DAY THREE THURSDAY 18 MARCH 2021 Official programme
Min, winner of the 2020 Ryanair Chase
THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Welcome to Day Three of The Festival™ supporting WellChild, where we continue our four days of incredible racing. We were treated to a brilliant day yesterday, and we look forward to seeing what today has in store. This feature race of the day the Ryanair Chase always produces a fantastic spectacle followed by the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle. The quality action comes thick and fast on the third day of The Festival. As ever, our thanks go to our raceday sponsors who continue to support this wonderful event. Today’s sponsors include; Ryanair, Paddy Power, Marsh, Pertemps Network, Parnell Properties and JRL Group. In addition, this year, we are proud to welcome WellChild as our partner for The Festival. WellChild is the national charity for seriously ill children and headquartered in Cheltenham. More than 100,000 children and young people are living with serious illness or exceptional health needs across the UK. When the COVID-19 crisis took hold, the charity lost 60% of its projected income and had to quickly adapt its services to meet a sudden and urgent demand for help from families having to deliver round-theclock care to their children alone. With your help and support over these few days, we hope to build significant awareness and inspire donations for WellChild. If you would like to donate to the wonderful charity, you can do so by texting the “CHELT DONATE” followed by the amount you wish to donate to 70085. Thank you for your support. We are very sorry that you cannot be with us this this year for The Festival™ supporting WellChild. You will all be seriously missed, but it will make it all the more special once it is safe to welcome racegoers back to the racecourse in due course. Take care and we hope you enjoy all the magic from home with Racing TV and ITV Racing, as well as on our Raceday Live hub on the website and with our live after racing show, The Nightcap, brought to you by Glenfarclas. BETTING EXPLAINED — Select your horse. Note their name and saddlecloth number. — Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet. — ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. — ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet. — Decide the amount – or stake – you are comfortable to bet. — Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience. — Collect. Once ‘Weighed-in’ has been announced, present your betting slip and collect any winnings.
A DAY AT THE RACES EXPLAINED — Explore and familiarise yourself with the racecourse. — Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day. — Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race. This is your chance to see the horses up-close. Look for signs of their fitness and attitude. A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good. — Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.
RACEHORSES EXPLAINED — Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength. — Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. — They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes. — On average, Jump horses race - or ‘travel’ - at 30mph. — Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race.

THE PERTEMPS PRESTBURY CUP The Festival™ at Cheltenham Racecourse has seen a great rivalry between the home team of British-trained runners and those crossing the Irish Sea for many years. To celebrate this rivalry, the competition between the two countries is officially titled The Pertemps Prestbury Cup. The Prestbury Cup runs from the first race of the four-day meeting from the first race on Day One through until either country has 14 winners or more. There are a total of 28 races during The Festival™. The Pertemps Prestbury Cup, named after the nearest village to Cheltenham Racecourse, will be presented to jockeys and trainers from Ireland or Britain once the winning country is confirmed. The Cup itself has been sealed with some hallowed Cheltenham turf, so the winning country will be taking a little bit of Cheltenham with them. FACTS & STATS THE MARSH NOVICES’ STEEPLE CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION
The Marsh Novices’ Chase, first run in 2011, is a two and a half mile Grade 1 contest for novices. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to senior ranks. Grade 1 contests are the highest level of National Hunt racing so some classy horses are lining up. In terms of weight, all of the field carry 11st 4lb today.

Last year’s renewal of this race was an absolute thriller, with three great Irish horses battling it out from thre home turn to the line. Two time winner at The Festival™, Faugheen, battled it out with Melon, second in the Supreme and the Chamion Hurdle, but the Willie Mullinstrained pair had to settle for podium finishes as Samcro, himself a Ballymore winner in 2018, battled on bravely to defeat his rivals by a neck under a sensational Davy Russell ride.

ENVOI ALLEN has passed each test with flying colours and is as exciting a chase prospect as there is around. A stable switch is unlikely to have an impact and he’s rightly a short price to extend his winning sequence to 13. Shan Blue wasn’t within hailing distance of the selection in the Ballymore a year ago but he’s taken really well to chasing and is offered for the forecast.

