THE JOCKEY CLUB

Few events in the racing calendar capture the imagination quite like today’s feature race, the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase. Over the years some of the sport’s biggest names have claimed victory in the race and we can’t wait to see who will be the next to add their name to the prestigious roster. Among them will be Energumene, last year’s winner with Edwardstone and Editeur du Gite leading the British challenge

Festival Wednesday also offers something unique in the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase Delta Work, the horse who dashed Tiger Roll’s chances of a final Cheltenham Festival victory last year, lines up once again and is favourite to take home the prize

As always, our thanks go to our race day sponsors who continue to support this wonderful event. Today, they include Ballymore, Brown Advisory, Coral, Betway, Glenfarclas and Weatherbys. We wish them all a wonderful day with us

We are honoured to once again be working with WellChild, our official charity partners for 2023. WellChild do amazing work across the country with seriously ill children, and their headquarters are based right here in Cheltenham.

Once again, our punters panel will be live from the parade ring before racing, providing you with their tips for this afternoon’s action. In the same location just before 1pm, the electric string quartet Escala will be performing a set, providing the perfect warm-up for a brilliant day of racing. After the last, Tommy and the Fuse will be ready and waiting to entertain you all in

The Centaur, so make sure you head over to keep the party going!

Undoubtedly one of the most special moments of the Cheltenham Festival is when the tape goes up on the first race of the day and the Cheltenham Roar is unleashed This year, we’ve teamed up with DJ Cuddles to produce a remix of the iconic sound To see the track played to a live audience for the first time, head over to the Best Mate Pavilion this afternoon where none other than DJ Cuddles himself will be performing a live set from 3.30pm – 5pm.

We’re delighted to announce that after a successful launch at the November Meeting, the ‘Love Our Turf’ campaign has returned for the four days of the Cheltenham Festival. The initiative seeks to reinforce and strengthen the relationship between the Home of Jump Racing and our local community. This will be most notable across all main routes back to the town, where you will find wayfinding ushers, street entertainment, enhanced cleaning and an increased number of toilets along the way

We’d like to sign-off by thanking each and every one of you for joining us for what is the highlight of our calendar. The impact the event and your attendance has on the local community is staggering, with a new report carried out by The University of Gloucestershire revealing that in 2022, The Festival brought an estimated £274million to the local economy.

For now, we wish you a memorable day with us and hope to see you all again very soon.

THE JOCKEY CLUB RACECOURSES

SOUTH WEST REGION FREQUENT RUNNER SCHEME

The Jockey Club South West Frequent Runner Scheme is aimed at rewarding trainers who run horses regularly at Jockey Club Racecourses in the South West Region - Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick and Wincanton.

There are two categories of a frequent runner. Trainers with 40 or more horses and Trainers with 40 or fewer horses in training.

Warwick’s two-day meeting on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 September kicks off the 2021/22 scheme, which will conclude on 31 May 2022.

All qualifying races are allocated a star rating (* to *****) with trainers awarded full points (star rating) for their first runner and half points for additional runners in the same race. These are based on the average numbers of runners a race has attracted over the previous two or three years as follows:

1 star - 18 plus runners 2 stars - 15-17 3 stars - 12-14 4 stars – 8-11 5 stars – less than 8

The star ratings for each qualifying race are marked with the race conditions.

THE BALLYMORE NOVICES’ HURDLE (REGISTEREDASTHEBARINGBINGHAM)

RACE DESCRIPTION

The Grade 1 Ballymore

IMPAIRE ET PASSE is admittedly more style over substance at this stage, but he couldn’t have been much more impressive in winning both his hurdle starts to date and, with the longer trip highly unlikely to hold any fears, he’s very much fancied to make his class tell. Hermes Allen produced a scintillating performance in the Challow and has to be considered a big threat, along with last years’s Fred Winter runner-up Gaelic Warrior, who has progressed plenty more this season.

RACE DESCRIPTION

The Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Steeple Chase is run over three miles and half a furlong and features this season’s leading novice staying chasers. Many horses in the past have used this race as a stepping-stone to future Gold Cup glory - including recent winners Denman, Bobs Worth and Lord Windermere. As is usual in a Grade 1 chase, all horses carry the same weight, in this case 11st 7lb. The only exception being Galia des Liteaux, who carries 11st being a mare.

The three miles and half a furlong race was introduced to The Festival in 1946 under the title of the Broadway Novices’ Chase and that inaugural running was won by Birthlaw who was trained by Tommy Rayson and ridden by Ted Vinall. At 11-years-old he remains the oldest winner of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase. In 1957, Fulke Walwyn became the race’s leading trainer when Mandarin, ridden by Michael Scudamore, gave him his fourth success in the race - adding to the victories of Mountain Prince (1948), On View (1951) and Glenbeigh (1954).

