn’t won since April 2018 but was an improved second at Carlisle last month, while Discko Des Plages was a beaten favourite at Newcastle recently but this track could suit a bit better.

NELLS SON went one better than his debut second at Doncaster in February, having just been touched off in the final stride, when scoring over C&D in December. The six-year-old has clearly been given plenty of time to mature and he appears capable of backing that victory up under a penalty. Travail D’orfevre and Fortescue Wood represent Nick Alexander having both won bumpers at the course and the pair are likely to enter calculations, while Fringill Dike is of interest coming from a decent National Hunt family.