DAY THREE Two years ago Day Three of The Festival™ supporting WellChild produced some of the most remarkable racing imaginable. For decades Cheltenham has delivered not only some truly brilliant storylines on the track, but mo ments of unrivalled emotion too Owners, trainers, jockeys and racegoers have all shed a tear or two in victory and defeat as success and failure is greeted with raw emotion on horseracing’s biggest stage. Few days of sport, however, have come close to conjuring up the drama, passion and joy of what will forever be known as ‘The Golden Hour’ on Day Three of The Festival™ in 2019. Thursday of Festival week is the only day that stages two Grade One ‘Championship’ races, with the Ryanair Chase and the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle taking place back-to-back. Two years ago those races produced winners in Frodon and Paisley Park respectively, but it was the nature of their victories and their own unique back-stories that will ensure both horses and their achievements live long in the memory. Frodon’s victory in the Ryanair Chase was particularly significant, as it saw his jockey Bryony Frost become the first British female jockey to win a Grade One race at the Cheltenham Festival. Frost’s career had already been on a sharp upward curve and with a gift for describing her emotions and her horses, the interview which followed on ITV Racing is now almost as synonymous with the day as Frodon’s performance itself. She said: “He is Pegasus, he has got wings! My god, he jumps and just at that minute when he got overtaken, most horses would quit, but he grabbed me by the hands and said, ‘Don’t you dare give up, don’t you dare not send me into the last – I want this more than you, now come on, where are you?’ “Just look at what he’s done there – deny that he just loves racing. He’s unbelievable. He just made the dream come true, it’s just incredible. He will deserve every single high five, pat and carrot.” Racing fans, regardless of whether they were at Cheltenham or not that day, had barely got their collective breath back when Paisley Park delivered a perfect performance to complete a fairytale of his own by winning the Stayers’ Hurdle.
His owner, Andrew Gemmell, is blind and has an incredible connection with the horse, a story which was well documented before the day and repeated many times later, especially after he shed tears of joy when greeting his hero in the winners’ enclosure. Many believed Paisley Park was on the cusp of creating a legacy and although he lost his crown last year, it is an achievement in itself that he is back on the track and on schedule to run in the race this year, having been found to have been suffering from an irregular heartbeat.
Paisley Park gallops clear in the 2019 Stayers' Hurdle
Emma Lavelle’s star is at the forefront of a division which is flourishing at the moment but it's a shame that he won't be be joined in this year’s race by Philip Hobbs’ Thyme Hill, with the score standing at 1-1 between the pair this season. Meanwhile connections of Lisnagar Oscar will be hoping their hero can repeat last year’s feat, although he is on everyone’s radar now after causing a monumental 50-1 upset 12 months ago. Thursday’s theme seems likely to be about returning heroes, and a seven year old who is already building quite The Festival™ legacy is Envoi Allen. Unbeaten in 11 starts under Rules and with two Festival victories to his name already – in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper in 2019 and last year’s Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle – the sky could well be the limit. He will bid for Festival win number three in the Marsh Novices’ Chase and if our Festival ambassador for 2021, Barry Geraghty, is right then it would be folly to bet against him. Geraghty, with 43 Festival wins to his name, said: “I sat on Envoi Allen back in November. He would be along the lines of sitting on Sprinter Sacre – he has a similar presence. There is no doubt, he is the real deal.” To be likened to a Festival icon by a Festival icon is no mean feat, and Cheveley Park Stud will be hoping that their rising star can steal all the headlines once again – on a day that is bursting at the seams with talent. SIRE DU BERLAIS
For the first time since Buena Vista in 2011, a horse defended the Pertemps Final title and in doing so, Sire Du Berlais became the highest-rated winner of the race in its history. Defying top-weight and a handicap mark of 152, Sire Du Berlais travelled well in his first-time blinkers and moved up to challenge approaching the last under Barry Geraghty. The pair battled on bravely to defeat stablemate The Storyteller by half a length.

HISTORY The Ryanair Steeple Chase, or the Festival Trophy Steeple Chase to give it its registered name, was introduced in 2005 when a fourth day was added to The Festival™. Some think that it is the reincarnation of the Cathcart Challenge Cup but that isn’t strictly true as that race was restricted to first and second-season chasers. Run over a distance of two miles, four and a half furlongs, the race was initially granted Grade 2 status and was sponsored by the Daily Telegraph. Thisthatandtother had proven his liking for Cheltenham by finishing runner-up in that season’s BetVictor Gold Cup, December Gold Cup and re-scheduled Victor Chandler Chase. Memories of his fall when sent off favourite for the previous season’s Arkle were soon forgotten as the Paul Nicholls-trained gelding won out in a gripping battle with Fondmort in the hands of Ruby Walsh. The following year, the unlucky Fondmort gained revenge when landing the race which was now under the sponsorship of Ryanair. The Nicky Henderson-trained 100/30 joint-favourite, needed every ounce of Mick Fitzgerald’s strength as he repelled the challenge of runner-up Lacdoudal. Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh became the first trainer and jockey to win the Ryanair twice when Taranis, the youngest winner of the race, beat the unfortunate Our Vic in a gripping dive for the line. A neck was the official verdict – the shortest winning distance in the race’s history. The David Pipe-trained Our Vic had been pulled-up in the inaugural race and finished 9th behind Fondmort before his narrow defeat in 2007 but twelve months later, the year the race achieved Grade 1 status, he gained compensation with a five length victory in the hands of Timmy Murphy. In 2009 Imperial Commander gave us all a glimpse of what was to come when staying on gamely in the hands of Paddy Brennan to beat the 2006 Arkle and 2007 Champion Chase winner Voy Por Ustedes. Twelve months later, the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Imperial Commander returned to Cheltenham to land the Gold Cup; beating Denman by seven lengths. Jonjo O’Neill’s Albertas Run proved the biggest priced winner of the Ryanair when dispelling his starting price of 14-1 to win under A. P. McCoy in 2010. He was sent off at 6-1 for the following season’s renewal but the result was the same. Under a typical McCoy drive Albertas Run became the first horse to win the race twice. In fact, he went very close to a hat-trick of victories but at the age of eleven he was unable to handle the finishing kick of his younger rival Riverside Theatre. The Nicky Henderson-trained winner was a well supported 7-2 favourite and he became the first outright winning favourite of the race, thanks in part to jockey Barry Geraghty. The 2013 renewal saw the widest margin winner of the Ryanair when Cue Card routed his rivals by nine lengths. After running well in defeat in the 2011 Supreme and 2012 Arkle, the 2010 Champion Bumper winner got back to winning ways for father and son team Colin and Joe Tizzard. Dynaste gave his trainer David Pipe a second victory in the race in 2014 with a two-and-aquarter-length success, some six years after Our Vic landed the spoils for the Pond House team. Uxizandre gave jockey AP McCoy the perfect Festival™ send off as he produced a fine front-running display to win the race four years ago. Willie Mullins landed back-to-back Ryanair Chases in 2016 and 2017 courtesy of Vautour (pictured) and Un De Sceaux. However, the master of Closutton was denied a hat-trick twelve months ago as Henry De Bromhead’s Balko des Flos beat Un de Sceaux by four and a half lengths, but it wasn’t long for Mullins to wait to regain the crown as Min put in an exhibition of jumping to win the 2020 renewal of the race - Mullins’ third Ryanair win in the last five years. The 2019 renewal saw a brave performance from Paul Nicholls’ Frodon, who battled back bravely up the hill under Bryony Frost to defeat Aso, third in 2018, by just over a length to begin what came to be known as ‘The Golden Hour’. The pair returned to jubilant scenes in the winners’ enclosure with a first Grade 1 triumph for the horse a very popular one.

FACTS & STATS THE RYANAIR STEEPLE CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION
The Grade 1 Ryanair Steeple Chase is a race for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated in excess of 130 and is run over the intermediate trip of two miles, four and a half furlongs. It therefore suits horses that perhaps find the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase on the sharp side and those that find the Magners Cheltenham Gold Cup trip a step too far at this stage in their careers. Always a competitive race at The Festival™ – this year’s line-up looks a particularly strong one.

MIN
Previously a perrennial bridesmaid at The Festival™, with second places in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and the Champion Chase to his name, Min finally secured a well-deserved Festival victory as he kept the late challenges of Saint Calvados and A Plus Tard at bay in the final strides. Always prominently positioned by Paul Townend, Min jumped beautifully and travelled strongly, grasping the lead after the seventh fence and never relinquishing it from then on.

A very open-looking Grade 1 by this week’s standards. ALLAHO responded really well to forcing tactics back over this trip when a dominant winner of a Grade 2 at Thurles and is just about the pick. HISTORY The Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle is the most prestigious long-distance hurdle race in the calendar. It was introduced to The Festival™ in 1972 when it replaced the Spa Hurdle and was initially known as the Lloyds Bank Stayers’ Hurdle. Originally held on Tuesday or Wednesday until it was switched to the Thursday in 1993, the inaugural race was won by Parlour Moor, trained by Harry Thomson Jones and ridden by Macer Gifford. Tommy Carberry steered Brown Lad to victory in 1975 for trainer Jim Dreaper before becoming the first jockey to win the race twice when partnering the Peter Easterby-trained Town Ship to victory in 1977. In 1982 Crimson Embers gave Fulke Walwyn his first of three Stayers’ Hurdle successes when partnered by Stuart Shilston and the trio combined again four years later when Crimson Embers became the first horse to regain the title and at eleven, the oldest winner of the race. Galmoy became the first horse to win back-to-back renewals in 1987 and 1988 for trainer John Mulhern and jockey Tommy Carmody. The Barry Hills-trained Nomadic Way was equally at home racing on the level or over hurdles and in 1992 won the Stayers’ Hurdle with those famous Sangster colours carried by Jamie Osborne. Martin Pipe recorded the first of two Stayers’ Hurdle successes in 1994 when Balasani held off all challengers under Mark Perrett and two years later Cyborgo followed suit when ridden by David Bridgwater. Multiple winners were aplenty in the 2000s. The French raider Baracouda set the trend when winning in the famous silks of J. P. McManus in 2002 and 2003 for Francois and Thierry Doumen. 2005 proved a landmark year for more than one reason. The title of the race was changed to the World Hurdle when Ladbrokes took over the sponsorship and it also saw the emergence of one of the best-known names associated with the race. The Howard Johnson-trained Inglis Drever dominated the race during the mid-part of the decade winning three times in 2005, 2007 and 2008. Graham Lee did the steering for his first success whilst Paddy Brennan took over for his second success and Denis O’Regan for the third, meaning that Inglis Drever is the only multiple winner in the race’s history to be ridden by three different jockeys. Prior to 2009 Paul Nicholls had been out of luck in the Stayers’ Hurdle and Big Buck’s (pictured) hadn’t looked anything out of the ordinary in his native France, winning twice from 13 starts, but in the hands of Nicholls he blossomed into the best hurdler of his generation and arguably the best we have ever seen. The 2009 Festival™ provided the springboard to a career that saw him win back-to-back Stayers’ Hurdles from 2009 to 2012 under the tutorage of Ruby Walsh. In fact, from January 2009 to December 2012 the stylish hurdler went a total of 18 races unbeaten. In four short years, Big Buck’s, Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh became the most successful horse, trainer and jockey in the race’s history. Injury prevented the superstar defending his title in 2013 when the Charles Byrnes-trained Solwhit took full advantage under Paul Carberry – 36 years after his father had won with Town Ship. With Sun Bets taking over the sponsorship in 2017 and changing the race title back to the Stayers’ Hurdle, the final World Hurdle saw Colin Tizzard’s brilliant hurdler Thistlecrack land the spoils, stretching clear up the famous Cheltenham hill to win by seven lengths at the line. The inaugural Sun Bets Stayers’ Hurdle saw trainer Willie Mullins gain a first success in the 3m prize with Nichols Canyon and Mullins was back in the Winner’s Enclosure twelve months later with Penhill. Paisley Park’s dominance of the stayers’ hurdling arena began in 2019 and he duly landed the Grade 1 prize here at The Festival™. Emma Lavelle and Aidan Coleman are back this year with a reclamation of that crown very much in mind in the second Stayers’ Hurdle sponsored by Paddy Power, after the first was taken by 50/1 shot, Lisnagar Oscar for Rebecca Curtis and Adam Wedge.
FACTS & STATS THE PADDY POWER STAYERS’ HURDLE RACE RACE DESCRIPTION The ultimate stamina test for hurdlers, the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle Race is run over three miles. Recent famous winners on the illustrious Roll of Honour include Baracouda, Inglis Drever, multiple winner Big Buck’s and more recently Thistlecrack, Nichols Canyon, Penhill and Paisley Park. LISNAGAR OSCAR The biggest-priced winner of the race since Anzum’s 40/1 triumph in 1999, Lisnagar Oscar defied a starting price of 50/1 to land the spoils in excellent style for Rebecca Curtis and Adam Wedge. Held up in midfield for much fo the race behind a strong pace, Lisnagar Oscar moved easily to the front turning for home before swatting away the challenge of Ronald Pump in the final furlong, staying on strongly to record a famous success.