Some legendary names of the National Hunt scene have won the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase but perhaps the biggest of them all was Tom Dreaper’s Arkle who won the 1963 renewal before landing a hat-trick of Gold Cups in 1964, 1965 and 1966. Arkle’s rider Pat Taaffe was winning the race for the fourth time following victories on Coneyburrow (1953), Solfen (1960) and Grallagh Cnoc (1961) and when he partnered Proud Tarquin to victory in 1970 he became the leading rider in the race’s history

The Dan Moore-trained Tied Cottage proved a convincing winner under jockey Tommy Carberry in 1976 and four years later went on to land the Gold Cup before being subsequently disqualified having testing positive for a banned substance 1977 was the Dickinson’s year when Gay Spartan won the race for trainer Tony and jockey Michael.

Several winners have subsequently achieved victory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup but Jenny Pitman’s Garrison Savannah did it in subsequent years winning the race in 1990 and the Gold Cup in 1991 when he beat two former champions in Desert Orchid and Norton’s Coin. He almost went into the record books the following month when he went so close to winning the Grand National only giving best to Seagram.

In 1992, Miinnehoma was a winning favourite of the race and two years later the Martin Pipe-trained

runner went on to win the 1994 Grand National, confirming that the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase really does unearth some future superstars. 1999 saw victory for the Noel Chance-trained Looks Like Trouble who later went on to win the 2000 Gold Cup. Paul Nicholls’ Denman was an emphatic ten length winner of the 2007 Brown Advisory Chase before following up in breathtaking style in the following season’s Gold Cup, a feat repeated by Nicky Henderson’s 2012 winner Bobs Worth, as well as the Jim Culloty-trained Lord Windermere twelve months later Nicholls was back in the winners’ enclosure in 2019 when Topofthegame took a thrilling renewal of the race from Henderson’s Santini.

Willie Mullins won the first of four Brown Advisory Novices’ Chases when Florida Pearl galloped to success under Richard Dunwoody in 1998 before Rule Supreme and Cooldine followed suit in 2004 and 2009. Don Poli’s victory in 2015 saw Mullins join Fulke Walwyn as the race’s leading trainer. The Peter Beaumont-trained Hussard Collonges became the joint longest priced winner of the race when landing odds of 33-1 in 2002 – the same price as the 1983 winner Canny Danny. Another record was toppled in 2006 when the Paul Nicholls-trained Star De Mohaison became the first, and only, five-year-old winner

Nigel Twiston-Davies ended a 23 year wait for a second winner of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase when Blaklion triumphed under Ryan Hatch in 2016. Twiston-Davies’ maiden success had come with the six-year-old Young Hustler, who won in the hands of Peter Scudamore in 1993. However, the 2020 winner was from familiar sourcesChamp flew home late on for Nicky Henderson and owner JP McManus in one of the finishes of The Festival. Monkfish took the race back to Ireland with a fine performance in 2021 before L’Homme Presse wrestled it back under Charlie Deutsch for Venetia Williams.

Very much the type to be suited by the return to further, he can make a bold bid to keep his 100% record intact. Pioneering research into how horses see the world is helping reduce risk in racing

The colour used on hurdles and fences at all racecourses across Britain has changed from orange to white.

•Horses see in a reduced number of colours and don't see orange and red as humans do.

•Research by Exeter University showed that the clarity of obstacles in racing for horses could be improved by the use of white, and British racing made the change

•Effects on any changes in faller rates are now being monitored.

•Changing the colour on fences is one part of a bigger body of work by the Horse Welfare Board and British Racing to continuously reduce risk in the sport

THE CORAL CUP HANDICAP HURDLE (PREMIER HANDICAP)

RACE DESCRIPTION

The Coral Cup Premier

Handicap Hurdle is the first handicap of the afternoon and is a fiercely competitive event – both on the track and in the betting ring! Handicaps exist as an attempt to level the playing field for horses of varying quality, thereby ensuring more competitive racing. All horses possess an official BHA rating that reflects their relative abilities. The higher the rating, the more weight the horse has to carry - see how Fil Dor & Sporting John rated 151, carry 4lb more than the 147-rated Scaramanga.

KEY TRENDS

11 of the past 15 winners were aged 7 or younger

10 of the past 21 winners were French-bred

18 of the past 22 winners had run 9 times or less over hurdles

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

COMMANDER OF FLEET

As the rain began really getting into the ground, up stepped Commander Of Fleet to give Gordon Elliott his first winner of the meeting He came as a bit of a shock to almost everyone but had won a Grade One as a novice and had finished second in the 2019 Albert Bartlett. He was always up with the pace and was one of the few who’s silks still resembled their original colours He and Fastorslow fought out an excellent finish with Commander Of Fleet just prevailing.