PAISLEY PARK has looked as good, if not better than ever this term, doing well to get up close home to land the Long Walk at Ascot on his latest outing, so he’s an obvious choice to regain his crown. Sire du Berlais tends to save his best for the Festival, so a bold showing is expected from him, while 2020 winner Lisnagar Oscar shouldn’t be ruled out.

FACTS & STATS THE PADDY POWER PLATE HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE RACE DESCRIPTION
The Paddy Power Plate is a Grade 3 Handicap Steeple chase run over two miles, four and a half furlongs. Handicaps exist as an attempt to level the playing field for horses of varying quality, thereby ensuring more competitive racing for connections and punters alike. All horses possess an official BHA rating that reflects their relative abilities. Put simply, the higher the rating, the bigger the weight carried - see how 153 rated Caribean Boy carries 3lb more than the 150-rated Mister Whitaker.

SIMPLY THE BETTS Well supported and with strong course form in the book on his last start, Simply The Betts justified his position as market leader in good style under Gavin Sheehan, giving trainer Harry Whittington his very first winner at The Festival™. Close to the leaders throughout, Simply The Betts moved to the front two from home but was headed by Happy DIva after the last, however, he battled back bravely to win by just over a length at the line.

FACTS & STATS THE PARNELL PROPERTIES MARES’ NOVICES’ HURDLE RACE RACE DESCRIPTION Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. This race has also been allocated Grade 2 status which makes it a high-class contest and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch contenders lining up. Initially all runners are allocated 11st 2lb before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here - see how Gauloise carries 5lb extra for her Listed succes at Thurles in December.

WINNER
RUN OVER TWO MILES, 179 YARDS
CONCERTISTA It was an incredible fifth winner of this race in a row for great Irish trainer Willie Mullins as the smart mare, Concertista, went one better than her narrow defeat in the 2019 running. Travelling comfortably in midfield under Daryl Jacob, she made her extra experience tell as she cruised to the lead approaching the last and sped up the hill in style, putting twelve lengths in between herself and stablemate Dolcita in what was an extremely impressive showing.

DAWN RUN This race is registered as the Dawn Run, in honour of the legendary mare, who is arguably the most succesful mare in the history of the sport. Paddy Mullins’ mare became only the second mare to win the Champion Hurdle at The Festival™ in 1984 and remains the only horse to have ever won the English, Irish and French Champion Hurdles in the same season. Two years later, she won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in what remains one of the most famous finishes in the race’s history. She remains the only horse to complete the Champion Hurdle - Gold Cup double and will long be remembered as one of the greats of National Hunt Racing.

ROSEYS HOLLOW’s Solerina win is backed up by a really good timefigure, and she’s taken to confirm superiority over Royal Kahala and end Willie Mullins’ domination of this race. FACTS & STATS THE FULKE WALWYN KIM MUIR CHALLENGE CUP HANDICAP STEEPLE CHASE (SPONSORED BY THE JRL GROUP) RACE DESCRIPTION The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Steeple Chase (Sponsored by the JRL Group) is another handicap, this time for horses which possess an official rating from 0 to 145 and will be run over three miles and two furlongs. Like the rest of the handicaps on today’s card, the higher a horse’s official BHA rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry - see how the 145-rated Double Shuffle, carries 3lb more than Beau Bay, who is rated 142. LAST YEAR’S
HANDICAP CHASE
WINNER MILAN NATIVE
RUN OVER THREE MILES, TWO FURLONGS
In a strong-staying performance, Milan Native made his way to the front two out and kept on powerfully up the hill to keep Kilfilum Cross, second for the second year running, and Bob Mahler at bay in the final furlong. Despite jumping slightly right at the last and then drifting left up the run-in, the seven-year-old took advantage of his rider’s 7lb claim and, getting weight from his rivals as a result, held on well in the final 100 yards to win by almost two lengths.