Any number to consider but RUN FOR OSCAR is just about the most persuasive option having improved into a very useful stayer on the Flat during the second half of 2022. He was also better than the result on both hurdles outings since and, representing a yard with very few peers in handicaps, he looks the way to go with cheekpieces back on. Captain Conby has presumably been saved for this and he’s open to lots of progress, with Good Risk At All perhaps the pick of the British contenders

THE BETWAY QUEEN MOTHER CHAMPION CHASE FA CT S AN D ST AT IS TI CS

The feature race of the day is the Grade 1 Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase, the championship event for two mile chasers Some of the leading chasers from Britain and Ireland will be tackling Cheltenham’s unique undulations at breathtaking speed and there will be no hiding places as the cream usually rises to the top. All todays runners carry 11st 10lb in the absence of any mares.

RACE DESCRIPTION

28 of the past 36 winners were aged 7-9

KEY TRENDS

13 of the past 20 winners were secondseason chasers

Nicky Henderson has won 5 of the past 11 renewals

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

ENERGUMENE

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see a proper rematch between Energumene and Shishkin as Nicky Henderson eight-year-old was pulled up after eight fences He was never travelling and was found to have a rare bone disease in the months that followed. Energuemene clearly enjoyed the change in tactics and may well have beaten Shishkin had he completed the race In the end he won with his head in his chest and we look forward to seeing if he can retain his title.

Whilst Friday’s Gold Cup is all about stamina, this afternoon’s Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase focuses on speed, with Europe’s top two-mile chasers hoping to add their name to an illustrious Roll of Honour.

The Dan Moore-trained Quita Que won the inaugural National Hunt Two-Mile Champion Chase in 1959 under Bunny Cox before Tom Dreaper, the leading trainer in the race, and Pat Taaffe teamed up with Fortria to become the first multiple winner of the race in 1960 and 1961. Ever since then there have been many multiple winners of this two mile chase; Drinny’s Double achieving the same feat for trainer Bob Turnell and jockey Frank Nash in 1967 and 1968.

Fred Winter trained his one and only Champion Chase winner in 1971 when Paul Kelleway partnered Crisp to victory, who two years later suffered an agonising defeat by Red Rum in the 1973 Grand National.

The Edward Courage-trained Royal Relief became the first horse in the race’s history to regain his title after winning under Bill Smith in 1972 and 1974. Skymas recorded back-to-back wins for trainer Brian Lusk and jockey Mouse Morris in 1976 and 1977 and became the oldest winner, at twelve, on the second of those occasions The Peter McCreery-trained Hilly Way picked up the baton immediately afterwards winning under Tommy Carmody in 1978 and Ted Walsh in 1979.

The Queen Mother, whose Game Spirit finished runner-up in the race in 1976, had been an unwavering supporter of National Hunt racing and in 1980 the race was renamed the Queen Mother Champion Chase in celebration of her 80th birthday. Up until her death she was always on hand to give out the trophy each season.

The Robert Earnshaw-ridden Badsworth Boy dominated the race in the early 1980s, winning for three years in succession between 1983 and 1985 for the Dickinson family and he remains the most successful horse in the history of the race. At the end of the 1980s there were two more back-to-back winners of the race. Pearlyman tasted glory for John Edwards in 1987 and 1988

and the David Elsworth-trained Barnbrook Again followed suit in 1989 and 1990.

David Nicholson broke his duck in 1994 when Viking Flagship galloped to victory under Adrian Maguire and he didn’t have to wait long for his second when the same horse followed up 12 months later in the hands of Charlie Swan

The Jessica Harrington-trained Moscow Flyer stamped his authority on the race in 2003 before disappointing punters 12 months later when unseating Barry Geraghty. He returned in 2005 and duly made amends, becoming the joint-second oldest winner of the race

In more recent seasons Barry Geraghty has been a leading force. In 2010, he partnered the Colm Murphy-trained Big Zeb to something of a surprise success before teaming up with Nicky Henderson in 2012 and 2013 with Finian’s Rainbow and Sprinter Sacre respectively. That took his tally to five making him joint-leading jockey with Pat Taaffe

And who can forget the 2016 renewal when Sprinter Sacre completed the greatest of comebacks by becoming only the third horse to regain his Champion Chase crown. The ten-year-old had endured a difficult time since winning the race for the first time in 2013 but produced a brilliant display under Nico De Boinville to send the crowd into raptures.

Altior gave Nico and trainer Nicky Henderson two winners of the race between 2017 and 2020, but his absence saw Politologue take the crown back to Ditcheat in 2020, giving Paul Nicholls a sixth Champion Chase win and owner, John Hales, a third after One Man and Azertyuiop had won the race for him in 1998 and 2004 respectively. Henry de Bromhead’s Put The Kettle On made it seven from the last 11 Arkle winners to go on and win the Champion Chase in 2021 Energumene gave master trainer Willie Mullins his first winner in the race and returns this year to defend his crown.

Potentially the race of the week featuring the 1-2-3 from the rearranged Clarence House Chase here in January, EDWARDSTONE getting the verdict to emerge on top this time and master reigning champion Energumene, who posted his first ever below-par effort when 6 1/2 lengths back in third. Editeur du Gite was ridden to perfection that day and Gary Moore’s bold-jumping front runner may have to settle for bronze on this occasion, in what promises to be a tactically-intriguing affair

PLAY SMARTER

DELTA WORK was impressive in this last season and looks well prepared to make it back-to-back successes. His stablemate Galvin is the other class act in this field and looks a huge threat if he takes to the new discipline, while Franco de Port represents another top Irish yard and has enough ability to make his presence felt. The others all have improvement to find.

RACE DESCRIPTION

The Johnny Henderson

Grand Annual Challenge Cup is a Premier Handicap Steeple Chase, named in honour of the late Johnny Henderson, the father of Nicky Henderson and the man who helped safeguard the future of Cheltenham racecourse in the 1960s, is the oldest race that takes place at The Festival. This handicap chase is run over two miles on the Old Course for the second time this year, has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards and is often one of the most fastest-paced, thrilling races of the whole week.

JP McManus has won 4 of the past 18

KEY TRENDS

11 of the past 17 winners were aged between 6-8

9 of the past 13 winners failed to win earlier in the season

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

GLOBAL CITIZEN

Ben Pauling’s Global Citizen kept on strongly to deny the JP McManus hot pot Andy Dufresne A wind operation had clearly done the trick on Global Citizen and he came into the race off the back of a nice prep run behind Goshen Kielan Woods kept him in and around the front trio from the off and it paid to be prominent throughout the day. Once Editeur Du Gite gave best, he was left alone up the run in and despite idling, he was a comfortable winner

PREMIER HANDICAP

Run over one mile, seven furlongs & 199 yards. 13 fences to be jumped Total prize fund of £125,000 £70,337 to the winner

Plenty of exposed sorts in this year’s renewal so ANDY DUFRESNE, who was a strong favourite when runner-up off the same mark 12 months ago, is taken to defy top weight and go one place better having been laid out for this again. WHO WAS JOHNNY HENDERSON? O WAS

The Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase is the oldest race at The Festival and the oldest Steeplechase in the racing calendar. In 1963 Johnny Henderson was aware there was a danger that property developers would buy Cheltenham Racecourse so together with other Jockey Club members he formed Racecourse Holdings Trust (now Jockey Club Racecourses) to purchase the racecourse for £240,000 and safeguard its future. Jockey Club Racecourses now owns and operates 14 British racecourses and Johnny Henderson served as Patron to Cheltenham until his death in 2003. His son, Nicky, has been crowned Champion Trainer on five occasions.

THE WEATHERBYS CHAMPION BUMPER

RACE DESCRIPTION

The Grade 1 Weatherbys

Champion Bumper is the classiest race of its nature run anywhere in the world, and many past winners have developed into top-class hurdlers and chasers. A bumper, officially known as a National Hunt Flat Race, takes place without any hurdles or fences and is aimed at young horses that are likely to develop into jumpers. Only debutantes or horses that have run in this type of race, or an Irish or French equivalent, are qualified to run If they have run in flat races or have turned out in hurdle races or chases, they are barred from entry.

KEY TRENDS

Willie Mullins has trained 12 winners

23 of the 30 winners were trained in Ireland

The past 19 winners won last time out

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

FACILE VEGA

Both Facile Vega and American Mike had looked special coming into the race but it was the Willie Mullins trained Facile Vega who stormed up the hill in front. Out of the legend Quevega, there was a lot of hype after he had decimated his rivals at the Dublin Racing Festival Paul Townend kept things very simple and opted to take the shortest route rounding the home turn The race was over in a matter of strides once Townend got to work; an excellent winner to round off the Wednesday.

GRADE 1

Run over two miles, eighty-seven yards.

Total prize fund of £80,000 £45,560 to the winner

WINNING CONNECTIONS

Trainers and Jockeys with some of the strongest records in the race over the last 10 years.

Willie Mullins fields 10 as he bids for a remarkable thirteenth win and the mare FUN FUN FUN could be the way to go She was a sensational winner of a Grade 2 mares’ event at Leopardstown last month and can follow in the footsteps of Relegate who did the same double for the yard in 2018. A Dream To Share has passed every test so far for John Kiely and sets a very good standard. Encanto Bruno and Better Days Ahead are other interesting runners away from the Mullins’ battalion.

Racehorse & Jockey Welfare

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing.

All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation.

Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse.

In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.

If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident &
